Maintaining a satisfactory structure in brass and bronze castings has always been a foundry problem of great practical importance. While metallurgists and scientific investigators have not entirely ignored this matter, it has received less of their attention than has been given to iron, steel and the wrought copper and aluminum alloys. Investigation in this field has probably been discouraged to some extent by the complicated nature of the alloys involved. Hundreds of alloys are in more or less common use, most of them containing copper, zinc, lead and tin in widely varying proportions. They also contain appreciable percentages of iron and antimony as impurities, and often phosphorus, which has been added as a deoxidizer and fluidifier. Small amounts of sulfur are usually present. It is not uncommon to find nickel, sometimes in rather substantial quantities. Traces of other metals are frequently present. So complicated and variable a mixture obviously offers difficulties in any investigation of the various factors that influence the structure and other properties of the casting. Incipient Shrinkage Bolton and Weigandl have called attention to a type of structure characterized by intercrystalline fissures and large dendritic crystals which are frequently tarnished to an orange or reddish brown color. This intercrystalline porosity they term "incipient shrinkage" and attribute to the presence of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere under which the metal was melted. The defective structure to which Bolton and Weigand refer has become a brass-foundry problem of major importance, because it occurs with distressing frequency in leaded brasses and bronzes when these are melted in a neutral or reducing atmosphere. An investigation has been made of the multiplying factors for some of the more common alloying and deoxidizing elements for use in calculating hardenability of steel according to Grossmann's method. The factors for manganese, silicon, and aluminum that were reported in an earlier communication2 have been confirmed by microscopic determination of the half-martensite structure rather than on the basis of an empirically determined hardness corresponding to a half-martensite structure. Measurement of ideal critical diameter by microscopic examination was found to be necessary for other alloying elements, and multiplying factors for nickel, chromium, molybdenum, zirconium, vanadium, titanium, and boron have been determined. The nature and order of magnitude of the multiplying factors reflect the effect of the alloying elements on the structural character of the steel. Except for nickel and vanadium, the multiplying factors agree fairly well with previously published results. Good correlation between actual and calculated ideal critical diameters has been found in developing the multiplying factors and in checking the results against fairly simple steels. However, some discrepancies have suggested the need for a more thorough study of low-carbon and complex steels. Testing Procedure The investigation was conducted principally on steels made at the Union Car- bide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., in high-frequency induction furnaces using Armco iron and standard alloying materials. However, a few open-hearth steels were used in establishing the effect of nickel, and the hardenability factor for boron was based primarily on open-hearth steels. All bars were normalized prior to the machining of Jominy hardenability specimens. The Jominy test was carried out under conditions standard for the test.3 Austenitizing temperatures judged to be appropriate for the compositions of the steels were used. Chemical analysis was determined on a sample taken adjacent to the Jominy specimen. Residual amounts of phosphorus, sulphur, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and copper were determined on only one heat of each group made with the same materials during the same period. "Acid-soluble" aluminum and zirconium rather than total amounts were determined, as it is considered probable that the acid-soluble amount is more representative of the effective alloy. As tin was present to the extent of only 0.002 per cent, its effect was neglected. The method used to determine boron in the steels shown in Table 9* was developed by Galen Porter, Vincent Napoleon, and Thomas R. Cunningham, of the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., and is a modification of J. Naftel's procedure for boron in soils

AN EXAMINATION of the Pachuca and El Oro. districts in July, 1920, although cursory and incomplete, disclosed facts of more than passing interest to the student of ore deposits; and inasmuch as the literature on these districts is limited and some of their features are little understood, a brief account may prove valuable as reconnaissance observations to be amplified by more thorough and competent observers in the future. Where no complete monograph of important mining camps has been published a partial presentation of the data is often useful, as it sometimes leads to fuller and more accurate descriptions, by stimulating discussion. The following notes are presented with the consent of Mr. A. F. Main, managing director of the El Oro Mining and Railway Co., whose fund of information and wide acquaintance with both districts alone made it possible to cover so much ground in a short time. I have also to acknowledge gratefully the aid of Messrs. C. A. Lantz and D: S. Calland of the Santa Gertrudis and Real del Monte companies, respectively, in connection with permission to inspect geological features of interest in their mines.

