ISOTOPIC tracers have become an important aid in following the progress of chemical processes in the laboratory. It has recently been found possible to utilize a system of naturally existing isotopic tracers to obtain information about the geo- logical history of lead ores. Common lead, such as is found in lead deposits, is a mixture of four stable isotopes having atomic weights 204, 206, 207, and 208. Of these, the last three are identical with the lead isotopes produced as stable end products of the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium: the first, lead-204, is not known to be produced on the surface of the earth by any process. Since uranium and thorium occur in the surface regions of the earth in amounts comparable with lead, and since the half-lives of uranium and thorium isotopes are of the same order as the age of the earth, they produce the radiogenic lead isotopes in amounts com- parable to the amount of nonradiogenic lead present. Every significant exposure of a sample of lead to uranium and thorium will therefore lead to the permanent alteration of the lead isotope ratios in that sample.

PREVIOUS workersl'% ave found that as-quenched ferrous martensites can be plastically deformed at low stresses. They have also found that the stress to obtain small strains can be significantly increased by aging at temperatures up to 150°C. This behavior has been interpreted in two ways: 1) that the deformation at low applied stress is due to internal stresses and thus the aging phenomenon is due to relaxation of the internal stresses;' 2) that the microdeformation arises through the motion of unpinned dislocations and the aging process is the diffusion of carbon to the dislocations to pin them.293 In a recent paper,4 we have shown that under certain conditions the dominant microdeformation mechanism of as-quenched Fe-31Ni marten-site-austenite aggregates is the transformation of retained austenite. Our results on resistance changes during deformation and temperature dependence of the deformation also established that, at temperatures above 300° K, the microdeformation was not due to this transformation. The purpose of this note is to report results of experiments which indicate that explanation 1 is appropriate for this deformation. All results presented here are from conditions where transformation does not make a measurable contribution to the microplastic deformation, in Fe-31Ni-0.002C, or in Fe-29Ni-0.02C-0.25Ti. The experimental techniques that were used for measurement of the plastic deformation are described4 and analyzed5 elsewhere. Fig. 1 shows the microplastic response of 100 pct austenite at 300" and 350° K. The microplastic response of an austenite-martensite aggregate is also given in Fig. 1 and it is seen that, after formation of martensite, the initial plastic deformation occurs at lower stresses. Thus, the softness is not entirely due to retained austenite—the quenched structure can be deformed at lower stresses despite the fact that the macroscopic strength is significantly higher. A result which allows a distinction to be drawn between the alternative explanations for this behavior is derived from aging experiments on the low-carbon alloy containing titanium. We have previously shown4 that the presence of titanium in this alloy reduced the free carbon to a sufficiently low level that thermal stabilization of the austenite-martensite transformation was not detected. Despite this, Fig. 2 shows that the microplastic response is decreased by aging treatments. A similar aging effect in Fe-ZONi, with some titanium, has previously been reported by . Thus, carbon is not necessary for the aging process and explanation 2 is at best incomplete. SOME one once affirmed his great belief in luck, adding that he had found that the harder he worked the more luck he had. Clyde Weed is a firm believer in this method of courting the fugitive lady. He is at work early and late, often leaving his staff at Anaconda's offices at 25 Broadway breathless trying to keep up with the ideas teeming from a fertile brain and the actions those ideas entail. Miles ahead of his assistants much of the time, he still manages to be an agreeable fellow to work with, no small accomplishment as many can testify. Mr. Weed arrived in the world at Moorestown, Mich., on Aug. 8, 1890. Sixteen years later he entered Michigan Agricultural College, a lowly freshman. The following year, with the experience and wisdom expected of a sophomore, he transferred his studies from the reaping of a harvest on the surface of the earth to delving into the deeper, unpredictable bowels of the earth, his studies now shifted to the Michigan College of Mines. Last June his alma mater conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Engineering.

Four areas have been identified as favorable drill site locations for determining whether a suspected porphyry copper deposit exists in Rowe Canyon, NV. Favorability is bated on the similarity to a deposit model constructed from geochemical data for the porphyry copper deposit near Ely. Favorability is defined as the coincident number of positive anomalies for zinc, silver, aresenic, antimony, and iron. The favorable areas coincide with an observed magnetic high and areas in proximity to major faults.

