Upstream embankment raises often represent the lowest cost option for increasing the capacity of tailings storage facilities (TSF), but also pose the highest stability risk due to constructing on top of previously deposited tailings.This paper presents an overview of key aspects in the geotechnical investigation and design of upstream raises and some recent lessons learnt from experience across a number of TSFs in Australia. A summary of recommended field investigation and laboratory testing methods is provided with a focus on collecting quality information for design purposes. A strong focus is given in developing an accurate assessment of pore water pressures, which, if not correctly understood can have disastrous consequences on tailings strength parameter interpretation and wall stability assessment in static and post-seismic conditions.The assessment of the contractive or dilative shearing behaviour of the tailings material and rigorous interpretation of design characteristic values are presented. The Australian Centre for Minesite Rehabilitation Research (ACMRR) was established through a mining industry initiative to meet the need of industry, governments and the community for sustainable systems for land affected by exploration, mining and mineral processing activities. The Centre, which is a consortium of the major groups associated with mining rehabilitation research in Australia, has a focus on both strategic research and technology transfer and combines a wide range of multidisciplinary skills covering engineering and the physical and biological sciences. The paper briefly describes the goals, structure, expertise and research and technology transfer activities of the Centre. The major research program areas of waste rock dump and final void stability, acid mine drainage, tailings disposal, and remediation of ecosystem reconstruction are described in the context of national Priorities.

This paper describes the possibility of the application of flotation to the separation of monazite from xenotime and of columbite from ferberite, which have been said to be difficult with generally used physical beneficiation methods. For Malaysian monazite and xenotime samples, a great difference is observed between the flotation recoveries at pH 7.5 using 1.0 x 10-4mol/1 dodecylammonium chloride (DAC). The grade and recovery of columbite in the binary flotation with both minerals result in 85 per cent and 67 per cent in the cleaning froth and 91 per cent and 51 per cent in the re-cleaning froth, without adding any scavenging stages. For monazite samples from various localities, the flotability is dominated by the electrostatic interaction between mineral surface and collector ion using DAC as collector, but the singular decrease of flotation is observed in the sample of which the crystallinity is low and the surface structure is rugged and complex. Otherwise, ferric ion in the flotation system probably dissolved from mineral is found to activate the flotation using sodium dodecylsulfate as collector. For columbite and ferberite, the separation is judged possible at pH 3.0 using 1.0 x 10'3mo1/l sodium oleate (NaOl) from the single flotation results of each mineral. In the binary flotation, however, columbite recovery in the froth is greatly diminished below that expected. This would be because NaOl is prevented from adsorbing on the columbite surface of which the charge is transformed more negative side by the specific adsorption of the tungstate ion dissolved from ferberite.

"There have always been development projects that fall short of expectations. In the last decade, we have seen more than the usual number of mining and oil/gas development projects taking significantly longer to develop and costing materially more than expected. The recent resource-equity market slump proves that investors are now far more cautious about investing new capital in the mineral and petroleum resources sector.What have we learned since 2005? Why have projects missed their targets? Why do investors often feel misled?Valuation of a project and the estimation of value is a more complex process than the evaluation of the merits of project development. The merit of project development can be clear from a prefeasibility evaluation, but this is no reason to skip the rigour of a feasibility study. The valuation of any project that is developed with any added risk should be discounted for this added risk.The development of a project impacts on other stakeholders, and the indirect cost of these impacts can have material implications for the cost structure, time and ultimate valuation of the project for its financial backers. The development of new projects (and thereby supply) can also have an impact on commodity prices, and therefore an impact on returns for financial backers.This paper will provide commentary on the author’s experiences and observations as a project developer and operator for 25 years, before becoming a project financier a decade ago.CITATION:Rozman, L I, 2016. The article presents results of thermodynamic calculations and laboratory studies, focusing on the cobalt behaviour during oxidative smelting of copper-nickel mattes. The compositions of the studied solutions are related to the products formed during the second stage of the converting process of copper-nickel matte at the Nadezhdinsky Metallurgical Plant (NMP) of MMC Norilsk Nickel company. These sulfide products typically contain from 1.5 to 12 wt per cent of iron. The obtained experimental results and thermodynamic calculations indicate that adjusting the CaO ratio to increase the proportion of CaO or complete replacement of SiO2 with fluxes containing CaO leads to a significant increase in cobalt recovery rates in the matte phase (with an iron concentration of 2.5 wt per cent) raising them from 30 per cent to 45 per cent. Meanwhile, the recovery rates of copper and nickel remain constant.

