The present study is intended as a preliminary statistical survey of the world's production of petroleum substitutes. The information presented is admittedly deficient. The world's production in 1939 of petroleum substitutes—of which approxi-mately 97 per cent are direct substitutes for motor fuels—is tentatively estimated at 108,ooo,ooo bbl., or equivalent to the combined output of crude oil in 1939 of Rumania, Mexico and Colombia. With few exceptions, these figures of production represent also actual figures of consumption. The United States, owing mainly to its output of natural gasoline, leads all countries in the production of these products, with about 53 per cent of the total. In European countries, particularly Germany, the imminence of war in 1939 forced an increase in production and im- provement of methods of manufacturing motor fuels, largely from coal, with the result that this country produced in that year over 20,000,000 bbl. of substitutes. The township of Cloncurry is situated in the northwestern part of Queensland, about latitude S. 20" 42' 53" and longitude E. 140" 30' 25". Townsville is the port through which all the trade passes and is about 470 miles east-northeast of Cloncurry township. The Cloncurry copper district covers an area about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide. Unfortunately the mines are very scattered over this area, there being no large groups of mines. Mount Elliott mine is situated about 70 miles south from the township of Cloncurry, and Mount Oxide mine about 150 miles north of Cloncurry. The district has been known for the last 35 years, and in the early stages a large amount of capital was expended with little to show for it; but within the last four years the railway has been extended from Townsville to Mount Elliott and about 40 miles north of Cloncurry, which has made possible the treatment of the ores of the mines on this extension. The Mount Elliott company within the last few years has smelted and converted on its mine 169,688 tons of ore for 20,554 tons of blister copper, containing 20,377 tons of copper, 35,642 oz. of gold and 28,841 oz. of silver, at a cost of about 233 per ton of blister copper, f.o.b. Townsville. This cost included all development, wages, salaries, general management, office, agency, legal expenses, freight, etc. The gold and silver contents would practically pay for freight to Europe, refining, realization charges, etc. The costs of supplies are as follows: Firewood, 15s., coke, 75s., mine timber, 54s., and coal, 60s. per long ton; explosives: dynamite and gelignite, 50s., and blasting gelatine, 65s. 6d. per case, Mount Elliott Mine The pay shoot of the orebody outcrops at the surface for about 200 ft., and lies between two slate walls about 40 ft. apart., having a general

INTRODUCTION Slurry systems and mechanical conveying, represent the main methods of transporting solids from one area of a mineral processing plant to another. A well-designed slurry handling system can assist in lowering plant capital costs by reducing building size, simplifying plant layout and reducing operating costs by lowering maintenance and labour costs. This Paper has been prepared with the object of providing a practical approach to designing slurry systems. SLURRY CHARACTERISTICS Slurry is a mixture of crushed or ground rock mixed with water or a chemical solution, and can flow under several different conditions: (a) As a homogeneous suspension; (b) As a heterogeneous suspension; (c) With a moving bed (saltation); (d) With a stationary bed. Homogeneous flow takes place when the solids are uniformly distributed throughout a pipe and when particle sizes are smaller than 325 mesh. Heterogeneous is the most common slurry suspension. In this system, there is a gradual increase in concentration of solid particles towards the bottom of a pipe. There is a fairly wide range of velocities that fall within this system. In moving bed systems, the coarse particles settle out and bounce along the bottom of a pipe. Operating under these conditions tends to minimize wear and power requirements, but because this system operates within narrow velocity limits, pipelines frequently plug. Stationary bed conditions exist when coarse material has settled in the bottom of the pipe restricting the available area. These conditions should be avoided. DESIGNING A SLURRY SYSTEM Slurry can be transported either by pumping through a pipeline or by developing a gravity head and flowing through a pipe or along a launder. When considering any slurry system, whether for the design of a new plant or to make modifications to an existing operating plant, design criteria are required. The design criteria provide the information for calculating the material balance and sizing the equipment. The quantities on the material balance can then be assigned to the flowsheet for reference. FOUR general methods have been used in the study of the decomposition of coal. The first has been directed toward the processes of coal formation, the second has been by means of microscopic studies, the third from the data of destructive distillation, and the fourth has made use of various solvents. Applying these methods to the sulfur of coal, it has been found that the organic sulfur of plant and animal life enters into the formation of coal and remains in organic combination in the final product. The inorganic sulfur is almost entirely combined as iron pyrites and marcasite. The infiltration of hydrogen-sulfide waters is doubtless a large factor in these combinations. Sulfates are found in very small quantities except where free oxygen has entered the coal strata. The mechanical mixing of detritus with the early coal material is another source of sulfur. In this case the sulfur is distributed in microscopic particles throughout the mass. In destructive distillation, a part of the sulfur comes off as hydrogen sulfide and various thiophen compounds, but this furnishes