The use of rock bolts for the support and stabilization of coal mining excavations was introduced over 30 years ago and, since that time, has progressively increased until today it is the primary means of support and stabilization of large underground openings. Early analytical studies and work with photoelastic and physical models established that even highly fragmented rock could be stabilized by rock bolting and form a load-carrying structural member that would span an opening. For stability, interaction of the bolts is essential and it depends on the bolt tension, the length and spacing of the bolts, the characteristics of the rock, and the applied load. However, the development of an explicit functional relationship embracing all these factors proved to be elusive. A review of the early rock bolting investigations led to the concept that the basic element of a rock bolted roof is the reinforced rock unit (RRU), consisting of an individual bolt and the rock immediately surrounding and adjacent to it, and to the development of mathematical equations which give the minimum bolt tension required to ensure that the RRU's are stable relative to one another and act together as a structural member. Analytical procedures have been developed for integrating RRU's into a reinforced rock structural (beam-arch) member which spans an underground opening and providing a rational basis for the design and installation of rock reinforcement systems.

Forty-five years have passed since I discovered the extensive and remarkable diatom-earth beds at Monterey, California., and now I have the satisfaction of bringing to notice still another wonderful deposit in the heart of Arizona. The Monterey beds mere described at the Philadelphia Academy,* and specimens were sent to Prof. J. W. Bailey, West Point, N. Y., at that time the leading American authority upon such microscopic relics of organic life. The earth from both localities is snow-white and pulverulent. It rubs off' like soft chalk upon the fingers when handled, and has the general appearance of chalk. But, unlike the Monterey beds, these newly-discovered deposits consist largely of volcanic ash, through which the siliceous shells of the diatoms are distributed. These deposits are in the central portion of the San Pedro valley,† in the southeastern corner of Pinal county. The region of their greatest development is a few miles south of the mining town of Mammoth, on the east bank of the stream, and near Redington, some 40 m. N. of Benson, on the Southern Pacific railway. The altitude is about 2600 ft. above tide. This portion of the San Pedro valley lies between the high Catalina and Rincon ranges on the west and the Galiuro mts. on the east. A knowledge of the role of effects and interactions of chemical species is important in developing an understanding of the behavior of mixed minerals and natural ores in beneficiation processes such as flotation and flocculation. In this study the role of such species was examined for the calcite-apatite system by conducting flotation of each mineral in various supernatants prepared by mixing with water. Supernatants of apatite and even that of calcite depressed the flotation of calcite markedly in the pH range of 5 to 13. Addition of Ca(NO3)2, K2C03, and K3P04 also produced definite effects under various pH conditions. Apatite flotation was also affected by the mineral supernatants and by carbonate and phosphate solutions. The results are analyzed in terms of the surfactant's solubility properties and the mineral's electrochemical and dissolution properties. While depression of calcite flotation by the dissolved species is found to be governed by depletion of oleate by bulk precipitation, the depression of apatite flotation is caused by the carbonate and phosphate species in the system. Turbidity measurements and a thermodynamic analysis of possible interactions in the system support these considerations. The effect of the supernatant of minerals on their own flotation suggests the important role of kinetics of various surface interactions in comparison to that of mineral dissolution.

None of the industry submissions could persuade the Canadian Tax Reform draftsmen that the rate of return has had as much bearing on investors' decisions to invest in Canada as the success records of Canadian ore findings. The goverment opted for the position that mining capital goes where the ore can be found. Many tax incentives which were available until the end of 1971 have been greatly reduced. However, it is still recognized that new ventures in exploration and development of natural resources deserve a break even if there is reduced recognition of the established and highly successful members of the industry unless they continue to search and develop. The latter will also get some breaks for processing beyond the prime metal stage.

The techniques of testing the physical properties of green pellets produced in a batch balling test are described. It has been found that these physical properties, i.e. drop resistance, wet compressive strength, and plastic deformation under load, are generally related to the moisture content of the wet balls. A "criterion" method of analyzing data from a series of batch tests is discussed. This method facilitates the comparison of results of various test series. A time-sharing computer program, which correlates the test data from a batch series, generates the "criterion" values for subsequent comparison and analysis, and produces X, Y plots of the various moisture-strength relationships, is presented. Examples of computer output and use of the "criterion" evaluation method are given.

JAMAICA-bauxite and gypsum-but what else? J Does the Caribbean island have anything more to offer in the form of mineral wealth? One answer may be iron ore deposits which show enough promise to warrant exploitation in the near future by a company associated with Standard Ore & Alloys Corp. In addition, Jamaica is reported to have gold, silver, platinum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, cobalt, and a great many nonmetallic minerals. Of these, only platinum has not been produced commercially in the past. Right now, Jamaican bauxite is getting most of the publicity, but not too long ago other mining operations were in progress. Lack of proper interest, insufficient roads, and scarcity of venture capital forced those mining properties to suspend production.

