A satisfactory mathematical relationship between shear, elongation and change of orientation in the axial straining of a single crystalline rod or wire may be based on a simple model in which blocks, representing glide lamellae, glide over one another and rotate so as to maintain the original fixed position of the axis as the wire elongates.' Obviously such a model gives no information concerning strain-hardening or the atomic adjustments at the sliding surfaces and their influence on the internal structure of the blocks. Moreover such an operation could be conducted with rigid blocks only by using self-aligning grips or a flexible attachment which would permit the adjacent blocks to freely assume their changing orientations. There are many unsolved problems (see Andrade2) concerning the manner in which nature departs from the simple model in permitting the essentials of slip, rotation and elongation to occur along with strain-hardening and the appearance of glide lamellae of various dimensions and special characteristics, not fully appreciated at the present time. This paper describes part of an extensive investigation on the development and characteristics of glide ellipses in single crystalline alpha brass rods and is especially concerned with the observation of cross-slip in crystals oriented wholly within the range of slip on a single system according to the generalizations first presented by Taylor and Elam in 1923.³ Experimental Procedure Half-inch rods of alpha brass (nominally 70 pet Cu, 30 pet Zn)* were converted into single crystals by melting and gradual solidification in a graphite mold according to the Bridgman method.4 In order to remove any coring, the crystals were homogenized at 800°C for 16 hr and tested by etching with a 50 pet nitric acid solution. The back-reflection Laue technique as described by Greninger6 was used for determining the orientations of the crystals. Standard stereographic operations were employed to locate the specimen axis in a triangle of the Taylor and Elam3 projection so that the slip plane and direction could be predicted. The lineage structure reported by Buer-ger6 was present in the crystals used in this investigation. However, only crystals were used in which the internal differences in orientation did not exceed two degrees. Very little is known concerning the effect of the presence of a lineage structure on the detailed mechanism of plastic deformation.

Refractories are defined as "materials having the ability to retain their physical shapes and chemical identities when subjected to high temperatures," or as "nonmetallic materials suitable for the construction or lining of furnaces operated at high temperatures." While resistance to "high" temperatures is thus the primary requirement for refractory materials, it is by no means the sole requirement. They must be able to withstand thermal shock resulting from rapid heating or cooling; other stresses induced by temperature change; pressures from the weights of furnace parts or contents; mechanical wear (abrasion) resulting from movement of furnace contents; and chemical attack by heated solids, liquids, or gases. Refractories of many kinds are needed for the many and widely diversified industrial applications. Those in greatest demand are classified on the basis of composition or properties into a few main groups, known as alumina-silica, silica, basic and insulating refractories. In each of these groups there are several classes. In addition to those included in the main groups, there are various special refractories, including silicon carbide, carbon, zircon, zirconia, alumina, and several others. Alumina-silica refractories comprise two main divisions: fire clay and high-alumina. The alumina content of fire-clay refractories covers the range from about 45 pct to 18 pct, and the silica content from 50 pct to 80 pct. The alumina content of fired high-alumina refractories ranges from about 99 pct to 45 pct, and the silica content from about 0.5 pct to 50 pct. Silica refractories of the different classes contain 94 pct to 97 pct silica. Basic refractories include periclase (magnesite), chrome spinel, forsterite, and dolomite. Refractory materials, including insulating firebrick, are supplied mainly as preformed shapes. Other products include bonding mortars and high temperature cements, ramming mixtures, plastic firebrick, hydraulic setting castables, dead-burned grain magnesite, and dead-burned dolomite. Refractory brick are classified on the basis of their physical form as Standard Sizes and Special Shapes. The Standard Sizes are brick of certain definite sizes and relatively simple design which are used in sufficient amounts to permit quantity production. The brick most widely used are the standard 9 in. X 4 ½ in. X 2 ½in. and 9 in. X 4½in. X 3 in. straights and corresponding series of sizes. All brick of nonstandard dimensions are regarded as "special shapes." They include a wide variety of brick regularly used for specific services, such as baffle tile for boilers, checker brick for regenerators, and others; together with shapes of special design manufactured on particular orders from designs submitted by the user. Not included in the broad classifications of Standard Sizes and Special Shapes are several specific-service refractory products, usually made by companies which specialize in their manufacture, or in some cases by the consumers themselves. We wish to congratulate the authors on a fine presentation of a difficult and interesting problem. We fully support the findings that liquid or even mushy center reduction has no place in the production of quality steels. We also agree with the findings, or implications, that internal bar quality is not made in the rolling stands, but in the caster. This is the main reason why Inland caster exclusively uses the submerged casting technique after a few months of familiarization with open casting. The metallurgical advantages of combining in-line reduction with a caster are actually indirect. The use of submerged casting and refining powder permits casting of fine grained aluminum killed steels without resorting to expensive grain refiners and cuts down or eliminates reoxidation during casting. Immersion of a snorkel into a small mold may lead to several operating difficulties. Hence, the presence of in-line reduction enables the section to be cast into a large mold, at high output rates, while obtaining some product size flexibility. The capital and operating costs of a caster-- in-line mill are lower than those of the traditional installation with a separate reheating furnace and billet mill. Admittedly, in-line reduction represents an additional challenge to the steelmaker, maintenance man, and metallurgist.

