In an address delivered at Atlantic City, N. T., Dec. 5, 1918, M. L. Requa, General Director, Oil Division of the United States Fuel Administration, said: We face a new era with all its uncertainties. We have arrived at the period of reconstruction and are face to face with the problems concerning which we have so often speculated during the past four years. In all this reconstruction work the United States must bear an important part. We are looked upon to lead the way, to blaze the trail and our actions will have a profound influence upon the rest of the world. If we are to succeed, even in part, we must not be ashamed to practise economy; we must not despise the clay of small things; the little savings; we must have the closest cooperation between Government and industry. Just as truly do we need civic awakening. All that we have ever fought for, the liberty of the world, is comprehended in the ballot; and yet how lightly we have held this great privilege! We need, if we are to reap in full the benefits of the past 18 mo., an awakened civic consciousness; a jealous guarding of government; a resolution that we will, each and all, perform to the full the duties imposed upon us by Democracy; that we will perform more completely the obligations resting upon us as citizens. During the war, industry, through sane cooperation and intelligent effort, has accomplished results possible of attainment in no other way. Government and industry have worked hand in hand and pointed the way o to future activities which, if realized, can but be most highly beneficial to all. If Government and industry are to fulfill their respective duties satisfactorily, it is obvious that there should be complete mutual confidence. Industry must not attempt to "put something over"-and Government must treat with industry upon the high plane that has characterized the public utterances of the President during the war. AT THE beginning of November, Mussolini had firmly established himself at the head of the Italian Government. He himself referred to the ascendancy of the Fascisti as the result of a revo-lution and bluntly informed Parliament that it was to vote, as a matter of form, as he ordered, or else be dissolved. One of the great consequences of these events in Italy was the impetus that they gave to simi-lar movements in other countries of Continental Europe. Another great event of the month in world affairs was the repudiation by the Turks of the Mudania agreement and their notification to the Allies that the latter must evacuate Constantinople and allow the Dardanelles to be closed. This had the effect of once more consolidating Great Britain, France and Italy in so far as this question is concerned, and there was prompt refusal to accede to the demands of the Turks. With the advent of November, both the United States and Great Britain were in- the throes of political contests. The result of the American election was a landslide against the administration and especially was it an expression of agrarian discontent and a declara-tion in effect that our domestic affairs are not good in spite of political representations that they are. In Great Britain, the Conservatives were put in power by a substantial majority in Parliament, but the fact that the Labor party became numerically the second party instead of the Liberals and that it polled about 40 per cent. of the total popular vote affords ground for misgivings, especially when it be considered that the Labor party was standing on distinctly socialis-tic and communistic principles. In Russia, there was a sitting of the Third Interna-tionale, to which Lenin in a speech made a quasi-confession of the failure of the communistic experiment in Russia. He admitted, moreover, that Russia could not industrially reconstruct herself without capitalistic help. Nationally the country is making progress. During November, the Far Eastern Repub-lic surrendered to the Soviet, which thus carried Russia back to the shore of the Pacific.

From the early part of the thirteenth century bituminous coal was called "sea coal" in England, from the fact that the coal seams in the Fife and Northumberland fields outcropped on the shores of the North Sea and wave action and erosion resulted in lumps of coal being found in large quantities along the shores. These were gathered by women and children and sold for fuel to replace wood. Coal first reached London by sea, and there was a "Secole Lane" in that city in 1228. The term was gradually applied to all coal and for some hundreds of years all coal in England was called "sea coal", and the term is not yet obsolete there. Another reason for the use of a defining word was the fact that from time immemorial, in England and elsewhere, the word coal meant char-coal, or coal made from wood, as this was the common fuel of those times when anything other than natural wood was burned. The biblical references to coal all mean wood-coals or charcoal, and one must be careful in writings prior to at least 1750, when "coal" is used to be sure that it means stone, or mineral coal, rather than wood or charcoal. "Sea-coal" was in common use along the Atlantic seaboard until after about 1780; the first map showing coal in Pennsylvania, Ohip and Kentucky, made as of 1750, used the term "sea-coal here."2 In the interior stone coal was used by the early writers almost entirely, partly to differentiate it from charcoal, but largely because it was found with stones and rocks, and in most places then had the same value. "Fossil" coal was used by Hamilton in 1790. Jefferson called it mineral coal and pit coal in 1781. The term mineral coal was usually used in the governmental references to it as late as 1850, but the present use of bituminous coal began as soon as anthracite came on the market in 1820. Both mineral and stone coal still survive in the laws of several states specifying the weight of a bushel of coal.

