Narrow reef gold deposits are generally less than 4 m in width and relatively complex geological phenomena. They often display variable geometry, attitude, continuity and internal architecture. Economic grades are mostly restricted to specific structural domain(s) and localised within discrete ore shoots that have a nuggety internal grade distribution. On account of the often extended history of geological events, the specific factors localising gold-rich domains are likely to be unique to a particular mine or even reef. These features lead to a high resource risk and require careful management during both evaluation and mining. The gross form, location and global continuity of gold reefs can generally be determined from surface diamond drilling leading to the definition of Inferred Mineral Resources. It is likely that for the definition of Indicated and Measured Mineral Resources underground development and/or close- spaced diamond drilling will be required. Understanding geometry and continuity permits the resource to be more effectively managed, lowering risk/uncertainty. This in turn will allow for well-informed financial and operational decisions. Most importantly, project expectations and milestones can be set at achievable levels.

The aim of this paper is to summarise all known Phanerozoic ooidal ironstone deposits worldwide, including Australian deposits such as the well-known channel iron deposits (CID). Nearly 400 occurrences have been catalogued based on stratigraphy, geographical coordinates, facies, grade, tonnage and iron bearing ore minerals. The description also includes details on the geochemistry, genetic models and main references. Brief statistical analysis provides an overview of the variation between these deposits. This compilation offers a basis for better understanding of the ooidal ironstone deposits and a global evaluation of this important resource worldwide.

Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.

Revised throughput rates, as a result of current mining methods and tight controls on mine dilution, have dictated a change in metallurgical philosophy at Renison Limited. Emphasis on throughput capacity increases has altered to a reduction in circuit complexity and operating costs. Extensive surveys of the gravity and cassiterite flotation circuits led to several plant modifications between August 1989 and March 1990. The coarse and fine gravity retreatment roughing tables were by-passed, the coarse gravity retreatment roughing tables were re-commissioned, the cassiterite flotation rougher capacity expanded and the gravity regrind cyclones re-configured.

For more than 30 years shearer loaders have been the most important winning machines for,longwall mining. While the machines of the first generation had a driving power of only 100 or so kW, the present day shearer loaders may be powered by more than 1000 kW. Daily outputs of 24000 tonnes have now been reached, but this still does not set a limit. If the deposit conditions allow, further increases are possible. This requires the optimum coordination of all system components. For this paper the use of coal plows has been of little import as plows have found no favour, and nor are they likely to do so in today's economics in Australian coal mining.

Five types of mineral resource were known in the sedimentary cover of the oceans and seas floors prior to the 1980's :1) hydrocarbon fields including some very large zones of oil and gas accumulation; 2) "Red Sea" type thermal oozes with increased concentrations of noble metals; 3) ferromanganese nodules; 4) concentrations of metallic sulphides ("Black Smokers"); and 5) cobalt-bearing ferromanganese crusts on the summits and slopes of seamounts. Since then, the so called "White Smokers", containing sulphides of copper and zinc, have been discovered. The ore horizons (manganese, copper, nickel and other metals) of the sedimentary cover of deep-sea basins comprise a sixth type of mineral resource in the oceans. Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had sane reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one third of the lead losses in the final tails.

During the past 18 months a rock mechanics project has been in operation at Renison Limited. The project was established to identify and investigate key problem areas that would affect future production at the Renison mine. An in-house approach was adopted, using shall compact equignent, to investigate ground behaviour. Information on the rock stress field was considered to be particularly important for an understanding of ground behaviour. A high horizontal stress component exists, which enables large flat dipping spans of hanging wall to be opened up, with support being provided by post pillars. The amount of support provided by these post pillars has been found to be low.

