Conditions necessary for plane front growth of two-piwse solids from a single-phase melt are discussed. Alloys consideved are those from a simple binary system containing a eutectic, but are not, in general, of eutectic cornposition. It is concluded that: 1) plane front solzdification is favored by low growth rate, steep thermal gradient, and essential absence of convection; and 2) for steady-state solidification, the structure should resemble that of directionally solidified eutectics (lamellar, rodlike). Factors affecting THERE are many materials, including metals, available today with strengths in excess of 10' psi when in whisker or fiber form. The challenge facing those interested in practical application of such materials has been, and remains, the economic production and incorporation of the whiskers or fibers into useful engineering composites. solute redistribution along the growth direction are described quantitatively, by numerical solution of the diffusion equation. Effects of variations in growtlz rate on average composition of the solidifying composite are significant. For alloys not too close to a single-phase region, the initial transient at constant gvowth velocity is the order of D/R where D is diffusion coefficient in the liquid and R is interface velocity. Composites consisting of the reinforcing phase within a metallic matrix have excited particular interest in recent years because of their potential for high strength at elevated temperature and for resistance to brittle fracture. Techniques employed to incorporate the whiskers or fibers in the metallic phase have included 1) liquid metal infiltration, 2) solid or liquid phase sintering, and 3) direct growth of composites from the melt, of rodlike or lamellar morphology, by directional solidification of eutectic alloys. THERE is a considerable tonnage of iron ore in the Menominee Range Michigan that is unsalable only because it has too large a content of sulphur. Beneficiation of such ore is economically desirable, as a rela-tively large quantity of finished concentrate would be obtained (deleteri-ous sulphur mineral content being generally less than 5 per cent) and because large blocks of such ore have been developed incidentally during search for low-sulphur ore. Research on the flotation beneficiation of these high-sulphur ores consisted of: (1) a study of the flotative properties of the principal min-erals in a nearly puree state, (2) flotation of synthetic mixtures of these pure minerals and (3) application of this experimental information to samples of the ores. Gypsum in iron ores is extremely deleterious; but when sufficiently free from impurities it is a valuable commodity. In 1934, the United States produced 1,500,000 tons of calcined and uncalcined gypsum valued at $13,700,000'. Of this quantity and value, Michigan produced approxi-mately 19 per cent4. Thus this investigation may also prove to be of interest in connection with the gypsum industry if minerals separation, such as flotation, becomes necessary in the future processing of gypsum. Data on the flotative properties of gypsum would also be of interest to the science of flotation because such information has been extremely limited. The technical literature reveals one reference to the flotation of gypsum, in which was discussed the use of the mineral, with several others, to determine the relation between the floatability of minerals and the pH of the flotation solution2. This investigation necessarily was not comprehensive in regard to gypsum, but it did show that the mineral could be floated with oleic acid under varying pH conditions.

The southeastern coast of China, from Ning-Po to .Macao, represents an element in the continental mass of Asia which has at practically all times in the remote past exhibited a tendency to rise rather than to subside.' This strip of land, 1,000 or more miles long by perhaps 150 miles wide at its widest part, has in fact stood above sea level since at least early Cambrian times, while the great basins to the north and west were receiving their massive accumulations of Sinian (Cambro-Ordovician), Carboniferous, and later deposits. We find, .therefore, a coastal fringe of metamorphic and igneous rocks bordering the huge expanses of sedimentary rocks which occupy the interior. Hong-Kong is situated toward the southwestern extremity of this fringe. Hong-Kong is an island of approximately 30 sq. miles, on the north shore of which is situated the city of Victoria, with its 325,000 inhabitants. This island was ceded to Great Britain in 1842. In 1560 the peninsula of Kowloon (about 5 sq. miles), being that part of the mainland lying directly across from the city of Victoria, was added to Hong Kong. Thirty-eight years later, in 1898, a stretch of territory, including the mainland behind Kowloon and. numerous adjacent islands, was leased to Great Britain for 99 years. This last addition is known as the "New Territory of Hong-Kong" and comprises 376 sq. miles in area. A map of Hong-Kong, Kowloon, and the "New Territory" is shown in Fig. 1. My studies of this total area of over 400 sq. miles were devoted primarily to an investigation of the mineral resources. Systematic mapping of the immensely complex exposures of rocks was not possible in the time at my disposal. However, observations in, this. direction warrant a few generalizations.