The useful minerals can be subdivided into two large groups. One comprises those which are mined because of their chemical composition. They represent the natural resources of certain materials or of energy (coal). The second group is used not because of their chemical composition but because of certain physical properties or combinations of physical properties. A large number of minerals are mined because of their hardness, their electrical and thermal properties, their color or plasticity. There has been increasing recognition of the value of mineral synthesis during the past 30 years. This is illustrated by the development of improved aircraft spark plugs and chemical porcelain about the time of the first World War. During World War II the impact of crystal chemistry upon ceramics became most pronounced. New ceramic bodies were tailor-made, such as those designed with a high dielectric constant and low power loss, for use in high-voltage, high-frequency communication. In the field of refractories special materials were needed for unusual heat-resisting service in jet and rocket engines, and in the processing of fissionable materials. The "free form life," The Wall Street Jourlzal called it. That is what the young people are practicing who have dropped out after successfully completing a college education. The ones described were first-rate students who did not embark on careers but instead selected such nonintellectual jobs as delivering mail, short- order cooking and the like. We couldn't help thinking that it wasn't so long ago, that we had the ideal setup in mining for folks of this persuasion when most college grads were started out as muckers. Actually there isn't much new in this business of doing your own thing. Being a type that takes westerns seriously, we jumped at the chance to catch the rerun of the wide-screen flick "How the West Was Won." There was Jimmie Stewart playing the part of the mountain man, with a canoe full of furs going east down river. Coming west up river, is a settler with his daughters. This mountain man had on his fringed buckskins, his two-year growth of long hair and a tremendous thirst. He had been doing his thing and planned to keep right on doing it. However, one of the pretty settler girls had other ideas. The same fate probably awaits today's individualistic youths.

REALIZING that aluminum will have a great role to play in the coming industrialization of China, Chinese geologists have long been looking about for some aluminum deposits. The possible sources appear to be alunite, the alumina-rich shales, and the bauxite deposits. The locations of deposits are shown in Fig. I. ALUNITE Our attention was first directed to the alunite deposits along the southeastern coast of China. Table I summarizes the reserves now believed to exist in that region. [ ] Other alunite deposits have been found in Kiangpei, Szechuan province; Channing, Liuyang and Hsanshan, Hunnan province; Tsingchow and Chowyuan, Shantung province. No reserve figures are available. HIGH-ALUMINA SHALE Shale high enough in aluminum to serve as a source of that metal has been found in northeastern China (Table 2). [ ] In Manchuria, the Manchuria Light Metals Co., at Antung and Fushun, operating under Japanese control, has been the only active producer of aluminum. It is not known, however, whether the company uses local raw materials or imports ore from elsewhere.* SHANTUNG BAUXITE Bauxite was first recognized in China at Paoshan, Shantung province. I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute briefly, and by no means in the way of an exhaustive description, to the interesting developments recently made on the east bank of the Hudson River, in the mining of spathic iron ores. The mines to which I refer are those of the Hudson River Spathic Iron Ore Company, situated at Oakhill on Hudson, Columbia County, N. Y., five or six miles from the city of Hudson, and opposite the town of Catskill. The ore occurs in beds, constituting apparently members of the stratified series of rocks on that side of the river, coursing nearly north and south, parallel with the river, and dipping east. The principal out- crops are presented in a range of low hills, about one mile from the river, along the crest, on the western face of which the stratum of spathic ore is more or less exposed. The length of the line in this range, along which, at various openings the ore has been discovered in profitable quantity, is about two miles. To the northward, the hills are somewhat higher, and the stratification may possibly be disturbed, though the rapid examination of the locality which I made in November last did not, include any determination of this

Magnetic Measurements on Auriferous Veins in Brazil. BY MARK C MA¬LAMPHY (Contribution 72-Preprint; also Trans, vol 110 4900 words) One of the lesser known gold-bearing regions of Brazil is in the vicinity of Lavras, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul Recently the Companhia Estrada de Ferro e Minas Sao Jeronymo has been making a detailed survey of the area, and the author of this paper was requested to study the possibility of applying geophysical methods. The present paper gives a few details of the work and the results obtained The problem was difficult and the results not particularly brilliant, according to the author, but the data are believed to represent another advance in the application of the magnetic method of prospecting The instrument used was a Schmidt-Lloyd vertical magnetic field balance made by Askania Werke It did not prove of value for the discovery of auriferous veins of the type there found It is believed, however, that fair results may be expected when studying the continuation of veins that disappear under alluvial covering The data thus obtained should be of exceptional value in directing the excavational work of prospecting A short appendix to the paper gives the results of magnetic observations in the Sao Jeronymo coal mine

