Leaching or solution mining, a relatively simple and economical process for beneficiating metallic ores, is likely to find increasing application in the treatment of low-grade ores that are impractical to mine by any other means. This process may be carried out in two different ways: 1) dump leaching, where the ore is moved from its original location to be leached at another site; and 2) In-situ leaching, where the ore is leached in place by introducing the leach solution at the top, letting it flow down through the ore under gravity, and then recovering it plus the dissolved metals it contains. Whichever leaching method is used, it is almost always necessary to break up the ore before leaching. In this paper a study is reported which indicates that rock broken by an explosion-in particular, an underground nuclear explosion-is significantly more amenable to leaching then is rock broken by other methods. These results suggest that the leaching speed and efficiency could be increased by nuclear fracturing of the ore. Not only would the leach time be shortened, but the resulting increase in strength or richness of the solutions would decrease plant installation expense as well as reduce pumping and processing costs. A considerable fund of experience has been accumulated in the course of several hundred experimental underground nuclear explosions, so that the gross results of any given nuclear explosion can now be predicted with a fair degree of confidence.' From this knowledge it seems clear that, under the proper conditions, large ore bodies can be fractured much more economically-macroscopically speaking-by nuclear explosions than by other methods. The present study concentrates on smaller scale effects that is, the cracks in the chunks of rock broken by the explosion-and shows that here too, in the microscopic domain, there are important advantages to nuclear fracturing. The intense shock produced by the very fast acting, high-brisance nuclear explosive fractures the rock in a way that should significantly improve its leachability. Experimental Procedure This study compared rocks broken by nuclear explosives with rocks produced by conventional mining, quarrying, or core drilling. The test samples, granite chunks 6 to 8 in. on a side, plus core sections, came from the area of the Hardhat*2 nuclear explosion and were taken both before and after the explosion. For comparison, several samples of quarried granite were obtained from a local gravestone monument company. The general procedure was to soak the test samples in leaching solution and then determine the extent of penetration. A standard commercial copper leaching solution was used (10 gpl Cu, 10 gpl H2SO4, 5 gpl ferric Fe, 15 gpl total Fe, pH about 1.5), to which a water-soluble penetrant dye, Zyglo 1-c, had been added. Details of the procedure were as follows: 1) Sample leached in solution containing Zyglo penetrant dye. 2) Washed with water. 3) Air-dried. 4) Cut with granite wire saw. 5) One face polished with granite monument polish. 6) Sent directly to be photographed, or heated at 110°C for 2 hr and then sent to be photographed. 7) Photographed under ultraviolet light to show crack patterns. Results After 10 days of leaching at 70-75°F, the samples were removed from the solution, washed, dried, and cut in half with a granite wire saw to study the penetration of the leach solution. Since the Zyglo dye in the leach is visible under ultraviolet light, the degree of penetration of the leach (and hence the cracks in the samples) can be studied on photographs of the crosscut samples made under ultraviolet light. The photos in [Fig. 1] show how the leach solution penetrated various representative samples. Of the 71 rock samples examined, fractures were most frequent and prominent in samples from the rubble produced by the nuclear explosion [(Fig. 1D)]. Fracturing was less apparent in shaft-mined rock [(Fig. 1B)], still less evident in drift-mined rock [(Fig. 1C)], and practically nonexistent in cored or quarried specimens [(Fig. 1A)]. The samples in [Fig. lA-C] were from the same general area as the nuclear explosion, but they were obtained before the explosion. Results of the crack studies are summarized in [Table 1]. The Zyglo-treated leach solution penetrated the test samples at the rate of about 1/2 mm during the first hour, 1 mm by the end of 4 hr, 2 to 3 mm in 12 hr, and 4 to 6 mm in 10 days, showing a progressively slower rate with time.

Activation of sphalerite with silver ions results from the exchange of two Ag ions for one Zn ion in the sphalerite lattice. The exchange is proportional to the logarithm of time and proceeds until either of the reactants is consumed. Sodium cyanide prevents the activation of sphalerite by controlling the ratio [Zn++]/[Ag+]' in solution. If sphalerite has already been activated with excess silver, cyanide ions can deactivate sphalerite provided oxygen is present. SOLUBLE: silver salts are effective activators for flotation of sphalerite with potassium ethyl xan-thate as collector.* Since sphalerite takes up large quantities of silver ions rapidly,2-4 investigation of this system appeared fruitful for studying the mechanism of sphalerite activation and deactivation. Experimental data presented here comprise studies of the mechanism and rates of activation and deactivation of sphalerite with silver and cyanide ions. A 20-lb sample of sphalerite from Ottawa County, Oklahoma, was handpicked, crushed, screened, hy-drosized to produce a 65/100-mesh fraction, and purified by electrostatic separation. The sphalerite was then leached with benzene and absolute ethyl alcohol to remove possible organic contaminants and with 0.1 M NaCN to remove any copper that might have been picked up during screening. The benzene had been specially purified by grinding with fine sphalerite for 12 hr to remove trace impurities that might have had a specific affinity for sphalerite. Ii'inally, the mineral was washed, dried in flowing nitrogen, and stored in large ground-glass stoppered weighing bottles under a small nitrogen pressure. The specific surface of two samples from the 65/100-mesh sphalerite stock, measured by krypton gas adsorption," was 420 cm2 per g. Compared with spheres of the same size and specific gravity, the prepared mineral had five times as much surface. Results of a wet chemical analysis and of a spectro-graphic study are given in Table I. Manganese, nickel, tin, indium, thallium, cobalt, and magnesium were not detected spectrographically. All solutions were preparid by -adding reagent-grade chemicals to conductivitv water. which had been previously saturated with the desired gases. Nitrogen and oxygen were purified, but no attempt was made to purify the laboratory air. Radioanalysis was carried out with prepurified Ag110 tracer obtained from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The complete decay scheme for Ae is complex. Its primary emissions are 0.09 and 0.55 mev ß rays and 1.48 mev y raysB and its half-life is believed to be 270 days. In preparation of solutions of AgNO3, the amount of Ag110 added was negligible compared to that of the inert silver. Abstraction of silver from solution by sphalerite was measured after agitation of 1.5 g sphalerite with 20 ml of solution in 50-ml pyrex flasks. All sample preparations were carried out in a dry box so that the proper atmosphere could be maintained. After the mineral had been agitated in the silver nitrate solution, an aliquot of the solution and a sample of the wet mineral were transferred to separate counting vials and weighed. The solid sample was dried and re-weighed and the activity in both vials measured by means of a scintillation counter. With scintillation counting it is possible to count y radiation from the solid and liquid, a distinct advantage over the older ß-ray counting techdiques.4 All measurements of silver activity were made using a sodium-iodide well-type scintillation counter. The amount of zinc in solution was measured colorimet-rically by the monocolor method of Sandell.7 Activation Studies Exchange Between Zinc Ions and Silver Ions During Activation: The increase of Zn++ in solution during activation with Ag+ is shown in Table 11. These data indicate a replacement of one Zn++ by two Ag+. Analysis of a separate two-month agitation test indicated that the replacement of Zn++ by Ag+ was, as expected, in the molar ratio of 2.0.

