AT Kellogg, Idaho, J. Fred Johnson is driving the 5000.-ft Hooper Tunnel under contract for the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining Co. This was visited by a group of engineers during the recent meeting of the A. I. M. E. at Spokane, who were impressed with several features of the work. An excellent record of advance is being made by the contractor, over 47 ft. being driven in 3 days during October, and 223 ft. advanced in 29 shifts. The size of the tunnel is 8 by 9 ft. The ground is Wallace quartzite and, save for the first hundred feet, stands well and does not require timbering. The grade is held uniformly at 0.5 per cent. Two shifts are employed, with two sets of machine men to the shift. Ingersoll-Rand S-70 drills are used. each machine being set up independently in the heading; 26-30 holes are drilled to the round; using 1 1/4: in. round hollow drill steel. A 7-hole cut is required, and these holes are blasted simultaneously, using 60 per cent gelatine, 12 sticks to the hole. Instantaneous and fire delays of electric detonators are used for the complete round. A feature of the drilling is the use of long carriage drills, necessitating fewer changes of steel, and more time spent on drilling, with less time consumed taking steel back and forth from the face. Of course, this means better blacksmithing so that the drill steel shall stand up for the added footage.

THE North Lily Mine started its career in an unusual way it was discovered by a geologist. The remarkable circumstance of driving a 2400-ft. drift into an unexplored country and "hitting her on the nose," indicates that geologists are sometimes numbered among those whom the Lord loves. Diamond- drilling from surface had previously shown the presence and position of the Ophir beds, and surface showings of pebble-dykes, faults, and bleached rhyolite indicated conditions similar to those at the Tintic Standard "Pot-hole." The discovery drift from the Tintic Stand- ard 700-level reached the North Lily orebody in January, 1926, and development and stoping were continued by Tintic Standard men and equipment until the North Lily shaft was sunk and put into service in May, 1928. The discovery drift was run on a cooperative basis by the Tintic Standard and North Lily mining com- panies. Finding the North Lily mine cost the North Lily company $26,000. The Tintic Standard Mining Co. furnished men and equipment to drive this discovery drift at a fraction of what it would have cost to find the orebody from surface. This was the beginning of the friendly cooperation that still exists. Through Tintic Standard ground the Tintic Standard paid two- thirds of the cost and the North Lily one-third; the cost of the drift through Eureka Lily, into North Lily ground, was paid by North Lily. Later, another drift from the Tintic Standard 900-level was run on the same plan, excepting that Eureka Lily paid its share of the cost; that is, the Eureka Lily paid one-third of the expense in Tintic Standard ground, and the Eureka Lily two-thirds and North Lily one-third in Eureka Lily ground. This 900-drift was driven by North Lily from the Eureka Lily line to near the North Lily west side-line. From this point the Chief Consolidated continued the drift well into Tintic Bullion ground.

The Institute has established this lectureship to honor the memory of a great American metallurgist, one whose fame has continued long after his passing. As one scientist recently stated it, "All metallurgical texts gradually become outdated and outmoded, except those of the great Henry Marion Howe." It seems fitting, then, that, once every year, we shouId review, in his honor, some aspects of the science in which he was such a distinguished leader, and also discuss any new data that may help to clarify our concepts. It is my privilege, for which indeed I express the deepest appreciation to this Institute, to offer for consideration a few thoughts on the toughness and fracture of hardened steels. Before proceeding to the data, I wish to express my great indebtedness to many associates whose stimulating discussions, generous contributions of data and cooperation in experiments are gratefully acknowledged. (But I wish to absolve them of any blame that may arise from the way in which their discussions and data have been used!) First, Dr. Edgar C. DREAMS do come true at times, although it is evidently better to believe in engineers than to "believe in fairies" if most dreams are to be translated into fact. It was a fine dream that David H. Moffat had when he projected a railway directly west from Denver; a dream of opening a new empire in northwestern Colorado, and of quickening transportation from the Middle West to the Pacific slope. But Moffat had been a miner and had become a banker. He knew that dreams, untranslated into works, benefit no one and pleasure only the dreamer, so he employed an engineer, H. A. Sumner, to study and plan the route to be followed by the rails. Previous main lines had run to the north, the Union Pacific, or the south, the Santa Fe. The Denver and Rio Grande, it is true, wriggled its way bravely across Colorado but, in order to reach a point 74 miles in an airline west of- Denver, travelled 281 miles following two canyons and crossing Tennessee Pass at 10,240 ft. Valuable as such a road is, it could never accomplish what Moffat had in mind. It was known that no low pass could be found directly west of Denver but up to 9000 ft. the topog-

