MAGNESIUM is an exceedingly strategic material but the importance of its production at the time this war started was not realized. Our Government then suddenly became much alive to the need of a tremendous increase in magnesium output, and became a participator in the industry. In this paper an attempt will be made to given an over-all picture of the industry as it has been, and is being, developed. The present war is giving a great acceleration to the use of lighter metals. Development of facilities for production of great tonnages of aluminum and magnesium is bound to bring about some interesting changes in later peace times because costs will be low and production capacities high. As our knowledge of the metallurgy of magnesium alloys increases, this metal will become of vital peacetime importance and will be used in ways we do not now imagine. Household refrigerators, furniture, automobiles, even houses will all be lightened through the use of magnesium.

The Tooele plant of the Internationa1 Smelting & Refining Co. is situated at the mouth of Pine canyon, Tooele county, Utah. It is connected with the main line of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad by the Tooele Valley railway, and is about 7 miles from Tooele Junction. Fig. 1 is a general view of the plant. The copper plant has been in operation since July, 1910, arid the first blast furnace at the lead plant was blown in on Feb. 29, 1912. The location of the plant was selected on sloping ground with the idea of using gravity to the fullest extent and thus keeping labor at a minimum. Practically the entire plant is constructed of steel, reinforced concrete, and brick. Bingham ores, both lead and copper, are received over the Utah Consolidated Aerial Tramway. FROM the time of its establishment in 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority has been active in the field of phosphates. Under the T.V.A. Act it has a broad Congressional mandate to guide a unified development of the resources of the region for the long-range benefit of the people. As one phase of this function, it is directed to co-operate with farmers in the experimental large-scale use of improved fertilizers and development of better fertilizer practices. Following careful study, it was concluded that the objectives of this phase could best be attained by soil rebuilding through the use of phosphatic fertilizer and lime in an improved farm management sys- tem. This activity was launched through a program of test and demonstration on farms and simultaneous technical investigations to develop new and improved phosphatic fertilizers. Phosphorus has since become a keystone of the Authority's resource development and conservation program. Human effort is being conserved by phosphate utilization on the farm, and mineral conservation has been promoted by technical developments in phosphate mining and manufacturing operations.

