The authors consider the features and advantages of a new promising trend in mineral processing - column flotation. Design aerohydrodynamic and process characteristics of pilot-scale columns are studied. Optimum process parameters for various ores and operations are studied. Flow patterns in cells of various cross-sections are investigated and the relationship between Peclet criterion and specific capacity of cell is determined. On this basis options were developed for optimisation of hydrodynamic characteristics of large capacity cells, including longitudinal sectionalising of the collection zone. It is shown that advantages of high column cells (10 - 13 m) produced in the West can be implemented in a sectionalised machine of smaller height (5 - 6 m). Investigations on the influence of slurry and air bubbles flow patterns indicated that to increase flotation rate of particles of various flotabilities it is expedient to combine co- and counter-current flows of phases in a single column. The proposed designs allow tailings to repeatedly return tailings to the collection zone and alternate co- and counter-current slurry and air flows. For the first time columns with alternating slurry flows (combination of co- and counter-current flows) are developed and commercialised. Unique multi-sectional cells having a number of essential advantages compared to monocells are developed. Design features of the cell allow: implementation of different flotation process flowsheets in a single unit, improved beneficiation process results, reduced specific power requirement, and elimination of sludging of the aerator and cell bottom part. Operational problems restricting introduction of column cells are connected with the aeration unit. The new cells are supplied with pneumohydraulic and stepped airlift spargers, allowing control of bubble size distribution with a service life of not less than three years. Successful operation of the new generation of columns with cell volumes of 15, 25, 40, and 80 cu m and the height of 5 - 6 m in copper, molybdenum, antimony, tungsten and nickel ores and coal slurry processing at different plants in this country illustrated their considerable process and operational advantages and verified the proposed options and relationships. A simulation technique of the flotation process and models for the solution of various problems are developed. A modular model of column flotation is constructed taking into account the kinetic relationship of the process and the hydrodynamic regime in the cell. Based on this, a technique of calculating the column parameters based on laboratory tests is developed (scaling-up), and applied for calculating the design of commercial-scale columns is developed.