This paper is a review of Montana reverberatory smelting practice covering a period of approximately fifty years, during which time the small furnaces that had been in use elsewhere for a century or more, without much change in size or method of operation, were revolutionized and were developed into the huge, continuously operating furnaces of today. A study of Montana practice is particularly instructive, since reverberatory furnace smelting for the production of copper matte received more attention there than in other smelting centers and many of the improvements that finally resulted in establishing the preeminence of this type of furnace over the blast furnace originated in Butte and Anaconda. The material in this paper was gathered from original sources, wherever possible, and all of the illustrations were made from original drawings, some of which have been simplified and worked over so as to be better adapted for reproduction. The aim has been to trace the modifications in design and operation which took place during the period in question—the reasons for the changes and the results achieved through them. For developments during the first twenty years, the technical literature of the period was freely drawn upon, but I am particularly indebted to W. M. Kelly, general foreman at the Anaconda Works, whose recollections and personal experience extend back to the early days. I wish to acknowledge the use made of publications of E. P. Mathewson, William Wraith and L. V. Bender, as well as information obtained here and there from friends and associates. The resume of Great Falls practice was compiled from correspondence, notes and drawings found in the files of the old Boston & Montana Co. and the tabulations showing the performance of furnaces at Butte and Anaconda are adapted from plant records and correspondence in the files of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. The paper deals with some interesting comparisons that were made between furnaces operated under various conditions in connection with the Carson Case, and results obtained when using natural gas as fuel. This part of the paper may be considered original to the extent that these results have not previously been published.

An analysis of the semiconductor injection laser is presented which is based on a phenomenological model using device and material parameters. The intent of the laser threshold analysis is not to predict from theory the actual threshold current density but rather to provide a logical means of interpreting experimental results. The device and material parameters have been selected such that they describe both the threshold conditions and quantum efficiency of the lasev. A technique is proposed whereby the current required to obtain a population inversion is predicted from device 1-V characteristics. Experimental data are presented which support the analysis. THIS investigation is concerned with the characteristics of GaAs lasers fabricated in this laboratory. However, the assumptions used in these calculations should not limit their application to GaAs alone. It is felt that the analysis is sufficiently general to be useful in describing the operation of other semiconductor-laser materials. ANALYSIS heavily doped semiconductors to be considered. The absorption and/or generation of optical radiation may be completely specified in terms of q(E) and the probability functions f,,(E) and f,(E) which define the occupancy of the valence-band and conduction-band levels, respectively. The symbols used in this analysis are listed at the end. Following the approach of all' it can be shown that the effective gain coefficient, g, in the plane of a forward-biased P -N junction is g(E)=-ai@)[1-fv(E)-fc(E)] [1I In particular Eq. [I] holds for the photon energy at which lasing occurs, Ep. Throughout the following discussion Eq. [I] is considered only for the lasing transition E = Ep. For simplicity the functional energy dependence of the various factors is omitted in subsequent equations. Unless otherwise stated the symbols used represent the values at Ep. If the analysis is limited to the P-type side of the laser junction, the function q(l -f,,) is recognized as the band-to-band absorption in the P-type material at thermal equilibrium. Under forward-bias conditions the function f, is determined by the electron quasi Fermi level in P-type material. For sufficiently large forward bias the second term in Eq. [3] will become dominant and net gain will result; i.e., g will become positive. In order to simplify the subsequent analysis several assumptions are in order at this point. a) No conductivity modulation occurs. /„ is independent of f, and therefore go is a constant. b) The P-type material is heavily doped such that the degeneracy of the valence band permits popu-

