Twenty-two pit slides that occurred in two Canadian open pit mining properties are analyzed. Information on the results of laboratory tests of the rocks and a brief description of the geological environment are also presented. One deduction from the study is that slides seem to be predictable by using established theory. This corroboration indicates that, contrary to normal mining practice, the appropriate slope angle should vary with the height of the wall. In addition, if the general ground water level around an open pit can be reduced, the appropriate slope angles of the walls could then be increased by a determinable amount. The ultimate objective of these investigations is to determine the relationship between the percentage probability of failure of any slope designed with specific strength paraheters. With this relationship it would then be possible to determine optimum slope angles. Because of changes in various economic factors, open pits are now being mined to much greater depths than previously. The need to keep stripping ratios low without endanrrerine.-- lives and equipment provides a strong incentive to determine the maximum practicable wall slopes. Applied research work is currently being conducted to establish the methods for analyzing optimum slopes.

A three ton per day blast furnace using blast temperatures up to 2200°F was operated to recover manganese from open-hearth slag and manganiferous iron ore. The spiegel product containing 12 to 24 pct Mn was blown in a basic converter to high manganese oxide slag as described in the paper which follows this one. HE steel industry, which uses over 900,000 short tons of contained manganese yearly, depends on the maintenance of supplies of manganese from foreign sources such as India, Gold Coast, and Union of South Africa. Domestic ores furnish less than 10 pct of the yearly requirements of metallurgical ores and, unfortunately, the United States has no large, or even moderate, grade deposits that could supply a major portion of the requirements for many years. It may be necessary to obtain manganese from low grade materials, even though the cost is appreciably higher than when imported ores are used. An American Iron and Steel Institute questionnaire prepared in 1949 revealed the startling fact that open-hearth slags contained about as much manganese as is imported annually. The quantity of slag produced each year by integrated steel plants (not including cold-melt shops) and the manganese contained in the slag follows: Flush slag, 4,500,000 net tons a year containing 408,000 net tons Mn; tap slag, 7,230,000 net tons a year containing 364,000 net tons Mn; for a total of 772,000 net tons Mn. Some of this slag is returned to blast furnaces but about 75 pct would be available for the recovery of manganese. In several decades, when many of the present sources of high manganese ores have been depleted, open-hearth slag and manganiferous iron ore may become the major source of the manganese required for steel production. In 1948, manganese-ore imports from the U.S.S.R. were 427,000 net tons or 34 pct of the foreign ore. Imports from this source were only 81,000 tons in 1949. It became evident that adequate stockpiles of manganese could not be accumulated for many years. The Bureau of Mines initiated an extensive research program on methods for increasing domestic production of manganese and entered into a cooperative agreement with the American Iron and Steel Institute for recovering manganese from open-hearth slags whereby the Institute provided additional research funds and trained operating personnel. Description of Process and Equipment Numerous pyrometallurgical and hydrometallur-gical processes and combinations of the two can be applied to the recovery of manganese from open-hearth slag and manganiferous iron ore. The process being developed at the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of Mines consists of: 1—Reduction of open-hearth slag in a blast furnace to recover the iron and manganese as spiegel-eisen with 12 to 24 pct Mn. 2—Selective oxidation of the manganese from the blast-furnace metal in a basic-lined converter to produce a high manganese slag with up to 60 pct Mn content, which is a synthetic ore for the production of ferromanganese. The mineralogy of natural iron ore samples and their slimes have been investigated and the nature of slime interference in iron ore flotation has been studied. The results have been correlated with the flotation behavior of a natural ore sample. Various conclusions have been reached as a result of these studies. In the flotation of iron oxide ores, desliming is generally considered to be an essential step to successful separation, irrespective of whether the iron oxide or siliceous gangue minerals are to be floated, although some workers have found empirically that certain collectors and reagent combinations are less sensitive to the presence of slime than others. The detrimental effect of slime is considered to be twofold. First, the presence of slime presupposes a high reagent consumption because of high specific surface. When clays are present and when cationic collectors are used abstraction by ionic exchange may augment this condition. Attempts to compensate by the addition of large amounts of reagent result in only partial correction. Second, slime coatings on granular particles tend to interfere with the bubble-mineral contact. The nature