little information as to the nature of the sulfur compounds in the coal itself. The use of solvents has given valuable data concerning the sulfur compounds in coal. Fremyl and later E. Guignet2 noted the action of alkaline solutions on coal after treatment with nitric acid and Anderson and Roberts3 showed the presence of large quantities of organic sulfur in the extract so obtained. In a study of the phenol extract of coal, Parr and Hadley4 found organic sulfur in the soluble organic material. These investigations proved the presence of organic sulfur in coal in addition to the inorganic forms, such as iron pyrites and sulfates. T. M. Monazite placers in a region of the Carolinas ex- in 1951-1954 by the USGS are estimated to contain at least 53,000 short tons of thorium and 4600 short tons of uranium. None of these deposits is being mined. The 5200-sq mile area investigated extends northeast along the western Piedmont from the Savannah River in South Carolina to the Catawba River in North Carolina. Much of the region is 700 to 1100 ft above sea level. Gentle hills and broad interfluves give a local relief of 100 to 200 ft. This increases to 1700 ft at the west margin of the area where the east flank of the Blue Ridge is approached in South Carolina and the South Mts. are entered in North Carolina. This report is restricted to placers in the Piedmont. Monazite deposits in the Blue Ridge and coastal plain were not covered by the investigation. Monazite Mining in the Carolina Piedmont: Discovered in 1879 by W. E. Hidden,' the monazite placers in the Carolina Piedmont were first mined in 1886. The area was a major world source for thorium and the lanthanides until 1895, when Brazilian monazite entered the trade. Total output from the Carolina Piedmont has been nearly 5500 tons of monazite,2 but the placers have been idle since 1911, except for 48 tons produced between 1915 and 1917. Monazite mining was revived in the Carolinas in 1954 when a dredge operated by the Heavy Minerals CO. opened a fluviatile placer along Horse Creek in the coastal plain near Aiken, S. C. Geology and Mineralogy: Two recent papers",' have described the geology of the monazite placer district in the Piedmont between the Savannah and Catawba rivers; the general geology of the region has been reviewed by P. B. King.' These reports show that the placers are in locally derived alluvial sediments that cover the floors of shallow, narrow valleys in an area underlain by monazite-

For certain classes of electric railways a steel conductor is preferable to the oldcr atld more commonly used overhead trolley-wire. The third-rail presents a rather better appearance, because of the absence of an overhead structure; it is easily installed, cheaply maintai~ied, presents s large area for conducting and collecting the current, and is therefore particularly suitable for high speed and heavy service. With costs calculated on the basis of equal coilductirity in rail aud trollej-wire, the third-rail constrrictiol~ is cl~caper than thc overhead trolley. But the average interurban road will lise a trolley-wire of considerably less conductivity than would be obtained with the smallest size steel rail (about 60 lb. per pard) that mould ordinarily be used, and here the first clost of trolley construction would generally be less thau that of the third-rail. While no third-rail installation has jet bee11 in operation long enough to give figurcs of value, it ~vould appear that the cost of maintenance of the thirdrail construction should be less than that of the overhead trolley. This consideration, together with that of sightliness and adaptability (particularly in the case of terminals, yards and very heavy or high-speed service), will frequently off'set the higher cost of the third-rail construction and make it the preferable means of' conducting the current from thc generator to the car-motor. For the first third-rail installations, old track rails were used when obtainable, and these old rails were supple~rlented with new rails of standard T-section and composition. With the coming of the very heavy, high-speed service during the past few years, the resistance of these old and new standard T-rails was found to be so high that they mould not carry the high currents necessary without too great a drop in the line-potential. The oil industry is at the parting of the ways in relating fundamental engineering concepts to legal interpretations and field practices. The old concept, based on an erroneous analogy to wild game, that oil and gas are migratory substances and belong to him who reduces them to possession regardless of their point of origin in the reservoir, has come to be quite generally recognized as the basis of many of the serious ills and extravagances of the industry. The chain of consequences resulting from this erroneous conception has been traced elsewhere and need not be recounted here. The important problem at this stage in the development of the industry, when laws are being revised by legislative action and modified by court decisions; when added powers are being exercised by voluntary committees and official regulatory bodies; and when the need for control of output has forced itself to the forefront, is to see to it that new law and action are based on sound engineering concepts. Reservoir Energy Common Property Since the study of gas instituted by the Marland committee of the American Petroleum Institute in 1927, a great mass of information has accumulated concerning the function of gas in the development and production of oil. This wealth of data leads to the conclusion that every oil pool contains three resources: Oil, gas and reservoir energy. I take it that the central problem of this symposium is the ownership of these three resources and that "source" and "utilization" are involved because of their bearing on ownership through the demands of equity and conservation. In order to facilitate the discussion, permit me to state categorically, that: The oil and gas in a particular tract should belong to the owners of the mineral rights in that particular tract, but the reservoir energy should be common property of all owners of mineral rights in the pool I take it that apportionment of oil and gas among owners according to the relative amounts that exist in place in their respective tracts is