It is convenient to have a consistent system of notation that will allow the representation of the entire range of complex stresses from hydrostatic compression to hydrostatic tension on plastic flow in a single diagram. Such a system is provided by making use of the fact that any complex stress system can be resolved into a hydrostatic tension or compression and a pure shear. Consider a stress system having the principal stresses This system can be resolved into a new system consisting of the three components and three pure shears. If Sm is positive, the net stress effect is hydrostatic tension; if it is negative, the effect is hydrostatic compression. In order to produce a systematic notation, a quantity that will be referred to as the "triaxial ratio" will be defined by the equation _ Sm Tr = Sm - Sm is given by Eq. The zone-melting process in which redistribution of solute in a solid bar is effected by the passage of a molten zone is considered mathematically. Simple approximate techniques are developed for computing the manner in which redistribution occurs as molten zones continue to pass. The introduction of the "zone-melting flux" provides valuable insight into the nature of the phenomenon, as well as a central mathematical theme in terms of which the process can be discussed. Curves are presented for typical and general cases. AN extremely efficient purification technique was described recently by Pfann.1 Known as zone refining, it consisted of the slow passage of a series of molten zones, produced by external heaters, through a long solid ingot of the substance to be purified. Equations were given for the maximum separation attainable, and a numerical computation method was described for obtaining the concentration in the ingot after a given number of zone passes. The present paper offers an interpretation of the physical nature of zone melting in terms of a transport process in which formal diffusive and convec-tive flows occur. This interpretation, in addition to providing insight into the physical nature of the process, also provides a basis for its mathematical treatment. From this basis, useful equations are developed for the solute concentration in the ingot as a function of the number of zone passes. These are applicable particularly where large numbers of passes are necessary and where numerical computational methods might be laborious. All considerations will deal with the limiting form of the process, described by Pfann,' in which: 1—Diffusion in the solid is considered negligible. 2—Mixing in the liquid is supposed, complete. 3—The distribution coefficient, k, measuring the ratio (at equilibrium) of solute concentration in the solid to that in the liquid is supposed, independent of composition. In general, this paper will be concerned with a bar of uniform (actually unit) cross section, ex- tending in the x-direction from x = 0 to x = L, where L may be infinite. Zone melting is a transport process, and as such must admit of interpretation in terms of a flux of transported quantity. However, the progress of operation is not measured in units of time but in terms of the number of completed zone passes. Consequently, the zone-melting flux will be a rate, per unit pass, rather than per unit time. The description of this flux and the examination of its properties is given below. IN 1953, a method for filtering a liquid phase from solid phases while in equilibrium at elevated temperatures was devised at the Alcoa Aluminum Research Laboratories. Since then, it has been applied to the investigation of liquid-solid equilibrium in metallic systems. In application, the method simplifies the centrifuge filt.ration procedure as developed by Scheil and described by Gebhardt Fig. 1 shows a sketch of the filtering apparatus located within a thermal analysis furnace. It consists of a stainless steel filter crucible A, into the bottom of which a porous carbon filter disk B, 1 3/4 in. diam by 1/4 in. thick, is sealed to the shoulder and rim with carbonaceous cement. The base of the filter crucible, machined to an angle, fits into a tapered seat at the mouth of a stainless steel vacuum chamber C. A connecting tube from the vacuum chamber to a vacuum line also serves as a means for supporting the apparatus from the base of the furnace. An alundum crucible D of 25 ml capacity is placed with- in the vacuum chamber below the filter for collecting the filtrate. Two thermocouples E, in stainless steel protection tubes, which extend from 1/16 to in. above the center of the filter, are mounted on the rim of the filter crucible. One thermocouple is used in differential connection with the furnace control thermocouple to regulate rates of heating and cooling. The other serves as a means for recording the temperature of the alloy prior to filtering. A suitable mold coating is used on exposed surfaces of stainless steel parts to guard against attack upon these parts as well as to avoid contamination of the alloy samples. A mold wash prepared from precipitated CaCO, is suitable for aluminum alloys. The porous carbon for the filter disks and the carbonaceous cement, grade 200 (graphite base), were obtained from the National Carbon Co. Porous car-bon, grade Nos. 10 to 60, has been employed. Grade No. 40, however, appeared to give the optimum advantages in operation. In operation, an alloy sample is remelted and heated to about 50°C above its liquidus temperature. At the same time, the filter apparatus is preheated to about the same temperature. The alloy then is cast into the filter crucible.

Increasing urbanization and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This means expanded surface mining and despoiled land near population centers. Highly competitive land use demands justify serious consideration of premining planning for multiple land use and reclamation concurrent with mining. 1-5 Formulating solutions to environmentally and economically sound uses requires a comprehensive approach based on properties of the natural resource base--geology, soils, and water. A study of sand and gravel mining within Pleistocene-Holocene fluvial deposits in Colorado County. Texas [(Fig. 1)] illustrates how physical limitations imposed by the resource base are determined.6,7 Data from drillers, logs of water wells, test boreholes, field observations, and laboratory analyses are used to evaluate these physical controls. Knowledge of the thickness and composition of overburden aids in developing optimum reclamation and revegetation plans. Most of the overburden in the study area [(Fig. 2, 3)] is a clayey mud with variable amounts of silt and fine sand. A comparative textural analysis of overburden and native soil is used to assess changes incurred by mining and for evaluating other physical characteristics, e.g., ability to support crops, permeability. and shrink-swell potential. Textures are correlated with soil types found in the area [(Table 1)] to get an approximation of probable surface properties expected from these mined materials. Results of textural analyses [(Table 2)] indicate that separating topsoils from overburden during mining is not necessary because the range of overburden textures is about that of native soils. However, more data is needed on nutrient deficiencies to evaluate fertilizer requirements for successful revegetation.*6

