The firing of explosive charges by electricity dates back to 1745 when a Doctor Watson is said to have used an electric spark for igniting gunpowder. His method failed in practical application because, to ignite blasting powder, heat must be applied for a period longer than the duration of an electrostatic spark; Wheatstone found that this does not exceed 1/24000 sec. The usual result, therefore, of an electrical discharge in gunpowder is to scatter the grains, without igniting them. Benjamin Franklin partly overcame this difficulty by confining the powder and crushing grains that lay in the line of discharge. In 1822, after the primary cell had been discovered by Volta, Robert Hare, professor of chemistry at the University of Philadelphia, noticed the heating of a short piece of wire placed in the circuit of a voltaic battery. Later work by Oersted, Faraday, Wheatstone, and Henley resulted in the developmcnt of the magneto blasting machines. Fulminates of gold and silver are thought to have been discovcrcd by Cornelius Drebbel, about 1600. Pepys, in his diary for November 11, 1663, recounts a conversation with Doctor Allen, who told him about aurium fulminans "of which a grain ... put in a silver spoon and fired, will give a blow like a musquett and strike a hole through the silvel spoon downward, without the least force upward.'ll This fallacious belief that explosives act downwards only is still held by many who should know better. Fulminate of mercury was discovered by Howard in 1799. J. Shaw of Philadelphia is said to have invented a fulminate-of-mercury cap in 1814; his idea was later adopted by gunmakers in England and France. The principal advantages of mercury fulminate for use in detonators are the simplicity of exploding it and the great shock developed by its explosion.

The Ray Consolidated Copper Co.'s mining property is located on Mineral Creek, 6 miles north of Kelvin, at Ray, Pinal County, Ariz. (Fig. 1). The mining claims now owned by the company consist of 126 lode claims, comprising 2,144.9 acres, containing at the beginning of operations 82,904,368 tons of 2.19 per cent. copper ore. General Characteristics of the Orebody The main orebody is a disseminated deposit in schist and porphyry formed by secondary enrichment. Its existence was proved by churn drilling, and it is at present one of the largest proved copper deposits in the world. The orebody itself covers 205 acres with an average thickness of 121 ft., and occupies a definite belt which has a northwest direction. Its length is approximately 5,000 ft. The width varies, being about 2,000 ft. at the west end and 2,500 ft. at the east, narrowing down irregularly from both ends to a few feet in the center. The thickness of the body varies greatly along the line of lode, ranging from a few feet up to 470 ft. thick. The ore horizon is not constant, but varies, following in a broad sense the topography. The body in general dips slightly to the northeast, and is broken up by numerous small faults and fractures. The ore-bearing formations, consisting of mineralized schist and mineralized granite porphyry, stand fairly well and offer no difficulty in mining operations. The bulk of the ore is chalcocite disseminated in schist. In places cupriferous pyrite is closely associated with the chalcocite. The mineralized gr'anite-porphyry forhations are contiguous to the ore-bearing schist. • Overlying the orebody is an oxidized zone of leached iron-stained schist, averaging 252 ft. in thickness, termed "capping." A LACK of experimental data illustrating the effect of composition, particularly in respect to impurities, on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum-alloy die castings induced the authors and their associates to undertake a limited study of these relations. A number of commercial alloys .and several experimental variations of a commercial alloy were used for the investigation. Mechanical property, growth, steam, paraffin, salt spray and atmospheric exposure tests were employed. This paper deals with the more accelerated tests and the results they have produced. It is concluded that a high-silicon alloy with all impurities except iron strictly limited to small amounts will develop an excellent resistance to corrosion and retain satisfactory mechanical properties and casting characteristics. As a direct result of this investiga-tion an alloy of this character with superior corrosion resistance is now available commercially. In general, copper increases the strength and decreases the elongation and corrosion resistance. Tin reduces the mechanical properties and the resistance to corrosion. Iron reduces the elongation and, if excessively high, may adversely affect the tensile strength. Even excessively high iron contents do not affect the corrosion resistance, which is fortunate for the die caster as it is this element that is the most difficult to control. Nickel and zinc in limited amounts do not seem to affect the properties or corrosion resistance of at least the high-silicon alloy. Growth tests have confirmed the previous common belief that dimensional changes under either dry or wet conditions at 100° C. are too small to be of practical importance.