AS the Petroleum Division rounds off the first quarter century since its evolution from technical committee status, there steps to the long line of notable men who have presided over its activities a young man, currently of Tulsa, one Herbert F. Beardmore by name. For one year, as Chairman for 1946, the Division will be his oyster. hi; baby, his responsibility. "Herb" Beardmore was born at Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 6, 1904, and lived there until he was thirteen. Then his family moved to Oklahoma City, and later sent him to the University of Oklahoma, where he graduated in 1925 with a B.S. in engineering geology. His final year in college was the first year in which a petroleum engineering course was taught at the school. Since his course of study so closely paralleled that of a petroleum engineer, he has frequently been spoken of as the first petroleum engineering graduate from the University of Oklahoma. Out of college he went to work as an oil-field roustabout in the Ranger, Texas, field for Jake L. Hamon. This work consisted of all manual labor phases of cable-tool operation and beam-pumping of oil wells. He moved in 1926 to Bartlesville, to become a gas engineer for the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Co., where he was employed in gas-well drilling, gas production, and transportation, mostly in Osage County, Oklahoma.

The Molycorp operation at Mountain Pass, California, is unique in that it is the only place in the world where bastnasite is mined. The orebody is a metamorphic carbonatite; the mineral of importance is bastnasite, a fluocarbonate containing principally cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, and praseodymium, with small amounts of samarium, gadolinium, and europium. In addition, appreciable quantities of barite, calcite, and strontianite are present. Molycorp had mined and processed the bastnasite ore since the early 1950s at a rate of about 100 tpd by a unique hot flotation process in a plant originally used for cyanidation of gold ore. The concentrate was primarily used in high quality glass polishing, lighter flints, ceramics, and in specialty steel making. Then in the early 1960s, Molycorp and the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation developed a solvent extraction process to recover europium from the bulk rare earth concentrates. In 1965 a new SX plant was constructed to produce this material for use as a red phosphor in color television tubes. Because of the demand for this material, a new 500 tpd concentrator was designed and constructed in 9 ½ months. Then, because of a sharply increased demand for europium, the plant was expanded to 1200 tpd only four months after completion of the original construction. The crushing section of the new plant was designed similarly to those portable units used in road construction and arrived on the site in ten major pieces. Foundations were concrete piers; and after their completion, the entire crushing plant composed of primary and secondary crushers, conveyors, and a screen was erected in fourteen days by a crew of ten men assisted by a mobile crane. Pit-run ore is loaded into 35-ton trucks by a 7 yd (5.4 cu m) loader, trans- ported to .the crushing plant, and dumped into the 65 -ton concrete pocket. A 42 in. by 20 ft (1.07 m by 6. 1 m) apron feeder feeds ore to the 30 in. by 42 in. (760 rnrn by 1070 mm) single toggle jaw crusher. Crushed ore is trans- ferred by a scissors conveyor to a 5 ft by 14 ft (1.52 m by 4. 27 m) double- deck screen which produces a final ¾ in. (19 rnrn) product with the oversize being treated in a 4 ¼ ft (1. 3 m) standard cone crusher. Cone crusher product is returned to the first scissors conveyor to join the primary crusher product. Dust collection is by a wet scrubber, and an operator's control room is located to overlook the primary. The entire crushing is in the open, and a 30-ton mobile crane is used for maintenance. Molycorp’s two-stage crushing plant is an excellent example of functional design for a small mining and milling operation.

In a reserve assessment in areas where multiple coal seams lie above drainage or outcrop and where mining options include contour, auger, mountaintop removal and underground methods, the mining technique (or techniques) selected are heavily dependent on both economic and technologic factors. Rapid and accurate calculations utilizing digital terrain modeling, structure isopacs and including factors such as minimum seam heights, reject limits and coal quality are of vital importance in mine planning. The ability to forecast mine development in a "what if" fashion is a powerful tool that now demands computer resources to reduce these time-consuming, often repetitive calculations. Island Creek Coal and Occidental Systems have developed a minicomputer based engineering workstation for local digitizing, plotting, and volumetric calculations to move the computing function from the computer room (with time sharing on a mainframe computer) into a more interactive environment, resulting in a gain in efficiency and productivity for the mine planning process. The workstation is connected to Occidental's mainframe computers allowing data transfer to the host for "CPU-intensive" calculations. This paper reviews the system configuration and describes the operations required for a typical mine planning application.

