HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE OF EXPLOSIVES TO MINERAL PRODUCTION The ancient method of breaking rock was to build a wood fire against the face, heat the rock through and then pour water on the heated ore-bearing rock to cause it to break by tension. It was too slow and costly as the forests around the mines were cleared and transport of wood became difficult. Black powder had been used for 300 years as a gun propel- lant. ('Black' after Berthold Schwartz, a German monk, Figure 1, and the inventor of the gun who was given the epitaph `Here lies Berthold the Black, the most abominable of inhumans who by his invention has brought misery to the rest of humanity'). Only at the beginning of the 17th Century, black powder was introduced for loosening rock in European mines. In 1802 Dupont started black powder manufacture on the Brandywine Creek. The ignition train of powder was enclosed in goose quills, straws, rushes, paper or wooden tubes. The time interval between igni- tion and blast was pure speculation.

Bauxite mining on Cape York Peninsula (CYP) commenced in the early 1960s in the region surrounding the town of Weipa. Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) operates its bauxite mines on the homelands of 11 Indigenous Traditional Owner groups. The mining activity currently operates under three Aboriginal Agreements including an Indigenous Land Use Agreement – the Western Cape Communities Coexistence Agreement (WCCCA) – which provides RTA with access to the land in return for a range of benefits to the Traditional Owners, including employment, training, royalty payments and future relinquishment of the land (Klimenko and Evans, 2009). Despite reports of some ‘good progress’ in meeting the terms of the WCCCA (Klimenko and Evans, 2009, p 5), many of the region’s Traditional Owners remain dissatisfied. The Meekatharra mining district lies in the northern pan of the Murchison Province of the Archaean Ynlgam block of Western Australia. Since dis- covery of the Paddy's Flat belt in the district in 1897 total gold production has been 67 tonnes and a further 33 tonnes in resources have been defined by drilling. The Paddy's Flat gold deposits occur within the Gabanintha Formation, a basal formation of the Murchison greenstone sequence containing komatiitic basalts, ultramafics and minor banded iron formations. The regional control on the distribution of deposits is an anastomosing shear belt which extends over 350 km and incorporates the Mt Magnet, Reedys and Meekatharra deposits. The following gold deposit styles may be recognized based on lithological association and alteration: Albite porphyry hosted, Carbonate-fuchsite- quartz alteration hosted deposits, Banded Iron Formation hosted sulphide replacement gold deposits and quartz vein deposits. With the exception of the banded iron formation hosted deposits, the Paddy's Flat alteration zone shows strong similarities to the alteration styles at Kerr-Addison (Ontario).

