Most grouting has been done to stop water flaw in mines and for stabilizing foundations of various man-made structures, a survey of the U.S. literature reveals. Apparently Sun Manuel is one of the first mines in this country to use grout extensively underground for strengthening and stabilizing ground in drifts, shafts, and stations. A comparison with other procedures as well as details of the Sun Manuel program are covered. The employment of pressure grouting as a ground stabilizer at the San Manuel Copper Corp. mine reduces delays in both development and production, lowers costs, and makes possible safer working conditions. It specifically reduces delays in haulage operations and permits the maintenance of normal ventilation. In development work this grouting allows faster excavation by cementing together highly fractured or broken ground that otherwise would require extensive cribbing or spiling. In drift repair, it consolidates the loose or fractured rock over the timber or steel drift supports, thus decreasing the frequency of repair, lessening the hazards from falling rock, and curtailing delays due to blockage of drifts by muckpiles and repair operations. Pressure grouting is the process of pumping an accurately controlled mixture of cement and water into loose, fractured, or porous rock. The ratio of water to cement varies according to the nature of the rock encountered, from the thinnest mixture of 30 gal of water per sack of cement, used to fill very fine fissures, to very thick grout of 5 gal of water per sack of cement, used to fill large fissures or extensive areas of loose, broken rock. The pumping pressures at San Manuel vary from about 100 to 1000 psi, depending upon the compactness of the rock, while at other mines the pressures sometimes go as high as 5000 psi. In order to grout an area in which ground water is encountered, the pumping pressure of the grout must be increased by an amount equal to the pressure of the ground water. GROUTING IN DEVELOPMENT WORK The areas under development at San Manuel include many sections of loose, highly fractured rock. Prior to the advent of the grouting program, drifts, shafts, and stations in these areas could not be excavated without utilizing extensive support such as cribbing, spiling, and breast boarding. This slowed down the development work and increased the costs considerably over that required for excavating in more competent ground. Now, when a particularly bad area is contacted, the mining is temporarily stopped while the bad portion of drift or shaft is grouted. After the grouting is completed, the excavating is resumed with an approximate decrease of 50 pct in lost time and costs. Grouting in Drifts and Turnouts: The grouting procedures and patterns used in drifts and turnouts are very similar. The standard procedure for grouting such a turnout is shown in Fig. 1. After the ground is supported as well as possible with cribbing or lagging, the gaps between the back lagging and side lagging are plugged with empty cement sacks or additional timber, if necessary. The ground surrounding the proposed turnout is then grouted in two stages. In the first stage, the broken and caved rock is drilled and grouted to a depth of 5 to 10 ft, depending on the depth of the broken rock. This stage forms a grouted seal that allows higher pressures to be used at depths beyond 10 ft without developing excessive leaks at the face. After a grout hole is drilled, a 10-ft long pipe is wedged tightly into it with empty cement sacks. Grout is then pumped into the hole until the pressure reaches 200 to 300 psi, and the pipe is subsequently removed if it hasn't become cemented in. No more than one hole at a time is drilled and grouted because the grout has a tendency to go from one hole into another, plugging up the latter. Five or six holes are usually adequate for the first 10 ft of grouting. Experience has shown bentonite to be a useful admixture to the grout, particularly when it is indicated that the grout is being lost into large fissures or voids. Bentonite increases the plasticity of the grout enabling it to remain in place more easily until it has begun to set. Nowhere can there be found a more misleading statement than the old one that "Iron can be manufactured cheaper in the South." During the past decade ironmakers and users of iron have heard varied and sundry stories of the wonderful resources of the Birmingham district, including abundant ore and coal fields, cheap labor, a wonderful climate and similar industrial Utopian statements. Birmingham represents the major portion of the iron business in the South, and as Birmingham fares so goes the iron business of the South. The intent of this paper is to shed some light on the actual conditions surrounding ironmaking in the South, especially in the Birmingham, or North Alabama, district. By a presentation of facts it is desired to point out that the "cheap iron" of the industrial South is a thing of the past, primarily because of increased labor cost and because labor is radically different in performance to what it was years ago. Also, because most of the raw materials needed in ironmaking that would be classed better than inferior are gone. Important Factors The several important factors that have been responsible for this change are : 1. Shrinkage of the iron business in the South. 2. Increased labor cost. 3. The development of the South, with an industrial trend, without a substantial increase of its own iron-consuming market. 4. Increased freight rates, which has narrowed the market that might be reached from this district. 5. Depletion of the better grades of raw materials, both ore and coal. As is well known, many questions affecting the properties and uses of a metal cannot be answered without careful consideration of the state of purity realized in the various operations of preparation, refining, or special treatment that have brought the product to its final state. The occurrence of an impurity in minute quantity offers no guarantee that its effect will be inconsiderable because dissolved substances often modify the properties of a metal quite out of proportion to their concentration. In such cases the determination of solid solubility must be accepted as a problem of considerable difficulty, requiring the use of especially purified materials and methods not ordinarily used in the metallurgical laboratory. This aspect of the equilibrium between metals and their oxides is especially important and a search for fundamental data reveals little except conflicting opinion even concerning the systems of common occurrence and interest. Rhines and Mathewson1 in 1934 studied the solubility of oxygen in solid copper by annealing to equilibrium in air and gave reasons for the failure of other methods, notably the ordinary procedure of heat-treatment followed by microscopic examination, to yield reliable results. In this paper, a similar study has been made of the solubility of oxygen in cobalt. The simple theory of this method is outlined below.