Discussion of the paper of EDGAR L. NEWHOUSE, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin: No. 92, August, 1914, pp. 1801 to. 1806. G. C. RIDDELL, East Helena, Mont.-As nearly as I can recall at the present moment, there are only four or five large plants on the continent where the lead on charge is carried in the neighborhood of 40 per cent. These are at Herculaneum, Collinsville, and Federal, Ill.; Trail, B.. C.; and East Helena, Mont. Our object at the latter point is to smelt a maximum amount of Coeur d'Alêne lead sulphides in as compact and self-fluxing a charge as possible, and to this end we are now smelting a mixture that at times carries up to 42 per cent. lead. The monotony of producing the 7,000 tons of bullion shipped each month to. the Omaha and Chicago refineries is relieved somewhat by the fact that the 15,000 tons monthly of Coeur d'Alêne ores that are com-ing to us carry enough zinc to provide the one-half slag used with from 6.5 to 7.5 per cent. zinc clay after day. During the month of March, 1914, three lead furnaces in continous operation, each 136 in. long, averaged 249 tons per furnace clay, exclusive of coke and slag shells, which is smelting at the rate of 5.5 tons per square foot of tuyère area. To date. utility company underground storage of gas has generally been restricted to depleted dry gas fields. The Playa del Rey project is probably the first to successfully store gas in a partially depleted oil reservoir with the recovery of large volumes of pas at high rates as the main objective. Oil recovery has been a secondary consideration. Problems encountered unusual to those of storage in a dry gas zone were: (1) the removal and retardation of formation of emulsion. (2) the upstructure movement of fluid during withdrawal periods which formed fluid blocks, and (3) reservoir shrinkage resulting from encroachment of edgewater. The solution of these problems as outlined in the paper has resulted in increasing the withdrawal rate from the original design capacity of 4,000 Mcf per hour to the current 10.000 Mcf per hour. Additional increase is anticipated as the operations continue. Migration. reservoir performance. operational procedure and a historical record are included to make this a resume of the project from its war-time inception in 1942 to the first of 1952. INTRODUCTION The Playa del Rey underground gas storage project is probably the first project in which gas has been stored in a partially depleted oil reservoir, with the recovery of large volumes of gas at high rates as the main objective and the recovery of oil a secondary consideration. Problems unusual to those of storage in dry gas zones have made this a pioneer endeavor. The total storage capacity of approximately 1,500,000 Mcf of this reservoir is small in comparison with other underground gas storage projects. However. by study and experiment the deliverability into transmission lines. operating at pressures in excess of 150 lbs., has been nearly tripled in the past three years. to the current 10.000 Mcf per hour late, without the use of compression. It is anticipated this rate will gradually increase as additional fluid is removed from the formation. LOCATION AND HISTORY Playa del Key is located on Santa Monica Bay about two miles south of the beach commuity of Venice and 15 miles southwest of the renter of the City city Los Angeles. Fig. 1. The discovery well was completed at 6,194 ft in 1929. An upper zone at 3,905 ft was found on June 18. 1930. Townlot development was very rapid and by the end of 1930 there were 141 producing wells in the field. The Union Oil Co. completed a lower zone well south of the Townlot Field in May, 1931, which was believed to be an extension, until additional drilling of about 50 wells during 1934 and 1935 indicated this area to be a separate accumulation as shown on Fig. 2. The lower oil horizon, which is now the storage zone, had no original gas cap and is believed to be a continental detrital deposit of conglomerate that accumulated in valleys and depressions of a weathered schist high. which later subsided and was overlain by an impervious nodular shale. This type of formation has rapid variation of porosity. permeability and thickness due to lack of sorting action common to marine deposition. and the uneven surface of the original schist high. Production was limited on the upstructure sides by the pinching out of the conglomerate, and downstructure by edgewater. Unrestricted production, together with high permeabilities, led to large wastage of gas from this new area as facilities were not available for transport of gas to market. The decline was very rapid and by 1942 the portion of the new area south of Ballona Creek was nearly depleted. CONSTRUCTION of a ground-water supply includes many operations, which do not end with completion of facilities. Evaluations must be made of the quality of water in various areas and the history of production. Following an analysis of geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data there must be an exploratory drilling program and a study of resulting information. When the well is completed a continuous survey of operating records and basic data is necessary, since designs for future wells are varied as more data becomes available for those already completed. As the following discussion must be limited to a single undertaking, the customary procedure will be outlined for development and construction of a ground-water supply in which more than three wells are involved. Parts of this procedure are applicable for all ground-water supplies. Three possible sites were selected for construction of a paper mill. The problem was that the industry daily required approximately 15 million gallons of water of the best quality available; however, if water of the best quality were not available in the desired amount, water of a poorer quality could be used up to half the required amount, about 7 million gallons. In the preliminary survey approximately 1500 to 2000 square miles were covered for each site. Collected data consisted of several hundred electric logs of oil and gas wells; reports by the U. S. Geological Survey on ground-water resources of localities in and near the area; unpublished records of several hundred water wells including chemical analyses of the water produced and drillers' logs of the wells; records of periodic water-level measurements made in observation wells by the USGS; topographic maps drawn up by USGS and by army engineers; and highway and county road maps. A preliminary report based on study and evaluation of these data was presented to the client, recommending the site with the most favorable and economical ground-water conditions. The study indicated that water of the quality and quantity desired could be developed. In this particular area there were indications that the aquifer could be separated into two zones con- taining water of different chemical character. This chemical character varied somewhat with area, but principally with depth, a factor which later proved an economic advantage in design of the well field. After studying the preliminary report, the client weighed other economic factors as well as ground-water advantages and selected a plant site. Authority was given to proceed with detailed study of the chosen area. Evaluation of preliminary data concerning the area indicated that it should be supplemented with additional information derived from actual exploratory drilling and testing. A flexible plan of exploratory drilling was devised so that data obtained as each test hole was drilled could be correlated with existing data and additional test holes could be located and drilled accordingly. Specific data to be obtained from each test hole were: samples of all formations penetrated; the driller's descriptive log