A study of the diffusion of nickel into both fibrous and recrystallized 0.065-in.-diam silica-alumina doped tungsten wire at 1200°C has been conducted. The diffusion profiles were determined by chemical dissolulion of successive circumferential layers and spectro-photometric determination of nickel in the etchant. It was shown that the diffusion of nickel into tungsten is markedly structure-sensitive. No significant amount of nickel could be introduced at 1200°C into tungsten which had first been recrystallized at temperatures of 2300°C, leading to an upper limit estimate for the bulk diffusivity of nickel in tungsten of 10-11 sq cm per sec at 1200°C. However, nickel did diffuse into initially fibrous wires, caused re crystallization, and was alsays present at the advancing recrystallization front. The accumulation of nickel in an initially fibrous region ceases when the recrystallization front arrives. The characteristics of the resulting diffusion profiles are explained in terms of the relation between diffusion processes and micro structural changes. WHILE it is well-known that the presence of nickel and certain other metals causes low-temperature recrystallization of the cold-worked fibrous structure of doped tungsten,''' the character of the phenomenon is not well understood. Recently it was shown that the recrystallization reaction can be induced at low temperatures by the presence of solid nickel on the surface of doped wire, but not by exposure to nickel vapors.3 Once recrystallization was initiated, a continued source of nickel was required for propagation of the recrystallization front. The phenomenon appeared to be a complicated solid-state reaction since, in addition to the change in structure of the tungsten from fibrous to equiaxed grains, diffusion of nickel from the surface into the recrystallized and fibrous structures was occurring with possible chemical reaction between nickel and tungsten at the surface and interaction of nickel with the dopants which ordinarily stabilize the fibrous structure within the wire. The objective of the present work was to study the diffusion of nickel into fibrous and recrystallized tungsten structures in order to clarify the relationship of the diffusion process to nickel-induced recrystallization. Studies of interdiffusion in the Ni-W system4"7 have been principally concerned with the mobility of tungsten in nickel. Information on diffusion of nickel in tungsten is meager, and there seem to be no studies of the mobility of nickel in tungsten which elucidate the structural aspects of the phenomenon. The present experiments were designed to determine the diffusivity of nickel at 1200°C in fibrous tungsten, in large-grained tungsten prerecrystallized at high tem- perature, and in tungsten recrystallized at 1200°C due to the presence of nickel. Although the concentration profiles were determined in these experiments, unexpected changes in boundary conditions or complex diffusion paths complicated the analysis of these profiles so that the interpretation could not be readily expressed in terms of simple diffusivities. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments were conducted on Sylvania 0.065-in.-diam silica-alumina doped commercial tungsten wire, hereafter designated as ordinary doped wire. A special lot of 0.065-in.-diam silica-alumina doped low-nickel wire was also used. Impurity analyses of the wire are given in Table I. The experimental design is shown in Fig. 1. All heat treatments were conducted in vacuum. Two groups of ordinary doped wire were prepared for diffusion with nickel. One group in the as-received (fibrous) condition was elec-tropolished, nickel-plated, and annealed at 1200°C for 20 and 40 hr, or was exposed to nickel vapor at 1200°C for 20 and 40 hr. The second group was recrystallized to an equiaxed grain structure at 2300°C for 3 hr, electropolished, nickel-plated, or exposed to nickel vapor for anneals at 1200°C for 20 and 40 hr.