CONSIDERING the two great interests of to-day, in iron upon the one hand and steel upon the other, and recognizing with measurable distinctness the peculiar fitness of each for special services to which they are applied, the proposition to unite the two metals in combination, to bring into simultaneous use the peculiar advantages which each offers, has great attractions. The limited success which has been attained by trying to bring about such combinations of the two metals through the use of fluxes in welding, has led to the general adoption of the opinion that an effective union of the two metals is impracticable, or to the view that if practicable it would have but limited commercial value. Such opinions are, I think, premature and erroneous, and having gained some knowledge of the character and value of the "Wheeler process" for welding iron and steel without the use of fluxes, I submit the following observations and opinions of the matter for your information, with the hope of eliciting such a discussion of the subject as it may require. The principle of the invention is to bring the two metals simultaneously to a welding heat in one pile, and then to manipulate it.

Within the past few years, the mining industry has taken a new impetus in all its branches. New mines are being opened every day, while old ones, which have been either working at a loss, or have been compelled to shut down, are now gradually being reopened and placed on a paying basis. This growth and new life is due, in a measure, to the discovery of new mining districts, but the most important cause of the progress is the wonderful advance that has been made in all branches of mine-engineering. By means of the important inventions and discoveries that have been made in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity, we are now able to work ores which, only a short time ago, would have been regarded as worthless. We find, for instance, the electrician eliminating two of our greatest difficulties, those of distance and superior elevation, while the mechanic has brought to the highest degree of perfection, not only ore-crushing and hoisting machinery, but all such devices as pertain to the mechanical handling of ores, and, at the same time, the metallurgist, with his combined chemical and mechanical skill, has helped us to extract the precious metals from the most refractory of ores. The rheological properties of aqueous solutions of several commercial flocculants were investigated using a rotating coaxial cylinder viscometer. Similarities between the pH-apparent viscosity relationship and the flocculating properties of the reagents are discussed here. Synthetic neutral polymers and polyelectrolytes are used extensively as flocculants in mining and chemical engineering operations. The action of these reagents has been interpreted as adsorption of the polymer flocculant to the mineral surface, followed by the formation of physical polymer bridges between the particles.4,5 A consequence of the bridging model is that the efficiency of a polymer flocculant depends on the degree with which the polymer is adsorbed to the mineral surface, and the extent to which the polymer molecule forms a bridge between colliding particles. The length of the polymer molecule and its orientation at the mineral surface are important in the bridging mechanism since the further the polymer segments can protrude from the mineral surface the greater the probability may be of these segments contacting another mineral particle. Linke and Booth7 have shown that, for a silica suspension, both the settling rate at a given polymer addition and the maximum settling rate obtainable increase with increasing molecular weight. GOLD was discovered in the Sierra Nevada by J. W. Marshall on Jan. 2, 1848. The town: of Grass Valley soon sprang up and contained several stores in 1849; but the population of the town has always reflected the fluctuations in quartz mining. Gold-bearing quartz was found on Gold Hill in September 1850, and in the next two years most of the quartz bearing veins in the vicinity were located. At first, the quartz was crushed in mortars with spring poles; the Huff Co. took out $20,000 in this manner during the winter and spring of 1851. The first mill was put up in January, 1851. In 1866, there .were in Grass Valley 248 stamps, crushing 71,420 tons of ore with an average yield of $30 to $35; in Nevada City, there were 142 stamps, crushing 14,200, tons, with an average value of $25. But in 1918, only two properties in. this region, the Empire and the North Star, were producing. Since then, there has. been a revival of mining in the district and the following properties are being opened up: The Golden Center, Grass Valley Gold. Mines CO , Idaho-Maryland Mines Co., while the Sultana is kept unwatered and work is going on in a half dozen small properties.

In this paper the authors present the background information to preheating and its development and describe the facilities available at the British Carbonization Research Association. The results obtained at BCRA including those collected during commissioning of the new plant at BCRA are summarized and reference is made to the research work planned for the next stage. The enlarged test-plant facilities at the British Carbonization Research Association embrace both 10-t (4.2 m high) and 17-t (6.5 m high) test ovens and two types of preheater, the preheated coal being charged by either gravity or pipeline. During the commissioning of the new equipment, an extensive programme on preheating was initiated and the paper includes the results obtained so far. These cover tests on wet and preheated coals and commercial blends, the use of Rosin- and Cerchar-type preheaters and charging by both gravity and pipeline systems to the 10-t and 17-t ovens. Accordingly, for the first time a direct comparison is possible of both the performances of the plants and the qualities of the respective products. The paper also outlines the findings from a study of the carryover of solids during the charging of preheated coal and of the treatment of those solids.