of formations; electric logging surveys; one or more samples of water from selected water-bearing formations; temperature; and water levels and their recovery after periods of production. The area studied in such detail was approximately 400 square miles. Choice of location for the original test holes was based on the preliminary study. The pattern for these test holes was designed to require a minimum number of holes and to allow for interpolation of data between two, three, and four holes. Geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data gathered after completion of the first four test holes showed that the north section was the most desirable in the area, which was then reduced from the original 400 square miles to about 150 square miles for more detailed and intensive study. On the basis of findings from the current test a tentative well field was laid out and a drilling program devised. One test hole was located on the actual plant site and later developed into a small pilot production well equipped with a deep well turbine pump. Water from this well was used for general construction requirements. Another test hole drilled near the pilot production well and adjacent to the proposed route of the well-collection system was used during the pumping test of the pilot production well to determine the degree of interference. From the data thus obtained, calculations were made to determine the coefficients of transmissibility and storage. Three additional holes

High manganese slags of low phosphorus and iron content are produced by air oxidation of high phosphorus spiegeleisen in a basic-lined converter. Control of phosphorus and iron within specification limits for ferromanganese ore feed is obtained by a unique cyclic operating procedure. Various types of slags, or synthetic manganese ore, can be made. AN affiliated paper' describes the production of high phosphorus spiegeleisen containing 14 to 23 pct Mn and up to 4 pct P in an experimental blast furnace from open-hearth slag or manganiferous iron ore. This phosphorus content is too high for use of the spiegel in normal steel-production operations. Consequently, a preferential separation must be effected whereby the manganese is concentrated in a product that is usable in industrial operations. The preferential separation methods being investigated for this phase of the work are confined to pyrometal-lurgical processes for ready incorporation into steel-plant operations. It is fortunate that manganese is more actively oxidizable than iron or phosphorus, and therein lies a preferential separation method for isolating manganese from these two elements. Silicon is more strongly oxidizable than manganese, and its oxidation precedes, or occurs simultaneously, with manganese. Therefore, manganese and silicon are separable into a high manganese oxide slag phase while the phosphorus and iron remain in the molten metallic state. Complete separation of these elements represents an ideal condition which is not generally attainable in actual operations. This pyro-metallurgical method for separating manganese from phosphorus and iron by preferential oxidation was investigated by blowing 500 lb of metal in a basic-lined vessel to obtain preliminary information on the effectiveness of the procedure. Certain conditions of attainment in the separation process are desirable in any method for removing manganese from high phosphorus spiegeleisen, such as: 1—High recovery of manganese in the oxidation product; 2—the product to be of equal or better quality than ferromanganese-grade ore—48 pct Mn minimum, less than 10 pct SiO2, and Mn-P ratio of 300:1; and 3—attainment of the enumerated objectives in a product amenable to industrial handling, such as a slag of high manganese content that will flow from the processing vessel and of sufficient fluidity for ready separation of metallic granules that may have become mixed with the manganese slag phase. Previous Work Recovery of manganese from low grade ores and industrial byproduct slags by smelting to spiegeleisen, with subsequent oxidation to synthetic ferro-manganese-feed ores, has been a subject for periodic investigation during the past four or five decades in the United States and Germany. Joseph' and associates of the Bureau of Mines North Central Experiment Station, Minneapolis, Minn., smelted manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna range, Minn., to spiegeleisen and subsequently tried air and ore oxidation procedures for concentrating the manganese into synthetic ferrograde manganese ore. Joseph's results on the operation of a side-blown basic-lined converter for air oxidation of manganese from molten spiegeleisen were so discouraging that the procedure was abandoned after 11 blowing tests. Much slag was thrown from the converter vessel; phosphorus content was four to five times the maximum allowable for ferro ore; and a manganese-iron ratio of only 2 or 3:1 was obtained in the slag instead of the required 8:1. Oxidation of manganese from spiegeleisen with about 0.5 pct P, by adding iron ore to molten spiegel in an experimental open-hearth furnace, proved moderately successful in Joseph's experiments. The main drawback to the operation was the necessity for over-oreing for effective oxidation of the manganese with consequent too high iron oxide residual in the slag. Furthermore, the phosphorus content was proportional to the iron concentration and therefore much too high, so that several hours of reduction by a carbonaceous material were required to adjust the iron and phosphorus to the desired content of high grade ferro feed. A troublesome feature of the slag product of the spiegel oxidation process was its lack of fluidity if the silica content was less than 10 pct, the concentration considered desirable for the synthetic ore. Approximately twice the desired concentration of silica was required to impart enough fluidity for transfer from the vessel by pouring. The acute shortage of manganese in Germany

Duval Corporation, the owners of the Sierrita, Esperanza, and Mineral Park copper operations in Arizona, first acquired the mineral rights to their Battle Mountain, Lander County, Nevada, property in 1962. Development of the mine commenced in mid - 1965, and the copper operation began at the end of 1968. The ore, a mixture of chalcocite and chalcopyrite, was milled and floated at a rate of 3, 175 mtpd (3,500 stpd). Because of low copper grade and price, the plant was shut down after about ten years of operation. Attention was then turned to an adjacent low-grade precious metal ore body which contained 2.74 g Au and 3.4 g Ag per mt (0.08 oz Au and 0.10 oz Ag) and minor amounts of copper. Test work revealed recovery by Carbon-In- Pulp treatment would amount to approximately 2.8 mt (90,000 oz) each of gold and silver per year. A rapid engineering and construction schedule resulted in the world's largest, as of late 1980, Carbon-In- Pulp plant being put on-stream in January 1979, with a capacity of 2.720 mtpd (3,000 stpd). Fortunately, the original crushing and grinding plant with all its infra structure was available, and the only modification needed was the addition of a gravity circuit to remove coarse free gold ahead of Carbon- In-Pulp treatment. One of the four primary 500 mm (20 in.) cyclone underflows in the primary ball mill circuit is directed to a secondary ball mill where its product is again cycloned. The cyclone underflow is screened at 3,360 microns (6 mesh) with the undersize being treated on two Pan American 1.07 m by 2. 14 m (42 in. by 84 in.) jigs. Hutch product is further concentrated on two Wilfley tables, a magnetic separator, and on a third Wilfley table where approximately 930 g (30 oz) of gold are recovered each day for amalgamation, retorting, and smelting. Returning to the grinding circuit, the final cyclone overflow is sent to the original plant tailings thickener to obtain proper pulp density for Carbon-In-Pulp treatment. Thickener underflow, at about 40% solids, is then conditioned with air and lime in a series of two 8.5 m by 9.75 m (28 ft by 32 ft) 15O cone bottom Pachucas for oxidation of pyrrhotite. The pulp is then split into two streams for cyanidation for 48 hours in two lines of eight Pachucas of the same size. Pulp is transferred from tank to tank by auxiliary air lifts. Cyanided pulp is then sent to a series of six C. I. P. mechanically agitated tanks with one hour retention in each tank. Originally these