The constitution of the iron-rich iron-nickel-silicon alloys at 600ºC. has been determined by X-ray crystal structure methods. If the results are represented isothermally by a conventional equilateral triangular plot, the single-phase solid solution (body-centered cubic structure) of the iron-rich alloys at 600°C. is bounded by four two-phase areas. Three three-phase areas separate the respective two-phase areas. Three of the phases in the polyphase areas have the same structures as the corresponding phases in the binary iron-nickel or iron-silicon alloys. There are two phases, however, that have not been reported previously and whose structures have been tentatively identified in the present investigation. The solid solubility limit of the iron-rich solid solution at 600°C. was determined by comparing the lattice constants of this body-centered cubic phase in the single and polyphase areas. It has been shown that the lattice constants of ternary alloys may be represented by surfaces whose distances above the ternary plot (representing atomic composition) are proportional to the lattice constants of the respective alloys. Then the intersections of the surface for the single-phase alloys with those for the corresponding phase in the polyphase alloys, at the respective temperatures, are the solid solubility limits of the single-phase alloys at these temperatures. The data of the present investigation were evaluated by this method, although by a system of orthographic projection it was possible to represent the three-dimensional model in two-dimensional diagrams. This investigation has shown that the solid solubility of nickel in the body-centered cubic phase of the iron-rich iron-nickel-silicon alloys at 600°C. changes from 3.7 weight per cent (Owen and Sulley) in the binary iron-nickel alloys to 5.0 per cent in the ternary alloys containing 4.8 per cent silicon. Further additions of silicon increase the solid solubility limit of nickel to 16.0 per cent at 12.6 per cent silicon. From this point the limit decreases to 9.5 per cent nickel at 15.5 per cent silicon and is, of course, zero at 15.3 per cent silicon in the binary iron-silicon alloys.

IN the Journal of the Franklin Institute for May, 1870, there is published a description of a Colorimeter, together with a modification of the method proposed by Professor Eggertz, for determining combined carbon in iron and steel. An instrument of the kind there described, but of a little higher range, though in other respects not differing materially from the one originally made and used in the Iron-Masters7 Laboratory, I now submit to your inspection ; and I propose, also, to make some determinations minations with it for the purpose of showing how quickly they may be made, and enabling you to form some judgment of what reliance can be placed in the results. Professor Eggertz proposed only a single standard, and the solution to be tested should be diluted to exactly correspond in color with that of the standard, and the per cent. of carbon calculated after carefully noting and making allowance for the measures of water used in diluting. In practice, difficulty was found in bringing the color of the normal solution down to the exact shade of the standard; also other difficulties were met with in conducting the process, causing delay and interfering with the accuracy of the results. To materially overcome these, and after numerous attempts, an instrument such as is now before you suggested itself to me; and also I concluded to use a larger quantity of metal than directed by Eggertz, and, in addition, to filter the solution from its insoluble matter before making the comparison; and, more recently, to use an acid of just such strength as would completely dissolve the metal without the application of heat. Experimenting with these changes from the original method I obtained reasonably good results. The instrument, you will observe, consists of a series of tubes, sixteen in number, two and a half inches long, and about half an inch in diameter, standing upright, and securely fastened in a light, portable, walnut-wood frame, but separated one from the other so as to allow just sufficient space between to place for comparison the . tube containing the solution to be tested. Va.-How near the size of the sand can the coal to be treated be brought? Do you use an 8-mesh coal on that cleaner? J. J. RUTLEDGE, Baltimore, Md.-From the little I have seen of the apparatus in operation, I should say 8-mesh. In my experience in metalmine concentration work, trying to separate different minerals on one jig, sometimes I have succeeded and sometimes not. This apparatus has appealed to me; something of this kind should be useful with the silicates and carbonates of zinc. I think this apparatus has possibilities in metal mining. Recently in our coal field a screen has been introduced for cleaning coal; it is giving excellent service. When I asked the inventor why he did not take it to the metal mines, he said there was a good and sufficient reason, in a patent way. There may be reasons why it would not be applicable for metal mining; but the simplicity of it appeals to me and I cannot see why it could not be so used. T. FRASER (written discussion).