Rock response to heating depends on properties of rock material and varies widely between different rock types. By dissipating energy, surface melting limits rapid heating and fragmentation of rocks achieved by surface heating methods. This study advances a concept of rock fragmentation by rapid internal heating of a localized inner volume of rock. The working of the method to achieve fragmentation of rocks (Charcoal granite and Dresser basalt) having poor response to surface heating is analyzed. Experimental data on elevated temperature rock properties required for the study are presented. Based on the properties of test rocks, a high frequency (50 MHz) dielectric heating method of generating localized internal heating was selected for experimental study. The test rocks were fragmented without melting under localized heating below 600ºC. The heated volume required for fragmentation was observed to be less than 2 percent of the test block volume. A practical application of the method for in situ fragmentation of rocks is suggested.

THE form of dip chart here presented for the use of the profession was devised by the author when he was confronted with a particularly heavy job of geological section making and. did not have any of the usual tables or charts at hand. This was at the property of the Teziutlan Copper Co. in Puebla, Mexico, where the orebodies are much faulted and lie conformably with a slightly inclined and. much folded schist. Because of the low dip and the folding of the orebodies, the engineering, and geological data respecting them were best represented on vertical cross-sections quite closely spaced. A less finished form of the chart was published in the Mining & Scientific Press of Aug. 6, 1921, with an explanation of its use. I have checked the new drawing for accuracy against the calculated table given, and constructed an explanatory diagram beneath. As some geologists are accustomed to using the table, I have included it, since no advantage is obtained by mere interpolations from the chart to get the required angle, except as it gives a mental picture of this angle. The chart gives a more rapid and much easier solution when cases multiply so that it becomes desirable to eliminate the tedious manipulations of a separate protractor. In fact, using the parallel ruler as des-cribed, it is not even necessary to make note of the angle sought. It is brought out graphically, leaving the mind free to note the correlations. The chart itself may be made more convenient by reproduction on celluloid with a slot running on the zero line of the protractor.

It contains a detailed summary of the properties of the element uranium, including its occurrence in nature, extraction from ores, and the physical and chemical properties of uranium metal. Binary compounds of uranium with hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and the halogens, among others, receive extensive discussion, including methods of preparation and physical properties such as crystal structure, thermochemistry and volatility. A very large proportion of the material in this volume is based on the results obtained in the laboratories of the Atomic Energy Project, much of it not published before. In addition, all of the open literature has been critically surveyed and integrated with the results of the Atomic Energy Project studies. Principles of Geology. By James Gilluly, Aaron C. The authors have concentrated on the analysis of processes that are at work upon and within the earth. rather than to present a catalog of descriptive facts and terms. The development of stratigraphy is also outlined. Pictures, maps, and tables are used to illustrate the major points of each chapter.

M. G. CORSON.'-I am not going to discuss any of the papers presented but merely the question of season cracking of brass in general. Alpha brass has been known for nearly 500 yr. and from the very beginning a number of articles were made from sheets of this alloy by the process of spinning. Metal turning lathes were not yet known but wood turning lathes already existed and the wood turners used to make the mandrils and do the brass spinning themselves. Cases of season cracking were known even then. In 1915 I was connected with a small company doing a certain amount of brass spinning. Before the war its products never gave cause for complaint but their war-time products were cracking too frequently. The reason was, that due to the exigencies of war an excessive speed-up was attempted and the material simply could not take it. Today corrosion cracking of brass is most important in the case of cartridges for small arms ammunition and shell cases for large guns. The cracking takes place in storage and too frequently it is explained by the hypothetical presence of vapors of ammonia. However, I had the experience of purchasing some 20,000 rounds for the old Vetterli rifle from the Swiss government in 1905. The rifle and the cartridges were obsolete for many years and those which I bought were stored for at least 10 yr. None of them was found to be cracked or to crack in use. In his paper, Sastry proposes the use of flotation methods other than the "conventional flotation!' process as possible economical methods of removing mineral fines, The practice of Liquid/Solid separation employing microbubbles to assist or induce the flotation of suspended solids is common to both municipal and industrial waste- water treatment; and is also used as a separation step in some processing industries. The pretreatment (if any) of the stream prior to flotation, the source of the microbubbles, and the design of the separation vessel depend on the application. For example: a metal finishing plant would use an elaborate chemical conditioning scheme to precipitate metal hydroxides for removal by a dissolved air flotation unit operating in the effluent recycle mode, while some oily waste can be separated using a dispersed air flotation cell with no chemical conditioning. At the present time, the "conventional flotation" process employed by the mineral processing industry makes use of mechanical agitation and aeration to generate certain sizes and quantities of bubbles and to mix these bubbles with the pulp. Specific types of chemical conditioning are used to obtain the desired results. For the separation of mineral fines, the type of chemical conditioning, bubble generation and separation device needed to obtain optimum results will have to be determined through research. The point to be made is that while the principles of flotation separation can be applied to a wide variety of applications, the specifics of the flotation process may vary with each application. Sastry's paper has dealt with the many areas of research required to fully understand and utilize the flotation process for the beneficiation of mineral fines.

