DURING the latter part of the year 1931, the Republic mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, at Republic, about 4 miles south of Browns-ville, Pa., was mining coal along four rib or fracture lines. One of these lines, the west butt rib line, was retreating towards a concrete-lined air shaft, 320 ft. deep, which had been sunk in 1911 for ventilation purposes. With the normal rate of mining at that time, it was expected that this rib line would pass the shaft in three or four months and the shaft would then be abandoned and allowed to cave. Realizing the opportunity presented for the study of an unusual case of ground movement, the question of conducting the study was presented by the junior author to the chairman of the Institute's committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence, Mr. George S. Rice, who presented the matter to Mr. G. H. Morse, General Manager of the Northern Mines, Republic Steel Corpora-tion, and he agreed to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in making the study, the results of which are presented in this paper. Acknowledg-ments are due to Mr. Morse for his full cooperation in this work and to Mr. G. S. Rice and Mr. J. W. Paul, both of the U. S. Lead smelting has been an important industry in Utah for many years. The first lead smelting was done, over 60 years ago, at the Rollins mine in Beaver County, by burning heaps consisting of alternate layers of wood and high-grade carbonate ore. The lead thus obtained was molded into bullets. With the development of the mines, the problem of cheaper handling of the ore became important. The only outlet for this ore was Swansea or the Atlantic Coast but to ship to either cost $150 per ton or more for treatment and handling. From 1864 to 1871, experimenting was done with blast, Scotch hearth, and reverberatory furnaces, with the blast furnace surviving as the standard plant. The first crude furnaces were circular or hexagonal in shape, and were made of adobe and stone, which quickly burned out. They were small, about 21/2 ft. in diameter, and smelted from 3 to 10 tons in 24 hr. The metal had to be tapped from the bottom of the crucible, necessitating a shut down of the furnace during this process. This procedure caused salamanders to form around the tap hole when the furnace was started again, which frequently resulted in freezing. The campaign lasted until a tap of bullion was made. The first successful plant of the crude stone type was operated in 1870. From 1870 to 1872, there was a smelter building craze in the state. During that period, about 20 furnaces were built, chiefly near the mines, and their operation was limited and sporadic. The work was then placed in the hands of trained metallurgists, who standardized on the rectangular form of furnace. In 1871, Daggett, at the Winnamuck mine in Bingham, installed water-jackets around the smelting zone of the furnaces. These furnaces were circular; the diameter at the tuyere line was 3 ft. 6 in. and at the charge floor 5 ft. 3 in. The height from tuyere line to charge floor was 14 ft., height of tuyere line above top of crucible was 3 ft. 8 in. Furnace capacity was about 14 tons per day, with a campaign of about 16 days. Nickel, fatigued in vacuum, shows intragranular crack initiation and growth at low temperatures. An increase in temperature initially prolongs fatigue life due to a more homogeneous distribution of slip. With a further temperature increase, the mode of failure undergoes a transitiotz to intergranular crack initiation with concurrent recrystallization which results in a shorter life. The transition temperature varies with bending strain and specimen purity. UNTIL recently, very little work has been done on the effect of temperature on the mechanism of fatigue and the resultant variation in fatigue life. Except for mild steel, where strain aging raises the strength at moderate temperature, fatigue lives had been shown to decrease with an increase in temperature. In their review article, Allen and Forrest' summarized the work of McCammon and Rosenberg and of Forrest and Mann on the fatigue of copper from -269" to 325°C. The fatigue life vs stress curves remained roughly parallel over this temperature range, the fatigue strength decreasing progressively with increasing temperature. When testing was done in vacuum, the present authors' found the results for nickel were different from those quoted above. Initially, the fatigue lives increased with temperature and then decreased as a grain boundary mode of failure was observed. The initial increase was attributed to a more homogeneous distribution of slip, a condition which was not as conducive to crack initiation as the bunching of slip lines observed at 20°C. Ronay, Reimann, and wood3 observed a similar change of slip line distribution in brass, tested in air, with rising temperature. Our previous observations were based on preliminary work with relatively few specimens, fatigued at comparatively low strains. To learn more about the mechanisms, the present investigation was undertaken for the purpose of studying systematically this effect over a wider range of strains and as a function of purity of the nickel. In May, 1850, the first gold from the Comstock lode was discovered in the sands near the Carson river. It had been washed down by natural agencies, through Gold Caflon, from the decomposed rock of the ledge above. Within a few weeks, the precious metal was traced more than three miles in shallow deposits along the bed of the canon, from the river to the Devil's Gate-—a narrow, rocky cleft, notable to the teamsters of a later day chiefly as the place where " Uncle Jimmy Fair" collected high tolls, and could not reduce the rates, because " this was all he had for the education of his poor children." From 1850 to 1857, a fluctuating band of miners, whose number varied from twenty to two hundred, washed the Gold Canon placers with rockers and long-toms, making four to five dollars a day each until the last-named year, when the deposits were in great measure exhausted. The chief settlement of these miners was at Johntown. During only a third of the year was the water-supply sufficient for their work. The remainder of the time they utilized in desultory prospecting of the hills and in occasional forays for supplies among the Mormons in Carson valley. In 1857, the Grosch brothers discovered the Comstock lode at some point, now unknown, in Gold Hill, but their discovery perished with them. Early in 1858, the " Pioneer Quartz Company," having located several of the small surface-veins around Silver City (whose connection with the main lode has never been definitely shown), built an arrastra, and worked some of their ore; but the returns were so small that they soon abandoned this business. In situ extraction for copper, gold and uranium, generally involves several common alternative processes and techniques. These include dump leaching, heap leaching, leaching of fractured ore in-place or bore hole mining and unit operations such as cementation, solvent extraction, ion-exchange or carbon-in-pulp. Since the metallurgical effectiveness and economics of such processes and unit operations are well established, it would be possible to select the optimum alternative for extracting either copper, gold or uranium from their ores using in situ extraction technology. In this paper, efforts have been made to provide metallurgical evaluation as well as capital and operating costs for the various processes and unit operations. Attempts have also been made to utilize the above costs in preparing feasibility studies for in situ extraction of these metals.