Lead sulfide concentrates, which may include other lead concentrates, are sintered on an up-draught sintering machine without the addition of any diluting agents or fluxes. Subsequently they are melted in an oil- or gas-fired rotary furnace. The sintering and melting processes are based upon the following roast-reaction: PbS + 2 PbO = 3 Pb + SO, PbS + PbSO, =2 Pb + 2 SO, For obtaining a lead bullion free from sulfur, the sintering process is carried out in such a way that the sinter product contains a small amount of excess oxygen above that to react with the sulfides. At the end of the melting process, when the reactions are finished, the remaining small amount of oxide residues is reduced with coal to which a certain percentage of soda ash (about 1 pct of the lead bullion) is added. For the lead smelting process described neither coke nor fluxes—except soda ash—are required. This process is being utilized by a European smelter successfully and with a high lead recovery. The consumption figures for the smelting of 100 tons per day of lead concentrates are indicated. The lead content of the lead concentrates from modern ore dressing plants ranges from 65 pct to above 80 pct. In most lead smelters of the world these concentrates are smelted in a blast furnace. For blast-furnace smelting the concentrates have to be desulfurized and agglomerated by sintering. A requirement for the perfect operation of a down-draught sintering machine and of a blast furnace is a maximum lead content in the feed of 40 to 45 pct. For this reason, some lead concentrates have to be diluted by adding return slags, limestone, and possibly iron oxide and sand. As an example, 100 tons of lead concentrate with 72 pct Pb would contain 13.5 tons of gangue (including the zinc). To produce a perfect sinter with 42 pct Pb it would be necessary to add 70 tons of flux and return slag, more than five times the original weight of the gangue, to the sinter mix and blast-furnace charge. A correspondingly large amount of coke would be required in order that all of these materials reach the heat of formation and the melting temperatures of the slag (1200" to 1400°C) inside the blast furnace. The roast-reaction process presents a possibility for lead recovery without dilution of the concentrates. In this process the concentrate mixed with coal is placed upon a Newnam-hearth and air is blown through nozzles into the heated mix. AS a result metalllic lead and a relatively great amount of so-called .'Grey Slag" with a lead content of 25 to 35 pct are formed. The slag is sintered to eliminate sulfur and, after addition of the requisite fluxes, treatt:d in a blast furnace. Owing to the poor recovery of lead from the hearths and to the unavoidable heavy hand-work plus the risk of poisoning this process is utilized in very few 112ad smelters today. Since in mxny countries of the world coke is expensive and difficult to obtain, it appeared feasible to use the principle of the roast-reaction by modern sintering and melting methods with recovery of the lead in electric, or oil, gas, or coal-fired furnaces. Two processes are utilized on an industrial scale: A) Lead smelting in the electric furnace of the Bolidens Gruv A/B in Sweden, as described by S. J. Walldcn, N. E. Lindvall, K.G. Gorling, and S. Lundquist. B) The self-fluxing lead smelting of Lurgi Gesell-schaft fiir Chemie und Huttenwesen m.b. H., Frankfurt a M, Germany, which is described in this paper. In the Boliden process referred to above the sinter mix is pelletized by enveloping return fines with layers of flue dust, limestone powder, and dried galena concentrate. The roasting and agglomeration are carried out on a down-draught machine, and a slight excess of sulfur is left in the sinter product. During the smelting in the electric furnance the roast-reactions occur and a slag poor in lead and a sulfur bearing lead are formed. This latter is subsequently oxidized in a converter to obtain lead bullion and dross. The Lurgi-process achieves the maximum possible extent of the roasting reaction on the sintering machine. In this paper, no attempt will be made to theorize on subsidence. Only known data and actual facts will be given, with a few exceptions noted where other factors and outside influences tend to change subsidence directly resulting from porphyry caving. The area under observation is known as the Southeast Extension of the East orebody. The orebody is irregular in outline and dips to the south and the east, extending in depth from about 425 ft. below the surface to 1050 ft. below the surface. In the upper horizon, the orebody is about 400 ft. long and 150 ft. wide. At 720 ft. below the surface, the ore outline is approximately 450 by 170 ft.; 70 ft. below this, it is 500 by 110 ft., with an extension at the north end to the east 270 by 120 ft. From this elevation to about 900 ft. below the surface, the ore spreads out to the cast and south, being about 700 by 500 ft. between these vertical limits. Below this it pinches out and at 1060 ft. below the surface is only 100 by 100 ft. The nearest point of the orebody—which is on the northwest side—is 600 ft. 