Discussion of the paper of PAUL BILLINGSLEY, presented at the New York meeting February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 31 to 47. JAMES F. KEMP, New York, N. Y.-Mr. Billingsley has spoken so concisely that we may not realize the many important topics which he has passed in review and upon which lie has thrown much illumination. The exact determination of the age of the granite, itself, is one. If we were to look over a geological map containing the region of Butte and 25 years old, we would find this coarsely crystalline mass assigned, as were others of its kind, to the pre-Cambrian, or as we used to say, to the Archean. In the course of time it was found to be later. The Butte Special Folio, 1907, described it as post-Carboniferous and possibly post-Laramie. Mr. Weed in Professional Paper No. 74 of the U. S. Geological Survey (1912) placed it as probably Niocene because of its relations with the andesite, which was believed to be Eocene. Mr. Billingsley now by a very neat demonstration circumscribes it more definitely and we recognize that it must be latest Cretaceous or earliest Eocene. We see, however, that extensive field observations, ably correlated, were necessary to establish the conclusion. For some years all familiar with Butte have known that there was a central area the veins of which carried copper ores in a quartz gangue; and that outside this area there were veins carrying silver ores in a gangue of manganese minerals. Mr. Sales's able and detailed paper, read at the Montana meeting, August, 1913, not only corroborated these relations, but emphasized the transitional character of the intermediate or passage zone. Mr. Billingsley is now able to show from observations at increasing depths, the tendency of the copper ores to appear deep down in the veins

In the year 1820 a commission, assisted by Sr. C. Fernando de Ainada, was appointed by Sr. Jose Ramon Mila de la Roca to report on the condition of the mining region of Parral, in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, where in recent years the mines of Batopilas have reached an important development under American management. The object of the inquiry was to provide Sr. De la Roca with facts to support a project for reopening mines that two centuries before had produced a large amount of silver. Although this plan failed, many facts of interest in the history of the mines were presented.. Much of the report dealt with questions that had only local application or were restricted to the conditions of labor and equipment in the opening of the nineteenth century. The historical part is presented in the following paragraphs: Abstract of the Report. Notwithstanding the difficulty of forming a just estimate of the system of mines in this mineral group in the valley of Senor Sail Jose del Parral without an examination of each of them, that which we shall say in a general way will suffice to convey an idea of their value and of the urgent necessity of reopening them. If this is undertaken, we believe the results will be of the highest consequence to the Republic, as well as to this immediate locality. The group of the Villa del Parral covers the mineral territory in which the village of that name was located. Its moantains contain large metallic veins, from which, as from the trunk of a tree, depend others much more slender, locally called ,fibras, crossing and interlacing each other in many directions. THE geognostical relations of the metals and their ores present many problems of great interest, alike for the geologist, the chemist, and the mining engineer. The association with certain rock-formations of characteristic mineral species may help to guide the geologist in the identification of geological horizons, and throw light on the chemical activities which have been especially manifested in certain periods; while it is clear that such relations, if established, must be of great utility to the miner, and especially to the explorer of new regions. In inquiries of this kind, however, it is only by careful observations over wide areas, and by the collocation of a great number of facts, that anything like a safe basis for induction can be attained. The effects of hasty and imperfect generalizations in this field have already in many instances been felt to the prejudice of scientific progress. I come before you to-night, therefore, not to lay down any laws or general principles, but to call your attention to certain facts, many of them doubtless known to you, which have forced themselves on my attention, with regard to the associations of various metallic ores and other useful minerals with different series of stratified rocks, and to ask you to aid the progress of this branch of geognostical inquiry. Your observations in the various regions to which you may be called by your professional duties will enable you to determine how far these associations are mere coincidences, and how far they are chemical and geological constants. THIS paper is the outcome of an extended investigation carried out in association with Dr. L. Slater. The inquiry had been continued in various directions and a number of results are quoted from an investigation recently completed by S. H. Jenkins. In projecting the work some five years ago, the author had in view a general attack on the problem of the spontaneous combustion of coal from an angle that had received little attention. The basic idea was to obtain a "slow motion study" of the active combustion of coal. This included an examination of the conditions prevailing in a mass of coal at the moment when active combustion ceases. It was thought that, if the factors governing the extinction of combustion in coal could be definitely established, it might offer an explanation of the manner in which the spontaneous combustion of coal originates. The inquiry arose from a detailed study of the properties of fusain that the author began in 1918. Fusain seemed to possess characteristics quite distinct from the coal with which it was associated, for if it were collected into a heap and one portion were heated by a small flame the combustion would traverse the whole mass. This combustion was not accompanied by smoke and passed slowly through the heap of material. Later, it was found that coals, including anthracites, would behave in a similar manner provided they were in the form of powder and that the particles were smaller than a certain size. The limiting size of particles is a definite characteristic of the coals investigated. In view of the fact that fusain exists with coal in a state that enables it to undergo this particular form of combustion, it must be assumed, sometimes, to playa definite part in the spontaneous combustion of coal in the goaf (waste).