It has been pointed out in a previous publication' that, for a given strain rate, serrated yielding can be observed only at certain test temperatures. Fig. 1 shows the results obtained for polycrystalline and re-crystallized tantalum, Va group in the periodic table of elements, where serrations in the course of deformation match the decrease of total elongation. However, there was no evidence of repeated yielding when testing molybdenum or tungsten, VIa group, at similar conditions, i.e., annealed and air-cooled samples (serrations have been found in quenched tungsten2). The reason for the observed serrations in the stress-strain curve are dissolved impurities on interstitial sites of the lattice. Of importance is the concentration of oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen, which are in random solution. Two methods to calculate the limiting concentrations for serrated yielding have been evaluated and applied with more or less success in estimating the role of carbon and nitrogen in mild steel.3 J. Friedel4 has given two equations, which determine the upper and lower strain rates i for the appearance of serrations at a certain test temperature: W denotes the binding energy of the interstitial atom, -1 ev for refractory metals;5 e' the portion of continuous strain in the discontinuous stress-strain curve, measured as -3x10-3; b the Burgers vector, c the concentration, see Table 11, in atom fractions; p the dislocation density, -2 X l09 per cm2 at an average stress ?, -15 kp per mm2 at medium strain. k stands for the Boltzmann constant, T for the absolute temperature, and D for the diffusion coefficient. Table I. Eq. [1], for a given strain rate, determines the minimum temperature, and [2] the maximum temperature, below or above which no "dynamic strain-aging" can occur. According to the calculation, which uses the given quantities, serrations should only be observed within the cross-hatched temperature regions in Fig. 1, and this is in good agreement with the experiment. The effect of varying impurity concentrations is indicated schematically in Fig. 2: only Eq. [I] is affected. Setting Eq. [I] equal to [2], one can calculate the limiting concentration cmin which first causes serrations. The second method uses the aging condition by Cottrell and Bilby6,7 \£i/ \ n. a / where n(t) is the number of impurity atoms, which segregate at a dislocation line of 1 cm length after the time t (t in our case is the time between "repeated yield drops" in the serrated curve, or, the time until the above mentioned strain E' is obtained, i.e., -1 sec for medium intensity or serrations). no is the number of impurity atoms in 1 cm3 and A = Qb4ep[(1 + v)/(l - v)], derived from equations given in Ref. 7. p is the shear modulus, 18,800 kp per mm2 for tantalum, 12,200 for molybdenum, AE the tetragonal distortion caused by interstitial impurities in a bcc lattice (approximately 0.4 for both tantalum and molybdenum) and v Poisson's ratio (0.35 for tantalum, 0.30 for molybdenum). From Eq. [3], combined with the condition for a pronounced yield drop as formulated by cottrel16 (at least one impurity atom segregated at the unit length of a dislocation), again a no min, and hence the concentration Cmin can be calculated.

Experimental viscosity data for methane are presented for temperatures from 100 to 340F and pressures from 200 to 8,000 psia. A summary is given of the available data for methane, and a comparison is presented for that data common to the experimental range reported in this paper. Correlation of the data is presented, and predicted values are given for temperatures up to 460F and pressures up to 10,000 psia. INTRODUCTION The increasing ranges of temperature and pressure at which fluids are produced, transferred and processed in the petroleum and chemical industries stress the need for accurate information on physical properties, both for engineering calculation and for improving the methods used to estimate physical properties. A survey of the literature reveals that disagreements between published data on the viscosity of methane are common and that most investigations have been conducted over restricted temperature and pressure ranges. This situation made it desirable to undertake an investigation with a scope common to most of the literature data available. APPARATUS AND MATERIALS The apparatus used in this investigation was the capillary tube viscometer'described by Dolan,10 with modifications introduced in the general design and operation of the instrument. It has an effective pressure range from 14.7 to 10,000 psia and a temperature range from room temperature to 400F. The design of the viscometer is based on the establishment of a manometric head between two vessels containing the test fluid and a volume of mercury. The reservoirs are connected by a capillary tube through which the test fluid flows and a tube through which mercury flows. A pressure gradient is established by elevating one of the vessels above the other, the resulting flow of mercury displacing the test fluid through the capillary. The schematic diagram of the system (Fig. 1) shows the arrangement of the equipment auxiliary to the viscometer. The density cells assembly (E, Fig. 1) was not used in this investigation since reliable data are available on methane. 23 The assembly consists of a bank of eight 316 stainless steel pycnometers. Experimental values of the density of a natural gas19 and i-butane14 samples have been obtained for pressures up to 8,000 psia and temperatures up to 340F. The methane used was obtained from the Southern California Gas Co. Mass spectrometric analysis showed a composition of 99.8 percent CH4, 0.1 percent C2H6 and 0.1 percent C3H8. EXPERIMENTAL VALUES AND ACCURACY OF DATA Determinations were carried out at several temperatures. With the temperature in the cabinet controlled at a given level, a series of runs were made at various pressures. To establish pressures lower than that obtained from the methane cylinder, it was necessary to vent the gas slowly to the atmosphere until the desired pressure was reached. The consistency of the test run time for a particular condition can be used as a criterion for the accuracy of the data. A further check is obtained by comparison of the viscosity values obtained using different driving heads. To establish the instrument's reproducibility, a large number of runs were made at three completely different conditions of temperature and pressure. Data obtained were analyzed statistically to determine the most reliable value for the variance of the experimental data. It was found that the variances of the data taken at different experimental conditions were not statistically equivalent, but they were small. The largest variance was found at 8,000 psia and 100F, where the standard deviation was 0.385 micropoise. Therefore, 99.9 percent of the data can be expected to fall within 1.15 micropoises of the population mean, except for the intervention of systematic errors in operation.