INTRODUCTION Detonations of high explosives in soil and rock have been used frequently in civil engineering applications. Of particular interest in recent years has been the development of test methods to simulate the desired blast and shock environments for the testing of protective structures. The United States Air Force, in particular, the Air Force Weapons Laboratory, in conjunction with the Defense Atomic Support Agency, has in recent years, developed special technology for simulation testing of protective structures in soil and rock media. Such a technology, although initially developed for military applications, is rapidly finding its way into civil applications. One of the major problems in the design of the simulation test is the correct prediction of ground motion induced by the detonation of high explosives. This paper presents a useful prediction method which is developed specifically for ground motion in rock that is induced by the detonation of a buried planar array of explosive columns (See Figure 1). The technique of simulating shock environment using such an array is called the Direct Induced High Explosive Simulation Tech- nique (DIHEST). Normally, each shot hole may contain canisters of ammonium nitrate positioned at various depths, or a slurry explosive with detonators positioned along its length (See Figure 1). The depth and width of the array, the spacing of shot holes, the spacing of detonators, the degree of containment, and the charge weight are the variables which govern the induced ground motion

It has been found that cold work and annealing treatments greatly retard subsequent grain growth and re-crystallization in thoria-dispersed nickel and NiCr. It is suggested that this is due to cavities which form at the particle-matrix interface durilzg cold work. Some of' the cavities formed are stable at elevated temperatures and prevent the mouement of large-angle grain boundaries. The movement of these boundaries at elevated temperatures is known to start recrystal-lization and when they are pinned by voids recrystal-lization is made more difficult. TD Nichro,me had a maximun resistance to recrystallization when the initial structure was coarse-grained and had a low dislocation density. A precipitation reaction occurred between 700° and 1200° F in cold-worked TD Nichrome. It has been shown by Grant and his coworkers1-3 that a large part of the strength of dispersion-hardened materials is a result of the cold-worked structure produced during fabrication. In a comparison of the strength of cold-worked copper with and without an oxide dispersion, Grant4 has demonstrated that there is little difference in strength at room temperature. The function of the dispersion is essentially to maintain the cold-worked structure at higher temperatures than is possible in the base material. The dispersion accomplishes this by making recrystallization more difficult. The mechanism by which this is achieved is discussed in this paper. The fabrication history of the material has been found to greatly influence recrystallization behavior and this aspect is discussed in some detail. I) MATERIAL Three different thoria-dispersed materials were examined. 1) DuPont 2 pet thoria-dispersed nickel (TDNi) in 0.050-in. seeet. Lipson1 has recently presented a technical note wherein theoretical considerations were used to demonstrate. that the adsorption us saturation relation for a linear absorption method is not necessarily a single valued function of saturation.1 It was concluded that the absorption us saturation relationship is subject to the same hysteretic effect as is the flow behavior between the drainage and imbibition systems. It is the purpose of this note to show, by experimental results, that for the manner in which fluids are distributed in porous materials during fluid flow, the relative X-ray absorption us saturation relationship is single-valued regardless of the saturation history. The design of the apparatus used to measure relative X-ray absorption of cores undergoing fluid flow tests is similar to that described by Morgan, McDowell and Doty. A few modifications have been incorporated in the design to increase sensitivity and simplicity of measurement. The sensitivity is such that for usual types of cores a recording pen movement of approximately 12 linear in. is occasioned between the recording of the core dry and when it is completely full of an absorbing liquid, a solution of approximately five per cent by volume of iodo-benzene in a close-cut hydrocarbon fraction, or a solution of 50,000 ppm sodium iodide in water. Two types of experiments were conducted, one in which the liquid was inside the core, and the other with the liquid outside the core. Tests with the liquid inside the core were run to cover the saturation range encountered in both the drainage (gas drive) and imbibition (liquid flood) flow systems. It is pointed out that the same core was used, but the tests were conducted at different times with the recording mechanism balanced at a different position. Therefore, the absolute values of relative X-ray intensity at any saturation are not the same in each test. In the second type of test the same core was used, but this time its pore space cmtained only gas, and various thicknesses of oil contained in plastic cells were placed in front of the dry core. As before. the relative X-ray ah- sorption was measured and compared to the quantity of oil in front of the core. The arrangement of the fluids with respect to the path of X-rays in these two types of tests represent fluid distributions of a wider difference than can be expected between that established in a core just due to imbibition and drainage saturation flow histories. Thus any deviation from a straight line relationship of the log of the relative X-ray intensity us saturation calibration should be readily apparent. Results of the laboratory tests are given in Fig. 1. A schematic diagram showing the position of the fluids with respect to the path of the X-ray beam is given for the two cases investigated. In the case where the oil existed outside the core (Case B), the log of the X-ray intensity (log, I/I,) is related directly to the cell thickness (amount of oil in X-ray beam path). This correlation is in full agreement with X-ray theory. In the case where the oil or water existed inside the core (Case A) which covers both drainage and imbibition types of flow processes, again the relationship between absorption and saturation (amount of oil in X-ray beam path

