In connection with perfecting a system of pneumatic concentration I had in view the improvement of machines for crushing and pulverizing ores. A study of the whole subject convinced me that the principle upon which the construction of the Blake crusher, and that of rolls, is based, possessed the mechanical elements which, if perfected and simplified, would make these machines the successful rivals of every other device. It is well-known that until very recently the stamp-battery held undisputed possession of the field; and mill-men and mill-builders almost universally believed that stamps would not be superseded by any other machine for fine crushing. The first step to drive stamps from the field was the introduction of rollers in the Bertrand and the Mt. Cory mills. In both of these mills the great superiority and economy of a system of crushing with rollers instead of stamps has been fully demonstrated. While perfecting the rollers, I had the fact confronting me that they had frequently been tried without success. In fact, the universal opinion prevailed that rollers could be used only for coarse, and not for fine crushing. The secret of the difficulty I discovered to lie in the imperfect and weak character of the rolls heretofore used, due to a misconception of the requirements for a machine for such work, and a failure to appreciate the advantages of continuous, rolling, crshing- surfaces, operating on the toggle-lever principle, which gives the greatest crushing pressure with the least power. expended, and the minimum of wear.

E. V. Crane.*—I want to ask Dr. Goetzel concerning the control of atmosphere in heating and pressing. Was the heating and pressing done in the die, or were the two kept separate there? C. G. Goetzel.—The setup used for this investigation implied heating the die to the temperature at which the work was to proceed, introducing a preformed compact into the hot die. The atmosphere was supplied through an annular chamber from which it passed through two holes into the die cavity. E. V. CRane.—The compact was not preheated? C. G. Goetzel.—The compact was not preheated. Tee Chairman.—In the course of recent studies on the effect of time of heating upon the tensile strength and hardness, I have observed that there is often a maximum in tensile strength and hardness reached before complete homogenization has been attained. The magnitude of each mechanical Property changes rapidly with time in the early stages of sintering, the more so as temperature increases. For these reasons it seems that the comparison of values obtained by heating for the same time at a series of temperatures may be deceptive. Not only may those heated at higher temperatures give higher tensile readings, but the reverse may be true if the maximum in the tensile strength versus time curve has been passed. A better basis for comparison would be that of equal degree of diffusion. C' " Goetzel.—Thank you, Professor Rhines, for this interesting contribution. I would like to add here that I have noticed a similar effect with straight copper. There is, of course, the possibility that this maximum in hardness and tensile strength may be caused by work-hardening.

THE processes of hardening and tempering steel tools within the past 15 or 20 years have been so developed that the forward strides of the industry can scarcely be followed by the average observer. No small part of the credit for this phenomenal advancement is due to the improved methods of measuring the high temperatures necessary. Pyrometry has made possible the discovery and use of the many special alloy steels the wonderful properties of which are revolutionizing the industrial world. So sensitive are these steels to changes of temperature that often a variation of only 10° F. at a critical point of the heat treatment will cause the failure of the tool. In the tool-manufacturing industry today, accurate control of the many heating operations is imperative. The principal processes in the manufacture of tools that require accurate high-temperature measurements are annealing, carburizing, hardening, tempering, and laboratory research. Several other operations, such as forging and straightening, use rougher and correspondingly less accurate methods. These operations are usually performed in the following approximate ranges of temperature: DEGREES F. DEGREES F. Annealing 1000 to 1700 Tempering 200 to 1200 Carburizing 1400 to 1000 Forging 1400 to 1800 Hardening 1400 to 2500 Straightening 300 to 1300 Laboratory research covers the entire range. Annealing and carburizing are usually done in muffle or semi-muffle furnaces, heated with coal, coke, oil, gas, or electricity. Many of them are of large size, holding several tons of steel at one charge. Both indicating and recording pyrometers are used. The recording instruments are generally of the thermoelectric type, while for the indicating, both optical and thermoelectric are used.

