The following experience in rebuilding a furnace crucible while in blast may not be wholly uninteresting to some, notwithstanding its purely practical character. Few are aware of the frequent calls made on a furnace manager's skill and ingenuity, to meet the irregularities which present themselves with kaleidoscopic variations in the operations of furnaces. Unfortunately the methods pursued in overcoming these practical difficulties are too seldom recorded, and much valuable information is lost that could not fail to be of value to many, and to none more so than the educated technical manager, with a limited practical experience, who, without a literature or record of any kind to refer to, finds himself, in times of emergency, dependent and looking for assistance from those whom it is his province to instruct and direct. With positive data, however, that like difficulties have been successfully overcome, he can confidently resort to similar expedients, with such modification; as the circumstances may demand in his particular case, and pull through seeming impossibilities in the face of ignorant prejudice. The Quinnimont Furnace (60 x 15 feet) had been in operation but two months, when it became necessary to draw the tuyeres out a distance of 18 inches, in order to give them a resting-place; the brickwork under them being completely cut away, so that after each

Since the blast Fired August 15th, 1878, which was described by Mr. Clark," and up to November, 1881, we have fired three smaller blasts, one in the southwest corner of the quarry and two in the buttress of rock left standing by the first blast near the mouth of the main gangway. We intended to keep an exact account of the stone thrown down by each blast, but the large quantity required by the furnaces since the beginning of 1879, and the time taken up by more important matters, have caused this to he neglected, so that it is not possible to separate exactly the cost and quantity of stone obtained during this time by the old method from that furnished by the large blasts; yet as the latter quantity has been much greater than the former, some notion of the value of the large-blast plan may be reached by comparing the figures from September, 1878, to November, 1881, with those for times when the old system was exclusively used. Since 1878 wages have been raised, lowered, and again raised, and to get a year of sufficiently large production for fair comparison it is necessary to go back to that ending April, 1872, when wage? and supplies were different from present prices and from those of 1878,.

GRATON, Cambridge, Mass.-May I ask, in connection with one point in the summary, to what extent the author regards actinolite equivalent to tourmaline as an index of high-temperature and presumably magmatic conditions of deposition of the accompanying sulphides? W. E. GARY.-I merely advanced the idea that the mineral actinolite might have some such significance. In the copper deposit at Braden in South America, the ore occurs in an andesite breccia which is cemented by a matrix of sulphides, quartz, and tourmaline. Tourmaline is a high-temperature mineral, and when we find it associated with ores, these are regarded as having come from a volcanic or deep-seated source, hence a primary hypogenetic deposit. Thus we can count on greater continuation of the ore with depth than in some other kinds of deposit, and I thought that the actinolite, being also a high-temperature mineral, might have some such bearing in the case of Mount Morgan. I did not advance this idea as a final conclusion from a study of such phenomena, but thought that it might bear some discussion in view of the fact of the peculiar occurrence of this mineral in a notable orebody. It also occurs with the copper ores at Ducktown, Tenn., and in both cases may only be due to general regional metamorphism.

When lime and magnesia are used as fluxes in the smelting of titaniferous ores fluid, digestible slags low in iron oxide and high in titanium dioxide are produced. The mineral phases present in such slags are (Fe,Mg)O.ZTiOp, CaTiO3, and minor amounts of silicate glass (or its devitrification products). The flux additions are added to the ore in relative amounts to crystallize a ratio of (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 to CaTiO, of near the eutectic proportions of 60 pct (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 and 40 pct CaTiOl. FeO.TiOz (ilmenite) remains present in the slag until the FeO content is reduced to approximately 8 pct. Optimum slag composition is obtained by reducing the FeO content to between 2 and 6 pct. Continued reduction shifts the (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 to oxygen deficient structures classified as MgTi306 and MgTi2O.. Further reduction yields titanium oxycarbides and freezes the melts. The(Fe,Mg)0.2TiO2 structure shows a complete isomorphous replacement of iron by magnesium. It also forms a solid solution compound with as high as 12 mols of TiO2 under reducing conditions without the occurrence of rutile or reduced titanium oxides in the slag.