It is believed that in connection with the study of unit operation by the Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. a review of the simple principles of unit operation would be helpful. To that end, the following discussion is submitted. It is not to be considered in any sense as the conclusion of the committee, but rather as material submitted for its consideration and represents at this time only the viewpoints of its authors. Growth of the Oil Industry In 70 years the oil industry has grown from a single well on Oil Creek, Venango County, Pennsylvania, producing 25 bbl, per day, to more than 400,000 wells scattered over five continents with a daily output of 4,000,000 bbl. In that time petroleum has expanded from its simple use as a medicine in a few localities to a multitude of diverse uses in homes of every country the world over. During those years the oil fields of the United States have produced two-thirds of the world's output and have shipped their excess production into almost every country. In those years several hundred thousand good wells in the United States declined into small ones and depleted shallow deposits gave way to deep zones; so that the United States crude oil industry gradually changed from one of low cost production to one of higher cost. Throughout its entire life it has labored under two serious economic disadvantages, namely, constantly recurring periods of demoralization through overproduction, and competitive development methods that are wasteful. Development of Foreign Competition During the transition from low to higher cost production in the United States, events even more significant were taking place in foreign lands. Jungles were tamed and deserts conquered. Oil deposits were found and developed until, in the words of Sir John Cadman, "the globe is now drenched with a commodity which, although necessary to life, involves but an irregular and sometimes meager expenditure of life in its

It has been long known that the gas evolved during the boil in the open-hearth furnace is mainly carbon monoxide associated with smaller quantities of other gases. A number of attempts have been made to determine the precise effects of carbon and oxygen content of the bath, and of other factors, such as temperature, upon the evolution of carbon monoxide. In his investigation of the carbon-iron oxide product in liquid steel, Hertyl showed that the value of this product at equilibrium could be approximated by plotting the value of the product observed in open-hearth reactions against rate of carbon elimination, and extrapolating to zero rate. The results of this study showed a slight but definite effect of temperature upon the carbon-iron oxide reaction. Experimental studies of the evolution of gases from rimming-steel ingots have not yet attained the degree of precision necessary for an exact understanding of the effects of pouring temperature, carbon content, and iron oxide in the metal upon the composition of these gases. Klinger2 showed that the gas consists mainly of carbon monoxide, and that considerable variation in its composition occurs during the solidification of the ingot. In order that these variations may be understood in their proper relationship to the progress of solidification of the ingot and the segregation that accompanies solidification, it is essential to have a knowledge of the condition of equilibrium in the several chemical reactions by which the gases are being formed. It is also necessary to understand the effects of temperature upon the equilibria, and further, to know the manner in which the temperature of the liquid metal within the ingot changes as the skin of the ingot is being built up. Gay, Richmond, Va.: Having followed the remarks of Prof. Woodworth with great interest, especially his suggestions for drilling in the part of the coal-field on the south side of the James river, I would like to inquire of him if he reached his conclusions after fully considering the situation as existing upon the north side of the James ? My reason for this inquiry is, that upon the north side the eastern and western outcrops are much nearer each other than appears to me to be the case upon the south side, and also that the western outcrop on the north side is much more clearly defined than upon the south side. It is now about twelve years since I first became interested in the Richmond coal-field—and until about six years ago I passed much time in investigation and spent thousands of dollars in developments. About six years ago the properties in which I was more especially interested were leased to other parties, and since that time I have had little or nothing to do with the mining operations. I regret to say the price of coals has ruled so low during most of the time since the lease was made that the developments have not been as extensive as the lessees had originally intended. The result of my investigations after considering all the theories, expert reports, legends and other information I could obtain bearing upon the subject, was the opinion, which I still hold, that the most practicable and most economical way for proving the extent and value of the field is by sinking slopes from the eastern outcrop, and by prosecuting such slopes in the vein and following the coal to the western outcrop, thus obtaining an actual cross-section in fact and not in theory. Proceeding upon this hypothesis, I sought for the positions where this could probably be accomplished most quickly and develop a marketable coal-area as the work thus progressed. T. T. READ, Secretary