On April 17, the John Fritz Medal, the award of which the presiding officer, Col. John J. Carty, characterized as "the highest honor which can be conferred on an engineer in America," was presented to. J. Waldo Smith "for his most distinguished services in civil engineering, and particularly in connection with the work on the great aqueduct, which has just been completed." Col. Carty spoke very briefly of the origin of the Medal and the method of awarding it, mentioning the names of the twelve men to whom it has been awarded in former years, and then introduced Mr. Nelson P. Lewis, Vice-president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and for many years Chief Engineer of the Board of Estimate of the City of New York, who is an old colleague and fellow-engineer of Mr. Smith. Mr. Lewis said, in part: Mr. Smith is so well known that an extended review of his professional activities will be unnecessary, but a brief outline of the development of a conspicuously successful hydraulic engineer may not be out of place. It would be difficult to find a better instance of the success which is quite sure to result from persistent devotion to all phases of a particular line of engineering work. It began in his boyhood, when, as a lad of 15, he eagerly availed himself of such opportunities as were afforded to help in the construction of a waterworks system for his home town in New England. P. J. O'GARA, Salt Lake City, Utah.-I have had charge of the investigations of the smoke problem for the American Smelting and Refining Co. during the past four years. One of the worst burns we ever experienced occurred shortly after we began putting all our gases through the baghouse. This occurred in 1914 after the roaster gases had been put through the baghouse; previous to that time, the greater portion of the roaster gases was not put through the baghouse. Everyone knows why a hot-air balloon goes up. The hotter the air in the balloon, the higher it will go. In other words, hot gases will rise higher than cold gases. When gases are handled in any way that will tend to lower their temperatures, these gases are going to travel less high in the atmosphere and will therefore tend to reach the ground sooner than if they are turned out very hot. So far as injury to vegetable life is concerned, sulphur dioxide is the only element in smelter smoke that need be considered. The solution of the problem will be either to take out the excess of sulphur dioxide or to diffuse it high enough, up in the atmosphere so that the concentra-

The Appalachian system contains the largest area of all known Carboniferous coal-fields. Beginning near the north line dividing Pennsylvania and New York, it extends southwest through West Virginia, southeastern Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee and terminates in Alabama—a distance of about 950 miles. The northeastern part of this field will be considered in this paper. The general dips of the measures are toward a trough about parallel to the Ohio river, from the Allegheny mountains and ridges on the west. The Potonlac field is an exception; the dip in this case being northeast, the folding to the east of the Allegheny mountains in Pennsylvania being of a greater degree and diminishing southwestward. The cause of the general dip to the west of the mountains seems to be the westward movement of the thrust east of the mountains, with the large Nittany fold including other folds to the east of the escarpment, raising the mountains high above the coal-fields to the west, making a general slope toward the Ohio river southwest, and crossing waves of anticlinals west ward. The synclinals contain the coals, while in many cases on the top of the folds or anticlinals some of the veins (or, in some cases, all) are eroded. The Coal-Measures of this field are generally divided into three principal divisions, known as the Upper, the Barren, and the Lower Coal-Measures, but there is a tendency to divide them into five groups, which is more convenient. Beginning at the bottom, the first would be the Conglomerate ; second, the Lower Coal-Measures; third, the Barren; fourth, the Upper Coal-Measures, and fifth, the Upper Barren or Permian Measures.

