The year 1941 was uneventful in oil and gas development in Missouri. No new pools were opened and several areas with promising structures, in the northwestern part of the state, were disappointing when drilled. In looking for an explanation of these failures, it is suggested that it will be necessary to find areas in which the lower beds of the Mississippian are upfolded, in order to obtain production in northwestern Missouri. To do this, geophysical exploration or test drilling far enough into the Mississippian beds to get cores or cuttings of definitely established age appear to be the best methods. Although not leading to new production, drilling in Missouri established two new state records, one for depth and another for the amount of rotary drilling. An important well† in sec. 24, T. 19 N., R. 11 E., Pemiscot County, in the southeastern corner of the state, was drilled with a rotary to 4740 ft., several hundred feet deeper than any previous hole. The total footage drilled by rotary rigs of various types was 31,135 ft. and that by cable tools, 29,166 feet. The total number of completions was 85, of which 18 were gas wells with an initial open-flow capacity of 12,528,000 cu. ft., and 67 were dry holes. Of the latter, 19 were drilled into Mississippian or older formations. Table I gives a summary of activities by counties.

The following letter was received from Prof. Kemp in reply to a telegram expressing the greetings of the members attending the Annual Meeting in New York. "Melbourne Beach, Fla. Feb. 17, 1916. Dear Mr. Stoughton: The welcome telgram from the members of the Institute, which you kindly trans-mitted to me, came safely yesterday and I catch the next available mail with a heart-felt acknowledgment. I cannot express to you how greatly the remembrance cheers and braces me during the days of patient waiting for the feeling of over-strain to fully pass, and for the time when I can again be back among the friends in the Institute who are very clear to me. While I cannot reach all the members who joined in the telegram I will ask you to say to such as are available that I am profoundly sensible of the thoughtfulness which prompted the message. I write from a little bungalow on the ocean. side of the half mile or more of sand dunes, thickly grown with palmetto, which separate the ocean from the Indian River. Two miles or more of Indian River still intervene between the little colony of Melbourne Beach and Melbourne on the mainland and on the Florida East Coast R. R. where the telegraph station is. I was thus unable to respond at once by wire. Sincerely yours, (Signed) J. F. Kemp."

Having recently had occasion to make a series of analyses of fire-clays for the present Ohio Geological Survey, I found that the amounts of potash and soda determined indirectly by measuring the chlorides volumetrically did not " check " with those obtained directly. Investigation with the spectroscope showed the presence of lithia in what seemed very appreciable quantities. The examination was made of a considerable number of samples, and in every case this element was found, though in varying amounts, as judged by the intensity of the spectrum. To guard against error from the impurity of reagents, the whole process was repeated, using the same reagents in corresponding amounts, but leaving ont the clay. In no case did these " blanks" show lithia; hence the presence of this element in the clays seemed to be established conclusively. In the same series of analyses, titanic acid, in amounts varying from three-tenths to nearly two per cent., was found. The presence of titanium was first observed in the Ohio clays, nearly three years ago, in the examination of clays from Logan. The occurrence of this element is, of course, not unusual in clay, but I believe that none of the published analyses of Ohio clays give it; certainly none of the former Ohio geological reports speak of its presence. The following analyses show both the above ingredients. They were made during the summer of 1883.

The first light of dawn was appearing through the window of the giant Pan American Boeing 747 as we crossed the Irish Coast on course into London's Heathrow Airport While still over Ireland, the plane began its descent and a few minutes later an announcement on the public address system informed us that we were coming up on Lands End. Cornwall, and would then begin our final approach into London. Barely visible below through the WISP). clouds were the Seven Sisters Lighthouse and the rugged cliffs of Lands End and Cape Cornwall, the westcrnmost point of England. Start at Lands End To a displaced Englishman, it seems amazing that technology has brought us to a point where large jet aircraft use Lands End as the starting marker for final approaches into London. It was not so very long ago that we considered the eight-hour car journey or the 12- hour train trip from London to Lands End as a major undertaking. Today, with the 180,000-lb thrust of four engines, this enormous aircraft transports 350 or more passengers that distance in a matter of a quarter of an hour. The incongruity of the situation is that the technology leading up to the development of the powerful jet engines used on: today's aircraft started with the ; invention of the steam engine which found its first commercial use some 300 years earlier in the mines of Cornwall 20,000 ft below.

