Pressure-temperature-composition data were obtainedfor the Er-H system. Measurements werecar-ried out in the temperature range of 473° to 1223°K, the composition range of erbium to ErH,, and the pressure range of 10-5 to 760 Torr. Solubility relationships were established from these data throughout the system. Three solid-solution phases were delineated: metal solid solution, dihydride phase, and trihydride phase. The trihydride Phase decomposes at about 656°K and 1 atm pressure. The dihydride phase is stable to about 1023°K, but becomes more deficient in hydrogen above this temperature. The equilibrium decomposition pressure-temperature relationships in the two-phase regions, erbium solid solution plus dihydride and dihydride plus trihydride, were deter- The differential heats of reaction in these two regions are AH = - 52.6 * 0.3 and - 19.8 i 0.2 kcal per mole of Hz, respectively. The differential entropies of reaction are AS = - 35.2 * 0.3 and - 30.1 * 0.4 cal per mole HZ.deg, respectively. Relative partial molal and integral thermodynamic quuntities were calculated in the system to the dihydride phase. RARE earth metal-hydrogen systems have been the subject of general survey,1"4 and all have been found to form hydride phases. The heavy rare earths, of which erbium is a member, form dihydride and trihydride phases with different crystal structures, whereas the light rare earths form only a single-phase dihydride which expands without structure change, as hydrogen is added, to the trihydride composition. These materials are of interest primarily because of their theoretical properties, such as bonding, defect structure, and thermodynamic and electronic characteristics. Erbium has been studied in several previous investigations.5, 6 It was deemed desirable to more thoroughly and accurately define the system, both for the phase equilibria and the thermodynamic properties. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Sieverts&apos; apparatus was employed to conduct the experimental measurements. Briefly, it consisted of a source of pure hydrogen, a precision gas-measuring buret, a heated reaction chamber, a mercury manometer, and two McLeod gages (a CVC, GM 100A and CVC, GM 110). Pure hydrogen was obtained by passing hydrogen through a heated Pd-Ag thimble. The hydrogen was analyzed and found to have only a trace of oxygen and nitrogen. A 100-ml precision gas buret graduated to 0.1-ml divisions was used to measure and admit hydrogen to the reaction chamber. The reaction unit consisted of a quartz tube surrounded by a nichrome-wound furnace. The furnace temperature was controlled by a recorder-controller to ±1°K. An independent measurement of the sample temperature in the quartz tube was made by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple situated outside, but adjacent to, the quartz tube near the specimen. Pressure in the manometer range was measured to ±0.5 Torr and in the McLeod range (10-4 to 10 Torr) to ±3 pct. The hydrogen compositions in erbium were calculated in terms of hydrogen-to-erbium atomic ratio. These compositions were estimated to be ±0.01 H/Er. The erbium metal was obtained from the Lunex Co. in the form of sponge. The metal was nuclear grade with a purity of 99.9 pct +. The oxygen content was reported to be 340 ppm and the nitrogen not detectable. Metallographically the structure was almost free of second phase (<1 vol pct). A quantity of sponge was arc-melted for use as charge material. The solid material was compared with the sponge in the pressure-temperature-composition relationships. They were found to be identical. Therefore, sponge material was used henceforth, so that equilibrium could be attained more rapidly. The specimen size was about 0.2 grain for each loading of the reaction chamber. The procedure employed to obtain the pressure-temperature-composition data was to develop experimentally a family of isothermal curves of composition vs pressure. First, a specimen of erbium was wrapped in a tungsten foil capsule to prevent contact with the quartz tube. After loading the specimen, the system was evacuated to less than l0-6 Torr, flushed several times with high-purity hydrogen, and evacuated again ready for the start of the experiment. The furnace was then brought to the desired temperature. A measured amount of hydrogen was admitted into the chamber. Equilibrium was allowed to be attained, the pressure read, and the process then repeated many times until 1 atm of gas pressure was finally reached. Other isotherms were then developed in the same manner. The partial pressure plateaus were determined by another manner. In the solid solution-dihydride region a composition of approximately 1.0 H/Er was selected on the plateau. The temperature was varied throughout the range of interest. At each temperature level, equilibrium was achieved, the pressure read, and the next temperature attained. The temperature was cycled both up and down. In the dihydride-trihy-dride region, the plateaus were determined in the 473" to 651°K range only by heating to the desired temperature and not by both heating and cooling. Equilibrium arsenic contents of Pb-As alloys in contact with PbO-As2O3 slags containing less than 30 mol pct As2O3, were determined at 650°, 700: and 750 C in an inert at?rzosphere. In this temperature range, the arsenic content of the alloy increased with increasing temperature in the single-phase liquid slag region and decreased with increasing temperature in the two-phase slag region and the single-phase solid-solution slag region. The PbO-As2O3 phase diagram below 22 mol pct As2O3 was determined by thertrzal analysis and by application of a log ?As2O3/?PbO vS log XAs2o3 /x3pbO plot determined from the equilibrium actiuity data. The resulting phase diagram was not