The growing popularity in the United States of the vertical-flue even was emphasized when in 1905 the United States Steel Corp. chose the Koppers oven as the type which best suited their requirements. Heinrich Koppers was born on November 23. 1872. at a small farm in Walbeck near Geldern on the lower Rhine. When young Koppers was eight years old, however the family moved away from the farm to the industrial city of Bochum in the Ruhr. Here Koppers attended public school and subsequently served an apprenticeship to a tinsmith before taking a job as a lathe operator with a local steel company. He had ambitions to be much more than a machinist, however, and used his week-ends and evenings to improve his theoretical background by taking courses at a vocational-training school in Bochum. After winning the highest honor the school could bestow (the silver Staats-medaille), Koppers went on to continue his education at the Rheinisch-Westfalische Hüttenschule in Duisberg. One of his teachers there, Fritz Wüst who later became a professor at the Technische Hochschule at Aachen, recognizing Koppers' unusual abilities, predicted for him a great future. In 1894 Heinrich Koppers joined the firm of Dr. C. Otto and Co. in Dahlhausen, and in 1899 while superintendent of the Mathias Stinnes mine he built his first battery of ovens for Hugo Stinnes, the German industrialist. Two years later he started his own organization, and in 1902 he made Essen his headquarters. It was to Essen that a group of engineers from the United States Steel Corp. went in 1906 with an invitation to Koppers to design and supervise the construction of four batteries of ovens at the Joliet works of the Illinois Steel Co. Each battery was to consist of 70 ovens. Arriving in the United States in 1907, Koppers established a branch of his firm in Joliet, and construction began. The first battery was fired on July 27, 1908. Rugged and simple, these ovens incorporated basic design features which were to make the Koppers oven and its future modifications the choice of a very large segment of the by-product coking industry of America. The 280 ovens at Joliet were 35 ft long, 8 ¾ ft in height, and tapered from 21 to 17 in. The total daily capacity of the four batteries was 2240 tons of coke. The ovens were of the new cross-regenerative type; that is, instead of longitudinal regenerators serving an entire battery, as in the older Koppers ovens, cross regenerators for each separate oven were employed. Fuel gas was supplied from the side of the battery through ducts in the brickwork known as gun flues, which reached to the center of the battery under the vertical heating-flues. Removable, ceramic gas-nozzles fitted at the top of each gun flue helped to insure good control over the distribution of the fuel gas, and uniform heating conditions were also promoted by regulating the air supply to, and the suction in, each heating flue. A different refractory w& used for each battery. One was built of American silica brick, one of American quartzite, and two of imported German quartzite. The installation at Joliet proved to be very successful, and in 1911, 490 additional' Koppers ovens were built for the Illinois Steel Co. at the great new steelworks at Gary, Ind. By 1912 the H. Koppers Co. had established its headquarters in Chicago and was rapidly extending its business to include construction for such iron and steel companies as the Woodward Iron Co. at Woodward, Ma. (80 ovens in 1912); the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Rail- road Co. at Fairfield, Ala. (280 ovens in 1912); the Inland Steel Co. at Indiana Harbor, Ind. (86 ovens during 1913 and 1914) ; and the Republic Iron and Steel Co. at Youngstown, Ohio (68 ovens in 1913). In 1914 a group of men in Pittsburgh bought a major shareholding in the H. Koppers Co., and moved the headquarters of the organization from Chicago to their own city. In recent years interest has been aroused in flotation rate studies both from a technical and a more practical aspect. With increasing fineness of grind becoming a necessity in treatment of low grade ores, differences in flotation rates of various size ranges will assume importance in the evaluation of overall recovery results. Secondary treated sewage effluent was substituted for normal process water in laboratory tests simulating froth flotation recovery of copper and molybdenum sulfides. Sewage effluent caused significant detrimental response in the flotation process. First, a voluminous, uncontrollable froth was generated, even in the absence of a frothing agent, that has little mineral carrying ability. Second, sewage effluent caused a small loss in copper recovery and a large loss in molybdenum recovery. The detrimental effects of sewage effluent on flotation were partially overcome by tertiary treatment of the effluent by activated carbon adsorption and anion exchange. The frothing problem was significantly reduced after treating the sewage effluent by foam fractionation. Dilution of the effluent with normal process water resulted in a significant improvement in metal recovery. In addition, the large loss in molybdenum recovery was overcome by using a secondary collector in a combination reagent schedule. However, the secondary collector caused an appreciable loss in copper recovery.

AMONG the most notable of Canada's many contributions to the personnel of the mining industry in the United States is J. B. Morrow, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, April 9, 1886. Soon after completing his schooling at Dalhousie University in 1906 he emigrated to Arizona and Kew Mexico, via Cobalt and Larder Lake, Ontario. After preliminary experience in sampling and mucking he was employed by the Phelps Dodge Corp., first as chemist at the Copper Queen smelter, then, in 1908, with the Corporation's Stag Canyon coal branch at Dawson, N. M., in various capacities fro111 chemist to coke oven and coke department superintendent, and finally as general outside superintendent. While with Phelps he had some contact with the late Dr. Douglas, of whose industrial methods he has always been a great admirer.

