Underground mine planning requires an optimal stope layout as a prerequisite for the definition of an optimal production schedule. The procedure to generate an optimal stope layout considers an orebody model and economic parameters as inputs. It evaluates all possible combinations of mining blocks and creates a set of stopes by satisfying the physical mining and geotechnical constraints. Thus, the procedure is computationally complex, and generating a solution to the problem is a challenge. This paper presents an implementation of a new heuristic algorithm that solves the stope layout problem. In two case studies, the algorithm achieves 11.2 per cent and 22.5 per cent superior solutions to the industrially available maximum value neighbourhood approach.CITATION:Sandanayake, D S S, Topal, E and Asad, M W A, 2014. The decline of ore grades on land, increasing demand and high prices for various minerals have led to an increased interest in mining the deep ocean sea floor. The potential deep ocean reserves are vast and in some circumstances the grades are high enough to consider mining. However, the consequences of such mining are as yet uncertain. This paper will present the results of a comparative assessment of life cycle impacts of deep ocean minerals. Two alternative extraction technologies from different deep ocean resource types were examined and key commodities are considered. Initial results indicate that the energy requirements will be higher than the average land-based resources, but may fall within the range of the deepest terrestrial mines.CITATION:McLellan, B C, 2015. This paper discusses the method and results of an options study into selection of the optimal form for a 130 m high tailings/water retaining dam, located in a region of high seismicity in central Iran. The proposed dam is part of a planned expansion project for Sarcheshmeh Copper Mine (SCM), which after construction will provide 550 million tonnes of additional tailings storage over the next 27 years. Geotechnical investigation at the proposed site indicated that adequate suitable low permeability materials (i.e. clay) were not available in the immediate vicinity of the dam site and would need to be imported from a distance of well over 10 km (direct). Given the magnitude of the estimated quantity of material and construction cost it was considered prudent to compare the cost of alternative dam design options for the proposed storage. A total of five dam design options are considered including a conventional rockfill embankment dam with an upstream sloping earth core (ECRD), a geomembrane face rockfill embankment dam (GFRD), a sloping asphalt core rockfill embankment dam (ACRD), a roller compacted concrete dam (RCCD), and a filter rockfill embankment dam for tailings storage together with a separate smaller earthfill core rockfill dam (ECRD) located downstream for storage of decant water. The Gladstone region, as one of the most industrially intense regions in Australia, uses significant quantities of fresh water. Awoonga Dam, situated on the Boyne River, is the only major source of water in the region. The current typical annual usage is 53 GL (Porteous, 2006) and approximately 80 per cent of the water is used by heavy industry (Gladstone Area Water Board, 2004). Until relatively recently, there has been ready and easy access to raw water for industrial use. The recent drought, which resulted in severe water restrictions in 2002 and 2003, emphasised the importance of water for a dominant industrial region like Gladstone. Although now in the process of changing, the typical contractual arrangements in the past have provided little financial incentive for efficient water use. From research undertaken on potential water reuse opportunities, several key questions have emerged related to water management in an industrial region such as Gladstone. This paper highlights these key questions, presents findings from recent regional strategies and assesses the potential for water reuse. Even though there is no clear-cut financial incentive for reusing water, there could be stronger regional and risk mitigation drivers for doing so. Initiatives to incorporate adaptive capacity through collaborative industrial synergies would allow for robustness and resilience in water security, leading to long-term sustainable water management across the Gladstone region.