Many caving mines use numerical flow models to simulate mine production, forecast recovered ore grades and optimise the draw strategy. In sublevel caving (SLC) mines, the effects of blasting and fragmentation at an individual ring scale generally cannot be included in these models. Previous attempts to use results from marker recovery trials to calibrate numerical flow models have been limited due to difficulties in accounting for blasting effects at a ring scale. This paper outlines how an empirical criterion for blasting and fragmentation was used to attribute variable flow properties into a numerical flow model based on the blast design and modelled fragmentation. The flow model was then validated using data from a number of full scale marker recovery experiments. The result of this approach was a significant improvement in forecast accuracy when compared against the same modelled cave marker recovery without the inclusion of these blasting effects. Improvements in the flow model are currently being adopted within the mine scale model to further improve the accuracy of grade forecasting, optimise the draw strategy and increase net present value. The integrated modelling approach is also being used to simulate the effects of different drill and blast designs on cave recovery. It is suggested that, if implemented, the technique would lead to improved blast designs in other SLC mines, increase the value of marker trial data and reduce costs associated with large scale blast design trials.CITATION:Campbell, A D and Power, G R, 2017. In 2005, El Teniente mine began preconditioning the primary rock mass by hydraulic fracturing (HF). The major perceived benefits of this process are a decrease in the magnitude of the expected maximum seismic event and improved cave propagation. In addition, HF has resulted in new information on the propagation pressures of each fracture. Previous studies have attempted to relate propagation pressure to minor principal stress or confining stress.Considering the spatial continuity of propagation pressure and the significant quantity of collected data since the incorporation of the HF technique, minimum requirements for geostatistical modelling have been reached, permitting robust estimates inside the representative volume with acceptable errors (Cornejo, Muñoz and Rojas, 2012; Cornejo and Landeros, 2013). These results are then used to identify zones with higher magnitudes, which are mostly related to more complex geotechnical zones (intrusive and major faults) and caving singularities, making it possible to estimate the spatial extension of these zones.Finally, these results are integrated with other geomechanics aspects to support risk analysis of the mining plan.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Landeros, P, Benado, D, Caviedes, C and Pinochet, A, 2016. Risk and dispute resolution are linked. Dispute resolution techniques are brought to bear on a dispute - which is an outcome of a risk being wholly or partially realised. There has been an increasing awareness by business of risk as a component of doing business. There is an accompanying awareness of the need to manage risk - including legal risk. Many companies have undertaken a systematic review of their potential risks and endeavoured to put in place systems to help to avoid or manage risks. A legal risk management program will not prevent disputes arising. However, such a program should prescribe how that dispute will be managed. The management of the dispute will involve consideration of the dispute resolution procedure to be adopted. The most appropriate processes will take into account the practical, personal and commercial considerations surrounding the dispute and be as efficient, cost-effective and user friendly as achievable in the circumstances for the benefit of all the parties. Carrying on business in South East Asia, whether as an explorer or a mining operator, brings additional considerations to bear in legal risk management and the dispute resolution process. A significantly different perspective is required due to the varying nature of the legal systems in many South East Asian jurisdictions. These jurisdictions often have relative uncertainty as to the law. This impacts on the dispute resolution processes and also raises further timing and cost issues. The authors contend that this is all the more reason to endeavour, as practically as possible, to adopt a legal risk management and dispute resolution profile which will provide business with the greatest prospects of maintaining control of the dispute resolution process. This presents a greater chance of a successful outcome to the dispute. In these times of increasing pressures on profitability because of low mineral prices, all costs of a minerals business are being reviewed. In such times, a significant legal dispute may have even greater potential to adversely impact on the companies concerned, together with the careers of the people involved. In this paper possible approaches to managing disputes and a case study a legal dispute in which Freehill Hollingdale and Page were involved are discussed. The dispute concerned an international mining company developing a gold mine in Indonesia and one of its contractors in Indonesia. Described is how that dispute was resolved. This achieved a very satisfactory result for the client - all things considered. Given the æadditionalÆ problems associated with ascertainment and enforcement of ærightsÆ in South East Asia, the longer the parties can retain control over their dispute the better off they will be. For this reason, the authors set out in this paper the main additional dispute resolution tools available - that are appropriate for use throughout South East Asia.

A 3-D computerised model of the southern part of Greymouth Coal Limited's Coal Mining Licence area has recently been completed. This model, and associated 3-D CAD tools, has/is being used to optimise drillhole spacing during exploratory data collection and as a visualisation and interpretation aid. This model will also provide the basis for future mine planning, with the emphasis on an optimal mine outline to maximise safety and profitable coal extraction. Previous use of computer techniques was restricted to drillhole database entry, storage and log production. Recently a 3-D geological/structural model was created for the Southern Rapahoe Sector of the Greymouth Coalfield. Geostatistical analysis of the database highlights the inadequacy of the present drillhole spacing for preliminary mine planning. The sparsity of hard data at depth results in a lower level of confidence in the accuracy of the 3-D model. Nevertheless, the model and 3-D CAD techniques has been used to target and refine ongoing resource evaluation, and provides the basis for initial reserves. In the future the geologic model will be used as the basis for preliminary and later (optimal) mine planning. It is also expected to accommodate other forms of data input in seam drilling and seismic. Development of the 3-D computer model was a first in the Greymouth Coalfield and highlights both the use of computerised techniques for resource evaluation and mining, and the effects of wide spaced drillhole data on model accuracy. The computer will continue to provide the most efficient and cost effective tool for optimal resource evaluation and mine planning as Greymouth Coal Limited moves from feasibility/mine planning to full production. The increased use of computer-based methods for mine planning should be seen as part of 'The Changing Face of West Coast Mining' in line with the theme of this Conference.