The basic density equation originally dericed ' to predict the increase in density of a compact of spherical particles with the progressive deformation at the points of contact has been further modified to include the yield strength of the material. This has been done by assuming that the contact areas grow to stable sizes under a fixed stress which is equal to three times the yield strength. The final equation has the form: where Do and D me the initial and final bulk densities of the compact, u is the applied pressure, and Y is the yield strength of the material. This equation was tested with the data obtained on spheres of lead, K-Monel, and sapphire. The calculated yield strength t~alues for lead and sapphire are within the range of values reported in the literature. A few of the earliest hot pressing models proposed to explain the mechanism by Murray, Livey, and williams2 and then by McClelland3 are based on a plastic flow mechanism. However, more recent investigations suggest that the overall densification process is a combination of several mechanisms, such as particle rearrangement, fragmentation, plastic flow, and stress-enhanced diffusional creep. While fragmentation and particle rearrangement are considered to be responsible for the densification in the early stages,"475 it has been concluded that the final stages of hot pressing are controlled by stress-enhanced diffusional creep.516 The manner in which the densification takes place, i.e., by fragmentation, particle rearrangement, plastic flow, or stress-enhanced diffusional creep, would depend upon the type of material, the temperature, and the stress level used during the hot-pressing experiments. Metal compacts can be expected to have a much greater contribution from plastic flow than ceramic oxides. Also, plastic flow would be a significant contributing factor to densification at high temperatures and high stresses. Most of these works, directed towards elucidation of densification mechanism, have dealt with kinetics of the process. The results of most of the authors vary from one another and they have proposed either new empirical or semiempirical equations to fit their data. The densification rate was found to vary with the type of the powder, shape and size of the powder, initial packing density of the compact, and a few other factors such as rate of heating, pressure, and so forth. Beyond the initial stages, the densification process has been considered to be as time-dependent flow, controlled by a diffusional process, e.g., Nabarro-Herring creep. Palm our, Bradley, and johnson' have attempted to use modified creep rate equations to interpret the data of densification under hot-pressing conditions. Beyond the initial stages, however, the densification would be controlled by a process depending upon the temperature, pressure, and size of the powders. It is the authors' belief that such densification cannot be exclusively controlled by a single process and so attempts should be made to study some observable phenomenon like microstructure, yield strength, and so forth. The emphasis of this work has been toward studying the densification problem from a more fundamental point of view. Some of the principal variables, like initial packing density, mode of packing, and size of the powders, have been controlled to a great extent. The total strain produced on pressure application (instantaneous) in such a case can be considered to be due to plastic and elastic deformation. The elastic component of the strain can be determined by decreasing the load to the initial value. The strain remaining then can be correlated with the contact areas produced by deformation and the corresponding applied load. In a previous paper,' the possible deformation behavior of spheres in a compact has been theoretically analyzed and experimentally tested. The change in contact area radius a relative to the particle radius R was related to the bulk density and the bulk strain for simple and systematic modes of packing. Tt was found that a density equation relating the above parameters can be represented by: where D and Do are the bulk densities of the compact at any value of a/R and a/R = 0, respectively. This basic equation should hold for any material as it was derived from geometrical considerations alone. An attempt has been made in this work to include the yield strength in the above density equation, so that a knowledge of the properties of any material can be used in predicting the densification behavior during the hot-pressing process. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATTONS The deformation of two spheres in contact under a static load can be compared to the deformation occurring between a hard spherical indentor and the flat face of a softer metal. Tt has been shown theoretically by both ~encky~ and lshlinskyg and experimentally by ~abor" that, for a material incapable of appreciable work hardening, the mean pressure required to produce plastic yielding (for deformation occurring between flat face and a hemispherical indentor) is approximately equal to three times the elastic limit, Y, of the material (in tension or compression experiments). Tabor has further observed that the same relationship is valid in the case of work-hardening materials, if the elastic limit at the edge of the indenta-

