THE standard scale of temperature that it is attempted to realize in practice is the centigrade thermodynamic scale, as defined by Kelvin about the middle of the last century. This scale would be exactly realized with a perfect1 gas in an ideal gas thermometer, and is closely realized with the more permanent gases. From the departure of certain properties of these gases from those of a perfect gas, it is possible to deduce the amount of the departure of the temperature scales, defined by their use, from the thermodynamic scale. In nearly all the precise experimental work done during the latter part of the last century, it was necessary for the experimenter to establish his own gas-thermometer scale, and the labor involved in this was often greater than that involved in the prime object of the experimental work undertaken. The experimental difficulties involved in gas thermometry led to the establishment of temperature scales differing from one another by amounts considerably greater than could be accounted for by the differences in the properties of the gases used. Results were, therefore, expressed in terms of somewhat different temperature scales, snaking correlation of such results difficult and uncertain.

AT the Annual Meeting of the A.1.M.E. last February, Cornelius F. Kelley, chairman of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., was presented with the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal for "conspicuous success as administrative head of great enter- prises engaged in the production of nonferrous metals at home and abroad; for inspiring leadership of an organization that has trained able engineers for service wherever ores are mined and metals are recovered; and for enhancing the prestige of metal mining in the financial and industrial world." Mr. Kelley's acceptance speech follows: I am not unmindful of the fact that the distinction is not to be considered a personal one, but that by the language of the citation itself it is rather a recognition of the service that has been performed by the many trained men of an industrial organization that in the arts of mining and metallurgy and in the fabrication of metal products has performed a distinct service to the industry and to mankind. In that spirit, the award is accepted, and on behalf of the organization I represent and myself, I thank you and assure you that the honor is deeply appreciated.

ALTHOUGH valuable information has been pub-lished on the important problems of slag losses with which every copper metallurgist has to contend, a great deal of money is still being wasted in copper smelters all over the world, through metal being irretrievably lost in reverberatory slags. When smelting a relatively low-grade pyritic concentrate together with a proportion of direct-smelting oxi- dized ore, as is done in Oroya, slag volumes are of necessity high, and even a relatively clean slag, say of 0.5 pct Cu, means a loss of almost 4 pct of all the copper charged, or over $1,000,000 annually at present output and prices. While it is known that such losses can often be reduced by allowing the slag time to settle, with or without addition of a reducing agent such as coal or pyrite, the facilities for such treatment are not always available in a plant of old design working to capacity under severe space limitations. THE gas phase is one of the indispensible ingredients in flotation operations. Flotation depends on the collision of an air bubble and a mineral particle in a pulp and their ability to remain in contact long enough for adherence to take place. Before it is possible to understand the mechanics of air bubble-mineral particle encounter, it is necessary to learn more about the nature of bubbles themselves before collision with a mineral particle has taken place. To date, little work has been done on air bubbles in flotation systems. In 1945 Fahrenwald1 presented a study of the role of frothers on air bubbles and on aeration in flotation, and recently Wark and Sutherland2 discussed the work of Rosenberg3 in relation to flotation. The research reported in this present article was undertaken to investigate systematically the effect of bubble size and the concentration of certain reagents on the terminal velocity, shape, path, and drag coefficient of single bubbles in distilled water. Most of the work is concerned with the effect of a-terpineol on bubble motion in water, but studies were made with potassium chloride, potassium hydroxide, potassium ethyl xanthate, and potassium amyl xanthate.