One problem of reservoir engineering is the early estimation of the size of newly discovered reservoirs. Often these reservoirs are the expansion type in which sizeable pressure drops occur incident to the production of small fractions of the oil reserve, above the bubble point, and a material balance equation may be solved to find the reserve. The early form of this equation' considered only the compressibility of the oil. Later Hall2 showed that the compressible nature of the formation rock is a significant factor in production above the bubble point, and he presented a new equation which includes a formation (rock) compressibility term. This note presents a further extension of the material balance equation as applied to volumetric, unsat-urated reservoirs above the bubble point by including a term for the presence and compressible nature of the interstitial water. DERIVATION OF EQUATION During a decline in average reservoir pressure, ?p ?p, — p1 the initial reservoir volume V,, will decrease to some value V, due to the reduction in pore volume as a result of a decline in the hydrostatic pressure within the formation, and v, = V,, [l — cr ?p]......(1) The formation compressibility c, is expressed in terms of change in pore volume per unit pore volume per psi. THE problem of reaction rates in the open-hearth process is essentially that of trying to form a fairly clear picture of the "chemical mechanisms" in the bath. Quantitative data on reaction rates would not be very useful even if they were available; however, what few , approximate data there are, can be used in combination with data given in Chapters XVI and XVII to sketch a picture of the "chemical mechanics" of the open-hearth process that is consistent with essentially all the present available evidence. The result may later be found incorrect in many details but even so it will illustrate certain useful methods for obtaining a clearer understanding of the process. As discussed in the last portion of Chapter XIII chemical reactions in general involve the following factors: 1. The reacting molecules are mixed together in space in such fashion as to favor collisions among them. 2. A certain number of collisions occur per unit time among the reagent molecules, depending on their concentration and on temperature. 3. A certain percentage of these collisions result in reaction, these being the collisions between those molecules possessing at the moment energy levels above certain minimum values. The temperature factor enters mainly through (3), and its effect is very marked. (What is called temperature is really the mean energy content of all the molecules of the substance involved; at any one temperature a certain proportion of the molecules will have much higher energy content than the mean value.) Various reaction rates measured at around room temperatures have been found to be speeded from 1.6 to 4.0 times by an increase of only 15 to 20°F., simply because increasing temperature produces a rapidly increasing percentage of molecules with energy levels above the minimum needed to produce chemical reaction in a collision.

The Philippine Islands have produced no oil commercially; nevertheless, oil is known to be present at various places in the is1ands.l Although all attempts to produce oil commercially have failed, no intelligent, persistent exploration has been carried out. The Richmond Petroleum Corpn. (a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of California) and a syndicate headed by Ralph Arnold are at present engaged in exploring Bondoc Peninsula in Tayabas Province, one of the promising Philippine areas, in a manner that promises to test the petroleum possibilities adequately and intelligently. How can the petroleum resources of an entirely undeveloped area like the Philippines be estimated, where not even the areal extent of the various geologic formations is known? Obviously no calculated figure for assured future production can be derived. Yet a study of the evidence of the occurrence of petroleum, the character of the possible reservoir beds, the probable source rocks, the character and size of favorable structures, and the area over which petroleum-bearing rocks are known to occur, will throw some light on the question. The fact that rocks of the same geologic age and similar composition have been explored and are producing in Borneo, Sumatra, and Java to the south and in Formosa and Japan to the north also affect the problem, so that one can obtain some idea of the quantity of petroleum that may reasonably be expected from the Philippines. It is this measure of the possibilities rather than a definite calculation of petroleum reserves that is presented herewith. This paper will not attempt to describe, nor even to enumerate in detail, the occurrences of petroleum in the Philippines, as such data have already been published. Experimental data 1,2 on the energy dissipation in polycrystalline materials over a large frequency spectrum (10-2 cps to 106 cps) suggests that the quality factor [(e= Q )] is independent of the frequency providing