Stimulated by the hearing protection clauses in the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Law, attempts were made to determine what safety hazards, in terms of warning signal discrimination, are attendant upon the wearing of hearing protectors. Warning signals of dangerous roof conditions were collected and analyzed from 11 different coal mines in four different coal seams. Primarily, signals of audible level emanating from roof, floor, or coal were recorded. The interpretations of these signals were seen to be very dependent upon coincident visual and tactile signals. Acoustic character of such signals is shown to be dependent upon the spectral energy distribution of the pulses. Roof talk signals generally have broad-band spectra concentrated below 5 kHz. Reverberation times of acoustic pulses are generally less than 0.5 sec in duration. Indications have developed which link the coal mine entry dimensions with the nature of noises recorded there. Related experiments suggest that roof talk can be discriminated from background noise equally well when wearing protection as when not. This conclusion is only appropriate when noise levels warrant the wearing of protection. When quiet, the wearing of protection somewhat reduces discriminatory ability.

PROSPERITY of the gold miner has continued with attendant construction of numerous plants, many of them small but some of good size. Many new mills have been erected in Canada and in the Philippines, end one should mention the new mill at Cripple Creek, Colo., a custom plant allowing a choice of flotation, cyaniding, or roasting and cyaniding. Flotation is a feature of many of the new plants and some existing mills have been remodeled to use flotation in place of amalgamation and cyaniding. The Utah Copper Co. has re- opened its Arthur mill and operations are being resumed in the big Ray, Chino, and Inspiration copper mills. Examples of new construction are the Mountain City 300-ton copper flotation mill in northern Elko County, Nevada; the Star zinc mill and one or two other mills in the Coeur d'Alene district of Idaho; and the 500-ton mill for the Buena Vista mine at Stewart, B. C. The last-named is to be installed underground, following the example of the zinc mill at Gilman, Colo., and he small Doyle jigging plant in the Wisconsin zinc fields.

SUMMARY Initial interest in using solutions of ammonium salts to leach native copper was documented in notes from an AIME meeting in 1871; By 1916-1917, application of the NH3-CO2-H2O system to recover nonferrous metals attained commercial significance, when it was used as a process for copper recovery by Kennecott Copper Corporation and Calumet & Hecla Mining Company. The Caron work in the early 1920s, Freeport Sulphur Company’s achievements leaching Cuban laterites during World War II, out- standing accomplishments in both eastern and western Canada, recovery of manganese related to the work of Dean -- all serve as landmarks as this One Century Review surveys a base for future technology. Current emphasis on compatibility of metals-producing systems with the need to meet environmental protection criteria provides special encouragement to researchers and engineers to find accept- able ways of recovering metals. The ever-present demand of management to design, build and operate facilities on a profitable basis provides additional impetus to apply information from the technical literature to that need. Examination of the general approach to this paper will reveal much that is firm and positive with respect to empirical results -- extractions, recoveries, amenability to familiar proven equipment and materials of construction common to the industry. Although there are many references, there are gaps in the basic scientific data that if filled could lead to even more usefulness; the paper attempts to indicate where further information is needed.

Melbourne, capital of sedate Victoria, is oddly enough the home of a game known as "Australian Rules." Euphemistically described by devotees of the game as a cross between Rugby and Soccer, it appears to the novice to be more akin to organized mayhem. They don't even play it in some parts of Australia, but in Melbourne 60,000 to 80,000 whooping spectators throng the Cricket club of a Saturday afternoon to see a match. Actually, the game is fast and grueling but the victory laurels always go to the skillful team, the one that plays the ball rather than the man. Australians also play the ball in their ground rules affecting those interested in mineral exploration and mining. Prospecting Rights: Throughout the island continent, nearly all mineral rights are reserved to the Crown, administered by the individual states and, in the case of the territories by the Commonwealth government. The owner of the surface rights cannot sit on his minerals, and the term minerals even includes sand and gravel. Prospectors are protected by mining codes or ordinances of the various governments, which are quite similar from state to state.

The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple compared to the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve the understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instances, more of an art than a science. In order to minimize the risk factors in the construction and operation of large scale slurry systems, studies are frequently conducted in pilot scale test loops such as the one at the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute. The pilot scale projects are designed to provide the basic engineering data necessary to design slurry transport pipeline systems. Usually three slurry solid concentrations are pumped at various line velocities and optimum slurry densities and velocities are determined. Critical velocities, friction head losses, power requirements, and so forth, are also determined from measurements and calculations. Wear tests are also strongly recommended and anticipated pipe wear rates in inches per million tons of solids reported.