THEM is acute need for a method that will measure the size distribution of finely divided materials, particularly when the particle sizes are smaller than the openings of the finest screen cloth regularly available for testing. Several methods and types of apparatus are in common use, but none are entirely satisfactory for all purposes. The commonest methods are microscopic grain counts, elutriation by liquids or air, and sedimentation. Valuable results have been secured by air elutriating devices, typified by the Haultain Infra-Sizer and the Pearson Air Analyzer. These are especially useful in obtaining sized fractions that can be examined and analyzed separately. They are particularly advantageous because the sizes of the samples produced are adequate for a considerable amount of subsequent manipulation and testing. The sedimentation methods, such as the Wagner and Klein turbidimeters, and the sedimentation balance, do not deliver sized fractions, but they do provide a means for reasonably rapid comparative determinations of fineness and surface area, which are important in many industries. The sedimentation balance consists essentially of a balance pan suspended in a liquid that contains falling particles. These are weighed as they settle onto the pan, and the time rate of settling is determined. The size distribution is computed from the settling rate. The balance appears to be inherently more accurate than any of the other methods, and it has served a useful purpose in the study of numerous problems, but there have been limitations which have restricted its scope of application. Because of the essential simplicity of the method, it was felt that intensive investigation might lead to modifications that would make it a valuable tool for the operators in industries that require precise information regarding the results secured from grinding equipment. A large number of size-distribution determinations below 200 mesh were required in connection with a particular research problem in fine grinding. The sedimentation balance was used in this investigation, and a technique was gradually developed that ultimately gave good results. A serious difficulty appeared early in the work. It was discovered that less material always settled on the sedimentation pan and more on the bottom of the containing jar than could be accounted for by calculation, and also that the material that settled to the bottom of the jar outside the edges of the pan was considerably finer than that on the pan. This segregation was so great that the distribution obtained for the finer sizes was obviously very much in error; material ground to about the degree of comminution of cement might have only 60 per cent of the calculated weight actually settling on the pan, and the error increased with the fine-

IN order to get an idea as to the strength of steel rails, it will be well to review the tests to which iron rails have been subjected. In England, Mr. Ashcroft found that the best 80 pound rails broke under a 300 pound weight, falling 15 feet. In Germany the Society of Railway tyfanage1-s determined 011 and have long applied a test of 1000 pounds falling 101/2 feet, as the standard which all first-class iron rails must reach. In this country no inspection nor test is applied, but tests made show that iron rails fro; our most reliable makers, break under a G foot fall of a 1500 pound drop as an extreme test, most of those tested breaking under a far less test; some breaking with less than a 3 foot fall of the same weight. Everywhere where steel has been used, engineers have come to the conclusion that some test is required to show the regularity and strength of the product. As compared with iron, the tests which steel will stand are wonderful. After numerous experiments partially based on the experience of the rail-mill at Graz, belonging to the Southern Railway of Austria, the Society of German Railway Managers fixed upon a test of 2000 pounds falling 138 feet. They found that this test represented the steel which suited their necessities, and also found that with steel of otherwise average purity, this test represented about one-half per cent. of carbon, and made it a rule to take no steel containing under three-tenths of a per cent. of carbon, because it was too soft. They expressed a hope that a harder steel could soon be made tough enough to stand the same test. I n England, a test was adopted of 2240 pounds, falling 15 to 17 feet on the rail on heavy bearings. This test has been found satisfactory under heavy traffic on average road-beds, and has been invariablyPILLAR of coal, which are designed and left in our mines as the means of supporting the overlying strata of our coal-beds, and securing protection to the miner, are not only insufficient for these purposes, but the most objectionable means of providing the desired security to life and property. Though such pillars are left at a great sacrifice to the owners of collieries and mineral lands, loss to the resources of the commonwealth, and ultimate privation to the public, they defeat the very ends for which they are designed, and not only do not secure life and property, but are as fatal to the one as ruinous to the other. Propositions.