well-defined since the eutectic temperature was not detected in the thermal analysis experiments, although a region of terminal solid solubility of As2O3 was found. Results from the phase diagram determination are compared with an existing diagram in the literature. THIS experimental investigation is an extension of a study by the authors1 on the slag-metal equilibria in the systems concerned with commercial lead refining processes such as softening and dross fuming. The first part of this investigation was a study of the slag-metal equilibria in the Pb-PbO-Sb2O3 system. The only experimental work previously done on the Pb-PbO-As2O3 system was by Pelzel2,3 in which the phase diagram for the PbO-As2O3 system was determined below 50 wt pct As2O3 and the equilibrium constant for the reaction 3Pb + As2O3 + 3PbO + 2As was determined as a function of temperature. No slag-metal equilibrium data have been determined. It is due to the scarcity of information regarding the Pb-PbO-As203 system that this work was undertaken. This paper describes the determination of the slag-metal equilibria in the Pb-PbO-As203 system by equilibrating Pb-As alloys with PbO-As2O3 slags in an inert atmosphere, the effect of 1 wt pct additions of bismuth and copper on the slag-metal equilibria, and the PbO-As2O3 phase diagram both by thermal analysis and the use of the slag-metal equilibria data. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The materials used in this investigation were analytical reagent-grade and assayed as follows: 1) 99.8 pct PbO (0.014 pct insoluble in CHJCOOH, 0.02 pct not precipitated by H2S, 0.1 pct CaO, and 0.08 pct SiO2); 2) 99.95 pct As2O3; 3) 99.99 pct Pb; 4) 99.0 pct As; 5) 99.99 pct Cu; and 6) 99.97 pct Bi. Room-temperature X-ray patterns revealed no detectable impurities in any of these materials. Apparatus for Equilibrium and Thermal-Analysis Determinations. The resistance-heated crucible furnace used in this investigation employed nichrome elements and was mounted so that it could be raised to surround the reaction tube during each experiment and, subsequently, lowered. A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Each charge was heated in a 3+-in.-OD by 31/2-in.-high 416 stainless-steel crucible placed in a 41/4-in.-1D by 18-in.-long fused-silica reaction tube which was closed at one end. On a shoulder around the crucible was placed a 3: -in.-OD by 12-in.-long open-end fused-silica condenser tube. The open end of the reaction tube was covered by a water-cooled brass cap with ports for 1) admitting an inert atmosphere to the system through a stopcock, 2) introducing a stainless-steel, motor-driven, paddle stirrer into the crucible, 3) evacuating the system with a mechanical vacuum pump, and 4) sampling the melt with Vycor sampling tubes. The brass cap was fitted to the open end of the reaction tube with a silicone gasket and collar clamp. The furnace temperature was controlled by a Barber-Coleman Capacitrol controller and a chromel-alumel thermocouple. Due to the corrosiveness of the melt, the controlling thermocouple also served as the measuring thermocouple. The temperature of the melt was calibrated against the controller temperature and was checked periodically during each test with a Vycor-enclosed calibrated chromel-alumel thermocouple. The temperature measurement and control can be considered accurate to ±3°C. Procedure. The charge placed in the crucible for each experiment consisted of 1000 g of Pb-As alloy and 300 g of PbO-As2O3 slag. The crucible was then placed in the reaction tube, the condenser tube was placed on the shoulder of the crucible, the silicone gasket and brass cap were fitted on the open end of the reaction tube, and the entire system was evacuated and filled with argon ten times. With on-stream electrical-resistance measurement as a basis, Bethlehem Steel developed a system for the completely automatic control of moisture in the feed to pelletizing. This system was later successfully adapted to the sintering process, with automatic control of moisture serving to maintain the air permeability required for effective burnthrough. Control of moisture content is an important factor in the agglomeration processes by which iron ores are converted into either pellets or sinter for use in blast furnace burdens. In both pelletizing and sintering the iron ore feed must be mixed with the proper amount of water so that capillary attraction and surface tension forces can be utilized to cause the ore particles to coalesce and form larger agglomerates. The success or failure of the entire pelletizing or sintering process depends on maintaining the proper moisture. Therefore, continuous automatic control of moisture is one of the conditions for the automation and optimum use of both pelletizing and sintering processes. In pelletizing, variation in moisture can cause ball size to change and is a common cause of cycling which results in a fluctuating feed to induration. Excessive moisture can cause lumps to form at the cutter bar and contributes to the formation of buildup on the green pellet screens. Green pellets with excess moisture deform and reduce bed permeability. In sintering, accurate control of moisture is also important because moisture must be within the limits that give the bed the required permeability for good burnthrough. In response to these problems, a moisture meter, based on the principle of electrical resistance measurement, was developed. This moisture meter has been a key factor in the development of systems for providing uniform feed of concentrates in most of Bethlehem&apos;s pelletizing and sintering plants. The automatic moisture control system for pelletizing was successfully plant-tested and resulted in the following: (1) Control of moisture in the green