'southeast of the Sacramento shaft. The country rock is all porphyry. Fig. 1 is a vertical east-west section showing orebody and original surface. The surface over the orebody was fairly regular and in this area and adjacent to it were portions of the surface plant, roads, and the main plant railroad to the concentrator. Fig. 2 is a map of the surface over the porphyry area. Caving operations started in April, 1925, at the approximate top of the orebody. The first lift was on the 600-ft. level; the ore was extracted by means of the Morenci timbered slide method and was from 425 to 455 ft. below the surface over an area of about 22,000 sq. ft. This lift was finished in May, 1926. The second lift, on the 650-ft. level, was already in production by May, 1926, so extraction of ore was continuous. This lift was 48 ft. high and covered an area of about 30,000 sq. ft. The ore from this lift was extracted by means of a modified Morenci timbered slide method. This lift was finished in March, 1927. IF the tonnage of merchantable iron ore remaining in the Lake Superior district is divided by the average of the annual shipments for the past 20 years, it will be found that this ore supply will be exhausted in approximately 35 years. This computed exhaustion period would be an indication of the future activities of the iron-mining industry if it were not for the fact that merchantable ore is being manufactured from low-grade ore, of which there is an almost inexhaustible supply in the Lake Superior district. It is true that at present only the simplest of these low-grade ores are being concentrated to any considerable extent, but progress is being made with the treatment of the more complex ores, and now, in addition to 20 washing plants on the Mesabi Range, three plants are equipped with jigs for the treatment of ore that cannot be concentrated simply by washing. The latest addition to the ore-treating plants of the Mesabi Range is a magnetic roasting and concentration plant at Cooley, Minn., in which ore that cannot be concentrated either by washing or by jigging is roasted to the magnetic state and concentrated on magnetic separators. This plant is beginning its third season of operation, and while it is too soon to make definite predictions, there are strong indica-tions that this new process may make commercially possible the manu-facture of high-grade, merchantable iron ore from large quantities of low-grade ore now considered worthless. After the iron oxide contained in an ore has been converted to mag-netite, almost any desired grade of concentrate can be produced, using magnetic-concentration equipment of the types now in general use for the concentration of the natural magnetites of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The conversion of hematite (Fe2O3) to magnetite (Fe3O4) is easily accomplished by heating the ore to a dull red tempera-ture in a reducing atmosphere. The reaction is slightly endothermic, and while it requires 200 B.t.u. to heat to 900° F. one pound of hematite ore containing 45 per cent Fe, it requires only 100 B.t.u. to convert the oxide into magnetite. In the year 1900 about 212 million tons of bituminous coal were produced in the United States. Almost none of this was produced by surface mines (Fig. 1), because there was no large equipment suitable for stripping overburden at that time. By 1915 the surface mines had built up their capability largely through use of the steam shovel to the point that they produced 2.8 million tons of the nation's total production of 443 million tons. Over the intervening years between 1915 and 1970 surface mining provided a continually increasing percentage of the nation's bituminous coal, stimulated by the growing availability of giant surface mining machines, some of which are presently capable of removing 220 cu yd of earth with one bite of their mighty buckets. In 1970 the nation's surface mines produced 244 million tons of bituminous coal, over 40% of the total national production. On the other hand, the nation's underground mines hit a peak of 560 million tons in 1920, dropped to a low of 273 million tons in 1961, and are presently on a very slow rise. Environmental pressures generally oppose surface mining, and have forced coal companies to consider more underground mining in future planning. Also, since strippable reserves are decreasing in the eastern states, an increase in underground mining is expected over the coming years. However, in the western states there are enormous reserves to be extracted by surface methods. Why has surface mining increased, while underground mining has decreased? It's largely a matter of economics. The cost per ton is greatly reduced by surface mining because of the relative ease of obtaining the coal. Also, there is a much greater percentage of coal recovery-nearly 85% in surface mines within the minable area, as compared to an average of about 50% in underground mines. Much surface mining recovers coal that could not be extracted by