both fluid-saturated and ferromagnetic materials are excluded from the test data. Additional data 3 suggest that the quality factors are less at high pressures than at low pressure, i.e., Q increases as the pressure increases. Observations on the dissipation of single quartz crystals with their polycrystalline counterparts indicate that the energy dissipation is less for the single crystal than for the aggregate .2 Both of the above observations, particularly the latter, are indicative of the fact that the dissipation increases with increasing surface contact within the polycrystal, i.e., a frictional attenuation scheme may be operative. Knopoff and MacDonald 4 have shown that a friction model gives rise to a quality factor frequency independence property. A partial listing of some values of Q, observed for both metals and non-metals, is given in Tables I, II, and III. In Tables I and II, the data all show Qs>Qp, i.e., the energy loss per cycle for compressional body waves is greater than that for shear waves of the same frequency. Most samples in Table III show the same effect. It is objective of this paper to suggest: (1) a frictional attenuation scheme may account for the observed losses incurred during the propagation of low amplitude stress waves in dry brittle rock and, in particular, that such a scheme can account for the observed relative magnitudes of the quality factors for P and S wave motion; (2) a friction scheme can readily explain the difference between the dynamic and static moduli in dry brittle rock; (3) a friction scheme, while in itself an intrinsically

It is well known, in metallurgical circles, though less recognized in the technical press, that there have been remarkable increases in the capacity of the blast furnace in the last five .years. In places this capacity has been almost doubled. This paper will brief the experimental work carried on during more than five years with the direct assistance of the technical staffs of three lead smelters treating three distinctive types of feed. The first is the custom smelter of the International Smelting and Refining Co. at Tooele, Utah1, with a multiplicity of ores; the second, the Kellogg, Idaho, smelter of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating CO.2, treating an exceedingly rich lead charge, such as is now being made more and more as the practice of concentration is improved; and the third, the smelter at Trail, B. C., owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited3, which treats highly zinciferous charges and later recovers zinc from the slag. In comparing operations at these three smelters it must be clearly recognized that the objectives in smelting differ through differences in economics. Many operations are not, then, strictly comparable. There have also been decided improvements in operation since all of the smelters were examined, though this was but a relatively short time ago. The general factors that govern speed in smelting and the loss of metals in the smelters examined will be stressed. (For details of operation the reader is referred to the original papers.) This paper will then be an examination of the fundamentals of operating units in a search for improvements, and not a description of three great lead smelters. THE method of thermal analysis, so important in the development of metallographic science, has of recent years been falling into disuse owing to the development of other physical methods which give results easier of interpretation and which can be used for the study of either equilibrium or transitional conditions because they do not require a continuously changing temperature. Nevertheless thermal analysis remains useful in the study of reactions that take place rapidly, and the simplicity of the experimental technique and the general availability of the apparatus involved are points in its favor. Theoretically, thermal analysis is capable of giving specific and latent heat measurements and therefore should permit the study of reactions on a more fundamental basis than any other method. It is, however, difficult or impossible to obtain quantitative heat measurements from cooling curves obtained in the usual way. Even if the furnace containing the sample is cooled or heated at a linear rate, or if a gradient furnace is employed to maintain a constant rate over a large range of tempera-ture, the heat flow from or to the specimen depends on its previous his-tory, for the difference of temperature between the specimen and its surroundings varies. The emissivity of the specimen surface, moreover, is unlikely to be constant. The able mathematical analysis by Russell,1 although it prevents misinterpretation of data, has an effect rather the reverse of that intended, and leaves the reader doubtful of the possibility of ever obtaining quantitative results from thermal curves. Nothing can be done to apply thermal analysis to the study of equilib-rium conditions of reactions that are not completed at rates of tempera-ture change below about 1° C. per minute, and this unfortunately excludes most solid