-We feel that 8-mesh would be about -the minimum size of coal practicable to treat by the air-sand process. This would depend partly upon the friability of the coal. The more nearly the lower size limits of the coal- approaches the size of the sand, the more .time will be required in screening the sand out of the cleaned coal, which would mean a little more chance of breakage. In regard to the treatment of ores; this would necessitate the use of some heavier mediums than ordinary silica sand, or some other means of making the separation at a higher specific gravity than is required for coal. We are now working on a method of obtaining this effect for the preparation of anthracite coal without resorting to the use of heavier and more expensive material than common sand.

Peruvian production for the year 1935 amounted to 17,064,879 bbl., a record amount for any year, bringing the cumulative production of the country up to 188 million barrels. The 1935 figure is an increase of 785,769 bbl. over the 1934 total. The property of the International Petroleum Co. contributed 636,812 bbl. of this increase, and the Lobitos property 158,625 barrels. Exploration work in the country was again active, with attention focused on three areas, the Huallaga River, Lake Titicaca and the Coastal Zone of the Province of Tumbes. It is reported that in the Huallaga River area the Selden Breck Construction Co. has completed geological and engineering studies on its Pachitea River concessions and has ordered a drilling rig. In the Lake Titicaca region further studies in the vicinity of Pusi were made by Government geologists. During the period from 1906 to 1915, the Pirin anticline in this area produced 285,936 bbl. of low-grade crude. The Government holds 120,000 hectares of reserved lands in this area. In the Coastal Zone of the Province of Tumbes explorations by the Government were continued on the National Reserve, and a test location has been selected in the Quebrada Zapotal about 10 miles from the Port of Zorritos. An order has been placed in the United States for drilling equipment. LaBrea-Parinas Estate.—Production on the LeBrea-Parinas Estate reached an all-time high in 1935 of 14,756,914 bbl., an increase of 636,812 bbl. over the 1934 record. The total production from 1890 to 1935 was 148,541,523 bbl. During 1935 a total of 63,021 ft. was drilled in new wells and 5449 ft. in deepening existing wells; 23 wells were deepened and 29 new wells were completed, of which 27 were producers and 2 were dry holes. At the end of the year 2873 wells had been drilled on the Estate, of which 1838 were still productive. The remaining 1035 wells represent abandoned producers or dry holes. Practically all the drilling on the property has been done with cable tools, but during 1934 three strings of rotary tools were introduced. This paper is the result of a study, in 1919, to determine how much surplus power could be produced through the proper utilization of the entire gas flow from the two furnace stacks at the Federal Furnace Plant, South Chicago, 111. Obviously, the problem was to measure the flow of gas through the main beyond the point where the amount necessary for stove operation mas rermoved. In all probability, blast-furnace gas is the most difficult gas to measure, because of the high moisture and dust content, and the widely fluctuating flow from the furnaces. This wide fluctuation of flow forbids the acceptance of any one group of flow road-ings as indicative of normal operating conditions. A study of the conditions showed that a recording device on gas flow was necessary. As the gas at the point of measurement had passed through met washers, and accordingly was saturated with water and contained considerable dust carried past the scrubbers in the form of sludge, no form of Pitot tube could be used, for this sludge would quickly plug the dynamic. and static holes, spoiling the gage readings. An even more serious objection to the use of Pitot tubes was the impossibility of accurately measuring the cross-sectional area of the gas main on the plane of Pitot-tube installation. Given an absolutely clean gas and a perfectly circular pipe, it would be safe to assume, through measurements of the pipe diameter, that the gas main was of a certain cross-sectional area. But the continual depositing of sludge and the fact that the main mas fabricated from riveted sheets led us to discard the idea of using Pitot tubes for. this service. The Venturi tube mas then considered, and had there been a sufficiently long straight run of gas main to accommodate a tube of the required size (72 by 28 in.) such