of slime coatings in flotation is quite complex and has been the subject of considerable study; an attempt was recently made by Fuerstenau et al.' to relate the slime-coating density with flotation recovery and with the properties of the electrical double layer at the mineral surfaces. Although major constituent minerals in the oxidized iron ores of the Mesabi and Cuyuna ranges are hematite and goethite (limonite) as the iron oxides, and quartz and chert as the siliceous gangue, very little is known of the mineralogy and of the chemical and physical characteristics of the slimes, and still less of the interaction between slimes, collector, and the mineral surfaces. For pragmatic reasons iron ore slimes are defined as — 20p material, based upon the calculated settling velocity of a quartz sphere of the stated diameter, and of all other equal-settling mineral particles. Active slime interference with flotation is usually attributed to particles 5p in size or finer, the extent of such interference appearing to depend not only on the mineralogy but also on the size distribution of each mineral in the slime fraction. The objective of this work was to acquire a more specific knowledge of the constitution of iron ore slimes and of their role in flotation. The mineralogi-cal composition of natural slimes was obtained by differential thernal analysis (hereinafter referred to as DTA), electron microscopy, and chemical and X-ray analyses. Some flotation tests were made on natural ore samples. The surface properties of several constituent minerals were investigated by electrophoretic measurements and by determination of the adsorption of some typical flotation collectors. Finally, simplified flotation tests were made on granular goethite and quartz in the presence of various artifically prepared slimes; the results were compared with laboratory flotation tests made on natural ores. MATERIAL AND METHODS Mineralogy of Some Iron Ore Slimes: Samples of two wash-ore tailing::, hereinafter identified as A* and B, *Sample A of the present investigation 18 the same am ore A in ref. 3. of a wash ore C, and of a paint rock D, all from the Mesabi range, were selected for investigation on the basis of prior information concerning their flotation behavior. The two wash-ore tailings, when deslimed, were known to respond well to flotation, whereas the wash ore was high in goethite, tended to be slimy, and responded poorly to flotation. The paint rock also exhibited sliming tendencies, and was suspected to contain relatively large quantities of clay minerals because of its high A1203 content. Gruner states that the paint rock of the Mesabi frequently contains kaolinite. To ascertain the relative sliming tendencies of each sample a standardized desliming method was employed. Although the process to which I refer in this paper has been in successful operation for nearly five years, during which time it has been introduced, superseding all other processes having in view the same end, in almost every lead refinery in the country, no description of it, giving economical data, has ever appeared in print, nor has the process been known in its details to any considerable number of engineers beside those conducting it at their works. A discussion of this subject at the present time becomes especially interesting in view of a late publication in the Prussian ministerial organ for Mining and Metallurgy, by Dr. Wedding, in which the method of treating the zinc-silver-lead alloy by distillation, as finally settled upon at Tarnowitz, is very minutely and fully described. It is the more interesting, because in that article reference is made to the American method in an unfavorable light, while, at the same time, it is clear from the article itself, that the most important details of the process, besides the one that it is conducted in black-lead retorts, mere not at all understood. In publishing herewith the details of our American method, one of my objects is to invite comparisons between our simple and direct process and the elaborate one at Tarnowitz. This paper is a description of the opera-tion and results of a Humphreys Spiral Silt Cleaning Plant at the Powderly Colliery 01 The Hudson Coal Co. during the first nine months of operation and follows a preliminary description given at the .Institute cite Institute in May, 1947, in a paper titled "Preparation of Anthracite Silt for Boiler Fuel in a Humphreys Spiral Test Plant" by H. H. Otto, V. H. Wilson and W. L. Dennen. This plant is considered a full size op-erating test plant and, like all new plants, numerous minor changes in the methods of operation have been made from time to time to secure the results desired. Views of the silt preparation plant and of the screening house are given in Fig I and 2. This plant consists of 48 spirals in 8 batteries of 6 spirals each, 36 of which were to be operated as primary spirals and the remaining 12 as secondary spirals. A brief description of the plant and its operation follows. The only material cleaned at the plant during 1947 was that carried in the underflow from the Thickener which han-dles the Breaker waste water. This under-flow, amounting to approximately 2000 gpm of water and containing 12.6 pct of solids, is pumped to vibrating screens where the plus 3/16-in. material is removed. (Fig 3). This oversize material drops into a pocket from which it is trucked to the run-of-mine tipple for re-preparation.