In view of the circumstance that very few important changes have been made within the last 15 or 20 years in the equipment of rod and wire mills, the description of a new process introduced by Grenville Mellen, of LleweIIyn Park, N. J., to take the place of the present laborious system of producing rods of lead, zinc, brass, copper, aluminum, etc., may be interesting to members of the Institute. This new process consists in the production of cast rods at one operation in a small continuous casting machine. The hot liquid metal is transferred from the melting crucibles directly into an endless chain of mold blocks in the machine, where solidification takes place, and the rod comes out continuously in a solid form at one end as long as the molten metal is supplied. The operation of these mold blocks so as to produce a solid rod of uniform structure constitutes an important part of Mr. Mellen's invention. The machine (Figs. 1 and 2), 12 ft. in height over all, 2 by 3 ft. in horizontal cross-sectional area, and 6,000 Ib. in weight, has a framework of cast iron, holding in position two endless chains of mold blocks, which are made in sections and join in center alignment. The mold orifice is made up of these mold sections, into which the liquid metal flows. The molding chains are composed of steel blocks, grooved on one face to form the molding cavity, and linked together with flexible joints. Each block is carried on four rollers which guide the chain around the end sprockets and carry it in its course through the machine. The accuracy of alignment requisite to the production of a perfect rod in the mold groove formed by these sections is secured by careful machine work, and by building the four ways, down which the alignment takes place, so that two of the sides are fixed permanently, whiIe the opposite sides are held to their position by spring pressure. The guides carrying the molds, while in casting position, are water-cooled square tubes. The length of this machine is somewhat indeterminate. A certain amount of both time and cooling surface is required to solidify the metal jn the mold; and one may either use a long molding chain and run it fast, or a shorter chain and run it correspondingly slower. The transient one-dimensional heat-conduction equation is solved for two semi-infinite media, at different initial temperatures, brought into (poor) thermal contact. It is shown that the two interface temperatures gradually approach the well-known, instantaneously assumed, common interface temperature of the case of zero contact resistance. The present analysis, with slight modifications, may be used in fair approximation also for the class of problems involving a change of phase. One particular application of the boundary value problem solved in this paper concerns the determination of the temerature distribution in metal castings and molds.P This problem has been treated extensively by analytical methods (see e.g., the literature listed in Refs. 1 to 4) by electrical analogs (see e.g., Refs. 11 to 14) and also by experimental methods (see the literature listed in Refs. 4, 5), but prior to the work of Pellini and Ruddle the experimental results were rather unreliable. Immediate motivation for the work described in this paper was to better understand the results of Pellini,' which are typified by the curves of Fig. 1. Pellini cast 20-in. high, 7-in. sq steel ingots into cast-iron molds of various thicknesses. He measured the temperatures at mid-height, at a number of stations in the casting and the mold, and obtained the cooling curves shown in Fig. 1. The most conspicuous thing about Fig. 1 is the large temperature discontinuity at the interface between casting and mold, due presumably to the shrinking away of the casting from the wall and the attendant creation of an airgap, as the casting cools. Such a contact resistance slows down the anticipated freezing rate; an analytical prediction of this is of much interest in foundry practice. The determination of the effect of contact resistance in the presence of a change of phase will be dealt with, by an approximate method, in a separate paper.' In the present paper the much simpler problem is considered in which there is contact resistance but no change of phase. This problem frequently arises in the analysis of aircraft structures.+ It can initial temperature, and may be regarded as semi-infinite. We suppose the thermal properties in the two media to be time, temperature, and space independent; there are no sources or sinks within the media. In Fig. 2(a) we illustrate, schematically, the case of no contact resistance. The semi-infinite media "0" and "2:' initially at temperatures 8 (- m) and 8(+ -), respectively, are brought into contact at time t =0. A common interface temperature 8,i = is instantaneously established, and thereafter remains constant. Temperature curves are drawn for three instants of time. When there is contact resistance between the two media, the temperature equalization occurs as sketched in Fig. 2(b). Fig. 2(c) illustrates a temperature curve, using the dimension-less notation Barber-Weiner-Boley6 have stated the equations [23a, b] given below, which govern the heat transfer in the two media, and solved them for a rather complicated special case. In their example both media "O" and "2" are finite, are insulated at their far ends, and there is steady heat input into medium 2. In Eq. [27] we give the general solution of the most important special case, where the two media are semi-infinite and there are no sources or sinks. In this case the results may be stated