Every mine will close! Charting a profitable course through mine operations to acceptable mine completion requires that risk and opportunity management planning of the mine life begin as early as possible in the life cycle. Management targets and metrics are required to identify and navigate the course to successful mine completion based on economic, social and environmental criteria. This paper outlines the application of The Metrics NavigatorÖ principles to the life cycle of a mine site. In general, metrics are required to make key strategic ideas apparent, transforming those ideas into a manageable set of quantitative measures that guide communication and decision making. For example, the chemical industry has established metrics that focus on the life cycle impacts of its products and eco-efficiency of their processes. Other industry sectors have focused attention on workplace and community well-being outcomes. These management metrics are necessarily organisation-specific, aligned to stakeholdersÆ expectations and the strategic outcomes sought, as well as the cause-and-effect relationships underlying key issues. Recently, the Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI), a consortium of multi-national companies, developed The Metrics NavigatorÖ. The guidance document provides a structured process for assessing and developing metrics for key environmental, social, and economic issues based on business and stakeholder perspectives. It incorporates best practices learned from the chemical and other industry sectors and has since been applied to develop metrics that guide life cycle strategies. The paper examines how the life cycle of a mine site could benefit from experiences in other industry sectors where sustainability metrics have guided strategy. It considers the potential application of The Metrics NavigatorÖ process to the life cycle of a hypothetical Australian mine site using the processes that have been successful in other industry sectors.

The Eucla Basin in southern Australia is emerging as an important global source of zircon from heavy mineral sands. Understanding the geological evolution of the basin and movement of heavy minerals down peripheral paleovalleys and along paleocoastlines is essential to effectively refine exploration strategies for heavy minerals in the basin. Integration of geoscientific datasets in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment has proved to be effective in reconstructing depositional environments along the Cenozoic basin margin and in tracing the buried paleorivers that once drained broad areas of the Archean-Paleoproterozoic Yilgarn and Gawler cratons, the dominantly Mesoproterozoic Musgrave and Albany-Fraser Provinces, and the Neoproterozoic-Early Paleozoic Officer Basin. Sea level highstands during the late Middle Eocene (39 - 36 Ma) are associated with formation of the Ooldea coastal barrier complex and the zircon-rich heavy mineral deposits at Jacinth, Ambrosia and Tripitaka. More extensive transgression during the Late Eocene (36 - 34 Ma) built the complex Barton shorelines that host the Cyclone deposit and the extensive ilmenite-dominated occurrences of the Barton West prospect. Multi-generation reworking of the source sands is indicated by the high proportion of deposits that are zircon-rich relative to titanium minerals. The age distribution of zircon grains in heavy mineral concentrates from the Ooldea and Barton barrier systems points to the Musgrave Province as the predominant ultimate zircon source. Paleorivers discharging along the northern basin margin presumably carried a sediment load that was then redistributed by easterly longshore drift to build the extensive coastal sand deposits along the northern and eastern basin margin. The south-eastern extension of these deposits was reworked during Miocene-Pliocene (15 - 2 Ma) times into a series of regressive strandlines that show angular discordance with the Eocene coastlines. This discordance is consistent with evidence for long-wavelength tilting of the Australian continent from Middle Miocene times, as the continent drifted toward a dynamic topographic low induced by convective mantle processes associated with the South East Asia subduction systems. The Dromedary and Gulliver’s deposits probably formed at this time. Ongoing research is focused on the geological features of the basin that influence heavy mineral transport, concentration and preservation, and the processes leading to deposits with high zircon content.

PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014. The primary objective of mining companies is to function as a profitable business by delivering products that fit customer requirements in a safe and sustainable manner. Optimum resource utilisation is a critical focus area to achieve this objective, and the long-term sustainable business performance of a mining company is determined by the extent to which this is achieved. Technology improvements and/or new technology development could improve resource utilisation. However, adding new projects to a Brownfield operation carries risk. Overall project schedules, tie-in schedules and safety risks normally receive adequate attention, but the introduction and integration of new technology to a Brownfield site also carries the significant risk of failure to achieve design performance (quality or throughput). This risk must be addressed via rigorous design phase risk assessments and piloting. Post commissioning, the effective metallurgical integration of any new technology/circuit/process plant into an existing process plant calls for critical assessment, through circuit performance testing, and optimisation to ensure alignment with design criteria. In addition, this approach provides clear focus areas for further optimisation of the new plant and additional opportunity for overall plant optimisation. Roy Hill recently navigated this process successfully, and this paper provides feedback on the journey that led to improved resource utilisation.

