BETA brass (consisting of approximately equal atomic proportions of copper and zinc) exists as a random solid solution at high temperatures, but at low temperatures [ ] an ordered structure is stable, with the copper and zinc atoms occupying alternate sites on the body-centered-cubic lattice. On cooling, ordering commences at a temperature of 450° to 490°C., depending on the composition. The degree of ordering progressively increases at lower temperatures until it becomes virtually complete at about 100°C. The electrical resistivity of the alloy illustrates the changes clearly (Fig. I). This type of reaction has been a favored subject for study by physicists. An [ ] excellent summary of the theory is to be found in a paper by F. C. Nix and W. Shockley.1 All published data on electrical conductivity, specific heat and other properties agree in indicating that the ordering reaction in beta brass takes place so rapidly that it cannot be prevented or even retarded by quenching. The reconnaissance of the Goldfield mining-district, describecl in this paper, was made in May and June, 1905, and, though this time was too short for a complete report, the work accomplished may serve as a basis for more thorough future research. Dr. Berkey has examined the rocks collected by me, and I am using his classifications. As a result of further field-work, and Dr. Berkey's examination of the rocks, this paper is an elaboration and correction of my views expressed in the Gold-$elm Sun, May 12, 1905. The sketch-map, Fig. 1, illustrates the geology of the Goldfield mining-district. Goldfield is an eruptive complex, consisting of alaskite (hinary granite), hornblende-andesite, hornblende-dacite, rhyolite, pyroxene-andesite, pyroxene-dacite (sometimes containing a small quantity of olivine), quartz-felsite, olivine-pyroxene-ande-site, and basalt. Considering this list to be arranged in the order of eruption, the age-sequence of the rocks conforms to Richthofen's law, formulated in 1868. From his observations in Europe and America, propylite, andesite, trachyte, rhyolite and basalt, occurring together, succeed one another. In a general way, the medium and the more acidic rocks precede the most basic—a result supposed by some to hare arisen from their position beneath the. surface, and due to a rude stratification by gravity in the original cooling magma during the older history of the earth, or to the same differentiation occurring during a quiescent (molten ?) period preceding eruption, being aided by the ease with which acidic rocks, mixed with water vapors, become fusible. In a recent review of the field of plastic deforrnation of metal single crystals, Maddin and chenl indicated the need for systematic investigations of the crystallography of the slip process with special attention to: a) The effect of the orientation of a crystal on the appearance of slip lines, b) The effect of high temperatures on the slip systems of aluminum, c) The effect of strain rate on the crystallography of slip. The present paper deals with the effect of temperature and strain rate on the mechanism of deformation of aluminum single crystals similarly oriented for single and duplex slip. In the present number of Mining and Metallurgy, issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Institute, it appears appropriate to chronicle a few of the interesting incidents respecting its early life. We are fortunate in being able to cull the following notes from unpublished manuscripts of Doctor Raymond and Doctor Drinker, than whom no other members could have written with greater exactness and fidelity. THE seventh decade of the 19th century may be said to have marked an. era in the history of the world. Industrially and .commercially it was marked by the wide application and utilization of discoveries already made, which came to their full effect at this period in steamships, railways, telegraph and cable lines; the standardization of parts in machines, from watches to locomotives; the use of &apos;dynamite, antiseptic surgery, the open-hearth steel process, the compressed-air rock-drill, the electric generator, and the Gatling gun. Through the opening of the Suez canal in 1870 the maritime trade of the world was revolutionized, sailing vessels were supplanted by steamers, while ocean cables and ocean "tramps" brought about far more rapid movement of commerce than had before been experienced. Politically, this period was marked by the sudden birth of the German empire and the beginning of that intensive internal development of the national resources of that empire in preparation for colonial extension and war, the amazing result of which has been made evident by the recent world conflict. Early in 1942 National Lead Co. was requested by the War Production Board to construct and operate a plant for the Government to produce magnesium by the ferrosilicon process which had been developed by Dr. E. M. Pidgeon in the laboratories of the Canadian National Research Council. A contract with the Defense PlantCorporation was concluded in May 1942 and Magnesium Reduction Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of National Lead Co., was formed to carry out this project. The capacity of the plant was rated at I0,000,000 lb. of magnesium per year, equivalent to an average production of about 14 tons per day. The Process The process, in brief, is as follows: The raw materials are dolomite and ferro-silicon, 75 per cent grade. The dolomite is calcined, the calcine and ferrosilicon are ground and mixed and the mixture is briquetted. The