ORDERING'S effect on the creep strength and other plastic properties of metals is unknown at the present time. Sachs and Weerts' attempted to compare the mechanical properties of the ordered and disordered state by comparing a quenched specimen with one annealed for a long time at a low temperature. This experiment is unsatisfactory because it introduces a possible effect from quenching. Barrett' used a hot impact test, but his method was not sufficiently sensitive to indicate any discontinuity in plastic behavior in the neighborhood of the critical temperature. On the theoretical side, Fisher9 as suggested that short range order would strengthen an alloy, but he gives no conclusions as to the effect of long range order. Cottrell" has discussed the interaction between long range order and dislocations, but does not indicate whether slip in a completely ordered alloy without domain boundaries is appreciably more difficult than slip in the disordered state. Because order exists in so many alloy systems, it is most important to prove experimentally whether long range order weakens or strengthens a metal. THE importance of topography to geology is so commonly underrated as to deserve to be pointed out again and again. The relation of topography to the different branches of geology may be seen best by a glance at them all. Geology is well understood to consist of the observation of facts about rocks as materials of the earth (geognosy ), and the explanation of those facts (geogeny). The facts to observe are: I. GEOMETRICAL, as (1) structure, including the dip and strike at different points, the size, shape, and position of basins and saddles; (2) vertical section, that is, the thickness of rock groups and of their parts ; (3) horizontal or geographical position. II. PHYSICAL, such as texture, whether sedimentary or crystalline ; and, if crystalline, whether granitic, porphyritic, amygdaloidal, globular, or concretionary; whether compact or granular; coarse or fine; pervious or impervious; hard or soft; firm or tender; with cleavage or without; massive or thin; the microscopic structure; also whether magnetic or not; soluble or insoluble; fusible or infusible; and the constituent minerals. Resident Instruction: The character of an institution, the varying demands made upon it, its geographical location, its own internal organization, all are factors that predispose against rigid standards, curriculum-making, research programs, and extension services. Mineral industries educators must keep in mind that the under- graduate is the core of the college, a philosophy that implies a set of inviolable principles.1 They will want to turn out graduates with overwhelming talent in their field, together with incorruptible ethics, prepared to deal with people, as well as with theories and things. Curriculum-making is a popular educational pastime. No course makes or breaks a curriculum. The particular qualifications and interests of individual students must find expression. However, selection must be made under guidance so that the student's individual needs are realized. In this way, specialization can be introduced into curricula previously conceived to be of general science or engineering nature only. In its essence, formal education is society's endeavor to put old heads on young shoulders, to implant the experience of centuries in the youthful generation. In this paper it is suggested that the degree of contiguity (or contact) between adjacent grains be described by three parameters which can be rigorously determined from measurements on a random plane of polish. An expression is also derived for the number of contacts per unit volume and it is shown that this quantity can-not, in general, be estintated from measurements on a random plane. IN a recent contribution1 Gurland has proposed various parameters for describing the degree of contiguity (or contact) between grains of the same phase in an alloy. To relate these parameters to measurements on a random two-dimensional section, it was necessary in most cases to make some assumption about the form of the structure. Since Gurland was specifically interested in sintered carbide structures, he chose, quite reasonably, to assume that the grains were constant-size spheres and that all the intersections were flat areas of constant radius. Since, as we will show, the relationships between the parameters and the measurements are strongly dependent on the grain shape and size distribution, it is evident that these assump tions will not be satisfactory approximations for a

THIS paper by. Georges Ranque is an attempt to reason out the conditions of formation and stability of inclusions and to establish an operative process capable of eliminating or minimizing them. The paper consists of two parts; one in which the author considers the laws of physical chemistry and physics that apply to liquid slag-metal systems and one in which he describes a practice based on the theoretical considerations. Such a paper is bound to contain controversial points and it is therefore your speaker's intention to present Mr. Ranque's side of the picture to the best of his ability without regard for any thoughts or criticisms of his own. RISING VELOCITIES OF INCLUSIONS Most nonmetallic inclusions have densities ranging from about 1.7 to s, while liquid steel has a density of about 7. Under these conditions, ferrostatic pressure should cause the inclusions, being lighter, to rise from the bath and be eliminated. This rising tendency is expressed by Stokes' law, from which may be calculated the rising velocity of a spherical particle in a liquid medium whose density and viscosity are known.