-It is eminently desirable that the resources of the Common wealth-particularly our mineral wealth in anthracite coal, which is limited-should be carefully utilized and made available, not only to ourselves but our posterity. Yet, speaking as an anthracite miner, we are wasting our resources of coal with a recklessness which will bring ruin in the end, unless checked, not only to the iron manufacturing interests of the East, whose chief protection, in competition with the iron-masters of the interior, lies in a cheap and abundant supply of anthracite furnace fuel, but to the best interests of the State. It is, consequently, not only desirable, but necessary, that we should realize every ton of coal from each colliery, and every acre of coal area, in order that our resources may not be wasted at present, to breed want in the future, and to realize the greatest present benefit to the mine, the miner, and the public. It is not possible, however, to secure these ends, if we continue to leave, as we do at present, from one-third to one-half our resources in anthracite as pillars in our mines. But our sad bills of mortality, our abandoned collieries, and our yawning mountain-sides, present ample evidence that even this enormous waste of coal, though left for the purpose of protecting life and property, is as totally inade-

Artificially consolidated sand models, representing one-quarter of a five-spot, have been developed and used to study factors aflecting misciblt. displacrmenr. Sweep efficiency at breakthrough, size of the mixing zone between two miscible liquids and per cent area contacted by drive after breakthrough were determined tor the high mobility ratios encountered in actual resvrvoirs. Quantitative relationships between the degree of viscous fingering and mobility ratio were obtained by measuring the length of the fluid interface. Scaled miscible-slug experiments, supported by field evidence reported in the literature, have shown that when the slug is followed by dry gas the process is less efficient than expected. In addition to low areal sweep efficiencies encountered for high mobility ratio displacements, the effectiveness of a miscible slug is greatly reduced. This is caused by an accelerated growth of the mixing zone between the driving and the displacing fluids. INTRODUCTION Considerable interest in miscible displacement as a secondary recovery process has been shown by the oil industry in recent years. In addition to extensive laboratory investigations, numerous field operations have been initiated so that 39 miscible displacement projects had been reported' in the United States by early 1959. By far the most popular approach in these projects is the use of an LPG slug followed by dry gas. Laboratory tests have indicated that with a small miscible slug, amounting to several per cent of the hydrocarbon pore volume, practically 100 per cent recovery of the oil in place can be achieved and that all of the slug material can be recovered by a subsequellt gas drive. However, these experiments were conducted on small-diameter long cores that can be considered as essentially uni-dimensional reservoirs that do not represent actual field conditions. It soon became apparent that the inherently adverse mobility ratios existing in the reservoir cannot be ignored in any miscible displacement field project. When a less viscous fiuid such as an LPG slug drives a more viscous reservoir oil, fingers develop that reduce the areal sweep efficiency. The slze of the miscible slug to be used is a subject of some controversy. It has been proposed that the size of siug needed be calculated by setting lengths of the mixing zone proportional to the square root of the distance traveled. This proposal is based on experimental evidence' and theoretical considerations"' in which fingering was not a factor. A prerequisite for successful application of the miscible displacement process to field operations is a better understanding of the following factors. L What is the effect of mobility ratio on the rate of deterioration of a miscible slug? 2. How large a slug should be used for given reservoir conditions? 3. What is the sweep efficiency? The purpose of this investigation was to provide some additional laboratory data that should help to answer these questions. More specifically, it was intended to study more quantitatively the effect of viscous fiinger-ing, mobility ratio and slug size on the efficiency of this relatively new secondary recovery process by means of experiments on thin, horizontal, porous medium models.

PRESENT-DAY processing in many industries, calcining, sintering, briquetting, beneficiation and nodulizing, increasingly calls for the handling of large volumes of hot bulk materials. Various types of conveyors have been employed. This discussion will cover the factors governing their selection. For temperature ranges up to 400°F, or approximately 200°C, a wide range of conveyors is available. Special constructions of rubber conveyor belts. steel conveyor belts, vibrating and shaker conveyors, apron conveyors, and drag chain conveyors, all are used successfully. As temperatures go well above 400°F, however, choice of conveyors is narrowly limited. This paper will consider the problem of handling bulk materials only where the temperatures exceed 400°F.

Investigations on the beneficiation of sedimentary Moroccan phosphate ores are reported in four separate parts. The first discusses electrochemical phenomena at the solid-aqueous solution interface for minerals of the apatite group. In the second part, the electrochemical properties of the calcareous gangue associated with the phosphate ore are investigated. The flotation of calcite and phosphate oölites, using both anionic and cationic collectors, is discussed in the third part. It is shown that selective recovery could be obtained for precise concentrations of collectors and pH ranges. Results of work aimed at optimizing depression of phosphate oölites during inverse flotation of the carbonate gangue with sodium oleate are reported in Part 4.