An investigation of equivalent pore entry radii in typical samples of petroleum reservoir rock and the pore volume associated with each value of pore entry radius has been made. Theoretical discussions together with experimental procedures for obtaining pore entry radii and the distribution of pore volume with pore entry radii are presented. Experimental results on a number of core samples, along with typical distribution curves, are shown. Data on the per cent of the pore volume filled by mercury at a pressure of 1500 psi are included. The results of re-runs of samples, made possible by regenerative apparatus, show the repeatability of the data and indicate the amount of physical change in the samples by mercury penetration. Theoretical equations for calculating permeability from pore size distribution data were derived and the results of such calculations are compared with measured gas permeability data. The effect of the shape, surface area, and weight of the sample on the pore size distribution of reservoir rocks was investigated experimentally. Mercury capillary pressure curves are compared with those obtained by the porous diaphragm method using pas to displace water. Standard core analysis techniques, in general, lead to quantities which are statistical averages of the varying properties of the samples under examination. Although such statistical information has real value in predicting the gross performance of porous bodies. it fails to provide fundamental information concerning the properties of the porous medium itself or any processes which may be occurring in it. For example, a gas permeability measurement on a core sample is an indirect way of determining an average pore radius for that particular sample. Since there are many combinations of pore radii that will give the same radius. and, hence, the same permeability, no information is obtained on the pore size distribution. Furthermore, similar values in permeability do not imply similarity in other properties of a porous medium. For instance, it is possible to have two core samples with identical permeability which would have different residual oil contents at the end of an air-oil drive, or even different amounts of interstitial water. It has been recognized for some time by the petroleum industry that a determination of pore size distribution for porous reservoir rocks offered promise of increased understanding of fundamental flow processes in the porous matrix. and therefore of petroleum res- ervoir performance in general. There have recently been published several methods for determination of pore size distribution in porous materials. A report is given here of the modifications in equipment and technique required to adapt one of these methods to measurements on petroleum reservoir core samples. Although only a few correlations or applications of the method are available for presentation at this time, the technique is brought to the attention of the industry so that the opinions and experience of others with this or similar techniques may be exchanged. It seems possible that the method will have wide application in the future. METHOD There are three general methods which may be employed to measure the pore size distribution in naturally occurring rock formations. One method1 is based on experimentally determined adsorption isotherms for calculating the surface area of the porous medium. Knowing the surface area and the pore volume, a rough estimate of the pore radius can be made. Since this method depends on the thickness and uniformity of the adsorbed layer, the validity of the results would be highly questionable. THE meaning of temperature control can be extended to cover not only the control of temperatures' but also the control of processes through a knowledge of the temperatures involved. In this sense it has a very wide interest. A list of the industries in which temperature control is used in one way or another would cover nearly the entire industrial field. This discussion will be confined to the field of high temperatures. In practically all industries involving operations at high temperatures, pyrometers are used or men are paid for their ability either to estimate temperatures or gage an operation by some physical or chemical change or condition dependent on temperatures. As progress is made in the development of instruments and of methods for measuring temperature, some of these highly skilled artisans are learning the use of a new tool. Many processes have been, in recent years, improved by means of exact measurement thus substituted for estimation, but in a great many industries the pyrometer has had practically no opportunity to demonstrate its usefulness. The perfecting of instruments must be accompanied with a dissemination of the knowledge that new instruments are available and can be economically used. The demand at present, however, is ahead of the supply, and many industries are handicapped by the want of pyrometers. One of the highest paid skilled tradesmen of the present time is the man in the steel rolling mill who knows when proper working temperatures are attained. The metallurgist in his development of steels is continually demanding closer adherence to given temperature ranges in the processes, and the pyrometer is rapidly becoming indispensable. Properties of the finished products are being correlated with working temperatures and so closely that in some cases even the pyrometer is taxed to give the required accuracy. The greatest progress has been made in those industries in which the lower temperatures are used, particularly below 500° C. In this lower range automatic control has been highly developed.