While the old-time melter was satisfied to bring his metal out in the desired condition, and therefore took care to have the slag liquid enough, the importance of a thorough knowledge of the slag is at present recognized in all up-to-date melting-shops. Formerly slag or cinder was considered a necessary evil, accumulating in some mysterious way wherever a man was striving to produce a clean metal. Nowadays we deliberately aim at a well-defined slag, which varies with the nature of the process and the product. In steel-making we need slag for two main purposes, namely, refining and protecting the metal. To refine metal, essentially oxidizing and reducing processes are required, while to protect the metal we need a reducing or, still better, a neutral atmosphere. Although an absolutely neutral condition between steel, on one side, and the containing vessel and the slag, on the other, is an imaginary conception, the various furnaces in use for the production of liquid steel maybe arranged with respect to the attainment of this ideal in about the following order of merit: converter, open-hearth, crucible, and electric furnace. In dealing with the subject we will find it convenient to avail ourselves of the terms of physical chemistry, which yield a simple conception of the matter and an expedient way of expression. Slag and metal at large are not mixable with each other, and we will therefore call them the two " immiscible phases," though there are certain compounds which dissolve in both phases under conditions to be considered later. The attention of the Institute has been called by Prof. John A. Church* and Mr. W. Lawrence Austin? to the free-milling ores of the Tombstone mines and their treatment, but the silver-bearing man ganese ores of the district have received only a passing notice. As these ores show some interesting peculiarities, and have yielded not less than 750,000 ounces of silver, they are worthy of some study. The Knoxville, Lucky Cuss, Luck Sure, and Wedge mines (named in the order of their importance) are situated along the northern border of the district. They have been the leading producers of this manganese ore, and possess the same general characteristics. Special attention will be given to the Knoxville, as it has been the one most extensively developed. The limestone belt, in which the Knoxville ore bodies occur, has an easterly and westerly trend, is about 1680 feet wide, and rests on granite on the north, the plane of contact being nearly vertical. It is overlain by quartzite, the contact-plane having a dip of 82°. Some mining has been done along these contacts, and a considerable amount of pay ore has been extracted, but development has been very superficial. The ore found along these contact planes contains very little manganese, and differs entirely from the ore in the lime stones. No attempt will he made to assign this limestone country-rock to a particular geological horizon, as no fossils have been found in it. THE gypsum industry of Canada, like all others connected with the construction business, has felt the full effect of the depression during the past few years, and sales of its products have been greatly curtailed. The year 1934, however, saw a decided turn for the better and a gradual but steady improvement is noticeable in all its branches. In many ways the depression has been a blessing in disguise to the gypsum industry; during the years from 1926 to 1930, demand increased so rapidly that companies were forced to expand and often new apparatus and machinery were placed in operation regardless of expense, or plants already existing were taxed to their limit and forced to keep running with the minimum amount of repairs. The depression, therefore, has really given the industry what might be called a breathing spell, in which it has had time to take stock of its position, to reduce its costs of production, to devote more serious attention to the quality of its products, and to con-solidate its operations into a smooth working whole, which as conditions improve will enable it to meet the demands of the trade with more varied products of a quality hitherto unattained. Progress in the gypsum industry, however, has not been confined to the years of the depression, for some of the greatest advances occurred under the spur of increased demand for its products by the building trade. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly some of the out-standing trends in the development of the gypsum industry in Canada during the past 10 or 12 years.

New economic forces are at work in the petroleum industry. In order to visualize these forces and to see clearly their bearing upon the producer, refiner, and marketer, it is necessary, first, to go back and gain a perspective of the economic evolution of the business. Early Trend to Integration For several decades prior to 1911, the outstanding feature of the petroleum industry was a trend toward integration, culminating in a huge combine, the Standard Oil Co. An important aspect of this integrative trend, however, was its concentration upon a combination and control of refining and marketing, leaving crude oil production, for the most part, to the exigencies of small-unit competition. It is a noteworthy coincidence that during this era the law of oil and gas was formulated and applied, whereby these substances had to be reduced to possession to establish ownership; and the forces of competition in crude oil production were thereby intensified. It was to the interest of an industry, safeguarded in its control of manufacturing and markets, to have supply stimulated by legal convention as well as by individual initiative in order that the growing demand could be met without interruption. And so overproduction of crude oil during this era was no handicap, but rather an aid, to the progress of the industry. Disintegration But the idea of superintegration, despite its efficiencies, became repugnant to the temper of the times and so the Standard Oil Co. was dissolved by Court decree—disintegrated into over 30 parts. And thus, in 1911, was ushered in the second era of the petroleum industry, a period of intense competition. This era coincided with the development of automotive transportation, and a tremendous growth resulted in the effort to keep pace with the mounting demand for gasoline. The less developed nations maintaining a free enterprise economy (to which this chapter is addressed) have real and substantial opportunities to lay a foundation for general economic progress by using their mineral resources. Most of these nations have mineral resources which could be developed. By seizing these opportunities, nations seeking rapid economic development can secure a source of foreign exchange earnings to finance the imports needed for growth and, at the same time, increase the technical knowledge and well-being of an important part of their population. History clearly shows the manner in which most of the currently industrialized nations have used mineral resources to support their development. Indeed, few nations have managed to achieve a high level of income without a firm base of mineral resource development. The main exceptions appear to be the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, and New Zealand, and the last two have based their prosperity on a highly efficient agriculture. Economic growth in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, and Russia was importantly based on the use of indigenous mineral resources. Despite this record of accomplishment through mineral development, many of the currently less developed nations are not taking advantage of the opportunities available in the mineral field. Restrictive laws or practices in many such nations operate effectively to prevent development of mineral resources. This failure to grasp real opportunities for development is based on a series of arguments that the mineral field offers few substantial and attainable advantages. Among these, the following propositions appear the most important:

