This chapter on the Alaska Juneau mill is intended to make clear that "choice of methods," or the selection of proper methods, is the first essential step in launching a new enterprise; and to illustrate that when entering into new country where local conditions and physical features are new or strange to an engineer, he should respect the practices already adopted and followed in meeting peculiar conditions in these new countries that may seem strange to a casual visitor. For example, Americans going into Malay Peninsula with their most up-to-date machinery for drilling placer prospect holes found their cost to total about $3 per foot; by adopting native methods, it was found the same work could be done for 50 cents per foot. Also, those not used to frozen road conditions in a country of arctic climate might scrape the snow off such a road and cause unending road troubles into the following spring and summer; while natives understanding local conditions would leave the snow on the road. Delays in the completion of the alterations to the plant at the works of Messrs. Oliver Bros. and Phillips, in Pittsburgh, coupled with the increased demand for metal made from regular Bessemer pig, placing the firm many hundreds of tons behind in their deliveries, prevented Mr. Henry W. Oliver, Jr., from redeeming his promise to place his works at my disposal for further tests of high-phosphorus irons, until May 5th. Upon that date, I assumed charge of the operations in his steel-plant. Mr. Oliver had purchased Neshannock pig as a basis for a supply of phosphorus. My information is to the effect that this iron is made from low-grade Lake Superior ores and mill-cinder, the latter "ore" being utilized to about 40 per cent. of the total mixture. At all events the pig had quite as much phosphorus, and in as varying quantities, as the most exacting could desire. My experiments of last fall had well satisfied me as to the effect of from 0.35 to 0.55 per cent. of phosphorus in the Clapp Griffiths metal. Hence at this time my first trials were directed to

In my paper on "The Lixiviation of Silver-Ores by the Russell Process at Aspen, Colorado" (page 137 of the present volume), attention was called to the decrease in "chlorination " during the washing of the roasted ore with water, to remove soluble salts, before leaching with hyposulphite and Russell solutions. This decrease in " chlorination," which is due to conversion of the silver chloride to some other form not soluble in hyposulphite solutions, and which, for the sake of brevity, will be termed the "going-back" of chlorination, has been a serious obstacle to the successful operation of several leaching-works, and was at Aspen the only difficulty encountered. I have never seen any explanation of the cause of this failure to extract, in actual practice in the mill, the amount of silver chloride shown by laboratory-leachings to be present in the roasted ore; and the purpose of this paper is to record the conclusions arrived at concerning the cause of the phenomenon, and the data upon which they are based. THE lead deposits of Missouri may be divided into three districts, the southwest, middle, and southeast. As too much time would be required to devote a detailed account to each district, only a description of the modes of occurrence of the lead ores in the southeast district will be given. The lead mining region proper of Southeast Missouri is embraced in an area of about twenty-five miles in width by about one hundred in length. The country embraced in this district is very broken, and traversed by ridges from one hundred to three hundred feet in height, with an occasional knob rising higher. Porphyry forms almost the entire substructure of the region, with here and there outcrops of granite. The crystalline rocks were eroded into ridges and valleys before the deposition of the limestone took place. These porphyries are older than the Silurian limestones, and "belong (according to Pumpelly) to the Archaean (Azoic) formation, of which they may be the youngest member in Missouri. They are the near equivalents, in point of age, to the great iron-bearing rocks of Lake Superior, New Jersey, and Sweden."12/02/2007

This paper describes a comprehensive computer program, developed under the joint sponsorship of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, that simulates the performance of coal preparation plants. A typical plant configuration may include several different washers, crushers, and screens as well as stream blenders and stream splitters, interconnected in whatever manner the user may specify. The program will predict the mass and energy yields of each unit and the properties of each flowstream (weight, ash, pyritic sulfur, total sulfur, and energy distributions), provided the feed properties and appropriate values for various control parameters are given. The program is used to assess washability characteristics of different coals, to determine the effectiveness of different plant operating conditions, and to compare the performance of various plant configurations. A brief description is given of the methods used to carry out the calculations for each type of unit. Results of some calculations are also presented. These results illustrate the versatility of the program for analyzing both simple and complex plant configurations. The paper concludes with a description of other accomplishments and future plans.