underground methods because of coal bed thinness, or multiple beds close together, split seams, the nature of the roof, and other geologic conditions. THE work of Merica1 and other investigators indicates that the phenomenon of age-hardening in. alloys of the duralumin type is primarily dependent upon the variation in the solubility of copper with temperature. In addition to copper, however, these alloys contain small amounts of magnesium, silicon, manganese and iron, which may affect the age-hardening either directly or indirectly. The effect of these elements on the solubility of copper and on the manner in which this solubility varies with the temperature is of considerable interest, therefore. The effect of magnesium is of especial interest because apparently it exerts a marked effect on the natural or room-temperature aging of alloys of the type described.2 A series of investigations3 has been in progress in the research laboratories of the Aluminum. COPPER and the copper-base solid solutions readily form twin crystals when plastically deformed at a suitably elevated temperature or annealed after cold deformation. In fact, no feature of the microstructure of these materials is more prominent or characteristic than these straight-sided bands or simple lines of division which sometimes come from groups of thin polysynthetic lamellae, penetrating part way or wholly through the parent grain substance, but often divide the grain into a few or perhaps only two crystallographically related parts. Nearly always the bands as seen in the usual microscopic examination of a specimen come into vivid contrast with the adjacent crystalline material owing to the inherent difference in orientation. Bands which under special conditions of orientation cannot be seen with vertically incident light are often visible under oblique illumination and, when this fails, contrasting effects usually may be obtained by using polarized light. There is no longer any doubt that these synthetic banded structures obtained in the ordinary course of working and annealing are due to twinning of the spinel type which was observed long ago in a number of metals crystallizing in the isometric system.1 It has been customary in metallurgical literature to designate these synthetic twins, which grow into prominence during an annealing process, as "annealing twins" without regard to the actual mode of their formation, which is, indeed, obscure and with scant recognition of the fact that prior deformation is essential, no twins having been observed in metal of known unstrained history. This is questionable; especially in view of. the fact that in a number of metals and minerals, reorientation into the twin configuration is known to occur as a result of a simple shearing mechanism along the recognized twinning planes and the

An optical and electron microscope study was made on a commercial 302 stainless steel heat treated for massive carbide precipitation. Convincirg evidence was obtained that the grain boundary precipitate does not grow away from the grain boundary into the matrix, but grows as a network of large thin dendrites in between the grains. IN austenitic stainless steels the carbon in supersaturated solution precipitates when the steel is heated in the temperature range 450" to 1000°C. During such heat treatments the chromium-rich carbide occurs primarily at the grain boundaries and has adverse effects on the corrosion resistance and low-temperature ductility of the material. It has been shown that the morphology of the precipitated particles differs widely depending on the time and temperature of the heat treatment, the nature of the boundary, the misfit between the grains, and so forth.1"5 It was assumed by Mahla et al.,' Streicher,' and Mc Nutt' that the carbide particles which nucleate in the grain boundary grow in various geometric or dendritic forms away from the boundary into the matrix. However, Kinzel,' Hatwell et a, and Plateau et aL4 found that the particles nucleate in the grain boundary and grow as a network of thin dendrites in the grain boundary interface. We have made a comprehensive studyg of the precipitation occurring in a commercial 302 austenitic stainless steel heat treated for times ranging from 0.15 to 1500 hr at various temperatures from 480" to 1065"~. This study was made to elucidate the influence of heat treatments on both the mechanical and the corrosion properties of this steel. Part of this investigation which is pertinent to the morphology of the grain boundary carbides referred to above is separately reported here. We found that the particles which nucleated in the boundaries grew in the interface of these boundaries, thus supporting the viewpoints of Kinzel,' Hatwell et al.,3 and Plateau et al.4 Furthermore, when carbide particles nucleated in the matrix very close to the boundaries, they possessed a morphology distinctively different from the particles growing in the grain boundaries. MATERIAL A study of metallographic samples and of fracture surfaces of a 302 stainless steel is reported in this paper. The composition and heat treatments are listed in Table I. Polished and etched samples were examined und813r the optical microscope, and carbon extraction replicas of etched micrographic samples and various fracture surfaces3'8'9 were examined under the electron microscope. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A representative optical micrograph of the 302 steel, condition A, is shown in Fig. l(a). Particles can be seen on the grain boundaries but no traces can be found of particles which grow from the grain boundaries into the matrix. A carbon extraction replica of this sample shows numerous large thin dendrites, Fig. l(b). The lateral dimension of such carbide particles vary up to 100 p, and their thickness estimated from the amoun! of electron penetration i:; between 500 and 1000A. Such large dendrites are extracted from almost all grain boundaries and, if they had grown into the grains, they would definitely be revealed by etching traces in the matrix, Fig. l(a). The reason why these large dendrites on the extraction replica appear to be grown into the grain is due to the mechanism of the extraction replica process. Thus, these dendrites are supported by the carbon replica film only at the edges originally along the grain boundary trace A-A, Fig. l(b), in the polished metal section and have subsequently fallen over onto the carbon replica film during handling. Although such dendrites generally fall only to one particular side of the grain boundary trace, one finds occasionally that parts of a dendrite have fallen to both sides, as shown in Fig. l(b). Further evidence for the growth of carbide in the grain boundary can be obtained from the appearance of fracture surfaces. Teamwork is the key to an efficient organization. Cooperation among mining staff members is an obligation owed to the company. The more cooperation the metallurgist receives from underground, the higher milling yield will be, which in turn makes for a greater mine profit. There is no pay for metal left in mill tailings. The metallurgist is not in a position to be of help to either the geologist or mining engineer, but can receive valuable assistance from both. Therefore, the metallurgist must win underground cooperation. The mining engineer is usually interested in geology because of its relation to ore control; in milling because that is where the rock goes. However, any overlapping of interest between geologist and metallurgist is quite remote.

Chemically, the diamond is composed of the element carbon in its pure crystallized state. The diamond crystallizes in the isometric system, and the most common forms are the octahedron and dodecahedron, while the (24-sided) tetrahexa-hedron is not uncommon. Cube diamonds with beveled edges representing the combination 8 0 8 and 8 0 2 are occasionally found in the Bultfontein and Premier (Wesselton) mines at Kimberley, South Africa. The diamonds from various mines have distinctive forms of crystallization, or variations of the same forms, so characteristic that those familiar with South African diamond-mines and their products can determine positively from which mine any given parcel of diamonds has been obtained. It is not always possible to determine the source of each individual diamond, for similar stones are occasionally found in digerent mines; but these are exceptions to the rule. There is a difference in the luster, shape or crystalline form of the diamonds from the various mines that gives each mine some distinctive characteristic. In one mine nearly all of the crystals are sharp-edged octahedrons, while in another, dodecahedrons with rounded faces predominate. One might give no end of peculiarities of the diamonds from the various mines; but it will suffice for the purposes of this paper to state the fact that such distinctive characteristics do occur. From this observation it may be concluded that the diamonds in the mines of the Eimberley district, which occupies a small area (see Fig. I), did not have a common origin. The diamond is the most impenetrable of all known substances, and will scratch any other stone, or the hardest steel. It is a very strong reflector of light, and refracts incident rays more than any other substance except crocoite.l

DuXing 1942, Louisiana attained the rank of fourth among the great oil-producing states of this country. Its present prominent position is the result of an orderly and systematic program of exploitation with emphasis on conservation. Even before the functioning of M-68, the Federal spacing order, development and production in Louisiana were regulated by various acts of legislation, the most recent of which and by far the most effective is Act 157 of 1940. Under the authority of this act, it has been possible for the Department of Conservation to hold many public hearings and thereby to secure data and evidence regarding the feasibility of issuing rules and regulations for development of various oil and gas fields in the state. As a result of information compiled at such public hearings, many orders have been issued