It is well known that during the first 15 or 20 years the hardy colonists and un-tfortunate convicts were close to starvation on several occasions and were only saved by the arrival of supply ships, which were dependent on the vagaries of wind and current, and the hazards of the uncharted seas they had to -navigate-.When Australia was little more than a miserable penal settlement, Great Britain was one of the great-powers of the world, and the U,.S.A. was an independent nation with a growing degree of prosperity that even then gave promise of its mighty awakening to become, as it has, a e.olossus of industry and commerce,-and the. leader in living standards of the world to-day.Australia, from such a shaky, and comparatively recent start, has risen to a position in which its living standards rank very high in comparison with those of most of the nations of Europe and America. Exact com-parisons are hard to fix because of the wide variety of factors involved .but the Institute of Pab?Lic Affairs .(Victoria) places Australia fifthin the world, excelled only by the U.S.A., Canada, Sweden and Switzerland. The next best after Australia are the United Kingdom, West Germany and France.How we achieved such a high standard of living is a vast subject for study but some of the economic aspects of our climb from abject poverty to a position of near affluence can readily be identified.

Mindola mine is currently the deepest mine in the Zambian copper belt. Stoping is currently active to 1330 m below surface with long range plans indicating future production from 1590 m level. The orebody is tabular and dips between 55o to vertical. The thickness varies from 8 to 14 m. The vertical crater retreat method of mining was first introduced at Mindola mine in the late-1980s following several trials that helped define the design criteria for its application. Over the last ten years the method has been continually modified to improve safety and maximise ore production. For example, due to the weakness of some rock units within the orebody formation and the instability of the hanging wall, the last VCR slices are usually between 8 - 10 m thick, and efforts are being made to strictly apply shrinkage method in order to reduce dilution. Recent advances in mining technology in the areas of equipment, blasting techniques, rock mechanics and materials handling have been employed to increase the overall productivity of the mine. Large down-the-hole machines capable of drilling 165 mm diameter blast holes, up to 80 m long are used in stoping. Each stope produces up to 20 000 tonnes of ore per month and can last for three months. Heavy systematic ground support of VCR development has significantly enhanced safety for mining crews and equipment. Crater mining has not only improved productivity and enhanced safety, but also overcome various problems associated with conventional sublevel open stoping previously employed at the mine. This paper discusses the technical and operational aspects of vertical crater retreat mining at Mindola mine during the last ten years. The changes in mining method are often accompanied by changes in mine design, blast design, mining equipment, ground support and operating practices.

Business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) are established IT technologies that are used extensively in the business environment. This paper discusses the use of these technologies in production environments and beneficiation plants.Assmang’s Khumani mine is an iron ore operation located in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Assmang Limited is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited. This paper presents a case study of a BI solution applied to this plant, which is used by metallurgists, supervisors and all levels of operations and management to extract and analyse data to control and optimise the operation of the plant.The main advantage of adopting an established BI solution is the ease with which production personnel can extract and analyse data. The data is easily presented in familiar spreadsheets and no IT staff or specific training is required to achieve this.The solution adopted at Khumani mine uses a data mart with a multidimensional model (called an online analytical processing (OLAP) cube) acting as the main repository and source of data. The OLAP cube simplifies the access and analysis of plant data.The OLAP cube stores data in a specifically-designed way, which allows extraction and analysis to be performed quickly. It is designed to hold large amounts of data on a long-term basis, which could be for the life of the plant. It also performs automatic aggregations over many dimensions on a background process.A major benefit in adopting such a BI solution is that it allows common BA methods to be applied. This is due to both the efficient long-term storage of data and the availability of standard BA tools. BA tools are now able to perform data mining, predictive analytics, forecasting and other machine-learning algorithms. Based on the cubic law, the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities has the most significant effect on the hydraulic conductivity of jointed rocks. The hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities is a stress-dependant parameter and reduces with increasing applied stress. Furthermore, the rock stress increases with increasing depth. Therefore, hydraulic aperture is a depth-dependant parameter. In this paper, new empirical equations are introduced to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities at different depths. These equations were developed on the basis of back analysis of compiled packer tests from different actual cases. They provide the capability to calculate range of variation and average hydraulic aperture when the orientation of discontinuity and field stress tensor are given. Furthermore, it is possible to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities when its value is given for another depth. A hydraulic aperture of 7.7?µm was calculated by this method, comparing well with a reported site value of 8.3?µm for rock discontinuities at the Stripa mine project at a depth of 385?m. A case study examining the procedures and financial benefits of introducing dump leaching to augment the Mt Gibson Gold Project CIP operations is discussed. Metallurgical testwork, followed by pilot dump leach operations, confirmed that gold recoveries of greater than 60 per cent could be achieved by dump leaching Mt Gibson laterite ore. Capital and operating costs were determined. Pit optimisation using the Whittle FOUR-D optimisation program calculated an optimum cutover grade between CIP and dump leaching for one orebody. The resultant recalculation of reserves based on CIP and dump leach operating costs showed that reserves for that orebody could be increased from 329 000 tonnes at 1.9 g/t An, to 1 488 000 tonnes at 1.2 gh An. NPV for the CIP only option of $1.4 m, was increased to $4.0 m for the combined CIP/dump leach option. This technique can be applied to existing gold projects and to new Developments.