l. INTRODUCTION. IN casting a thermal balance of the heat generated and absorbed in a blast-furnace treating lead-, copper- and similar non-ferrous ores, assumptions have always to be made for the values of the heat of formation of slag. ? Considering that the larger part of the charge introduced into the furnace comes out in the form of slag, the significance becomes apparent of a lack of heat-values for the singulo-silicate, which is the type of slags commonly made. The aim of the present investigation is to supply these heat-values as far as possible with the apparatus and the time available. The heats of formation of the ferrous and manganous bi-silicates have been determined by Le Chatelier; 1 those of some silicates other than iron and manganese by Tschernobaeff:2 finally Richards 3 gives a figure for a copper blast-furnace slag of known composition. The existing data and those resulting from the present investigation are assembled in Table VI. II. MATERIALS USED. The materials used in the experiments were silica, ferrous oxide, and calcium carbonate. Silica.-The silica sold in the market as chemically pure usually contains small amounts of magnesia, lime, and alumina, and is therefore not suited for the work. THE experiments of which the results and significance are set forth in this paper do not by any means cover the whole subject of the heat-treatment of the material referred to, yet they constitute a contribution to that general subject, rather than to the special department of annealing. The material here considered is acid open-hearth steel, containing from 0.50 to 0.80 per cent of carbon, with a nearly uniform percentage of other elements. This class of steel is rapidly increasing in commercial importance. It is even rumored that the rail-specifications of some railroads will hereafter require open-hearth steel. Yet this particular grade seems to have received less study and description from the standpoint of the metallographist than many others. The investigation here described was directed to the following points:-Steel containing about 0.50 per cent, of carbon : 1. The structure as related to the temperature, at the same rate of cooling; 3. The structure and physical properties as related to temperature at different rates of cooling; 3. The structure and physical properties as related to different finishing-temperatures and different rates of cooling; 4. The bearing of these observations upon the statement of Prof. Albert Sauveur.1

VARIOUS classes of coals are recognized in this country at the present time. These classes depend largely upon physical characteristics rather than upon chemical composition, and consequently they cannot be accurately defined. The divisions into anthracite, semi-anthracite and semi-bituminous are fairly satisfactory; but the term bituminous embraces so large a variety of coal that it is of little value, and the term lignite is so loosely applied that it has little or no place in a scientific classification. At present there is no way of accurately defining the vari¬ous classes of coal, because no adequate scheme of classification, which applies to lignites as well as bituminous coal and anthracite bas been proposed. The object of this paper is to present such a scheme, which is based upon data obtained dur¬ing the past year by Prof. N. W. Lord,1 in charge of the chemical laboratory of the United States Geological Survey coal-testing plant at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis. All the classifications of coals proposed prior to 1877 were based either on physical characteristics or on proximate analyses, including all of the impurities. These schemes were illogical and highly unsatisfactory, for the physical properties of a coal give little indication of its true composition; and impurities, such as ash and sulphur, are largely the results of acci-