in simple closed form. In Fig. 3, to be discussed in the next section, we illustrate the variation of the interface temperature when steel at 2760" is brought into contact with iron at 100". This example, if we disregard the effect of the heat of fusion, is comparable to Pellini's experimental results, Fig. 1. (Unfortunately, however, experimental determination of the interface temperatures was difficult to carry out, and hence Fig. 1 is not very accurate near the interface.) In Figs. 4 and 5 of the following section, we similarly compare Pellini's sandcasting tests with analytical results for the case where steel at 2760" is brought into contact with sand at 100". It will be pointed out that, insofar as the interface temperatures are concerned, heat of fusion has a minor effect, and so the present approximation, with small modifications, may be

Known CsCl-type phases in transition metal alloys are shown to be formed preferentially at an electron concentration of approximately 6; a tetragonally distorted version of the CsCl structure is stable at -e/a = 6.5. The relationship of the distortion to electron concentration is verified by experimental data for the quasibinary systems Time ,Os) , Ti(Re,Ir), and Ti(Re,Pt) and the ternary system Ti-Ru-Rh. It was noted some years ago1j2 that the occurrence of CsC1-type ordered structures in equiatomic binary alloys, AB, of transition metals correlates with the location of the component elements in the periodic table. One of the components, A, must be to the left and the other component. B, must be to the right of the chromium group. It was pointed out2 that the CsCl structure does not occur in CrFe. is metastable in VFe,3 and is stable in TiFe up to high temperatures, and that this progressively increasing stability may correspond to an increase in electron transfer between the two components and to a correlated decrease of the magnetic moment associated with the iron atoms. Such a decrease was in fact later demonstrated by Nevitt. 4 The binary CsC1-type phases that are formed by a transition metal with either another transition metal or a lanthanide are listed in Table I. Thirty-three of these phases occur at an average electron concentration (average number of electrons outside of closed shells) of e/a = 6. The five phases that are formed at an electron concentration of e/a = 5.5 appear to be borderline cases. This is suggested for instance by the fact that TiRe is bcc. without any long-range order, while TiTc (at the same electron concentration) has a CsCl ordered structure. Six of the undistorted CsCl phases formed by transition metals with one another have an average electron concentration of e/a = 6. 5. Table I. With the exception of Zr4,Rhs4 and Hf48Rh52. the B component in these phases is a first long-period transition metal, i.e.. iron or cobalt. TiNi. with an electron concentration of e/n = 7, appears to undergo transformation at around room temperature to a more complex ordered struct~re.~ The five other CsCl structures known to occur at e/a = 6.5 have either scandium or a lanthanide metal as the A component; the difference in the elec-tronegativity and in the e/a ratio between the component elements is in these phases very large, A(e/a) - 7, and they may be expected to have a rather strong ionic bond component. Presumably the ionic bond stabilizes the CsCl-type structure at the equiatomic composition and it overrides the electron concentration requirement. When the B element is not from the first long period and the A component is not a rare earth metal. equiatomic (AB) alloys of transition metals with an average electron concentration of e/a = 6.5 in most cases have a crystal structure closely related to the CsC1-type, but slightly distorted tetragonally, Table I. This was first found6 for VRu, NbRu. and TaRu. It was noted6 that the undistorted CsCl structure is also stable in the three systems. but at a lower electron concentration, near e/a = 6. In these systems this requires a deviation from equiatomic stoichiometry. which is otherwise ideally suited for the CsC1-type structure. A similar situation was later found in the Ti-Rh7 and the Ti-Ir systems. 8 The Ti-Rh alloys undergo a second distortion and become orthorhombic when the rhodium content becomes somewhat larger than 50 pct. As mentioned previously. TiRe does not have the CsC1-type ordered structure. In order to investigate how close TiRe is to the borderline of stability of the

Recently the S-curves for 30 to 40 alloy steels have been pub1ished.l.2 These steels show individual characteristics, which make each additional S-curve of great interest. There are important differences in the mechanism of the transformation process, the type of transformation product, and the influence of alloying elements. Steels of the same general alloy composition may possess such variable characteristics with regard to the length of time of isothermal transformation that an S-curve for each heat of steel may be desirable. In the present work the isothermal transformation of a steel having the following composition and grain size was studied: 0.29 per cent carbon; 0.21 manganese; 0.026 phosphorus; 0.017 sulphur; 0.056 silicon; 1.45 chromium; 3.25 nickel; austenite grain size, 7. The progress of the isothermal transformation was followed by several different methods, including hardness measurements, dilatometer observations, and examinations of the microstructure. It was not expected that these methods would be in precise agreement.3 Accordingly, the changes in microstructure and hardness were given additional weight in determining