THIS note gives comments on the paper by Kitaev et al on p. 68 of this book and compares results with those obtained by ourselves. We wish to say that the authors are to be congratulated on their sophisticated approach to an important problem and that it complements our efforts on flow maldistribution.1-5 It is our view that Eqs. (1)-(5) on p. 69 are impressive, but unfortunately with present day computers and computational facilities, it would be quite impractical to contemplate the numerical solution of these. Eq. (8) in the authors' paper, on p. 70, does provide the logical starting point for tackling flow maldistribution problems and strictly speaking this equation is more accurate than Eq. (1) in our paper in this book. We note in passing that there is direct experimental evidence to support the contention that our Eq. (1) is at least a reasonable approximation and one may question in a practical sense whether the refinement afforded by Eq. (8) in the paper by Kitaev et a/ is justified. While one must readily accept the appropriateness of Eq. (8) of Kitaev et al as a starting point, the subsequent mathematical manipulation by the authors is open to serious criticism. In order to solve this complex, non-linear equation Kitaev et al postulated irrotational flow, which afforded considerable simplification. One can argue simply on physical grounds that the assumption of irrotational flow is inappropriate, a fact which should be readily apparent on inspection of the flow fields shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of Kitaev's paper. It follows that while the starting point through the use of Eq. (8) is correct the results derived from this starting point may be suspect because of the erroneous nature of the irrotational flow assumption.

In-situ recovery (ISR) is accepted and applied across many geographies, and approximately 50% of the world’s uranium is currently extracted by using an ISR method (World Nuclear Association, 2014). The low environmental impact, the elimination of risk for mine workers and the fact that all of the lowest-cost producers of uranium use an ISR approach should raise interest from traditional miners (IAEA, 2014). However, the broader application of ISR to other commodities and mineral systems remains limited. A number of demonstration (experimental) copper projects have been undertaken (Sinclair and Thompson, 2015) with a few copper projects in Arizona being close to demonstration (Florence, 2018 and Gunnison, 2018). Evidence of very few economically operating ISR copper projects can be found (for example, the Russian, Uralgidromed OAO, built by the Russian Copper Company in 2005 and operated as an ISR facility from the Gumeshevskoye deposit (Russia Mining, 2018). A number of gold deposits, particularly paleochannel deposits, have also been considered for ISR, but, to the best of our knowledge, only limited demonstration and no commercial operations have been established, yet (Kuhar et al, 2018 and references therein).CITATION:Robinson, D J and Kuhar, L L, 2018. The mining industry is facing a variety of geological, technological and social challenges. Future deposits show a general tendency towards increasing depth with complex ores and decreasing grades. One promising approach to deal with low-grade ores is bioleaching in the form of heap and dump operations. Bioleaching is already a state-of-the-art technique, especially for the extraction of copper from sulfide ores. The next step in the development of this technology will be its application as an in situ technology. First attempts to adapt this technology in underground mining in the form of stoping and block caving have already been made. Both methods have to be carried out adjacent to conventional mining operations and therefore require much effort regarding drift development as well as extraction and transport. The adaption of bioleaching as a borehole mining method is the next step to establish an innovative in situ technique to meet future challenges.The Freiberg University of Mining and Technology established the Biohydrometallurgical Centre for Strategic Elements (BHMZ) to foster interdisciplinary research along the whole biohydrometallurgical process chain. In general, 13 different university institutes and several associated groups with about 30 PhD students are mainly focusing on the extraction of indium and germanium from deposits, tailings and recycling material. One of the core projects within the BHMZ is the design and implementation of an underground in situ bioleaching testing facility.This paper demonstrates the potential of in situ bioleaching under technological aspects. Furthermore, different conditioning methods to increase the permeability of the orebody will be explained, and the BHMZ’s underground testing facility will be presented.CITATION:Schlueter, R and Mischo, H, 2015. Following discovery in October 2004, commencement of development in February 2007 and first ore production in mid 2007, the Trident gold deposit, located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, has now been successfully mined for over three years. Three years of operational history has enabled the performance of the Trident underground mine to be reconciled against the mine plan and strategy proposed for the original feasibility study.The Trident deposit, initially based on two lode systems known as the Eastern Zone and Western Zone, has been continuously drilled, interpreted and re-interpreted over the period and as a result the addition of the Athena, Apollo and Artemis lode systems as well as numerous smaller scale lodes has been realised. The first three years has seen the Trident underground mine quickly move up to its 1 Mtpa design production rate. The mine plan and strategy used in the initial feasibility study and subsequently implemented, required sufficient flexibility to enable modification and optimisation to mine plans as ore zones were further defined. The ability to modify the mining plans has enabled Avoca to achieve its mining targets at Trident. With over 250 000 ounces gold produced to January 2010, the company is well positioned to achieve its ten year vision associated with the Higginsville Gold Project.This paper offers an account of operational experiences whilst providing comparison to assumptions and methodologies used in the original feasibility study. The paper is a sequel to a paper presented at the Tenth Underground Operators’ Conference held in Launceston, Tasmania titled Development Strategy of the Trident Underground Gold Mine.