briquets are charged into tubular retorts of chrome-nickel steel set horizontally in a furnace with the open ends projecting outside the front wall. The retorts are then closed and evacuated. Magnesium is liberated according to then reaction 2(MgOl CaO) + Si = 2Mg + zCaO, Si% It is distilled from the charge and con- densed on a removable sleeve in the throat of the retort. Sodium and potassium, if present, are also liberated, distilled and condensed on a "sodium condenser" in the end of the retort. At the expiration of the distillation period the retorts are discharged and the cycle of operations is repeated. For the rated daily capacity of 14 tons of magnesium there are required approximately 170 tons of dolomite, equivalent to about 85 tons of calcine, and 16.5 tons of ferrosilicon. The retort residue, a bulky powder which at present is waste, amounts to about 87 tons. Choosing the Site The investigation to select the location of the plant was conducted by the Research Laboratories of National Lead Co. This work included geologic and economic surveys of a number of districts, examination of dolomite samples by chemical, spectrographic and petrographic methods and large-scale tests of dolomite from several of the more promising localities. in the last-named tests 2-ton samples were put through the ferrosilicon process in the pilot plant of the Canadian National Research Council, under the guidance of Dr. Pidgeon. The conclusions drawn from the investigation, in regard to the quality of dolomite to be used in the ferrosilicon process, were: First, the dolomite should contain not less than 21 per cent MgO and not more than 2 per cent acid-insoluble material. In 1914, the officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., faced with the problem of introducing new methods to increase production in the old and nearly depleted pools of Venango County, became interested in the Smith-Dunn (Marietta) process which was at that time being tried out in southeastern Ohio and which was already yielding very encouraging results. A license to use the process in Pennsylvania was secured from the owners of the patents. These patents were later declared invalid. The method was first used in Pennsylvania on a property consisting of about 434 acres, of which 300 are productive, at Hamilton Corners, 15 miles northwest of Oil City, in Cherry Tree and Oakland Townships, Venango County. The producing horizon is the First Sand of the Venango Group. A small oil pool was opened up in this vicinity in 1904. By July, 1916, when the compressed air was first introduced to restore pressure, the production had dropped to a point where it was no longer possible to continue profitable operation. From that time until March, 1927, over 100,000 bbl. of oil have been recovered from the tract. The property is being operated at present by the Brundred Oil Corpn. and LUX. The 1926 production, amounting to 10,650 bbl., was only 400 bbl. short of the maximum reached during any year of the 10-year period that the process has been in operation. Inasmuch as the Hamilton Corners pool is the first one in Pennsylvania in which the Marietta process was tried out, and the one in which it has been longest in continuous operation, considerable interest attaches to the results obtained. Through the courtesy of H. D. Brown and W. J. Brundred, officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., all their data on this operation were made available to the writer in connection with an investigation of rejuvenation methods in the State for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. IN January, 1926, the writer began a study of the commercial value of beryllium in its relation to copper. The purpose of the investigation was not to make a mere laboratory study of the characteristics of beryllium-copper alloys, but to determine under mill conditions the behavior of copper when alloyed with beryllium and when other metals were added to such alloys; in other words, it was considered important to know whether the alloy bars could be hot-rolled or cold-worked, and what limits in composition would have to be established for these two methods of working. Consequently, more stress has been placed on the practical application of the alloys in engineering and commercial use than on a discussion of the metallography of the specimens examined, although this part of the matter has not been entirely neglected. Credit should be first given to G. Oesterheld,1 who, in 1916, published the copper-beryllium equilibrium diagram. Fig. 1 has been copied from the original article with the simple substitution of English words. It will be noted from Fig. 1 that alpha solid solutions are formed, up to about 1.5 per cent. Be (10.5 atom.). The freezing-point curve, after falling from 4.2 per cent. Be (23.5 atom.), enters into a very complicated form over the entire beta region. There is a possible compound, Cu2Be, at about 6.5 per cent. Be (32.3 atom.). The pure gamma range extends from 11.2 to 12.2 per cent. Be. (46.5 to 49 atom.), after which the liquidus rises rapidly to 30 per cent. Be. (75 atom.). The delta solution extends from 25 per cent. to an unknown percentage of beryllium. There is a eutectoid point at 575" C., extending from 1.5 to 11.2 per cent. Be., the maximum time interval of which occurs at 6 per cent. Be. Below this line the beta solution is described as breaking up into alpha and gamma. Microscopically, the eutectiferous alloy thus formed closely resembles pearlite, and requires a high magnification for its resolution.