Of the methods that have been used for studying the chemical composition of coal, attack by reagents has not, in general, yielded much information. Most of the reagents used have been strong oxidants such as nitric acid or Schulze's solution. The use of a milder oxidizing agent, such as air at low temperatures, enables progressive changes in the character af the coal substance to be studied and thus helps toward an understanding of its constitution. British bituminous coals frequently have a banded structure. These bands (of four types) can be separated one from another and have been found to possess markedly different chemical characteristics, even when taken from contiguous portions of the same lump coal. It has been found convenient to give each of the ingredients of banded coal a distinctive name, more or less descriptive of its appearance, and the study of the chemistry of bituminous "coal" in England has resolved itself into a study of each ingredient separately. The coal chosen for this work was taken from the Top Hard seam at East Kirkby colliery, Nottinghamshire, a detailed chemical analysis of which has been recorded by Baranov and Francis.' The banded structure was well marked and the bands could readily be separated. The research was confined to the brilliant vitreous bands (vitrain), the dull hard bands (durain) and the "sooty partings" main); for previous work had shown that the fourth type, to which the name clarain has been given, is intermediate in character, chemically, between vitrain and durain. The method of experiment was, briefly, to draw a slow current of moist air through weighed samples (50 gm.) of the three ingredients, vitrain, durain, and fusain, in the form of powder (through a 60-mesh and on a 90-mesh sieve) contained in glass tubes which could be maintained at a constant temperature during prolonged periods. DURING the past five years we have probably witnessed greater technological advances than in any similar period. Industry and science have steadily marched ahead. The makers of iron and steel products have watched with great interest the development of stream-lined trains, faster and safer airplanes, the entirely new science of air-conditioning and the widespread use of stainless steels. Since 1930, we have witnessed the erection of the world's largest suspension bridge, the largest and fastest ocean liner and the spectacular Boulder Dam, while even greater things are planned in these particular fields. Other indus-tries, too, have been moving ahead rapidly. This advance in a few years has been caused primarily by the fierce competition of the depression. Now, more than ever, is the emphasis placed upon quality and service. Makers of southern merchant pig iron have been no exception and have been confronted with increasingly strict chemical specifications and with much greater stress on physical characteristics than ever before. For example, sulfur in the iron must be held very low, competition demanding that it be in the 0.020's and low 0.030's; silicon content must be held within a very narrow range, and definite requirements of phos-phorus and manganese are an essential part of the specifications. Physical characteristics are becoming of increasingly greater impor-tance. The introduction of triple-skimmed, slow-cooled iron several years ago was the first step in this direction. Now there are a few customers who buy iron by chemical analysis and physical appear-ance, having found that the analysis alone is an insufficient guide to their requirements.

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indications that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious technological and environmental problems are associated with the development and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can he solved within a reasonable time framework Certainly our national well-being and continued survival as a free nation within the world community automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. Although as ecological, economic, social and aesthetic elements of cost-benefits and human desires are more adequately understood, a more rational and reasonable public and governmental attitude hopefully will result.