The mining industry is relatively niche and complex compared to other global industries in its safety and operating environment. Whilst some of the technology required to decarbonise the mining industry will emerge from the mass market (eg batteries, energy storage solutions and renewable power generation) where exogeneous external investment and innovation will drive supply, bespoke applications such as material movement will be constrained by industry limitations. Underground load and haul equipment burns the majority portion of underground mine diesel, and typically 25 per cent of scope one and two emissions. Transitioning away from incumbent diesel engines offers a considerable health benefit to all mine workers, as well as decarbonisation achievements, and through trials there is emerging evidence of more productive equipment and realistic expectations of lower operating costs of fleet. However, new equipment and material movement systems that support these industry goals are currently approached with caution due to the pivotal role they play in delivering productivity goals, and the lack of experiential data and certainty to mitigate the supplier development risk during this technology transition period, where all resources are required to meet a booming industry. A group of mining companies and suppliers have the aligned aim to accelerate the understanding and availability of heavy haulage mobile equipment through collaboratively piloting equipment and working with suppliers and each other to aggregate market demand, encourage investment and resolve the mine design and technology choices through their involvement in the Electric Mine Consortium (EMC). This paper will outline the major challenges the industry must overcome in sourcing and adopting a zero-diesel particulate and zero-emission mine, drawn from cases and insights across ten EMC mining company members.

Mining exploration and development projects in Australia are being negatively affected by the highly complex regulatory and bureaucratic processes at all levels of government. These processes affect mining companies operating in Australia by impacting on timelines and the cost of developing a mining project. It is not uncommon for the granting of project approvals to take in excess of five years, meaning that mining companies struggle with productivity, efficiency, time frame and cost issues in respect to their projects in Australia. As the mining boom in Australia is moving from the investment to the production phase, it is now more important than ever to maintain a regulatory landscape that facilitates rather than discourages new investment.While one of our key arguments is that there is too much burdensome regulation and red tape in Australia, we are also strongly believe that regulatory intervention is necessary to ensure that appropriate checks and balances are in place to serve the public interest and manage environmental, health and safety, social and other development-related impacts that may arise from a mining project. However, the regulatory intervention in Australia has come to a point where it is excessive and starting to discourage valuable investment in mining projects for nominal return to the public. Excessive regulation or ‘red tape’ impedes productivity and competitiveness, deters investment and innovation and costs jobs, all of which ultimately impact on the growth of Australia and the standard of living of all Australians.This paper aims to examine and compare the federal, state and local regulations that govern mining projects in Australia. It will highlight how these regulations are unnecessarily complex, lengthy and duplicated and how they can be streamlined to reduce red tape. Simcoa Operations is the only silicon smelter in the region and since the plant was commissioned in late-1989, has progressed from supplying silicon metal to the secondary aluminium market to the current position of supplying in excess of 90 per cent of its production to the high quality chemical and primary aluminium markets. This position has been achieved through the unique advantage which Simcoa has developed within the industry, namely raw materials, people and Simcoa's ability to adopt and use modern technology. A quality culture was instilled into the workforce prior to commissioning which ultimately led to AS3902 qualification in 1992. Simcoa has continued its quality drive through the formation of 'Simcoa's Quality Leadership Process' which is planned to make Simcoa the best silicon producer in the world.