IN October, 1925, J. R. Finlay delivered an address entitled, "The Future Price of Lead." Lead was then selling at 8.85c. and Mr. Finlay and most of the rest of us were concerned about the shortage. Now, a little more than six years after, lead is selling for 3.55c., and nobody is worrying about the difficulty of getting plenty of it. For 1931 the U. S. G. S. reports United States produc¬tion as 390,000 tons of recoverable lead in ore. Our estimate is slightly higher than this; nearer 400,000 tons. This is the smallest production since 1911 and 1912, but in spite of this, stocks for the year-have increased nearly 50,000 tons. Our estimate for the production outside the United States is 1,120,000 tons, or more than double the production of either 1920 or 1921, and 30 per cent more than in 1913. Stocks abroad probably have not increased more than stocks in the United States. In other words, foreign consumption is double what it was in 1.920-21, whereas domestic consumption is substantially less. It looks as if Mr. Krueger, president of the Swedish match trust, was right when he said that "This country had better stop worrying about Europe and think a little bit more about its own affairs."

Geophysical methods of prospecting taken as a whole do not seem to offer much promise to a young man planning to enter them in the future. They have come to stay, to be sure, and they will continue in at least moderate use for a long time. Domestic use of those methods presumably is at a maximum at the present time. Geophysical pros-pecting is expensive; the effects of the law of diminishing returns in efficiency in finding prospects can already, be recognized. Small oil companies, independent oil operators, and royalty buyers have been doing much geophysical work. But in face of the increasing costs of discovery of prospects and in face of the probably decreasing favorability of the prospects discovered, I expect to see a sharp drop in their use of geo-physics within the next 10 years. The major oil companies and the larger small oil companies will continue to use geophysics indefinitely, but it seems doubtful whether the very extensive domestic campaigns of a few companies will be maintained for many years, certainly not for 10 years. The use of the geophysical methods in foreign countries has not yet reached its peak, and probaby will continue to increase for several years. That peak level of activity will probably be held for 10 years, although the site of maximum activity will shift from country to country; by the end of 25 years from now, I should expect the foreign use of the methods to have leveled off to one-fourth to one-half the peak level. Foreign service in geophysics does not seem to offer an attractive career, except for men of exceptional disposition. Young men just out of college, who are willing and who can afford to spend three or four years having a fling at adventure before settling down, will find it attractive, but when their tour of foreign service is over, they probably will have harder work finding a job than when they were seniors, and their foreign experience will count for little, except for further foreign service. A few men, mainly the higher men, will have headquarters at civilized or semi-civilized cities and towns or at permanent oil-company towns, and can

The effects of many alloying eletnents on the acticity coefficient of sulfur in liquid iron have-been studied by the equilibriutn in the reaction Sfin Fe) + Hz = HzS at 1550°C&apos;. Results are expressed in terms of a concentration variable for a nonmetallic or for a substitutional metallic solute. Activity coefficient of sulfur, defined as increased by B, Al, C, Si, Ge, Sn, P, As, Sb, Mo, W, Co, and PI. It is decreased by Cu,Au, Ti. Zr, V, h&apos;b, Ta, Cr, ,23n, and Ni. Irulues oj. the interaction coejficient 0i = 6 In are labulated. The same interactions are expressed also in terms of atom fraction and of weight percent. The thermodynamic properties of sulfur in liquid iron have been fairly well established. Our recent paper1 reported new determinations of activity coefficient up an atom fraction of 0.12 and equations based on a careful review of all published data. The effects of alloying elements on the activity of sulfur have been studied by several investigators,2"11 especially by Morris and Williams for silicon,&apos; by Morris and Buehl for carbon,~ and by Sherman and Chipman for manganese. phosphorus, and al~minum.