pellets to +0.2%. (2) Up to 50% reduction of bentonite consumption. (3) Control of unscreened green pellets so that 85% of the furnace product at Cornwall was within the size range of -5/8 +3/8 in. (4) Improved quality of product with a tumble test of 94 and a "Q" index of 90 as the result of feeding a consistently uniform feed to a shaft furnace. In sintering, where sinter-mix temperature change and variable feed could cause errors in moisture measurement, the system was designed to maintain the correct moisture under virtually all plant operating conditions. It was successfully plant-tested and is now in use in most of Bethlehem&apos;s sintering plants. The system achieves: (1) Control of moisture within the desired limits for optimum production. (2) Continuous measurement and control of moisture even with intermittent feeding of mix, so that attention by the operator is seldom required. The two automatic control systems provide smoother startup, minimize upsets and contribute to the consistent control of process variables in pelletizing and sintering. MOISTURE-CONTROL SYSTEM FOR PELLETIZING Fig. 1 shows the general arrangement of the system for automatic control of moisture in pelletizing.1 In this system a bin level controller, using a single probe which regulates filter speed, maintains a uniform low concentrate level in the bin.&apos; The moisture meter, comprised of an analyzer and control components, continuously measures the moisture in the bed and adds water to adjust to the desired level. The meter is placed in an open-loop (feed-forward) control, i.e., water addition occurs downstream from the probes. The subjects of this study are two corrosion phenomena familiar to operators of aluminum plants employing Soderberg anodes of the vertical type, namely the sul-fide scale formation observed at the steel contact spikes and the corrosion wear observed at the lower edge of the gas collecting skirts. The causes of these corrosion phenomena are discussed on the basis of observations from practice and measurements on commercial cells as well as on laboratory experiments. It is concluded that the anode spike corrosion is mainly due to the attack by sulfur compounds contained in the anodically evolved gases and that this attack is greatly promoted by cracks and pores in the anode carbon embedding the lower spike ends. The corrosion of the gas collecting skirt is mainly attributed to anodic dissolution of the iron during occasional contacts with the melt. ANODE SPIKE CORROSION The visible result of this corrosion is the formation of a brittle loosely adherent scale on the lower ends of the mild steel spikes maintaining the electric contact to the carbon anode, Fig. 1. The thickness of the scale usually varies from 0.5 to 3 mm, but in some cases scale of about 10 mm thickness has been observed by the writers. During the spike pulling, usually repeated every 3 weeks, part of the scale often loosens and remains in the anode carbon, resulting in contamination of the aluminum with iron. This corrosion has been attributed to reaction of the iron with gaseous sulfur compounds originating from the anode paste materials.&apos;-4 This paste usually consists of 70 pct precalcined petroleum coke with 1.2 to 1.4 pct S and 30 pct coal tar pitch containing 0.5 to 0.7 pct S. During operation the gasification of the anode materials takes place in two ways: First, gases are evolved by the gradual baking of the anode paste added on top of the anode. Due to the sealing effected by the upper semifluid zone of the paste, these gases, containing sulfur compounds from the pitch, are forced downward through pores and cracks in the rigid anode carbon. At the temperatures of the zone of the lower ends of the spikes, 700" to 900°C, the original components of the baking gas must undergo decomposition, similar to that taking place with the production of coal gas, resulting in a gas mixture consisting mainly of H2 and CH4 with small percentages of H2S as the main sulfur compound.5 Second, the anodic reaction results in a mixture of C02 and CO, the total quantity of which is about 15 times that of the baking gas. These anode gases must carry the entire sulfur content of the carbon gasified by the anodic reaction. Henry and Holliday6 have shown that COS is the main sulfurous component of the anode gases from Soderberg cells. Soderberg anodes usually exhibit a network of vertical cracks, frequently traversing from one spike to the next one and to the outside of the block and widening downward to the working face of the anode. In addition the anode carbon, particularly that below the spike ends, is rather porous, as indicated in Fig. 1. It therefore seems probable that the anode gases also may partly penetrate to the spike ends. As the anode is partly immersed in the melt, the static pressure of this must forward this penetration. I) SPIKE SCALE COMPOSITION A great number of freshly extracted spikes from industrial plants were inspected and samples of the scale collected for examination. Before analyzing the samples a thin iron oxide layer, formed by air oxidation of the outside of the red hot scale immediately after spike pulling, was removed. On the average the Fe/S ratio found by these analyses corresponded to I the composition FeSl. oo7. X-ray powder patterns showed no oxide and otherwise agreed with those found by Haraldsen7 for iron sulfide with 50.00 at. Pct