Underground mining for gold began in Beaconsfield in 1877 and development of the Tasmania Mine saw the sinking of multiple shafts, including the Hart Shaft over the ensuing 35 years. The mine closed in 1914 at a depth of 455 m due to prevailing economics, eventually reopening in 1999. The modern mine closed in 2012 after extending the mine from a historical depth of 455 m to the exhaustion of the modern Ore Reserve at a depth of 1210 m. West Tamar Council took over the lease for the immediate area around the Hart Shaft as an extension of the adjacent museum. The Hart Shaft and above ground structures became a significant drawcard for visitors. Tasmania was affected by sustained wet weather during May, June and July of 2016 which caused severe flooding and significant Statewide damage. This uncharacteristically intense wet weather caused saturation of the ground surrounding the Hart Shaft. Eventual shaft failure was first identified in August 2016. The failure of the shaft occurred at approximately 50 m below surface and resulted in a plug of material completely blocking the shaft. Significant surface subsidence affecting the surface infrastructure ensued. Due to the unstable nature of the surrounding material, it was determined that addressing the failure above the blockage would not provide a permanent solution to prevent the continued flow of material into the shaft. Many options to stabilise the shaft were considered, however it was assessed that a concrete plug in the shaft in competent ground at a depth of 100 m below surface and well below the blockage, would provide the only long-term solution. Man-entry was considered unsafe. The solution to access ultimately entailed filling the entire shaft with granular fill up to 100 m depth to act as formwork for a concrete plug. The rising mains at 400 mm and 250 mm diameter, which remained in place in the shaft, provided the avenue for placing the fill and ultimately, the concrete plug. Once the plug was in place the remainder of the shaft up to the underside of the blockage and over the top of the blockage to the surface was successfully filled with a combination of more granular fill and flowable cement stabilised sand. The Hart Shaft and surrounding above ground infrastructure was successfully stabilised and re-opened to tourist access. CITATION:Johnson, D, Turner, A and Hills, P, 2018. Coal loss is an important issue at many coalmines, with losses of five per cent being common. The type of loss varies from mine to mine but is dependent on mine strata, the drilling and blasting processes applied and the mining method used. Typical coal loss mechanisms from the drill and blast process are coal roof damage and edge loss. Usually a reduction in coal loss is in direct competition with the need to provide material that is well-fragmented and a muck pile that has the required cast percentage. These competing issues were addressed over a two-year period at a mine in the New South Wales Coalfields by implementing a five-step approach. This was centred around building an understanding of the coal loss mechanisms utilising proprietary heave- modelling software, measuring coal losses by comparing survey to drill and/or gamma logs and implementing appropriate coal loss reduction processes. The end result exceeded expectations with a 95 per cent reduction in coal loss. Soil gases were collected on activated charcoal, analyzed by computerized mass spectrometry and treated with multivariate statistical pattern recognition to determine the diagnostic geochemical signature associated with the Okuaizu Geothermal Field in Japan. From this a geothermal model was developed and compare to 175 "unknown" samples in a 250 m spaced grid over 30 1Qn2 mapping the areas with a matching geochemical character. Faults and fractures were generally located by the presence of high molecular weight components. Following the initial survey, the faults in two specific areas were precisely located by a second survey with samples at 10-30m spacing. Where earlier geochemical surveys had placed anomalies 1-2 Km northeast of the geothermal center, the fingerprint survey accurately mapped the system and detected several faulted zones. It was not misled by hot springs located away from the geothermal System.

Floor failure on the longwall face is a complex problem due to the dynamic interaction between the surrounding strata and powered roof supports involving multiple variables. It can also be highly problematic and costly when not well understood as there are significantly less remedies available post event. This was the early experience at the case study mine where significant lost time was incurred due to unplanned delays in the first two panels. To detect and prevent such occurrences is clearly the best approach, hence a tool to predict both floor failure occurrence and magnitude prior to mining was developed. Several parameters were determined as the key drivers for the failure events that had been experienced at this site. These parameters were, in list of influence from highest to lowest, material strength, retreat rate and the presence of water. The parameters were evaluated using a semi quantitative risk rating system ‘Heave Risk’ and given a weighting per their apparent influence. This ‘expert system’ methodology was selected as the use of risk rating systems in underground coal mining is well established. The heave risk model was first applied to previously mined panels. It accurately identified all areas of known major floor heave, with clearly defined areas of low and high risk apparent. The heave risk model was then used prior to mining and evaluated post mining based on observed conditions. It was found to also be highly accurate for prediction. The variability of each parameter and its influence on the overall risk rating is illustrated and discussed.

Grade Engineering® (GE) involves a range of integrated technologies and operating protocols for improving effective feed grade through early rejection of low value material prior to costly processing activities and has the potential to transform the economics of large, low grade, mining operations. Extensive GE test work by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and the Cooperative Resource Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRCORE) determined that the Gramalote gold deposit in Colombia is highly amenable to implementation of grade-by-size screening to upgrade the ore at a production scale. To understand the relationships between geology and the upgrade response drill core and bulk samples were analysed at the Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences (CODES) as part of a larger CRCORE project to understand geological controls on grade-by-size deportment, i.e., the tendency for specific mineral phases to preferentially fractionate during breakage into different size fractions. This work is focussed on understanding the role of mineralogy and texture in influencing rock breakage and natural fractionation at a range of scales. Detailed logging of Gramalote drill core and mineralogical analyses including hyperspectral logging, portable and bench-scale X-ray fluorescence (XRF), plus low resolution Laser Ablation of intact drill core pieces, combined with data from site (drill logs, geochemistry, petrophysics) were used to evaluate the ore and alteration mineralogy, vein paragenesis and textural variability. This provided information on gold deportment and allowed the identification of favourable host veins. Bulk sample material from different ore grade zones was also analysed. A comparison with the results of GE testing shows that positive upgrade results are produced by rocks with abundant veins, particularly those associated with potassic and/or white mica alteration. This work indicates upgrade response can be predicted from drill core using data collected by a combination of automated systems including hyperspectral data, XRF, and detailed drill core logging.