~ However, the effects of some important alloying elements remain to be determined. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of many alloying elements on the activity of sulfur in Fe-S-j ternary systems. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD This study was based on experimental determination of equilibrium in the reaction at 1550°C: The same apparatus and procedure as described in our previous paper have been retained, and the same corrections were applied for dissociation of H2S. The alumina crucibles used in the experiments consisted of four separate compartments. In a given experimental run. kach of three alumina crucibles held four different samples of about 3 g each which reached equilibrium in the same gas atmosphere and temperature. The charges were made up of electrolytic iron, pure iron sulfide, and desired alloying elements, which were pure metal or master alloys made in the laboratory. The weighed samples were held for 4 to 12 hr in the prepared atmosphere at 1550°C. They were then low- ered to be cooled as quickly as possible. The quenched metal beads were crushed to avoid the errors of segregation in the ingot. The sulfur content was determined gravimetrically and alloy content by appropriate chemical analysis. CALCULATIONS The apparent equilibrium constants of Eq. [I] are expressed as follows from the corrected gas ratios and sulfur concentrations: The term K" is the observed equilibrium constant in any given ternary solution, K&apos; is the value for the Fe-S binary solution. and the limiting value of K&apos; in the infinitely dilute solution is designated by K, which is the true equilibrium constant in Eq. [I]. In the thermodynamic treatment of nonmetallic elements in a metallic solution, it has been suggested1&apos; that the lattice ratio has certain advantages over other variables to express the concentration of solute. In interstitial solid solutions the lattice ratio zj is proportional to the ratio of filled interstitial sites to those which remain unfilled. The equations derived for the activity of the solute using zj as the concentration variable are found also to be applicable to liquid solutions containing nonmetallic solutes when the nonmetal is treated as if it were interstitial. For this purpose we adopt the following definitions: The quantity vj which is negative for interstitial solutes is taken as -1 for nonmetallic and +1 for metallic solutes. For purposes of calculation however ; j may be assigned a value which results in a linear relation such as shown in Figs. 1 to 15. The activity coefficient of sulfur, Qs, and equilibrium constant. AMONG the large number of deep mines in the world there are several which do not differ much in depth. The St. John del Rey mine, in Brazil, has reached a vertical depth of 6726 ft. below the top of its shaft; miners enter it, however, through an adit which intersects the shaft 324 ft. below its top, wherefore it might be said that the mine is really only 6400 ft. deep. In the Kolar gold field of India there are a number of deep shafts, one of which reaches to a vertical depth of 6140 ft. below surface. In South Africa also there are a number of deep shafts, the Village Deep being 6100 ft. early in 1921. The City Deep, Ltd., proposes to sink to a depth of 7000 ft. but pre-sumably by the time it does so the St. John del Rey will be deeper than that, since it has been increasing in depth at an average rate of about 150 ft. per year. The deepest shaft in the United States, the Tamarack No. 5, although it is only 5308 ft. deep, actually approaches nearer to the center of the earth (4100 ft. below sea level, as against 3958 ft. , at St. John del Rey). The deepest workings in the Calumet & Hecla go down to 4600 ft. below sea level. The St. John del Rey is not only the deepest, mine in the world, but it also is worked by the oldest registered English mining company, which was organ-ized in 1830 to work a mine at a considerable dis-tance from this one. That mine proved unprofitable, and in 1837 operations were transferred to the. deposit now under discussion, where operations have been prac-tically continuous ever since.