Some form of wage incentives has been used traditionally in the mining industry to determine miners' pay. However, very little is actually known about the administration of such wage incentive plans in mining. As far as the authors know this is the first time a general examination of wage incentive systems as applied to underground mining has been undertaken.* This article reports the results of an investigation pertaining to the administration of wage incentive programs for miners who drill, blast, and load- mainly in underground metallic mining operations. This investigation was conducted to obtain management's views and attitudes towards wage incentives; therefore, the results do not necessarily represent accurately the thoughts of the miners themselves nor those of any organized union of miners.

The ultimate goal in rock mechanics is to make quantitative predictions of the response of rock to changes. Measured and calculated values of changes in displacements or temperatures in the rock for six different field experiments are compared using linear regression. When values of the mean compressive stresses are large compared with the values of the deviatorial stresses, linear elasticity, using values for Young's modulus from laboratory tests, provides a good predictive model. However, if the values of the mean compressive stresses are small compared with those of the deviatorial stresses the behavior and response of the rock, though systematic, is not linear. Linear heat conduction provides good predictions of changes in rock temperatures but thermal displacements are not predicted well by linear thermoelasticity.

A hemispherical, constant volume drop with forced internal circulation was considered as a model approximating a real drop at a similar stage of formation Axially symmetric steady flow within a drop contaminated by surfactants was described by solving the full Navier-Stokes equations written in terms of a meridian plane stream function Rotational flow occurred inside the drop above a computed Reynolds number of 5.8, and the change in interfacial flow caused by imposing a surface-tension gradient at the surface had a significant effect on the internal flow Although the work is quite fundamental in nature, the rotational flow described in the paper is responsible for much of the bulk transport of solute to the interface in hydrometallurgical processes such as solvent extraction.

Between 1950 and 1965, more than 80% of all phosphate rock produced in the world each year was used as fertilizer, either directly applied to the soil or processed into mixed chemical fertilizers. Of the potassium salts produced, 95% followed suit. A variety of uses in industrial chemicals and consumer products absorbed the remaining percentage of each. Future trends in these two commodities will be dominated by what happens to the fertilizer market. Farming is much the same as mining the soil. Plants remove the minerals little by little. Phosphate and potash comprise two of the three primary nutrients removed in this way, the third being nitrogen. Phosphate stimulates early root formation and growth, whereas potash is a salt necessary to root strength.

The electrical properties of this area are characterized by a function p(z) (Fig. I), which shows the relationship between resistivity p of the soil and the depth z. For such general case the apparent resistivity p* will be computed, by earth-resistivity measurements carried out by any given configuration of electrodes. General solutions of this problem appear to be very important for interpretation of field results of resistivity measurements, concerning structural investigations. Such solutions have been given by many authors for the special case of a finite number of homogeneous layers (Fig. 2)lV4 as well as for the more general case of continuously ranging resistivities.5-8

THE fire which occurred in the fall of 1906, at the works of the Boston & Colorado Smelting Co., Argo, Colo., destroyed entirely the gold- and silver-refinery of the plant; and in view of the development of modern practice in the refining of copper-mattes, etc., the management decided that it would be inadvisable to rebuild that part of the works for the continued use of the process which had been conducted therein for so many years as a metallurgical secret. This decision probably removes altogether from the sphere of practice the " Pearce " method for the separation of gold. At all events, it removes the business reasons which have prevented hitherto the publication of the principles involved. At the suggestion of Dr. Raymond, Secretary of the Institute, my father, Richard Pearce, the former manager of these works, has requested me to prepare a brief description of this process for the benefit of our members. Since I severed my connection with the Boston & Colorado Smelting Co. some time ago, I am indebted for some practical details to the present superintendent, Charles Rees, whose friendly assistance I would gratefully acknowledge. With regard to the history of the inception and development of this process by its inventor, Richard Pearce, I cannot do better than quote freely from his own notes and papers. THIS short discussion of the effects of deoxidation on the mechanical properties of cast steels is intended to serve as general introduction to the subject of this afternoon's session. The subject is covered in detail in Mr. Carter's excellent paper. My material has been collected from the works of various investigators, several of whom are present today. For a definition of deoxidation, as applied to steel-furnace melting practice, we can best go to Briggs' book, "The Metallurgy of Steel Castings." Briggs says that deoxidation "includes all the phenomena in the final preparation of steel that would permit it to solidify free from gas cavities and from dissolved oxygen of all kinds." Various practices are used by welters to produce these end results.

Y.-I would like to emphasize what Mr. Phalen says in his paper regarding the possible utilization of the waste acids in the West for the acid concentration of phosphate rock, and to call attention to the fact that this is already being done by Mr. Laist at Anaconda, who is producing concentrated phosphoric acid from these low-grade rocks. During the last year, he has not been able to carry this along to the extent he, had expected, owing to the tremendous demand which they have had for all the acid they can produce, so instead of having a. surplus of acid, as was expected, they are really short of this material for their electrolytic copper and zinc work.