DURING an investigation of the yttrium-hydrogen system aimed at producing solid yttrium hydride specimens containing various amounts of hydrogen, it was observed that yttrium containing approximately 2 wt pct H exhibited a tendency to crack and crumble to a powder on standing in air at room temperature. It was also observed that longer hydriding times, at a given temperature, increased this susceptibility to powdering without an increase in hydrogen content, also that moisture in the air is necessary for the observed effects to occur. Even if cracking did not occur, there was a continual formation of a light gray powder on the as-treated surface of the hydrided yttrium and this reaction continues until the entire hydrided piece has been reduced to a powder. Storing the hydrided specimens in the absence of air or removing the surface either by machining or grinding were effective means of preventing this disintegration of hydrided yttrium. In an attempt to determine the reason for this powdering phenomenon, the surfaces of a number of as-hydrided yttrium specimens were examined by X-ray techniques. In all cases the X-ray pattern obtained showed the major phase to be yttrium hydride (YH2) as would be expected since the specimens contained 2 to 2.2 wt pct H. In some cases a trace of yttrium oxide was observed. There was also a third phase present on the surface of these hydrided specimens which could not immediately be identified. This unknown phase was a face-centered cubic material, NaC1-type structure, with a lattice parameter of 4.855 and a calculated density of 5.914 g per cc. Very slight hand polishing of the surface of the hydrided yttrium specimens completely removed both the unknown phase and the traces of oxide so that only the yttrium hydride pattern remained. Based on the X-ray patterns the quantity of the unknown phase on the surface of the hydrided yttrium appeared to be directly related to the susceptibility of the material to powdering. Work at the Denver Research Institute on the yttrium-nitrogen binary system showed that yttrium nitride (YN) is a face-centered cubic material with a lattice parameter of 4.878A and a density of 5.890 g per cc. They also noted that this compound rapidly disintegrated to a powder on standing in air. The unknown pattern observed in the above specimens corresponds very closely to that of the nitride—fcc structure, 4.885 parameter, and density of 5.914 g per cc. The presence of this thin film of nitride on the surface of the hydrided specimens probably accounts for the observed powder formation and crumbling. The nitride reacts with the water vapor in the air (verified by private communication from Dr. C. Huffine, General Electric Co.) to yield yttrium oxide and ammonia. Ammonia is readily detected when hydrided yttrium specimens were allowed to stand in bottled moist air. The powder formed on the surface of the hydrided specimens was shown by X-ray analysis to be yttrium oxide. This reaction appears to occur primarily at the grain boundaries since discrete particles of yttrium hydride separate from the specimens during this powdering process. The reaction of yttrium nitride with water vapor is believed to be as follows: 2YN + 3H2O - Y203 + 2NH3. Despite the fact that this nitride is present only as an extremely thin surface film, if the above reaction is not prevented by removing this film from the surface either by machining or grinding, the reaction continues until the entire hydrided piece has been reduced to a powder. To account for this continuation of the reaction, it is believed that the following reactionalsooccurs: 2YH2 + 2NH3 -2YN + 5H2. The nitride produced by the latter reaction reacts in turn with water vapor. The reaction therefore becomes autocatalytic and continues until the hydride has been consumed and the entire piece reduced to oxide powder. The amount of nitride required to initiate this reaction is quite small and this nitrogen contamination can occur from a number of sources—hydrogen gas employed, minute leak in the hydriding apparatus or even from degassing of the reaction vessel itself. Longer hydriding times increase the possibility of nitrogen contamination and this is especially true when a dynamic gas system is employed in the hydriding process. The production of stable, solid hydrided yttrium is dependent on the complete absence of nitrogen contamination during processing. If such contamination does occur, powdering of the hydrided product can be prevented by removing the nitride from the surface e.g. grinding or by preventing access of air to the pieces e.g. sealing in wax or plastic. It is often assumed that aerated oil field brines which are to be injected underground contain dissolved oxygen in amounts which will cause appreciable corrosion. Through the use of a new portable dissolved oxygen meter, accurate determinations were made at three brine conditioning plants. At two older plants, dissolved oxygen concentration in the final treated brine was found to he almost zero In spite of aeration during the conditioning process. At a new plant, dissolved oxygen was initially present but disappeared soon after the brine was "inoculated" with oxygen-free brine from one of the other plants. Corrosion tests at the two older plants have substantiated predictions that the brines would lint be corrosive. These results show that mechanical deaeration may not always be required in brine treating plants. INTRODUCTION The present work was undertaken to add to our knowledge of aeration and deaeration of oil field brines in brine conditioning plants. It is commonly assumed that brines which are exposed to the air soon become more or less saturated with dissolved oxygen. Since oxygen-containing brines are known to be corrosive, precautions are often taken to keep air out of brine through the use of closed systems or mechanical deaeration. The study of oxygen in brine has been seriously hampered in the past because of the lack of a suitable analytical tool. The standard Winkler method for the determination of dis-solved oxygen is satisfactory for use in fresh water, but not in many oil field brines. Corrections have to be made for a number of reducing substances such as ferrous iron and hydrogen sulfide which are commonly present in natural brines. Very often the correction factors are much greater in magnitude than the amounts of oxygen which are to be determined, and consequently erroneous results are obtained. Also. erratic Winkler data are obtained when appreciable concentrations of calcium and magnesium salts are present. The first step in carrying out a systematic study involved designing a portable dissolved oxygen apparatus which would operate in natural brines. Subsequently, this apparatus was used in three brine conditioning plants. Dissolved oxygen data obtained here, and certain corrosion rate data, illustrate the interesting behavior of oxygen in these oil field brines. APPARATUS A portable dissolved oxygen meter described in detail elsewhere,' was developed specifically for use with oil field brines. It is a polarographic apparatus employing a small rotating platinum electrode (cathode) and calomel reference electrode (anode). A potential of 0.7 volts is applied across the electrodes while they are immersed in the brine to be tested. 4References given at end of paper.