of the Committee on Industrial Organization, presents the following very interesting monthly ad interim report: Reports from London are to the effect that 750 housing schemes for workers, involving the erection of 128,000 new dwellings, have been submitted to the Local Government Board. Birmingham alone needs 14,000 new houses, and the Housing and Town Planning Committee of the City Council considers that 5000 new houses must be built each year for the next 20 years. Nine hundred acres of land has been acquired, on which to build 10 to 12 houses per acre for the next two years. The town of Dudley, which built 300 modern dwellings in 1915-1916, submitted schemes for another 500 houses. There is a shortage of building materials required, specially brick. Financial assistance has been received for reopening brick yards that were closed during the war. W. E. Dickson, vice president of the Midvale Steel & Ordnance Co., is reported in the daily press as stating that his corporation is planning to spend $8,000,000 in improving its plant and assisting its employees in building their own homes. The company will advance 90 per cent. of the cost of the house and extend payments over a period of 12 years. Methods of work employed in building 256 houses at Quincy, Mass., for the workers of the Fore River shipyards are described, by Joseph Meltzer, in the Engineering News Record for May 29, 1919. The approximate cost was about $3500 per house, not including water supply, sewers, streets, and sidewalks. "Comparative Costs of Tenantry and Home-Owning;" "A Plain Talk on Helping Home-builders;" and "More Plain Talk on Home Building" are the titles of three publications of the Information and Education Service of the Department of Labor. These publications should be' of a good deal of service in convincing employees that it is to their interest to own their homes rather than to live in rented houses. The same Service has issued pamphlets discussing the cost of materials.

Prof. Henry Lours, of Armstrong College, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, a distinguished member of this Institute and other technical societies, has recently sent to the Institution of Mining Engineers, and to the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, in Great Britain, a communication, the substance of which is as follows : Professor Louis calls attention to the absence of any recognized English term for the definite description of a frequent phenomenon—namely,the oblique position of an ore-body in the plane in which it lies. In this connection, Professor Louis says that in America the term " pitch " has been occasionally applied to this relation, and proposes that, in the literature of ore-deposits, it shall be hereafter restricted to this particular meaning, the angle of the pitch, like that of the dip, being always measured from the horizontal, and the dip being always taken at right angles to the strike, while the pitch is taken on the plane of the dip, in the direction of the strike. Thus, for example, in a vein or bed striking N-S., and dipping, say, 45' E., there might be an ore-body, the axis of which pitched northward, at an angle of 45O below the horizontal line, as measured on the plane of the inclosing vein or bed. If' the term " pitch " had this universally recognized meaning, the situation could be simply and perfectly expressed by its use, in connection with the general data of strike and dip. As Professor Louis says: "This suggestion has a certain practical value, and is not merely academic. Every mining engineer of practical experience in such types of ore-deposit will have met with cases, in which a vertical shaft has been sunk with the object of cutting the deposit, but has missed it, because the dip alone has been taken into account, while the pitch has been overlooked." He adds the acute observation that such an oversight is much likelier to occur with regard to a condition not definitely desig-

Petroleum producers in the Mid-Continent field, up to the present time, have been more concerned with the mechanical operation and efficiency of the gas-lift than with its possible effects on the physical properties of the oil. As a result few specific data are available on the subject and contradictory opinions exist. Some operators are positive that the gravity of the oil is decreased, while others present data which definitely show that the gravity of the oil is increased. In other localities, some operators have given careful attention to the effect of the gas-lift on the gravity of the oil. When the emulsions formed have given much trouble, the problem has usually been dodged by placing the well on the pump. Certain Fundamentals Certain fundamental results may be expected under ordinary conditions and with all types of crude oil, when gas is the prime mover of oil in producing formations. For example, the gravity of oil will decrease as the rock pressure in the producing formation declines, the change being greater in the higher gravity oils. Furthermore, the character of emulsion formed is primarily dependent on the kind of oil, thus more refractory emulsions are formed from asphaltic-base oils, less refractory from mixcd-base oils, and the least refractory from paraffin-base oils. However, refractory emulsions are sometimes formed from paraffin or mixed-base oils that are difficult to treat by ordinary methods, especially by electrolytic processes. With oils having the same base, those of lighter gravity are less subject to the formation of emulsions, especially of refractory emulsions. There are two types of emulsions formed; namely, water-in-oil emulsions and oil-in-water emulsions. The former are the more common; in fact, very few examples of oil-in-water emulsions have been noted in the oil fields. The amount of water produced with the oil influences the percentage of emulsion formed. Agitation and velocity of flow play an important part in the forming of emulsions.