A mathematical tnodel of forward combustion in an oil reservoir is treated in this paper. The model describes a radial system having a vertical section of essentially infinite thickness, all of which is permeable to gas flow. Combustion, however, is presumed initiated over a limited thickness of the total vertical section. In the interval supporting cotnbustion, the mechanisms of radial conduction, convection and heat generation are taken into account. Above and below the burning interval, heat transport in the radial direction is by cottduction and convection. Vertical heat losses from the ignited interval are accounted for by conduction alone. A general solution is presented for the temperature distribution caused by radial movement of the combustion front. The results show that no feedback of heat occurs into the ignited interval when convection and conduction are acting in the bounding media. Peak temperatures are also 5 to 10 per cent higher than in the case where heat transport in the bounding media is by conduction alone. We arbitrarily define vertical coverage to be that fraction of the total ignited interval which is at 600F above atnbient, or greater, at any given time. The radial distance at which the vertical coverage becomes zero is the propagation range of the combustion front. It was found that an increase in vertical coverage results when the oxygen concentration, fuel concentration or gas-injection rate is increased. Moreover, the combustion front can be propagated 10 to 15 per cent further than in the case where only conduction is acting above and below the ignited interval. INTRODUCTION In the theoretical treatment of forward combustion in a radial system, one of the problems encountered is the determination of the transient temperature distributions caused by an expanding cylindrical heat source. Bailey and Larkin' and Ramey' simultaneously presented analytical solutions to the problem assuming heat transport by conduction alone. In a subsequent publication, Bailey and Larkin3 included the effects of both conduction and convection while treating linear and radial models. In this latter work, however, vertical heat losses were largely neglected. Selig and Couch' dealt with a radial model in which both conduction and convection were acting. Only a limiting case involving vertical heat losses was considered, however. Namely, temperatures on the boundary of the bed of interest were set equal to zero. Solutions thus obtained were representative of a system having a maximum vertical heat flux. Chu5 recently treated a more general case in which a permeable bed was considered bounded by impermeable media. Conduction and convection took place within the bed, and only conduction outside of the bed. The effects of vertical heat losses were included in his study. Solutions were obtained by numerical techniques. This paper is an extension of the theoretical work of other authors pertaining to forward combustion in a radial system. In particular, a mathematical model of the process is treated in which heat generation occurs over a small vertical interval of a larger permeable section. In the interval supporting heat generation, and above and below this interval, the mechanisms of radial conduction and convection are also presumed acting. Heat losses from the ignited interval are accounted for by vertical conduction. An analytical solution for the temperature distribution caused by radial movement of the burning front is presented. The effects of certain process variables are indicated and comparisons with Chu's results are made. THEORY To render the mechanism of forward combustion tractable to mathematical treatment, we idealize the problem to the extent of assuming continuous reservoir media possessing homogeneous and isotropic properties. The following additional assumptions are implicit in this analysis. 1. The thermal parameters, i.e., heat capacities, thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities are invariant with temperature and pressure. Moreover, the bounding media possess the same thermal properties as the bed of interest. 2. The temperatures of the porous media and its contained fluids at any point and at any time are equal. 3. The reaction rate between the oxidant gas and the fuel is infinite. This assumption implies that the incoming oxygen concentration instantaneously goes to zero within an infinitesimal distance, i.e., the width of the combustion zone is negligible. 4. The rate of gas injection is constant and corresponds to the average rate throughout the lifetime of the project. 