As the radical element has secured control of the various local printers' unions of New- York City, 250 magazines have temporarily suspended publication rather than grant their demands. The actions of. these local unions have been repudiated by the officers of the different inter-national unions, who are seeking in every way to carry out their agree-ments with the publishers. The charters of the local pressmen's and feeders' unions have been revoked by the international officers and new local unions are being formed. Members of the typographical union are not, as yet, directly affected by the strike, but many of them are taking "vacations," which accomplishes the same purpose as the strike but without the odium. The Engineering and Mining Journal, with true engineering spirit refusing to admit insuperable obstacles, is sending out a two-page printed market bulletin, together with two typewritten pages, making an an-nouncement of its predicament and giving brief items of mining news. Thus s brought home to the members of the mining profession in a very direct way the pernicious results of unrestrained control of labor organi-zations-by foreign and un-American elements. No sermon on this sub-ject is required, as the facts themselves are sufficiently eloquent.

Effective procedures for automating X-ray assaying by use of a computer are described. These methods have advanced the reliability and accuracy of X-ray data, resulting in improved assay measurements for operations and process control. Assaying by X-ray fluorescence has been increasingly used in the mining industry, both for analyzing solid H.R. COOPER and R.L. VAUGHN, Members AIME, are Systems Manager-Process Control and Senior Systems Analyst, respectively, Scientific & Engineering Computer Center, Ken-necott Copper Corp., Salt Lake City, Utah. TP 68B236. Manuscript, Sept. 16, 1968. Discussion of this paper, submitted in duplicate prior to Dec. 15, 1969, will appear in SME Transactions, March 1970, and AIME Transactions, 1970, Vol. 247. samples for smelter, mill, and mine quality control and for continuous stream analysis of mill pulps. The important advantages of X-ray methods in laboratory assaying are reduced analysis cost, and for on-stream analysis, immediate assay information on concentrator streams. Of the numerous reports concerning X-ray analysis in mining operations, one is referenced which can be noted particularly in conjunction with this report.' Continuous X-ray analyzers have been installed at Kennecott and other mining companies for operations guidance and trend information for a number of years. As it is the plan of the War Department to return 400,000 soldiers a month during the next four months, Colonel Arthur Woods, Special Assistant Secretary f War, has requested the Engineering Societies to assist the Government by soliciting their members to advise the respective societies, at the earliest possible moment, f any place where companies can employ returned soldiers. This request applies not only to the professional men who are returning but also to the miners, mechanics and other skilled labor among the enlisted men. Army discipline has not only made these men think more quickly but also more willing and obedient workers. The whole training has been conducive to regular habits and clean living steadying these men and fitting them to meet emergencies more quickly and has instilled more loyalty to their superiors and to their jobs. Further, the military instruction they have received has increased the men's powers f concentration. The War Department cannot too strongly bring before the employers of skilled labor the fact that the employment f discharged soldiers will be advantageous to the employer and economically beneficial to the country. Many months ago, the ME staff began thinking about what to put on the February cover of the Centennial Commemorative issue. We have considered photographs of mines, equipment, symbolic artwork and various collages. Our theme is "the next 100 years in mining" and the cover ideally should convey a related message or idea. All of us are convinced that there are many exciting technical changes that will be coming. But even so, we decided that, in our opinion, the engineer is the most vital factor. For this reason we chose to put a man on the cover of this issue. At first it was going to be the face of a man with whom each member could conceivably identify himself. It was one of the Bobs on our staff (we have four) who came up with the thought that since it's the future we are talking about, we should have a young man's or a student's face. Of course we firmed up our idea at the ninth hour, and it was too late to canvass the mining schools. However, by a stroke of luck, we were rapping with a group of University of Arizona students on the terrace of the Pioneer Hotel on December 7, 1970, and met Dave Bolles.

Plans have been completed with only details to be arranged for the first Metals Branch Conference in the Northwest. The two day meeting will be held jointly with the Industrial Minerals Div. on Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10, 1952, at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane, Wash. For, some time the metals activities in this area have been neglected. Expansion of metal producing and fabricating industries in Washington and neighboring states has brought sufficient interest to insure the success of such a meeting. A committee has been hard at work for several months. Nonferrous extractive metallurgy men will find an extensive program in the April issue of JOURNAL OF METALS. Sessions for iron and steel producers, physical metallurgists, and educators will make the Metals Branch picture complete. Metals Branch members residing in Washington, British Columbia, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, and Utah, or who can be in the Northwest at this time should make plans now to attend. A Metals Branch luncheon is planned for Friday and a dinner jointly with the Industrial Minerals Div. is planned for Saturday according to F. R. Morral, metallurgist with the metallurgical research div. of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp., P. O. Box 1451, Spokane, Wash.