G. M. TAYLOR,* Colorado Springs, Colo.-The ore treated at the United Eastern is primarily a gold one and is cyanided-the counter-current decantation method being employed. One of our employees visited this plant a few months ago and, on his return, reported that the moisture in the tailing was carrying 20 c. per ton, which would appear to be somewhat high. As this type of plant has been advocated by one of the recognized cyaniding engineering firms in the country, and a number of these plants are in successful operation, it does not seem to me that the dissolved loss could be so high, and I would like to know if any one can give any definite information on this point? J. V. N. DORR, New York, N. Y.-I am very glad that Mr. Taylor has raised this question. When I first read Mr. North's paper and saw his statement, that they had an actual dissolved loss of 21.5 c. per ton, I was very much puzzled at this high loss which appeared avoidable by another decantation or the addition of a rotary filter. Reading it again, however, I noted that the actual dissolved loss of 21.5 c. given was evi-dently obtained by multiplying the assay of solution discharged from Z. thickener by the tonnage. On the basis of 283 tons milled per clay, this means $56.54 going to the clam. He states, however, that he returns from. the dam into the system, 70 tons daily assaying 40 c. per ton or $28 per day, so it would seem reasonable, unless I have overlooked something to regard the actual dissolved loss as $56.54 less $28 or $28.54, equaling 10.8 c. per ton. Even this loss, however, is much higher than good practice elsewhere, and can be accounted for largely by the tonnage being handled, which I believe is 30 per cent. above the capacity planned.

J. Bruce Clemmer, J. B. Rosenbaum, and C. H. Schack (U.S. Bureau of Mines, Salt Lake City)—We have watched with considerable interest Three Kids development of Manganese Inc. and have been impressed by the ingenuity with which management and staff have solved their many obstinate handling problems. Mr. McCarroll has been lenient in describing the difficulties faced by the company in developing a process for beneficiating Three Kids ore. The operation, equivalent in size to a 20,000-ton sulphide ore plant, is treating a unique ore by a flotation process pioneered by Manganese Inc. Perhaps the magnitude of the conditioning and flotation problems peculiar to Three Kids ore can be better appraised when it is pointed out that two-thirds to three-fourths of the ore is floated in the rougher step and that the four stages of cleaning which follow are equivalent to floating the whole plant feed two to three times. Our experience in both laboratory and pilot plant flotation of Three Kids and other manganese ores leads us to agree with Mr. McCarroll that suitable conditioning is a prime requisite for successful oil-emulsion flotation. The difficulties of proper conditioning were demonstrated in pilot plant processing of Artillery Peak manganese ore at our Boulder City, Nev., experiment station. Over three months of experiments and extensive plant revision were required before satisfactory conditioning was obtained in the 25-ton-per-day plant. Such factors as time, type and intensity of mixing, aeration, surface to volume relationship, and power input are still being studied by the Bureau of Mines in hopes of learning how best to condition manganese pulps for oil-emulsion flotation. Other factors affecting flotation of manganese with oil emulsion also deserve attention. The West Indies are the summits of a submerged mountain chain, the continuation of which must be sought in the mountains of central Honduras. In Haiti, the chain divides, one branch passing through Jamaica and the other through Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and the Misteriosa bank. Suess divides the West Indies into three zones: The first zone is entirely of volcanic origin and includes many recent volcanic cones. It includes the arcuate string of islands, which extends from Saba and St. Kitts to the Grenadines and Grenada. The western half of Guadeloupe belongs to this group. The second zone consists of a geanticline, of which the sedimentary rocks range from the Jurassic to the Quaternary, but consist chiefly of Lower Tertiary sediments. In the west it is broad, including the whole of the Greater Antilles; but in the east it is restricted to a narrow belt, which includes the Virgin Islands (except Anegada), Anguilla, St. Bartholomew, Antigua, the eastern part of Guadeloupe and part of Barbados. The islands that compose the third zone are flat and low. Like the second, this zone is broad in the west and narrow in the east; it includes the Bahamas, Anegada, Sombrero, Barbuda, and part of Barbados. Geologically, Florida and the plain of Yucatan may be regarded as belonging to it. Trinidad and Tobago, though geographically adjacent to the Lesser Antilles, are geologically a detached part of the South American continent. The crystalline complexes of northern Trinidad and of Barbados are a continuation, en echelon, of the crystalline axis of the promontory of Paria. The folded Cretaceous and Tertiary of the central and southern parts of Trinidad represent a continuation of the folded