an installation would very likely have been made. The opening session of the Institute was held at Hazle Hall, Tuesday evening, October 27th, with a large attendance of members. President Raymond called the Institute to order, and after a few introductory remarks, introduced Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, President of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Mr. Bell was received with great applause, and made his acknowledgments in a brief speech, of which the following is the substance: He desired to thank the Institute personally for the honor conferred upon him in his election to membership, and also for the invitation extended last year to the body of which he was President. The difficulty felt by many members of the Iron and Steel Institute, of leaving for a long journey the works of which they had charge, aggravated by special industrial troubles at the time of the invitation, had obliged them to conclude that it could not then be accepted in a fitting manner. The iron .manufacture of this country is a subject of great interest to Englishmen, who look with pride upon the achievements on this side the water of the descendants of a common ancestry. His own reception in this country had far surpassed in cordiality even the well-grounded anticipations he had formed from the assurances of the President and other friends. Notwithstanding the flattering manner in which his friend, in introducing him to the Institute, had spoken of his contributions to the science of iron metallurgy, he could not take to himself alone the significance of this welcome. He knew it was a recognition of the services rendered by the body which he had the honor to represent; and he was glad to see present a member of that body, Mr. Thomas Whitwell, who had fortunately been able to make the journey at this time, arid whom he had had the pleasure of meeting on the shores of Lake Champlain. Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1937 was slightly over 37,000 bbl., an 85 per cent increase over the preceding year and the highest since 1928. Closer cooperation between the operators and the State Division of Geology has resulted in more accurate data than have been possible for the past few years. Such cooperation is most desirable, especially in this state, which has no law requiring the filling of drilling permits, logs, and production figures. The increased production for the year has resulted from discoveries of four small pools in the shallow district of Clay and near-by counties. The most promising of these began production late in 1937 and consequently has had little effect on the 1937 total. These discoveries, along with renewed activities in some of the older areas, have increased the production for Clay and adjoining counties from less than 5000 bbl. during 1936 to over 21,000 bbl. in 1937. The Mississippi lime production in Scott and Morgan Counties declined from 16,335 bbl. in 1936 to 14,644 bbl. during 1937. While the decline curve on this production has been gradual, some of the wells are over 20 years old, and it becomes necessary to look for other favorable structures in this general region if increased production is to be obtained or past production maintained. The only natural gas marketed off the lease in Tennessee during 1937 was in Morgan County, where a small amount was furnished for the town of Sunbright and its immediate vicinity. The gas occurs with the oil in the Boone Camp field and small amounts were put on the line from the near-by Coon Hollow and Seabolt pools. Development There were 59 wells spudded in during 1937, of which 18 were drilling or only temporarily shut down on Dec. 31, 1937. Of the 41 completions, 17 produced oil, 5 were gas wells of undetermined quantity, and 19 were dry or near-dry holes. The flush production on the new wells totaled about 1300 bbl. per day. Law is as old as civilization. In its early stages the so-called law of the jungle, "the survival of the fittest," was entirely operative. Man was quite largely a law unto himself and was likewise his own lawyer. As civilization developed and individuals segregated themselves into bands or communities, man-made laws became a reality, the individual sacrificing certain privileges for the benefit of the band or community in which he was privileged to live. Our present system of law is a continued development of that process. Very early in this development the exigencies of the occasion called into being classes of individuals who were given to study the laws then existing, and this group became known as lawyers. They advised what could or could not be done under existing laws. They were the aggressors in formulating new laws and principles under which the communities must live. Concurrently with the development of the law and the lawyer, the engineering profession was born. In our early civilization, each man was his own engineer; he built his own