Griffith in an investigation of the Scranton mine cave problem several years ago; in the course of which we investigated rather carefully the bearing strength of various materials that might be utilized for, the support of over We found that there were no reliable data as to the resisting strength, for instance, of gob pillars or timber cogs or cribs, nor as to the amount of compression that might be expected under a given burden. We made a series of tests at the Fritz engineering laboratory of Lehigh University, from which we, reduced certain conclusions, subject, however, to further test before they could be definitely recommended. Onr study of the subject was later checked by a commission appointed by the Governor of the State of Pennsylvania, to investigate the same subject the subsidence of the surface, and the danger entailed thereby. The State, commission made a series of tests on a much more ambitious scale at Pittsburgh, in the laboratory of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and their tests agreed quite closely with those that Mr. Griffith and I had made. THE failure to detect any change in the thermal properties of cobalt at the Curie point would appear to indicate that the apparatus may have a limited sensitivity. The Curie temperature has been determined by direct methods to be 1121+3°CP and 1131°C.3 The specific heat has been determined many times'.' and weighted values are given in Table I. The allotropic transformations in iron and titanium, used by the authors to test the experiment method, involved a volume change of the order of 3 pct on going from the close-packed to the body-centered-cubic lattice. These energy changes are likely to be much larger than those involved in a diffusionless transformation from a hexagonal to a cubic-close-packed lattice. However, it has been pointed out that thermal observations are unreliable in the detection of phase changes when these are near a Curie point.' James 0. McCaldin and Pol Duwez (authors' reply)—The sensitivity of the present technique is limited to first-order transformations, so that gradual changes in specific heat, e.g., in the vicinity of Curie points, are not detected. Furthermore, the existence of first-order transformations with latent heats much smaller than those occurring in the known allotropic transformations of iron and titanium is, we agree, still pending.

At the Steptoe metallurgical plant, where ore of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. is beneficiated, a small copper-leaching annex has been in operation treating flue dust from roasting-furnace dust chambers, together with a siliceous oxidized ore. This leaching plant was designed to obviate smelting low-grade siliceous flue dust, which interfered with the operation of the reverberatories by forming a blanket on the charge. The major portion of the copper content of the flue dust accumulating in the upper chambers of the roaster flue, and at the stack, is water soluble, and also contains much free sulphuric acid and soluble sulphates. It was found that sufficient acid could be obtained by mixing this material with water to provide a lixiviant for leaching the siliceous copper ore mentioned. This was the sole source of the lixiviant used in the operation to be described. An analysis of the flue dust showed it to be composed as follows : Per Cent. The three principal mines from which the celebrated Salisbury iron ores are obtained are called respectively the "Old Hill," "Davis," and "Chatfield" ore beds, and are situated in the town of Salisbury, Litchfield County, Conn., on the eastern slope of the Tocconuc range of hills.* The Old Hill Ore Bed is a tract of land of 100 acres, originally granted by the General Court in October, 1731, to be laid out by Daniel Bissell of Windsor. It mas Boon after surveyed and located by Ezekiel Ashley and John Pell. The descendants of Ashley are still proprietors in the mine. The supply of ore has been very abundant, and for many years was easily obtained, but latterly the cost of raising has been greatly increased. Up to about 1840 the average yield was estimated to be about 4500 tons per annum. The production has gradually increased until the average yield at present is estimated at 15,000 tons annually. The largest production in any one ymr was about 20,000 tons. The proprietors of this mine were incorporated many years ago under the style of " The Salisbury Ore Bed Proprietors." The Davis Ore Bed, named after an early owner, was originally called Hendricks Ore Bed, and was owned before the organization of the town of Salisbury by Thomas Lamb, one of the first settlers