Gunpowder Copper Limited processes 1,000 tonne/day of Mammoth ore in a conventional flot- ation concentrator. Run of mine ore is prepared for flotation by three stages of crushing and two stages of ball milling. The concentrate, in which the primary copper mineral is chalcocite, is solar dried and exported to Japan. The history of operation is summarised, and plant practice and metallurgical problems are discussed.

The leaching of gold in alkaline aqueous cyanide solutions may be reduced significantly by the passivation of the gold by a surface layer of polymeric aurocyanide. This passivation of the gold is typically countered by the presence of Pb(+2) species in solution, which may be present as an impurity in the solution, or specifically added for this purpose. The speciation and availability of Pb(+2) in typical cyanide leach solutions is illustrated as a function of pH, and the presence of S(-2), S(+6), Cu(+1) and Ag(+1) species. The probable role of the Pb(+2) species in efficient gold leaching is discussed.

At the proposed Crandon Project, mill tailings would be depyritised for upland disposal. The resulting pyrite concentrate would be disposed of in the underground workings as a cement-amended paste backfill. In the long term, the underground workings would be flooded and the potential for the paste backfill to generate acid would be limited. However, while the mine is operational, there is potential for oxygen ingress to the backfill that may lead to sulfide mineral oxidation and acid generation. A series of humidity cell tests were completed to assess the potential for groundwater contamination. To assess effects of surface area on oxidation, the humidity cell tests were conducted on moulded cubes of paste backfill. The tests were terminated at different intervals, and the cubes were dissected and examined mineralogically. Various leach extraction procedures were also used to assess the progress of oxidation and secondary mineralisation within the paste backfill. The test results showed that: the cement amendment significantly contributes to acid neutralisation and results in a lag in excess of one year before the onset of acidic conditions (in comparison to less than three weeks for the pyrite concentrate); the depth of oxidation in the paste backfill is restricted to about 1 mm after 107 weeks of testing; and secondary minerals form a distinct ærindÆ at the surface of the paste backfill. The results indicate that acid generation in the backfilled stopes would be minimal. The importance of including the surface area effect in the testing (ie using moulded cubes) is clearly demonstrated.