G. E. Agar (Manager, Minerals Processing Research, International Minerals & Chemical Corp., Skokie, III.) — The author notes a discrepancy between the parameters a and ß which are the slopes of the size distribution and energy-size modulus plots respectively. The reason for the discrepancy and the systematic decrease in the magnitude of a with grinding time is abundantly clear from the work of Fuerstenau8 on dry grinding. Fuerstenau shows very clearly in his Fig. 5 that at short retention times the parameter a is the same as that obtained by sizing over the complete size range. From this figure, it is obvious that sizing to only 400 mesh gave distribution curves similar to Mular's - that is, the slope apparently decreased systematically with increased grinding. As a consequence of the improper determination of a, the magnitude of ß given by Mular must be larger than the true value. In order to demonstrate this, the following Fig. 6 was taken from Mular's paper (his Fig. 1). Messrs. Thomas & Cross, having leased from the Akron Cement Company from twelve to fifteen acres of abandoned cement-tunnels and chambers, for the purpose of propagating mushrooms for the market, commenced operations about a year ago, and are now beginning to furnish mushrooms in quantities to the local markets of Buffalo and Rochester. The quarries, or, more properly, the mines, of the Cement Company are located at Akron, Erie County, PIT. Y. The cement-rock occurs in a stratum about 71/2 to 8 feet in thickness, which is overlain by from 1.5 to 25 feet of limestone and flint-rock. There is a gentle rise from the opening of the tunnel inwards, giving a natural drainage and leaving the chambers comparatively dry. The roof is good and is supported by pillars and heavy timbers. The mushroom-beds are located about 300 feet from the opening of the tunnel, and are made in the form of mounds about 3 feet by 12 feet, at the base, and 24 feet high, giving to the chambers the appearance of a subterranean graveyard. The goal of this study is to evaluate the coal flotation process and the interaction of the chemical (reagent) and hydrodynamic (machine, operational) variables as they affect yield, flotation of various sized particles, and sulfur and ash rejection. Coal flotation is found to follow a first order process with the coal floating much faster than either pyrite or ash. This circumstance may be used to achieve gangue rejection during flotation. When floated with MZBC, cresol, or pine oil frothers, coal floats in the size sequence: 108 pm ( - 65 mesh), 589 x 808 pm (88 x 65 mesh), and 1.17 mm x: 589 pm (14 x 18 mesh). However with a substantial amount of fuel oil collector, all particles tend to float roughly in proportion to their content in the feed. An increasing aeration rate was found to be the most important variable in increasing the coal flotation rate. This increase in flotation rate, unfortunately, is also accompanied by an increase in the flotation rate of the pyrite. The rejection of pyrite during coal flotation is best accomplished at low aeration rates, low frother concentrations, and low impeller speeds.

Location THE hydro-electric plant of the Peninsular Power Co., is located at what is commonly known as Lower Twin Falls on the Menominee River. This location is about 33 miles north of the city of Iron Mountain, Mich. The principal points of delivery of electric energy from this plant are in the mining regions adjacent to Florence, Wis., and Iron River, Mich., and in the cities of Iron River and Iron Mountain. The hydro-electric plant at Twin Falls and the substation of the Iron Mountain Electric Light & Power Co. are connected by a 6,600-volt transmission line carried on steel towers and steel poles, the latter being used within the city limits. The plant at Twin Falls and the substation at Iron River, about 36 miles distant, are connected by a 66,000-volt, duplicate, three-phase transmission line, supported on steel towers. At Iron River, are located a 1,500-kw. auxiliary steam plant, and the substation, from which the current is distributed to the mines in this vicinity. A description of the auxiliary plant, main and customers' substations, and of the main and secondary transmission lines, follows later in this paper.

Rougher Cells The photo shows one of three carloads of new Denver Equipment Co. rougher flotation machines destined for a single customer. [ ] Low level froth overflow on both sides, and double impeller mechanisms in an open-flow type tank, were designed to enable control of variable conditions in the rougher circuit for better metallurgy. Intense agitation and aeration are claimed, for effective recovery of low-grade mineral particles. Standard parts are used, interchangeable with regular Denver Sub-A units. The Super Rougher is now in production and a 2-cell No. 24 machine will be displayed at the Mining Show. The flow of gases, particularly radon and methane, into the mine atmosphere is a problem traditionally controlled by ventilation-dilution techniques. More recently, a preventative approach has been to seal underground surfaces with a polymeric coating to act as a barrier against the influx of dangerous gases. H However, a study by the Israel Government Research Station indicates that unless the rock surface is perfectly sealed, much of the labor to reduce interstitial gas flow is lost to the effects of barometric "breathing" from the rock pores. Previous research has reported the increased frequency of coal mine explosions during periods of barometric pressure minima,1 and the phenomena has been explained through correlation of the observed increase in mine gas concentrations during periods of low barometric pressure with the connective flow of interstitial gases from rock pores into the arsine atmosphere when pressure was actually falling.234 While changes ill barometric pressure arc rapidly transmitted to the mine atmosphere, response in the rock interstices is sluggish, momentarily creating a pressure differential between the mine atmosphere and the interstitial gases. Responding to the pressure gradient, this interstitial gas flows until pressures are equalized.