Lead and zinc contents of elm, maple, and oak trees and of soils in which the trees grew were determined in samples from the Upper Mississippi Valley mining district, and from an area outside but contiguous to the district. The lead and zinc analyses of plant materials served to differentiate the mineralized and nonminer-alized areas. Stems contained about two times as much lead and about two to five times as much zinc as did leaves taken from the same stems. Lead and zinc analyses of all soil horizons could be used to differentiate between the two areas. Soils at most sample sites in the mineralized district seemed to be more reliable than plants for geochemical prospecting and are a more practical sampling medium. Soil samples from areas with thick loess cover, however, failed to indicate the presence of mineralized bodies whereas tree samples from the same sites contained anomalous amounts of lead and zinc. It is suggested that in areas of thick loess cover, plant samples could be used in prospecting for lead and zinc. The important part that plants play in the cycling of elements through the soil horizons is well-known. The concentration of elements in the upper soil horizons by the action of plants has been called the Goldschmidt enrichment principle.' The fact that plant species vary greatly in their ability to concentrate particular elements in their tissues is also well-known.' Agricultural literature has dealt extensively with relationships of the major nutritive elements in soils and plants3 The extent, however, to which plant actions cycle the minor nutritive and the nonmetabolic elements in the soil has not been adequately investigated. Lead is non-nutritive and toxic to plants, whereas zinc is a micronutrient in low, but toxic in high, concentrations.4 This report presents the results of a biogeochemical study concerned with the amounts of lead and zinc in some plants and soils that occurred both within and adjacent to the Upper Mississippi Valley lead-zinc district. Field work for this study was done in the summers of 1961 and 1962. SAMPLE TARGETS AND CHEMICAL ANALYSES Geologic and physiographic descriptions of' the district have been made by Heyl 5 and several other authors in a series of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports and quadrangle maps.6-I Sedimentary rocks, mostly dolomite, limestone, shale, and sandstone, of Cambrian, Ordovician, and Silurian age predominate in the area. Mineral deposits are of the vein and cavity-fill type; the principal ore minerals are galena and sphalerite. Vegetation of the area was characterized by Curtis1 6 as southern hardwood forest interspersed with patches of oak savanna and prairie. Plant genera typical of the eastern United States Temperate Zone, including ash, cherry, dogwood, elm, hackberry, hickory, maple, oak, and other woody and herbaceous genera, are present. The natural vegetation has been greatly modified by agricultural, logging, and mining operations. The species of the original flora are present, but not in their former relative abundance. Soils of this district belong, for the most part, to the Brunizem and Gray-Brown Podzolic great soil groups. The Brunizems are the soils developed under prairie vegetation.'' The Gray-Brown Podzolics are the soils developed under deciduous forests,18 They are derived from both bedrock and from loess parent materials, and

G. Edmunds—Solid solubility is considered to be of either the interstitial or the substitutional type. Is it possible, in a binary alloy as the simplest case, that some of the solute atoms are present in the normal lattice sites (substitutionally or filling lattice vacancies) while simultaneously others are in interstitial positionss One might even ask whether a distribution of the two types may be the normal situation. H. M. Meyer—Metastable states of interstitial atoms occupying vacant lattice sites possibly occur as well as of substitutional atoms squeezed in between regular matrix positions. However (as we know since Hume-Rothery), the solute atoms choose between the two kinds of solutions; consequently, every solute will be unequivocally either substitutional or interstitial in the equilibrium state of the solid solution. M. Balicki—In view of the fact that the authors apparently correlate the analysis of the alloys at the ingot stage with the properties exhibited at the testing stage, I would like to ask whether this is a fully justifiable procedure. In other words, how good are their determinations of solute concentration for correlating them with the mechanical properties. The answer to this question may explain some of the divergencies. Assuming good enough homogenization of the samples and exact determination of mechanical properties the position of the plotted experimental points will depend solely upon the accuracy of composition determination. If this is not accurate, say due to loss or pickup of elements during processing from the ingot to the testing stage, or due to a systematic error in the method employed for obtaining solute concentration data, the points will deviate from their true position and may align themselves along a different curve than the one expected. H. V. Kinsey—We have been studying the creep-rupture properties of titanium-base alloys at 1000°F. In the course of this work, anomalies in behavior of the alloys that would suggest that the material under test was becoming stronger as the test progressed have been observed. If this was so, the most likely explanation that we could think of was that the test bars were absorbing oxygen and nitrogen from the air during the test and were thereby becoming strengthened. In an attempt to determine the strengthening effect of absorbed oxygen and nitrogen the following experiment was conducted. A length of cold-rolled titanium was supplied by the E. I. du Pont Co. Two test bars, having a 1/4 in. diam gauge length, were prepared from this material. One bar was tested in the as-received condition. The second bar was heated in air at 1550°F for 100 hr and subsequently air cooled prior to testing. A testing temperature of 1000°F was employed. The results of these tests are tabulated in table 11. In the author's opinion, is it reasonable to assume that the bar that was exposed to air at 1550°F for 100 hr was stronger because it absorbed oxygen and nitrogen from the air during this heat treatment? W. L. Finlay (authors' reply)—Direct experimental evidence for or against Mr. Edmunds' interesting suggestion will probably never be available. It seems possible, however, that mixed interstitial-substitutional solid solution might well occur with interstitial elements. A study has been made of the microstructure and mechanical properties of splat-cooled aluminum-base gold alloys with gold concentration from 0.25 to 5.0 wt pct. These alloys have been quenched from the liquid state by a torsion-catapult technique, which has made it possible to pepare specimens suitable for mechanical property measwements. From the electron micrographs it has been shown that the solid solubility of gold in aluminum can be extended to 2.5 wt pct (0.35 at. pct) by splat-cooling, while the maximum equilibrium solubility