The Mufulira Copper Mine, Ltd., is in Northern Rhodesia, ten miles from the Belgian Congo border, and is one of the group of four operating mines comprising the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt. The ore deposits at Mufulira are on the limb of a large syncline striking NW.-SE. and dipping NE. at about 45 deg towards the Congo border. The host rocks are well-consolidated, highly-silicified, felspathic quarzites of the lower part of the pre-Cambrian Séries des Mines of the Katanga. The ore rocks are underlain, unconformably, by the older "Muva Series," in this case hard, green, metamorphosed quarzites. There are three superimposed orebodies, the first, or upper, orebody averaging 40-ft true thickness with a strike length of about 5000 ft, the second, or middle, orebody of about 50-ft true thickness with a strike length of about 6000 ft, and the third or lower orebody of around 60-ft true thickness with a strike length of 8000 ft. The orebodies are separated by varying widths of waste, or very low-grade ore, from a few feet up to 50 ft. The middle and lower orebodies are so close together for a strike length of 3000 ft that they are mined as one orebody. In all, the mineralized zone is about 200 ft in true thickness.

Y..(written discussion).-There is no reason to doubt that the relationship between the rate of, flow and. the impelling force of all fluids can be expressed by a general typical equation that takes cognizance of all relevant factors such as density, viscosity (or its reciprocal, mobility) and nature of channel-walls. Most fluids that are commonly conveyed by flow in confined channels are so highly mobile that they may be considered non-viscous, hence for these fluids the factor of viscosity does not need to appear in the equation. Water is the outstanding example of this class of fluids and its dynamic behavior has been so thoroughly investigated that proven formulas pertaining thereto, be they rational or empirical, would naturally serve as prototypes for the other non-viscous fluids. As non-viscous fluids can be classed all gases and vapors, most unsaturated aqueous solutions, gasoline, alcohol, etc. Viscous fluids comprise those that have a sluggish flow such as most oils, tar, molasses, etc., the' high viscosity of which is due to shearing resistance between molecules, a force that must betaken into account in figuring the flow of fluids of this class.

THE object of this investigation was to make a comprehensive study of the degassing of molybdenum in order to determine how rigorous a treatment was necessary to completely, remove sorbed gases from molybdenum electrodes in vacuum tubes. Some work has also been done with tungsten, nickel and carbon. As a logical development of this work it has been shown that the gas is present throughout the body of the metal and a study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in molybdenum and tungsten and the rate of diffusion of nitrogen through molybdenum has been calculated. Tests were made on molybdenum from all the commercial sources and no difference was discovered in the nature of the gases present, the amounts or the ease of removal. The reason for this was apparent when a study was made of the manner in which gases are absorbed by gas-free molybdenum. It is necessary to heat molybdenum to 1760° C. in a vacuum of the order of 0.001 micron for a time which varies lineally with the thickness, in order to obtain a condition in which no further gas is evolved by the sample. A sample so degassed can be handled and sub-sequently assembled in a tube and then degassed readily. The gases obtained from molybdenum are carbon monoxide and nitrogen, the nitrogen being the more difficult to remove..

The Lo Aguirre ore deposit of Sociedad Minera Pudahuel is expected to have a life of 12 years, producing 16,500 mt per year of copper cathodes. The total copper content of the ore ranges from 2% in acid-soluble form to 2% as sulfides. Sociedad Minera Pudahuel chose TL leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning as the processing steps to give low investment and operating costs. Design and operating criteria of the TL leach plant have been obtained in an experimental program carried out since 1974. Bench scale tests indicated that 90% of the oxidic copper and 35% of the sulfidic copper could be extracted to give 5 gpl copper by treating crushed ore with acid, curing, and rinsing in a column with a dilute acid solution containing ferric sulfate which is requllred to solubilize the sulfides. These results were verified in a pilot plant which combined leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. Raffinate was recycled to the leaching circuit after oxidation to regenerate ferric ion. Refinements in the processing have resulted in significant improvements in extraction to give 95% to 98% recovery of the oxidic copper and 55% and 60% of the sulfidic copper. The plant is expected to give this degree of recovery. As a consequence, the original plan to include a concentrator in the plant has been abandoned.