In July 1946 President Truman approved the stock- piling act providing for the accumulation of stocks of strategic minerals in which this country is deficient. Congress also provided huge sums for the purchase of these materials to initiate the program. In order to meet anticipated stock pile goals it will be necessary for the United States to import very large quantities of 70 strategic materials, by far the largest items being minerals and metals. There are no priorities of relative importance in the list, as the lack of any single item may cause industry to fail in its part in national defense. Stock piles of material in a form as close as possible to the ultimate fabricated state represent not only the actual material physically on hand but also "canned" labor, transportation, smelting, refining, and all other steps. Central and South America, together with Canada and Newfoundland, in their normal capacity as sources of supply will be called upon to furnish a sizable pro- portion of the total requirements. No special measures should be arranged for this purpose; it will be more practical to make purchases in accordance with the availability of materials of desired quality, not by reference to geographic area. Much has been said in the past, and may be repeated in the future, concerning the desirability of hemispheric self-sufficiency-both from a resources and from a military security viewpoint. In recent years, with the advent of new steelmaking procedures, the emphasis has turned away from conventional teeming and has been directed toward continuous casting. This paper points out the fact that there are still new methods being considered to decrease the problems and costs associated with conventional teeming. Although Inland has had no experience with the repair of mold lugs, we do find some problem with damaged ears associated with mechanically capped steel. When pouring bottle tops, any crane movement or leak from the pouring nozzle may result in steel over the top of the mold which, in turn, may result in the shearing of the mold lugs during stripping. Recent back pouring practices increase the chances of this occurring. At Inland's steelmaking shops, we have tried to combat this problem by various methods such as burning the steel from around the top of the mold at the pouring stand with oxy-gas torches. Last year, No. 4 BOF began a conversion from round to elliptically shaped bottle top caps. This change has greatly reduced the chance of splashing due to crane swing by increasing the dimension in the direction on normal swing. The answer to this particular problem is, however, tighter control of pouring performance. We are presently engaged in a process of re-education of personnel and experimentation with different materials and designs of nozzles, heads, and sleeves to help us achieve our goal.

Probably it won't happen to us again in a thousand years, but it was very embarassing at the time. It is only because of certain matters that have come up this month that we tell you at all about it. At the beginning of our trip to Peru and Chile last summer, we were flying with Bill Haddon from Lima to Tacna aboard Fawcett. Being an old hand at foreign travel, particularly in South America, we felt obliged to explain some of the special features of travel in Latin America and the niceties of etiquette in particular and were so engaged when the plane landed at the airport. We led the way briskly into the terminal, expecting at any moment to have a representative of Southern Peru Copper pop up and present himself. However, this didn't happen so we repaired to the baggage arrival station to wait. All the bags were quickly picked up, but ours were no where to be seen. Bill was slightly agitated because the plane was being buttoned up for take off. However, rising to the emergency with our usual aplomb, we took charge of the situation. Brandishing the claim checks under the nose of the porter who pointed to them and said, "si, Tacna," we nodded briskly and in our serviceable Spanish said "si se[n]or, vayase viejo, rapido." He was off and back with our suitcases quickly enough.

The total crude production from the Dutch East Indies, and the British Protectorates of Sarawak and Brunei for 1932 is given in the following table: Production, which had shown a rapid increase from 1921 to 1929, has since been reduced. Exploitation drilling in the majority of the larger fields was suspended and existing production kept within predetermined limits by beaning. Most of the smaller fields were shut down entirely. The depth of producing levels varies widely in the different fields. Shallow fields with drilling depths to 500 meters (1650 ft.) are still numerous as well as those with depths between 500 and 1000 m. (3300 ft.). A few of the newer fields reach greater drilling depths up to 1600 m. (5250 ft.). The deepest exploration well drilled to date (Djambi field, South Sumatra) reached a, depth of 2332 m. (7650 ft.) before abandonment in March, 1930. The specific gravities of the various crude oils produced range between 0.65 (86.2° A.P.I.) and 0.95 (17.5° A.P.I.). The lighter crudes have a high gasoline content and fuel oils are derived from the heavier crudes, which usually are rich in paraffin. MUCH has been said and written about the various uses of die-castings, their applications in the various industries and their advantages and disadvantages. Examination of this literature, however, fails to disclose any data concerning the effect of temperature upon any of the physical properties of die-casting alloys. The uses and applications of die castings are so numerous, and of such a varied nature, that far too lengthy a manuscript would be required to list all of them. Brief mention of some specific cases will suffice to illustrate the temperature ranges in which certain die castings function. Automobile hardware, such as hub caps, door handles, radiator caps, etc., can be used as one example. Castings of this type are constantly exposed to varying climatic conditions, temperatures ranging from below zero to upwards of 100° F. Refrigerator parts, such as ice-cube trays, etc., form another example. Approaching the other temperature extreme, we encounter conditions such as are found in kitchens in which oven-heat indicator parts, cooking utensils, waffle grids, etc., embody use of die castings, where temperatures as high as 500° F. are often met with. Because of this variation in service temperatures, it was felt necessary to ascertain the effect of these temperatures upon the physical properties of die-casting alloys. The Charpy impact test was chosen first because of its simplicity, and because of the fact that brittleness is more likely to be objectionable in die castings than hardness or other physical properties.