Mine and facility closure planning is a dynamic and rapidly evolving landscape. In this landscape, mining companies and industry consultants are generally good at estimating the associated earthworks and rehabilitation costs, because it is æcore businessÆ. Through our extensive work in mine closure, we have found that the safe and cost-effective demolition of mining related infrastructure is often grossly underestimated. Or alternately, it is simply assumed that the returns on scrap steel and the sale of re-usable plant will cover the related costs. With fluctuating steel prices and no guaranteed buyer for the assets, the estimated monetary return is often unreliable and in many cases unrealistic. On this basis this logic is fundamentally flawed. We have found that on most occasions this has meant that closure cost estimates fall well short of what the actual costs are to close the mine.GSSE and Liberty Industrial have worked on over 60 mine closure projects in Australia and overseas of varying scales and across a range of commodity types. An evaluation of these projects has shown that costs associated with the safe demolition and removal of a mining related infrastructure is in the order of 20 - 30 per cent of the total cost at closure. We believe it is one of the top three risk areas associated with mine closure planning and cost estimation, alongside bulk earthworks and the capping of tailings and waste rock storage facilities.Our paper uses examples from recent projects to demonstrate all aspects outlined above. We have also endeavoured to address the following key points related to the demolition and removal of mining related infrastructure:If companies fail to plan appropriately, complicating factors such as contamination, hazardous materials, mobilisation/demobilisation, geographical location, decommissioning standards, site constraints and weather, can add considerable costs to the project and result in variations for the demolition contractor.Closure planning often assumes infrastructure that is no longer required can be utilised by a third party and/or the new land holder. This paper attempts to explain and describe bankers' approach by: ò outlining the fundamental difference between banks' and investors' risk / return profiles. ò describing lenders' consequent use of cash flow methods in mineral valuation. areas. explaining lenders' specific treatment of key risk Fundamental to understanding banks' appraisal of mineral projects is the appreciation that lenders have a basically different risk profile and outlook from those familiar to equity investors. Lenders do not normally participate in any project upside. The economics of lending dictate that banks can only accommodate a low probability of loan default and consequently banks' principal focus in mineral ""valuation"" is ensuring an acceptably comfortable probability of debt repayment. A simple conceptual explanation of lenders' risk / return position is outlined.

An in-depth process model was developed for the pyrometallurgical, off-gas systems and water balance of the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. This model was used to assess plant capacity with changing concentrate grades, increased throughput and tighter environmental emissions under a range of potential future operating conditions. Comparison of modelled results allowed for flow sheet optimisation across a range of metrics including sustainability, processing capacity and costs. Process modelling software, METSIM® (ver 2020.06 by METSIM International), was used to simulate the flash furnace, integrated electric slag cleaning furnace, Pierce-Smith converters, matte granulation, waste heat boiler, hot gas handling equipment, wet gas cleaning plant and acid plant. The METSIM® model was divided into three separate, yet interconnected models: metals, off-gas and water balancing. This allowed for improved modelling efficiency and traceability while minimising manual error. The METSIM® model was supported by inputs from other specialised software. Chemical thermodynamics software, FactSage™ (ver 8.2 by GTT Technologies), was used to establish relationships for the flash furnace fluxing strategy and determine the operating temperature. Arena® (ver 16.0 by Rockwell Automation), a discrete event modelling software, was used to simulate material movements within the aisle as well as Pierce-Smith converter operation, allowing for integration with upstream and downstream systems. A dynamic data exchange (DDE) was used to connect the results of each software package, interfacing through Excel® (version 4203 by Microsoft). The integration between models provided a streamlined approach to test capacity, bottlenecks, water consumption and emissions under a range of operating conditions, enabling a more robust process. Further downstream modelling techniques were used to assess mechanical equipment. METSIM® outputs provided key parameters for combustion assessments using computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis for the furnace mechanical design.