The Cartersville mining district, 35 miles northwest of Atlanta, Ga, has been of varying but continuous importance in the southern mineral industry during the past century. Noted chiefly for its production of brown iron ore, manganese oxide ores, barite, sienna, and magnesian limestone, the district and its environs have produced brick and tile clays, slate, gold, bauxite, and graphitic schist. Minor deposits of serpentine, sericite schist, copper ore, and red iron oxide have been prospected. The obvious deposits of brown iron ore, together with some associated specular hematite, were mined out years ago, although a little ore was left in the workings. Moderately steady production of sienna reached a peak about 1930, then declined rapidly. Manganese mining passed through a relatively active period from the World War to 1931, but has subsided to a small but rather constant output for the Birmingham market. However, the White Manganese Corporation has prepared for possible increased production by constructing a new washer capable of handling about 300 tons of ore per day. Principal activity in the district proper has centered for some years in the production of barite and magnesian limestone. General Geology Geologic relations of the ore deposits of this district are more or less similar to those of many Appalachian districts. The lowermost Cambrian formation, heretofore called Weisnerl in this region, supposedly partly or. wholly equivalent to the Erwin and Hesse quartzites as recognized to the northeast, is overlain conformably by the Shady† formation, also of Lower. Cambrian age. In the Cartersville district, the sedimentary rocks of these formations were folded with increasing intensity eastward, and were recrystallized.

The paper describes the results of a series of full-scale boiler tests run to determine the ash fouling characteristics of a North Dakota lignite as a function of sodium content of the coal. Four levels of sodium were investigated and rate of fouling was determined both by boiler performance and by specially constructed probe equipment. Discussed is information on chemical and physical properties of the ash deposits. The vast lignite deposits in North Dakota are becoming increasingly important as a source of low-cost fuel for power generation. A new 200-megawatt lignite-burning plant located near Stanton, N.D., was placed in operation early in 1966. Another 172-mega-watt unit in the same area is scheduled for operation late in 1966, and plans have recently been announced for a 212-megawatt unit to be in operation by 1970. If these plants show good performance, western North Dakota could become a major power production center for a large geographic area in the upper midwest. One of the problems associated with the use of lignite in power boilers is its tendency to form troublesome ash deposits on boiler tube surfaces. This problem varies considerably from one lignite-fired boiler to another and is dependent upon such factors as source of lignite, boiler design, load factor, tube metal temperatures, and soot-blowing practices. This report presents data on sodium content* variation in a North Dakota mine, describes the results of a series of tests performed to determine the relationship between ash fouling tendencies and the sodium content, and tells how the mining company and electric utility have coordinated their operations to reduce the ash fouling problem. GENERAL BACKGROUND Until recent years it was generally assumed that North Dakota lignite from a given mine had qualities peculiar to that mine, but that within the mine, the lignite was quite uniform. In 1959, the Otter Tail Power Co. installed a 53.5-megawatt lignite-burning unit at its Hoot Lake plant, Fergus Falls, Minn. Shortly after the unit was put into operation, it was noted that at certain times under high load conditions, ash fouling problems were quite severe, but not consistent or predictable. Each time fouling occurred in the unit the position of the loading shovel at the mine was noted. Within two years it became apparent that there were certain areas in the Knife River Coal Mining Co. mine at Beulah, N.D., where the lignite apparently had a high fouling tendency for the Hoot Lake unit. Results from analyses of the coal did not show large differences in moisture percentage, ash percentage, heating value, or ash fusion temperature between the highly troublesome and less troublesome coals. After three years of operation, the troublesome areas had been quite well defined and the mining company started a procedure of bypassing these areas when load conditions at the plant were high and then returning to the troublesome areas to load the lignite during the summer months when peak loads were lower. It was noted that the lignite from the areas which caused severe fouling under high load conditions produced much less fouling at the lower summer loads. However, bypassing certain areas in the strip pit caused the mining company to disrupt their continuous loading schedule, which in turn upset their continuous stripping schedule and made for less efficient mining operation. Meanwhile, at the Hoot Lake plant, the number of soot blowers on No. 2 boiler had been increased from 30 to 55, and a very rigorous blowing schedule had been adopted resulting in soot blowers operating at least some part of 21 hrs per day. Fouling problems continued, with a resulting reduction in plant economy and reliability. During this period the Federal Bureau of Mines Coal Research Laboratory at Grand Forks, N.D., had initiated various research programs relating to the study of lignite ash and ash fouling problems. INTRODUCTION Within the past few years Clark (1972), King (1970), and King, et al. (1973), have summarized porphyry