by the Commissioner of Conservation that have in most cases provided reasonable solutions to the problems that arise in the exploitation and development of fields in this state. Probably one of the most effective powers granted the Commissioner of Conservation in the state of Louisiana has been the authority to provide for fieldwide unitiza-tion and pooling of condensate fields. This has led to the erection of huge cycling plants in Louisiana, which permit the most efficient recovery of the liquid content of the reservoirs, and further conserve most of the gas reserve that undoubtedly will be of considerable future value. Many months have passed since various orders of the Department of Conservation were put into effect, and all are accomplishing their purpose; namely, the elimination of waste. Although the effectiveness of these orders provides considerable satisfaction to the members of the Department of Conservation, it is also a tribute to the members of the oil and gas industry in Louisiana, who, in addition to providing carefully prepared technical data, have also given unstinting cooperation and have thereby enabled the Department to cope intelligently with the many problems. Production On Dec. 31, 1942, oil and/or gas was being produced in 50 parishes, or 78 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 12 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. This is indeed an enviable record for any state. However, it is reasonable to assume that eventually all parishes in the state of Louisiana will be productive. From a geological viewpoint, there is no apparent reason to assume otherwise—a point that a11 operators seeking oil and gas production in this state may well bear in mind. Twenty new fields were found during 1942—a rate of discovery that does not compare favorably with the 30 new fields found during 1941. The record of discoveries in Louisiana during 1942 is further disappointing when it is realized that 8 of the 20 new fields discovered were gas fields. As a result of information compiled at such public hearings, many orders have been issued by the Commissioner of Conservation that have in most cases provided reasonable solutions to the problems that arise in the exploitation and development of fields in this state. Probably one of the most effective powers granted the Commissioner of Conservation in the state of Louisiana has been the authority to provide for fieldwide unitiza-tion and pooling of condensate fields. This has led to the erection of huge cycling plants in Louisiana, which permit the most efficient recovery of the liquid content of the reservoirs, and further conserve most of the gas reserve that undoubtedly will be of considerable future value. Many months have passed since various orders of the Department of Conservation were put into effect, and all are accomplishing their purpose; namely, the elimination of waste. Although the effectiveness of these orders provides considerable satisfaction to the members of the Department of Conservation, it is also a tribute to the members of the oil and gas industry in Louisiana, who, in addition to providing carefully prepared technical data, have also given unstinting cooperation and have thereby enabled the Department to cope intelligently with the many problems. Production On Dec. 31, 1942, oil and/or gas was being produced in 50 parishes, or 78 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 12 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. This is indeed an enviable record for any state. However, it is reasonable to assume that eventually all parishes in the state of Louisiana will be productive. From a geological viewpoint, there is no apparent reason to assume otherwise—a point that a11 operators seeking oil and gas production in this state may well bear in mind. Twenty new fields were found during 1942—a rate of discovery that does not compare favorably with the 30 new fields found during 1941. The record of discoveries in Louisiana during 1942 is further disappointing when it is realized that 8 of the 20 new fields discovered were gas fields. THAT lead and zinc deposits are the result of prolonged, slow deposition is the idea of most students of ore deposits, -and in many cases, where the ore-bearing solutions have been very weak or the precipitating conditions have been very feeble, the ore accumulations have undoubtedly taken a long period of time. As these two vital, conditions have been subject to great variations in the different mining camps, the following example is highly interesting in showing that deposition can be very rapid under favorable conditions, geologically speaking, and also extremely recent. In fact, the writer is inclined to regard most, if not all, of the Mississippi Valley deposits of lead and zinc as probably being very young, at least not older than Tertiary, if not Quarternary, in age. The extensive Joplin lead and zinc district, in southwestern Missouri, which is about 60 years old and has numerous mines that were abandoned from 1 to 50 years ago, shows that the lead and