The Cooljarloo North Mine has been shaped not only by operational and processing challenges, but by climatic and economic factors. This paper outlines some of these challenges and discusses how the operating strategy has been altered over time to mitigate the impacts.Since commissioning the wet concentrator in 1999, there have been many typical operational challenges to maximising valuable heavy mineral (VHM) recovery. These include: varying in pit feed grades, different slimes types and volumes, sizing extremes between VHM and trash minerals and decreased equipment reliability handling rocky ore. These issues were successfully mitigated by: in pit extraction strategies, upgrade of the de-sliming circuit, thickener modifications and flocculent changes, installing upgraded and additional spiral capacity, and various Feed Preparation Plant screening initiatives. Combined with the ingenuity, persistence and patience of the operating team, VHM recovery >95 per cent has been achieved.However, typical processing challenges have not been the only hurdles. Reduced rainfall and water availability has necessitated the strategic co-disposal of tailings and slime to increase the speed of water recovery: groundwater abstraction and water storage strategies have also been altered. With an observed reduction in the speed and magnitude of groundwater recharge, overburden backfill scheduling has become a priority mine planning function.Combined with the above challenges, the prevailing foreign exchange rate and mineral product prices have impacted profitability. At the height of the Global Financial Crisis in 2009, major changes to the operating strategy were made to maintain a viable dry mining operation in 2010. Working with the mining contractor the existing scraper and semi-fixed Feed Preparation Plant set up was replaced with a movable in pit dozer trap facility. The end result of changes to the mining method and primary screening was a ten per cent reduction in unit costs. This article will elaborate on some of the above mentioned challenges and successes achieved over the past ten years of operating the Cooljarloo North Mine.

"Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM) is located 820 km from Perth, 220 km from Kalgoorlie—Boulder and 55 km south of Laverton in Western Australia. The SDGM main pit had successfully operated since 1997 and was due to be completed during 2012. An opportunity existed to extract the high-grade crown pillar – 600 kt @ 7 g/t for 135 koz by either open pit or underground methods.The crown pillar was the 60 m (vertically) thick remaining part of the high-grade Cosmo orebody between the top of the paste filled underground mine stopes and the planned base of the final open pit shell.There were two major difficulties being considered when choosing the underground or open pit options:a major wall failure in the upper section of the main pit wall directly above the crown pillar restricting access from the base of the open pit to the top of the crown pillarimpact of a high rainfall event while the crown pillar was being mined from either surface or underground resulting in flooding of the underground mine workings.This paper will discuss the following issues:the process to identify and evaluate the risks in both options using knowledge based modelling software; this technique allowed the evaluation of a complex set of assumptions to arrive at the preferred optionremediation of the Watu failurethe selection of the preferred option and the challenges encountered before, during and after the extraction of the crown pillarthe planning and geotechnical work to ensure the safe extraction of the crown pillarsuccessful outcomes transitioning from open pit operation to a solely underground operation.Citation:Robeson, A, Cowan, M and Brockman, M, 2016. An exploration and preliminary mine design contract was undertaken in Thailand to establish whether adequate lignite resources existed for the addition of future power generation plant through to the year 2000. The lignite ranges in heat value from 14 to 24 MJ/Kg (air dry basis) and occurs in 2 major seams consistituting measured reserves of 536 Mt (with an ash cut-off level of 45 % on an air dry basis) and a strip ratio of 4.1 bank cm/t. The paper describes the pre-planning, programming, equipment used, project management, logistics and exploration methods adopted to undertake the contract in a monsoonal area using Australian drilling and geophysical contractors.