OBSERVERS in more than negligible number appear to believe that the achievements of engineers during the last generation have been an affliction rather than a blessing to society. Quite accurately they perceive that scientific progress and technologic advance have reduced to a fraction-often a small fraction-the amount of manual effort required to accomplish a given unit of useful work. They have seen men, as a consequence, deprived of employment in a particular industry; and this so-called technological unemployment they have denounced as inimical to the workers and consequently to the whole social order in progressive nations. To those who subscribe to this thesis the story of the Porphyry Coppers may not make palatable reading, for it is an amazing record of engineering and technologic achievement. But to those others who take the longer and broader view that economic and social progress cannot enduringly lag far behind advance in the realm of science and engineering; and that any improvement in the means and method of doing essential things eventually must make the world a better place in which to live; to these the record of the development of these great mines can- not but be a source of delight. It is an outstanding example of the advantages of mass production coupled with the fruits of scientific research and inventive genius. More, it reflects the pioneer spirit, the initiative, the self-reliance, the independence of thought and action that are traditional with the mining engineer. The environment of an ore body is taken to mean not only its physical surroundings but every factor, passive or active, that conditioned the ore shoot, saving only the original composition of the solutions that formed the shoot. Collection of data related to the shape and characteristics of veins should be followed by correlation of the data and the formulation of generalizations regarding ore formation. The nature of the criteria used in arriving at these generalizations is discussed. Certain of the criteria, when used with an understanding of their underlying causes, become "ore-guides." In the course of his study the geologist must not confine himself to the immediate surroundings of the veins, but should attempt to work out the geologic history of events culminating in the crucial epoch for any mining district, the period of mineralization. The work may involve study of features far removed from the veins and related to them only indirectly. It commonly means thorough study of the geology of the entire region surrounding the ore deposits. THE following question has been suggested for discussion: ? "Are there any criteria by which one can determine when mining operations have reached the roots of an ore deposit?" The question deals less with the roots of a particular ore body than with the lower limit of the vertical range within which ore bodies may be expected. It concerns a critical line upon the longitudinal vertical projection of a vein. ? Below this line it is useless to look for ore shoots; above the line exploration below the bottoms of individual ore shoots may be justified. Can we learn to determine the position of such a line?

The necessity for getting more water into sands of low permeability in any secondary-recovery water-flood operation in order to recover all the available oil always has been a major problem. In the early days of water-flooding the addition of soda ash and caustic soda to fresh input waters was recommended and tried without success in the Bradford field. The most frequent difficulty was sand plugging. The use of natural and artificial brines often has been suggested for water-flooding, in the belief that laboratory observations of decreasing fresh-water throughput rates in measuring water permeabilities of consolidated sand cores might be partially explained by swelling of clays. A review of available literature bearing on the subject and related laboratory experiments are presented herein, offering an explanation for failure in use of soda ash and caustic soda waters and supporting the recent concept that every water used for input purposes in the secondary recovery of oil should possess such physical and chemical characteristics as to keep the clay content of the producing sands in a permanently flocculated condition. Produced brines meet this requirement. Their use is recommended as a means of increasing intake rates of tight sands and oil recoveries, as a solution to brine-disposal problems, and as a means of conserving a natural resource. Introduction There is a general belief among those engaged in the secondary recovery of oil by water-flooding that one of the most important requirements for the success of any such project is an adequate supply of good, fresh water. Fresh waters have the advantages of being more easily stabilized than salt waters and of being usable about the lease for all purposes. The use of brines for water-flooding never has been given much consideration in the Pennsylvania Grade area. The use of brines in Mid-Continent operations has been considered largely as a substitute for fresh waters, which were economically unobtainable for many operations. Estimated recoveries for some water-drive fields indicate that less of the original oil in place will be left upon abandonment than with the above-average practices used in Pennsylvania Grade water-flood operations. Lower residual oil saturations than 25 pct of the pore space following the water-flooding of Third Bradford sand cores in the laboratory are unusual. In comparison, water-flushed sands surrounding any virgin oil pool are found to be practically devoid of oil. Such lower natural residual oil saturations may be the result of a time factor much longer than economic under artificial water-flood operations, but neither the producer of primary oil nor the producer of oil by secondary recovery can obtain maximum recoveries unless full advantage is taken of all natural forces and