the initial stage of transformation and the dilatometer measurements were relied on in estimating the completion of the process. The beginning of transformation was indicated by I per cent of transformation products and the end of transformation by about 99 per cent. The reproducibility of the various methods in the ranges of highest sensitivity was checked by several observations at each time and temperature. The steel used in this investigation was annealed for 24 hr, at 925°C. Macroetching revealed no serious segregation. The specimens for the metallographic and hardness investigations were 1¼ by ½ by ? in. Wires attached to the samples were used for handling. instead of tongs, to avoid chilling. The specimens were heated at 845°C. for ½ hr. and quenched into constant-temperature salt baths held at various temperatures from 205' to 650°C. The time required to transfer the specimens was found to be about 1½ sec., and nearly 5 sec. more was required for them to come to the temperature of the bath. After various lengths of time in the constant-temperature baths the specimens were quenched in water at 2I°C. The specimens were cut in half for the metallographic examination, to provide a surface free from decarburization. To determine the beginning and end of the transformation the percentage of transformation determined metallographically and by hardness was plotted against time. A planimeter was used in the metallographic determination. Recently the S-curves for 30 to 40 alloy steels have been pub1ished.l.2 These steels show individual characteristics, which make each additional S-curve of great interest. There are important differences in the mechanism of the transformation process, the type of transformation product, and the influence of alloying elements. Steels of the same general alloy composition may possess such variable characteristics with regard to the length of time of isothermal transformation that an S-curve for each heat of steel may be desirable. In the present work the isothermal transformation of a steel having the following composition and grain size was studied: 0.29 per cent carbon; 0.21 manganese; 0.026 phosphorus; 0.017 sulphur; 0.056 silicon; 1.45 chromium; 3.25 nickel; austenite grain size, 7. The progress of the isothermal transformation was followed by several different methods, including hardness measurements, dilatometer observations, and examinations of the microstructure. It was not expected that these methods would be in precise agreement.3 Accordingly, the changes in microstructure and hardness were given additional weight in determining the initial stage of transformation and the dilatometer measurements were relied on in estimating the completion of the process. The beginning of transformation was indicated by I per cent of transformation products and the end of transformation by about 99 per cent. The reproducibility of the various methods in the ranges of highest sensitivity was checked by several observations at each time and temperature. The steel used in this investigation was annealed for 24 hr, at 925°C. Macroetching revealed no serious segregation. The specimens for the metallographic and hardness investigations were 1¼ by ½ by ? in. Wires attached to the samples were used for handling. instead of tongs, to avoid chilling. The specimens were heated at 845°C. for ½ hr. and quenched into constant-temperature salt baths held at various temperatures from 205' to 650°C. The time required to transfer the specimens was found to be about 1½ sec., and nearly 5 sec. more was required for them to come to the temperature of the bath. After various lengths of time in the constant-temperature baths the specimens were quenched in water at 2I°C. The specimens were cut in half for the metallographic examination, to provide a surface free from decarburization. To determine the beginning and end of the transformation the percentage of transformation determined metallographically and by hardness was plotted against time. A planimeter was used in the metallographic determination. INTRODUCTION The first commercial plant in the world to successfully produce pellets from manganese ore fines is the ICOMI pelletizing facility in northern Brazil. The main purpose of this paper is to describe the manganese pelletizing process that was developed through a cooperative R & D program by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and ICOMI, i.e., Industria e Commercio de Minerios, S. A. The process combines heavy- media and gravity separation, reduction roasting, magnetic separation, and pelletizing on a straight-grate indurating machine. It produces high-grade manganese pellets from reviously unsalable low-grade ore fines at a rate of 20,000 tonnes (1) per month. The physical properties of the manganese pellets are comparable to those of iron ore pellets. The pelletizing plant, built at a cost of about 18 million dollars, is part of an ICOMI complex that includes manganese ore mining, an ore-washing plant, and railroad and port facilities, as well as two town sites. These two towns, one at the mine and the other at the port, each with complete community services, were built by ICOMI to serve the needs of over 1500 employees that operate the industrial complex. To give an idea of the magnitude of the investment represented by this complex, the cost up to 1957 to develop the mine and supporting services and social infrastructure was over 100 million dollars. It should be borne in mind that the above capital cost figures are in dollars of the years during which the respective projects were initiated and completed.