(New York Meeting, October, 1918.) THE problem of increasing blast: furnace efficiency through diminution of flue-dust production while operating with burdens consisting largely of fine ores has of recent years attracted the attention of metallurgists, whether directly or indirectly interested in the economies of iron smelting, and the various methods evolved from theory or practice have been submitted to wide discussion. After the very thorough and, at that time, exhaustive view of the whole subject, which was afforded to the industry by the meeting of this Institute in February, 1912, the subject was again taken up at the meeting of the Verein deutscher Eisenhüttenleute at Diisseldorf in December, 1912. While American and German conditions are not entirely identical, it may be of interest to give here the words of the gentleman summing up the discussion at the Diisseldorf meeting: ' The chief advantage offered by the use of briquettes lies in the fact that disturbances in the furnace, caused mostly by the presence of fine ores in the burden, are avoided, and that blast pressure can be considerably reduced. The resulting economies cannot be overrated, as, with lower blast consumption per ton of product, the installation will be able to take care of increased production. In consequence of lower pressure and speed of blast, heat is more efficiently utilized, flue gas temperature is lowered, and coke particles are less liable to be carried along with the flue dust, of which considerably less is produced. Finally, by increased regularity of operation and higher . temperature in the lower parts of the furnace, the quality of the product is improved. The question of briquetting iron ores has grown to be one of the most important in the iron industry, and, it is not any more a question of what is the cost of briquetting ton of ore, but what, in using ore briquettes, is the cost of production of a ton of iron.'

Mechanical properties of columbium have been studied over the temperature range of -196 to 1093oC. The decreased strengthening influence of cold-work at temperatures below ambient has been interpreted in terms of the Peierls-Nabarro effect. Maxima in the rate of strain hardening observed during tensile testing in the range 250-600°C. have been correlated with interstitial impurities to indicate the temperature ranges at which carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, respectively, are responsible for strain aging. THE growing need for structural materials for use above the useful service temperatures of the iron-, nickel-, or cobalt-base alloys has caused the refractory metals to be considered as potential engineering materials. These metals, which include columbium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten, are called refractory because the lowest melting point among them,that of columbium, is about 1000°C higher than the average melting temperatures of conventional high-temperature alloys. They are all body-centered cubic transition metals and, as such, their mechanical properties have basic characteristics which distinguish them from the face-centered cubic metals. For example, all show a much steeper rise in strength with decreasing temperature below room temperature than do the face-centered cubic metals, and their mechanical properties are strongly influenced by interstitially dissolved impurities. In order that these new metals may be used efficiently, it is necessary that their characteristics of behavior be fully known. In this paper, the mechanical properties of columbium will be examined over a wide range of temperatures. In particular, the influences of cold-work and individual species of interstitial impurity atoms on mechanical properties will be described, and basic mechanisms which may control the observed characteristics will be explored. EXPERIMENTAL The material used in this investigation was Union Carbide Metals Co. columbium roundels consolidated to four 4-in. diam ingots, three by consumable-electrode arc melting and one ingot by electron beam melting. Impurity contents of the ingots and methods of ingot conversion and treatment are summarized in Table I. The only metallic impurity occurring in any significant quantity was tantalum at about 0.1 pct. Iron, silicon, titanium, and zirconium were each less than 0.015 pct; boron was 1 ppm or less. This should have no appreciable influence on properties. The electron beam melted material, being the purest, will be used as the basis for comparison in the discussions to follow. Tensile tests were conducted from-196 to 1093oC, on both cold-worked and fully recrystallized arc-melted and electron-beam melted columbium using standard 1/4-in. diam, 1-in. long gage length test specimens. A strain-rate of 0.005 in. per in. per min was employed until the 0.2 pct yield strength was achieved and then the strain-rate was increased to 0.05 in. per in. per min for the balance of the test. Samples were protected in an inert atmosphere at tests above 300°C. The tensile properties obtained on the electron-beam melted columbium, E, in both the cold-swaged and recrystallized conditions are given in Fig. 1. The yield strength data of Dyson, et al.,' obtained on recrystallized electron beam melted columbium and the tensile strength data reported by Tottle2 on powder metallurgy columbium are included in Fig. 1. The material used by Tottle had been purified by vacuum sintering. There is excellent agreement between Dyson's data and those obtained in