ANTHRACOAL is a mixture of small particles of anthracite coal and a matrix of practically pure carbon, formed from the distillation of coal-tar pitch or other suitable bitumen. It is a hard, dense, homogeneous mass, with a silvery luster and in color varies from silvery to grayish black. When pushed from the oven, it develops only partly the fingerlike structure of coke; but, unlike coke, it has a tendency to remain in blocky masses. When struck with a hammer or passed through crushing rolls, it breaks with an irregular fracture, similar to anthracite, but with very little fines. Due to its density, anthracoal is harder, tougher, and stronger than coke. The results of a test made by the blast-furnace department, of the Bethlehem Steel Co., on two barrels of anthracoal are given in Table 1. Equilibrium data on the reactions of gases with carbon and oxygen dissolved in liquid iron are reviewed and correlated. A source of error in oxygen analysis of graphitic samples is exposed. New experimental data on the oxygen content of high -carbon iron in equilibrium with carbon monoxide indicate that the activity coefficient of oxygen is decreased by additions of carbon. The carbon-oxygen product decreases slightly with increasing carbon content. In recent years a number of investigations have been reported dealing with the equilibria between carbon and oxygen in liquid iron and gases containing carbon oxides. The laboratory study of these reactions dates back to 1931 with the publication of a paper by Vacher and Hamilton' on "The Carbon-Oxygen Equilibrium in Liquid Iron". The principal object of this study was to obtain data on the reaction shown by Eq. [3] below; their data and others by vacherZ permit evaluation of the other equilibrium constants as well. Subsequent studies have been reported by Matoba, Phragmen and Kalling and by Marshall and Chipman.5 The equilibria may be expressed by the following three equations: C + CO,= 2CO;Kl = Pc° [1] 0-+CO = CO,;K2=-P co, "0.PCO c + O = CO; K3 = In the equilibrium constants, ac and a0 are taken as equal to [% C] and [% 0] respectively in the infinitely dilute solution. At finite concentrations an activity coefficient is introduced such that ac =fc [%C], and so forth. It is to be noted that these equations represent only two independent relations, the third being derivable from any two. Richardson and Dennis have determined the conditions of equilibrium in reaction [I] at temperatures of 1560" to 1760°C. Their results have been confirmed by Rist and chipman7 who have shown how the data may be extended to cover the entire range of liquid compositions at temperatures from the eutectic up to 1760°C. An approximate confirmation has been reported by Fuwa and chipman.' These investigations also established the activity coefficient of carbon which was shown to increase rather rapidly with increasing concentration. For the very dilute solutions the value of Kl is expressed in the equation: log^i = - 7280/T+ 6.65 This equation leads to a value of Kl = 430 at 1540° C in excellent agreement with the average value of Marshall and Chipman.5 It is shown as line 1 in Fig. 1 together with the experimental observations. In the case of reaction [2] the direct experimental results can be supplemented by observations on the corresponding reaction with hydrogen, namely reaction [4]:

THE iron-silicon alloy series has always been one of the most puzzling among the binary alloys. Examining the well known mechanical properties of the iron-rich alloys only we meet the following situation: The ultimate strength and yield point of alloys worked and annealed under the usual conditions represent nearly a straight line function of the silicon content up to 4.5 per cent. silicon (Fig. 1). Starting at the ultimate strength of 35,000 lb. and at a yield-point of 16,000 lb. for pure electrolytic iron, one reaches a -maximum strength of 93,000 lb. and a maximum yield point of 74,000 lb. at 4.5 per cent. silicon. This corresponds to an increase in ultimate strength by 13,000 lb. per each per cent. of silicon added and nearly the same rate applies to the yield point. The data mentioned are taken from the investigation by T. D. Yensen,1 and while they do not exactly corroborate the results obtained by earlier investigators, they seem to be the most correct. Plastic properties of the alloys are controlled by a much more complicated relationship. Up to 2.5 per cent. Si, the elongation stays close to 50 per cent. (in 2 in.) and the area reduction amounts to 85 per cent., a situation that forms the usual feature of all alloys representing strictly solid solutions. The plasticity of the latter is always nearly equal to that of their base metal. Beyond 2.5 per cent. silicon, the situation becomes much more complicated Yensen observed an enormous drop in elongation and area reduction at about 2.65 per. cent. silicon, where the first hardly reaches 10 per cent. and the second is still lower; he found, however, a considerable recovery in plasticity at about 2.8 per cent. Si and up to. 4.5 per cent. Si it is represented by 20 per cent. for the elongation and 30 per cent. for area reduction.

INTRODUCTION The Northern Great Plains Coal Province which occupies approximately 36.6 ha contains about one-half of the nation's total coal resources. About one million ha are underlain by coal that is considered to be mineable from the surface. The topography of the province is predominately plains, rolling hills, and some badland areas characterized by breaks or sharply eroded hills. Elevations range from about 1500 m above sea level on the west to about 600 m above sea level on the eastern boundary. The average slope of the ground is approximately 2 m per km. Streams in the province drain generally easterly and southeasterly (1). In the United States, the Northern Great Plains Province lies within the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado. The coal within the province is located almost entirely in the states of North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. Although it is relatively low rank, the coal within the province encompasses a large portion of the total remaining U. S. reserves. The U. S. Geological Survey estimates the total remaining coal resources of the United States to be 2.6 trillion mt within 1000 m of the surface, and 2.9 trillion tons within 1830 m of the surface. Of this total, only about 177 billion mt are classified as reserves meaning that they are (1) known in location, quantity and quality from geologic evidence supported by engineering measurements, and (2) economically recoverable based on currently available technologies and current market value (2).