The Central Maratoto Valley in the Coromandel Peninsula contains a sequence of veins in pervasively altered dacite + andesites of the Waipupu Formation. We recognise at least eight different vein types: (1) pyrite stringers, (2) quartz + carbonate veins, (3) crystalline quartz veins, (4) carbonate veins, (5) chlorite + carbonate veins, (6) siderite veinlets, (7) siderite + carbonate veins and (8) carbonate + pyrite veins. The overall temporal trend of the veins is from early pyrite to quartz and then to late carbonate veins. Carbonate veins and pyrite stringers both form planar and irregular veins, whereas some carbonate veins have diffuse contacts with the wall rock. Gold and base metal sulphides are associated with some of the quartz + carbonate veins. Textures within the veins reflect open space filling and multi-phase reopening. A partial record of hydrothermal activity has been preserved by vein crosscutting relationships, hydrothermal alteration minerals and fluid inclusions. Hydrothermal alteration minerals display zonation from south to north. The alteration increases from unaltered to weak propylitic alteration of andesite in the south (MVRCDC1), to sericitic alteration of andesite and dacite in the north (MVRCDC3). The alteration assemblage is dominantly sericitic, with no adularia present, drawing parallels to the Thames region where there is no adularia.

Western New Zealand can be regarded as a rifted continuation of eastern Australia. Detailed studies of units previously considered to have trans-Tasman correlations are being undertaken within the FRST Programme Mineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZ to test specific connections, and thus add to the exploration framework of NZ. Correlation of two major episodes of granitic magmatism are currently being investigated. These represent the oldest (mid Paleozoic) and youngest (Early Cretaceous) magmatic events that conjoined Australia and New Zealand are believed to have in common.

Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent. The optimisation of a mining operation requires precise ore grade control, metallurgical accounting, and laboratory sampling protocols, which are implemented by using accurate and flawless sampling systems. Good sampling practices, and sampling technologies in these fields have been historically poor and too many existing sampling systems available on the market are flawed in many ways. This is mainly the result of a poor understanding of the Sampling Theory, and the natural result of international standards on sampling that fail to present the Sampling Theory in a logical way, that still promote non-probabilistic sampling, and that fail to address the important details that make a correct sampling system. Many standards barely mention the Sampling Theory in appendices when it should be clearly the main body of a reliable standard on sampling. As a result, many standards show only little expertise in the Sampling Theory. Conventional statistics should only be a scientific tool for the Sampling Theory to reach its height, which has always been well understood by its creators. Conventional statistics can indeed be addressed in appendices of standards in sampling, but not the other way around. Until the Sampling Theory is recognised as the main body of a standard on sampling, incorrect sampling technologies will plague the market, and make it impossible for mining operations to optimise their mining and metallurgical processes. This paper makes a short list of correct new sampling technologies that have been created with respect to the principles taught in the Sampling Theory. Also, suggestions are presented to create better international standards on sampling, which would provide a stronger incentive for manufacturers to build correct sampling systems, and for engineering firms to install only sampling systems that respect the rules of sampling correctness listed in the Sampling Theory.

Column Bioleaching of a Low-Grade Nickel-Bearing Sulfide Ore Yellow Mountain Deposit belonging to GobiMin Inc is located in the Chinese Tianshan and Altay orogenic belts, Hami, Xinjiang Province, NW China. Indicated Mineral Resources of its reserve are estimated at 12 million tonnes averaging 0.40 per cent nickel. Mineralogical examination and chemical analysis indicated that the Yellow Mountain ore is a type of high Fe, low Mg and low Ni sulfide ore: the main sulfide minerals are ~8.0 per cent pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS), ~1.0 per cent pentlandite ((Fe, Ni)9S8), ~0.6 per cent chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~0.5 per cent pyrite (FeS2), and ~0.2 per cent violarite((Fe, Ni)3S4); the main gangue minerals are ~48 per cent olivine, ~28 per cent antigorite, ~3 per cent chlorite, ~2 per cent talc, ~2 per cent tremolite, and~1.5 per cent magnetite; the chemical analysis of the ore sample are Ni 0.40 per cent, Co 0.016 per cent, Cu 0.24 per cent, Fe 12.4 per cent, S 5.6 per cent, MgO 9.6 per cent, CaO 1.80 per cent, SiO2 48.5 per cent and Al2O3 10.3 per cent. Preliminary results of the shake flask test showed that pyrrhotite is easily leached and the high concentration of ferric iron would hamper the growth of bacteria which will bring a negative impact on the bioleaching conversely. This work aims to set up a method to prevent the negative impact of the ferric ion on the bioleaching of the ore. Two method were combined to prevent the negative impact of the ferric ion, they are adaptation of the mixed bacteria to iron ion and bleeding the off-solution periodically to control the levels of iron ion (depending on the tolerance of the microorganisms to the ferric ion) in the leaching solution. Using a mixed mesophiles composed of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans under room temperature, a nickel recovery of 93 per cent and a cobalt recovery of 85 per cent were achieved in 280 days column bioleaching process with an average nickel concentration in the leaching solution of 2.6 g/L. The results showed that the negative effect of the ferric ion can be successfully controlled and the nickel can be bioleached successfully from theYellow Mountain ore.