the present investigation. The tensile strengths obtained by Tottle were slightly greater than those obtained in this investigation on electron-beam melted columbium but varied with temperature in a similar manner. Tottle's data showed a maximum in tensile strength near 500°C, as did our data on electron-beam melted material, and also showed a small maximum at 300°C. The significance of these maxima will become evident later in the discussion. The tensile properties of cold-swaged and recrys-tallized arc melted columbium are plotted in Fig. 2. It was found that the properties of the recrystallized arc-melted columbium from all three heats showed very close agreement except at temperatures between about 500" and 800°C. A reason for this range of disagreement will be suggested in the discussion. The generally good agreement, however, attests to the ability of cold-working and subsequent recrystal-lization to erase the effects of the three different primary breakdown procedures and to produce nearly equivalent structures in the samples derived from the three different heats. wesse13 reported tensile data on columbium having interstitial impurity contents between those of the

GRAVITATIONAL measurements made by means of the Eötvös torsion balance over any area enable a representation to be obtained of the total gravitational effects over the surface of that area arising from the combination of all sources of gravitational disturbance. The investigation of gravitational anomalies occurring in the upper layers of the earth's crust, in this way, has been attended with considerable success, and, especially in areas in which no undesirable disturbing factors were present, it has been possible to locate geological structures and mineral deposits with remarkable accuracy and also to delineate their confines and to indicate their depth below the surface with a certain amount of precision. Before this can be done successfully, however, it is necessary to determine the gravitational effect arising from all other extraneous .anomalies in order that these may be satisfactorily eliminated. Disturbing features giving rise to these gravitational anomalies may be divided into two classes, according to whether they are situated at or below the surface. The former are determined readily by a detailed leveling of the ground surface, and may be satisfactorily eliminated provided the specific gravity of the terrain material is known, but the latter are generally unknown, and can only be ascertained with difficulty. When, therefore, the observations obtained by means of the Eötvös torsion balance have been corrected for all surface irregularities, known as terrain and topographical effects, there remain residual gravitational values which are due entirely to subterranean conditions. The task of interpreting these results consists in disentangling the various subsurface anomalies, and subsequently in computing and recombining the effects of these various masses in order to verify the interpretation. When the gravitational anomalies are due to large and comparatively simple structures it is a matter of little difficulty to arrive at a satisfactory interpretation of the subterranean conditions, but in more complex areas, where the geological conditions are more complicated and several irregular features exist, the process of disentangling the various constituents of the complex mass arrangement is more difficult and requires the expenditure of considerable time and labor.

THE importance of the pressing operation in the forming of articles by powder metallurgy depends to a great extent on the type of product to be made. While in some few cases the pressing is merely a means of compacting loose powder particles into a solid mass preliminary to a sintering treatment in most applications it constitutes a molding operation with the purpose of shaping the raw material in powder form into a certain predetermined, accurately defined part not altered in shape by sub- sequent sintering. In still other cases, no pressing at all but sintering in molds gives useful articles. A limited number of products are made by the simultaneous application of pressure and heat. The factors that control the product of the pressing operation are raw material, lubricant, type, size and shape of die and compact, magnitude and time of application of pressure, as well as temperature of pressing. All such factors need to be con- trolled; yet, depending on the function of the pressing operation, greater emphasis may be placed on processing factors other than the pressing operation. In any complete discussion of pressing, subsequent sintering cannot be disregarded. For the sake of brevity, the present paper has been limited to the mechanics of pressing and only occasionally refers to sintering. For the same reason, hot-pressing has been omitted as beyond the scope of this paper. In any survey of the literature on the pressing of metal powders, the 1938 paper of Balshin1 on the theory of the process of pressing deserves mention. The first attempts at an interpretation of pressing phenomena were made by Balshin1 and Rakovski.2 The experimental results of both are of great interest. Since the experimental results are not described, the work was repeated, using our own interpretation of the possible techniques, and is reported in the following pages. The basic theory of Balshin,1 based on a hydro- dynamic analogy, however, leads to but another way of plotting density and pres- sure against