The regular activities of the Institute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the amount of these endowments totals more than $684,000. An active effort is being made to increase the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which Henry Krumb is Chairman, and of which the other members are: George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, John V. N. Dorr, Howard N. Eavenson, D. %. Jack- ling, Harvey S. Mudd, Wallace E. Pratt, Milnor Roberts, and Wilfred Sykes. This committee believes that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of evergrowing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light.

Deposition of manganese oxides is of common occurrence in streams of the north-eastern United States. Manganese entering the stream in solution in ground water is oxidized and deposited in the stream, primarily as oxide coatings on detrital materials. Prevalence and thickness of the coatings increases with increasing particle size in the coarse sand and gravel range. A number of metals of economic and environmental interest are enriched in these coatings. Samples of 8 to 16 mm pebbles were obtained from two streams in the Shawangunk region of southeastern New York State, an area of know71 Pb/Zn/Cu mineralization. The pebbles were leached to remove the oxide coatings and the resulting solutions analyzed for Mn, Fe, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Co, and Ni. Trace-metal/Mn ratios in these streams are generally one to two orders of magnitude higher than regional background values. Profiles of trace- metal/Mn ratios along the streams show considerable detail; contributions of metals from tributaries are sharply reflected in the metal content of the oxides. The potential advantages and disadvantages of using coated stream gravel for geochemical prospecting and environmental studies are discussed in the light of these and other data.

Tits establishment being now in full working order, it has seemed of considerable professional interest to collect together, in a concise form, the various points as to its plan, method of dressing, and equipment. The data contained in this paper have been largely drawn from the able paper of E. Kutscher, constructing engineer. of the works, contained in the Zeitschrift fur Berg-Hütten-und Salinenuesen im Preussischen Staate, 1873, supplemented by some personal memoranda made while the works were under construction and by memoranda on the works appearing in various German technical papers from their completion up to date. This is probably the largest dressing works in the world devoted to the beneficiation of argentiferous lead ores, and it is doubtful if any establishment for the concentration of mineral of any description can compare with it in size. As showing the final practice adopted in an old and very conservative mining region, in which the concentration of ores has been a matter of constant practice and experiment for a very long period, these works are of peculiar interest. The fact that the Clausthal ores strongly resemble a very large and abundant class of ores found in the United States has always attracted the attention of American mining engineers and mine owners to the methods employed in dressing and smelting them. The study of their methods of concentration of ores has, however, always been full of difficulty,

POWELL*-I would like to ask either Mr. Ash or Mr. Eaton if they know of any place where the Mine Inspectors' for¬mula has been used that water has flowed from one colliery to the other. W. L. EATON (authors' reply)-We have made considerable study but we have not gotten around to very many of the barrier pillars. I would not say that any or all of them have been designed to the strict figures of this formula. Most of those ex¬amined will not hold back the water that they are supposed to hold back. E. T. POWELL-If the pillar remains ac¬cording to the Mine Inspectors' formula? W. L. EATON-We have not found very many where the provisions were followed. E. T. POWELL-Where the Mine Inspec¬tors' formula has been fully complied with, have there been failures or not? W. L. EATON-I cannot say. Most of these barrier pillars probably were designed in accordance with this formula, but most of them, if they were so designed, are not in that shape now because a large number of them will not hold back the water; they have been reinforced, and they are punc¬tured in various places. Holes have been driven through them to relieve the hydro¬static pressure to avoid a failure. They do not dare to have a failure. In many instances, the barrier is punc¬tured to avoid a failure. In order to mine their coal safely, many companies must pump water from mines that were aban¬doned many years ago. R. MAIZE-That is true, Mr. Eaton, but do you know of any case where a barrier pillar actually failed and flooded an ad¬joining mine when the pillar had been left in accordance with the Mine Inspectors formula?

During 1940, the Bahrein Island field produced a total of 7,073,919 bbl. of crude oil- an average of 19,328 bbl. per day. This is a decline of 514,635 bbl. from the I939 production of 7,588,554 bbl. At the end of 1940, there were 70 producing wells.