A MARK, Boren, and westgrenl in their X-ray diffraction study of manganese alloys with 10 to 25 at. pct Si reported the occurrence of a phase with complex crystal structure in a Mn + 14.5 at. pct Si alloy after annealing at 800° or at 600°C. Recently Kuzma and Gladyshevskii2 identified Mn6Si as an R phase,3,4 the second binary R phase known. (A binary R phase was previously found in the Mn-Ti system by Waterstrat.5) A ternary R phase was reported earlier0 near the Mn-Si binary border of the Ti-Mn-Si system at 1000°C. In the light of the Russian work it now appears that this "ternary" R phase may be in fact an extension of the binary (Mn6Si)R phase. As already found by Amark, Boren, and Westgren, the corresponding binary phase is absent at 1000°C; the effect of titanium is evidently to stabilize it up to higher temperatures. In a recent paper Wieser and Forgeng7 gave the boundaries of this binary phase, which they referred to as 6. In order to re-examine the identity of this phase, an alloy of Mn + 14.5 at. pct Si was prepared by induction melting in helium atmosphere and annealed for 3 days at 800°C. The powder pattern, taken with an asymmetrical focusing camera of large dispersion and shown in Table I, was found to be that of the R phase, in agreement with the results of Kuzma and Gladyshevskii. FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,900. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation,' the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service. "It shall be within the discretion of the Board of Directors to establish a medal to be known as the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal to be awarded at such a time and under such rules as may be determined by the Board of Directors, for Distinguished Achievement in Mining Administration." The establishment of this medal was announced at the annual meeting in February, 1932, the term "mining" being defined in its broad sense to include metallurgy and petroleum. Peru has produced petroleum since the early seventies, the first work being in the Zorritos field, in the Province of Tumbes, adjoining Ecuador. In the early nineties, the Negritos field, in the Department of Piura, came into prominence, and by 1905 had attained an annual production of 335,160 bbl. The early development of the field was under the general direction of the London & Pacific Petroleum Co., but it is now handled by the International Petroleum Co. In 1900 and 1901, the Lobitos field became the scene of marked activity. In 1905, its total production amounted to 75,000 bbl.; it has continued to increase as has Negritos. From 1897 to 1902, there was prospecting in the region of La Brieta (or Fernandez), on the Mancora River, about 25 to 30 km. from the coast. Small production of a heavy oil was obtained from three different sands. So far as the author knows, no work has been done in that locality since 1902. There are thus four distinct fields in the north endof the Peruvian coastal plain. The, remaining productive locality of Peru is the Pirin or Pusi field, at the northwest end of Lake Titicaca, Department of Puno, in southern Peru. The first prospecting near Pusi was done by Brown Brothers, of Los Angeles, Calif., who obtained modest production about 1906; according to reports, activities ceased about 1914 or 1915. The maximum annual production was obtained about 1908, estimated at 76,000 barrels. Peru possesses two distinct geographic provinces in which we may look for the development of a larger oil industry; namely, the coastal plain province, and the inter-Andean plains.

The relation between the chemical composition and the refractoriness of fire-brick has long attracted the attention of manufacturers of fire-brick and others interested in their use, yet but little systematic work has been done along this line, especially in the United States. Analyses of fire-brick have been quoted for years, but fire-tests of brick, except those of durability in practical use, have usually been lacking. Although many tests and analyses of foreign fire-brick have been published, only a few have appeared in the United States; and even in the foreign literature, the references and facts are more or less scattered. The most elaborate foreign paper on the subject is that by Dr. Jochum.' One of the earliest, and perhaps the most detailed piece of work in the United States, is that of F. Platt, which was done for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, in 1876.2 His investigation consisted of the analysis and heat-tests of 21 bricks, the testing being made in an experimental shaft-furnace at Har-risburg, Pa. All the bricks were more or less affected at the temperature reached, which was considerably higher than the melting-point of steel. The exact temperature at which individual bricks fused was not ascertained, hence the comparisons quoted in the paper are of value only for the bricks used in the test. The next comprehensive investigation, made by the New Jersey Geological Survey,³ deals chiefly with fire-clays; analyses and refractory tests having been made of 123 clays, kaolins, feldspars and fire-sands. In the past quarter century the seismograph has I played an increasingly important role in evaluating vibratory effects transmitted to adjacent communities by industrial blasting operations. In this period research has advanced through two major phases-from falling pin seismometers to three- component recording seismographs. The initial phase of this research is now regarded as the era of recording, during which the seismograph merely recorded occasional events. It has emerged from this stage into the era of control and analysis and in this later period has been recognized as a full-fledged industrial tool. Although the falling pin machines of earlier years indicated probable amplitudes of industrial blasting vibrations, they gave no reliable measure of such displacements, nor did they provide essential information concerning direction or frequency of motion.