height of a pressed compact. Since it does not give any new insight into the phenomena, nor account for the influence of side-wall friction, a discussion of the theory has been omitted from this paper. DENSITY GRADIENTS IN COMPACTS The process of pressing metal powders in a die (disregarding for this consideration the powder filling and ejection operations) may be divided into three phases: (I) packing, (2) elastic and plastic deformation, (3) cold-working with or without fragmentation. I FEEL a certain sense of responsibility in bringing before you the subject of the direct process in iron manufacture. I am aware that, in such a body as I have now the honor of addressing, there are few who are not already so well informed upon its past history that it would be a weariness to them to listen to anything else than an account of practical success. Yet, to claim that success involves so much that, if I do not make good my claim, I deservedly expose myself to severe criticism. The whole literature of the art, so far as it relates to the direct process, is, up to this time, but a history of failure. It is safe to say that more money, time, and talent have been fruitlessly spent in the pursuit of this object than in all the other unsuccessful efforts in the whole line of iron metallurgy. A distinguished authority in patent law has remarked that " the invention records of the United States and of foreign countries are filled with the waifs and abandoned relics of these abortive struggles." Dr. Percy, whose great work may be taken as an epitome of all that was worth mention, whether useful or curious, in pig-iron metallurgy, up to the date of its publication (1864), after giving elaborate accounts of various attempts at the direct process, condenses his own opinion of all that had been then effected, into a brief but summary comment upon a pamphlet of one of the sanguine inventors who had said: "It is evident that the present mode of working iron

This paper presents some preliminary results of two-dimensional cutting tests of dry limestone samples at utmospheric pressure. Cutting tips having rake angles of + 30°, + 15", 0°, - 15" and - 30" were used to make cuts on Leuders limestone samples at six depths of cut ranging from .005 to ,060 in. at cutting speeds of 15, 50, 109 and 150 ft/min. The vertical and horizontal force components on the cutting tips were recorded with an oscilloscope equipped with a polaroid camera. Motion pictures of the cutting process at camera speeds of 5,000 to 8,000 frames/sec were taken at strategic points in the variable ranges. The movies provide considerable insight into the brittle failure mechanism in rocks. It appears that chip-generating cracks usually have an initial orientation which is related to the resultant of the externally applied forces. The latter part of the crack curves upward toward the free surface being cut, this part being governed by some type of cantilever bending or prying. The linear and angular motion of the loosened chips also indicate the tensile nature of brittle failure. Analyses of the forces on the cutting tips indicate that: (I) relatively small increases in vertical loading result in large cut-depth increases for sharp tips (rake angles 2 0"); (2) tool forces increase at an increasing rate as the rake angle decreases, particularly for rake angles < 0"; and (3), for the range of this study, rate of loading had little effect on the maximum forces. Both the movies and visual inspection of the cuttings indicated that the volume of rock removed by chipping was much larger than that by any grinding mechanism, even for tips having negative rake angles. Cutting size increases with increased cut depth and rake angles, and decreases slightly at high cutting speeds, the depth of cut having by far the most influence. The amount of contact between the rock and the cutting tip was always less than the depth of cut and rarely exceeded 0.010 in. even for cuts of 0.060 in. INTRODUCTION The planing (or slicing) of various materials with a fixed blade has long been practiced by workers in many industries. For example, the farmer&apos;s plow, the carpenter&apos;s plane and the housewife&apos;s paring knife all employ this basic action. The casual observer might suspect that something so common must be quite simple; however, as in all problems involving the failure of materials, such is not the case. Industries concerned with the machining of metals have long studied these problems, and their literature on the subject is voluminous. Despite these efforts, basic knowledge is not very advanced, as may be noted from recent and comprehensive analyses of their literature.12 Metals are more subject to analysis by classical theories of elasticity and/or plasticity than are rocks, since their elastic constants and strengths are reasonably well established in many cases. In spite of this relative "simplicity", Hill9 refaces his discussion with an admission that the mathematical solution to the machining problem is not known. Photoelastic studies of both machining and milling have been performed and are discussed thoroughly by Coker and Filon.4 Rotary drilling of rocks with fixed blade or drag bits has long been practiced by the mining and petroleum industries, and considerable study has been given to defining their cutting action in terms of the pertinent variables. Essentially all the published mechanistic research on drag-bit drilling has been performed by mining engineers and has been concerned