molybdenum occurrences. Clark (1972) includes as porphyry or stockwork deposits some occurrences more recent exploration has shown to be of other genetic types. King (1970) and King, et al. ( 1973) provide broad general descriptions that unfortunately are restricted to the US. Nor does the King, et al. (1973) description have benefit of the Wallace (1974), Hall, et al. (1974), or Giles (1975) data on alteration, fluid inclusions, or isotope chemistry. The synthesis presented here up- dates these older summaries, eliminating all but the well established porphyry molybdenum deposits as well as enumerating the unifying characteristics displayed by these deposits within the Cordillera of North America. This type of deposit occurs in the South American Andes as well, but Andean deposits are not well documented so only North American Cordilleran deposits are considered. Stockwork, porphyry, and Climax type molybdenum deposits are synonymous geo- logical labels for the large molybdenite de- posits found in parts of the western Cordillera of North America (Khruschov, 1959). These labels describe and define the type of deposit discussed herein. The term porphyry is preferred for this chapter because it describes the common characteristics; it separates the molybdenum deposits from the porphyry copper deposits, which have many similarities but also important differences. This usage also eliminates blanket application of the word stockwork to breccia pipe deposits such as Boss Mountain in British Columbia. J. R. Woodcock has contributed much to this chapter; his influence, original data, and thoughtful comments qualify him as co-author. Porphyry molybdenum deposits are characterized by fine-grained molybdenite occurring alone or with quartz and/or pyrite in fractures and open spaces of stockworks and breccias. In a previous article' the authors outlined a study I of the variables in rod milling and also reported data from a series of open circuit grinding tests on a massive limestone in a 30-in. x 4-ft end peripheral discharge rod mill. As a second part of the experimental program, an analysis is now presented for the 30-in. x 4-ft overflow rod mill grinding under identical conditions, except that discharge ports on the periphery of the mill shell have been sealed so that the products from the present series overflowed through a 9-in. diam opening in the center of the end plate. A variance analysis has been made of the combined data for the two experiments, and performances of the two mills are compared here. Included in the first report were descriptions of feed preparation, rod mill circuit, instrumentation and controls, and techniques used to evaluate data. Dependent and independent variables were defined, and variance analyses were made to test the relative significance of variables and to establish magnitude of error for the experiment. Significant data were plotted in various combinations, and conclusions were drawn from the graphs. The procedure and analysis in this series of tests follows the first tests and is not repeated.

In view of the gradually decreasing known reserves of high-grade manganese ore and the rapidly increasing consumption of iron-manganese alloys in the steel industry, it is well to turn our attention to the development of low-grade manganiferous ore deposits and to the utilization of these ores in steel manufacture. The dependence of this country on imported manganese ore and ferromanganese has been forcibly brought to the attention of steel makers during the last few years by the cessation of manganese-ore imports from Russia, the restriction of manganese-ore imports from India and of ferromanganese imports from Europe. Should the importation of manganese ore from Biazil cease, the steel industry of this country would face a serious situation. The present practice of steel making requires ferromanganese in large quantities and ferromanganese of the grade used at present can be produced only from high-grade manganese ores such as the United States appears to possess only in insignificant amounts. There are in the United States, however, large reserves of manganiferous iron ore which could probably be used extensively in the steel industry if certain changes in the practice of steel manufacture were made. Thus high-grade manganese ore could be conserved. Among the most important deposits of manganiferous iron ore in this couniry are those of the Cuyuna iron-ore district of Minnesota. It is probable that in case of restriction of foreign supplies, the users of manganese in the United States would have to rely to a large extent on the Cuyuna district to make up the shortage. AFTER several years study, the Universal Atlas Cement Co. decided to rebuild its plant at Leeds, Alabama. The entire old plant, which was to operate during the new construction, was then to be scrapped with the exception of two kilns. The quarry was to be mechanized, new and larger kilns installed, with the most modern type of equipment all through the plant. Raw grinding operations at all of the Universal Atlas plants were dry. However, the dust hazard of this operation and the growing emphasis on occupational diseases made wet grinding attractive. Coal at Leeds is cheap, so that a slightly higher coal practice was unimportant. Power was cheap, so that waste-heat boilers were not desirable. Since new kilns were to be installed, these could be made long enough to make filters unnecessary. Wet raw grinding could be either the old practice of open-circuit compartment mills or closed-circuit grinding in accordance with metallurgical practice. The latter saved power and steel wear and saved initial investment. This had been demonstrated in cement plants. Also, the elimination of tramp oversize was a