home, constructed his own bridge, and provided his own means of conveyance. As civilization became more complex, technical study was required to consummate projects and thus meet the requirements of an expanding community. The engineering profession assumed this burden. Both groups were human and thus susceptible to human mistakes and errors. It was Macaulay who said: "The world generally gives its admiration not to the man who does what nobody else ever attempts to do, but to the man who does best what multitudes do well." BiRth of Petroleum Industry In 1859, by the completion of the Drake well in Pennsylvania, the petroleum industry as we know it was born. Its rapid progress since that time has been both extraordinary and remarkable. The zeal of the individual operator to secure all possible oil in the shortest time, even to the extent of bringing into possession a part of the oil underlying a neighbor's property, developed unnecessary drilling, wasteful methods of recovery, great loss of gas, the early abandonment of property with much unrecovered oil thereunder. THE possibilities of finding new oil pools in Oklahoma and Kansas are far from promising. In 1916, the only new pools of importance were the Franchot pool near Bixby, the Garber, and the Billings pools in Oklahoma, and the Virgil and Utopia fields in Greenwood County, Kansas. In the first 8 months of 1917, a small pool of unknown extent was opened south of the Stone Bluff pool in Oklahoma, and a pool near Casey, Paunee County, Oklahoma. In Eastern Kansas, interest has been. caused by the sinking of new wells near the old Iola pool, but nothing of magnitude has yet been found. The outlook for new pools is far from encouraging, especially as geological surveys have covered all of Oklahoma and Kansas. There are a few areas where geological surveys throw little or no light on the subject, as exposures are poor, but the chances of finding new pools in such areas are slight indeed, if one can judge from the past history of such areas. So far the geologists have based their opinions largely upon the presence or the absence of geologic structure, such as anticlines, domes, and terraces, but some pools will most certainly be found where no surface structure exists, but where local changes in the sand body favor oil accumulations. However, the possibilities of new pools off structure are small, as fully 90 per cent. of the oil pools are on definite structure. In the past, it is estimated that one test in 150 "wild cats" or new tests has brought in a new field. The writer feels safe in asserting that the proportion will decrease still further, so that but one out of 500 new tests may bring in a pay well in a new area. From now on the principal field of work in Oklahoma and in Kansas will consist in developing the present pools. The years 1915, 1916 and 1917 saw the high peak of Oklahoma and Kansas oil production. The Eldorado and the Augusta oil fields present the largest possibilities for continued production in Kansas. THE Eastern district, composed of New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, with its native ores, was the cradle of the iron industry of the United States The district attained and held the leadership in production of pig iron for over 100 years, from pre-Revolutionary days to approximately 1875 The first shipment of Lake hematite ore was made in 1853 It was a small shipment, transported by a sailing vessel and a canal barge, but it was the beginning of the end of the supremacy of the Eastern district, although at that time the ore was supposed to be too rich to be successfully smelted with the block coal then in use at western furnaces The iron made from the first shipment of Lake ore was worked into nails by the Sharon Iron Co , at Sharon, Pa The writer's great-grandfather, David Agnew, and his brother, John P Agnew, owners and operators of the Sharpsville furnace, Sharpsville, Pa , worked the shipment through a furnace Because of this, the writer feels some satisfaction in having been one of a group that solved the problem of making profitable an operation using Eastern district ores exclusively With the development of Lake mines, and the production and use of coke, the Middle West district gradually assumed the position of leadership in production, because, even though the ores were transported 1000 miles by water and rail, its cost figure on pig iron was better than that of the eastern producer whose furnace was next to his mine Such a cost figure was possible because the ore was naturally rich in iron and reduced easily It was possible to carry a heavy burden on the furnace, which resulted in large tonnage and low coke per ton of iron This paper is in no sense a technical one The purpose is to show that with the proper physical preparation of the Eastern magnetites they will reduce as easily as the Lake hematites, and because of the high iron concentration give the Eastern producer just as much advantage as formally he was at a disadvantage in comparison with the Middle West producer