zinc today are in an active condition of solution and redeposition, although these two metals occur in the predominant form of sulfides. The mine waters from the older and more or less abandoned portions of the district are frequently so acid, mainly from the oxidation of associated pyrite, as to necessitate the use of wooden pipes and pumps. The first boom in the Oklahoma zinc fields, which is the southwestern extension of the Joplin district, occurred when ore was accidentally struck in drilling a water well. Among the mines then opened up was the Mission mine, at Lincolnville, Ottawa County, Okla. This mine was opened' in 1903 in lean "sheet ground," or a flat blanket formation of chert carrying disseminated zinc blende, or "jack," and galena. The ore-body was very free from iron pyrites and the concentrates were very high grade, the "mineral," or lead concentrates, assayed 80 to 85 per cent. lead and the jack, or sphalerite, assayed 60 to 65 per cent. zinc. The orebody was very shallow, occurring at a depth of 75 to 95 ft. (22 to- 28, in.) and very wet, requiring three or four pumps to handle the water. The

INTRODUCTION THE situation in the United States, at the present time, regarding the supply of manganese ores and alloys of manganese is one of great seriousness and is likely to become increasingly so while the European war continues. The two principal iron-manganese alloys, ferromanganese and spiegeleisen, are indispensable in steel manufacture, being used extensively in the Bessemer and openhearth processes.. Spiegeleisen, the lower alloy, contains between 15 and 25 per cent., and ferromanganese, the higher alloy, between 60 and 80 per cent., of manganese. Besides manganese the alloys contain iron and carbon. On the market ferromanganese is usually quoted on the basis of 80 per cent. manganese, and spiegeleisen on the basis of 20 per cent. manganese. The consumption of ferromanganese has been increasing during recent years at the expense of spiegeleisen, because larger quantities of the latter must be used to ac-complish the same purpose with the result that the amount of carbon introduced with it into the molten metal is frequently injuriously great. Manganese ore proper, in the form of manganese dioxide, is used extensively in many chemical industries, especially for oxidizing purposes. It is also used for the manufacture of both wet and dry electric cells and in the manufacture of paints and dyes. The manganese ore used in this country has been derived hitherto from three principal sources:. Southern Russia, Southern British India and East Central Brazil. The following tables show the quantity of manganese ore imported from these countries, and (for comparison) the domestic production, during 1912, 1913 and 1914. The imported manganese ore has been used largely in the manufacture of iron-manganese alloys and in addition large quantities of the alloys themselves have been imported, chiefly. from Great Britain, Germany and other European countries.

Tests to increase knowledge concerning the process of hydraulic fracturing have been performed on three wells in the Allegheny field in western New York. The fracture orientation and its physical appearance at the well-bore was determined by impression packers run at appropriate times throughout the program. Fract~tre azi171uth and its dimensions thus determined were compared to the rock properties and treatment conditions. Logs to provide data concerning rock properties and to improve identification of vertical fractures were run before each step of the fracture treatment. Pressure osc~illu~iot~s were studied after each phase of tile treatments surface pressures during treatment. These measurements show that subsurface pressures exhibit many of the same characteristics as surface pressures during treatment of a well; however, transient pressures are dampened and deelayed in time at the bottom of the well when COmpared with surface pressures. Data obtained from this study provides a means to help locale and determine orientation of vertical fractures made in the open wellbore. Although these rests were performed in only one area, much of the information gained may be applied to fracturing programs in orher areas. INTRODUCTION In this study, various tests were made to provide data to better understand formation fracturing in situ. The reservoir studied is the Richburg oil sand which is a part of a series of predominantly grey sandstones and shales with occasional brown sandstone layers, known as the Caneadea unit of the Canadaway group of Upper Devonian age. Average physical characteristics of 12 cored wells in this area are 13-ft thick gross sand formation, 12-ft thick net sand. 1.7 md permeability, 11 percent porosity, 44 percent oil saturation (before secondary recovery) and 16 percent water saturation (before secondary recovery). This particular area of the Allegheny oil field was originally drilled prior to 1890. The first waterflood secondary recovery attempt was made in 1929. The present sustained waterflood development began in 1951 and is