(New York Meeting, February, 1913.) I HAVE frequently stated that while the chemical composition of steel is important, yet even greater importance is connected with the mechanical and heat treatment of the metal. During the past year I encountered such a positive example of that fact that I deem it worth putting upon record. A prominent railway system divided an order for open-hearth steel rails between two steel works, both of which are under the control of the one corporation; giving to one about 18,000 tons, and to the other 7,500 tons of the same section and to be made under the same specifications. The rolling results obtained in the two mills varied so widely that a study of the figures is intensely interesting and serves to illustrate the advantages obtained by careful ingot casting, and, quite as pertinently, the possible benefits of careful subsequent heating and rolling with moderate reductions in the rolling process. The smaller order was rolled complete in four installments during the same months that the larger order was being made in six separate installments; but, to permit of exact comparisons, the totals of the four installments (completing the order with the mill which I will call A) are given with the totals of the first four installments of the larger order, made by the mill designated as B. The day is long past when linen and cotton rags were the exclusive raw material of the paper-trade. Wood-fiber, chemically or mechanically prepared, straw, hemp and Esparto grass have largely supplied the demand, which the old materials did not suffice to fill. But even these newer fibers have been of late supplanted, to some extent, by mineral pulp. Weighting and filling materials have also been resorted to, partly to give body to the fabric, partly to increase its weight and reduce the cost per pound. China clay, sulphate of lime and soapstone have generally been employed as loading materials. Even though these materials lack fiber, their addition must by no means be viewed, as it too generally is, entirely as an adulteration. No doubt, to a certain extent, they weaken the paper ; but for ordinary grades the addition of these non-fibrous substances is a positive advantage, as they close the pores between the fibers and lend to the paper a great degree of opaqueness and a superior finish. Fibrous talc, as a form of pulp, has the same effect, without appreciably weakening the paper. When, therefore, some fifteen years ago, fibrous talc in large quantities, and of marvellous purity and whiteness, was discovered in the neighborhood of the town of Gouverneur, it was not long before the

ONE of the most important contributions to the art of electrolytic zinc production-has been the aluminum cathode. This has been used in all major production: since its commercial development in 1916. The literature is replete with important contributions, some of which may have been replaced by better ones, but thus far there appears no other metal to take the place of aluminum as cathode material. Credit for this innovation goes to Sherard Cowper Coles, of England. When experi-menting on the extraction of-zinc from Broken Hill ore at Hayle, Cornwall, in 1893, he introduced the aluminum cathode, and in 1895 obtained British Patent-No. 20073. The reason for this dominant position of aluminum as cathode mate-rial in zinc sulphate electrolytes is its unique surface, to which electro-deposited metals usually do not tightly adhere. The metal must be of high purity for best results. It is possible to develop a starting-sheet method by which thin electro-deposited sheets of cathode zinc are made and stripped from a smooth aluminum plate. Such thin sheets of cathode zinc may be used as arc tine copper sheets in standard electrolytic copper-refinery practice. However, complications arise because of extreme warping of the zinc starting sheet after a .few hours of deposition, and thus special arrangements must be made to compensate for this abnormality.

Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the US with more than 73 kt/d (80,000 stpd) treated in this way. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automated control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. The primary reason is that instruments have not been available for the online measurement of carbon ash content or other critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence operating variables have on coal flotation are not completely understood. During the last few years, some of the needed instrumentation has been developed, while an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling. As a result, certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, Dynafloat. After construction of a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables were analyzed. To develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, it was necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known, final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy that uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.