5. The fuel concentration is constant throughout the volume of rock swept out by the burning zone. 6. There is complete burnoff of fuel. IRON-ORE beneficiation is becoming of vital importance to the Lake Superior region, since only a few decades will be needed to exhaust the direct shipping ores even if generous allowances are made for discoveries of new orebodies. If the region is to continue as the chief source of ore to the steel industry of the United States, it must concentrate or otherwise beneficiate the enormous tonnages of available iron formations. A beginning along this line has already been made. About one-fifth of the total shipment, even now, is the product of some sort of concentrating process, while another fifth is improved in physical structure by crushing, screening, drying, sintering, or some other similar method. The amount of material amenable to these processes is limited, however; and, in order to be able to utilize the billions of tons of iron formations that cannot be so beneficiated, an intensive study of their nature and concentration possi-bilities is necessary. As long as high-grade ores are available in ample quantities, ore dressing is economically impossible, but as soon, as the supply nears exhaustion it becomes necessary. At first the products of ore dressing must meet as nearly as possible the same specifications as the rich ores in order to be adapted to the reduction processes already established. The future requirements as to quality will depend on the one hand upon the ability of the ore dresser to eliminate undesired constituents and charac-teristics in the material, and on the other upon the adaptation of the reduction processes to the product that can be economically supplied. A better understanding of the blast furnace and other reduction reactions, and improvements in the preparation of raw materials, should enable the Michigan districts to continue to supply ore for a long time to come. The study and testing of the iron formations necessary to bring a utilization of the low-grade ores, though requiring time and effort on the part of all concerned, should not be postponed, especially since the economic situation forces the use of the highest grade ore in preference to the leaner material.

Stratigraphic Position of the Deposits.—During the progress of the geological survey of Arkansas, in the northern part of that State, it was found that the interval between recognizable Lower Silurian rocks below and recognizable Lower Carboniferous rocks above contains no representatives, or but poor representatives, of the whole Upper Silurian and Devonian series. In some places one passes in the space of a foot from Lower Silurian rocks to the Lower Carboniferous—the Boone chert of the Arkansas survey, or the " Burlington " beds; at other places this interval is 3 or 4 feet thick, but it is generally concealed by the ready decay of the black shale—the Eureka shale—which fills it, so that for a long time it was passed over undetected. It was only after considerable work in the region lying north of the Boston mountains, and by the valuable palzeontologic work of Dr. Henry S. Williams, of Yale University, who kindly accompanied me on a trip through this part of the State, that the importance of this interval came to be recognized, and the thin beds occupying it to be critically studied. It then appeared that this interval was occupied, for the most part, either by a greenish or black shale or by a sandstone; and eventually the sandstone was found to have a maximum thickness of 40 feet on South Sylamore creek in 15 N. 11 W., Section 21. It was, therefore, called Sylamore sandstone. The shale of this interval is generally from 3 to 10 feet thick; it is a constant feature of the geology through Carroll county, and is well exposed in the streets and cuts in and about Eureka Springe, and was for this reason named the Eureka shale. Its maximum thickness is 50 feet in the northwestern part of Benton county. The relations to each other of the Sylamore sandstone and the Eureka shale I have never determined satisfactorily; for

Chemical processing of ores has gained new im¬petus in recent years. The reasons are many. They range from the need to process ores that are difficult to beneficiate to the avoidance of pollution. Although many think of chemical processing as a hydrometallurgical operation there are other techniques. An example is chlorination. Chlorination, although examined and discarded by many investigators, is again being considered as a means of extracting uranium1, treatment of silver-lead ores2, and the recovery of base metals from pyrite cinder and ores3. Segregation roasting of copper and nickel ores, a process similar to chlorination, is another chemical treatment being revived.