The substructural features developed in tungsten as a function of annealing temperature (up to 2200°C) and type of material [undoped and doped powder metallurgy (PM) tungsten and electron beam melted tungsten] have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. For doped PM tungsten wires, characteristic "par-ticulate" substructural features developed rapidly with increase in annealing temperature above 700°C. The features consisted of parallel rows of elongated or circular shapes (500 to 1000A diam) lying along the direction of the wire axis and were identified as internal voids by diffraction contrast experiments. In recrystallized doped PM rod, larger voids were observed and were identified by precision dark field analysis to be cubic in shape and bounded by (100) planes. In marked contrast with both the doped PM materials, recrystallized undoped PM rod exhibited only very occasional and randomly arranged voids. Furthermore, no voids were observed in either material after electron beam melting. The high concentration of voids in the doped PM materials is attributed primarily to vaporization of doping additions or their pvoducts situated at the original grain boundaries , whereas the few voids in undoped material are considered to be traces of microporosity which were not eliminated during sintering. A tentative mechanism is suggested for the dezlelopment of the voids in relation to the processing sequences (sintering and working) and to the subsequent annealing. In recent years, a characteristic substructural feature consisting of rows of small elongated or circular regions of light contrast lying along the direction of working has been seen in thin foil electron microscopy studies of annealed sheet, wire, and rod tungsten. These features were present in the published micrographs of sheet by Weissmann et al.1 and of wire by Meieran and Thomas2, although the authors did not draw attention to them. Wronski and Fourdeux3 observed similar features in sintered rod tungsten (it was not specified whether or not the material was doped*) and interpreted them on the basis of their ap- particles, based on extraction replica evidence from the fracture surface of the initial hot-rolled slab material from which the sheet was prepared. No diffraction contrast experiments on the features were reported in any of these studies. The present investigation was undertaken with the primary objectives of: a) identifying the nature of these substructural features in tungsten by electron diffraction contrast experiments, since the contrast for voids can be expected to differ from that for crystalline or glassy particles, and b) elucidating the origin of the features and their development. For the latter purpose, doped and undoped powder metallurgy tungsten was obtained as rod and wire to represent different stages of reduction during final processing. These materials were examined both in the as-processed condition and after annealing to successively higher temperatures. In addition, the same doped and undoped materials were examined after vacuum melting in rod form. I) MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Doped powder metallurgy (PM) tungsten wire (commercial purity 99.9 pct W) was obtained in the as-drawn and surface ground condition (0.030 in. diam "ground seal rod"). Doped and undoped tungsten rod (0.075 in. diam) representing an earlier stage of final processing was obtained from the same commercial source (Refractory Metals Division, General Electric Co.). Lengths of both the doped and undoped rod materials were single-pass melted in an electron-beam zone refiner to examine the effect of vacuum melting on the substructure. Annealing was carried out in a tungsten crucible in a tantalum strip resistance furnace under a vacuum of l0-15 mm Hg. Longitudinal sections of the wire and rod materials were examined by light and electron microscopy. The preparation of thin foils suitable for electron transmission from 0.030 in. diam tungsten wire and the rod specimens was carried out by means of a high-precision microjet technique developed to provide lack of jet stability and precise control of the area thinned. The method is described in detail elsewhere.' The foils were examined in a JEM 6A electron microscope using a goniometer stage (±20 deg tilt, 360 deg rotation) and operated at 100 kV. To minimize contamination problems a 200 µ condenser aperture was used in conjunction with a useful beam current of 50 µA. II) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A) Diffraction Contrast Analysis. In order to determine the optimum conditions for the development of the substructural feature, a series of isochronal 30 min annealing experiments were carried out on specimens of the doped PM tungsten wire. The transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that the as-drawn wire, Fig. 1(a), consists of 'fibers' whose long axis is closely parallel to the wire axis of (110). Interpreting pressure measurements is one of the fundamental problems in the operation of oil reservoirs. The principal methods and means of study zuhich are currently used are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the necessity of improving the quality of the information to turn it to the best possible