GEOLOGISTS and engineers working around a diamond drill rig have often had the opportunity to observe the magnetic attraction of drill rods pulled out of the hole for core removal. This is sometimes an amusing pastime, but this same magnetic force inadvertently applied to a compass needle can cause it to lose its polarity entirely or to become reverse polarized when placed in the immediate vicinity of stacked rods. The first recommendation, of course, would be to avoid the rods, but in surveying an operating drillhole this is not always possible; therefore steps must be taken to neutralize the magnetic effect of the drill rods. Early in the summer of 1949 the geological department of the New Jersey Zinc Co. undertook at Franklin, N. J., an extensive program of surveying the course of deep diamond drillholes. The majority of the holes were surveyed while in the process of being drilled, and considerable difficulty was encountered. A pattern for the deviation of drillholes had been established for the district from surveys in holes from which the drill rig had been removed. It was observed that a certain operating deep drill- hole being surveyed did not fit this pattern. In the resulting confusion of repeated surveys and cementing a plug for wedging operations, the lower 1800 ft of the hole was lost. Because of this incident studies were initiated to determine the source of the difficulties and to develop safeguards against recurrence of faulty surveys.

GEO. F. COMSTOCK,* Niagara Falls, N. Y. (written discussion?).-In this exposition of experimental data, the author infers, indirectly at least, that by the Charpy test information was obtained that led to the improve-ment of certain ordnance parts and that this improvement could not have been attained without the Charpy test. On examination of the data, however, it appears that the important point of the whole matter was that while the material had been accepted from the results of longitudinal tensile tests, it was really transverse ductility that was desired. The writer has no desire to attempt to detract from the value of the paper or to discredit the Charpy test in any way, but he would like to ask the author if he will not give more clearly his reasons for preferring the Charpy impact test for investigational and control work of this kind, over the more usual tensile test made in a transverse direction. The tensile test pieces are more cheaply made than the square notched impact bars; and from the former the limit of elasticity and the ultimate strength as well as, the ductility are obtained, while in the Charpy test only one property is measured. It does not seem that the author has shown a sufficient reason for favoring the latter test, when both it and the trans-verse tensile test served his purpose equally well in indicating the proper metal and treatment required for his special forging, and it is hoped that this reason will be given more clearly as a matter of useful general information.

Now that low-carbon steel is manufactured successfully in large quantities by the Bessemer process, and threatens to displace wroughtiron for nearly all purposes, it becomes interesting to find how its Specific gravity compares with that of wrought-iron. The general name "steel" is retained in this paper to designate that metal made by the Bessemer process, which might be more properly called " ingot iron." But the former name seems to be quite firmly established in the iron trade. This steel offers many inducements to the manufacturer of architectural iron, by reason of its hornogencity, and the large masses in which it may be readily moulded. The steel from which these determinations have been made, was produced in four-ton heats and cast into ingots of about 3100 Ibs. weight, having an average section 14'' by 14". These ingots were rolled in a blooming-mill to a section about 24" by 14", cut into slabs and rolled in a plate-mill to a plate .065" to .165" thick, and about 1411 in width. The specific gravity was obtained from pieces of this plate. The metal showed by analysis .10 to .12 per cent. carbon,.33 to .45 manganese,.060 to .072 sulphur,.075 to .082 phosphorus, and .010 silicon. The samples were not annealed, but were brought to a bright surface with a file. All figures given are averages of not less than three determinations on separate pieces from the same plate. The variation in the figures from which the averages were made in no case exceeded .015.

HISTORY OF ASHIO SMELTER The Ashio copper mine, which formed the main part of Furukawa mining industry, is located inland of Kanto area, and is known as the oldest copper mine of Japan. The mining started even since 1610, and Mr. Furukawa began management in 1877. Afterwards, within a short period, the mine became to have the highest productivity in the Far East. The total quantity of mined copper reached approximately more than 800 thousand tons. The mother rock of the ore deposit in Ashio was rhyolite, and was formed of sissurefulling and irregular clod that was called Kajika deposit. The lode was nzrrow of 6 to 7cm. The mineral was formed mainly of chalcopyrite, including also pyrite, pyrrhotite, and arsenopyrite that were not favorable. After the founding of the copper mine, the Ashio smelter started the operation of Mabuki process as the beginning in 1611, and subsequently adopted the processes of the blast furnace, reverberatory furnace, and flash smelting furnace of the present use. As indicated above, the copper ore of Ashio mine included arsenic. For the purpose to remove it, the operation of the arsenic trioxide production using MacDougall's multiple hearth roaster was started in 1918, and it maintained the status of having the most qualified technique within the country. However, as the completeness in the disposition of anti-pollution and safety had been requested in those years, we studied and developed a unique equipment in 1970. It excludes the heavy metals especially arsenic and copper from the waste water of sulfuric acid process of Flash Smelter's exhaust gas.