sedinlents of the Paria district of Venezuela. At the conclusion of my paper on the same subject read at the Boston meeting of the Institute, I offered to send some of sample No. 2 to any chemist who wished to analyze it. Eight chemists wrote to me for samples; so far I have received results from five. I give these results in a table (on the following page), together with the results previously obtained: As to the chemists and their methods : K is an iron-works chemist whom I only know by correspondence; lie writes: "No. 27(13.64) was obtained by the method I generally use, as follows : Dissolve 0.8 grams spiegel in hydrochloric acid and a little potassium chlorate, in a half-liter flask. Boil off most of the acid, add ammonia in slight excess, redissolve in acetic acid, using rather more than is really necessary, and then add 8 or 10 grams of sodium acetate and make up to the mark with warm water. Boil hard for fifteen minutes, then allow to settle (cool?), until the liquid reaches the mark, and withdraw 300 C.C. of the nearly clear liquid. Add to this an excess of hydrochloric acid, evaporate to dryness, take up with hydrochloric acid and water, and separate the iron by two precipitations with ammonia (I have often tested the ferric hydrate for manganese, but have never found any, if the separation by ammonia was properly made). Finally, precipitate the manganese as phosphate." Nos. 28, 29 (13.35, 13.07) were by Ford's method." No. 30 (13.50) was by Troilus's method He writes, " I may add the results are quite as good as I expected, although for any element except manganese, they are not close enough for anything like accurate work." For a number of years many attempts have been made to use thermit in order to do away with piping in ingots. Some of these attempts were successful, while others did not give the expected results. Nearly every plant had its own method of using the thermit, and no special care was taken to study the results or to find the causes for lack of success. Formerly the principle of the process was to decrease the piping by introducing a can filled with thermit, attached to an iron rod, into the head of the ingot directly after it had been poured. In this case the thermit reaction took place in the upper part of the ingot, and it was thought that through the heat produced the head would keep liquid longer and piping thus be reduced. In other words, the aim was to keep the head of the ingot open by making use of the heat of the thermit reaction, which would thereby give the gases in the steel sufficient time to escape. This result can be attained by the application of a large enough quantity of thermit, but it would not be economical in general practice, and could only he used for high-grade material. Many steel-makers abroad and in this country have had this experience. The Th. Goldschmidt A. G., Germany, has, therefore, made a special study of this question with the cooperation of a well-known steel company, and has worked out a new method for the application of thermit for this purpose. The results obtained have been most satisfactory and reliable, and this process is now used in Germany on a large scale in many prominent steel-works. The term "modern automatic baghouses" as used in the title of this paper is intended to designate a general type of mechanical fume filter, introduced some 20 years ago and gradually improved since that time. It is characterized by its small filtering bags, enclosed in groups of 15 to 30 in steel compartments, and by its frequency of shaking, as compared to the old type of baghouse, which uses much larger bags, shaken at much longer intervals. Automatic baghouses are produced by a number of well-known manufacturers. Some recently constructed baghouses of the old type have embodied some of the principles of the automatic type, in that they are divided into several compartments, with separate fans for the different compartments, and flue headers arranged so that when the fan to any one compartment is shut down preparatory to shaking the bags in that compartment, the bags are put under suction by the draft from the other fans, thus making possible more efficient cleaning of the bags. These baghouses have motor-driven shaking mechanisms, and generally are operated under higher pressure and shaken at more frequent intervals than was the practice with the old style baghouse, and consequently have greater filtering capacity per unit of bag area. It is possible to interconnect the fan motors and the motors driving the bag-shaking mechanism, with suitable relays and timing devices, so that the operation of this type of baghouse also becomes to a considerable extent automatic. These baghouses are intermediate between the old style of baghouses, strictly speaking, and the completely automatic baghouses. They may he considered just as modern as the latter, and their proponents can no doubt cite many advantages for them. The authors are less familiar with them than with other types, and the following discussion will be limited to a comparison of the automatic baghouses and old style baghouses, with particular reference to the experience of The Eagle-Picher Lead Co. and The Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company.