Equilibrium constants have been determined for the jeaction C (in steel) + H2O = CO + H2 as a function of carbon content (0.013 to 0.74 ujt pct) and temperature (1200° to 1800°F) by using a flow system in which the water-vapor content of various gas mixtures containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen was systematically controlled. The equilibrium partial-pressure ratio K1 = PcoPH2/PH2O was obtained for two low-carbon steels and four Fe-C binaries from a series of runs made at each temperature. By comparison of Ki with the analogous ratio for the reaction C (graphite) + H2O = CO + H2, the activity of carbon in steel (ac) was comDuted for each temperature and carbon content studied. From these data values of the equilibrium constants for two other carburization-decarburiza-tion reactions of importance were estimated. The chemical compositions of the two steels and four Fe-C binaries used are given in Table I. Specimens of Steel E were cut from a 0.035-in.-thick commercially box-annealed and temper-rolled lot of a low-carbon low-metalloid steel. Steel F was a commercially hot-rolled rimmed steel that was cold-reduced at the Laboratory to a 0.059-in. thickness. Fe-C binaries A, B, C, and D were vacuum-melted and poured, hot-rolled, pickled, and cold-reduced at the Laboratory to furnish specimens 0.035 in. thick. Sheet specimens were cut from all lots to approximately 3/4 by 3 in. by gage and were vapor-degreased with trichlo-roethylene and weighed before heat treatment. Two of the aluminum-alloy systems previously studied-the alumi-num-titanium and the aluminum-chromium-exhibit a peritectic reaction at the extreme aluminum end of the diagram. Preliminary work indi-cated that the aluminum-zirconium and certain other aluminum systems were similar in this respect. The present paper, the twentieth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, reports the results of a recent investigation of equilibrium relations in aluminum-zirconium alloys of high purity, which confirm the preliminary observations. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS There has been only one investigation of the aluminum end of the aluminum-zirconium system. Sykes1 prepared and studied alloys containing 0 to 70 per cent Zr. The lowering of the freezing point of aluminum by the addition of zirconium was found to be very little, if any (less than 2°C.). He placed the solid solubility of zirconium in aluminum at room temperature between 0.57 and 0.97 per cent. A few other investigators have attempted to determine the com-position of the intermetallic compounds occurring in this system. Hönigschmid2 obtained the compound ZrAl3 as a by-product during the preparation of ZrSi2. He made no attempt to prepare other aluminum-zir-conium compounds. Weiss and Newmann3 prepared an alloy by heating aluminum with a double fluoride of potassium and zirconium. When this alloy was treated consecutively with caustic soda and hydrochloric acid, there was a residue, which contained approximately 72 per cent Zr and 28 per cent Al (Zr3Al4). Marden and Rich4 prepared an alloy in the same way, treated it with caustic soda, and obtained a residue of silver-white crystals, which contained 70 per cent Zr and 30 per cent Al (Zr3Al4).

When a hole is made in a stressed solid, such as rock pierced by mine openings, equilibrium of the solid is destroyed. To restablish that equilibrium the stress condition in the rock surrounding the opening becomes rearranged. This rearrangement may or may not develop local stresses in the vicinity of the opening which exceed the elastic strength of the rock. Since stability of the opening depends, therefore, on the strength of the naturally occurring rock surrounding the opening, this rock is an engineering material of construction, and all rock affected by the associated opening or system of openings may be considered a structure. The term invert is chosen to describe the formation of the structure built from the inside, as it were, and a consequence of mining rather than an entity built for a purpose. By definition, an invert structure is formed when openings are made underground and is com- posed of that material on the solid side of a rock-air interface wherein the stress condition is affected by the associated opening or system of openings. The shape of an invert structure is never clearly defined; the skin of the structure may be mapped, and even described, but the boundary of the structure within the solid rock mass must be arbitrarily set.