UNQUESTIONABLY, the outstanding feature of the piping for the sulphide plant is the large amount which had to be done in almost every size from instrument tubing to 84 in. OD pipe. In this article the piping will be considered under the main headings of Yard Piping and Building Piping. Tables I and II give data concerning the individual systems. In the case of yard piping the figures pertaining to lengths and weights are approximately correct; those for building piping are given only for the concentrator and smelter buildings where the amounts were the most extensive. Yard Piping The installation specifications for yard piping called for all sizes larger than 12 in. to have welded joints made with outside welding rings. This type of joint was selected over butt-welded joints because less time would be needed for lining up, damaged pipe ends would be less of a problem, and deflections up to 6° per joint could be made when necessary. These advantages were thought to outweigh the disadvantage of the greater amount of welding required. Yard piping in sizes of 3 to 12 in. was specified to have butt-welded joints made with inside welding rings which were intended to facilitate lining up and keep welding material out of the lines. Screwed connections were specified for sizes under 3 in. No protective coatings or wrappings were required on pipe to be buried because of the dry climate at Chuquicamata.

FOR more than 25 years evaluations of coal cleaning units have appeared in many publications, and during this time considerable progress has been made in developing the theory and techniques of calculating washery results. A variety of characteristics have been defined over the years, many receiving general recognition during the first post-war Coal Preparation Conference in Paris in 1950. Coal preparation has become a science, and the approach to preparation problems is being revolutionized. Formerly, for example, if a coal operator wanted to know the performance of a given cleaning unit for a particular grade of his run-of-mine, he either shipped a carload to the manufacturer for a test run or relied on a report of a test carried out on a coal similar to the one he intended to clean. In modern practice the expensive, time-consuming test work generally can be avoided if the washability curves of the coal in question and the error curve of the cleaner are known. Normally a guarantee can be given on the strength of this information. General acceptance of modern standards has thus reduced the need for pilot-scale models of existing types of coal cleaners. Needless to say, the method requires exhaustive and accurate information on the cleaning unit and on all the additional circumstances affecting its results, in- formation that ultimately can be secured only from actual tests made in the laboratory or in the washery.

SUMMARY A detailed analysis of nickel, copper, and cobalt recovery from manganese nodules shows simple rates of return of 9-15% in 1985. A sulfur dioxide roast process yields a slightly better return than an ammonia leach technique. Nodule tonnage predictions tend to be over-optimistic and more conservative forecasts show that market penetrations are only significant for cobalt and manganese. However, cobalt prices are unlikely to fall to the level of nickel. Between now and 1985, cobalt is expected to be in balanced to tight availability. INTRODUCTION Deep-ocean manganese nodules are one- to two-inch concretions which cover 2040% of large areas of the ocean bottom. Commercial targets far these black, potato-like nodules are located in the North Pacific at water depths of 5,000-6,000 m. in a belt roughly midway between Hawaii and Mexico. However, good grade nodules are not solely limited to this belt as areas southwest and northwest of Hawaii, as well as in the Indian Ocean, contain concentrations of acceptable grade manganese nodules. Some 90% of the nodules are found half-buried on the deep ocean bottom. A siliceous-ooze host soil combined with low sedimentation rates, certain ocean currents, and possible geo- thermal effects are favorable factors far nodule formation. IN my thirty years of educational work in the mineral industries and other engineering fields, this past year has been the most unusual and difficult one. Contact with educators from other schools leads to the conclusion that the same situation is countrywide. The first of our difficulties came from the shortsighted policy of the Selective Service in taking out of the colleges, continuously, all engineering students as soon as they had reached their eighteenth birthday. England, Canada, and Russia, too, even in the midst of their critical war situations, had the good sense to keep their young engineering brains in college, for they realized the vital necessity of a steady flow of engineering graduates into the war industries and into the postwar peace industries. As a result of the policy of our Government, our engineering schools were left with only a handful of students who had been rejected for military service. Our colleges, faced with the prospect of several years without students and without income, hastened to give leave of absence to many of their competent teachers who quickly were taken into industry and in many instances are now being retained there at higher salaries than colleges are accustomed or able to pay their teaching personnel. We are finding it most difficult to induce these men to return to their former engineering teaching work. In my judgment, it will take us three or four years to restore our engineering departments to their former level in quality of instruction.