is known to be less than 0.3 wt pct (0.04 at. pct). The very fine grain size (several tenths of a micron), the extended solid solubility, and the fine dispersion of a second phase (AuAl2) contribute concurrently to a substantial strengthening effect. In Al-5 wt pct Au splat-cooled specimens of less than 50 thickness, the yield strength is 17 kg per sq mm or 6 times as large as the strength of bulk specimens. For the Al-1.0 to 2.5 wt pct Au solid solution obtained by splat-cooling, the yield strength reaches 7.5 kg per sq mm after an aging treatment (for 10 hr at 200°C), while it is 3.7 kg per sq mm for the corresponding bulk specimens. A great deal of research has been done in recent years on the structure and the properties of metals and alloys rapidly quenched from the liquid state.' The term "splat-cool" has been used with the meaning of a rapid quenching from the liquid state., The splat-cooling techniques have produced large numbers of new structures, which are expressed in terms of metastable phases,3 concentrated solid solutions,4 amorphous phases,5'6 new phases,7 and so forth. Nearly all previous studies have concentrated on the physical properties; i.e., crystallography, structure, electrical resistivity, magnetism, and so forth, of the splat-cooled metals and alloys. The mechanical strength of splat-cooled metals and alloys has hardly been investigated except for some recent work by MOSS' on A1-V alloys. The principle common to all experimental techniques developed to obtain very rapid quenching rates is based on the heat transfer by conduction. Liquid must be in good thermal contact with a substrate of high heat conductivity. Both of the published devices known as the "gun" and the "piston and anvil" techniques suffer from certain shortcomings. For example, the specimen obtained by the gun technique is very small and flaky, and hence inadequate for mechanical properties measurements. On the other hand if the material is forced to yield a continuous speci- men by the piston and anvil technique, it is probable that some plastic deformation occurs during the quench. A novel method for rapid quenching of a liquid metal or alloy, the "torsion-catapult", has been devised by Roberge and Herman9 at the University of Pennsylvania. In the apparatus the melt is thrown out of a curved furnace by a catapult and impinges on a copper substrate. The apparatus has the advantage of producing a continuous foil which is relatively large in size and of a quality suitable for the measurements of mechanical properties. The quenching rate is estimated to be of the order of l05 to l06 ºC per sec, (comparable to rates achieved by the piston and anvil technique). In selecting an alloy to be studied we were made aware of the fact that gold was believed to be "insoluble" in in and consequently age hardening in the A1-Au system appeared to be interesting. Quite recently Heirnendahl13-15 revealed that the solid solubility, as determined by transmission electron microscopy, was 0.3 wt pct Au at 640°C and 0.25 wt pct Au at 600°C, decreasing with decreasing temperature. In an A1-0.2 pct Au alloy after quenching from a solution treating temperature of 600°C the yield stress was 2 kg per sq mm, and it increased up to 6 kg per sq mm after aging for 1 to 10 hr at 200°C. The precipitation occurred in the form of platelike particles mainly on (100) matrix planes. The intermediate phase n', the equilibrium phase n (AuAl2), and lattice relationships between both precipitates and the matrix were also investigated by electron microscopy. Exploration of Lake Superior iron ores is done principally by drilling. The soft iron ores are churn drilled and the harder ores are diamond drilled. The churn drill used is the Mesabi type and its operation should be described as "water jetting." The drill rods are washed down by the combination action of the water jetting from the bit at the lower end of the rods and the churning motion given the line of rods. The water, which is forced down through the rods, comes up between the wash rods and the casing, bringing the choppings to the surface. It is caught in three or more barrels, each of which has a stoppered hole 8-10 in. from the bottom. These barrels are successively filled, allowed to settle, and drained to the hole, until the desired depth is drilled. The sediment from each barrel is transferred to a settling tub in which it is allowed to settle; the water is then drawn off and the wet sample is collected and dried. The number of barrels used depends on the character of the ore. For example, when drilling sandy ores, all the wash water is caught and settled for the proper length of time without refilling any of the barrels. Thus, the sediment held below the stoppered hole in any one barrel is not disturbed. The casing is kept as near the bottom of the hole as practicable to prevent the caving of the hole from jeopardizing the sample. While the casing is being driven down and the hole is being washed clean after casing, the return water is not run into the sample barrels. In exploratory work in the harder formations, where the diamond drill is used, the sample comprises both core and cuttings. The care given in handling and preserving the core depends on the importance that may be attached to certain characteristic strata in different formations. The ferrous and ferric oxide concentrations of slags, expressed as j = Fe+++/(Fe+++ + Fe++), have been established through gas-slag equilibrium at 1550°C in a range of oxygen pressure of 10-I to 10-9 equilibriumatm. The value of j is increased by basic additions (BaO, CaO, MgO, MnO) and decreased by acidic oxides (SiO2 and TiO2). Oxygen pressure is shown graphically as a function of composition for slags which are analogous to those at the slag-gas interface of the open hearth furnace. THE progress which has been made in recent years in understanding the chemistry of metallurgical slags has been based largely on studies of slag-metal and slag-gas equilibria. There is a considerable body of knowledge which is applicable to reactions occurring at the slag-metal interface in open hearth steelmaking. There is little information concerning reactions of the slag with the furnace atmosphere and hence little basis for an understanding of the transfer of oxygen, sulphur, or hydrogen between gas and slag. The oxygen pressure of the open hearth atmosphere is normally of the order of 10-1 to 10-3 atm which differs by several orders of magnitude from that of about 10" atm at the slag-metal interface. The chemical properties of the slag, for example, the ratio of ferric to ferrous iron and the ability of the slag to hold sulphur in solution, are greatly affected by changes in oxygen pressure. This investigation was undertaken to enlarge our knowledge of the effect of oxygen Pressure on steel-making slags. Using air or controlled mixtures of CO a CO2 a range of oxygen Pressures from 10.' to 10.' was covered. Review of the Literature There are only a few references in the literature which pertain directly to this investigation. The most important is that of Darken and Gurry1,2 on the system iron-oxygen. This work included the determination of the phase diagram of the system and also a study of the field of homogeneous melts and their oxygen pressures. Their apparatus and procedure were very similar to that used in this study. Iron oxide was melted in a platinum crucible under an atmosphere of CO2:CO, CO2:H2, H2O, CO2, air or O2 depending upon the partial pressure of oxygen desired. After equilibrium was reached, the sample was quenched and analyzed for ferrous and ferric oxide. By appropriate calculations these authors were able to determine the oxygen and iron activities in the various slags, heats of formation of the oxides of iron, and heats of solution of iron and oxygen in the liquid slags. In a subsequent paper' the same authors made a less thorough investigation of the effects of additions of lime and manganese oxide on the composition of iron oxide melts. Only a few experiments were made and those in a narrower range of temperature and oxygen pressure. Darken' has investigated the fusion temperature of iron oxide in contact with silica under various atmospheres. He found that the temperature changes from 1120° to 1447°C as the gas composition changes from CO2/CO equal to 20.8 to pure oxygen. A comprehensive paper by White" predates the work of Darken and Gurry. The decomposition of ferric oxide into oxygen and lower oxides of iron was studied from 1000° to 1650°C and under oxygen pressures from 2 to 76 cm of mercury. The effect of