An invitation to address you on the occasion of the one-hundredth anniversary of AIME represents an honor, a challenge and an opportunity: an honor that you judge me worthy; a challenge that I present to you a picture of extractive metallurgy in the years ahead that contains some ideas of value; and finally, an opportunity for me to express some deeply felt beliefs about our profession and our industry. My topic concerns the technology of metal production in the future - the processes, new and old, that will be used to extract metals. The nature of these processes will be shaped by many forces - some technical, some economic, some political or social. A forecast of future technology must recognize the role of each of these forces, and I have endeavored to do this in the analysis that follows. In brief, my outline consists of an analysis of the forces (perhaps better called "problems") that will influence the future of our industry, followed by consideration of likely lines of technological development to meet them. Let me dwell for a moment on the nature of this industry and the profession that serves it. I have been engaged in the profession of extractive metallurgy - teaching, researching and consulting - for 30 years. I have always found the subject stimulating and rife with challenges of a scientific, engineering, economic and socio-political nature. It is a big subject - it encompasses most of the elements of periodic table; we measure the U. S. production of six metals in millions of tons per year; new plant costs range to $100 million and more. The supply of metals from our extractive plants plays an essential role in our modern industrial economy. We could do without DDT, or phosphate detergents or 300-page Sunday newspapers; we cannot do without a huge and increasing supply of metals. We think immediately of the inherent properties of metals - strength, ductility, electrical conductivity and so forth - but these tell only part of the story. Refractory materials play much the same part in the producion of metals as houses and shelter for men, and it therefore seems useful to discuss sometimes the ways of manufacturing them. In fact, it appears to me that too little has been said on this important matter, probably because the manufacturers of fire-brick do not care to publish details for the benefit of competitors, but perhaps, also, by reason of the indulgent indifference of consumers. Judging from the revolutions in the manafacture of iron and steel caused by using calcareous materials for the furnace-bottoms, it does not seem improbable that in the future basic bricks may be produced suffciently strong for building also side-walls and arches, and perhaps, also, for use in blast-furnaces. But the existence of the present difficulties of great shrinkage in burning and small strength against compression, which limit the possibility of using basic bricks to Bessemer converters and such open-hearth furnaces as permit the bottom to be separated from the superstructure, seems to indicate still a long and extensive use of silica fire-bricks. I am not prepared to say anything about American fire-brick making, but knowing that industries abroad are watched with increasing interest by American manufacturers, I have imagined that this association would like to hear some facts about the way firebricks arc made in my country—Sweden. Well-known as it is that Sweden produces a high quality of iron, it is perhaps not so universally known that the same country produces a very high grade of silica fire-brick, whereby most of its own wants are supplied. In giving the following sketch I can, of course, not claim that all the facts are entirely new, but shall consider my object attained if American manufacturers can derive some benefit from the comparison of the following methods with their own, and if some discussion on this important subject can be aroused which will contribute to further progress. The following discussion of the papers of Van Hise, Emmons, Lindgren and Weed, read at the Washington meeting, February, 1900, and printed on pp. 282 to 498 of this volume, comprises communications to the Secretary, received at various times before the Richmond meeting, February, 1901, and, for the most part, presented at that meeting. These communications are introduced at this point in the present volume, in order that they may precede the papers of Vogt, hemp, Lindgren, Rickard, etc., presented at Richmond, and therefore not forming part of the material considered in them. Since many of the contributors have mentioned in one communication several of the papers referred to, no attempt is here made to divide their remarks and distribute the fragments under separate headings. In each contribution, however, the several topics are indicated by subtitles. R. BECK,* Freiberg, Saxony : Prof. Veal Hise's Paper.-The paper of Prof. Van use (p. 282) represents a great step of scientific progress, in that the circulation of underground waters has never before been presented with such clearness, ill the light of modern chemical and physical knowledge. The theories of the formation of ore-deposits which follow the author's general survey of the currents and solvent power of atmospheric waters in the earth's crust do not, indeed, seem to be novel, being essentially an amplification of Le Conte's views; but the proofs adduced in their support are in many particulars so original that no one can read without profit this portion of the paper. Entirely new (though largely in agreement with the papers of Emmons and Weed, presented at the same meeting of the Institute) are the sections dealing with the formation of the rich sulphides of the precious metals, and especially the regeneration of normal sulphides, such as galena, etc., in vein-zones immediately beneath the ground-water level. Nevertheless, it appears to me that Prof. Van Hise, in the course of his most instructive exposition of unquestionable, yet still locally limited, phenomena, has been too much biased in favor of the " descensionists." This is indicated by the small importance which he attaches to the intimate genetic relation between epigenetic deposits and the plutonic hearths of the earth's interior.