Hunt, Professor Kerr, Dr. Genth, Rogers, Safford, Professor Egleston, Dr. H. E. Colton, the writer, and others, and described in one or more of the volumes of our Transactions, as well as in other publications. The greater quantity of' these ores being pyrrhotite, although much of them carry nonmagnetic disulphide, their reduction on the gronnd will probably lead to better results than an attempt to mine and ship them to distant places; and their use as sulphuric acid producers, to be employed in the cheap manufacture of valuable fertilizers, will be chiefly the subject of this paper. The great deposits of Carroll County, Va., are now nearer to railway transportation than any of the others, being six to eight miles from the Cripple Creek extension of the Norfolk and Western Railway, now being constructed, the grading of which is in an advanced state of completion. I am not able to state what are the present prospects of an early completion of the contemplated line of railway to Ducktown. For a long while, during the time those deposits were mined and reduced for their copper, the works were forty miles from any railway ; and the same may be said of Ore Knob, N. C. The deposits in Carroll and Grayson Counties, Va., being now the most accessible to cheap transportation, will naturally claim the greater part of our attention ; though it may be pertinent to remark, just here, that the ores of Ducktown, like those of Carroll and Grayson, Va., exist in the undecomposed levels as iron and copper sulphurets, much of which is a non-magnetic disulphide, as stated, with occasional exhibits of sulphides, such as covellite, erubescite, etc. There are, now and then, small quantities of silver, lead, and zinc,

In the summer of 1877, the writer led a party of four young men from Cleveland, Ohio, by way of the Great Lakes, to Prince Arthur's Landing (now Port Arthur), at the northwest corner of Lake Superior, thence, via the Dawson route and side journeys, as far as Cross Lake. It was the original intention to pass down the Pigeon river to its mouth, but the loss of one member of the party for six days in the forest, added to other obstacles, made it necessary to turn back. A well-filled note-book, together with illustrative collections, were sunk beyond recovery at the head of the Maligne rapids by the breaking of a tow-line, and two of our number (including myself) narrowly escaped drowning. I had, probably, obtained information of considerable economic value, but the necessity of travelling nearly 125 miles for provisions (excepting a meagre supply kindly furnished us by a Canadian government gang whom we fortunately met), rendered further note-taking impossible. Until now, such results of this expedition as could be recorded . from memory have gone unpublished, because of my inability to make them serve any useful purpose. The trip of the Institute to Vermilion Lake, only a few miles south and east of our turning point, gives some little excuse for presenting the following lines at this time. The ridge back of Port Arthur, Ontario, which follows approximately the course of the Lake Superior shore line, brings up the slates and accompanying strata through which the silver and gold veins of that region have penetrated. The interior district, hack from the lake, may be briefly described as a glaciated area, having its general drainage less modified by erosion than by the original structure. This statement, however, must be somewhat qualified with reference to minor details, which all bear the unmistakable impress of the ice-flow and its recession. In many respects there is much in this tract to remind one of the Sault Ste. Marie topography, excepting that the granitic character of the rocks is here largely replaced by fissile strata. Surveying what was done in 1929 in meeting problems of oil-field equipment corrosion, one is struck by the fact that fewer meetings were held for discussion of these problems and fewer papers written than in any year since the subject engaged the attention of petroleum engineers. This does not mean that progress has not been made, for a great deal actually has been accomplished. Recommendations that accompanied field reports have been put into actual trial and some results obtained are gratifying. The type of papers prepared also has undergone a change, for they now deal with things accomplished rather than recite damages and suggest possible remedies. Some of the most notable work pointing the way for future solution of many pipe line problems is that done for the U. S. Bureau of Standards by Dr. K. H. Logan and Dr. Gordon N. Scott, dealing with tests of pipe coatings and reports on soil conditions. Many facts of great importance have been isolated and defined by these two men, not only indicating what may be done in some instances to retard