The Circuitron herein described applies current from the classifier motor circuit and energy from the sound of grinding media to move an oscillating disc. The disc through a photoelectric cell controls the speed of the ore feeder and consequently the amount of ore delivered to the mill. THE Telluride Mines, Inc. at Telluride, Colo., is operating a flotation concentrator recovering lead, zinc, and copper with some gold and silver. The nominal capacity is 500 tons per 24 hr. The ore, which comes from several different mines, is characteristic of the district, changing from extremely tough rhodonite to soft gouge. The ore is crushed and washed, recrushed, and delivered to the mill bin at about % in. to serve as ball mill feed. Details of Grinding Circuit The material from the fine-ore bin is carried over a belt feeder driven by a Reeves vari-speed device. The belt discharges to a No. 86 Marcy ball mill, which operates in closed circuit, with jigs and a 6-ft Dorr classifier. A Massco density controller holds the density of the classifier overflow at a predetermined point. The overflow, which contains about 5 pct + 48 mesh, goes to the flotation section. Manual Operation Before the adoption of automatic control for the grinding circuit, this work was all done manually by the operator. The bin gate was set to deliver 40 to 50 lb of ore per lineal foot of belt, and the speed of the belt was adjusted by the operator to deliver at the rate of about 500 tons per 24 hr. As the ore changed in hardness, specific gravity, or in the amount of moisture, or, as the size of the feed changed due to bin segregation, crusher setting, or other causes, the operator made corresponding changes in the rate of feed by manipulation of the Reeves control. Sometimes these changes occurred so rapidly that they caused sharp, pronounced surges, which created very considerable unbalance from normal conditions in the grinding circuit and, more critically, in the flotation section. Since it is not possible for the operator to anticipate or follow such changes closely, a very considerable unbalance from normal conditions may occur, which will require a drastic change in the rate of feed. These surges upset the fineness of grind and interfere radically with the balance between tonnage and reagent control. All of this tends to reduce the grade of concentrates, increase the loss in the tailing, and thus decrease the recovery of values. The Circuitron Some years ago, The Mine and Smelter Supply Co., in conjunction with the operators at the Telluride Mill, undertook to build a device that would give close control of the rate of feed from the ore bin and to coordinate with this a related device that would regulate the amount of sand load on the classifier rakes. Emphasis was strongly laid on the fact that such a control must apply to the entire grinding circuit and must include the feed to the ball mill, the classifier sand return, and the density of the classifier overflow. If this could be done successfully, we felt that the circuit could be operated under best possible conditions, with compensations

• As part of $850,000 granted by the House Appropriations Committee for development of manganese in the U.S., the Bureau of Mines will build a pilot plant at Artillery Peak, Ariz., for development of low grade manganese ores. • The historic Argo tunnel and mill in Idaho Springs, Colo., will reopen shortly for the mining of uranium. The Uranium Co. of America has acquired control of the tunnel and mill and 12 nearby mining properties. J. H. Rodgers and G. C. Ridland will manage the operation. •The opening of a new 4000-ton per day coal mine in Washington Co., Pa., and the reopening of another mine of the same capacity in Fayette Co. has been announced by the H. C. Frick Coke Co. They'll help meet added war demands. •A 7000 bbl per day commercial synthetic liquid fuel plant, making gasoline from natural gas at Brownsville, Texas is being operated by the Carthage Hydro-col Corp., a Texaco subsidiary. The gasoline is produced by the Hydrocol process, chemically similar to the Fischer Tropsch process, but differing mechanically in several ways. To operate the process it has been necessary to build an oxygen plant producing 95 pct pure oxygen in quantities equal to U. S. production of commercial oxygen in 1946. •Over 96 pct of the class of 1950 at Montana School of Mines are now employed,, in industry, and they're scattered from MIT to the island of Cuba., • Cobalt, heretofore almost entirely imported, will soon be produced in Idaho. The Calera Mining Co. is building a 600-ton mill in which a cobalt and copper concentrate will be obtained from Idaho ores. •Plans for mining iron ore on the Conarky Peninsula in French Guinea, (an ECA project) call for equipment purchases as follows: 8 wagon drills, electric shovel for mining, conveyor for the port, 8 trucks, wrecker, 2 tractors, as well as miscellaneous accessories and spare parts. •A low-grade lead-zinc mineralization, located east of any known ore bodies in Utah's East Tintic district, has been located by a 2000-ft wildcat USGS drill hole. * Higher-than-going rates have been authorized by the Munitions Board for its stockpile program, where domestic production of scarce materials is low or uneconomical. Payment in excess of 25 pct over the foreign price is now permitted. •A new self-centering conveyor roll, developed by Carnegie-Illinois Steel, is expected to revolutionize materials handling. It completely eliminates the necessity for sideguides to keep materials on a conveyor. See P. 1028. •Great Britain's socialized coal industry employs twice as many miners, but produces less than half as much coal as America's coal industry. last year, British mines produced 28 million fewer tons of coal than the output of the same ,mines in 1939. Absenteeism amounted to a big 12 pot of working time. • Labor market conditions have tightened on almost a country-wide scale. Only 4 out of 143 major labor market areas have a substantial surplus -- less than half the total for May. Growing scarcities of skilled labor are in evidence.

