Would it be possible for the author to enlarge on this very important matter of "cataclysmic types of failures? " J. J. Kanter.—Of course, it is always a delicate matter to discuss specific failures. I would prefer to keep the present discussion on fundamentals and principles. H. L. Burghof.*—Mr. Kanter, I should like to ask what you consider the responsibility of the designer in avoiding stress concentrations that would lead to these types of failures? J. J. Kanter.—lt was my feeling in looking over the papers of this symposium that they were significantly lacking in consideration of what happens to the metals when strained under conditions that lead to rupture. Often creep tests are run that produce only a fractional percentage of the deformation, in several thousand hours. That kind of information gives the designer no assurance whatever that cracks will not result in his structure at points where stress concentrations, and therefore deformation concentrations, exist. I think anyone in this day and age who presents a paper on creep should incorporate with those studies a thorough investigation of creep rupture if it is expected to make an impression upon the design engineer.

This paper discusses the results of a laboratory testing pro- gram to determine the validity of hydraulic fracturing stress measurements in salt. Tests were performed on 15 cm diameter samples loaded under hydrostatic stress conditions to determine the influence of time, confining pressure, flow rate, borehole diameter, and packers on breakdown pressure. Tests were also performed in a polyaxial loading frame to determine whether or not hydraulic fracturing could be used to measure non-hydrostatic stresses. The test results indicate that the breakdown pressure is not affected by time delays of up to 64 hours between the application of load and fracturing the rock. Breakdown pressures were found to fall short of predicted elastic values at higher confining pressures for the hydrostatic tests. The ratio of the horizontal stresses in non-hydrostatic tests had no effect on breakdown pressures. Flow rate and borehole diameter variations were found to have a marked effect on breakdown pressures. Shut-in pressure values, which are generally used as an indication of the minimum stress value, exceeded the applied minimum stresses by 10 to 60% depending on the method of determination used. The lack of a relationship between breakdown pressure and horizontal stress ratio may preclude hydraulic fracturing from being used in salt as it is conventionally applied in brittle rocks.

The method of seismic reflection prospecting has many times been compared to sound ranging, a process that became familiar to many during the World War. According to this very simple theory, the dynamite goes off and sends out a compression wave, which meets a reflecting horizon and returns to the surface, where it is recorded and the elapsed time of its travel in the earth accurately determined. Computations are then made on the general theory that the longer the elapsed time, the greater the depth of the reflecting bed. While this serves to give an idea of the fundamental basis of the process, it suggests a simplicity that does not exist in the life history of the various waves set up by a dynamite explosion in the earth. To begin with, a seismic wave in the earth does not obey the same simple laws of propagation that apply to a sound wave in the air. The property of strength in shear possessed by solids introduces a factor that sets such waves apart from the ordinary air waves. Also, the transmission charactcristics of the earth vary widely from place to place, and a fairly accurate knowledge of the space relationships of these variations is necessary if the final results are to be understood. The applicability of this earlier chart was limited by the fact that it was based on the work of Burke and Keyes² and Kvalnes and Gaddy3 whose experiments were conducted with pure methane, the adjustments suggested for natural gases of higher specific gravity were unsatisfactory except within limited ranges of temperatures and pressures, and precise interpolation was difficult. The extensive work of G. G. Brown, D. L. Katz and their associates on the heavier natural gases has provided better bases for the needed corrections, and the present charts. which are based largely on their work, are intended to simplify the computations involved. The design of the charts has been changed by plotting temperatures as a function of pressure and correction factor, on a semilogarithmic or "ratio" grid, which gives fairly even spacing of the graphs and simplifies interpolation. Charts have been prepared for natural gas with specific gravities of .60, .65, .70, .75 and .80. The standard computation for use in estimating the quantity of gas in a reservoir may be expressed as follows: _ PA X 520 X VR ZT where: Q is the volume of gas at 60°F and one atmosphere pressure PA is the absolute formation pressure in atmospheres