The processing of fine particles inevitably produces slimes. These present a dewatering problem, for which gravity thickening provides a partial or preliminary solution. The paper shows the effects of practical factors in carrying out laboratory sizing tests for thickeners. Several methods of determining thickener unit area have been compared for a lightly coagulated phosphate slurry and a highly flocculated kaolin slurry. Practical techniques of mixing and flocculant addition have significant effects on batch settling data. Pulp temperature and cylinder dimensions are very important. Errors in sizing thickeners for highly flocculated slurries by the standard methods are discussed. Such methods are suitable for less compressible slurries, however. Rules of thumb for flocculant selection are given.

Crushing development at Duval Corp.'s Sierrita concentrator in Sahuarita, Ariz., has been a continuing effort since plant startup in January 1970. The original crushing system was designed to produce 65 000 t/d (72,000 stpd) of ore. However, in the summer of 1970 the Sierrita plant was averaging only 43 000 t/d (47,000 stpd) due to coarser than expected secondary crushing plant feed, lower than design crusher operating availability, and inability to achieve design tertiary crusher power draught at an acceptable hydraulic support pressure.

INTRODUCTION AND PREVIOUS WORK IN the search to find a copper-base alloy with high strength properties, it was considered that the addition of a small amount of an age-hardening element to a binary system with useful strength properties might result in a series of alloys of theoretical and practical importance. [ ] The copper-nickel system was selected for its basic properties and chromium was added as the age-hardening element in view of the small percentage involved and its decreasing solubility with decreasing temperature. A study of the Cu-Cr binary alloys was undertaken as a preliminary investigation. However, in view of the response of these alloys to heat treatment, the scope of this phase of the investigation was widened. [ ]

A NEW milestone in the progress of photography and subsurface exploration was reached when the Chief of Army Engineers announced the development of the NX borehole camera. In obtaining continuous undistorted cylindrical color pictures of dry or water-filled borings the device surpasses all other cameras designed for photographing interior surfaces of pipes, wells, and conduits. The usefulness of the camera and the unique projector that comes with it are at once apparent. To the geological, mining, and civil engineer alike it signifies the end of guesswork with respect to underground conditions that have eluded identification by conventional core-drilling methods. To the medical profession it may well signal new progress in photo optics which could result in cylindrical color photographs supplementing the X-ray and existing photographic methods used in exploratory surgery.