being carried out on a 4.5 to 5-acre spacing. Objectives of these tests were to (I) study fracture azimuth and dimension in relation to rock properties and treating conditions, (2) improve fracture identification techniques, (3) compare surface and subsurface pressure during all phases of treatment and (4) compare the periods of the fluid column oscillations occurring after each phase of treatment. Although the areas of investigation listed appear divergent in purpose, the program was designed primarily to increase knowledge of down-hole conditions leading to rock failure and extension of the fracture thus created. TEST PROCEDURES Wells upon which tests were conducted are designated as Wells 1 through 3. Well 2 was located 440 ft north of Well 1, and Well 3 was located approximately 880 ft west of Well 1. Wells 1 and 2 were completed with cable tools, while the producing interval of Well 3 was rotary cored using fresh water as the drilling fluid to obtain oriented cores. Tests were divided into separate phases on each well as the fracturing program progressed and consisted of measurements performed prior to treatment, during and after the formation breakdown operation. during fracture treatment and after treatment. To verify location and azimuth of the fracture created, and to obtain an impression of wellbore irregularities, a packer was used (Fig. 1). This packer was lowered on tubing into the wellbore opposite the interval under study and inflated in stages to allow the impression material to conform to the wall of the wellbore. A magnetic compass was attached to the tool for orientation reference. Impressions made prior to treatment showed no existing fractures in the wells under study. Although coke is the acknowledged metallurgical fuel, and has been extensively used in this country for more than thirty years, yet the facts on record in regard to its physical properties are exceedingly meagre; and this is also true, but in a less degree, of its chemical composition. An investigation is being carried on in the National Museum which is intended to supply, so far as may be, this deficiency, and through the kindness of Professor Baird, Director of the Museum, I am permitted to present to the Institute a summary of a portion of the results already obtained. So far as I am aware, the credit for the first systematic investigation of the physical properties of coke belongs to Mr. John Fulton, Mining Engineer of Cambria Iron Co. The results of this investigation have been published in Report L, Second Geological Survey, Pennsylvania, 1875, and in a pamphlet setting forth the advantages of the Connellsville coke, the latter published also by the " Virginias"* His results are not altogether free from experimental errors, and the assumption that "the specific gravities of coke and water are very nearly alike "- is scarcely warranted. It has seemed to me, therefore, desirable to make an independent investigation of the physical properties of coke on a plan somewhat different from that adopted by Mr. Fulton. The authors of the previous comment stated that Dorn and Rajnak33 and others34-40 concluded that "agreement with this function [(t'/tp) -f(Un/2Un) = T/Tc} may be used as a criterion for that (the Peierls) mechanism of deformation". In contrast, however, Dorn and Rajnak33 and others34-40 never made such a statement. In order to clarify the issues involved it is appropriate to recapitulate the conditions that must be satisfied in order to suggest that some deformation process might obey the Peierls mechanism: 1) Within permissible variations due to changes in the slope of the Peierls hill the T*/Tp - T/Tc relationship must be obeyed. Although some mechanisms, e.g.. solute atom stress field, recombination of dissociated partials in bcc metals, intersection of dissociated dislocations, and so forth, give about the same t* - T relationship, other mechanisms, such as cross slip, disruption of attractive junctions, climb, motion of jogged screw dislocations, and so forth, give distinctly different t*-T relationships. On this basis some distinction can be made of the various mechanisms. 2) An important feature of the Peierls mechanism concerns its physical origin based on the nucleation of pairs of kinks. The value of T* at 0°K increases with the density of dislocation (i.e. , cold work) for the intersection mechanism and it increases with the square root of the atomic fraction of solute atoms in the solute atom interaction mechanism. In contrast the value of t* at 0°k, for the Peierls mechanism which depends only on the line energy and the shape of the Peierls hills. is independent of cold working and the square root of the solute atom concentration. These differences have been employed by various investigators for elimination of a few other possible mechanisms. On the other hand it is not possible to eliminate all mechanisms, e.g., the recombination of dissociated dislocations in bcc metals, and so forth, on this basis alone. 3) Further discrimination between possible mechanisms is based on the activation volume.
