THIS year the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers celebrates its seventy-fifth anniversary as well as the same anniversary of iron and steel in this country as we now know it. The society's span of life comprehends the very beginning and gradual development of the present-day iron and steel industry and its TRANSACTIONS are rich with the trials and achievements of the pioneers in this field. It is difficult to believe that in the first year of the Institute's existence there was produced in this country only 84,000 net tons of ingots, of which only 2000 tons was made by the open-hearth process; that the bessemer process was just barely beginning; that charcoal and anthracite were virtually the only blast-furnace fuels; that Mesabi ores had not been used in blast furnaces, and such pig iron as was then made was produced at a number of small units, each adjacent to its ore and fuel supply. The growth from 84,000 net tons production of steel ingots to 95,500,000 tons in 1945 eloquently tells the story of America's industrial growth.

Discussion of the paper of CHARLES H. MACDOWELL, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 103 to 114. GEORGE S. RICE, Pittsburgh, Pa.-I am especially interested in the mining side of this important question. In 1911, when in Europe investigating mining matters, giving special attention to subsidence clue to mining, for there is a very big problem of that kind, as many of you know, in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, I visited Stassfurt, which is one of the chief centers of potash mining, and which was pointed out as the place to see surface subsidence. We found the town much askewsome of the streets having sunk from 15 to 30 ft., leaving many ancient buildings pitching at various angles. One old church, 500 or 600 years old, has been sunk about 20 ft., cracking it badly. I understand that this condition came about because in early mining clays they were careless about leaving proper supports and used no filling or packing. The Stassfurt mines work along a buried anticline the sides of which pitch at 45° on the average. Through this careless mining they had a break of the hanging wall which let in water from the overlying marls and sands. The water rapidly dissolved the salts in the pillars, and spreading through the entire chain of mines, caused their complete loss, with serious trouble for the old city. They had to start new mines some distance away, and take care to prevent roof caves. The packing system is of interest. They were driving large rooms into the rock-salt foot wall and using the rock salt as dry filling. The application of hydraulic filling, using a saturated solution, was under contemplation at some plant nearby. Whether 6r not the plan was carried out I do not know. I was reminded of the plan by Mr. MacDowell's remarking on the use of a saturated salt solution in the core drilling. His reference to the apparent breakdown of the potash syndicate raises an interesting question. We have had the German system of syndicates pointed out as perhaps one means of solving our troubles in the soft-coal mining industry due to overproduction. It seems to have worked out admirably in the case of the Westphalian coal-mining syndicate and also in the syndicate of Upper Silesia; but apparently the syndicate plan did not work in the potash industry. .

During July and August, 1931, the Bloomington Limestone Co., at Bloomington, Ind., ran a single wire saw on ledge No. 2 at Maple Hill quarry. The ledge was hard rock, much harder than the average Indiana limestone. It was opened at two ends for a depth of about 20 ft., leaving a 130-ft. section between. During the tests 21 cuts were made in this ledge, to an average depth of 10.42 ft., for a total effective cutting area of 28,445 sq. ft. The actual area sawed was about 20 per cent higher, as we did not level down in the center, preferring to cut deeper on the ends. The various cuts were carefully logged, and the results plotted. A study of these results is interesting, as it enables a forecast of probable future costs to be made, and also because it points out the limitations of wire saws, and the lines development should logically take. Some of the inferences to be drawn are discussed below. Best Length of Cut.—No trouble was due to length of cut, except that we could not easily level down a long cut, and it is probable that longer cuts, say up to 200 ft., can be made. Obviously, longer cuts will result in a higher sawing rate in square feet per hour if they do not cause stoppages. Working Higher Ledges.—The cuts averaged 10.42 ft. high by 130 ft. long. A study of several logs indicated that during only about 15 per cent of the cutting time was the saw cutting to its full efficiency; that is, during about 85 per cent of the time the saw was bedding in at the ends and not cutting well in the center, or the ends were below the floor line and only part of the wire was doing effective cutting. This does not mean that the wire was cutting to only 15 per cent of its capacity, but it means that during about 85 per cent of the time part of the cutting was being wasted. If higher ledges had been worked, the wire would have cut to its full efficiency a large part of the time, as it would have had a greater distance to saw after it had bedded in to the ledge before the ends went down below the floor level. The exact saving to be expected cannot be calculated, but it would be large if really high cuts were made.