INTRODUCTION The Friedensville mine is situated in Upper Saucon Township, Le- high County, Pennsylvania, in the southern central part of the Allentown quadrangle of the United States Geological Survey, approximately 5 miles southeast of the City of Allentown and 4 miles south of the City of Bethlehem. Zinc was first discovered in the Friedensville area early in the 19th century and several mines were operating during the latter part of the century. Zinc oxide was produced in 1853 and zinc metal in 1859. All mining in the area ceased in 1893 chiefly because of an unfavorable economic situation caused by a severe ground water problem and competition from the higher grade ores in New Jersey. Property acquisition by the New Jersey Zinc Company began in 1899 and periodic exploratory drilling was carried on until 1940 when sufficient reserves were proved for development of a mine. Shaft sinking was undertaken in 1947 and, due to severe hydrologic conditions, was not completed until 1952. Production began in 1958 and today the mine is producing about 64,000 tons of zinc concentrate per annum. The concentrates are trucked to the Company's smelter at Palmerton, Pennsylvania, approximately 30 miles north of Friedensville. The mine also produces from its mill tailings industrial and agricultural grades of limestone for commercial markets.

IRON ore reserves of Lone Star Steel Co. cover 56,000 acres in the north basin of the East Texas geosynclinal area near Daingerfield. Ore is almost wholly restricted to the Weches formation of middle Eocene Age. Its resistance to erosion has created the hilly topography of the East Texas area. The ore deposits, in the upper portion of the hills, are usually overlain with residual sand and clay overburden less than 15 ft thick. The ore formation consists of inter- bedded shallow ocean sediments ranging from pure greensand to fine-grained sands and clays containing a maximum of 70 pct limonite, or siderite, and varying from 2 to 100 ft thick. The iron in this ore originated as iron silicate or greensand in the ocean sediments, and the ore mineral siderite was formed when meteoric waters redeposited the iron under reducing conditions as a carbonate. With weathering and progressive erosion much of this siderite was later oxidized and altered to limonite - yellow to dark brown hydrous iron oxides formed into nodules up to 18 in., embedded in a sandy clay and weathered greensand matrix. Beneath the water table the siderite zone consists of interbedded shale and greensands with thin ledges and nodules of siderite. Lone Star Steel Co. has proven a 75-year supply of ore, and exploration of reserves and acquisition of new property is not complete.

PRACTICAL experience has shown that at elevated temperatures solu-tions containing sodium hydroxide may attack stressed steel in a manner that cannot be explained in terms of ordinary corrosion. Because the ductility of the metal has been greatly reduced during the reaction, the entire phenomenon is usually called "embrittlement." Thus, after several years of operation caustic evaporators have been so badly embrittled that rivets could be cracked off with the blow of a hammer. Since fine intergranular cracks are almost always present in the zone of fracture, it has often been assumed that a process of selective corrosion in grain boundaries was responsible for the failure, although this has not been clearly proved experimentally. Concentrations of sodium hydroxide below those necessary for the uniform, rapid attack of the steel surface are reported to be most effective in producing embrittlement2,3. In the operation of steam boilers a similar type of failure has been found, mainly in riveted seams or other capillary spaces where the solu-tion may concentrate and where high stresses may also exist. It is believed that in such localized areas the dissolved solids may reach a value many times the few hundred parts per million prevalent in the body of the boiler. ANDREW FLETCHER, newly elected Treasurer and Director, has spent his entire mining career in the employ of the St. Joseph Lead Co. and brings to the Institute Board a career rich in financial experience and varied in interest and accomplishment. "Drew" Fletcher was born in New York City on Feb. 6, 1895. After graduating from the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale in 1916 as a mechanical engineer, he became a shipyard mechanic in Wilmington, Del. The next thirteen years saw. him gradually enlarging his responsibilities until he ultimately became the head of the W. & A. Fletcher Co., in Hoboken, N. J., ship repairers. In 1929 his program for merging the Fletcher plant with five other New York shipyards was finally consummated in the formation of the United Dry Docks, Inc., which subsequently was purchased by Bethlehem Steel, with the result that today the old Fletcher yard and organization has been expanded into one of the finest ship repair units in the United States.