The prevention of quartz flotation by chelation of activating ions with the tetrasodium salt of EDTA in oleic acid flotation was investigated using a small vacuum flotation cell. It was found that flotation of quartz could be entirely suppressed in the presence of activating ions during complete flotation of hematite. It was further shown that the concentration of activating ions liberated from Wisconsin Gogebic taconite is sufficient to float quartz in an oleic acid system. Large tonnages of low grade siliceous iron ores occur on the iron ranges of the Lake Superior district. Although the lower grade nonmagnetic types are currently not of economic importance, they constitute a large future potential source of iron and steel, and hence have been the subject for extensive research on their beneficiation. TACONITES Of particular interest to the Dept. of Minerals and Metals Engineering at the University of Wisconsin have been the low grade nonmagnetic taconites of the Wisconsin Gogebic Range. These occur as five members of the iron formation and have been described in detail elsewhere.' Essentially they consist of an intimate mixture of hematite, goethite and quartz, with minor amounts of siderite, magnetite, iron containing silicates, and manganese minerals. A typical mean analysis based on the Bureau of Mines analyses' is: SiO2-52.50%, Fe2O3-43.40%, (Fe-30.38%), A12O3-1.15%, P2O5-0.07%, Mn2O3-0.29%, CaO-0.07%, (S-0.03%), Loss on ignition-2.00%. The quartz in these ores is of a microcrystalline variety,2 and so intimately associated with the iron oxide minerals that extremely fine grinding, in the order of minus 325 mesh, is required for liberation. During grinding and subsequent flotation, the concentration of quartz activating ions in the pulp becomes sufficiently high to activate quartz which floats along with the iron minerals in the presence of oleic acid. cook3 and co-workers concluded that oxidized iron ores released appreciable quantities of quartz-activating ions in water pulps. This is shown to be true in the present investigation. As a matter of fact, application of this phenomenon, as well as the intentional addition of activating calcium ions, is made use of in the an ionic flotation of silica from the iron oxide minerals.4,5 In view of the above, it becomes almost impossible to effect a sharp separation of quartz in the oleic acid flotation of the iron oxide minerals from these taconites, even with satisfactory liberation. This fact led to the current investigation to find a means of linking the activating ions with a chelating agent. The aim was to establish basic data for the quartz-water-oleic acid system which might not only be applicable to iron ores, but also to the flotation of other siliceous ores as well. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Vacuum Flotation Cell: The vacuum flotation used in this investigation is similar to that used by previous investigators.6,7,8 The cell consisted of a 100 ml graduated cylinder with the lip removed. Vacuum from a water aspirator was applied to the cell through a trap; suitable tubing, and a rubber stopper inserted in the top of the cell. Constant absolute pressure was maintained by means of a manometer connected to the trap with a tee. Flotation: The required amount of activating ion solution was pipetted into a beaker. This was then diluted to 99.0 ml with water having a pH below that desired for the test, or so adjusted with HC1. After addition of 1.0 ml of oleic acid solution (2.0 mg oleic acid per ml), the pH was readjusted to the desired value with NaOH, and the entire solution transferred to the cell containing 1.5 gm of quartz. After vigorously agitating the cell and its contents for 2 min, the vacuum was applied to the cell and the estimated degree of flotation observed for a 3-min period. Activating ions studied included Ca++, Mg++, Al+++, and Fe+ + + added as chloride solutions. In addition,

Analytical expressions derived previously are used to describe quantitatively effects on macrosegregation of some solidification and mold design variables. Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy is used as example. It is shown that abrupt changes in heat transfer rate result in solute-rich or solute-poor "bands". Severe solute-rich bands accowzpany "reheating" that can result, for example, from abrupt formation of an air gap at a mold-metal interface. With planar isotherms, solute-poor regions also result from reduction in cross section through which fluid flow to feed shrinkage takes place. It is suggested that the negative "cone" of segregation often found at the base of large ingots results from this reduction in cross section for feeding. Consideration is given to the positive and negative segregation to be expected in laboratory ingots in association with changes in ingot cross section. Under-riser positive segregation is considered and it is concluded this segregation results when vertical temperature gradient is low in the region of the riser; the segregation is accentuated by the temperature gradient reversal which can occur in inadequately insulated risers ("'hot tops"). Finally it is shown for Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy that the assumption of constant k and p in analytic solutions gives calculated results close to those obtained for the case of ziariable k and 0. A basic "local solute redistribution equation" was derived earlier' for calculation of macrosegregation resulting from flow of solute-rich liquid to feed solidification shrinkage, thermal contraction, and/or other contractions occurring during solidification. This expression relates fraction liquid, g~, to liquid composition, CL, at a given position x, y, z, in a solidifying Eq. [I] is for the general case of three-dimensional heat and fluid flow assuming constant solid (but not necessarily liquid) density during solidification, negligible net solute change from diffusion, and no pore formation. In this paper we first demonstrate application of this equation for calculation of macrosegregation in several examples involving one-dimensional heat and fluid flow. Specifically considered are examples in which segregation results from sudden changes in heat flow conditions. Next, Eq. [I] is used to describe segregation in examples where isotherms remain planar but where fluid flow is no longer one-dimensional. Application of this expression illustrates the type of segregation to be expected in unidirectionally solidified ingots of gradually or abruptly varying cross section. For segregation calculations, A1-4.5 pct Cu alloy is employed with constant k and p Vz = 0.172, 4 = 0.055), eutectic composition (CE = 33 pct Cu). In all examples, fraction eutectic is neglected in velocity calculations; this was previously shown to introduce little error.' A linear distribution of fraction liquid in the liquid-solid zone is assumed. In a concluding section it is shown that the assumption employed of constant k and /3 gives results close to those obtained when the actual (variable) values of k and 0 are employed.