FLANKING the Valley of Mexico on the northeast is a mountain range known as the Sierra de Pachuca. This northwesterly-trending range is about 30 miles long and 5 miles wide, its summit attaining an elevation of more than 10,000 feet above sea level, or 2000 feet above the valley floor. Pachuca, a town of 50,000 inhabitants, lies nestled at the southwest base of the range, 60 miles northeast of Mexico City. Three miles to the east, just over the summit and on the northeasterly slope, is the mountain town of Real del Monte with a population of about 20,000. These are the two principal towns in a 40-sq mile area whose yield has brought the district to its high rank among the world&apos;s silver producers. Total production probably exceeds 1.25 billion ounces of silver and 4.5 million ounces of gold. Exploitation by the Spanish was under way by 1530. As the mines were deepened operations became handicapped by the inadequate method of handling water with horse whims and bull skins. To offset this disadvantage a two-mile drainage tunnel was started in 1749 and completed ten years later. John Taylor of London acquired the mines from the third Count of Regla in 1824 and formed the Compania de Real del Monte y Pachuca. Two years later Cornish pumps were brought from England. A Mexican company purchased the British interest in 1848 and within a few years resumed an old project of driving a second, lower three-mile drainage tunnel, completing it in 1857. After Americzn interests acquired control of the property in 1906 operations expanded to an unprecedented scale, despite periods of political strife, unstable prices, labor problems, and a growing burden of taxation. An idea of the scale of operations may be gained from records of the last two decades prior to 1947, the last year for which production information is at hand, during which time production ranged from 1.4 million to 1.1 million tons per year, and the combined development and exploration, exclusive of diamond drilling, amounted to about 18 miles annually. Pachuca differs from Zacatecas and some other Mexican silver vein districts that flourished and de- clined in earlier centuries in that a substantial part of its total production was made after 1900. While the district&apos;s accelerated activity in this century was largely due to the successful application of the cyanide process to the treatment of the ores, improved pumping methods, and new mechanical equipment, it was at the same time stimulated by the opening up of important new orebodies as a result of active and extensive exploration of the vein system. Some of these orebodies were found on veins which terminate upward far below the surface, and though these particular veins do not crop out, they show relationship with a type of alteration which may be their surface expression. The district has been studied by many able geologists, and a large store of information has been accumulated, much of which is recorded in published as well as private papers. Wall Rocks Extrusive Rocks: The Sierra de Pachuca is a thick accumulation of Tertiary eruptive rocks consisting mainly of flows, breccias, and tuffs. Numerous recognizable volcanic vents within the range itself manifest that the range was built up by material ejected from these vents. The maximum thickness of the volcanic pile is not known, but from deep exploration and from relationship with Mesozoic sediments to the north and east it is inferred that the average thickness in the main part of the district may be at least 6000 ft. The extrusive rocks comprise four general types, which in ascending order of age are: andesite, rhyolite, dacite, and basalt. The veins are confined largely to the andesite, the dominant rock of the region. Characteristically this rock is augite andesite, but it includes comparatively acidic as well as basic layers, the acidic strata being

A mass of circumstantial evidence is presented to indicate that the main source of alloy losses in open-hearth tapping is oxidation by air, with the steel apparently reacting with an amount of oxygen equivalent to about 30 times its own volume of air. The effect is erratic from heat to heat, depending largely on turbulence and distance of free fall of the stream of liquid metal. THIS paper reports another phase in a general study of oxidation in the open-hearth, various aspects of which have already been discussed in previous papers.1,2,3 It is based on experiments conducted on commercial, basic open-hearth furnaces at various times when opportunity offered, beginning about 1938, in an attempt to determine the mechanism and measure the amount of air oxidation during the flow of the tapping stream through the air into a ladle. This effect is closely connected, not only with alloy losses and control of chemical analysis, but possibly with various questions regarding inclusion content and steel quality and with a true picture of the deoxidation of steel in general. Thus it is believed that discussion of a large part of the results to date may be of assistance to others who are studying problems related to deoxidation or to steel cleanliness and quality. The literature reveals that strangely little attention has been devoted specifically to the effect of pouring steel through open air. Bardenheuer and Henke4 in 1939, in a paper devoted largely to overall losses of manganese in the basic open-hearth, reported that for a number of heats tapped into a tilted ladle held just beneath the runner so that the maximum distance of drop of the stream through the air was held to less than about 30 in., there was in most cases almost no loss of manganese from furnace to ladle. Hultgren,5 in 1945, showed that in high-carbon basic electric steel deoxidized in the furnace and containing no large inclusions as it left the furnace, large silicate inclusions, often rich in manganese oxide, were present in samples dipped from the pool in the ladle; also that the rise in content of large inclusions (above 0.01 mm dim) was greater when the metal stream was made to spray or flow in a turbulent manner. Our interest in this phase of oxidation in the open-hearth was first aroused by a study of alloy