transformations in alloys. ? In June, 1911, the writer spent a few days in studying the economic geology of the vicinity of Park City. During this rather hurried visit a number of specimens of ore were collected, which have since been examind. The results of these investigations show that bournonite (PbCu-SbSa) is present in the ores in greater or less quantity. This fact has never before been reported, as far as can be learned. The failure to recognize this mineral is due to its similarity to tetrahedrite, with which it has probably been confused during a long period of years. Jamesonite (Pb2sb2s6) has been reported from the region in a rather doubtful manner, but the writer has seen it in notable amounts from several mines, and can offer the first analysis of this mineral from the district. Calamine (HzZn2SiO5) was found at one mine and has never been ecognized and reported from the district. Geogbaphy and Geology Park City, Utah, is located at an elevation of about 7,000 ft. above sea level on the eastern slope of the Wasatch mountains. It is situated approximately 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. ' The geology and ore deposits have been described in detail by Bout well and Woolsey.' The mines visited are situated south-southeast from the town. The Silver King Coalition mine is located in Woodside gulch about 1 mile southeast of Park City, at an altitude of about 8,100 ft. The other mines visited were the Daly West and Quincy, which are in Empire canyon about 2 miles sontheast of the town, at elevations of 8,300 to 8,500 ft. respectively. The Daly Judge tunnel goes into the mountain from Empire canyon about 1 mile south of the city, at an altitude of 7,700ft.

The year 1928 has recently.passed from the picture and it is at this time that the various divisions of the oil industry are giving thought to plans for the present year. The outstanding characteristic of the industry in 1928 was the successful curtailment of oil production to the market's needs. It has been thought advisable to look ahead and endeavor to anticipate the oil demand for the coming year, and thus determine the volume of oil that can be safely produced without causing major additions to surface stocks. The year has been one of smaller additions to stocks than in 1927, a record demand for oil products, and a further developed spirit of cooperation among oil producers, as well as various other achievements. It is well to pause and take stock of ourselves. Present Status of Crude Oil Supply and Demand The total daily new supply of oil is at this time1 about 2,960,000 bbl. per day, made up of 2,585,000 bbl. domestic crude production, 125,000 bbl. casinghead gasoline, and 250,000 bbl. of imports. With the present low consumption, due to the falling off in the winter season demand, it is estimated that about 150,000 bbl. a day are now being run to storage, and that the first three months in 1929 will see large-sized additions to storage. Consumption plus exports of oil have increased at a regular rate from year to year, and although oil production in 1928 passed the 1,000,000,-000 bbl. mark for the second time in the history of the United States, with a production of 25,000,000 bbl. more than in 1927, only 30,000,000 bbl. were added to storage during 1928. This is compared to an addition of 65,500,000 bbl. in 1927.

THE Federal income tax law permits as a deduction in determining net income "in the case of mines, . . . a reasonable allowance for depletion and for depreciation of improvements, according to the, peculiar conditions in each case, based upon cost, including cost of development not otherwise deducted: Provided, that in the case of such properties acquired prior to Mar. 1, 1913, the fair market value of the property (or the taxpayer's interest therein) on that date shall be taken in lieu of cost up to that date." The law provides for a reasonable allowance but the regulations provide for a definite method of computation that possesses more the virtue of simplicity than that of reasonableness. Article 210 of Regulations 45. reads: "When the cost or value as of Mar. 1, 1913, or within 30 days after the date of discovery of the property shall have been determined, and the number of mineral units in the property as of the date of acquisition or valuation shall have been estimated, the division of the former amount by the latter figure will give the unit value for purposes of depletion, and the depletion allowance for the taxable year may be computed by multiplying such unit value by the number of units of mineral extracted during the year." This is simple, but is it reasonable? The intent of the law is clearly that the cost of the ore in the ground shall be considered as part of the cost of the same ore when removed and sold. The regulations fail to carry out that intent, because of the unwarranted assumption that all the ore in the mine cost the same amount per ton. This is what gives the Treasury Department's method its simplicity, but at the same time robs it of its reasonableness because the assumption is contrary to fact.