PULVERIZED coal was first used for firing cement kilns about 45 years ago, with such success that it has continued in general use. Based on cost, pulverized coal is usually the most economical fuel. In some localities natural gas or oil is cheaper, but 85.5 per cent of all cement kilns at present are fired with pulverized coal. The pulverized-coal flame is well suited to kiln conditions. Its soft, luminous nature gives it a high radiating property and the length of the flame can be readily varied to suit conditions in a kiln of any length. Ash and slag cause most of the difficulties incident to the burning of coal. In a cement kiln, however, the ash, being similar in composition to the raw mix and being deposited uniformly in the mix and clinker, occasions no difficulty as long as it remains constant in quality and quantity. Until 6 years ago almost all cement kilns using pulverized coal employed the bin system. The coal was dried and pulverized in a separate plant and delivered into a bin at the kiln. Thus the bin system requires driers, storage-type pulverizers, conveying systems, individual kiln bins, pulverized-coal feeders and primary air fans. The direct-fired system requires only a pulverizer and a blower. Fig. I shows typical plants. The first installations of direct-fired pulverizers were of the impact type but fineness of pulverization was both inadequate and variable. About 1927 a few direct-fired installations employing tube-type pulverizers were made, which were much more satisfactory. As more efficient pulverizers were developed from 1934 on, equipment for direct firing was installed at a large number of plants, until now 196 of about 900 kilns in use in the United States are direct-fired. Most of these replaced antiquated bin systems. PROCESS OF BURNING CEMENT CLINKERS The process of burning cement clinkers is fundamentally one of heat transfer. In boilers and other heat-exchange apparatus the area of the surface receiving heat from the gases is the best unit for comparing output. This seems to be equally true for kilns. The inside kiln surface is the heat-receiving surface and its area is used as the unit of kiln size in the following comparisons. Heat input is based on British thermal units in the fuel. E. G. Bailey,1 in his work on boiler-furnace heat absorption, has used the unit "B.t.u. available." This is the practical calorific power of the fuel, plus the heat in the air used for combustion. In other words, it is the heat available for useful work in the furnace or kiln. The unit of kiln output is barrels per hour. The composition of the raw mix, the percentage of water in the slurry of wet plants and hardness of burning all affect the output. These conditions, however, are hard to evaluate and probably have less effect on the output than irregularities of raw feed and clinker discharge and inexpert control of combustion. WET VS. The art of drilling tunnels is still in its infancy, although it is 70 years since the first tunnel driver was put into operation. (It was used to drive 6000 ft of tunnel under the English Channel.) But during the next 60 years neither government agencies nor private enterprise could find much of a future in tunnel drivers. It was difficult to justify the heavy investments, labor was opposed to the machines, and there had been some spectacular failures. In the last ten years, however, there have been changes. Tunnel drivers are being tried with increasing frequency-in spite of the fact that a large number of them have had to be abandoned on site.

Tan record of the largest magnesium plant in the country utilizing sea water as a primary raw material stands as another victory in the struggle for large-scale production of pure chemical elements from the oceans. Bromine was the first element to be economically and commercially recovered when, in 1933, a six million pound per year unit was built on the Atlantic Coast near Wilmington, North Carolina, by the Ethyl-Dow Chemical Co.1 The bromine was reacted with ethylene to produce ethylene dibromide, a necessary associate of tetraethyl lead in ethyl antiknock fluid. Within eight years that plant was doubled and redoubled, and another large unit was put into operation at Freeport, Texas, taking bromine from the Gulf of Mexico. In 1940, in fortunate anticipation of the impending demand for magnesium and the limitations of the production from natural brines, the Dow Chemical Co. turned again to the sea, and designed and erected a plant at Freeport to produce 18,000,000 lb. of magnesium per year from sea water.2 In March 1941, two months after the new plant had been put into successful operation, construction of an 18,000,000-lb. Government-financed addition was started. Late in 1941, as a part of the $400,000,000 defense program intended to produce 600,000,000 t0 700,000,000 lb. of magnesium per year, Dow was asked to build and operate for the Government a 72,000000-lb. plant near its original plant at Freeport. Within a few days after the Japanese made their attack at Pearl Harbor, preparation of a site was started at Velasco, Texas, for the construction of the Texas plant of the Dow Magnesium Corporation-the largest known magnesium plant utilizing sea water as its raw material. Less than six months after the first piling was driven, urgently needed magnesium was in steady production. Five months later, the plant had exceeded its rated capacity. It remained above rated production until the general magnesium curtailment was applied to Government-owned plants in September 1944. Credit for the construction and operation record of the Dow magnesium plant must be divided among the efforts of a very determined group of men, an extremely favorable location, and a simple process. It is with the two latter aspects of the plant that this article will deal. The site for the new enterprise was chosen near Velasco, Texas, on property bordering the Brazos River at a point approximately 6 miles inland from the original magnesium plant and y miles inland from the Freeport Harbor on the Gulf of Mexico. This location was far enough away from the operating units to reduce both interference from construction and the vulnerability of closely bunched manufacturing operations to the then feared air attack. Yet the distance inland was not too great for the economical construction of a barge canal from the harbor to serve both the transportation of raw