only with rocks in the brittle state. Fairhurst5-7 has worked extensively in this area and employed photographic techniques quite similar to those reported here, except at much lower speeds. His studies showed the periodic or cyclical nature of the brittle failure mechanism, in which instantaneous loads on the bit varied from some maximum value to near zero. Goodrichs has presented further data on the subject as well as a qualitative description of the process. Again the postulated mechanism is cyclical, with alternate chipping and grinding periods. The ploughing of coal is a practiced method and has been studied in some detail by English mining engineers."" Their findings have considerable general application to drag-bit drilling. Evans," in particular, has extended Merchant&apos;s metal-cutting theory" to brittle materials with some success, although certain aspects of his theory are open to question. In reviewing available vacuum filtration equipment in this paper, several types of filters have been included which are probably not familiar to operators in the mining industry. However, it was felt that these units might be of interest in the event that an application should arise for the filtration of a product in the future that does not exist today. In addition, exposure of our industry to equipment used in other industries might have a tendency to be thought provoking and perhaps lead to the development of equipment and/or applications in our industry which do not necessarily exist at this time. Most innovations in filtration equipment have been confined to the improvement or design change of components and accessories, particularly reflecting the availability of materials of construction that have been developed. Recent developments in the application of horizontal belt filters have been innovative. The application of this unit as a substitute for or an adjunct to thickeners in a CCD circuit can certainly be innovative and perhaps provide a basis for reduction in capital and operating costs in this area. For example, mill tails are generally pumped at the highest possible density that will adequately flow. Tailings ponds and dams with their attendant design requirements are based upon this estimated water volume. Availability of a much dryer, non-flowing filter cake opens up several new options for disposal. Considerable cost savings could result in the design and planning of disposal areas for containing dryer material. No attempt has been made in this paper to provide a manual for the operation of all of the many types of equipment that are available. Rather, the paper tries to present an overview. Fundamentals of Vacuum Filtration Filtration may be defined as the separation of solids from a liquid effected by passing the liquids through a porous medium. If the filtrate is induced to flow through the medium by hydrostatic head, we refer to it as gravity filtration. If we utilize super-atmospheric pressure upstream of the medium we call it pressure filtration and if sub-atmospheric pressure is applied downstream of the medium we call it vacuum filtration. Centrifugal filtration occurs when a centrifugal force is applied across the medium. Centrifuges will not be discussed in this paper. (Continuing the discussion of the paper of James Johnston, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 85, January, 1914, pp. 107 to 133.) This paper cannot fail of being of great interest and value to all who are interested in the cyanide process, on account of the important developments which it records. Mr. Johnston is to be commended for the large amount of detail which he gives, and the company and its management for permitting the publication of data of this character, which while of great value to others could well be considered private property. It might be discussed from a number of standpoints: First, as an example of recent practice in mill and cyanide plant construction; second, the mill practice; third, the cyanide practice; and fourth, the new features in cyanide treatment involved. Perhaps a more vivid way of expressing it would be : First, the equipment or tools with which the various operations are carried on, are they the best and most efficient which could have been selected for their respective uses; and, second, is the best use in every case made of these tools? It may be well inquired is the highest possible recovery of silver made at the lowest cost per ounce recovered? For after all, the making of the greatest ultimate profit is inseparably associated with successful metallurgical practice; there must therefore be at all times a careful balance maintained between recovery and cost of obtaining it. I wish to call attention in a very general way to the equipment used and to an anticipation of questions which are bound to arise in this connection. However, the. bulk of my discussion will be confined to the presentation of certain additional data, together with a more or less general discussion showing the line of development which leads up to the present practice and .the applicability of certain features of it to similar problems elsewhere. There are a number of vital points of broad general interest involved in Nipissing low-grade practice upon which metallurgists will by no means be agreed to which I wish to call particular attention in the hope that it will lead to the presentation of data y others of practice in other districts which will&apos; assist in reconciling this divergence of opinion.