Inclines and tunnels can extend from ground surface to considerable depths traversing a wide range of lithologies. The strata encountered may be affected by loosening and induced stresses at different locations along the route. It is suggested that Phase I of the pre- driving assessment process should include study of the geology, hydrogeology, rock material and rock mass characteristics. A rock mass disruption factor is used to express the ratio of the unconfined strength of intact rock material to the unconfined strength of in situ rock mass. It is suggested that there is a relationship between in situ (secondary) permeability values and the disruption factor, since the permeability of the rock mass is governed by parameters which influence strength. In Phase I1 of the pre-driving assessment, consideration should be given to the prediction of primary loosening which results largely from disturbances to the rock mass arising from the driving process. Also in Phase 11, preliminary assessments are made of the effects of induced stresses and of the geodurability characteristics of the rocks. In Phase 111, the mechanics of various secondary loosening pro- cesses are considered along with their relevance to estimates of stand up time and support requirements. Yield-line analysis is introduced for the study of plastic and brittle type bending deformations. Stand up time and support characteristics are also assessed. In Phase IV, the effects of induced stresses are analysed. It is suggested that even for broken rock in the Yield Zone, the rock mass disruption factor may not often increase above lo which is equivalent to an in situ permeability of 10-1 m/s.

INTRODUCTION PROBABLY no other type of equipment is now being introduced into American underground mines about which less is known and about which there is more misinformation than the Diesel mine locomotive. Any equipment installed underground brings with it hazards that were not present before, and it is the purpose of this paper to show that Diesel-powered equipment can be used with safety in underground mining if certain feasible but very important precautions are taken. Diesel locomotives are not new in underground mining, since they have been used successfully in European mines for at least 19 years, but their use in American mines is exceedingly limited; so far as is known, only five Diesel mine locomotives are operating at present in United States mines. Diesel locomotives were permitted underground in Great Britain for the first time in 1939, and the rapid increase in the number in use in those mines, testifies to their safety and efficiency. More than 1300 Diesel mine locomotives are in use in European mines, according to the latest statistics; these locomotives are employed in coal, iron, lead-zinc and mercury mines. So far as is known, the Diesel mine locomotive has not yet caused an explosion or mine fire, and has not been the cause of any fatalities from toxic gases in the mines in which it has been used. ADJUSTMENTS OF DIESEL ENGINES FOR UNDERGROUND USE A Diesel engine adjusted to work in an underground mine should not be confused with the same engine adjusted for use outside the mine. Adjustment of the air:fuel ratio for engines that are used on the surface is intended to give the maximum fuel economy, and little or no attention is given to the chemical composition of the exhaust gas produced. Many such engines are poorly adjusted and perhaps poorly maintained, with the result that the engine emits smoke in quantity as well as the disagreeable odor familiarly associated with Diesel engines. The air:fuel ratio in the case of Diesel engines operated on the surface is generally around 15:1; that is, 15 lb of air to burn 1 lb of fuel. Diesel engines adjusted to work underground usually have an air:fuel ratio of about 20:I, as at this ratio the minimum quantity of toxic gases is given off in the engine exhaust. Diesel engines operated underground must be maintained in better condition than similar engines used on the surface; otherwise, the smoke emitted in the exhaust becomes objectionable if not unendurable. Practically normal air is required for safe operation of Diesel engines underground or in confined places; failure to provide virtually normal air for Diesel engine operation is almost certain to result in trouble. Bureau of Mines engineers have determined that the air in which a Diesel operates in confined places should contain less than 1/2 pct of carbon dioxide and at least 20 pct of