FLUID jet mills, employing a compressible fluid to grind materials to the subsieve range, was developed in the early 1930&apos;s, and the subsequent acceptance of these units was the result of their ability to pulverize solids that, because of physical properties, could not be processed by other attrition methods, such as ball, pebble, and hammer mills. Also, the fluid energy pulverizer is the only grinding device that will discharge continuously a 5-micron or smaller product. Simultaneous ultra-fine grinding and classification is the widest application of this unit. Jet mills may be used to advantage to reduce particle size of solids suspended in liquids, for coating one material with another, and effecting chemical reactions and changes in physical characteristics other than a reduction in size. Materials that can be processed by this grinding method include nonmetallic and metallic minerals, ores, metals, pigments, insecticides, fungicides, pharmaceuticals, plastics, dyes, and numerous other organic and inorganic products. Grinding principles utilized in the fluid mills available on the market are basically the same, the major difference being in the shape of the, grinding and classification chamber. Grinding in fluid jet pulverizers is accomplished by collisions between particles of the material being ground with the energy being supplied by compressed fluids entering the grinding chamber at high velocities. The "Micronizer" is a fluid energy mill employing a relatively flat cylindrical grinding chamber. Fig. 1 shows general construction details. The mill shown is equipped with a venturi type feeder using a compressed fluid to inject the feed into the grinding chamber. The energy consumed in forcing the feed into the grinding chamber against the mill pressure is, in some cases, as much as 40 pct of the total required for processing. Recent improvements, using a compression screw feeder as shown in Fig. 2, can reduce this to 1 or 2 pct of the total energy requirements. Grinding Grinding, as carried out in the. Micronizer involves the action of gaseous jets emerging from nozzles located in the peripheral wall of the grinding chamber. The axes, of the jets are tangential to a circle of smaller diameter than the grinding chamber as is shown in Fig. 1, and the gases entering the chamber maintain a high rotational velocity. The feed introduced into the mill is accelerated by the rotating gases and is thrown to the outside where a portion, coming in the zone of action of a nozzle, is further accelerated tangentially and inward. Violent collisions occur between the particles so accelerated and other particles circulating at a slower rate in a thin band near the periphery. It is estimated over 90 pct of the reduction in Micronizers occur as a result of impact within a fraction of an inch of the orifice. IN STUDYING Utah as a lead producing state one is immediately confronted by the fact that few, if any, of the ores of the state are valued for their lead contents alone. More correctly the ores from which this metal is recovered are characterized as silver lead. Even then the whole story is not told for many of these ores carry also gold, copper, zinc, bismuth, antimony, arsenic, tellurium, and other metals. It becomes apparent, therefore, that the production of lead i11 Utah is influenced by many factors. For example, i11 the early part of 1923 there was a marked increase in the production of the lead by reason of the efforts made by silver mines to produce as much silver as possible before the termination of purchases under the Pittinan Act in June, 1923. As nearly all silver ores carried more or less lead the production of that metal was increased with the increase in silver production. Very few, if any, ores of the State are mined for their lead contents alone. Important as Utah&apos;s contribution to the lead output of the country is nevertheless it is bound up to some extent with the production of gold, silver and copper.

Discussion of the paper of Carl Scholz, published in Bi-monthly Bulletin, No. 22, July, 1908, pp. 551 to 559. HOWARD N. EAVENSON, Gary, W. Va. (communication to the Secretary*) :-For some time before the publication of Mr. Scholz&apos;s paper, I had been collecting data bearing upon its subject, and I now take pleasure in presenting my results to the Institute in the form of a discussion. It has long been a matter of common opinion among mining-men that mice-explosions are, more frequent during the colder, or winter months, than during the warmer ones, and it is a matter of common knowledge among them that the air-ways and road-ways in most mines are much drier and are more in¬clined to be dusty during the winter than during the summer. In many mines, places which are wet and sloppy in the summer are dry and sometimes dusty during the winter. These changes, of course, can only be due to atmospheric conditions, and are caused by differences in temperature and humidity. Until recently, however, very little attention has been paid to the part that atmospheric conditions may play in mine-explosions, or, rather, to the effect they may have in rendering mine-conditions peculiarly dangerous, and in spreading and rendering more disastrous the effects of what would otherwise probably have been .small explosions. To show the difference in mine-conditions during sunnier .and winter months, I have tabulated in Table I. the results of 24 observations of hygrometric conditions in several different mines at different times of the year. Mines Nos. 1, 2, and 6 are located in the Pocahontas.coal -region, in McDowell couuty, W.Va., the first one being a shaft-mine shaft mine and the others drift. Mines 1A and 2A are drift-mines located in Logan county, W. Va. All of these are mines of fair size, but none of them has been in operation more than six years,

A system of three new field instruments has been developed to measure, in situ, the three basic classes of geomechanical parameters: material properties, stress state, and creep deformation. The significance of this development is that it represents a successful adaptation of recent computer technology to underground rock mechanics work, opening up new possibilities in underground mining methods. The system was developed to meet the application requirements of the stress control method of mining, a method which is based on the actual geomechanical conditions of the underground, rather than upon conventional linear-elastic, idealizations of ground conditions. These instruments enable in situ measurement not only of elastic, but also post-elastic, yielding, and failure conditions of geological materials, establishing the stress control method on a truly scientific foundation. In order to evaluate the present status of this field instrumentation system, case examples of underground mine openings designed with the stress control method are reviewed and analyzed, in terms of the effectiveness of the three instruments for informing and guiding the site-specific application of stress control design.