Extra-low carbon iron sheet, when deformed and annealed, undergoes exaggerated or abnormal grain growth in the critically deformed regions of the sheet. This exaggerated pmth occurs, for low strains (3 to 6 pct), only in sheet which has a fine dispersion of precipitates in the subsurface region of the sheet and fewer and coarser precipitates in the sheet interior. These particles have been identified as manganese sulfides. Wing the anneal, grains near the surface are gvowth-inhibited by the fine particles but the grains in the interior are free to grow normally. With the additional driving force provided by the strain energy, the interior grains first grow into the small subsurface pains. Eventually, these growing grains grow completely through the sheet. Calculations of limiting grain sizes at various values of strain indicate that a volume fraction of precipitates in excess of 10-&apos; would be required to eliminate exaggerated growth in material strained to 10 pct. OPEN-COIL annealing has made decarburization of sheet steel both efficient and economically practical. Use of such material for porcelain-enameling stock is one of many possible applications of low-carbon iron since carbon in steel is deleterious to porcelain-enameling properties.&apos; However, the extra-low carbon iron presently available presents another problem, that of exaggerated grain growth in regions where the sheet has been deformed as by bending or stretching. In exaggerated grain growth a few grains start to absorb their neighbors and these may become very much larger than the average grains of the sheet. Other names for exaggerated grain growth are coarsening, critical grain growth, secondary recrystallization, abnormal grain growth, or discontinuous grain growth. While this grain growth does not affect the enameling qualities of the low-carbon iron sheet, their presence results in a marked reduction of tensile-yield strength in the region of the sheet containing the large grains. The loss of tensile yield strength may render the material unsuitable for many applications . This report describes the results of a study undertaken to determine the cause of the exaggerated grab growth in extra-1ow carbon iron and, if possi- ble, to prescribe practical procedures for its prevention. GENERAL THEORY The driving force for exaggerated grain growth is the grain boundary free energy. This driving force is proportional to (l/rl + l/r2) where rl and r2 are the mutually perpendicular radii of curvature of the boundary between the growing grain and the grain being consumed. Thus, the greater the difference in size between the growing grain and the matrix grains, the higher the driving force for grain growth. If, however, the matrix grains are free to grow simultaneously, the driving force for exaggerated growth will be diminished. Stability toward growth of the matrix grains may be caused by a) a strong single orientation texture (texture inhibition),&apos; b) a dispersed second phase,3"5 c) the thickness effect,&apos; or d) intergranular segregation.7"9 As exaggerated growth occurs when growth of the matrix grains has been slowed by the stabilizing processes mentioned above, there must be an additional factor acting to promote growth of a few of the grains to the point where they are enough larger than the matrix grains that boundary energy driving forces are sufficient to cause continued growth. For instance, at the annealing temperature, growth-inhibiting inclusions may slowly dissolve and coalesce. Eventually, a grain boundary becomes unlocked and migration occurs at the expense of neighboring grains. Or, an additional driving force may be supplied to some of the grains if the material is strained. Then, since some grains will be strained less than others, the difference in strain energy between adjacent grains may be sufficient to overcome boundary locking and allow growth of the grains with lower strain energies. In the present study, therefore, such factors as the presence or absence of dispersed phases, the nature of the exaggerated growth, and the effect of strain have been considered. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE I) Material and Processing. For alloys which are in practice heat treated to obtain increased strength, such as steels, duralumin, copper-beryllium, and others, the treatment usually involves heating to a relatively high temperature. At such temperatures the grain size of the product is largely determined by grain growth. Even in metals and alloys annealed merely to relieve work hardening, recrystal-lization is generally followed by a certain amount of grain growth. Thus, effective grain size control, which is often of great practical importance in manufacturing processes, depends on the grain growth behavior of the material used. Despite its importance, grain growth has been the subject of few investigations of a fundamental nature. The term "grain growth" has been used to designate a group of related, but distinctly different, phenomena. The two most important and best known of this group are illustrated by the following example. Curve a in Fig I shows the increase of the average grain size of a copper-beryllium alloy, containing 2 pct Be and 0.15 pct Co, with increasing annealing temperature. The time of annealing was 2 hr. The grain size was quite uniform in all specimens. The results of a similar experiment with an alloy containing 2 pct Be and 0.31 pct Co are shown by curve b It is seen that for any annealing