West Cliff Colliery mines Bulli Seam occurring at a depth of approximately 480 m. The Seam is intersected by a number of small shear zones and faults. While the faults have caused displacement of the seam, the shear zones are strike-slip structures with small apparent displacement of seam. Outbursts at West Cliff Colliery occur while driving through these shear zones. Few outburst wave occurred where faults have been intersected. In the last 3 years, over one hundred outbursts have occurred at West Cliff Colliery. The size of outbursts varies from a small bump to exceeding 140 tonnes of coal. A number of studies have been undertaken at West Cliff Colliery to control outbursts and predict Outbursts in advance of workings. These include: geological investigations, microseismic techniques, gas adsorption studies and gas drainage. The investigations to date suggest that outbursts of gas at West Cliff Colliery are more a gas phenomenon similar to what occurs in overseas mines. The results of various investigations are reported. West Cliff Colliery is located in the mid- west of the southern coal fields of N.S.W.

In addition, the outcome of negotiations with overseas customers is often uncertain for long periods, or even unfavourable. The industries and companies represented at this Conference are in an arena of high competition, risk taking and enormous capital outlay. They are industries which our overseas markets (rightly or wrongly) have criticised for industrial relations problems, unreliable production and uncertain deliveries. They are industries which have an urgent need to be cost effective and competitive at all levels of activity.A critical factor in the mining and metallurgy industries is, therefore, its human resources and its human resource management. It requires the full use of available talent, innovation, skills and qualifications within its workforce, and the appropriate management of these resources.

Traditionally, the Lead Lode at Broken Hill has been represented on presentation plans, cross sections and diagrams in scientific papers as a solid black mass, around which the more 'interesting' and 'structurally useful', wall rocks appear to wrap. Structural analysis of the Broken Hill orebodies has usually turned to these wall rocks to determine the structural history of the mineralisation.This tendency to represent the orebody as a massive single entity is incorrect and the aim of this paper is to illustrate that sulphide orebodies (in this case Lead Lode), are a dynamic part of the mine stratigraphy. They can preserve a great deal of useful structural information that can be recorded with detailed internal mapping.Three main categories of ore type are recognised in Lead Lode; Stratiform ores, Mobilised ores and Metasomatically altered ore. The ore types in these categories occupy or have formed in distinct structural and stratigraphic positions and have clearly recognisable inter-relationships.

Methane in coal mines is an ever present hazard resulting in loss of lives and serious economic consequences. For effective control of methane, ventilation alone may not be totally adequate in some situations. In order to deal with such cases, new methods for the control of methane are being researched. One such method based on biotechnology has been investigated in Canada in the past several years. This method involves bringing methane oxidizing micro- organisms into contact with coal to oxidize the methane released to non-flammable products.