THIS report is the first of a series planned by The Mineral Inquiry, organized by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to make factual studies of the world's mineral resources in their political and international relations. The efforts of The Inquiry are directed toward filling certain notable gaps in available information, without duplication of many other investigations touching this field which are being conducted by other organizations, public and private. Much of its work is indirect-suggesting topics for study by other individuals and organizations and aiding in their planning and correlation. The present report is designed to show the nationality of the commercial control of mineral resources, in addition to the geographic distribution of production by nation-in other words, the overlapping of political and commercial control. Detailed accuracy cannot be claimed for the figures presented. For some companies division of ownership by nationality has been very difficult to ascertain, as many companies are reluctant to dis-close the extent of their holdings in other corporations, and the impossi-bility of tracing all stock ownership is obvious. Also there are frequent changes in the distribution of. stock control. The percentages given rep-resent only the participation that has been identified definitely, even though it is known in some cases with fair certainty that larger interests exist, as, for instance, American participation in foreign chromite companies. In bringing together these figures we have had the cordial co-operation of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geologi-cal Survey, the Mineral Division of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, the Brookings Institution, and of many specialists connected with the mineral industries covered. The report does not cover the entire list of minerals. Coal, although it is one of the most important minerals, was omitted because , not more than one or two per cent of the world's production comes from mines that are owned by companies foreign to the countries where the coal is produced. Others, such as gold, are omitted because sufficient data have not yet been accumulated. It is hoped that some of these may be covered in subsequent reports. It is not our purpose here to discuss the significance of the figures sub-mitted, but only to point out the general nature of the problems on which they have a bearing.

THE rate of flotation of solid particles determines the percentage recovery of these particles which can be obtained during a given time interval. It is an established fact that the recovery is greatest in the fine sand size range and falls off on either side of this size range. It is also a fact that the history of the development of concentrating devices has been marked by a desire to recover the small particles: tables were developed to treat material too fine to recover in jigs; flotation recovers material too fine to be recovered on tables. As our ores become more complex and require finer grinding, a greater proportion is in the slow-floating size range. It is therefore of economic importance that the effect of size of particle upon rate of flotation be studied. Many studies have been made along this line. The present investigation attempts to quantify the rate of flotation by means of a rate equation, and then compares the effect of size upon the rate of flotation. It was found that the flotation rate constant increases with increase in diameter of particle in the size range smaller than the optimum size particle. The flotation rate constant decreases with an increase in diameter of particle in the size range coarser than the optimum size particle. This suggested two different actions taking place, and these are discussed. Suggestions for further work in order to improve the flotation rate of both fine and coarse particles are made. The usual method of expressing rate is to plot cumulative percent recovery vs time. If we knew the equation of this kind of curve we could replot it as a straight line, and the slope of the line would be an index of the magnitude of the flotation rate. It is easier to compare straight lines than curves. The basis used for obtaining the equation of the recovery vs time curve is the law of mass action. This law states that the "rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the `active masses' of the reacting substances present at any given time." This, of course, implies a constant temperature. We can modify this for our use by using the term flotation reaction instead of chemical reaction and the term floatable particle instead of active masses. [ ] where C denotes concentration of particles, t denotes time, k denotes a proportionality constant. If the exponent of C is 1, then we have a first order rate reaction. If the exponent of C is 2, then we have a second order rate reaction. For a first order rate reaction, we obtain, after integration, [ ] where k is again a proportionality constant and has the dimension of the reciprocal of time. C, is the original concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles. C, is the concentration or weight or percentage of floatable particles remaining in the flotation cell after time t. If all particles of the mineral to be floated were capable of floating we could take C, as 100 and C, would be 100 - R, where R is the cumulative percentage recovery of mineral at time t. But it is not usual for all of the particles to be capable of floating, because of surface oxidation, etc. Therefore, we must introduce a factor x which is the percentage of unfloatable mineral. Hence the first order equation is [ ] It has been proposed by various workers1-3 that this equation describes the flotation rate. More recently N. THE dendritic pattern of steels shown by deep etching is used exten-sively as a guide in the inspection and control of the great majority of steels used in ordnance construction and for many applications in indus-try. The value of macroexamination lies in the fact that it enables a qualified observer to make deductions concerning the general quality of relatively large pieces of metal. Not the least of these general character-istics is the nature and extent of the dendritic segregation in the steel, either in the cast condition or after mechanical or thermal treatments. PREVIOUS WORK Detailed methods for macroetching were outlined by Yatsevitch1 and have been standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. A comprehensive study of the occurrence, origin, and the chemical and crystalline nature of the dendritic structure was given by Keshian.2 The marked persistence of dendritic segregation in nickel steels is fully recognized and has been discussed by Sauveur and Reed' and by others. Very little, however, has been written on the effect of the various elements on the macrostructure of steels, and the purpose of this report is to submit evidence concerning the influence of chromium, nickel and molybdenum on the macrostructure of some 4 by 4-in. ingots cast and treated under closely controlled conditions.