efficiencies on ladle additions. The frequency curves of manganese efficiency (net recovery of metal added in ladle) given in fig. 1 are of interest in this connection. Lowest, and also most variable (47 to 95 pct), recovery was in low-carbon heats having no coal additions to the ladle, progressing upward to a maximum average and least variable (82 to 97 pct) recovery in high-carbon heats killed with aluminum and silicon. Both coal additions and higher carbon contents in the tap stream, as well as additions of silicon and aluminum, help to lower the amount of manganese loss. But the most interesting point is the amount of manganese oxidized in many heats tapped at 0.50 to 1.06 pct carbon. It has been shown in a previous paper3 that the amount of oxygen in the tap stream in such heats is very small, usually below 0.01 pct, too small to oxidize any appreciable amount of manganese. Also, the fact that manganese should be oxidized at all in a metal solution containing such more stable oxide-forming elements as aluminum and silicon is an indication of some rather intense oxidizing effect such as could be caused by reaction with the air during ladle filling. Oxygen Balances from Tap Stream to Teeming Stream: Data in the form of alloy efficiencies, such as those shown in fig. 1, are not a proper measure of such a general oxidation effect. John Taylor of London acquired the mines from the third Count of Regla in 1824 and formed the Compania de Real del Monte y Pachuca. Two years later Cornish pumps were brought from England. A Mexican company purchased the British interest in 1848 and within a few years resumed an old project of driving a second, lower three-mile drainage tunnel, completing it in 1857. After American interests acquired control of the property in 1906 operations expanded to an unprecedented scale, despite periods of political strife, unstable prices, labor problems, and a growing burden of taxation. An idea of the scale of operations may be gained from records of the last two decades prior to 1947, the last year for which production information is at hand, during which time production ranged from 1.4 million to 1.1 million tons per year, and the combined development and exploration, exclusive of diamond drilling, amounted to about 18 miles annually. Pachuca differs from Zacatecas and some other Mexican silver vein districts that flourished and declined in earlier centuries in that a substantial part of its total production was made after 1900. While the district&apos;s accelerated activity in this century was largely due to the successful application of the cyanide process to the treatment of the ores, improved pumping methods, and new mechanical equipment, it was at the same time stimulated by the opening up of important new orebodies as a result of active and extensive exploration of the vein system. Some of these orebodies were found on veins which terminate upward far below the surface, and though these particular veins do not crop out, they show relationship with a type of alteration which may be their surface expression. The district has been studied by many able geologists, and a large store of information has been accumulated, much of which is recorded in published as well as private papers. Wall Rocks Extrusive Rocks: The Sierra de Pachuca is a thick accumulation of Tertiary eruptive rocks consisting mainly of flows, breccias, and tuffs. Numerous recognizable volcanic vents within the range itself manifest that the range was built up by material ejected from these vents. The maximum thickness of the volcanic pile is not known, but from deep exploration and from relationship with Mesozoic sediments to the north and east it is inferred that the average thickness in the main part of the district may be at least 6000 ft. The extrusive rocks comprise four general types, which in ascending order of age are: andesite, rhyolite, dacite, and basalt. The veins are confined largely to the andesite, the dominant rock of the region. Finite contact angles in the rutile-water-organic liquid system are traceable to contamination or are due to addition of a surface-active agent. Finite contact angles are invariably accompanied by hysteresis.1-7 Besides surfactant concentration and pH, the nature of the organic liquid is found to be a factor influencing the magnitude of contact angle hysteresis. In a recent paper the authors have reviewed principles and applications of measurement methods for contact angles and their hysteresis.22 In this paper, these methods are applied to a system consisting of rutile, an organic liquid (benzene, decane, or dode-cane) and water. Surfactant (dodecylamine hydro-chloride) was used at various concentrations and various pH values. MATERIALS A synthetic rutile crystal supplied by the Linde Co. was used. It is a cylinder 1/2 in. diam, with faces cut perpendicular to the c-axis. The crystal is stated to be alumina-free and to be 99.9% pure. Rutile is a high surface energy solid, its calculated average field strength being 2.7 x 105 e.s.u.,9 its dielectric constant10 is 114. The zero point of charge of rutile was measured11 and found to be at pH 6.0. The atomic distances and bond angles of the tetragonal crystal of rutile have been precisely determined.l2 The organic liquids were specially purified. Reagent grade benzene was repeatedly shaken with concentrated sulfuric acid to remove thiophene, then neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution, rinsed with distilled water, dried overnight over anhydrous calcium chloride and filtered. The refractive index of this chemically purified benzene was 1.4977 (at 25°C) - very close to that of pure benzene (n25 1.4979).13 Both n-decane and n-dodecane were washed with aqueous sodium hydroxide, concentrated sulfuric acid (repeatedly, until the acid layer was colorless) and again with alkali, to free the organic hydrocarbon from fatty acids and unsaturated hydrocarbons. The organic phases were subsequently washed with distilled water and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The filtered hydrocarbons were then distilled under vacuum (9-10 mm pressure). Decane, thus purified, showed traces of unsaturated and of carboxylic compounds. On gas chromatographic analysis the purified n-dodecane showed the presence of two impurities. However, the relative retention times of these components did not change substantially when measured on a polar or a nonpolar column. This indicates that the compounds were probably in the same polarity class, i.e. the components were nonpolar like dodecane. Conductivity water has always been one of the liquids. Conductivity of the water used was 10-6 ohm-&apos; cm". Dodecyl ammonium chloride was prepared from pure amine (supplied by Armour and Co., Chicago), by Li in the MIT Mineral Engineering Laboratory.14 The critical micelle concentration at 25°C is known, 0.0138 mol per liter15 or 3.06 gpl. All our experiments have been done at concentrations lower than the critical micelle concentration. The glass vessels, glass drop holder and the rutile crystal were all cleaned with hot chromic acid followed by distilled water, concentrated hydrochloric acid, and again distilled water, and conductivity water. During the experiments, a nitrogen atmosphere was maintained. For this purpose, commercially purified nitrogen was further purified by passing it over hot copper wire at 450°C, then through columns of acidic chromous chloride solution, concentrated alkali solution and distilled water. APPARATUS AND METHODS Hysteresis was produced by the "captive drop" or constant volume drop method as well as by the "expanding-contracting drop" or variable volume drop method. The image of the drop while it is expanding, contracting or moving is projected on a screen and photographed. The developed film is projected through an enlarger and the contact angles measured with a protractor.

Fe-C-Si alloys in silica crucibles were held at 1600°C in a controlled atmosphere of CO and Co2 and the approach to equilibrium was obsertsed. Results were not of sufficient precision to establish the activity and interaction coefficients. Observations 012 the equilibrium provided an average value for the standard free-energy change which differed by + 1.1 kcal from the earlier accepted value. The C-SL relation at other temperatures is calculated and shown graphically. IN the refining of steel in an acid-lined furnace, it is well known that, unlike in basic refining, a very significant amount of silicon may remain dissolved in the metal even when the carbon content approaches a final endpoint. Further, it is known that the residual silicon increases with increasing temperature. The quantitative relation between silicon and carbon can be calculated for equilibrium conditions from data already available on the Fe-C-O and the Fe-Si-O systems. Such equilibrium calculations could show us approximately the limitations within which the reaction would be expected to operate in practice. In the oxidation of a bath containing both carbon and silicon it is well known that at low temperatures silicon is preferentially oxidized first. It can be shown by calculation that at high temperatures carbon will be oxidized preferentially. It is the purpose of this paper to record direct observations on the Si-C relation by means of experiments carried out in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide for Fe-C-Si alloys contained in silica crucibles. When such a system is brought into equilibrium, at a fixed temperature, the composition of the liquid metal is governed by the following equations: Both K1 and K2 are known with a fair degree of accuracy, and may be calculated from the tabulated In general the percentage of CO2 is extremely small compared to that of CO and in the experiments to be described the partial pressure of the latter was generally only slightly below 1 atm. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The induction furnace employed was the same as that described by Rist and chipman&apos; and by Fuwa and chipman.2 It was modified slightly in view of the change from alumina to silica crucibles. The small silica crucible was surrounded by a thin susceptor of molybdenum sheet which in turn rested inside a zirconia crucible. Since the zirconia was subject to breakage, it was supported inside an alumina crucible. The charge consisted of 30 to 35 g of electrolytic iron along with the required amounts of refined silicon and graphite to produce a melt of required composition. Purified carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide were passed into the furnace through carefully calibrated flow meters. Two separate and independent series of experiments were carried out. In Series I (D.H.K.) the melt was held in the furnace at 1600°C for periods of time up to 6 hr. Samples were taken at intervals in silica tubes and were analyzed for carbon and silicon. The results of the last one or two samples taken from each experiment and the direction in which equilibrium appeared to be approached are shown in Table I. In Series II (T.F.) the silica crucibles were of less satisfactory strength and the melts were held at 1600° C for periods of only 2 to 4 hr. In heats number 29 to 45 inclusive, the metal was cooled in the furnace and the ingot itself served as a sample for analysis. In heat 46 and all subsequent heats, samples were withdrawn in silica tubes at the termination of the heat, and these samples were analyzed. The results of all of these experiments in which equilibrium appeared to be approached are listed in Table II.