In response to requests from the iron ore mining industry, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Division of Mineral Physics has developed a number of bulk analysis techniques in which analyses are obtained directly from ore samples weighing many kilograms or from ore located on conveyor belts.Because penetrating neutron and gamma radiation is used, measurements are obtained from a large volume of ore, which ensures thal the analyses are represelllative of the bulk.Two different gamma-ray techniques have been developed to measure iron ore grade. The first is based on backscallering of 60CO gamma rays, while the second involves measurement of the annihilation radiation which arises when the ore is irradiated wilh 226Ra gamma rays. Both techniques measure the iron concentration with an accuracy (1 s) of better than 0.4% Fe.A thermal-neutron irradiation technique using a 252Cf neutron source has been developed for the simultaneous determination of iron and the aluminium impurity (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines on a conveyor bell. Because the conveyor speed must not exceed about 0.05 m/s, if good accuracy for AI2O3 is required, an auxiliary analysis bell is required Lo avoid inLerference with normal ore processing. Dynamic trials have demonstrated that accuracies of 0.6% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3 can be obtained.

The development and application of new effective environmentally friendly reagents for the flotation of thin and ultrathin mineral components is an urgent task. The analysis of the nomenclature of chemicals, including flotation reagents and flocculants, showed that water-soluble polymers (WSP) might be used in flotation separation of fine grinding products containing non-ferrous and precious metals. Water-soluble polymers that are responsive to temperature changes are the most attractive as reagents during flotation. These are the thermo-responsive polymers or thermomorphic polymers. The presence of nitrogen and oxygen atoms in the polymer molecule contributes to the formation of a coordination bond with non-ferrous and precious metals. A research conducted at the ICEMR RAS within the framework of the scientific school of Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Chanturia helped to develop a method of flotation of finely ground mineral particles containing valuable components using modified thermomorphic polymers. The paper focuses on the experimental study of poly (vinyl caprolactam) (PVC) as a flotation reagent for gold recovery from finely ground mineral products. PVC is a ready-made water-soluble thermosensitive polymer that does not require complex synthesis. PVC has a high ability to form complexes in an aqueous environment when heated. According to experimental data, the polymer interacts with gold nanoparticles, contributing to the extraction of gold from fine mineral products and the tailings that makes it perspective as an additional flotation agent for the processing of gold-containing ores.

Heavy fuel oil has been injected into blast furnaces in order to reduce the coke rate, to improve productivity and to control the furnace heat condition. However, in the first oil crisis at the end of 1973, it became necessary to develop an injection technique of new fuels into blast furnaces to reduce oil consumption. In Kobe Steel, Ltd., it was thought that the injection of a coal-oil mixture (COM) into blast furnaces could be developed in a shorter time than pulverised coal injection. The development of this technique was under- taken in 1974, and COM was injected through two tuyeres of the No.3 blast furnace at the Kobe works in 1977 and 1978. In addition, in order to study the combust- ibility of COM and the phenomena in the tuyere zone, the development of a gas sampling method was under- taken in 1975. In this paper, the results of the injection tests and gas sampling tests are reported.

The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. However, at IonicRE, we hold a different perspective. We understand that safety is far from easy. We recognise the need to emphasise the importance of understanding and conveying the inherent difficulties of working safely. We are committed to implementing processes that support individuals in achieving our safety objective of eliminating fatalities and permanently disabling injuries. To build resilience and sustainability into safety performance, we draw parallels with the principles underpinning sustainable and exceptional production performance. Achieving sustainable safety performance demands effective leadership, meticulous planning, adept management, genuine care and unwavering commitment. We’ve leveraged various tools and techniques, such as DISC theory, Maslow’s hierarchy, process control, Kaizen, Six Sigma and Kirkpatrick’s 4 levels, among others, to facilitate this improvement. There methods play a pivotal role in developing a Safety Blueprint for enhanced safety performance. This paper provides an overview of IonicRE’s Safety Blueprint, a strategic framework for developing our safety capability. Our capability is underpinned by three key pillars. Firstly, a comprehensive risk management approach is imperative, encompassing the understanding of hazards, the identification of threats to our people and the associated risks. Secondly, it entails providing and enforcing accountability to sustain our safety capability. Lastly, it involves constructing an effective defence system against threats and harm. Implementing these pillars requires a meticulously devised change process. Anticipating resistance and potential setbacks, we underscore the importance of having the right people and a wellcommunicated vision for safety at IonicRE. A Safety Blueprint serves as a detailed plan outlining the path toward a future goal. At IonicRE, we contend that safety in the mining industry has generally lacked a coherent and effective Safety Blueprint – a comprehensive plan to navigate the journey toward a destination. Drawing parallels with NASA’s detailed plan for landing a man on the moon safely, we question why, as an industry, we cannot similarly eliminate fatalities. While progress has been made in the last century, we must not wait another 50 years to eradicate fatalities from our industry. Examining Safe Work Australia data from 2008 reveals that 47 per cent of mining fatalities result from vehicle activity and 40 per cent stem from individuals being struck by an object. As of December 7, 2023, seven lives have been lost in the mining industry in Australia this year, indicating a stubborn trend mirroring 2022, with limited improvement over the past 25 years. These incidents are not isolated or unexpected. We understand the hazards and controls, yet fatalities persist. IonicRE considers that the mining industry stands at a critical juncture – do we accept a plateau in mining safety performance, or do we rethink our approach? At IonicRE, we are thoroughly reassessing the hazards that threaten our people, systematically redefining effective risk control measures and establishing a robust framework to hold individuals accountable for the effective implementation of the control measure.