LIQUID metal solution calorimetry is a convenient method for determining the heats of formation of solid compounds. In this technique the heat of formation is the difference between the measured heat effects on dissolution of the compounds and of mechanical mixtures of the components in the liquid metal.' The heat of solution of the mechanical mixture may be calculated from the measured heat effect. At infinite dilution of the solutes, this heat of solution is equal to the sum of the heats of solution of the separate components. If the heat of solution of one of the components is known, the value for the other can be derived; if both are known, they may be used to check the accuracy of the calorimetric technique. The heats of formation of the tellurides of cadmium, indium, tin, and lead have recently been measured by metal solution alorimetr. The heats of solution of indium, tin, lead, and tellurium at infinite dilution in liquid bismuth at 623"K, calculated from the measured heat effects on solution of the mechanical mixtures, are in good agreement with the published values. The heats of solution of cadmium and of tellurium calculated from the measured heat effect on solution in bismuth at 623'K of mechanical mixtures of cadmium and tellurium, however, do not agree with values estimated from the literature. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS The Heats of Solution of Indium, Tin, Lead, and Tellurium in Bismuth. The heat effects were measured when mechanical mixtures corresponding to the compounds In,Te, InTe, In2Te3, In2Te5, SnTe, and PbTe were dissolved in bismuth. The calorimetric procedure and the method of calculation have been described elsewhere.' The heats of solution of the mechanical mixtures were obtained by subtracting the change in heat content per gram-atom of the sample between the addition temperature (273°K) and the bath temperature (623"K), (H623°K - H273°K)S, from the measured heat effects. The calorimeter was calibrated with pure bismuth. The reported values of the measured heat effects are based on (HGoK - ^273oK)Bi = 4.96 kcal per g-atom.3 The measured heat effects are found to be linear functions of the solute concentrations of the bath in the dilute solution range. The values, extrapolated to infinite dilution, are listed in Table I, together with the heats of solution of the mechanical mixtures calculated using the published values of (H 623°K - H273°k)s for indium, tin, lead,3 and tellrium. All the error limits quoted in this work represent the spread of values obtained. The heats of solution in liquid bismuth at 623°K of mechanical mixtures of indium and tellurium in four different proportions were determined. Values of the heats of solution of the two components were then calculated from the resulting four simultaneous equations: The heats of solution at infinite dilution of tin and lead in liquid bismuth at 623°K were calculated from the heats of solution of the mechanical mixtures of tin and tellurium and of lead and tellurium using the heat of solution of tellurium calculated above. These values of the heats of solution are listed in Table I1 together with some published values for comparison.