years ago upon the effect of having the rails always rolled in the same direction, and also of having them rolled backwards and forwards, and showed that under the latter course there were of necesshy weak spots somewhere near the centre of the rail, yet in all this discussion the methods of rolling have been passed by almost in silence. Mr.. Sandberg in his paper mentions the idea of using a regietering dynamometer attached to the punching machines, and of det.erminit~g the quality of the metal by the resistance which is shown. I think the' first idea of this kind was published by Professor Langley, then of Pittsburgh, who, while making some investigations for Mesrs. Miller, Metcalf and Parkin, announceti as tile result of a series of dynamometric experiments that abrasive resistance was the term which should be wed in regard to steels of different wearing qualities. I have had extremely delicate dynamometers attached to the instruments of precision with which I am making the iuvestigation on the fatigue of metals, and hope soon to communicate the results of the iovegtigation- made with them to the Institute. I wish again to call attention to the fact that we are wing the words " hardener " and " hardness " without any real idea of the meaning of these words. When we say hard and soft, as we have hen constantly doing during this discussion, is it quite sure that every one has exactly the same meaning in his mind ? Certainly, when hard is used in distinction from soft*, we mean not the capacity of wear, but the capacity of resistance to peuetration, to fracture, or some other resistance, and do not always meau the capacity of resistance to abrasion or crushing, which the discussion would sometimes seem to imply were the only qualitiw requisite to constitute a god rail. ONE of the outstanding achievements in connection with this country's war efforts has been the ability of our mining industry to supply from domestic sources many of the minerals of strategic importance that formerly were obtained principally from abroad. In order to meet the war-born demands for these scarce minerals, it has frequently been necessary to develop special methods for treating ores and waste products hitherto considered too low-grade to be workable; and to improve the efficiency of older beneficiation processes. Important in this respect have been the recent technological advances in the field of froth flotation of nonsulphide minerals. Because of the refractory nature of many of these domestic ores, and, in many cases, the limited available technical data regarding their treatment, much research work has been necessary. The following examples describe the procedures and reagents used, and the results obtained, in certain laboratory flotation investigations conducted by American Cyanamid Company's engineers at the Cyanamid Ore Dressing Laboratory on ores containing such minerals as scheelite, manganese oxides and carbonate, ilmenite, brookite, kyanite, garnet, spodumene, mica, feldspar, celestite, fluorite, chromite, corundum, and cassiterite. In presenting these data, we wish to point out that many of the minerals listed have previously been tested, and their amenability to flotation reported, by other investigators-notably those of the United States Bureau of Mines. In some instances the procedures and reagents used in the treatment of some of the following described ores follow rather well-established lines, and with one or two exceptions, the reagents used were well known. However, many of the ores tested did not respond well to simple conventional procedures and it was necessary to adopt special methods of conditioning and desliming, reversal of the usual order of floatability of some of the minerals, multiple cleaning, etc., in order to secure separations. Except where otherwise noted, all numbered and trade-marked reagents mentioned in this paper are marketed by the American Cyanamid Co. or the American Cyanamid and Chemical Corporation. TUNGSTEN ORES Tungsten minerals, vitally important in the war industries of the United States, rank high in the list of those we formerly had to import in order to supply our needs. Most of our domestic ores of tungsten contain scheelite as the valuable mineral. Today there are in the neighborhood of twelve tungsten operations in this country where flotation is used as the main or accessory form of benefication. It has, of course, been known for some time that scheelite and other tungsten minerals respond to treatment by flotation.