temperature below T, the grain size was smaller than. in the previous case. Grain growth became slower with the higher Co content. This "inhibiting" effect of the higher Co addition was associated with the appearance in the microstructure of fine, light blue particles of the CoBe phase. Up to temperature T, the structure of the inhibited alloy (curve b) was just as uniform as the structures represented by curve a. However, after annealing at T or at higher temperatures, the inhibited alloy showed some extremely large grains (much larger than the grain sizes developed by the uninhibited alloy with low Co content) mixed with the small grains according to curve b. The presence of these mixed or "duplex" structures is indicated in Fig I by the vertical lines branching off curve b. The type of grain growth occurring in uninhibited Cu-Be alloys (curve a) has been most frequently and best investigated in brass. This type has been designated as "normal grain growth,&apos;&apos; while the grain growth phenomena occurring in inhibited materials were, at times, referred to as "abnormal grain growth." However, since the latter term has been applied occasionally to the phenomenon of critical recrystallization, which also results in large grains although by an entirely different mechanism, in the present paper a different nomenclature has been adopted in order to avoid confusion. The mine and milling plant of Demonstration Gold Mines, Ltd., is near the city limits of Baguio, Mt. Province, P. I. The mine road connects with the main highway to Manila. The nearest railway point is near sea level, approximately 40 miles distant. The Baguio district is very mountainous and has one of the heaviest rainfalls in the world. It is therefore difficult to maintain roads or to impound tailings and mine dumps. All supplies are trucked into the district direct from Manila or the nearest railway point, which means uncertain deliveries and high freight rates. Installation of equipment is difficult and costly. The average elevation at the mine is 4000 ft. and the climatic conditions are ideal except for a three months rainy season. The company generates its own power for mining and milling operations with three 400-hp. Ruston Diesel engines direct connected to 250-kw. General Electric alternating current generators. Labor conditions have been excellent, although at present social security laws are causing some unrest. Labor receives a higher average wage rate in this district than other labor in the Islands. The company also furnishes free living quarters, hospitalization and workmen&apos;s compensation. Taxation has been reasonable up to the present time, but some of the new mining legislation may make it difficult to operate and pay dividends. The future depends largely upon the continuation of $35 gold and the political outcome in the Islands. History The Demonstration ore body was worked by the Igorots for many years, as evidenced by old stopes and fill encountered in present operations. Attention of Americans was first attracted soon after the Spanish-American war. During the building of the Benguet road to Baguio, the engineers and foreman became interested in the geology of the district.

History ILLINOIS has so recently attained the third place in the oil production of the United States that few realize its great importance, or are aware of its highly profitable character. Since 1907 Illinois has furnished about 15 per cent. of the United States output and about 10 per cent. of the world&apos;s production. The value of the output in 1913 is estimated at $30,000,000, of which about $20,000,000 is profit. The present prosperity dates from 1905, but efforts have been made since 1865 to develop production and geologists have been very sanguine as to its future for over 25 years. Had the oil operators been as confident as the geologists, the field would have been opened at least 30 years earlier. THE copper-bearing ores concentrated at the Anaconda plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. are principally a mixture of copper and iron sulfides associated in a gangue consisting of quartz, lightly altered granite and feldspars, with sphalerite and galena and more rarely barite and hubnerite as accessory minerals. The predominant sulfide is pyrite. The copper minerals present are: chalcocite, bornite (Erubescite), enargite, chalcopyrite, covellite, tetrahedrite and some tennantite. Normal concentrator practice removes a slime prior to ball-mill grinding. The deslimed ore is ground to approximately 10 per cent plus 65 mesh for flotation. Two selective flotation circuits are used, one for deslimed ore and one for slime. The metallurgical results obtained are shown in Table 1.

THE degree to which our mineral requirements are being met by mining leaner, more complex or more remote deposits is indicated by developments during 1953. Heavy capital investment, skilled technical advice, planning, and able execution are requirements for the typical venture. Producers, faced with rising costs and with softer prices, are seeking improved mining and recovery. Developments in production of iron ore are typical of the course being followed in metal and nonmetal mining. Iron ore development in the U. S. is concentrated on the spectacular work with Lake Superior taconite, while in Canada new production is expected from Labrador and output from Steep Rock, Algoma, and Newfoundland is being increased. Shipment of iron will soon be made from Venezuela.