most important advantage. Ease of chemical control was another factor. Blending in the thickener, with elimination of slurry mixers had been found practicable. Therefore, if wet raw grinding were used at all, the advantages were clearly in favor of closed-circuit grinding. Detailed layouts of the most modern possible closed-circuit dry-grinding plant and of a closed-circuit wet-grinding plant were prepared, and careful estimates were made of initial investment and operating costs. Full consideration of all the factors involved resulted in a decision to install wet closed-circuit grinding. The capacity of the new kilns was established at 4000 bbl. per day. Two new kilns were installed, each with a capacity of 80 bbl. per hour. Since 625 lb. of raw material is required to make a barrel of finished cement, the capacity of the grinding plant for the new kilns had to average only 1250 tons per day. Sufficient additional grinding capacity had to be provided for the two remaining old kilns, or their possible replacement by a third new kiln. The grinding rate, therefore, was set at 90 tons per

Sulfur isotopes are best used in conjunction with other geological studies to determine the origin of known deposits; concept-oriented exploration programs can then be developed to find similar deposits. Geochemical processes are capable of causing different S '41S" ratios in the minerals and fluids participating in natural reactions. Because the magnitude of the resultant isotopic difference is inversely proportional to temperature, sulfur isotopic studies can be used to determine the source of the sulfur in high temperature deposits. The narrow spread of sulfur isotopic values from ores related to cupolas of felsic intrusions suggests that the sulfur in the ore-forming fluids was derived from a fairly uniform source (such as the intrusions) rather than by heated ground water from the adjacent country rocks. However, geologic and isotopic evidence suggest that the sulfur of many nickel sulfide ores may have been derived from the country rocks rather than the associated mafic igneous rocks. This sulfurization hypothesis implies that mafic intrusions in sulfur-rich country rocks should be prime exploration targets. Sulfur isotopic analyses of sulfides in the mafic rocks may indicate whether sulfurization has occurred. In equilibrium geochemical reactions S" is concentrated in the minerals with the greater bonding strengths. Thus the isotopic compositions of coprecipitated sulfides that have not undergone exsolution may be used as geothermometers and to distinguish multiple periods of mineralization, post-ore metamorphism, etc. The sulfur isotopic compositions of coexisting sulfides at Butte, Mont., indicate that the copper minerals did not originate by simple replacement of pyrite. Geologic and isotopic evidence suggest that the mineralogical and isotopic zoning at Butte formed almost isothermally during the geochemical evolution of the ore-forming fluids upward and outward from the Central zone. Unidirectional reactions cause enrichment of S" in the products. At low temperatures the isotopic effects of bacterial and inorganic reactions are difficult to distinguish. Anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacteria apparently were responsible for the sulfur of Gulf Coast salt domes and for diagenetic pyrite in sandstone-type uranium deposits. Sulfur (and carbon) isotopic data suggest that the roll ore bodies of sandstone-type uranium deposits originated by limited inorganic oxidation of diagenetic pyrite rather than by bacterial activity. Accordingly roll ore bodies should be most numerous and thickest against those portions of the sandstone aquifer that contain pre-ore pyrite.

Soon after general use of stainless steels began, it was observed in practice that certain combinations of factors tended to induce corrosion by pitting. For most applications this was a serious drawback, not SO much because the structural properties of the metal were impaired but because of the rapidity with which heavy sections of the alloys were penetrated by small elongated pits. These pits seemed to initiate readily in oxidizing metal salt solutions like ferric chloride and in chloride solutions like sea water. It was observed that in sea water pitting was more frequent in stagnant or polluted waters than in highly aerated, moving waters. The steels in these chloride solutions were observed to be sensitive to long contact with material such as sand grains or attached barnacles. At points of attachment or contact it was not uncommon to discover initiation of corrosion. Pits once begun at contact faces were observed to grow rapidly, usually elongating phenomenally in the direction of gravity until the metal was perforated. Hydrochloric acid and other nonoxidizing acids, on the other hand, were observed to corrode stainless steels generally; the weight losses often were higher, but the penetration less than for the pitting type of corrosion. The causes of pitting, a type of corrosion recognized as characteristic not only of stainless steels but of many additional metals and alloys, are important in corrosion studies. A possible explanation bears practical significance, for once it is known why pits begin where they do and continue to grow after initiation, intelligent direction can be given to diminishing corrosion. This can be done either by some alteration in the composition and treatment or' the alloy or by some alteration in the environment. It appears foremost in importance to discover the nature of pit foci, for if initiation of pits can be discouraged their growth will be no longer a factor to be considered. In a multi-component alloy containing many impurities normal to production of such an alloy, each of which may play a part in pitting, and whose corrosion resistance is sensitive to heat-