The Basil Cu/Co deposit comprises a 26.5 Mt Inferred Resource of copper and cobalt, grading 0.57?per cent Cu and 0.05 per cent Co. It lies in the Harts Range, Central Australia, within the Riddock Amphibolite of the Irindina Province. Analysis of drilling within the mineralised zone of the deposit determined a spatial association between pyrrhotite with high magnetic susceptibility and chalcopyrite, following a strong magnetic trend as determined from airborne geophysics. A study was commissioned to examine if geophysical inversion could predict the distribution of sulfide mineralisation based on pyrrhotite from drill hole intersections, as well as predicting further mineralisation at depth or in the vicinity of the deposit. Petrophysical and geostatistical analysis of drilling susceptibility and mineralisation provided a basis of property distribution inside the model. This was followed by 3D geological modelling of mineralisation based on domain kriging of drill hole susceptibility sensitivity testing of signal to source depth, and distribution was performed using 3D forward modelling. Stochastic inversion generated alternative 3D geological models, which were tested for behaviour and adherence to observed drilling data and geostatistical limitations using GeoModeller software. Predicted mineralisation distribution was compared with conventional geostatistical modelling and found to be in agreement in planar behaviour but exhibiting possibly isoclinally folded trends, with reliability increasing closer to the surface. Predictions of mineralisation at greater depth and beneath weaker anomalies were more diffuse due to small model cell size having limited influence on the signal at depth.The Blackbush uranium deposit comprises a 64.5 Mt Inferred Resource, grading 230 ppm U in the Pirie Basin south of Whyalla, South Australia. It directly overlies the radiogenic Samphire Granite and is considered a tertiary unconformity deposit. Sensitivity modelling was performed using high-resolution ground gravity to see if a deposit signature could be detected using gravity. This required 3D implicit modelling of the geology and mineralisation from drill hole data and characterisation of an associated physical property model using domain kriging in GeoModeller. Density models relied on exploiting an observed relationship between logged density and measured uranium oxide percentage. The residual gravity response of the background geology model identified the location of the uranium deposit. Stochastic inversion of the litho/property 3D model has refined the known distribution of uranium from drilling and provided structural insights into the deposit.These projects have become excellent case studies for exploiting the relationship between mineralisation and potential fields and for testing the applicability of using domain kriging of properties determined from drilling to build robust 3D geological models for stochastic geophysical inversion, leading to robust methods for exploration targeting and mineral deposit prediction.CITATION:Zengerer, M, 2014. Pipelines are the vital link in making natural gas available to a region and to individual mines. This paper will cover the role of pipelines in supplying mining projects in Australia, the development and status of the Ballera to Mount Isa gas pipeline and the future prospects for gas pipelines in the Carpentaria Mineral Province.

The Cannington silver lead zinc deposit is located near Mt Isa in North West Queensland. This world class orebody is owned by BHP World Minerals (BHP) and is estimated to contain 45 million tonnes of ore at an average grade of 11 per cent lead, four per cent zinc and 500 grams/tonne silver. At BHPÆs planned 1.5 Mtpa extraction rate, the mine life will exceed 20 years. Construction of the underground mine, which commenced in August 1993, was carried out by Peabody Resources Ltd (Mining Services Division) (PRL) for BHP Minerals Pty Limited (BHP) under contract packages totalling approximately $100 M using several innovative techniques to deliver safety, quality and time related project goals. Client/Contractor Partnering, resulting in harmonious working relationships, a combined commitment to the achievement of an excellent safety record, and a seamless transition from the construction phase to operation of the mine, has been a feature of the project.

New opportunities for miners are beginning to appear through new discoveries, improved knowledge and access to vast unexplored areas of the deep sea and continental shelf. Recent discoveries of undersea hydrothermal deposits show evidence of high-grade mineralisation, although in many instances the extent of the resource is still unknown. The promise and the difficulties of undersea mining have been evident since attempts were first made to mine manganese nodules in the 1960s. The physical nature of the undersea resource is a key influence on its mining potential; and environmental issues will also become increasingly important. This paper explores these issues and concludes with a description of the immediate to medium term applied research required to develop this industry and the spin off that such research can provide.

Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores from the Upper Group 2 (UG2) reef often contain significant concentrations of chromite which can potentially be upgraded to produce a saleable product. A common approach is to implement gravity separation on the PGM flotation circuit tailings. However, where the particle size range of interest is broad and the lower size limit ultra-fine, the challenge is how to maximise the recovery at a saleable product grade without compromising throughput. This study was concerned with the performance of a REFLUX™ Classifier for beneficiation of a PGM bearing chromite ore and the benefits of size classification. The sample had a nominal top size of 0.5 mm and was processed over the complete size range and in two discrete size classes following classification at 106 µm. The primary goal was to produce a concentrate exceeding 40 wt. per cent Cr2O3, ideally approaching 42 wt. per cent Cr2O3, with minimal PGM losses above 106 µm. A major challenge was to process at the required solids throughput in a single stage with the feed pulp density constrained to a nominal upper limit of 30 wt. per cent solids. It was found that varying the controller density set point of the REFLUX™ Classifier produced strong control of the product grade. Products as high as 41.1 wt. per cent Cr2O3 were produced at 78.6 per cent recovery for the +106 µm material, while in the −106 µm portion the product grade was as high as 41.4 wt. per cent Cr2O3 at 83.2 per cent recovery. Processing the feed in discrete size classes enabled the volumetric feed and fluidisation rates to be optimised for a given application; hence, superior performance was achieved at the finer sizes. This work has demonstrated the value in considering feed preparation as well as technology selection in developing a robust process solution.