METALLURGISTS - or at least metals - have been of central importance in most of the inventions that have shaped the course of man's history. From the first Bronze Age tools to the iron armor of the Roman soldier, the cannon, cast type for printing, the steam engine, the electric motor and modern electronic devices, technological progress has revolved around some particular property or comb nation of properties selected from the metallurgist's repertory. The recent utilization of the energy of the atomic nucleus (currently for military purposes alone but with great constructive implications for the future) is no exception to this, although the use of uranium and plutonium in metallic form is of secondary importance, since the significant properties are those of the nucleus and not of the electrons responsible for metallic behavior. THE METALLURGIST AND ATOMIC ENERGY The metallurgist has a role of central importance to play in the future development of atomic energy. Not only must he make and shape the fissionable materials themselves, but he must also develop auxiliary materials to withstand the extreme conditions imposed on nuclear reactor components by the high heat-transfer rates needed for efficient utilization of the fuel and by the perplexing but interesting effects of radiation on the structure and properties of materials. It is doubtful if there is currently any other field potentially more rewarding to a young metallurgist. Quite apart from the all important but relatively short-range considerations of national security is the vision of the effect on civiliza-

EARLY in 1946 the Shen-Penn Production Co., a subsidiary of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Co., was organized to operate the Shenandoah Stripping, one of the largest open-pit anthracite mines in the world. This mine is located in the Western Middle Field near Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, Pa., and involves the removal of approximately 60,400,000 cu yd of overburden to permit the recovery of 9,200,000 gross tons of rough cleaned coal from an area 8000 ft long and 2700 ft wide, with a maximum depth of 400 ft. Operations began in August 1946, and within the next few years 31,811,000 cu yd of overburden and 2,994,000 gross tons of rough cleaned coal had been removed. During the early days of open-pit mining operations, steam was the primary motive power. However, as the size of the equipment increased, so did the problems of fuel, water, labor, and maintenance. Because of its efficiency and convenience, electric power rapidly replaced steam. Later the modern diesel engine was developed, and today practically all stripping equipment is either electric, diesel-electric, or diesel-powered. In locations where electric power is not readily available or where operations are scattered over a large area, diesel power is favored. At Shenandoah operations are highly concentrated in a relatively small area, and this fact, coupled with the availability of ample electric energy, indicated the selection of electric-powered equipment. Since this was a new company, it was necessary to purchase every item, from the smallest tools to stripping shovels. Although the organization period was hampered by the postwar scarcity of materials, an excellent opportunity was afforded to set up a thoroughly modern plant. This paper will describe the power facilities, with particular emphasis on the more unusual features. The substation is a major item in a power distribution system, and a simple arrangement utilizing high quality equipment is an excellent investment. With this in mind, a 3000-kva unit type substation was selected and installed. This unit is made up of three sections, which are assembled simply by bolting together the various sections and connecting the power leads, see Fig. 1. The transformer proper, rated at 3000 kva, is oil-filled and nitrogen-sealed, having a 66,000-v Delta primary and 4160-v Wye secondary with a grounded neutral and 46-ohm ground resistor. The function of this resistor will be described later. Electrical energy is purchased from a public utility and is delivered to the main substation at 66,000 v over one or the other of two incoming lines. These lines terminate on a high voltage switching section on which high voltage fuses and Thyrite lightning arresters are installed. The outgoing feeder switching unit is made up of the following: 1-An auxiliary compartment consisting of potential and current transformers with necessary terminal blocks for connecting to power company metering equipment. 2-Another auxiliary compartment containing a control transformer, battery, and battery charger for the furnishing of power for tripping and reclosing of power circuit breakers. The assemblies in these auxiliary compartments are mounted on carriages that can be rolled in and out with ease. Potential transformers are readily accessible for inspection and fuse replacement. When withdrawn from the operating position they are completely de-energized and grounded. 3-Two feeder breaker compartments, each with a 1200-amp, 5000-v, solenoid-operated magneblast air circuit breaker, voltmeter, ammeter, overcurrent relays, and a ground relay. These power circuit breakers can be quickly and safely withdrawn or repaired. A built-in isolating mechanism is used for lowering the breaker to a transfer truck for repair or inspection or as a means of disconnecting the breaker from the source of power as an added precaution when working on power lines. THE AUTHOR hopes that this paper will meet with criticism and debate by fellow members of the Institute rather than with that attitude of passiv-ity and indifference which one is inclined to adopt when considering a field completely foreign to one's own experi-ence. After several years of study of voluminous literature, maps, and statistics, and many personal journeys and field inspections of various parts of Siberia, the conclusion is reached .that the area adjacent to the Stanovoi, Zhugd-Zhur, and Yablonoi ranges as below defined is that which .is most accessible to the western world and will soonest give results from exploration. HISTORY The first incursion of the Russians into Siberia east of the Yenesei River appears to have been in 1632 when the fort of Yakutsk was founded on the middle Lena. The early expeditions were in quest of furs. As the Siberians say, "the sable beckoned" and the post of Anadyr was founded in 1639, two thousand miles further northeast. Thus nineteen years after the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, the Russians had established a trading post within 700 miles of what is now the town of Nome, Alaska. Parties of Cossaks penetrated to the shores of the Okotsk1 Sea early in the seventeenth century, but it was not until 1688 that the town of Okotsk was founded. In 1712 a grand project was elaborated at St. Petersburg for building a port at Okotsk, but it came to nothing. Vitus Bering, the Alaska explorer, built ships at Okotsk, and made this his point of depar-ture. It is stated that the iron work used in these ships was brought overland partly from Yakutsk, and partly even from St. Petersburg, 5500 miles away. Accord-ing to report a copper deposit was worked on the river Urak, not far from the coast, and copper was smelted for sheathing the bottoms. Grassgrown mounds con-taining slag and shots of copper were inspected by the writer last summer, at the site of the ancient shipyard.