ELASTIC constants of yttrium and eleven of the rare earth elements have been measured. This has been accomplished by measuring the propagation velocities of ultrasonic pulses. The velocity measurements were made by noting the elapsed time between an applied pulse and the appearance of successive echoes. The pulse-echo technique has become relatively common, and the basis of the measurement is outlined in several standard tests, e.g., Heuter and Bolt.1 Two important assumptions are made when using this method for the determination of elastic moduli. First, the pulse is assumed to propagate as a plane wave. To justify this assumption, the cross section of the test specimen should be large compared to the wave length of the transmitted pulse. For these measurements on the rare earth elements the minimum cross section wave length ratio was about 20. A second assumption which must be made when using polycrystalline specimens is that the grains are sufficiently numerous and randomly oriented so that the specimen may be approximated as elasti-cally isotopic. The grain size in the as-cast specimens which were used is believed to be sufficiently fine for this approximation, and the degree of preferred orientation is believed to be small. Supporting this viewpoint is the fact that elasticity measurements by the pulse-echo technique on as-cast specimens of other metals give results which are in satisfactory agreement with values obtained by other techniques. Hence, it is believed that the measured elasticity values for the rare earth elements are not apt to be seriously in error due to the assumption of elastic isotopy. The apparatus used in this determination was a modified Sperry Reflectoscope with a precisely calibrated time base circuit. Piezoelectric transducers were used both to generate the pulse and to detect the echoes. X-cut quartz crystals were used for the longitudinal modes, and Y-cut quartz crystals were used for the shear modes. Frequencies of 2.25 and 5 megacycles per sec were employed. Most of the specimens were 2.5 to 5.0 cm in length. Results Table I is a tabulation of the measured propagation velocities of longitudinal waves and of shear waves, together with densities obtained by Sped- ding, Daane, and Herrmann2 from lattice parameter measurements. The shear modulus, Poisson's ratio, and Young's modulus were calculated from the data in Table I through use of the following relationships: µ = pv32 [1] s=2-(vb/vs)2/2[1-(vb/vs)2] [2] and Y= 2µ(l+s) [3] where s is the shear modulus, Y is the Young's modulus, s is Poisson's ratio, p is the density, V0 is the longitudinal wave velocity, and v, is the shear wave velocity. The calculated quantities are shown in Table 11. Compressibility values can be computed from the relationship and the computed values may be compared with measured values obtained by Bridgman.8 Table III lists the data for such a comparison. The agreement is satisfactory, being particularly good for neodymi- um and gadolinium, poor for samarium, and intermediate for the other elements. Some variation is expected since Bridgman's measurements are isothermal, whereas the present measurements are adiabatic. In addition there may be some effect due to small variations in purity. Though most of the rare earth metals measured by Bridgman and all of the metals used in the present measurements were prepared at this laboratory, minor purity variations might exist since the samples came from different lots. Also, any imperfections such as dislocations, vacancies, voids, grain boundaries, microcracks, etc., should contribute to the volume change of a com-

The title of this short paper necessarily implies that friction articles comprise a distinct and unique field and are different from the other metal-powder articles, such as bearings, electrical contacts, and magnets. However, this distinction is rather hard to define in that it is really one of degree and not Of kind. It would appear that the main distinction is that friction are are articles of rather large pressing area. In other words, they are articles in which the area Of the mold in which the metal powder is pressed is relatively large. Other articles made from meta1 powders are generally of rather small area, usually a few square inches, while in friction articles the area ranges up to several hundred square inches. The satisfactory production of meta1-powder friction articles involves many production problems and a large number Of these are accentuated by the large area' Since it is impossible in the short space of this Paper to describe adequately all the problems involved, I have thought it best to merely mention some Of them and to place particular emphasis upon a problem that is common to all metal-powder articles, although it is of greater importance in the making of friction articles. This problem has to do with the effect On the properties of a friction article of small variations in the composition. However, before discussing the problems, it is probably appropriate that some mention be made of the limitations on the use of friction articles. Most engineers are familiar with the general field that can be characterized as constituted by clutch facings and brake linings, and undoubtedly have heard many stories of how metal-powder friction articles have had a service life 10 times as long as nonmetallic friction materials, and of instances where metal-powder friction articles have operated satisfactorily where no other material could be used. These instances should not be regarded as criteria for the assumption that metal-powder friction articles are capable of universal use in the friction field and will always outperform other materials. On the contrary, metal-powder friction articles are unsuitable for numerous applications, either on a performance or on a cost basis. Metal-powder friction articles will not replace wooden block brakes for wagon wheels nor cast-iron brake shoes for railway car wheels, to mention just two obvious examples. Metallic friction articles cannot be used where they must act as heat insulatorsl for they have a relatively high thermal conductivity as compared with asbestos. This is a detriment in some uses, as in certain airplane brakes having hydraulic actuators provided with rubber seals. The metallic friction material readily transfers the heat developed at the braking surface back through the material to the rubber seal and destroys it. Within its limited field, metal-powder friction material has proved satisfactory, but many problems are involved in the Selection of the proper material to use in an application and in the commercial pro-