Exxon owns a uranium mill and holds two mining leases in Live Oak County, Texas, about halfway between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. The properties make up the Felder Uranium Operations which was reopened earlier this year. Exxon held an oil, gas, and other minerals lease on the J. C. Felder tract, which was adjacent to a relatively shallow uranium discovery by Susquehanna-Western, Inc. on the Marrs-McLean lease immediately south of the Felder property. Drilling in 1967 and 1968 confirmed the presence of reduced uranium mineralization in the basal sand unit of the Oakville formation on the Felder tract, which formed the major part of the roll-front deposit. In 1969 Exxon and Susquehanna-Western, Inc. entered into a sale and purchase agreement which provided for Susquehanna to mine and process Felder ore and purchase recovered uranium. Susquehanna moved an alkaline-leach mill from Wyoming, erected it on the Ray Point property, and placed it into operation late in 1970. Susquehanna mined and processed ore from the Felder and McLean properties through March 1973. Susquehanna ceased operations in March 1973. Exxon then acquired the mill and mill property. Exxon also purchased the mineral rights to the McLean lease, re-negotiated a mining lease for that property, and carried out shut-down programs for the mining and mill areas in the fall of 1973. The project was put on a standby basis until late 1973, when Exxon initiated mine feasibility studies for the project. MINE PLANNING EVALUATION The feasibility study for reopening the Felder Project began in late 1975 and was not completed until late 1976. I will discuss several areas of the feasibility study that required additional work prior to making the decision to renew operations. Ore Reserves Preparations for estimating the ore reserves began with the re-evaluation of more than 1500 natural radioactivity logs from exploration and pre-development drilling that had been completed on the property. These gamma ray logs of non-core rotary drill holes were the principal source of data used in making the estimate. Chemical assays of cores from the deposit were also used in the reserve determination. Electric resistivity and self-potential logs were made along with the gamma ray log. In December 1975 an additional core drilling project was undertaken to confirm the in-place density and radiometric equilibrium characteristics of the ore deposits. Comparison of chemical assays of cores with the U308 values calculated from the logs showed that the unoxidized ores were in radiometric equilibrium. In contrast, cores from anomalies occurring in near surface, weathered, and oxidized zones were in radiometric disequilibrium. Several important decisions were made in developing a mine plan or schedule of production from the Felder and McLean ore bodies. Disposal of Produced Mine Water: The ore bodies of the Felder Uranium Project occur at a point below the ground water table. The ore zones to be mined must first be dewatered to allow removal of mineralized material. In the open pit operations, this is accomplished by maintaining a perimeter ditch around the periphery of the open pit, allowing the interior of the pit to drain and collect into a sump and be pumped from the mine. In addition to anticipated water production from future mining operations, approximately 200M gallons of water was contained in three open pits left from prior mining operations. In two of these existing pits, the water was to be removed and disposed to allow for planned backfilling of waste material into these pits. The third pit would also have to be drained to allow continued mining of an area left from the prior operations. Essentially no ground water information was available for this area. The only data available was water production history from Susquehanna's mining operation. Two water wells were drilled early in 1976 on the Felder lease for use in obtaining hydrological data. A long term draw-down test was performed by pumping one water well and measuring water level drawdown in both the pumped well and the observation well. From these data, values for permeability and storage coefficient were calculated. These data were then used in modeling the aquifer to allow calculation of water influx into the mining area versus time. Once a schedule of water production, including the stored volume in the existing pits was calculated, alternate solutions for disposal were evaluated. The first system evaluated was a series of deep injection wells. The wells were designed to inject at a depth of approximately 3500 feet. Again very little information concerning reservoir characteristics of the receiving sand units was known. BOB VAN PELTS boyhood days in the mining atmosphere of Colorado apparently influenced him to direct hip college education first towards geology, at. Cornell College, then to mining at Michigan College of Mines and finally to graduate work in geology at the University of Chicago. He taught geology at his alma mater. Cornell College. served as geologist for the National Park Service then was on the staff of the Illinois Geological Surrey investigating and mapping mineral resources, and in 1928 because chief of the department of geology, mining, and metallurgy in the newly organized Rosenwald Industrial Museum (now the -Museum of Science and Industry,). He was made assistant director of the Museum in 1931.

In explanation of the delay, which may have been noted by members of the Institute, which has affected both the Bulletin and Volume .59 of the Transactions, we may mention that our printers, in common with nearly all publishing concerns in the country, have recently been overwhelmed with work on text books and similar technical matter required in connection with the education of the student-army recently inaugurated by the Federal Government. Although we regret the delay in the issuing of our periodical, we cannot help feeling- that our publications are perhaps second in importance to the needs of the army. It is to be hoped that the present excessive demand for printing of- this sort will soon be passed, after which we shall resume publication with more punctuality.