At the Buffalo meeting in October, 1898 (Trans., xxviii., 865), our Secretary, Dr. Raymond, in speaking of the obstacles he had encountered in securing contributions to the Transactions from members in practice, said : " It is the disinclination of many members to communicate incomplete or partial or preliminary results. They are going to write, ' some day,' a thorough and monumental paper; and meanwhile they prefer to communicate nothing.... It is the difficulty to which I have just referred that I have encountered in a wide correspondence with members, undertaken for the purpose of securing contributions of fact and opinion concerning the special subject of this discussion.... Almost none of them seem to recognize the value of preliminary, incomplete and indecisive reports of practice, as laying the foundation for a thorough' inquiry." This remark was made in immediate reference to a discussion concerning blast-furnace tuyeres; but, notwithstanding this appeal from the Secretary, little has been recorded regarding the distribution, the penetration, and the pressure of the blast at the tuyeres and inside the iron blast-furnace. I am therefore encouraged to contribute the following incomplete and crude observations of the blast-pressure inside the hearth. At the suggestion of J. H. Frantz, the general manager of the Columbus Iron & Steel Go., a test was made at the East furnace of the company to determine whether there was any difference in blast-pressure at the different tuyeres. The apparatus used for this test was not sensitive enough to give accurate results. It consisted of a small pressure-gauge mounted on a 3/8-in. gas-pipe. A hollow plug, fitting into the peep-hole of the tuyere-cap, prevented the blast from blowing-out during the test. The test-pipe was held in place by means of the handle on the outer end.

WHEN I was an undergraduate at the Columbia School of Mines, the mining curriculum was subdivided into two major branches's known respectively as the Metallurgical and the Geological Options, which diverged rather widely as the course progressed. When I duly elected the Geological Option, I believed, I am sure, that this divergence would continue throughout the years. The facts have proved otherwise. The mining industry is a closely knit entity in which the search for its raw materials, called mining geology, cannot be separated from the conversion of these raw materials into marketable form, called metallurgy. The mining geologist searches for materials which the metallurgist can utilize, and only such; and whenever an advance in metallurgy opens the gates for new materials, the geologist's problem is correspondingly modified. No better instance of this relationship can be given than that seen in the Salt Lake region in recent years. Our mineral industry here is of long standing. The three principal tributary districts, Bingham, Park City and Tintic, were discovered in the 1860's and have been vigorously and intelligently developed for many decades. Their production has made the Salt Lake valley one of the world's great smelting centers. The maintenance of this industry has for years depended upon the continual development of new orebodies to take the place of those being extracted. Intensive exploration in the old districts has been supplemented by prospecting in outlying districts of lesser prominence. . Many new orebodies have been discovered, such as those of the Daly West, Silver King, and Judge mines in Park City, the Utah Apex in Bingham, and the Sioux, Colorado Chief Consolidated and Tintic Standard in Tintic. New mines in other districts have been discovered also, but without affecting the dominance of the three major districts. In all cases discoveries, to be of value, had to be of ore amenable to treatment in the available metallurgical plants. This meant that, for the most part, zincy ores, both oxide and sulfide, must remain untouched, and also that ores high in iron and ores high in silica had a fictitious value, either high or low, set by the balance of these

ENGINEERS, operators, miners, and others di-rectly interested in mining will readily agree that more of well-directed illumination in mines will result in a reduction of accidents and general im-provement in the working conditions, comfort, and effi-ciency of those employed underground. Progress has been made in the amount of illumination from individual lamps carried by miners. The candle, which a great many of us can remember as the general method of lighting, was replaced by the oil lamp or torch, later by a specially prepared oil known as "Sunshine," and eventually by the carbide cap lamp. The metal mines still present a field for progress from the standpoint of general illumination, particular-ly those mines having high stopes. Attention is being more and more focussed upon the advantages of im-proved lighting in mines, in order that the underground employee may benefit as the factory workers have al-ready done. The management is vitally interested in the morale of its employees, the reduction of costly accidents and increased production, all of which, judging by results in other industries, will be sub-stantially benefitted through the means of improved general illumination. From data available to the writer, 40 to 50 per cent of the accidents in the metal mines occur at the face; they may be due to roof falls, movement of loose ore, loading of cans, handling of tools, etc. Very probably a large proportion of these accidents may be attributed to lack of light. If sufficient illumination had been present the employee could have seen what was happen-ing and taken the proper precautions. The introduc-tion of better illumination means better visibility, de-crease in accidents, and increase in efficiency.