account. One of the important aspects of the problem is the development of a system of automatic interpretation of the pressure measurements. The proposed method aims at this objective: starting from the relation which exists between a local perturbation of permeability and its effect on the velocity potentials in the wells, we determine by successive approximation the modifications to be made to the permeability map by fitting the least squares between the measured pressures and the pressures indicated by the mathematical model. The method has already been successfully employed in the case of heterogeneous reservoirs of radial- circular symmetry. Its application is extended here to the two-dimensional case, and is illustrated by two examples, for which the results are presented. The conditions required for the method to become fully operational are likewise analyzed. I — INTRODUCTION One of the basic problems of production and recovery from oil fields is interpreting pressure measurements made in wells in the single-fluid-phase regime. Simplifying assumptions, for example supposing the reservoir to be homogeneous, make it possible to use more or less simple methods which permit the estimation, from these pressure measurements, of a mean value of the permeability around the wells. Considering the actual heterogeneity of the majority of reservoirs, and the phenomena of interference between wells, these methods are only indicative. Much has been published on the studies of different cases of comparatively simple heterogeneity: some have discussed the radial heterogeneity around a single wel1,l or vertical heterogeneity.2 The results of these works have shown the influence of variations of permeability on the pressure, but unfortunately they are not very useful in practice because they all are concerned with the phenomena around a single well, without interference between wells, and they correspond to relatively simple and theoretical schemes. These studies of reservoirs or parts of reservoirs on a larger scale are made by the electric analyzer or digital model. We define a permeability map and a porosity map, then reproduce the production history of the wells on the wells of the model, and note the corresponding pressures. These pressures are then compared with actuality, and the discrepancies observed are analyzed. From this analysis we deduce the modifications to be made to the maps of permeability and porosity, and repeat until the coincidence between the pressures indicated by the model and the actually observed pressures is considered adequate. We have adjusted the model. Obviously, in this method of investigation, everything depends on the formula which permits the modification of the permeability to approach the adjustment. Considering the complicated nature of the problem, some oversimplified formulas are poorly adapted to reaching a good adjustment. For example, we have shown that the elementary operation of increasing the permeability not far from a producing well to compensate for too low pressures in the well can, in certain cases, express itself by an effect exactly opposite. 3 The project described here is for a system where we begin with the pressure measurements and the several known parameters of the reservoir, and develop the most probable permeability map, taking account of the measurements available and a subdivision of the reservoir fixed a priori. Ideally, this system is conceived as one in which no manual intervention would be necessary. The model simulating the reservoir is only one part of the whole system, and it is neither the longest nor the most complex part. The need to integrate the model into an aggregate of much more extensive processes has led to the adoption of the digital solution, even though a solution combining the digital and the analog is perfectly conceivable. Although it has been apparent to me for a long time that too great weight was currently given to the silicon-contents of foundry-iron, and that the theory of the control by silicon of the carbon-contents of cast-iron is unsound, or that, at best, the influence of silicon is too small to be of much practical value as a guide in foundry-work, it never seemed to me desirable to enter the lists against either the " silicon-fad " or the theory, for the reason that I had neither the time nor the facilities to prove my position, nor any better theory to offer. But since Mr. Summers has taken the step, it seems but right that I should give such facts as are at hand in support of his contention. At the same time I do not think these are enough to prove the case if the contrary proposition were not itself, as it seems to me, based on insufficient evidence. Both Keep's and Turner's conclusions seem to be drawn from irons carrying less than the normal amount of carbon; Turner's " base " being, moreover, a steel rather than a pig-iron, and both the white base and the ferro-silicon of Keep being so low in carbon that compounds of them would not give a material approaching the carbon-contents of a normal casting, and having, therefore, little value as showing the effects of silicon on foundry-irons, even if his samples were treated under the same conditions as those to which pig-metal is subjected in making castings.