corrosion, but showing that things formerly considered of importance have little bearing apparently upon the practical results. All-aluminum Storage Tanks In April, 1928, an all-aluminum 500-bbl. field storage tank was put into actual field use in Crane County, Texas, together with another tank of the same capacity but made with steel bottom and lower section of side sheets and aluminum upper ring of side sheets and deck. In April, 1929, after a little over one year's use these tanks were opened and examined by a group of engineers and chemists. The results of the test were enlightening. Other tanks made entirely of steel and used in the same battery with the two test tanks had some of their side and bottom sheets destroyed by corrosion in six to nine months, but the all-aluminum tank was in actual use for 18 months before holes were found corroded through the bottom, when the tank was examined for a second time in September, 1929. Oil and gas development in Utah in 1936 added nothing of importance to the commercial possibilities of the state and consisted principally of efforts to reach objectives in wildcat wells started prior to 1936. Leasing activity on structures having oil and gas possibilities in beds of Pennsylvanian age or older followed announcement by the Standard Oil Company of California that a test of beds of Mississippian age would be made on the San Rafael structure. DRilling Clay Basin, Dagget County.—The Mountain Fuel Supply Co. completed a third well, sec. 16, T. 3 N., R. 24 E., on a flank of this structure. Total developed open flow of the field is approximately 50 million cubic feet and sufficient reserve has been established to warrant construction in 1937 of a pipe line connecting with the Salt Lake City-Ogden line. San Rafael, Emery County.—The Standard Oil Company of California started a wildcat test in sec. 22, T. 23 S., R. 11 E. Circulation was lost in a water-filled cavity, in dolomitic limestone, below 2185 ft. and the hole conditioned as a water supply for drilling a second test in sec. 27, T. 23 S., R. 11 E. The Carter Oil Co. in 1921 drilled a well in sec. 24, T. 23 S., R. 11 E., which was abandoned at a depth of 3035 ft. after testing at least a part of the Pennsylvanian section. Czsco, Grand County.—Drilling operations at the Utah Sout.hern Oil Company's test in sec. 33, T. 22 S., R. 22 E., continued throughout the year. Information obtained by means of a seismographic survey of the area indicated that beds of Pennsylvanian age would be found at approximately 2500 ft. The bottom of the hole at 6300 ft. is believed to be in beds of Pennsylvanian age but positive determination has not been made froin the drill cuttings. Green River, Grand County.—Test of Glen Ruby et al., sec. 34, T. 21 S., R. 16 E., was abandoned at 2627 ft. as a dry hole after drilling into Permian Kaibab limestone. Shows of oil and gas were reported and a flow of carbon dioxide gas under low pressure encountered.

The old do not love to see the young pass away from the light of the sun before them. Fathers would fain keep their sons by their side to the. end of life ; but the old Greeks, who loved the old gods, were wont to moderate their grief with the sweet superstition that only those whom their gods especially loved died early. The Christian church found consolation in that superstition applied in a new form to its new sorrows, and paid its most enthusiastic devotion to the memories of its young and beautiful martyrs. The natural science of our century is robbing us fast of this and all other superstitions, sweet as well as bitter, and leaving us for consolation to the teaching—colder, yet kinder—of personal fortitude and that optimism Which intelligently translates the Cosmos of Humboldt back into its old name of the Harmonia of Pythagoras. The Homeric Kataclothes, the three fates, are dead and gone for us, with that old world which comprehended none of the laws of cause and effect, and sorrowed for those who were cut off from the land of the living without hope of more than a shadowy existence beyond the river of death. All the more the ancients cherished the memory of their dead and lavished their choicest art upon their monuments. We moderns have lost the monumental arts, but we better keep the monuments which our dead leave behind them. No one of us who has done good work can fail to be remembered; and in an Institute like this, which keeps the press at work, an immortality in the memory of men is more possible, more certain, for every one of its members than the greatest heroes of antiquity could anticipate for themselves. In old apocalyptic times the works of men followed them through death to the throne of God to be their advocates in judgment, but in these modern times our works remain this side the grave, to follow the name of the departed one as it takes its course along the history of his peculiar art or science advancing slowly to perfection.