The Marine Corps has found the Mining and Sapping Department one of the most efficient individual organizations of the Soldiers of the Sea. The men of the unit were assembled among "hard rock" miners from Montana, Idaho, and Utah; most of the detachment hail from Butte. It includes experienced gas-helmet men, blacksmiths, compressors, carpenters, timbermen, concrete and cement gun experts, diamond drill runners, civil and mining engineers, in fact, artisans of every craft in and around mines. Experienced miners with both technical college training in mining and engineering and the practical turn of actual work as mine superintendents and foremen are used as instructors in their craft, except thirty-eight who "shoved off" with the Eleventh Regiment to actually apply their skill in Marine trenches abroad. They are the "finishers" after the trenches are dug. Covering and camouflaging the tops for protection against attacks from the air, engineering the arrangement of the trenches for protection against shell fire, establishing listening posts by projecting "Russian saps" within a few yards of the enemy's trench; sapping or tunnelling into the very lines of the Teutons, and leaving pleasant little bundles of explosives there; are just a few of the high spots touched by these wizards of the soil. They make the trenches comfortable, plastering the interiors until the underground bunk houses not only look like hotels but are just as comfortable "with all the modern conveniences." Draining is another feature which the work of the Miners and Sappers at least partially assures.

IN beginning my remarks, may I make it entirely clear that since January 4, 1947, I have not been a member of the United States Delegation to-the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission I am speaking, therefore, in purely a personal capacity. Because of the interest of the engineering profession with reference to uranium, and because of the title assigned me for this talk, I am going to assume that you know what the United States Plan is for the control of atomic energy. At best, in the limited time, I could only summarize, at the risk of giving undue emphasis to the items mentioned, and at the risk of omitting many important parts of what seems so far to be a complete and well-rounded Plan for meeting the problem. I will aim to comment upon those aspects of the Plan that continue as problems and involve apparent, or obvious, misunderstandings and contrary views The control of atomic energy represents not only a problem but a challenge-both faced by- all the peoples of the world It involves a new approach to the problems of the kinds that arise between nations, problems that have not ever been solved even by international treaties in their efforts to outlaw weapons of war. These efforts range from the Kellogg-Briand treaty to outlaw war, and its obvious failure to prevent World War II, to the interdiction by the Pope of the use of the crossbow in the days of the Crusades. Seldom in history has any industry undergone such radical and rapid change as that experienced by coal. Since 1947, when bituminous coal production reached an all-time high of 631 million tons, the industry has faced market problems not believed possible prior to the build-up of the great market demand occasioned by the wartime emergency and post-war recovery period. Subsequently, it suffered practically complete loss of the formerly huge railroad fuel market to dieselization; natural gas expansion ate into many markets; and oil took a heavy toll. Although anthracite, on the other hand, did not have a record year in 1947, it did attain a production figure of 57 million tons. Competitive forces since then have hit this fuel harder than bituminous coal. As we are aware, most prognosticators have pointed to a glowing long-range future for coal, with some forecasters estimating coal production by 1975 to be as high as 800 million tons. The largest increase in the use of coal in future years is expected to come from expansion of the industry's two largest growth markets-steel and the electric utilities. Optimists would have us believe that coal need merely bide its time to be carried to prosperity by the increased demands of these two basic customers. But the coal industry knows from bitter experience that even "assured" markets-as the railroads and domestic consumers once were-can be lost through lack of progress and lack of research. And coal's projected growth markets are not “assured.”

Meeting of May 22, 1914.-President Thayer. announced the appointment of the following Committee on Arrangements for the San Francisco meeting of 1915: Charles W. Merrill, Chairman; F. W. Bradley, Abbot A. Hanks, S. B. Christy, and H. C. Hoover. President Thayer announced the appointment of the following Committee on Organization for the Utah-Nevada Local Section: R. C. Gemmell, Chairman; C. D. Blood, Lafayette Hanchett, Ernest Gayford; Duncan MacVichie, and George W. Riter. The President of the Institute offered $100, to be known as the "President's Prize," to be used as prizes for the best papers submitted by members of the Affiliated Student Societies, to be divided as follows: First Prize, $50; Second Prize, $30; Third Prize, $20. A committee, consisting of J. F. Kemp, Chairman; W. L. Saunders, and T. T. Read, was appointed to report on the conditions to govern the award. The President announced the appointment of the Committee on Mining and Milling Methods, the personnel of which is shown on a subsequent page of this Bulletin. The following were appointed on the Advisory Committee to the U. S. Bureau of Standards, to represent the manufacture of the various non-ferrous metals as indicated: Copper, F. L. Antisell; Nickel, David H. Browne; Lead, H. O. Hofman; Aluminum, J. W. Richards; Zinc, G. C. Stone. It was voted to hold a meeting of the Institute under the auspices of, the Iron and Steel Committee, the Committee on Petroleum and Gas, and the Committee on Coal and Coke, in Pittsburg, Pa., Oct. 8, 9, and. 10, 1914.