In high-volume mining operations, preventive maintenance programs that include standardized replacement wear parts can boost equipment availability and lower unit costs. Meeting the daily production targets depends heavily on keeping equipment working as close to full time as possible. This is the case at one medium-sized western surface coal operation producing approximately 2.7 million t/y (3 million stpy). The mine, located in western Wyoming, removes in excess of 8 million m3 (10.5 million cu yd) of highly abrasive overburden each year. According to the mine superintendent, "Abrasion at this mine is some of the worst I've ever seen. Shovel points can wear out in little more than one shift. Dozer blades some- times last two weeks, but can wear out sooner. And ripper points really take a beating. If we can replace this fast-wearing iron with small pieces that go on quickly, we think that's the way to go."

This report covers a study of three different methods for drying ultrafine coals by sound waves. Ultrafine material is classified as coal which passes through a 100-mesh sieve. During the investigations, it was found that the addition of acoustic radiation to the drying of ultrafine coal is effective in increasing the rate of drying; the effect of acoustic radiation to improve drying decreases with an increase in the temperature of the system; the drying rate increased 10-40% when acoustic radiation was introduced into a rotary kiln but was dependent upon the environmental conditions; the application of vertical vibrations to multi-tiered drying screens increased the rate of moisture removal ten times over that obtained in the rotary kiln; the formation of coal balls in any of the drier systems retards the rate of drying; the higher the initial moisture content of the coal the greater the amount of coal balls formed.

For many years the water pressure test has been used as a normal procedure to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of rock masses and discontinuities. Although the test has given evidence of problematic areas, the nature of flow and the so called equivalent permeability are seldom seriously affected by the testing tecnique. In order to improve the information on these points the Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas de São Paulo - IPT, has developed an extensive program at laboratory and field research on the hydraulics at rock fractures. This paper summarizes the main items related to this research. Is shows that with only small improvements on field tests and some support of laboratory conductivity tests on natural rock joints it is possible to obtain a better understanding of the nature of flow in fractures, improve flow predictions and estimate the opening and hydraulic conductivity, as well as the transmissivity of natural joints or rock discontinuities.

NELSON,*Worcester, Mass.-In reply to the question "Is there any final information in regard to the relation between the temperature or the rate of cooling of a piece of heat-treated steel from the drawing temperature, and the so-called notch toughness?" I might say that we have conducted a large series of tests in the study of impacts on chrome-nickel and carbon steels and have gone into the subject of quenching from drawing temperature quite thoroughly but have found that one cannot lay down any definite rule or law with respect to the effect of quenching from the drawing heat. We conducted experiments on the effect of cooling by quenching in water, cooling in air, and burying the coupon in lime. Steels that have practically no impact value when air cooled may show very marked results when they are quenched in water, depending on the temperature at which the drawing is done.

The Glidden Co., a newcomer to the mining industry, will be putting on stream its Lakehurst mine and concentrator this spring. Ilmenite-bearing placer sands will be mined and concentrated in a spanking new combination gravity, magnetic and high-tension separation plant. Glidden, well known as a paint, chemical and food manufacturer, consumes titanium dioxide as pigment in its paint business. The commodity is produced at the company's Adrian D. Joyce Works in Baltimore from ilmenite purchased in India and Australia, The Lakehurst operation, handily located in Ocean County, N. J., will dampen any deficiencies in quantity or price which might occur from foreign suppliers. This objective is no overnight concoction of The Glidden Co., because the move at Lakehurst was preceded by an attempt to start up in Florida. That project was abandoned when it was found that the titanium dioxide values were largely in rutile-a mineral which does not lend itself readily to the digestion process of the Baltimore chemical plant.