This is the more appropriate, since Mr. Morse has mentioned me by name, and has cited my "Review of the Russell Process,"* so that silence on my part might be taken as indicating an assent which I cannot give. On the first page of his paper Mr. Morse says that the " goingback " of chlorination was " the only difficulty encountered at Aspen," and adds that he has " never seen any explanation " of the cause. The rates of oxidation of tungsten have been determined at temperatures between 1320" and 3170°C and oxygen pressures to 1 amn using a surface -recession measurement technique. Above approximately 2000°C and 10-6 atm the rate is independent of temperature and can be calculated from gas collision theory assuming a constant reaction probability, e, of 0.06. Oxygen molecules react at surface sites where oxygen atoms have previously chemisorbed. This provides a direct pressure dependence at low pressures but at high pressures tungsten oxide molecule s form an adjacent gas boundary layer which lowers the PO2 at the tungsten surface. A correction for this effect using free-convection theory fits the rate data over the entire oxygen-pressure range from 10-8 to 1 atrn as well as data using O2-A mixtures. Below 10-6 atrn and above 2000°C, e decreases with increasing temperature because of desorption of oxygen atoms. Below 2000°C the rate decreases with decreasing temperature at all oxygen pressures following an apparent activation energy of 42 kcal per mole and depending on (Po2)n with n varying between 0.55 and 0.80. MOST of the previous tungsten oxidation studies have employed gravimetric methods and have been limited to temperatures below 1000°C where the weight loss associated with evaporation of tungsten oxides is negligible compared with the weight gain from oxidation.&apos; At higher temperatures, oxygen-consumption rates have been determined from pressure measurements, usually at constant flow rates, by Langmuir,2 Eisinger,3 Becker, Becker, and Brandes,4 and Anderson.5 The sensitivity of this method decreases with increasing pressure and, with the exception of Langmuir&apos;s work, these investigations were confined to pressures below 10-6 atm. Above approximately 1300°C, depending on the oxygen pressure, the rate of oxide evaporation is greater than the oxide-formation rate and the recession of the tungsten surface can be measured optically without interference from an oxide layer. This was first done by Perkins and crooks6 who heated tungsten rods in air pressures from 1 to 40 torr at temperatures between 1300" and 3000°C. The present investigation of the oxidation kinetics of tungsten at high temperatures emphasizes oxygen pressures from 10-6 to 1 atm. This is the range of interest for earth atmosphere re-entry applications of tungsten for which little data were previously available. APPARATUS The apparatus is a modification of the type used by Perkins and crooks.&apos; Ground tungsten seal rods, 6 in. long by 0.125 in. diam, were mounted vertically between two water-cooled electrodes, one fixed and the other having free vertical travel. The movable counter-weighted electrode is prevented from undergoing horizontal displacement by three sets of runners mounted at 120-deg intervals. Electrical contact is made by means of a water-cooled mercury pool. A 24-in. vacuum bell jar having a volume of approximately 267 liters was used as the reaction chamber with the sample holder mounted in the middle of the chamber. Power was supplied from an 800-amp dc variable power supply. Temperature readings were made by means of a Latronics automatic two-color recording pyrometer. With this instrument, corrections for emissivity are not necessary provided the spectral emissivi-ties at two closely spaced wavelengths are equal. Supporting measurements were made with a micro-optical pyrometer corrected for emissivity of bare tungsten and window absorptivity. The micro-optical pyrometer was calibrated against a National Bureau of Standards calibrated tungsten lamp and both pyrometers were periodically checked against the melting points of tungsten and molybdenum using the oxidation apparatus. Above 10-6 atm, pressures were measured with an Alphatron gage calibrated against a McCleod gage. At 10-6 atm, a hot-filament ionization gage was employed. A magnified image of the self-illuminated tungsten rod was formed using a 360-mm objective lens mounted outside the bell jar. When the experiment exceeded 1 hr, the image was focused on a ground-glass plate about 10 ft from the tungsten rod at about X8 and the recession of the thickness of this image was monitored with a Gaertner cathe-tometer. When faster rates were encountered, a 35-mm time-lapse cinecamera with a telephoto lens and bellows extension was substituted for the ground-glass plate and cathetometer. Diameter recession rates were determined from the photograph image projected on the screen of an analytical film reader. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE After installing the rod in the apparatus and cleaning it with acetone, the system was evacuated to 5 1 x 10-5 torr. Before oxygen was introduced,