AMONG the half-dozen major research search projects now being conducted at the Michigan College of Minim, and Technology under the terms of an FERA grant, an important one relates to the use of suspensions in ore dressing. The study has resulted from the constantly widening industrial use of metals and minerals. The modest demands of a few decades ago for these minerals could be easily met from richer deposits. Now, at least in some localities, the richer deposits are nearing exhaustion. Furthermore, advances in the industrial arts and the competition of other minerals and metals have changed the specifications of materials needed by the manufacturers. IN THE present day manufacture of glass nearly pure quartz sands are used almost exclusively as the source of the silica, which is the major constituent of all common varieties of glass. Ordinary soda-lime, such as bottle, common tableware, plate, and window glasses, contain from 65 to 75 per cent. of silica. OCCURRENCE Glass sands occur in nature either in the form of loose, unconsolidated sediments or in deposits in which the individual grains have been more or less thoroughly bound together by some cementing agent so as to form sandstones. While deposits of sand and sandstones occur both widely and abundantly distributed, deposits that are sufficiently free from other constituents than quartz grains, so that they can be employed in the manufacture of the better grades of glass, are, comparatively speaking, of rare occurrence. The major portion of the glass sand produced in the United States comes from sandstones. In order to be suitable for glass sand, they should be rather friable. The rock should break down readily along the cementing material between the grains and should not break across the grains rather than along the bond. Some of the sandstones used are so friable that only light shots of slow-burning dynamite are necessary to disintegrate them sufficiently for hydraulic mining, while others have to be passed through crushers in order to disintegrate the rock into its individual grains.

AFTER several years study, the Universal Atlas Cement Co. decided to rebuild its plant at Leeds, Alabama. The entire old plant, which was to operate during the new construction, was then to be scrapped with the exception of two kilns. The quarry was to be mechanized, new and larger kilns installed, with the most modern type of equipment all through the plant. Raw grinding operations at all of the Universal Atlas plants were dry. However, the dust hazard of this operation and the growing emphasis on occupational diseases made wet grinding attractive. Coal at Leeds is cheap, so that a slightly higher coal practice was unimportant. Power was cheap, so that waste-heat boilers were not desirable. Since new kilns were to be installed, these could be made long enough to make filters unnecessary. Wet raw grinding could be either the old practice of open-circuit compartment mills or closed-circuit grinding in accordance with metal-lurgical practice. The latter saved power and steel wear and saved initial investment. This had been demonstrated in cement plants. Also, the elimination of tramp oversize was a most important advantage. Ease of chemical control was another factor. Blending in the thickener, with elimination of slurry mixers had been found practicable. Therefore, if wet raw grinding were used at all, the advantages were clearly in favor of closed-circuit grinding. Detailed layouts of the most modern possible closed-circuit dry-grinding plant and of a closed-circuit wet-grinding plant were prepared, and careful estimates were made of initial invest-ment and operating costs. Full consideration of all the factors involved resulted in a decision to install wet closed-circuit grinding.

Would you give us a short biographical sketch including your birthplace, education and current activities? I was born Jan. 16, 1920 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and lived there the first 22 years of my life. I also spent quite a bit of time on a farm about fifty miles north of Minneapolis owned by relatives. During the Depression, we lived off of ten cows and about fifty chickens. I'm a full-blooded Swede all along the line, and I'll be the last one in my family since my wife is not of Swedish descent. I attended Macalester College, a small school in St. Paul, to study for the ministry originally. However I soon realized that I really didn't have the talents for the ministry and I could probably do as much or more in a field where I did have some talent.