The extra degree of freedonz introduced by a second independetzt concentration in a tenzary system gives rise to the possibility of unstable planar phase interfaces in semi-infinite diffision layer couples. Diffusion paths which pass continuously in and out of too-phase regions of the phase diagram but which are not coincident with tie-lines give rise to super saturated zones which may be either adjacent to or isolated from planar phase interfaces, with corresponding nonisolated or isolated precipitates. Nonisolated precipitates are equivalent to morphological development of the interface. Selected couples in the ternary systems Fe-Ni-Cr and Cu-Zn-Sn have been examined nzetallographically and ifz the latter case both isolated and uo~zisolated precipitates have been observed. The diffusion path in one of the couples showing interface morphological developtnent has been examitled using electron probe microanalysis. IGNORING the spurious effects of preferential grain boundary diffusion and anisotropic crystal growth7 it can be unequivocally stated that it is impossible for a binary isothermal diffusion couple constructed of two unsaturated phases to sustain a nonplanar phase interface. Consider for demonstrative purposes the schematic phase diagram of Fig. l(a). Given an initial flat phase interface, semi-infinite boundary conditions and the internal boundary condition fixed by the constitution diagram, xB = xB(T), the unique solution of the diffusion equation requires a persistent flat interface. No other solution is possible. If, however, we anticipate the involvement of surface tension, then the internal boundary condition must be written xB = xB (T,Y) where r is the radius of curvature of a hypothetical nonplanar interface. The introduction of a new parameter such as r can be equivalent to the release of an internal constraint, so that a stable nonplanar interface may be possible after all. Consider a perturbation to the interface as indicated in Fig. 1(b). According to the Ostwald-Freundlich equation: which is applicable to a system of this constitution, the solubility of A in the matrix ß ,xB (Y), at a point of curvature r is given by where Va is the molar volume of the a-phase, R is the gas constant, and a is the interfacial tension. Since the right hand side is positive, xB(r) >xB cm, as indicated in Figs. 1(a) and 1(c). Accordingly, the perturbation will carry the interface concentration in a direction which is opposite to that which would sustain local equilibrium. Such a perturbation is necessarily moderated and the system is returned to its initial condition. This result is general for all binary couples since we can regard an interfacial perturbation as an attempt to precipitate within un-

Large scale mining of Mesabi taconites may have moved nearer to realization with the arrival of the latest model Linde Jet-Piercing machine at Reserve Mining Co.'s Babbitt, Minn. property. When the machine is placed in operation it is expected to pierce blast holes in the hard taconite beds up to 10 times faster than is possible with existing drilling equipment. The new primary blast hole drilling machine has been designated the JPM-3, and is the successor to the JPM-1, in operation at Erie Mining Co.'s taconite mines at Aurora, Minn. The size of primary blast holes which can now be pierced has increased from a nominal 61 in. diameter to 71 in. diameter and maximum hole depth has increased from 35 ft to 47 ft. Development has progressed to where 71/2 in. holes can be pierced with the same speed as 61/2 in. holes. Piercing progress is controlled by electronic blowpipe descent controls. Other features of the JPM-3 include: automatic burner ignition from the operating cab; heated and air conditioned operating cab designed for all-year operation; mechanical improvements for sub-zero operation common to the Mesabi, and redesign of wearing parts for longer service with minimum maintenance. The 40-ton machine is self-propelled. Power, oxygen, and cooling water lines trail from the machine. Jet piercing is based on combustion products of oxygen and a liquid fuel such as kerosene. The flame, jetting from a burner at speeds of about 6000 ft per sec, disintegrates layers of spallable rock. The burner is cooled by water which is then directed through orifices around the periphery of the burner. The water changes to steam and carries the spallings out of the hole. The equipment used in Jet-Piercing is essentially a tractor-mounted blowpipe containing a combustion chamber and nozzle, which is in effect a miniature rocket motor, from which the supersonic combustion gases emerge to do their work.