The automated measurement of rock fragmentation particle size distribution in the muck during muck excavation has been developing over the last 16 years. The introduction of stereo camera imaging of the muck has provided improved automated particle segmentation for image-based measurement algorithms. Recently, a new vision system processing algorithm has been developed. The inclusion of 2D texture in the analysis has provided a significant improvement in the definition of the finer size fractions, which has resulted in the automated analysis no longer requiring calibration.The previous stereo vision system algorithm required analysis calibration to account for poor ‘small particle’ definition in the 3D surface profile. This was because of the depth perception limitations of the stereo camera system at greater than 8 m. The new algorithm has been implemented on a number of shovel-installed vision systems, and the algorithm’s performance in automated analysis has been assessed against a diligent manual analysis of the same fragmentation images. The new algorithm provides improved distribution resolution and accuracy.CITATION:Noy, M J, 2015. In heavy minerals separation, the titanium and iron oxide phases are separated from silicates in the coarser particle size range (80 - 150 mm) using magnetic and electrostatic separators. With the ongoing challenge of heavy mineral ore deposits getting increasingly finer in particle size, conventional separation equipment suffers from the ability to process this material at the same throughput rate as coarser particles. A variety of magnetic separation technologies were developed to perform at a much finer particle size range, down to 2 mm in the clay industries mainly to remove titaniferrous oxide particles. Complementing the developments made on the physical aspects of magnetic separation, Cytec Industries has recently developed a ‘bolt-on’ chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation (CEMS). This is to enable separation of finer particles, and weakly paramagnetic titanium phases from diamagnetic silicates that are not amenable to magnetic separation. This paper will provide an outline of the technology, illustrate its ability to process a wide variety of ores, and also discuss plant limitations. The major advantages of chemical enhancement technology to magnetic separation includes: simple dosing equipment extension to existing magnetic separation technology; ability to produce product of comparable quality with improved cost effectiveness, when compared to incumbent flotation; removal of impurity minerals over wider size range; enhanced removal of non-magnetic impurities; and improving the process robustness. Furthermore, chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation has also emerged as a platform for removing impurities at lower levels in other mineral systems as well.

Many mining companies routinely use benchmarking to review their operational activities and associated costs. The aim is to measure operational performance against industry norms, and identify areas where a company is performing better or worse than industry best practice. The goal is continuous improvement.In general, mine technical services, including mining geology activities, are not routinely benchmarked. There are exceptions, such as the cost of drilling per metre and the average discovery cost per unit of metal, but generally mining geology activities are only included indirectly in mining benchmarking studies.Aspects of benchmarking can play a critical role in assisting mining geologists to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the services they provide. Industry norms for many generic mining geology functions have not been developed and measured, and therefore it is impossible to use external benchmarking to assess performance against other mines. But when used in parallel with quantifying the value of mining geology functions and establishing strategic goals for the team, key components of benchmarking methodology can provide essential feedback on how a team is performing against these strategic goals.CITATION:Berry, M, 2014. The use of rock bolts as permanent support has been prohibited by client specifications in several recent large tunnel projects in Australia. The justification for this appears to lie in concerns with proper and verifiable installation procedures rather than concerns with the intrinsic durability of the corrosion protection systems. However, in civil tunnels, preventing the use of permanent rock bolts for long-term support results in the use of cast in place concrete lining which in some instances would otherwise be unnecessary.

Results of investigations on adsorption and desorption of CO M CH and a mixture of the two gases are described.4 Results showed that even when the equilibrium conditions contains 50% Co and 50% CH4, the gas emission in the initia' stages will contain as much as 80% CH . 4 The temperature has a small effect and so also particle size for 1.4-11.2mm. The ratio of CO2/CH gases adsorbed in coal samples depends upon t4he equilibrium pressure and this ratio decreases with pressure. Results of field tests support laboratory studies.

The initiation of cast Pentolite primers by detonating cord has been examined by the combination of two different experimental techniques with computer simulation by the finite element hydrodynamic code DYNA2D. In the first type of experiment, the cord/primer system was placed in a water aquarium, and photographed using a high-speed image converter camera. This highlighted the emergence of the detonation front through the primer surface and the generation of shock waves in the surround- ings. Numerical simulation was used to interpret the experimental record, establishing where the cord had induced buildup to detonation inside the primer. The second experiment used the plate dent test, where the primer was placed in contact with a block of metal (here aluminium), with the resul- tant dent in the metal surface being a measure of primer output. Detailed numerical simulation of this test confirmed that the observed dent was caused by the development of a complex series of shock waves inside the Primer.