A METALLURGICAL process to be economically successful must be carried on under proper conditions of control and equipment. The question of equipment is always of primary importance. In the dis-tillation process for the recovery of zinc by retorting, the retort is the all-important piece of equipment. Each retort in a working block must function as a separate unit. Over-all block efficiency is the result of the ability of the individual retort -to withstand the severe conditions of operation for a maximum period of time. Therefore retort manufacture has been an ever present problem with the operator of a zinc-retort-ing plant. During recent years the zinc-plant operator has been faced with rapid changes in the character of the ores and concentrates. Operating costs have increased as a result of the- introduction of the flotation process and the amount of flotation concentrates to be handled. To counteract increasing costs, the operator has found it necessary continually to attempt heavier loading of retorts, until a 45 to 50-lb. charge per cubic foot of retort space has become common practice. Heavy loading has brought about severe firing conditions, which, in turn, have emphasized the necessity for further improving the quality of the retort. Increasing percentages of detrimental impurities in the retort charges have also added to the operator's difficulties.

This is an era of "expansion;" and, conformably with the change in commercial conditions, the function of the mining engineer, as well as that of his confréres in many other professions, has also expanded. From the position of an engineer, limited to the determination of technical questions, the engineer of to-day has come to assume an economic importance in those branches of industry dependent upon engineering skill for their development. He is indeed an engineer of limited usefulness who does not go further professionally than to submit a purely technical report on subjects presented for his consideration. While he has the same responsibility as formerly in the solution of the technical problems involved, he is further expected to supplement his report with advice on the financial and commercial aspects of these problems. For the great majority of problems presented to the engineer ultimately involve the determination of the pecuniary relations of the propositions under consideration. The great corporation lawyer no longer earns his fee by merely submitting his opinion as to the legal issues involved in law-suits affecting the corporation; he now assumes charge of the entire legal work, including both the organization of the corporation and the maintenance of its legal status thereafter. THE Maintenance Committee of the Coal Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is presenting with this report the first of a series of cost comparisons which it plans to present to the Institute. The plan is to assemble maintenance cost on all equipment connected with mechanical operations at the face of coal mines, to arrange these costs by districts, to make comparisons between districts, and within districts. This particular report covers data with respect to mobile loading machines, including both "on-track" and "off-track" equipment. It is anticipated- in-fact, considerable data have already been accumulated-that next year complete maintenance costs by districts can be presented for complete loading units, including the various classes and combinations of on-track and off-track equipment. Data have also been collected with respect to some phases of maintenance methods and certain recommendations of the committee are included dealing with maintenance problems. In the assembly of these data more than 120 questionnaires were sent to operating companies through- out the United States. At the time the report was written 33 questionnaires had been returned with completed information and an additional group of companies had written that the information requested was not at present available but that they hoped to have such information available in the not far distant future. EDWARD HART*, Easton, Pa. (written discussion?) .-In 1895 I visited the chemical plant of the Messrs. Chance at Oldbury, England, under the guidance of Mr. France, the manager. In the stock house I saw a pile of coal brasses with adhering coal and said to Mr. France, "I should think you would get dark acid." "Yes," he replied, "our acid has always been rather black. and our customers have grown used to it. Some time ago we ran out of brasses and could get only Spanish pyrite. Our product became white and the customers began to complain, so I put a little sugar in each carboy." E. A. HOLBROOK,* Pittsburgh, Pa. (written discussion?).-Mr. Davis says, "A very large tonnage of pyrite is annually being thrown in the waste in the coal mines of this country." This quantity is much larger than is generally realized by people not intimately associated with coal mining. At the beginning of the war this country seemed threatened with a short-age of pyrite. The U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted a general investiga-tion of the pyrite resources of the country in order to ascertain what material was commercially available. The general pyrite investigation was in charge of H. A. Buehler, with the subsection on coal pyrite in charge of E. A. Holbrook.