Flame fusion growth of strontium titanate crystals was undertaken to obtain large transparent crystals on which physical data could be gathered. The fact that strontium titanate is a cubic crystal and probably has a high index of refraction indicated that it might be useful in optics. No large boules* of strontium titanate had been synthesized previously, and none have been found as natural occurrences. The flame fusion process, invented by Verneuil in 1904, was first applied to grow large crystals of ruby and has since been used extensively to grow crystals of corundum and spinel on a commercial scale. Only during the past nine years has this technique been applied to the growth of large single crystals of other high melting compounds such as rutile, mullite and ferrites.

NOTE ON HAALCK'S FORMULA QUANTITATIVE interpretation of magnetic anomalies is admittedly a difficult process. Few authors have attempted a general approach to this problem. A [ ] number of publications can be found widely scattered through scientific periodicals, which present particular solutions obtained by the introduction of simplifying assumptions, such as the reduction to an equivalent magnet or pole, or the hypothesis of a very thin vein. The practical applications of these solutions are necessarily very restricted though they have given satisfactory results in isolated cases. Probably the most widely known equation of this type was given by Haalck.l His classic work contains curves calculated for typical conditions, and has now become a standard reference. However, a close scrutiny of Haalck's derivation reveals that, aside from the hypothesis of a thin vein, it rests on the

The presence of geothite in a hematite ore has been shown to strongly affect the time of heating to the firing temperature. The investigation of spalling of single pellets and of packed beds has enabled free water and goethite spalling to be identified as separate phenomena. In addition, it has been shown that even for an 18-in. deep bed of green balls, the free water and goethite drying periods can be considered separately. Based on this observation, a method of predicting production rate and hood temperature profile is presented. The method required knowledge of the ore goethite content, ore grind, and the green pellet bulk density. Laboratory results were found to be in good agreement with actual plant practice and have led to improved process performance.

The forty-fifth meeting of the Boston Section was held, at the Engineers' Club, on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 1917. Mr. F. C. Carstarphen, tramway engineer of the American Steel and Wire Co., was the guest of the evening. After dinner, Mr. Carstarphen gave a most interesting illustrated talk on the subject of aerial tramways. The views-showed the various forms of aerial tramways and three' unique installations, one carrying 285 tons of coal an hour, undoubtedly the maximum quantity transported by any tramway up to this time. The second installation is that of a lumber-carrying tramway, 5 miles long, operating in California. The last views illustrated a 13 ½ -mile tramway for carrying salt over the

Selective desliming holds much promise for upgrading low-grade, finely disseminated iron ores that are not readily amenable to conventional flotation. The process is extremely sensitive to the presence of calcium and magnesium ions that are in process water or are released by constituent minerals. The effects of these two alkaline earth ions on quartz were compared through streaming potential measurements, flocculation and cationic flotation tests, abstraction tests and scanning electron microscope studies. Calcium ion, adsorbed as CaOH+, and magnesium ion, attached by heterocoagulation as Mg(OH)2 precipitate, were responsible for the flocculation of quartz suspension and for the depression in cationic flotation of silica in alkaline pulp solutions. Magnesium hydroxide coating could be removed, similarly to adsorbed calcium ion, by complexation with EDTA and polyphosphates.

To assist the mining industry in attacking problems of water control, the U. S. Geological Survey has begun a program of research in mining hydrology. In certain fundamental respects water control is similar to development of water supplies from wells or to the drainage of agricultural lands, as many of the tools developed in recent years for quantitative ground-water problems are applicable, with modification, to mine-water problems. In 1952 a 30-day pumping test conducted jointly by the Eureka Corp. Ltd. and the Defense Minerals Exploration Agency provided an opportunity to gain knowledge concerning water movements around a flooded mine shaft. The methods of analyzing the data may be used as a guide for the evaluation of similar problems elsewhere.

INTRODUCTION THE literature of geophysics as applied to the discovery of mineral deposits has been very extensive during the past few years, but there seem to be few references to the use of the method of least squares for obtaining better interpretations of the observed data .2 There seems to be a general reluctance among geologists and. engineers to acquire the technique of least squares, in spite of the fact that a thorough knowledge of the theory is not necessary for the use of the method.