DURING the summer of 1916, while on a visit to the United States Agricultural Experiment Station at Mayaguez, Porto Rico, the writers were told by D. W. May, the director, that an occurrence of manganese ore had been reported from the mesa southeast of Mayaguez. A visit to the locality showed that the mesa is covered by a mantle of bright red soil resting upon serpentine. On account of the similarity of this occurrence to the extensive iron deposits of northeastern Cuba, it was thought that a brief description based upon a two days' reconnaissance survey of the area would be of scientific interest. MESSRS. BURT and Shockley and others have been for three years urging upon the Institute the matter of simplified spelling. The Institute endeavors to be progressive in the matter of spelling and. is in cooperation with the national body which has this in hand and which has its principal office in New York. Our spellings are changed as fast as-good usage will permit (so it seems to the Board of Directors) and the national body, which is the real representative of the simplified spelling interests, deems that the Institute is making real progress, although not quite as fast as extremists would wish. In January, 1919, Mr. Shockley sent out letter ballots which created a misconception in the minds of many members, who received the impression that the communications came from the Institute instead of from a small group of members. As a result of this propaganda 163 proposal-ballots were sent in to the Institute divided as follows: Yes ?114 No ?20 Negative letters ?9 Split ballots ?20 Total ?163 The total membership at this time was about 7200. The disgusted members would not vote.

THE following scanty notes on the Roumanian oil-region may serve as an introduction to more detailed future study and description. The Roumauian oil-belt, follows the outer edge of the sweep of the Carpathian Mountains, and may, in a broad sense, be regarded as a prolongation of the Galician belt. It is distributed over a tract of country from 300 to 400 miles in length, with a width of from 15 to 20 miles, and is believed to cover an area of at least 20,000 hectares (59,420 acres). The Government claims that 16,000 to 17,000 hectares of its land is petroliferous. The primary deposits of petroleum are considered to be in the Padeogene (Oligocene) and the Neogene (the salines of the Miocene) formations. Most of the other repositories, especially those of Muntenie, are only secondary, the petroleum there having been introduced by the orogeneric movements which raised the Carpathian Mountains. The oil-field has been divided by the Roumanian survey into two regions, the Flysch and the Sub-Carpathian, as is shown in the accompanying sketch-map, Fig. 1.(p. 518). So far as is yet, known, practically all the seepages and .productive pits and wells are situated oil anticlinals. Those which outcrop in the Flysch region. (called Paleogene anticlinals), as indicated in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, are : Solontz, Middle Oligocene; Moineshti, Moineshti and Tagu-Ocna-beds of the Eocene.

A first-class haulage level railroad was considered of prime importance during planning of San Manuel because successful operation of the mine would hinge heavily on the ability to move large tonnages of ore rapidly, safely and efficiently. These principles, plus certain techniques developed from experience on the 1475 level, are being employed in preparation of the 2075 level. At full production, twelve 23-ton trolley locomotives, each pulling fifteen 12-ton capacity ore cars, and fifteen 8-ton battery locomotives engaged in development, service and supply, will be in operation on the 2075 level 24 hours per day, seven days a week. More than 35,000 tons of ore will be transported every 24 hours. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The rail haulage system is designed to comfort- ably move twelve 180-ton payload trains per hour through the rotary dumps pulled by 23-ton trolley locomotives. The rail system is laid out as a simple double loop with one-way traffic of continuous haul as shown in the above diagram, and is comprised of about 30 miles of track on the 2075 level.