The Gold Fields Cerro Corona copper-gold deposit in Peru has heterogeneous rock characteristics in terms of its mineralogical, geological and geotechnical properties. Blast design variations in these conditions directly impact the run-of-mine (ROM) fragmentation, which in turn influences downstream process efficiencies. In particular, when harder ore is processed, throughput and circuit performance may be limited.To evaluate the potential to increase throughput and improve overall plant performance by optimising blasting practices and comminution circuit operation, Gold Fields La Cima engaged Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) to conduct a full process integration and optimisation project at Cerro Corona. Blasting, crushing and grinding processes were reviewed to identify the potential to achieve substantial improvements in productivity when treating the most competent ore types.Site-specific models of the blasting, crushing and milling processes were developed using SmartTagTM ore tracking technology for calibration and validation. Ore tracking permitted locations in the blast volume to be queried against the geotechnical block model to determine the hardness and structural parameters of the feed to the comminution circuit. They also ensured surveys were conducted when ore from the audit blast was flowing through the crushing and grinding circuits.The predictive models developed enabled PTI to demonstrate how changes in blast design influenced both ROM fragmentation and the performance of downstream comminution processes. Outcomes of the project suggested changes to blast designs and comminution practices, and these were partially implemented for a validation trial. The trial demonstrated a 14.8 per cent increase in mill throughput for the specific ore selected for the study, and an average increase of 5.7 per cent for all ore types. There is potential to further increase throughput and process performance if all recommendations are implemented. The importance of mine ventilation to health and safety in both coal and metalliferous mines has been long recognised. The primary and secondary ventilation systems in most metalliferous mines incur 50 per cent or more of the total mine electrical power consumption and frequently about 10 per cent of total underground mine operating costs. The requirements for ventilation-related horizontal and vertical development, fans and cooling have a significant impact on mine capital costs and also on mine schedules and start-up times and hence cash flows. There are increasing pressures on regulators and miners to reduce airborne contaminants such as diesel particulatematter, nitrogen dioxide and heat (wet bulb temperatures), and significant pressures to reducegreenhouse gases such as fugitive methane emissions from coalmines and the carbon dioxide footprint of both coal and metalliferous mines. Many previously Australian miners are now globaloperators and have extensive overseas mining operations where local ventilation standards and expertise may not be consistent with Australian practices. The role of the site ventilation officer is also changing with strict new requirements for the statutory position being introduced into Queensland metalliferous mines and the potential for this to become more widespread. Recent regulator and parliamentary review committees have identified systematic shortcomings in mine ventilation compliance, and statutory certificates in both Queensland and NSW now require continuing professional development to maintain currency. Public and investor support for mining are also increasingly contingent on safe, healthy and environmentally responsible practices and the standards for these are frequently tightening. Good ventilation design and operating practices that are consistently well executed therefore contribute significantly not only to a safe and healthy mine but also to a productive and cost-effective operation and the ongoing social licence to operate. There are a variety of ways of providing technical design and oversight into a mine’s ventilation systems; this paper explores some current trends in ventilation standards and statutory requirements, as well as ways to support and develop mine ventilation staff for both domestic and international operations and also the emerging senior technical roles of Group/Principal/Corporate mine ventilation engineer.

The performances of ten field-scale experimental final covers were evaluated over an eight-year period. The covers were evaluated as part of the rehabilitation of acid generating coarse coal reject dumps and opencast coalmines in the Northern KwaZulu Natal province in South Africa. The main purpose of the experimental covers was to restrict rainfall infiltration into acid generating coal discard. The mean average rainfall over the monitoring period was 839 mm with 84 per cent occurring between October and April. The average evaporation was 2100 mm. The site is described as a ædry siteÆ since the evaporation exceeds rainfall by a significant margin. Approximately 30 per cent of rainfall infiltrated the uncovered cells. Rainfall infiltration into the fine coal discard was reduced to 20 per cent and 15 per cent for a 300 mm and 500 mm cover respectively. Infiltration was reduced to ten and 12 per cent of rainfall for fine coal discard provided with a 1000 mm double soil cover and a compacted bottom layer. This relatively high infiltration was probably caused by moisture being entrapped in the bottom retentive layer, and not being released by evapotranspiration. The best performing cover comprised 1000 mm single soil with a compacted bottom layer and infiltration was reduced to four per cent of rainfall. Rainfall infiltration into sloped cells varied between seven per cent and 14 per cent of rainfall. The computer software, SoilCover, was used to predict infiltration and moisture content in the cover. Predictions of rainfall infiltration were accurate, but were less accurate for covers where the hydraulic properties of field compacted soils were not adequately characterised. Oxygen ingress was significantly reduced for cells provided with a 1000 mm cover. Oxygen concentrations were generally below one per cent, with the exception during exceptionally dry periods when the cover dried out, resulting in increased oxygen ingress. For other covers, and the uncovered cells, oxygen concentrations were close to atmospheric concentrations. During the eight-year monitoring period, acid breakthrough occurred in five of the cells, including three uncovered cells, one cell with a 300 mm cover and one sloped cell. In contrast, cells covered with 1000 mm, bottom compacted soils shows a marked improvement of leachate quality, indicating that sulfide oxidation processes have been slowed. There was a distinct relationship between oxygen ingress and leachate quality for all of the cells. No cover degradation was evident over the eight-year period, except for some erosion observed on a sloped cell. The results indicate that the onset of acid drainage can be delayed by perhaps hundreds of years and salinity loads can be reduced by more than 90 per cent, if coarse coal reject dumps in the KwaZulu-Natal provinces in South Africa are provided by an adequate cover system. These research outcomes can be extrapolated and applied to other dry site regions where similar materials are being considered.