THE part that acceleration plays in starting a belt conveyor and its effect on belt conveyor design are well understood in a general way. Its practical importance is easily overlooked, however, and under some conditions, it is absolutely necessary to give the problem of acceleration detailed study. Most handbooks on conveyor belting design adequately present basic data for the determination of acceleration values. This paper will only attempt to present practical thinking and a convenient method of treatment of acceleration in belt conveyor design. Mathematical Analysis In working out the various problems of conveyor belt acceleration, the starting point, as presented by the handbooks, is the familiar formula of "force of acceleration is equal to the mass times acceleration." By expressing these fundamental quantities in terms of belt conveyor design, it is possible to arrive at the unsuspected conclusion that the acceleration time for horizontal belt conveyors is independent of the load, and instead, dependent upon the belt speed, the type of drive arrangement and drive pulley, and the idler coefficient of friction. The mathematics leading to this conclusion are shown in Table I, which has been prepared to show, this derivation. While at first the conclusion just given may not seem to be reasonable, further reflection indicates that obviously the type of drive pulley and the type of drive do affect materially the tension in the conveyor belt, and thus, as clearly shown, the time of acceleration is dependent upon the factors mentioned. Inasmuch as all of the factors except time are predetermined by the belt conveyor design, it becomes relatively easy to establish the accelerating time and to reduce further this time determination to a simple graph from which the time in seconds can be read directly. Such a graph is given in Fig. 1. The table appearing on Fig. 1 should be explained further. For a given belt speed, the time of acceleration can be expressed as a percentage of the belt speed. The time of acceleration is also dependent on the drive arrangement, and changes in the drive arrangement consequently change the time of acceleration. It further follows that for a given belt speed, the time expressed as a percentage of that belt speed also changes with the type of drive. Obviously then, it becomes possible to graph the percentage of speed for each type of drive against the belt speed and accelerating time, after which, for a given belt speed and type of drive, the time can be read directly in seconds. Two constants were established for Fig. 1, the first one being the limiting of the maximum acceleration tension to 35 pct of the full load operating tension in the belt. The purpose of this is to limit the total tension imposed upon the belt during the acceleration period to 135 pct of the full load operating tension, which is the amount required to start or breakaway the fully loaded belt conveyor from rest. The other constant is the friction factor used for the idler equipment, which has been established as 0.022. For installations where it is necessary to establish the values of acceleration, invariably high grade idler equipment is used, and it has been established from. field experience that 0.022 for the idler friction factor is amply conservative. The use of this friction factor for idlers must be tempered with judgment, of course, for occasions will arise where more power than indicated is required to start, even with the very best of equipment, such as low temperature operations that tend to congeal the grease in the bearings and thus produce additional friction drag. An inspection of the table in Fig. I affords a convenient rule of thumb method for determining the acceleration time, which conveniently can be 5 pct of the belt speed in seconds. The 5 pct of belt speed figure is close to the average for most types of drives. In using Fig. 1 it must be emphasized that it applies accurately to horizontal belt conveyors only.

Heiland1? emphasized the unfortunate fact that our knowledge of the geological and physical conditions relating to such occurrences is very limited and that a more detailed insight into their physical causes would be extremely valuable for interpreting measured anomalies. He also pointed out that to arrive at quantitative physical formulas that would express the conditions that cause abnormal polarization many more occurrences of the kind would have to be recorded. The first part of this paper is a contribution to such descriptions.

