The Otago and Southland lignite deposits represent by far the largest known fossil energy resources in New Zealand. Despite their size they have remained virtually untouched since exploration in the 1970s and 1980s defined their extent. In total there is an estimated 10.9 billion tonnes of lignite in 13 defined fields in Otago and Southland. Much of the exploration work only targeted seams at shallow depth and it is highly probable that there are further resources at depth in the fields that have been explored to date.   L&M Lignite Limited (L&M) holds exploration permits over a number of lignite deposits and is currently engaged in pre-feasibility studies to investigate the potential of the lignites for gasification. L&M is focussing its studies on the Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposits. Coal quality in these deposits, particularly Ashers-Waituna, is highly suitable for gasification. In total the two deposits contain 1647 Mt of potentially recoverable lignite. L&M has engaged a variety of consultants to progress this project. The Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposit databases have been re-evaluated and the resources remodelled. Further drilling has been carried out and the coal quality database has been expanded. The baseline project is to develop a mine to feed a plant that will produce liquids, specifically low-sulphur diesel and naptha, using the Fischer-Tropsch process. The project anticipates a staged development of 10 000 barrel per day units, each requiring mining at the rate of 12 700 tonnes of lignite per day. The production of other products including ammonia-urea, methanol, hydrogen and electric power is also under study.

At Neavesville gold-silver (electrum) mineralisation occurs in steeply-dipping zones of intense fracturing, brecciation and quartz veining within rhyolitic pyroclastics, carbohaceous shales and andesites. Hydrothermal alteration extends over an area of greater than 3 by 1.5 km. In rhyolitic tuffs, highly silicified zones containing quartz-adularia-illite assemblages are flanked by less silicified assemblages composed of albite, illite-montmorillonite and chlorite. The mineralogy and sequence of alteration are comparable with the alteration zones which envelop the steam-producing fissures of the active Wairakei and Broadlands geothermal fields. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from five fissure veins in the Neavesville field show maximum homogenisation temperatures ranging from 220 - 260¦C and salinities of 0.0 - 1.1 wt per cent NaCl equivalent, which cover a similar range to actual measured temperatures and salinities in geothermal fluids at Wairakei and Broadlands. The age of the rhyolitic pyroclastics and related alteration and mineralisation is probably Pliocene and Neavesville therefore represents a fossil geothermal system. The intensely fractured zones containing the gold-silver mineralisation were probably produced by hydraulic fracturing generated by accumulation under pressure of hydrothermal fluid in blind fault zones. Study of fluid inclusions indicates that hydrothermal quartz associated with electrum was deposited under boiling conditions. High grade electrum mineralisation at Graces workings appears to be localised by reaction of hydrothermal fluid with sedimentary marcasite in black shale.

Comparing Energy Efficiency of Multi-Pass High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) Circuits With increased emphasis on reducing costs and carbon emissions in mineral processing, it is becoming essential to employ the most efficient comminution devices and to use them to maximum effect. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are considered highly efficient compared with other devices, however their relative efficiency in multi-HPGR circuits is less well understood. A series of comminution tests was carried out to evaluate three multi-pass HPGR circuits and a jaw crusher-ball mill circuit. Combinations of HPGR units (1.0 m and 0.25 m diameter), jaw crushers and Bond ball mills were used to grind a 32 mm top size porphyry copper feed (BBWI = 12.1) to a product P80 size of about 150 ¦m. Up to three passes of HPGR were used in each circuit, with energy measurement and size analysis at each point in the comminution process. The energy efficiencies of individual comminution stages and of the overall circuits were quantified and evaluated using three different approaches. The operating work index method for comparing comminution energy efficiency underestimated HPGR performance due to the large amount of fines generated. The -75 ¦m efficiency factor and F50/P50 reduction ratio interpolation methods both give a fairer measure because they better take into account the amount of fines generated by HPGR. The results show that the relative comminution efficiencies of the three multi-pass HPGR circuits tested differ by as much as 22%, providing insights as how to best employ HPGR in a comminution circuit. The most energy efficient of the circuits tested was a three-pass HPGR circuit with a 1.0 m diameter roll on the first pass in closed circuit with an 8 mm screen followed by a second and third pass in a 0.25 m roll.

Sulfide chimney samples collected during the 1998 - 1999 R/V Atlantis û DSV Alvin 3 - 30 research cruise have been examined and classified into four types, based on common characteristics. Chimney morphology is the most important characteristic and resulted in the following groups: 1. flutes, 2. cones, 3. wide-flats, and 4. beehives. Other characteristics resulted in the classification of subgroups within the flute, cone and wide-flat groups. The combination of characteristics, including; the presence of an orifice, internal chimney fabrics, wall thickness, extent of weathering, and the presence of Alvinella worm casts, enable evolutionary trends between the different chimneys types to be established. These trends indicate that with time, flutes evolve from immature zoned chimneys with a central orifice and smooth thin-walls, into cone chimneys with thick walls and massive fabrics which have their orifices infilled by massive sulfides, and a rough exterior. Repeated mineralisation within, cones may result in the formation of wide-flat chimneys. Beehive chimneys can form at any time during chimney growth.