During an eight month period, January to August 1978, nine bore holes were drilled in the Mikonui River gravels. On account of two rebores required from near bottom, the number of bores is in effect 11. Just on 1300 feet were drilled with an average depth of 120 feet. Depth varied from 102 feet to 133 feet. Penetration on average per hole value, varied from 7.4 to 16.4 feet per day. Gold values were even more erratic. Drill rig used was the Keystone churn drill manufactured locally by the Dispatch Foundary. It is skid mounted and requires a crew of two persons.

Some crystal chemical properties of several apatites from Brazilian deposits and occurrences were determined; the samples had different origins (igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary). The aim was to establish relationships to their froth flotabilities behaviour. Detailed X-ray diffraction studies were carried out, to determine precisely the unit cell parameters and the degrees of crystallinity of the apatite samples. A thorough chemical analysis of these minerals was also conducted. Microflotation studies were carried out, using sodium oleate and dodecylammonium chloride as collectors. The crystallinity levels were determined for all samples studied, with the establishment of a crystallinity index, which varied from 10.0 to 4.5, on a normalised scale. A marked dependence was observed between this crystallinity sequence and flotability; for both collectors, flotability dropped drastically for crystallinity indices lower than 8.0. Also, the low crystallinity apatites showed a decrease in floatability, for longer conditioning times.

Prefeasibility planning and cost estimation of conveyor systems has historically been undertaken by comparing fixed plant transport requirements to that of similar systems in service. This paper describes the development of a prefeasibility conveyor technical design and cost estimation application using Microsoft Excel Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) platform. The application tool known as D-Convey (Dachshund Convey) was developed with the goal enabling the end user:- to develop a technical model for conceptualised conveyor systems,- to perform economic analysis on the developed technical model, and - to conduct a comparative and risk analysis.An Excel VBA based platform was utilised to draw upon both the analytical and graphical capabilities of a spreadsheet. Some of the features of D-Convey system include a revolutionary dynamic graphical help system, known as the 'information pane' in lieu of traditional help files as well as the use of familiar graphical user interface elements such as the MS Office 2007 task ribbon. The D-Convey system incorporates material database allowing for mass handling prefeasibility estimation in other industries; it has been validated at a local quarry.

Neither the copper orebodies nor the zinc-lead-silver orebodies at Mount Isa were formed syntectonically as has been claimed for the last 20 and 10 years respectively. Both orebody types were cogenetic, coeval, and formed early during the sedimentation and diagenesis of the host formation. The copper orebodies are interpreted as having formed diagenetically at hand specimen scale, syngenetically at formation scale. The zinc-lead-silver orebodies are interpreted as having formed primarily by sedimentary means at both hand specimen and formation scales.

Tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits are under-represented in Australia’s inventory of known resources of this deposit type, relative to regions globally with comparable geology. To support discovery of major new deposits, a continental scale analysis of Australia’s potential for tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits is being undertaken. The analysis applies a mineral systems approach to map the four essential components of the ore-forming systems:1. sources of ore constituents2. crustal and mantle lithospheric architecture3. energy sources or drivers of the ore-forming systems4. gradients in ore depositional physico-chemical parameters.The results reveal several regions of Australia with potential for discovery of large tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits, mostly around the margins of Archean and Proterozoic lithospheric blocks. In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink–?float analysis. Using traditional sink–float method it is not possible to sample and automatically measure. This fact, as well as time, cost and safety aspects, as well as required and manageable sample size of the sink–float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria. This is especially important as performance levels of separator plants can be maximised if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes available in time. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilises at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy X-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy X-ray transmission and image processing.If used as a standard laboratory device the continuous build-up of the washability curve allows to evaluate the statistical significance of the sample size during measurement.The measuring method can even be improved if it is combined with an automatic sampling system that feeds a continuous and representative particle stream to the analyser. Then the value of the collected data increases considerably since the washability data are additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The washability curve can be derived and is continuously updated based on the particles measured during the past time interval. Older curves and results are stored in a database and can be retrieved for later reference. This technology now enables automated sampling and integrated automated measurement, which was previously not possible.This incorporation of an automated washability monitor at a representative sample gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. Grinding and Flowing Investigation on Dry Stirred Ball Milling in Order to Determine the Influence of Grinding Aids Huge difficulties of the great ultra fine ground material production in dry stirred ball mill are the cohesion and agglomeration of the particles. During grinding the material stick on the grinding wall and the grinding media furthermore the grinds start cohere, making aggregation and agglomeration to appear. Due to these effects the particle size will not decrease after a certain value during grinding and the energy demand increases significantly. According to experience on fine grinding in ball mill, it is well known that these effects can be reduced with the use of grinding aids. The influence of grinding aids has three different effects: due to the adsorption strength reduction (Rebinder effect) the grinding resistance of the material decreases; the surface energy diminishes and the agglomeration liability decreases; and the flow properties of material improve. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow properties of fine grinds and the effect of grinding aids on flow properties in case of dry stirred ball milling. In addition, the influence of grinding aids was investigated based on the particle size distribution and specific surface area of grinds and the specific energy demand of grinding. The examinations were carried out with three different model materials (limestone, clinker, quartz) using the usually applied grinding aid. The flow properties were measured by the Jenike shear cell; the particle size distribution and specific surface area were measured by laser particle size analyser (Fritsch Analysette 22), grinding energy demand was measured with microcomputer controlled digital energy meter. It can be said that under certain measuring circumstances the influence of grinding aid on flow properties can be demonstrated by Jenike shear cell, so the grinding result is in correlation with the flow properties of grind.

Detrital gold in the Greymouth-Hokitika area has been won from: (a) gravel of the Pliocene Old Man Group, (b) glacial outwash gravel of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (c) raised shoreline deposits of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (d) deposits resulting from the erosion of (a) to (c). The source of the gold was probably widely dispersed quartz veins in great thicknesses of greywacke and low-grade schist eroded from east of the Alpine Fault, with a contribution from veins in Greenland Group greywacke in the south. At times of high interglacial and post-glacial sea level, gold was concentrated along marine shorelines, and subsequent progressive uplift has resulted in a set of sub-parallel beach leads up to 100 m above present sea level. During glaciations, gold was concentrated in outwash streams close to moraines, especially where ice forming one moraine penetrated and destroyed an older one. Worked deposits in the Old Man Group may also be associated with glaciation. Apart from workings that are essentially extensions of past workings, significant new prospects may depend on inferences as to where prospective deposits are completely obscured by younger ones.

There has been a strong trend over the past decade in hard rock mines towards the use of very high powered auxiliary (or secondary) fans; in many mines, the installed power for the secondary ventilation system now exceeds that of the primary ventilation system. This also reflects the trend to use two-stage auxiliary fans pushing air into a single ‘trunk’ duct that in turn splits into multiple branches with multiple outlets feeding multiple workplaces. This often produces a poor result in terms of face flows due to the high resistance, high leakage and badly managed duct outlets, as well as high fan capital and operating (power) costs, which in turn also results in a higher cost for the underground power reticulation/distribution systems. This paper explores the reasons why this trend exists and what ventilation practitioners can do to utilise less expensive systems that simultaneously deliver better workplace conditions.