REFRACTORY clay, one of Pennsylvania&apos;s important nonmetallic mineral resources, occurs at several horizons in beds of Pennsylvanian age. The Mercer fireclay, of Pottsville age (Table 1), is the most important of these clays. A study of this fireclay has been conducted by the Pennsylvania Geologic Survey discontinuously over a period of seven years. The work has included field mapping of a rather large area, as well as petrographic, differen¬tial thermal, and X-ray studies of the fireclay. A comprehensive report on the project is now in preparation.

The Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation is actively engaged in the utilization of coal mine refuse in the construction of highway embankments. Long-held objections for utilization are invalidated by research, laboratory data, and construction performance. Laboratory, engineering, construction, and environmental impact analyses are presented from the construction of the Cross Valley Expressway embankment at Forty Fort, Luzerne County, Pa. Comparisons of laboratory data and construction measurements are given. The refuse embankment is the first of its size in Pennsylvania, and possibly the U. S., covering 1.5 million cu yd.

The improvements noted include: (1) modification of practice in shrinkage stoping, (2) use of sublevel caving over grizzlies, (3) improved haulage and loading, (4) use of contract wages wherever possible. The Washington mine is on Jonestown Hill, one mile south of Oxford, in northwestern New Jersey. It is producing 16,000 tons of concentrates a month, which are being shipped to the Alan Wood Steel Company&apos;s furnaces at Swedeland, Pennsylvania.

IN 1945-1946, the author measured temper brittle-ness in ingots of varying composition prepared by remelting SAE 3135 bar stock under vacuum. Since other investigators1-" have been referring to this hitherto unpublished work, belated publication seems worthwhile. Steel in 7 lb batches&apos; was induction melted with nickel additions in a magnesia crucible under a pressure of 10 microns of Hg or less and cast into a 2 in. diam chill mold. The compositions of ingots A, B, and C prepared in this way are shown in Table I; the vacuum melting lowered carbon, manganese, sulphur, and nitrogen content. Ingot B was homogenized 24 hr at 1095°C; ingots A and C were not homogenized. Blanks, M in. square, were cut from each ingot, austenitized 1 hr at 870°C, water quenched, tempered 1 hr at 595"C, and water quenched. Half the blanks from each ingot were given an embrittling treatment of 50 hr at 455°C and water quenched. A few specimens, embrittled and unembrittled, were finally heated 1 hr at 580°C and water quenched. Charpy specimens machined from the blanks were V-notched on the side closest to ingot mid-radius and paired as to radial position in the ingot, one of each pair having received the embrittling treatment and the other not. Specimens were broken in a standard impact machine at various temperatures, the same temperature, in general, being used for both bars of a pair. Fig. 1 shows the results. It is evident that temper brittleness, as measured by the increase in temperature of transition from brittle to tough failure introduced by the 455°C treatment, was decreased but not eliminated by reducing carbon to 0.006 pct, manganese to < 0.004 pct, and nitrogen to 0.001 pct. In another study," temper brittleness was apparently eliminated by -reducing carbon to 0.003 pct, with 0.80 pct Mn and 0.0015 pct N (ingot D)." • Analyses given for carbon below 0.02 pct were made by Jensen method; for nitrogen, by Kjehldahl method. Values quoted else-where&apos;-&apos;." for carbon content of ingot C and for nitrogen content of ingot D were obtained by conventional combustlon and by vacuum fusion methods, respectively, and are considered much less accurate. The 580°C final treatment removed previous em-brittlement (ingot B particularly), indicating that this was "reversible embrittlement."" Metallographic examination of ingot C with 1 pct nital etch revealed only ferrite; ingot A had carbide spheroids uniformly distributed in a ferrite matrix. With ethereal picric acid plus zephiran chloride etchant.&apos; no differences between embrittled and un- embrittled specimens of ingots A, B, or C were noted. Fracture of C and D below the transition temperature was predominantly transcrystalline, with traces of intercrystalline, in both embrittled and unembrittled conditions. The corresponding fracture of unembrittled B was mixed transcrystalline and intercrystalline; of embrittled B, predominantly intercrystalline with some transcrystalline areas. . . . The ores treated by the Canada Consolidated Gold Mining Company at Deloro, Ontario, have been described in a paper read before the Institute in 1881. They are gold-bearing arsenical sulphurets of iron (mispickel), carrying the theoretical proportions of 42 per cent. of arsenic, 20 per cent. of sulphur, and the remainder iron. The gangue is quartz, calc spar, and some talcose, slaty rock, evidently resulting from the decomposition of the wall-rock, which on each side of the veins is syenitic granite. The treatment of the ore consists of: 1. Crushing. 2. Concentrating.