Grade control is a process that requires the interaction between many components of the mining operation and successful grade control is only realised through good data, robust systems, and a well-trained, motivated and disciplined workforce.The Mt Magnet Gold Project Pty Ltd (MMGP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ramelius Resources Limited, started mining at Mt Magnet in February 2012 with high expectations for success. Positive cash flow would fund an aggressive exploration and mine development program in the area to increase mine life. Disappointment followed when after start-up the operation had issues achieving budget grade and realising the predicted grade of the mined ore. In January 2013, things started to improve. During the next six months, gold production steadily increased with successive months achieving record production. What had changed?Improvements started following the realisation that controlling grade was not the sole responsibility of the mining geologist and that everyone on-site has a role to play. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Frieda River Project is located in the north-west of Papua New Guinea. The target commodities for a bulk mining operation are copper and gold associated with a large felsic porphyry system. The project comprises a series of deposits, with the Horse-Ivaal-Trukai (HIT) being the largest. It also includes the adjacent smaller Koki and Ekwai deposits.Previous resource estimates for the HIT were made using 14 separate mineralised domains based on structure, copper grades, lithology and alteration. H&S Consultants (H&SC) has revisited the deposit and concluded that a simpler methodology could be used for resource estimation without using wireframes as hard domain boundaries. This conclusion is based on reviewing all the available geological data combined with geological and resource experience of porphyry deposits.It is generally acknowledged that porphyry deposits form by diffusion of mineralising fluids through the host lithologies, meaning that sharp boundaries are unlikely unless these fluids encounter specific physical or chemical boundaries. It is important to prepare a comprehensive geological model prior to attempting resource estimation as it forms the framework for the estimates; however, not all geological features may be relevant to the distribution of mineralisation and there can be a tendency to overcomplicate the estimation process by using too many domains. Unless a hard boundary can be identified consistently and unequivocally, it is generally better not to use a boundary in that location.H&SC completed unconstrained models with no top-cutting using both a simple flat search ellipse and a steep search ellipse to generate global resource estimates reported within a predetermined pit shell at a 0.2 per cent copper cut-off. Both outcomes are within 10 per cent for the tonnes, contained copper tonnes and gold ounces compared to the constrained resource estimate. The slight differences are most likely due to the different search strategies, but also indicate the robustness of the unconstrained modelling approach.CITATION:Queen, L D and Tear, S J, 2015. The perceived and actual impact of government mineral policy upon the government share from gold mining revenues is assessed for ten key countries in which the gold sector is of relevance in advancing economic growth. Five African and five South American jurisdictions are considered, namely Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, South Africa and Tanzania from Africa; and Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guyana and Peru in South America.Both the headline corporate income tax rate and royalty level are identified as poor indicators for the total government share. In addition, significant differences between industry perception and actual government tax levels are identified by this study. The quantitative financial analysis shows that there is no clear relationship between individual taxation rates, taken in isolation, and the overall average effective tax rate (AETR) paid by the project over its life. Neither companies nor governments should use individual taxation rates, or industry perceptions, in isolation to assess the overall competitiveness or equity of a country’s minerals taxation regime – such analysis can be very misleading.In this study, the perceived impact is determined from the well-established Fraser Institute survey published each year, and in 2014 compared 122 minerals jurisdictions globally. The actual impact is determined from quantitative modelling of the financial performance of a hypothetical gold mining project in each country. The technical parameters of the project are held constant; instead the differing mineral policies in each jurisdiction are applied to determine the resultant impact upon the relative share of the economic rents delivered to both private and public sectors.