The early development patterns of both Australia and New Zealand were substantially in parallel and both were heavily indebted to gold mining for, providing the stimulus to growth. However, since the mining boom, of 1895 - 1899, the mining sector in New Zealand has progressively declined, while in Australia it has assumed an increasing importance in the economy. The continued dominance of minerals in Australian trade, and the fact that eight out of the top ten companies in Australia are directly involved in mineral exploration and production, has strongly influenced government and public attitude's to the minerals sector. Although the legal framework of mining and exploration Acts and Regulations are similar it is in, the method of administration, particularly in regard to exploration and prospecting licences, that the gulf across, the Tasman is apparent. Despite the relative ease of application and granting of licences in Australia, in the more settled south eastern part of the continent we are finding more and more land is being zoned unavailable for exploration. In the remote areas, the Aboriginals now control nearly ten per cent of the land area of Australia, virtually with drawing that portion from exploration. The concept of 'Australianisation' has softened a hardening attitude against foreign investment in mining on the part of the bureaucracy. This anti-mining attitude is fortunately, not shared by the public, and we can but hope that the will of the Australian people can filter through to our masters in Canberra, and ease the rapid increase in the number of regulatory bodies which does so much to inhibit the normal conduct of business. The delays caused by interminable hearings and committee investigations all cost money. This cost can only rebound back on the end consumer, who after all is a voter.

An Innovative Process for Comprehensive Utilisation of Clay-Vanadium Ores By adopting conventional processing technologies such as flotation, gravity concentration, and magnetic separation, it is difficult to enrich vanadium mineral effectively. At present, vanadium extraction process usually has not the mineral processing enrichment procedure, but rather uses direct hydrometallurgical process: roasting - leaching - precipitating vanadium for obtaining high quality V2O5 product. But it results in problems, for instance, high consume of auxiliary materials like acid and alkali, serious pollution and high cost of vanadium extraction. In the project study on the ore of a certain clay vanadium mineral, by adopting the test process: scrubbing raw ore with reagents added in - dispersing and segregating with reagents - grading enrichment, vanadium concentrate product with higher grade was made by virtue of reagent's selective inhibiting, and the purpose of upgrading the raw material used for vanadium extraction with hydrometallurgical process is achieved. The process technology obtained from project study features simple process structure, low equipment investment, low cost of mineral processing and pollution-free to environment. It provides high efficient and practical technology for the comprehensive utilisation of clay vanadium mineral, and has a prominent prospect for its popularisation and application.

The objective of the draw strategy in a caving mine is to maximise economic return by minimising waste dilution3 and maximising ore recovery4. The draw strategy must also include suitable controls for air blast and mud rush hazards and is highly constrained until continuous cave propagation has been achieved. This paper details a three-year project at the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), which used cave flow simulation software to develop a draw strategy that increased the mine value by 32 per cent.Dilution and ore loss can be significant in sublevel cave (SLC) operations and result in poor recovery and considerable economic losses. To minimise dilution and ore loss, cellular automata software was used to simulate cave flow over the mine life. The optimisation project required mining footprints for various cut-off grades to be developed. Draw strategies for each mine footprint were then generated using a range of shut-off grades. Economic assessment of each scenario was then conducted to determine the mine footprint and corresponding draw strategy that generated the highest NPV (net present value). The iterative simulation process was improved by developing automated software functions in the flow modelling software to reduce time taken to generate and assess life-of-mine (LOM) draw strategy scenarios.In addition to improving the NPV of the mine, the optimisation project also enabled a decrease in the mine cut-off grade which increased the ore reserve and extended the mine life. Overall, an iterative process of mine planning, cave simulation, economic evaluation and geotechnical analysis was used to significantly increase the economic return of the SLC whilst ensuring caving risks were controlled to an acceptable level.CITATION:Campbell, A D and Power, G R, 2016. The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited. The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal.   The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (i.e. underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.

A fundamental component of grade control at Tarmoola Mine has been the monitoring of assaying through quality assurance programs. The programs have concentrated on issues related to accuracy and precision of leachwell and fire assay techniques, sample preparation and grade variability within a sample. An outcome of monitoring has been identification of shortcomings in the application of assaying techniques to Tarmoola ore types that contain coarse particulate gold. Leachwell has shown satisfactory precision since introduction as the primary assay technique in October 1998 but leachwell accuracy and recovery through comparison with fire assay techniques has identified bias. A bias toward higher fire assays in grades above 2 g/t invoked an investigation into the cause of the discrepancy between leachwell and fire assay. Testwork evaluated Leachwell assay recovery by varying leach time duration, which showed that by increasing the leach time improved recovery significantly. Monitoring of leachwell against fire assay had shown that a leachwell (200 g) with a one hour leach has under-called grade when compared with fire assay by up to 18 per cent, on average, for Tarmoola ore types. Alternatively, optimisation of the leachwell assaying technique using a 200 g pulp and a two hour leach has returned, on average, higher assays than fire assay by up to eight per cent. Testwork on screen fire assays, duplicate assays and fire assay to extinction has demonstrated assay variability associated with coarse, particulate gold. The variability and distribution of gold in Tarmoola ore types has emphasised the importance of high quality sample preparation for leachwell assaying to ensure liberation of gold to leaching solutions. Assay quality assurance protocols are vital to assay data integrity and enable confidence in delineation of ore-waste boundaries and provide early recognition of problematic assaying periods and isolation of grade control practices, which depart from performance standards critical to the operation.