Pyro-metallurgy is still the main process for lead production and a lot of lead direct smelting processes have been developed in recent years. All the processes will experience two steps in common. The first is the oxidisation of PbS to PbO and then reduction from PbO to Pb, furthermore, from ZnO to Zn. So, the composition of melts, especially the slag composition at reduction step change continuously. Up to now, there are few systematic results on the slag physical-chemical properties with its composition change. In this work, the typical lead direct smelting processes were analysed from theoretical and practical standpoints. The full-period slag composition and slag melting point change were compared. Especially, to the PbO and ZnO reduction steps, based on the full-period slag composition change, the slag properties were predicted. Based on dust composition and test results, the mechanism of Pb compound evaporation and its effect on practice and measurement of high PbO bearing slag physical-chemical property is discussed. It is suggested that to restrain the evaporation in practice and to obtain more accurate measurement results of physicochemical properties of smelting slag are the key problem not only to set high efficiency, energy saving process, but also to environmental pollution control.

Drill performance monitoring studies were recently completed at the Fording River mine, British Columbia. Microprocessor-based instrumen- tation and data analysis techniques were developed with the objective to improve short and long term mine planning. Data analysis permitted the identification of thicknesses and interfaces between soft/hard zones at depth based upon the recorded responses of the drill. Data clearly con- trast the soft coal seams and harder waste rock units based on variations in recorded drill rotary speed and torque, hydraulic downpressure, bail- ing air pressure and instantaneous rate of penetration. These parameters were monitored and recorded at 10 cm sampling intervals. Processed drill data was correlated with gamma logs, an existing means for locating coal seams and distinguishing between waste units. Current development of a pattern recognition module aims towards automated interpretation of drill data, identifying micro-and macro-geological and geomechanical rock mass characteristics. Delay between acquiring, processing and interpret- ing the drill data for practical use by mine personnel should be minimized. Integration of this technology with the mine's current main-frame based Mine Engineering Application System software will enable more accurate and timely annlication of the nrocessed drill data.

Thirty two polyacrylamide flocculant samples were selected from the wide range offered to the Australian coal industry. An extensive test program was conducted to consider the properties of the flocculants, the substrates, the process conditions and the water chemistry encountered in coal preparation plants. The study indicated that flocculants with molecular weights of 12 to 14 million and degree of hydrolysis around 40% gave the best "average" performance over a wide range of process conditions. The pick-up and filtration of fine coal was demonstrated on a pilot scale to be a critical function of flocculant properties. This study also showed that the agitation intensity during flocculation was a critical parameter in determining the settling rate of the slurry and the clarity of the resulting supernatant. An electronic meter to measure agitation intensity was designed, constructed and tested to demonstrate how, for the first time, laboratory results can be implemented in operating plants.

In an on-going study of the chemistry of base metal sulphide flotation, the effect of the inclusion of cyanide in the reagents suite has been studied, with special reference to ore from Pasminco Mining's Elura mine. Cyanide has been variously described as an iron sulphide depressant, a preventor of sphalerite activation and as an activator of galena. In the case described here, the cyanide appeared to act as an enhancer of the galena flotation performance, raising the lead recoveries by 25 per cent but leaving the sphalerite and pyrite responses unaffected. The lead rougher flotation performance with and without cyanide was investigated over a wide range of redox potentials (0 mV to 400 mV SHE). In all cases, the inclusion of the cyanide brought about an increase in the galena recovery and was responsible for a faster rate of galena flotation during the initial stages of the beneficiation. A surface characterisation study (XPS) of the lead flotation stage, with and without cyanide, indicated that the reagent interacted specifically with the galena and pyrite minerals. It was possible to correlate the surface absorption of the cyanide on the lead and iron sulphides with improvements to the flotation performance using the combination of surface spectroscopy and laboratory flotation Testwork.

Investigations were carried out of burden distribution using a full scale model of the furnace top. Various charging sequences were used and large differences were found between ore charged as sinter-pellets and as pellets-sinter. These were attributed to the differences in the angle of repose between the two materials. Permeability index was defined which was independent of the driving rate from which a furnace resistance index was obtained for use in weekly reports. Results are summarised as a single expression between blast rates and pressures and the values of Qbl and Qmax are continuously measured to aid the operators in controlling the wind rate in the safe AP region. Results also indicate a reserve in capacity of No. 7 BF.