In open cast mining of coal, the cost per ton of output is four to five times less and labor productivity five to six times higher than in under- ground mining. This is why the coal industry of the USSR is oriented toward giving priority to the development of open cast coal mining. Deposits of coal which lend themselves to open cast mining in the USSR are enormous, with 90% of them located in the eastern part of the country. The technique is by no means limited to the eastern part, however-despite wide variations in climate, other parts of the Soviet Union also use open cast mining. The occurrence and type of coal deposits in the USSR vary greatly. Some of them are flat coal seams 2 to 40 m thick, and a few are even thicker. There are also deposits having a complex mode of occurrence, such as a series of seams of different thicknesses with angles of dip varying from slightly inclined to steep, often with dislocations. Overburden materials are quite diverse with regard to physical and mechanical properties. There are three kinds encountered-loose or unconsolidated overburden, medium-hard material, and hard rock. The stripping ratio, i.e., the amount of cover per ton of mined coal, varies from 1 to 12 cu m per ton. SYSTEMS OF MINING The great diversity of natural conditions has brought forth a variety of technologies and techniques in the open cast mining of coal. In open cast practice, the following systems of mining are used : (1) a transportation system in which the overburden is transported to spoil banks by rail or by truck; (2) a system with direct disposal of overburden, the rocks being dumped on spoil banks with a stripping excavator; and

THE formation of ferrite in supersaturated aus-tenite has been the subject of considerable speculation and investigation. Aaronson has recently reviewed the data pertinent to this reaction.' Since these data in all cases refer to ternary or high-order alloys it is not possible to put them to the test of simple binary diffusion formalism. It has not, therefore, been possible to make a certain statement as to the controlling mechanisms in the process. An assessment of the difficulties inherent in the conventional statistical metallographic approach suggested that a study of the problem by means of a macroscopic two-phase diffusion couple might contribute useful information. Accordingly, such a couple was synthesized, and the rate of motion of a ferrite-austenite phase boundary (the growth of an austenite layer at the expense of a ferrite layer) was determined. Wagner originally produced a diffusion solution applicable to the motion of a planar phase interface in a binary diffusion couple, assuming local equilibrium throughout the diffusion zone. This solution, which is stated free of typographical error* in Ref. where a is the position of the interface in A space (A = x/fi), C; and CL1 are the equilibrium inter-facial concentrations in phases I and 11, C: and C*1 are the initial bulk concentrations in phases I and 11, and & and are diffusion coefficients (assumed constant). If a diffusion couple consisting of homogeneous layers of ferrite and austenite in equilibrium is raised to a higher temperature, the austenite layer will grow at the expense of the ferrite. Provided that the thickness of the ferrite layer is much less than the diffusion length of carbon in ferrite, we can set , so that Wagner's solution reduces to

(written discussion*).-We have been informed that the nickeliferous ores of Sudbury could furnish more palladium than the whole of the present world supply, together with a large amount of platinum. As the quantity of ore melted in Sudbury in 1916 totaled 1,521,689 tons, giving 80,010 tons of matte, and as the average of 3 years, up to 1915, are stated to show an average of 0.10 oz. of platinum and 0.15 oz. of palladium per ton of matte, this would indicate the presence of 12,000 oz. of palladium and 8000 oz. of platinum in the ore mined in 1916.1 Interest in the platinum situation is now more intense than it has ever been, and the great importance of this metal for many special uses is being increasingly appreciated. For munition manufacture, for chemical apparatus, in dentistry, and for jewelry, it has been and continues to be in great demand in spite of the phenomenal rise in its value. It is true that this has necessarily led to a search for substitutes, especially for dentistry and chemical uses, but while some of these have been found to answer the needs fairly well, for many 'other purposes platinum is still employed in spite of its great cost. As to the jewelry industry, the most public-spirited efforts have been made to restrict its use, and its employment in the manufacture of watchcases, purses, bracelets, and catches has been abandoned, gold being used in its place. The prime cause of the present shortage is, of course, the elimination of 'the Russian supply which, in normal times, constituted