ASBESTOS is a general term embracing the fibrous varieties of a number of minerals. Of these, the hydrous magnesium silicate, chrysotile (H4Mg3Si209), a variety of serpentine, is the most abundant and useful to industry. All other types of asbestos belong to the amphibole group of minerals and are classified as: crocidolite, NaFe(SiO3), FeSiO3; anthophyllite, (MgFe)SiO3; amosite, also a ferromagnesium silicate but with iron content higher than that of anthophyllite; tremolite, CaMg3(SiO3)4; and, actinolite, Ca (MgFe)3(SiO3)4. PROPERTIES The commercial value of asbestos depends largely on the physical property that permits it to be readily separated into fine filaments of high tensile strength and flexibility, which, coupled with the fact that it has the quality of incombustibility of a mineral-in distinction to vegetable and animal fibers-makes it of unique usefulness for many purposes. To some extent, the value depends upon the length of the fiber, although extreme length is neither necessary nor desirable for most purposes. Chrysotile occurs as cross-fiber veins, in which the asbestos fibers are approximately' at right angles to the vein walls, with vein width- or fiber length-seldom exceeding 2 or 3 in.; also as slip-fiber, in which the fibers 'lie in the same plane as the vein or on slippage planes. A cleanly broken vein of cross-fiber has a pearly luster and may range from a deep green or brown color to light shades of yellowish green or cream. When of good quality, the fiber filaments forming the vein may be easily drawn away from their neighbors and exhibit a fine silkiness and pure white color. They may be twisted into a thread and when flexed between thumb and fingers are found to be strong and pliable. BRINE was discovered at Avery Island, La., in 1790, but it was not until 1862 that rock salt was found about 13 ft below surface-the first discovery of rock salt on the continent. Maximum elevation of the island is 152 ft and elevation at the shaft 31 ft. The mining level is 530 ft below elevation at the shaft and the shallowest salt about 12 ft below surface. A shaft was sunk in 1869 when the mining operation started. In 1898 the present shaft was sunk, and the mine has been operated by International Salt Co. ever since.

With each weight increase per lineal yard has come greater difficulty in making a product that would successfully withstand all tests that modern rails must meet. With these facts in mind, and with a sincere desire to produce a rail whose service in track would be satisfactory in all respects, the steelmaker was quick to realize that all of the factors entering into his process would have to be more closely controlled. Control of rail-steel slags was recognized as one of the most important of many interdepending factors. The object of slag control is to hold the slag compositions within a range that gives the best results with respect to economy of production, uniformity of analysis, and quality of the finished rails. The most important component of the slag from the standpoint of these production and quality factors is the ferrous oxide content. This component is a good indicator of the basicity and oxidizing power of the slag, and these largely govern the effect of the slag on the steel. Consequently, the

An equation is derived for calculating approximately the solubility of nitrogen in an alloy steel over a temperature range from 1200" to 1900°C using data on the effects of alloys on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in iron at 1600°C. Calculated values are compared with experimental data. STUDIES involving the solubility of nitrogen in complex iron alloys have been aided by a system devised by Lanenberg for calculating the solubility of nitrogen in ternary and higher alloys of iron at 1600C using available data on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in binary alloys. Calculated nitrogen solubilities agree well with experimental determinations on complex alloys,' and the calculation procedure is useful when experimental data on specific alloys are not required. A method for extending calculations of nitrogen solubilities in alloy steels to temperatures other than 1600°C would be useful because of the paucity of experimental data in this area. Assumptions which must be made to permit this calculation introduce an element of approximation; however, the calculation is useful in cases where a large number of alloys and temperatures are under consideration, and the precision of experimental measurements is not required. The activity coefficient can be freed from the isothermal restriction of Langenberg's calculation if it is assumed that the solution is "regular". This is a reasonably good assumption for solutions of nitrogen in iron alloys, because usually they are dilute and the heat of solution is relatively small. The presence of large amounts of certain alloying elements would make this assumption less tenable.3 One of the properties of a regular solution is: when "f" is the activity coefficient of a solute and "T" is the temperature in OK. If the activity coefficients at temperatures T and T2 are denoted by subscripts 1 and 2 respectively: The activity coefficient of nitrogen in a complex alloy then can be calculated at any temperature from the sum of the effects of the other solutes on the activity coefficient of nitrogen at 1600°C. It will be convenient to incorporate this expression into an equation which will give directly the logarithm of the solubility of nitrogen at any temperature in the presence of alloys. Two constants, the solubility of nitrogen in pure iron at 1600 "C and the partial molar heat of solution of nitrogen in iron are required. The heat of solution value of 1400 cal at 1600 °C quoted by Kubaschewski and vans will be used. The accuracy of the calculation will suffer if the heat of solution should change materially with temperature. In the absence of experimental data on the temperature dependence of this quantity, it will be expedient to restrict the application of the calcula-