A knowledge of rock characteristics forms the foundation for the application of rock mechanics to engineering works. Hence, there has been an increased interest in the determination and proper utilization of rock properties data. Most numerical values quoted for rock properties are obtained from arbitrary tests and are not necessarily indicative of any intrinsic rock characteristics. Recent attempts to correlate these properties by statistical methods have attracted considerable attention, in the hope that these might give some clue to the fundamental properties. To date, correlation and regression techniques have been employed for this purpose. The use of statistics has also been deemed appropriate because of inhomogeneity and anisotropy in rocks. The problems have been further compounded by the lack of standardized methods of measuring rock properties. The various ASTM committees are still deliberating on these matters, but recommendations should be forthcoming in the near future. As more reliable data become available, the ability of geoscientists to find more meaningful relationships between rock properties will be greatly enhanced. The objective of this paper is to outline another statistical technique which might be useful in providing an insight into the relationships that exist between rock properties. This method does not attempt to predict rock characteristics, but rather compares the similarity or dissimilarity between properties. This enables rock properties to be classified into groups with similar intrinsic characteristics. The technique described is one form of factor analysis. It allows the results obtained to be depicted geometrically, so as to make ready visual examination possible.

The geologic factor of greatest significance in rock mechanics and rock engineering is considered to be the geologic structure represented by joints, faults, and other planes of weakness. This geologic structure differentiates between the rock element and the rock system composed of these elements. Only during the last decade has the difference of the technological properties of element and system been recognized but this appears to be more in theory than in engineering practice. If rock mechanics is to achieve real significance in engineering practice, it has to provide methods of analysis which are realistic compromises between the best representation of the actual conditions and pragmatic engineering. The rock mechanics practitioner has to face the fact that many geological engineering and rock mechanics problems may be too complex to allow rigorous analysis but at the same time are deemed satisfactory for the construction of major structures. Ultimately, the geotechnical engineer or the engineering geologist has to express the effect of geologic factors in quantitative, even if approximate, terms and provide numerical data on strength and deformability of rock systems to be utilized in construction. Qualitative evaluations, quantitative descriptions of geologic features as such, and comparisons of specific test results are always of interest but may not suffice as basis for engineering decisions and designs. The present efforts of the rock mechanics group at the Karlsruhe University, Federal Republic of Germany, are based on a systematic combination of geomechanical models and numerical analyses based on the finite element approach. I AM very much impressed by this manifestation of international brotherhood; the mining engineers on both sides of the ocean have similar subjects to deal with, meet with the same difficulties, expose themselves sometimes to similar dangers; they are like companions in arms in the battle fought by mankind in order to subjugate the natural forces and to draw profit therefrom. There is no other field where this fraternity must manifest itself more actively than in the studies pursued with a view to improving the safety of mines and to rendering impossible in the future these mining disasters, which every year claim hundreds of victims. These are very difficult problems, the solution of which requires numerous and laborious experiments accompanied by very arduous scientific investigations; it is extremely desirable that the various mining countries, which have undertaken to solve these difficult problems, should unite their efforts in order to succeed as soon as possible and as well as possible. This idea has been fully grasped by your Bureau of Mines, which has brought me to Pittsburg; the daily exchange of views with the distinguished chief of-the mine investigation division, George S. Rice, and with his excellent collaborators, the comparison of the results obtained at Lievin and Bruceton, the checking of these results by means of new tests, the profound study of the measurements, diagrams, measuring and laboratory apparatus, the cooperative investigation of new apparatus, or the preparation of new investigations, are, I hope, of such a nature as to bring about great progress. I think that it will be interesting to you to know what has been done in France along this line.