The evaluation of mining projects requires a methodology that will give flexibility and manage the existing uncertainty within the projects. The discount cash flow (DCF) and other traditional evaluation approaches, which are widely used in evaluating a significant number of mining projects, have simply assumed that the main variables remain constant in their evaluation; elements such as discounted rate, mine life, operating cost and production rate. The DCF ignores managementÆs flexibility to adapt and reforecast and revise decisions. Real options valuation (ROV) is one of the modern evaluation methodologies that provide a tool to adapt and revise mining projects under uncertainty and future variables movements. ROV brings more variables into the evaluation model compared to DCF and assumes them as uncertain and dependent. Finally, ROV provides a range of solutions that can assist in managing this flexibility.This paper endeavours to compare ROV and DCF for mining projects comprehensively and applies these two techniques in the model. The paper shows that ROV will be inclusive of extra value in mining projects due to variables not allowed for, or even ignored, when the DCF model alone is used. One of the significant advantages of the ROV method is being able to evaluate mining projects under different scenarios from the inception of the projects. Furthermore, ROV gives the ability to evaluate the mining project while allowing for abandonment, temporary suspension, or expanding the mining project. In other words, the ROV evaluation process creates an analytical environment, which allows for optimisation of the mining plan within the mining project, as well as the ability to change the capital structure dependant on existing circumstances over the life of the project. The ROV is a new evaluation method that can add value in mining project analysis and offers opportunities to amplify gains, or to mitigate losses. Pyrite and Cu-concentrate were roasted in vertically suspended state in an externally heated tube. Tubes of three different lengths of reaction zone were used for three different reaction times. Roasted ores were submitted to chemical analysis and the extent of roasting reactions was determined. In case of pyrite, extent of roasting reactions was not affected much by reactor length and heating temperature (above 500¦C), but was considerably by ore/air ratio. Micro- scopic and XMA examinations led to the conclus- ion that pyrite particles decomposed to pyrrho- tite and then pyrrhotite was oxidized to give Fe-S-0 melt, magnetite and hematite. The extent of reaction was not uniform in all particles but had a wide distribution from unreacted pyrite to completely oxidized particles. Combustion of Cu-concentrate from Kuroko complex sulfide ore ) was unstable under a uniform wall temperature of 450¦C, but proceed- ed rapidly at temperatures above 500¦C. Sticking of roasted ores to the wall of the reaction tube induced choking of the tube, caused by melting of roasted ores, at tempera- tures above 950¦C. Enrichment of oxygen exterted less influence on reaction rate than heating temperature of the tube. Particle size of ore had a big effect on reaction rate.

In Lusatia, lignite mining causes major disturbances on the landscape scale. Reclamation procedures are applied to recover the reconstructed landscape for different land use options. In this study we investigate soil physical properties of an agricultural reclamation/recultivation site directly after site restoration and the development of selected parameters within the first years after site restoration depending on varying recultivation strategies.The sandy substrates used for recultivation stem from depths of several meters. They are unstructured, free of recent organic matter and have high contents of calcium carbonate. During reconstruction and most of all during surface levelling with heavy crawlers, the substrate?undergoes high mechanical stresses. This leads to partly severe soil or substrate compaction, depending amongst others on substrate water content and mechanical stresses during site construction. We investigate the effect of different organic soil amendments, different crop rotations and partly subsoiling on the development of soil structure. We compare results of laboratory measurements directly after site construction before any reclamation measures had been applied to results we gained after three and four years of recultivation. The results show that after the earthworks are completed, the site is strongly heterogeneous in relation to mechanical stability, permeability for air and water, pore volume and bulk density. The results after three and four years show that the heterogeneity of soil physical parameters decreases. The selection of suitable crop rotations superimposes the affects of other reclamation measures, eg varying organic fertilisers or deep loosening.CITATION:Krnmmelbein, J and Raab, T, 2012.