Tunnels are being built around the world using TBMs and prefabricated segments or in situ concrete as linings. Clients demand high quality of these linings to guarantee a long-term stability and density of the tunnels. This paper describes the development and the use of segmental lining systems, including joints, important design criteria, installation procedures, possible mistakes and consequences, repair works and final results for different sites in Europe and around the world. The experience on these sites shows that damages may occur, if some essential aspects are not considered. These aspects include:parameters of the TBMs and back-up equipment such as fixation of jacking rams, movement of the back-up on the lining or ring reformer;parameters of the segments such as quality of moulds, quantity of reinforcement or structure of the joints; andparameters of the tunnel drive such as advance rate, ring-gap grouting or experience of the tunnel crew.All these aspects have to be considered very carefully in detail to get a good lining accepted in total.

Recent lignite investigations indicate their potential as a strategic long-term fuel resource. This potential however would be determined not only by lignite quantity and quality, but also by economic, physical and social resources required to support it. The following discussion uses the example of a typical lignite mining operation to review the major resource requirements. While recognising that the implications of supplying those resources may be as important as their actual existence, this paper has purposely omitted such discussion as this will be one of the main target areas for the next phase of investigations.

Grey River Gold Mining Ltd commenced dredging alluvial flats in the Grey River Valley in 1989. Previous drilling indicated over 100 million cubic metres of gravels with some 90 per cent of the gold in the bottom seven metres. The dredge built by Rahco, Spokane, was innovative in a number of aspects but particularly in the fact that a separate ladder with a cutter and pump was used to strip the overburden and a bucketline to mine the gold bearing wash below. Metallurgical studies and exploration were initiated when the project commenced. Leasing and environmental considerations were investigated and action taken. While progress is being made, the operation at this stage is not meeting required production and performance. Main problems have been with the stripping system and wear.

Block caving has been the favoured mining method for large underground hard rock mines for the last few decades. The orebody must be of a size large enough to cave and generally amenable to a caving method. Typically, these mines ranged from 15 000 to 50 000 tonnes per day (50 kt/d) and have been some of the largest and most productive underground mines in the world.Now mining companies, in the quest for improved shareholder return, are looking for higher production rates from new underground mines. Whether a ‘Greenfields’ development, or a replacement for ageing large open pit mines, minimising capital and maximising production has been a focus of project teams. These new block cave mines are what have become known as ‘super caves’. These caves range from 80 kt/d to over 150 kt/d and are being planned or constructed by several major mining companies including Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, Newcrest and Rio Tinto.Issues facing these super caves include high initial capital costs, very long development periods and significant technical challenges. These issues tend to make it difficult to present an attractive business case for such a project.This paper will discuss some of the potential benefits as well as the technical challenges and risks of operating a mine with the block or panel caving method at these very high tonnage rates. Considerations including geotechnical conditions, development rates, panel widths and ore column heights are discussed. The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 2.6 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore annually from sub level open stopes of which approximately 40% comes from the narrow Racecourse orebodies below 15 level.Geologically the stoping environment is complicated by highly fissile shale hangingwalls and below 17 level by a high stress regime.The realization that major hangingwall failures and generally poor ground conditions could lead to serious dilution problems, and ultimately production shortfalls, prompted investigations into the use of low strength explosives.

Systems such as Davey Bickford’s Daveytronic® SP blast initiation system and electronic detonators have been an integral part of drill and blast activities in Australia for over a decade, with the significant benefits of electronic blasting well documented. Since 2010 the Multiblast feature has been commercially available, which enables eight individual blast patterns (up to 1500 detonators each) to be blasted in the same firing window. Synchroblast has been in active operation since 2012, which allows a blast of up to 4500 detonators – either as a single blast pattern, or several smaller adjacent blast patterns – to be reliably initiated.Multiblast manages blasts separately but concurrently, allowing all blasts to conduct prefiring checks simultaneously from the firing point utilising only one remote blasting unit. Each blast can be selected and fired individually, in a sequence determined by the operator by scrolling through the colour display. Synchroblast automatically detects the blasting configuration, and manages all detonators as a single blast pattern. This simplifies the design and blasting processes for the mining operation.Multiblast and Synchroblast are routinely employed throughout Australia and globally in both open cut and underground operations, enabling optimal productivity due to increased blast volume and reduced operational downtime associated with blasting events.A number of case studies will be presented in this paper, detailing various mining operations that are consistently blasting in excess of 2500 detonators per blasting event as a part of standard drill and blast operations. Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements commenced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and compared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise cleanup effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Programmable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

There is a wide spectrum of learning needed in the development of these explorationists: the technical and conceptual skills to carry out exploration efficiently, the professional and managerial skills to apply the exploration in the work situation, the personal attributes required to manage their exploration effectively, and a company organisation that allows them to learn and use these skills and attributes.