THE Institute of Mining Engineers has shown so much interest in the educational problem of profitably combining theory and practice, that it seems especially appropriate to lay before its members the methods and aims of the mining laboratory of which I have charge, and in which one form of combination of hand with head work is now being tried. If anything may be contributed toward the solution of this problem by the discussion which follows, my purpose mill be attained. Whether it was wise or not to establish a mining school so far from the principal mining centres, does not now enter into the question. Given, a mining school already begun, how shall it be made most efficient in developing engineers who are trained to think for themselves as well as versed in the works of others ? This is the question with which we have had to deal. In considering the bearing of this laboratory work upon the students' preparation, it will be convenient to take it up under five different heads: 1. The methods and aims of the laboratory. 2. The advantage to students of having a part, at least, of their practical work in the curriculum of their school. 3. The advantage to be derived by mine; and works. 4. Degree of accuracy which may be attained in working ores on a small scale. 5. Reslts of work in the laboratory. 1. The Methods and Aims of the Laboratory.—During the May meeting of 1873, held in Boston, I had the privilege of reading before you a paper stating the plan; and aims of this laboratory. Since that time me have been constantly following out those plans, and are more than ever convineed that me are working in the right direction. We do not feel that the time we have spent has been in any sense thrown away. Perhaps the aims of the laboratory can be most clearly shown by illustration. Many young engineers have school thinking that they know everything. They go to the works, and expect to teach the superintendent something and the men a good deal, regardless of the fact that it is this spirit that has prejudiced workmen against schoolmen. The recent application of lineal analysislt2 to the austenite-martensite reaction has made possible a quantitative study of the kinetics of this transformation during rapid cooling. Martensite range curves can thus be constructed to portray the onset of the reaction at Ma and its subsequent progress as a function of temperature down to and below the ambient. It now seems in order to investigate other aspects of the martensite transformation, using this quantitative method of approach. One of the least understood characteristics of the austenite-martensite reaction is that of stabilization which has been defined by Troiano and Greninger3 as 'la lowering of Ma, resulting from aging, without change in chemical composition of the parent solid solution." In other words, if the hardening quench is arrested at a predetermined subcritical temperature (TA) for a sufficient period of time, more austenite may be retained at a given lower Or reference temperature (Tr) than if the steel had been cooled directly and rapidly to Tr in the first place. For the purposes of the work at hand, the extent of stabilization produced by the isothermal treatment at Th is measured explicitly in terms of the excess austenite (6) that exists in the steel at T,, over and above the amount that is normally present after direct quenching to T,. T, is conveniently taken to be room temperature, but this choice is not essential and is sometimes undesirable. The holding temperature (TA) may be above or below M,, and still cause stabilization depending upon the themistry of the austenite. stabilization has been found to occur in the presence of bainite4 and of martensite6,6,7,8 as well as in the absence of either,g The phe-nomenon of stabilization is not concerned with (and may even be obscured by) ferrite formation or any other type of phase change occurring at T~ that alters the chemistry of the remaining austenite. Such a structural change would obviously influence the martensite transformation during subscquent cooling. Stabilization, however, is more subtle; it appears to manifest itself without detectable variation of the austenite composition, whether in the presence or absence of transformation products. There are relatively few direct references to stabilization in the literature. The stabilizing effect of room temperature aging and tempering on the subzero transformation of retained austenite has been clearly shown in plain carbon,6,8 low alloy6s7.8 and high alloy tool steels.10'5 ssa- with the as-hardened steel, the degree of stabilization increases with tempering time and temperature through

George IV. Goetz, Milwaukee, Wis.: Mr. Campbell deserves much credit for his interesting paper. The literature of the development of the open-hearth process is distributed in many technical journals, and is difficult of access to many engineers. Since the development of the basic process, the open-hearth furnace has been raised from a subsidiary to an independent position. Certain high grades of soft steel can be produced in the basic open-hearth furnace, which cannot be produced by any other known process. In the United States the charges for the acid process generally consist of either scrap and pig-iron or so-called wash-metal and scrap : the pig-and-ore process, as carried out in England, is practiced but very little. The introduction of the basic process has made it possible to use about four times as much pig-iron with scrap as can be used in the acid mixtures. The availability of a cheap pig-iron, very low in silicon and sulphur, and carrying several per cent. of manganese, is one of the reasons why the basic open-hearth process has developed so rapidly in Germany, as regards the output per furnace and the excellent quality of the material produced. The acid Bessemer steel has an inherent stiffness, which