The quite diverse backgrounds of the authors and their mutual interest in reducing transportation costs has produced some interesting innovations. A few words about their background will tell the reason for this joint paper. . . One is a shipping executive with a background of shipowning, ship management, ship and cargo brokerage and chartering, and most facets of the steamship industry, both American and International. The other is a chemical engineer, thoroughly brought up in the American chemical and mineral industries, with several top managerial positions behind him. They began cooperating when U.S. Borax was contemplating a change in its export shipping program and studying the freight cost for shipping borax from The mines in the Californian desert to Europe, and eastern U. S. markets. In the 20 Mule Team days, borax was exported in 50 pound bags. In 1960 it was still shipped in 50 pound hags. Three main products were shipped: two were anhydrous, and all three were sensitive to impurities. The products were bagged at the plant in the Mohave Desert, and shipped about 150 miles by rail to the port in Los Angeles. From Los Angeles, shipment was made by Conference steamship lines at Conference rates. Anyone who has shipped bagged material to Europe by steamer knows that the tab is anywhere from $20 to $30 or more per ton.

THE reduction of tungstic oxide to tungsten metal powder by hydrogen is a process by which one might expect the resultant metal powder to he porous. In- deed, sponge iron, prepared by rcduction of the oxide in a reducing gas, is generally accepted as quite porous. with pores large enough to be seen readily under the optical microscope at relatively low magnifications. However, any pores that may exist in tungsten metal powder are not resolved by the optical microscope, and apparently, not even by the electron microscope. Fig r shows commercial tungsten powder magni- fied at I0,000 X by the electron microscope,' both etched and unetched. In an earlier paper by one of the authors,* the existence of ports in tungsten powder was required to explain adequately the particle size changes occurring during the reduction of tungstic oxide. The inability to detect these pores under the electron microscope at 10,000 X implies that these {pores} are of a size of 100 A units or less. (This in itself is by no means proof that pores above 100 A would not exist, since polishing effects on the specimen might smear up holes of such small magnitude). If, then, these pores are less than IOO A. and of the order of molecular size, then the density of the metal powder should be

The Maintenance Committee of the Coal Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is presenting with this report the first of a series of cost comparisons which it plans to present the Institute. The plan is to assemble maintenance cost on all equipment connected with mechanical operations at the face of coal mines, to arrange these costs by districts, to make comparisons between districts, and within districts. This particular report covers data with respect to mobile loading machines, including both "on-track" and "off-track" equipment. It is anticipated—in fact, considerable data have already been accumulated—that next year complete maintenance costs by districts can he presented for complete loading units, including the various classes and combinations of on-track and off-track equipment. Data have also been collected with respect to some phases of maintenance methods and certain recommendations of the committee are included dealing with maintenance problems. In the assembly of these data more than 120 questionnaires were sent to operating companies throughout the United States. At the time the report was written 33 questionnaires had been returned with completed information and an additional group of companies had written that the information requested was not at present available but that they hoped to have such information available in the not far distant future.