The work of an engineer is to direct natural forces so that the: bring about the results that he wishes to secure. Heretofore he ha concerned himself chiefly with physical forces and inanimate objects until he has secured a truly marvelous degree of control over them The great problem of the present age is to secure a like degree of know1 edge and control of the human factor. Progress has already been made along this line, but it is only a beginning. Wilhelm Ostwald says tha scientific knowledge enables a man to be a true prophet; but it must be remembered that a good many people do not seem to be able to main tain a high average in prophecy. In short, 'the average of knowledge is not equal to the average needs of the present time, but continually fails to keep pace with it. It has been aptly said that the really essentia need of the period is for more brains; if we only had sufficient knowledg and sagacity we could not only solve all difficulties, but prevent then from arising. This generalization holds good for an industrial organization. Th most vital need of the management is for more brains. The logica course for an engineer in charge of an industrial organization is, therefore to direct whatever forces may be at his command toward the development training, and guiding of all the brains in his organization. This is easie said than done, for it involves the carrying on toward two objective: the maximum of productive work, and the development of the individual who perform it. This is essentially like the rebuilding and enlarging of plant, keeping it in full operation the while. On the other hand, if th aim is merely for maximum production from an organization, withou offering opportunity for development, the final outcome will necessari be like that of a plant that is driven at full capacity without stoppin for repairs or improvements; it eventually becomes so run down th either a complete rebuilding is necessary or else it has to be abandone

The treatment of slime is of special interest to those engaged in cyaniding gold- and silver-ores. The usual practice is to make as small a percentage of slime as possible. In many instances the slime is given no treatment, but is impounded in dams in the hope that the future will develop some method of economically treating this product. The filter-press was the first step upward from ordinary decantation, but, on account of heavy labor-charge and high cost, its use has been limited to high-grade material. The slime at the Combination mill at Goldfield averages perhaps $20 per ton, and although the values are quickly dis solved the filter-press installation was not entirely satisfactory, resulting in the erection of the canvas-cell filter, developed by Chas. Butters and his staff. This filter is a great improvement over the filter-press, and the following description of it will be of interest to those engaged in treating slime produced in crushing ores, especially in view of the fact that, by the use of this filter, slime can be treated at a lesser cost and with a higher percentage of gold- or silver-extraction than in the ordinary treatment of sand; and, moreover, the initial outlay for an all-sliming plant is less than that for the ordinary sand- and slime-plant. The economy of construction of the Butters filter-plant is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which illustrate the 20-frame filter of 40 tons capacity, now being installed by the Nevada Goldfield Reduction Co. In this construction the slime-pump is so connected that it call pump to or from either tank or the filter by changing the valve-settinga—a combination which is necessary in this particular installation, since sufficient fall is not available for filling and discharging the filter by gravity. The bottom water drive analysis presented by Muskat has been extended to include fields with wider well spacings. Curves are presented from which volumetric sweepout, water-oil ratio, and rate relations may be calculated. The effects of non-unity ratios on sweepout eficiency and productivity decline have been studied by an approximate method. Also, the effect of gravity on volumetric sweepout has been approximated for a particurlar geometry. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to report work done in applying the analysis of bottom water drive reservoirs given by Muskat1 to a larger class of reservoirs, to extend this analysis to include the effects of gravity and non-unity mobility ratios in an approximate manner, and to investigate the rate of decline of productive capacity. The bottom water drive type reservoir is one where the oil is underlain by a water zone of sufficient thickness that water movement is essentially vertical. This system is defined in more detail in the appendix and a one well element is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. Muskat obtained solutions to the equations describing the volumetric displacement efficiency of idealized bottom water drive systems by assuming that gravity effects due to differences in density betwecn oil and water were negligible and that the mobilities of oil and water were the same. If either of these assumptions is not made, the complexity of the system makes an analytical solution well nigh impossible at the present stage of mathematical development. Coles and Stade' developed an approximation to consider these factors. The authors have refined approximations, starting with the same basic assumption, which should give a somewhat quantitative picture of bottom water drive performance when mobilities are not equal and the effects of gravity are not negligible. The results of these approximate calculations can then be used to obtain the decline in well productivity as the field is depleted.