is plainly shown when spring steel is made by the Bessemer and by the openhearth processes. In order to get them of about equal stiffness, the open-hearth steel must have about 0.60 per cent. carbon ; whereas, the Bessemer steel must then have ahout 0.45 carbon, the remaining constituents being apparently about the same in each product. It has proved impracticable, with American coke-pig-iron, to interrupt blowing at a certain point in order to make hard steel; and experience has therefore shown that it is best to eliminate nearly all the carbon, and then to recarburize to the desired point. Danville, the county seat of Montour county, Pa., was one of the earliest and best-known centers of the iron intlustry in the State. It is situated on the north bank of the north branch of the Sosquehanna river, twelve miles east of the confluence of the north and west branches of that river at Northurnberlttnd. The ore-belt, extending for a distance of twelve miles along the north bank, has been developed in a number of places, but nowhere so extensively as in the immediate vicinity of Danville. Hence, a description of the mines in that locality will suffice, as typical of the workings of the entire section. Geology. The Montour ridge consists of an anticlinal fold extending from the source of Wapwollopen creek on the east to the west branch of the Susquehanna, which it reaches at the mouth of Chilisquaque creek. According to the reports of the First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, the length of the ridge is nearly twenty-seven miles, with an average breadth of three-fourths of a mile, and a maximum elevation of six hundred feet in the vicinity of Danville, where it also attains its greatest width. Just north of Danville the Mahoning creek cuts through it, exposing the iron-ore on the hill-side, where advantage has been taken of this to work the beds on the southern slope of the ridge by means of drifts. The sections given in Fig. 1 are taken from the reports of the First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, made in 1858, by H. D Rogers, whose description of the Moatour ridge was so complete and accurate that the entire report was reprinted as an appendix to Vol. G 7 of the Second Geological Survey. Conversely, the engineer whose work is concerned with the coordination of power and communication lines in such a manner as to avoid electrical interference between these two types of facilities is concerned very much with this effective resistivity; to a lesser extent he is interested in the resistivities of individual formations. In connection with his work the coordination engineer often estimates the effective resistivity of the earth from measurements of the mutual impedances of lines; in other instances he derives from measurements of a different type the resistivities of different layers of the crust and synthesizes these to obtain an estimate of the effective resistivity. In connection with problems concerning the coordination of power and telephone lines, measurements from which earth resistivities can be estimated have been made at many points in the United States by the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and its associated companies, in cooperation with various power companies and with railroad companies having electrified sections of line. Other such measurements have been made by the Joint Subcommittee on Development and Research of the Edison Electric Institute and the Bell Telephone System. A study has been made of the correlation of these data with the ages and types of materials of the strata of the earth's crust at each of the test locations. The purpose of this study has been primarily to provide information to assist in predicting the order of magnitude of effective resistivities to be used in the preliminary consideration of problems concerned with the coordination of power and communication lines. To make the results of such a study most useful, it is essential that the geological data to be secured when such a prediction is wanted be readily obtainable. The firing of explosive charges by electricity dates back to 1745 when a Doctor Watson is said to have used an electric spark for igniting gunpowder. His method failed in practical application because, to ignite blasting powder, heat must be applied for a period longer than the duration of an electrostatic spark; Wheatstone found that this does not exceed 1/24000 sec. The usual result, therefore, of an electrical discharge in gunpowder is to scatter the grains, without igniting them. Benjamin Franklin partly overcame this difficulty by confining the powder and crushing grains that lay in the line of discharge. In 1822, after the primary cell had been discovered by Volta, Robert Hare, professor of chemistry at the University of Philadelphia, noticed the heating of a short piece of wire placed in the circuit of a voltaic battery. Later work by Oersted, Faraday, Wheatstone, and Henley resulted in the developmcnt of the magneto blasting machines. Fulminates of gold and silver are thought to have been discovcrcd by Cornelius Drebbel, about 1600. Pepys, in his diary for November 11, 1663, recounts a conversation with Doctor Allen, who told him about aurium fulminans "of which a grain ... put in a silver spoon and fired, will give a blow like a musquett and strike a hole through the silvel spoon downward, without the least force upward.'ll This fallacious belief that explosives act downwards only is still held by many who should know better. Fulminate of mercury was discovered by Howard in 1799. J. Shaw of Philadelphia is said to have invented a fulminate-of-mercury cap in 1814; his idea was later adopted by gunmakers in England and France. The principal advantages of mercury fulminate for use in detonators are the simplicity of exploding it and the great shock developed by its explosion.