Successful explosive gas well stimulation requires a thorough understanding of explosively driven cracks under confining in-situ stresses. In a previous paper (Simha, et a1 1983) the problem of explosively driven cracks was experimentally investigated to reveal the features of crack propagation. It was observed that the explosively driven crack propagation is the result of two different but overlapping phases. The first phase involving the initiation and early time crack propagation is entirely governed by the explosively generated stress transients. The rapidly decaying stress transients then lead to the second phase of crack propagation largely controlled by the in-situ stresses. The purpose of this paper is to more fully understand the characteristics of the first phase concerning the initiation and early time propagation of explosively driven cracks. Experiments are conducted with plastic models under biaxial compression and the dynamic event is observed with a high speed multiple spark gap camera of the Cranz-Schardin type. The experimental observations are utilized to propose analytical models of crack initiation under explosive loading to aid in the design of multiple fracturing necessary for successful application of modern well stimulation techniques.

Up to now we have spoken optimistically of the many potential savings in capital and operating costs to be obtained from the selection of larger diameter and horsepower grinding mills. Such mills may well be the correct choice for one grinding plant but could be absolutely wrong for another plant. It is emphasized here that many significant factors other than the capital cost, labor, grinding media and power savings are involved in the sizing and selection of the optimum grinding circuit. The following discussion covers some of these factors and their relationship to larger mill design. The first consideration is: What is the grinding circuit supposed to do? In most instances it is one or both of the following: 1. Grind the feed material fine enough to liberate the desired minerals but with a minimum of over- grinding. Examples are preparation of ore for flotation, gravity separation, etc. 2. Grind to some pre-specified particle size or particle surface area. Examples of this are cement manufacture or the preparation of feed material for pelletizing; other examples are preparation for chemical reactions or ceramic manufacture.

IN treating carnotite ores by carbonate leaching it is often necessary to subject the ore to a prior roast. Among the advantages that may result from roasting are: 1) improvement in settling and filtering characteristics of the ore; 2) destruction of carbonaceous impurities that would otherwise contaminate the leach solution and consume carbonate reagent; and 3) substantial increase in extraction of vanadium, which is usually low when the un- roasted ore is leached. Recovery of vanadium may be an important factor in processing carnotite ores, and the fact that vanadium is usually recovered in good yield by acid leaching has often been an economic advantage over results obtained with carbonate leaching. It has been found that response of an ore to carbonate leaching, following roasting, depends primarily on its composition and on the conditions of the prior roast treatment, particularly with regard to the roasting temperature, the atmosphere maintained above the charge during roasting and cooling, and the presence of certain reagents. These factors, especially the last, virtually determine the extractions of uranium and vanadium attainable by carbonate leaching, as well as the reagent consumption on leaching, whereas adjustment of the leaching conditions has only a limited influence.

This is the second of a series of theoretical papers on the iron-carbon system. The solidus lines obtained as a result of the different methods of investigation fall naturally into three classes; namely, (1) a straight solidus originally suggested by Roozeboom and supported in the main by the work of Carpenter and Keeling, Andrew and Binnie, et al., using the thermal analysis method; (2) a slightly curved solidus obtained by Honda and his associates, using the magnetic and resistance methods: and (3) Gutowsky's solidus obtained by the Heycock and Neville method of quenching at successively higher temperatures. Although the thermodynamic method as shown in the first paper indicates that the straight solidus line is correct, no explanation has ever been advanced to account adequately for the disagreement in the shape and position of the solidus lines obtained. The nature of the solute in austenit.e is theoretically discussed. On the basis of such discussions, the data obtained by Honda and Endo on the change of magnetic susceptibility of steels with respect to temperature were critically subjected to a graphical analysis, which is shown to yield a rational explanation of the curved solidus lines.

Circle No. 2 Scintillation Counter The Scintillator from Precision Radiation Instruments, stated to have 100 times the sensitivity of the Geiger counter, is suitable for prospecting and may be operated from plane or moving vehicle. The instrument is contained in a 2-lb probe and the belt mounted battery box weighs less than 4 lb. Circle No. 3 Generators Wincharger Corp. announces development of a Speedy-Shift wheel-barrow base type attachment for model 700, 1800 and 5000 engine-generator sets.