The oxidation kinetics of spherical pellets of zinc sulfide made from Santander concentrates were studied using a thermogravimetric technique. The experiments covered a temperature range-. of 740" to 102O°C, 0-N mixtures varying from 20 to LOO pct O2, and pellet diameters between 0.4 and 1.6 cm. Mathematical models were formulated to Predict the reaction rate on the assumption that a single transport or interface reaction step was rate -controlling. Analysis of the data indicated that the process of oxidation was predominantly controlled by transport through the zinc oxide reaction-Product layer. ROASTING processes, which are reactions between solids and gases, are very important because they are employed in the production of a number of basic metals. These processes are highly complicated, and one needs to consider the transport phenomena of heat and mass between the solids and gases in addition to the kinetics of various chemical reactions involved. Because of such complications there is a lack of knowledge concerning the rate-limiting factors, which may strongly depend on temperature, particle size, gas composition, and solid structure. The oxidation of zinc sulfide, which is of commercial importance in zinc production, falls into this class of reactions. The major goal of this work was to elucidate the roles played by different process variables, such as reaction temperature, gas composition, pellet size, and pellet porosity, on the kinetics of oxidation of single pellets of zinc sulfide. Roasting of zinc sulfide single particles has been a subject of both experimental and theoretical investigations.&apos;-&apos; The reaction is exothermic and may be considered to be irreversible. Such a reaction has been found to proceed in a topochemical manner. In other words, as the reaction proceeds, a progressively thicker outer shell of zinc oxide is formed, while the inner core of unreacted sulfide decreases. It has been found experimentally, both in the present work and in the previous investigations,1-9 that the particle retains its original dimensions and the process requires transport of gaseous oxygen across the porous product layer for continued reaction. The reaction may be represented by ZnS(s) + 3/2 O2(g) = ZnO(s) + SO2(g) [1] The solid product considered here is only zinc oxide, since the diffraction patterns of zinc sulfide pellets oxidized partially at &apos;798" and 960°C showed K. This depicts a partially oxidized sphere of zinc sulfide in a gas stream surrounded by a laminar film of gas. The spherical sample of zinc sulfide of unchanging external radius r0 is suspended in a flowing gas stream of total pressure PT and composition specified by the partial pressures of the individual components. Partial pressures of the gaseous species in the bulk gas phase, at the exterior surface of the pellet, at the ZnS/ZnO interface, and at equilibrium for Reaction [I] are identified by the superscripts b, o, i, and eq, respectively. The overall reaction involves the following ~te~s:&apos;~&apos;~&apos; Step 1. Transfer of reactant gas (oxygen) from the bulk gas stream across the gas boundary layer to the exterior surface of the pellet and the reverse transfer of the product gas (sulfur dioxide). Step 2. Diffusion and bulk flow of oxygen from the pellet surface through the product shell (ZnO) onto the ZnS/ZnO interface and the reverse transfer of sulfur dioxide. Step 3. Union Carbide began looking seriously at heap leaching in 1971. At that time some 1.6 million tons of mineral averaging 0.40 kg U308 /t) (0.80 lb U308) were stockpiled at various sites around the Gas Hills, Wyoming, uranium facility. Several alternatives for economically exploiting these reserves were considered and heap leaching seemed the most attractive. At the time, Western Nuclear Inc. was operating a heap leaching project nearby in which the low-grade ore was leached with sulfuric acid, the product liquor treated in an on site solvent extraction circuit, and the stripped product liquor re-acidified and recycled. The operators were most generous in allowing us to visit their site and in answering our questions. They were also helpful in discussing the problems associated with heap leaching. Their experience confirmed our belief that it was possible to operate a heap leach profitably on material too low grade for conventional milling.