The statistical data given in this paper are taken from the actual performance of the No. 2 reverberatory furnace of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., Mc Gill, Nev., for a period of four months, from April to July, 1914. The principal furnace dimensions are: Length, 132 ft. % in. at the skim-line level; average width, 18 ft., 10 in. at the skim-line level. The roof is 7 ft. above the skim-line level at the firing end. The average area in the uptake flue is 36 sq. ft., and the area above the skim line under the vulcatory arch is 24.3 sq. ft. Fig. 1 shows a diagrammatic plan and sectional elevation of this furnace. The furnace is equipped with two 400-b.h.p. Stirling waste-heat boilers set in parallel. California crude petroleum is used for fuel and has a specific gravity of 16.5" B., flashing in open test at 199" F. The oil is heated to about 200" F. in a steam heater before going to the burners, requiring about 9 b.h.p. per furnace day to heat it from the line temperature to the burning temperature. Measurement is made by oil meter, checked daily by reservoir readings. The oil is fed by gravity (34 Ib. static pressure) to seven low-pressure blast burners of the Steptoe type (Fig. 2). The blast for these burners is supplied at about 40-08. pressure by a motor-driven Connersville blower of 42 cu. ft. capacity per revolution. The air supplied by the blower through the burners for atomizing the oil amounts to about 10 per cent. of the theoretical air necessary for complete combustion of the oil. The remainder of the necessary air enters the furnace through the burner openings in the firing wall. No checker holes are provided, and the charge holes in the roof are equipped with slide gates and " dog houses" to minimize air leakages. The combustion of the fuel, as shown by gas analysis at the front of the furnace, is practically complete, the carbon monoxide in the gases being less than 0.5 per cent. The draft at the firing end of the furnace is 0.18 in. of water. At the throat or in the uptake above the "verb" the draft is about 1 in.

CUSHMAN, Middletown, Ohio (written discussion*).¬ This subject is one to which I have given much thought and study and which I have frequently discussed informally with Mr. Cain and others. I have long been convinced that the gaseous elements, either combined or entrained (occluded), in steel play a much more important role than is ordinarily admitted. This is probably due to the difficulties encountered in the accurate quantitative estimation of gases, some of which Mr. Cain has referred to, as well as to the fact that, considered from the weight-percentage basis, gas content is measurable only in hundredths or even thousandths of 1 per cent. Volumetrically, however, the results ob-tained by modern research are startling, to say the least. Baraduc-Muller,1 as cited by Mr. Cain, pumped out of 1000-lb. ingots of basic Bessemer steel 2100 l. of gas. or about 75 cu. ft., at normal temperature and pressure, per ton of steel. In other words, we are to understand that Bessemer steel normally carries about fifteen times its own volume of gas. According to Baraduc-Müller's table of results, which is given here-with, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and hydrogen are important consti-tuents of Bessemer steel, the latter gas being undoubtedly formed by the

THE Birmingham district of Alabama has utilized the slag from its blast furnaces consistently since the earliest development of the slag industry. Today there are producers of slag cement who started business in 1900, and who have, under a progressive policy, expanded the number of their products to meet present demands. There are producers of slag aggregates and other crushed slag products who have been successful for periods of over thirty years. There are at the present two companies, Cheney Lime and Cement Co. and the Southern Cement Co., manufacturing puzzolan cement; two companies, Birmingham Slag Co. and Woodstock Slag Co., making slag aggregates and by-products; one company, Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railway Co., a subsidiary of the U. S. Steel Corporation, producing ground open-hearth basic slag for soil conditioning. Two companies, the Sloss Sheffield Steel and Iron Co. and the Woodstock Slag Co., make slag concrete in ready-mix plants and one company, the Superock Company, manufactures fine and coarse slag aggregates under a new granulation process. No Portland cement is made with slag as an ingredient, because dolomite is used so extensively as a blast-furnace flux that the magnesium content of the slag is excessive. Sources Of Slag In the Birmingham district there are 22 blast furnaces, of which the majority are in blast. The present production is 165,000 tons of pig iron monthly; the production in 1935 was 1,297,960 gross tons1. There are also two blast furnaces at Gadsden and one ferroalloy electric furnace at Anniston. From these two sources is obtained slag to approximately 1.1 tons per ton of pig iron.