probably more than 90 per cent. of the world's production. B.H. Bergstrorn (Research Div., Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co., Milwaukee, Wis.) — Fuerstenau and Cohen have concluded from our study of single particle crushing, which had suggested that the size moduli of the crushed specimens were determined by the specific energy expended independent of feed size, that the same independence with respect to feed size exists for the specific energy-product size relationship for rod mills. They present data supporting this conclusion. Our single particle crushing experiments were on single spheres of soda-lime (type of glass was not given in our study) glass for which the feed size can truly be neglected. However, the feed size cannot be neglected in any case where the effective size modulus of the feed is not too much coarser than the size modulus of the product. This can be illustrated in the second experi- ment of Fuerstenau and Cohen where the feed is considered to be the original -6 +%mesh material. However, one can also consider the product from the 7.5-min grind to be the feed for the 10, 15, 20, 25-min grinds, and the 10-min product to be the feed for the 15, 20, 25-min grinds, etc. If the specific energy-product size moduli curves are drawn for these other feeds, as shown on Fig. 3, the new curves (and some curvature is apparent) are much steeper than the -6 +%mesh feed line. The slopes of these new curves are about -1.5, —1.8 and -3.0. This observation is in accord with the observation by Bond, who states that the net specific energy input to a grinding mill is equal to the specific energy represented by the product less the specific energy represented by the feed. During 1932 no important changes occurred in the position of Africa as a producer of petroleum. The progress of development and production in each of the areas of interest is described below. Egypt The producing fields of Egypt are Hurghada and Gemsa, located on the west short of the Red Sea, and Abu Durba in the Sinai Peninsula. Most of the production is obtained from the Hurghada field, chiefly from beds of Cretaceous age. To the end of 1930 the Hurghada field had produced 2,831,751 tons of petroleum. The Gemsa field, discovered in 1909, reached its peak of production in 1914, when 88,000 tons were produced. Of late years the production has greatly declined. Total production of the field to the end of 1930 is 182,870 tons. The total production of Abu Durba to the end of 1930 is 7069 tons. The production of Egypt for recent years is as follows: 1928, 269,324 tons; 1929, 271,520; 1930, 281,997 (1,996,000 bbl.); 1931, 288,260 (2,038,000 bbl.); 1932, 253,182 (approximately 1,790,000 bbl.). Mozambique The operations of Inyaminga Petroleum Ltd., which was engaged in drilling in the colony, have been suspended. Angola Drilling operations in this colony, conducted by Companhia de Petroleo de Angola under a concession from the Portuguese Government, were continued. A test well drilled at Cacoba, about 60 miles southeast of Luanda, to a depth of 5651 ft. was not a commercial producer. A second well was being drilled in the vicinity at the end of 1932. The temperature gradient in the subhearth metal or "salamandern of the iron bhst furnace results in the establishment of gradients in the concentrations of silicon, manganese, carbon, and sulfur. The temperature and compositional variations observed in three blast furnaces are analyzed according to irreversible thermodynamics and the systems appear to be close to the steady state condition. Apparent heats of transport, Q, for silicon, manganese, carbon, and sulfur are found to be respectively -17.5, -5, -2.1, and+22k cal per g mol. In conclusion the significance of thermal diffusion in extraction metallurgy is briefly discussed. INCREASING interest has been shown in recent years in the application of irreversible thermodynamics to metallurgical problems. In particular studies have been made of the transport of matter in thermal gradients1-' and under chemical gradients imposed by a binary solvent However, no detailed example in extraction metallurgy has been reported although gradients are the essence of many extractive processes. The case of the distribution of elements in molten blast furnace iron under a thermal gradient is discussed here. DATA In blast furnace operation the hearth bottom is often extensively destroyed by molten metal, and the metal may penetrate perhaps 10 ft into the furnace foundations forming a "bear" or "salamander". Several hundred tons of molten metal may thus exist beneath the level of the conventional tap hole and remain relatively undisturbed for several years under a thermal gradient. This system is subject to little convective stirring because the temperature decreases from top to bottom, and mechanical stirring due to movements in the stack and to tapping operations is unlikely to penetrate far into the metal.