There are still vast areas of Australia in which either the hydrocarbon potential has already been indicated but from which no hydrocarbons have been produced or else are completely untested. Despite the lack of recent new oil discoveries, it is anticipated that initial gas discoveries in these areas will be followed by oil discoveries as has happened historically. General exploration activities are continually providing new information that is being input to update previous hydrocarbon assessments for Australia, and all indications are that future exploration efforts will discover a lot of gas, some small oil pools and there is a chance to prove a major new oil province. Because of this, it is anticipated that reserves growth will continue at the average historical rate of about 200 MMB/year until the year 2000. The most frequent scenario will be costly exploration resulting in small oil discoveries and high development costs. This, in the past, has resulted in low profitability for Australian oil exploration, but windfalls for the Australian government.

Precious metals in the Rosebery north-end orebody occur predominantly in sphalerite- galena-pyrite ore and to a lesser extent in massive barite mineralisation. Gold may also occur in the upper parts of pyrite-chalcopyrite ore (although this ore type is usually gold poor), in pyritic mineralisation lateral to base metal sulphide lenses and in the footwall (very patchy). Although present, remobilised precious metals do not occur in economically significant quantities. Mineralogically, silver occurs dominantly in tetrahedrite and, to a lesser extent, argen- tiferous galena. Gold occurs as electrum associated dominantly with pyrite and, to a lesser extent, tetrahedrite. Geochemical modelling suggests that silver was probably transported as a chlorocomplex, while gold was transported dominantly as a thiocomplex, although at high temperature gold was transported as a chlorocomplex.

As mining and extraction processes improve and lower grade ores become economic, mining for most ores have extended to depths beneath the zone of weathering oxidation created over geological history. These deeper openings expose sulphidic formations and reduced mineral species as either primary ore or simply as accessory or gangue minerals in the country rock. This is not new, underground mining for primary base metal and gold have long been familiar with these problems, as have coal and uranium miners. The change is simply that the number of mines exposing sulphidic waste rocks, tailings to the atmosphere and/or leaving behind dewatered sulphidic rock surrounding the mine void has increased the number of sites from where acid mine drainage (AMD) may emanate with consequential problems for the hydrological environment including downstream catchments (Miller et al, 1996). The principles of ecologically sustainable development (Brundtland, 1987) have been more or less ratified by all the developed nations of the world and this has led, amongst other things, to an expansion unprecedented in the research and documentation of means for achieving long-term environmentally acceptable stabilisation of solid wastes of all sorts. These have revealed that AMD problems can be minimised and even reversed in many cases by the integration or co-disposal of biodegradable organic wastes with oxidising sulphidic wastes (Elliott et al, 1996). This paper considers how this might be achieved at mine sites in Australia and the results encountered at some relevant sites.

The Argentine pyroclastic loess arevulcanogenic deposits, which have their sources in the circumnpacific rim. The object of this work is to realize a de-tailed mineralogical characterization of this sediments, to use it like a geo logic outline which regiters discordance or similarity in them, The sampling zone extend from 714N-4125 to 622W-339S. The descriptions of these sediments was considered like basic, mesobasic or acid rocks. The basic sediments, looking like andesite-basaltic composition, are fill-ing the andean valley. The mesobasic one have a similar composition with a pyro-clastic dacite rock, and have been found in marshy pleistocene sediments in the intermountain valley and in the pampeana prairies. The acid ashed conform rhyoda-cite-rhyolite sediments which form the pampeana loess covers in the prairie.

Mining of the Martha Hill epithermal gold deposit via open pit methods will excavate a pit to 15 m below sea level. Regular geotechnical evaluations of pit slopes have taken place. Details of the various components of these evaluations, including geological structure, material strength, and groundwater, are covered. Pitwall geological structures are represented clearly on pit floor grade control maps with the dominant sets being steeply dipping strike fractures. Cross cutting shears are common. Material strength is reflected by the oxidation status of the hydrothermally altered host rocks, with weaker material occurring in partially oxidised ground. Regional groundwater is generally high, particularly on the north-eastern side of the pit, where it has been little affected by de-watering. Geological structures appear to control the flow of groundwater in the proximity of pitwalls and require draining by the introduction of horizontal drains. An overview of pit slope design is given. Slopes are designed for overall slope stability, allowing for the occurrence of minor interbench failures.