IN this war as in no former one, the use of metals has been the major factor governing success. For building new plants, new transport facilities whether by land, sea, or air, for our mechanized army, and for nearly all weapons, iron and steel has provided the basic material. Being the world leader in iron and steel production in peacetime, we soon adapted plants to production for war. Starting with a production of 66,000,000 tons of steel ingots in 1940 from a rated capacity of 80,000,000 tons which only could be reached by straining every productive device available, our industry expanded to 86,000,000 tons in 1942, and ultimately to 96,000,000 tons. To do so required expansion of every unit operation including mining, rail and water transportation, blast-furnace and steelmaking facilities, and rolling mills. New plants not only had to be built in record time but more output for each operation was essential. This performance required skillful operation and engineering techniques and also a better understanding of the physics and chemistry underlying such complex operations as the working of a big blast furnace. A vastly increased pig iron production made possible the great output of steel by an industry that had depended on scrap for its basic raw material even though sufficient scrap was unavailable. This was done by conversion of pig iron in the Bessemer either into steel or into a low-carbon product that was subsequently used in place of scrap in the open¬hearth steel furnace. Furthermore, by duplexing from the open-hearth to the electric furnace, and the construction of many new electric furnaces, our output of electric-furnace alloy steel was greatly increased. Moreover, techniques were developed by which alloy steel could be made in the open hearth with the result that our production of alloy steel reached the fantastic figure of 15,000,000 tons a year.

There is an increase in production for the year of approximately 4½ million barrels. In November the average production indicated that during the year 1935 the total production would probably exceed 50 rnillion barrels. To maintain this production, only 106 wells were drilled during the year, mainly in South Sumatra.

A sampling technique has been developed for procuring a sample of sinter representative of the entire depth of the sintering bed. The sampling method involves the use of an open-bottom metal basket that rides on the grate of the sintering machine and when removed contains a sample of the sintered product. Additional data have been obtained to indicate that the tumbler test is a suitable means of measuring sinter strength.

It has been discovered that gold can be extracted from alkaline cyanide solution with primary, secondary, and tertiary amines by adding certain Lewis base modifiers, such as organic phosphorus oxides. Under these circumstances, gold can be extracted at about pH 10, commensurate with the pH of cyanide leach liquors. The selectivity of the amines and amine/modifier combinations for Au(CN)[2] over other metal-cyanide complexes is discussed. Potential applications for the solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions are also discussed.

Engineers and masters of enterprise are waking fast to the realization that there is something more in the relations of employer and employee than mechanical output, which can be measured mathematically, and that the human side of service must receive greater consideration for the future. So much has been said and written on this subject that it has passed into a truism. Should not the same element, long neglected, be considered as of even greater importance than questions of "administration and membership, in the plans of engineering societies? Should mutual service and interest end with mere technical output by members and the rendering of care and management by officers? The world is recognizing, as never before, obligations for service to fellowmen clue from all, high or low, in rank or wealth. Our technical societies, organized for professional protection and advancement, are, insensibly to themselves, almost without conscious intent, widening their field of service to members and dealing heartily with questions broader than technique. Those who are doing such service find unconsciously more and more satisfaction in work so rendered. The growth of knowledge that comes to subaltern engineers or veterans by converse and contact with their fellows, working along and versed in the same subjects, brings interest and friendship. In this way are built some of the warmest friendships of life, coming as incidental and pleasurable result of meetings undertaken for other purposes. The first production on the Island of Trinidad was discovered 29 years ago; 13,275 acres were proved for oil and gas to the end of 1937, and 145,076,700 bbl. was produced from 2661 wells, or 10,928 bbl per acre. The production of oil in 1936 was 13,237,030 bbl. and in 1937 a new peak of 15,498,350 bbl. was reached. During November 1937, the daily average production was 43,350 bbl., or 35 bbl. per well, while the maximum gas production was 45 million cubic feet daily. Two hundred fifty wells were completed during 1937 and 15 abandoned. At the end of last year, 800 wells had been temporarily shut down, 1235 were producing oil and gas, and 2 were producing gas only. Six hundred seventy-nine dry wells had been drilled to the end of 1937. At the end of November 1937, the following oil-producing methods were in use: 395 wells flowing, 491 pumping, 97 on air-gas lift and 252 wells miscellaneous. There were no flooding operations. The oil is produced from the Miocene and Eocene and is of both asphalt and paraffin base. The gas produced averaged approximately 1050 B.t.u. per cu. ft. with 0.8 gal. of gasoline per 1000 cubic feet.
