Recognizing the fact that the problems of the committee named by the Board to prepare the "official ticket" for officers and Directors of the Institute are various and difficult; and desiring to assist this committee by setting forth some of the principles that should guide the committee and some of the qualifications that should be required of candidates, the following instructions are formulated and the Secretary is directed to publish them in MINING AND METALLURGY concurrently with the publication of the names of each newly appointed Nominating Committee and to send a copy to each member of the, Committee.

Rock-mass fracturing was measured on oriented drill core and along scanlines in three mines extracting mineralized porphyry deposits. Fracture families identified in the core were consistent with those found along scanlines, but fracture frequency in the core was twice that measured along scanlines. The excess fractures, which occur within 45º of a right angle to the core, apparently are produced during drilling, which implies that fracture spacing in drill core is an ambiguous quantity dependent on the drilling procedures, on the orientation and cohesion of the planes of weakness, and on the actual fractures present in the rock mass.

Deposits of cadmia, or impure oxide of zinc, are of common occurrence in the upper parts of blast furnaces using ores containing zinc, and were very common in the charcoal furnaces of Virginia working the brown hematite ores found near the Cadent black slate. A little more than a year and a half ago construction started on Canada's largest initial milling plant. Today the zinc concentrating plant 7 miles north of Barraute sits on ground that once was forest and clay flats. The plant is part of Barvue Mines Ltd. zinc-silver operation. Employees of the plant live in the model community of Barvue, built like the plant in record time. About 5000 tons of ore are handled by the plant daily, with an output of 200 tons of zinc concentrate. Management hopes to raise capacity of the $8 million plant to 6000 tons.

At the present time, the mine-owner has a number of patent crushers to choose from, when contemplating the erection of a mill; and a number of new ones are yearly brought to notice. We all know that the stamp-mill is the old standard; but several of the patent crushers, especially of the roller-type, are not without their merits. Having had a working experience, extending over a period of four years, with the " Bryan roller quartz-mill," working alongside of stamp-batteries, I take pleasure in giving to the members of the Institute the benefit of my experience with this mill.*

This paper outlines the achievements to date at the British Columbia mine of Kaiser Resources Ltd. Almost one million raw short tons (855,000 metric tonnes) are now produced per year from a single monitor operation working 15 short shifts per week. Progress has been made in reducing the angle at which coal will flow in flumes by modifying the shape and the plastic linings. Improvements have been made in transporting coal from heading machines, and in the design of the present and future coal: water circuits. The development of hydraulic mining is still young and many improvements are being made.

Results of large-scale mining experimentation carried on in Stage II of the Anvil Points Oil Shale Research Program, Rifle, Colo., are reported. After a new adit was excavated, over 500,000 tons of oil shale was extracted during a 13-month period by a modified room and pillar method. Experiments in drilling and blasting headings, benches, and crosscuts are reported. Roof-bolting procedures, loading and hauling, and ventilation design are discussed. Results of the extensive investigations carried out by the cooperative industry group and earlier work by the U.S. Bureau of Mines indicate that mining oil shale is technologically feasible.

THE Juniper Prospect is in Carleton County, N. B., at approximately 46º 31' north latitude, 67º 20' west longitude. During the summer of 1955 an area in west-central New Brunswick was selected for aerial electromagnetic prospecting with American Metal Co.'s helicopter-mounted equipment. Generalized, small-scale government geologic maps had suggested that this area was located along the western border of the northeast-trending granitic backbone of northwestern New Brunswick and might be underlain by the Ordovician-Silurian sediments and volcanics that are the host rocks for the recently discovered sulfide deposits of the Bathurst-Newcastle district.

The ElectroSlurry™ electrowinning concept has been incorporated into a process flowsheet for recovering copper from smelter flue dusts. The process has averaged 96% recovery of the copper as high-grade electrowon cathode, while at the same time removing a majority of the impurities that degrade drawn copper as a result of recycling flue dust and liberator cathodes. The dust is processed through several stages consisting of leaching, copper precipitation, ElectroSlurry electrowinning, and waste liquor treatment. The process may be integrated into a smelter operation and become an effective and feasible means of maintaining good product purity.

This paper outlines research conducted by the US Geological Survey on the geophysical signatures of chromite. Results of the chromite study highlight the importance of a laboratory research Phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on a new commodity; a realistic ore deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; and indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

MINE operators have a choice of several classifications of mechanical loaders. Within each classification there are many types and makes available. Table I lists loaders on which manufacturing data as to operating characteristics are available. This paper discusses the conditions met in a mine as they affect these characteristics. It is assumed that management will provide satisfactory engineering, supervision, power, maintenance, loader service within a concentration of workings, and a balanced working cycle served by balanced production equipment. THE Tracy mine is within the corporate limits of Negaunee, Mich. The tract of land comprising the Tracy group lies on the east end of the Marquette Iron Range between adjoining mined-out properties on the north and south. Since acquiring the Tracy lands in 1921, Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. has completed about 115,- 000 ft of surface diamond drilling, partially outlining five orebodies. Now that mining has started, one or more underground drills are in constant operation to obtain information that will aid mine development planning. Some 20,000 ft of underground drilling have been completed to date.

The following is a case study illustrating the use of thin sections and polished sections of crude ore to predict metallurgical response. By examining polished sections of the metallurgical products, the textural and mineralogical reasons for unsatisfactory separation can be explained. An area of oxidized Negaunee Iron-Formation located south of Negaunee, Michigan, in the Marquette Iron Range, has been considered for roast reduction-magnetic separation. Preliminary metallurgical studies and subsequent pilot plant testing produced varied results.