The rapidity of oxygen steelmaking has created renewed interesl in the mechanisms and kinetics of the various processes involved. These studies can now be approached with increased confidence because of the more adequate thermodynamics, physical chernislry, and relevant engineering infornzation available. These combine to offer promise of useful control and automation if the details of each specific problem can be sufficiently well-defined. The hot filament microscope provides new insig-hi into many of these problems by direct observation at temperature, allowing the appraisal of the relative importance of thermal gradients, convection, and intermediate phases. All of these have a direct bearing on the overall rates and control of most pyrometallurgical processes. It is one of the special privileges of the Howe Lecturer to become better acquainted with this distinguished man. All of us interested in the metallurgy of iron and steel have developed some sense of his widespread influence by the annual reference to his work in these Memorial Lectures. Each lecturer since 1923 has been able to identify his personal specialty with the broad interests of Professor Howe. This has become even more rewarding with the background information from Professor Gensamer's monograph, "Henry Marion Howe's Contributions to Metallurgy, which brings out his happy combination of intellectual and professional activities. Beyond this, I found my personal bond with Professor Howe in his book on The Metallurgy of Sleel first published in 1891.' The discovery of gold in the Toodoggone River area is credited to Charles McClair who mined placer deposits in 1925, reportedly valued at $17,500. After he and his partner went missing in 1927, efforts to relocate their workings resulted in the formation of Two Brothers Valley Gold Mines Ltd. in 1933, in which the legendary Grant McConachie (first president of CP Air) played an active role. This was the age when the prospector first utilized the airplane to reconnoitre remote areas. What greeted the observer from the air was an area rich in orange and yellow colours characteristic of gossans formed by the oxidation of sulphides. However, Samuel Black, a Hudson Bay Company fur trader, had also noted in his diary as early as 1824, the unusual and many gossanous colours in the headwaters of the Finlay River. These gossans, coupled with white limestone bluffs and the presence of placer gold, attracted the first reconnaissance of the area by Cominco in 1929. Cominco was ever active in remote areas at this time. They staked and worked several base-metal showings hosted by limestone at the margins of intrusive stocks. These early workers also obtained erratic high gold assays from chalcedony float samples found in creeks draining into the Toodoggone River. However, because the samples gave inconsistent assays, no concerted effort was made to locate their source. Except for the occasional horse-supported prospecting party of the late 1940s and early 1950s, the area did not receive much attention until 1968. Work until this time focused on the base metal lead-zinc showings which contained attractive silver credits. Gold was not an attraction because of the set price established by the US government. The late 1960s saw the northward expansion of porphyry copper exploration into the Toodoggone. A program of gossan soil sampling (gossans which had attracted the early workers) was carried out by Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. in 1966-1967. They analysed for base metals in the field, using a cold extraction method. The Kemess copper- gold prospect was staked as a result of anomalous copper values from this early geochemical program. In 1968, Kennco continued the program of silt traversing and field geochemical testing. The samples were further subjected to multielement analysis consisting of copper, molybdenum, lead, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and silver at Kennco's North Vancouver laboratory. Several anomalous creeks, high in combinations of copper, molybdenum, and silver, were outlined. Some initial soil grids were also established. The fall of 1969 saw the return of Kennco prospector Gordon Davies and geologist Bob Stevenson to check out a well-defined molybdenum, scattered copper and silver anomaly in soils from a grid on the Chappelle claims. The subsequent analysis of several selected quartz felsenmeer floats yielded one assay which ran in the order of 0.25 kg/t (8 oz per st) gold and 2.2 kg/t (70 oz per st) silver. Subsequent trenching on the Chappelle claims exposed the source of float in a 4- m (134) wide vein of high grade gold-silver mineralization. These results led quickly to the realization that the district had precious metal potential. Subsequent exploration in the period 1969-1974 by Kennco resulted in the discovery of most of the gold and silver occurrences on the Chappelle and Lawyers properties. Several other gold and silver occurrences were found in this district by Cordilleran, Cominco, and Sumitomo, working the district during this period. Conwest optioned the Chappelle in 1973 and explored underground by adit entry as part of a one-year program. In 1974, Du Pont of Canada Exploration Ltd. optioned the Chappelle claims and in March 1980, using reserves developed on the A vein, placed the Baker mine into production at a rate of 90.7 Vd (100 stpd). The Amethyst zone on the Lawyers property, 8 km (5 miles) north of Chappelle, was found in 1973 by Kennco using continued, persistent followup prospecting of silver silt geochemical anomalies. A silt anomaly in the order of 3.4 ppm silver occurred in a stream flowing 300 m (984 ft)