The broad biodiversity of our country is manifested through several different biological forms. From the villages of Portovelo and San Gerardo in the southern part of Ecuador, some samples of water and rocks were taken in order to identify the native micro-organisms which take part in the natural processes of leaching of sulfurous minerals. The presence of Spp Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was determined together with a fungi sample which has not yet been characterised by the current workers. These have been isolated, grown, experimented and conserved in appropriate cryogenic environments. The present research intends to study the individual and group adaptation of the bacteria and the fungi upon suitable systems of agitation and ventilation, in combination with several different concentrations of refractory auriferous samples. These refractory samples were derived from old mine workings and the experiments were performed to test the effectiveness of the isolated species in bioleaching as pre-treatments upon the cyaniding processes. The capability of these bacteria to develop in environments with high concentrations of cyanide has also been studied, to investigate the possible use of bacteria in the biodegradation of cyanide. The presence of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in acid conditions has already been tested in advance, however, the presence of fungi species in these conditions are studied to prove their efficiency as another alternative for the bioleaching of refractory auriferous minerals and Baptista, 1998).

A commercial enargite concentrate was mechanically milled in inert and oxidising atmospheres for 10 hours. No substantial effect was observed in either an inert atmosphere or in air other than a broadening and weakening of the diffraction peaks. Milling dry in oxygen or wet in air was dramatic with a significant reaction occurring which formed arsenolite, As2O3 and CuSO4.5H2O, both of which are readily soluble.A small amount of SO2 was also formed. Dissolution in acid left CuS as the major phase implying incomplete oxidation. The small fraction of tennantite in the sample was comparatively resistant to oxidation.

We offer these notes as a practical contribution. All the arguments we advance have been tested by practical experience.In its preparation we realised that our subject was one of such importance and covered so wide a field that, dealt with by one of us alone, it might easily have been too much for him, so we have endeavoured, by mutual criticism and advice and a pooling of ideas, to bring forward a few points that may be of advantage to members. If any of the paper is of benefit to mining on the "Golden Mile," or elsewhere, we shall feel amply repaid for our efforts.It is obvious to all that the longer the machine is working productively per shift the greater the return, to all concerned; the machine-man himself and the company. Furthermore, if a man commences a shift with a definite objective in view; for instance, to bore and fire a specific cut, which he recognizes will give him a good financial return, then that man will exercise all his capabilities to attain that objective.In this paper we hope to demonstrate the value to the machine-man of the knowledge of the capabilities of each hole he bores, so that he will be enabled to utilize his drilling time to the greatest advantage. Also, we hope to show that such drilling time can be advantageously extended.After the war, with the influx of new men to the industry, some education on the finer points of machine work may be desirable, and any instruction in this branch must stress the realization of the value of each hole.We realise that most of those present have a sound workable knowledge of machine-mining, and we are not trying to teach anyone the fundamentals of machine work, but we would like to bring to their attentIon some of the finer points which we believe are very important.The machine-man has control of gear of a capital value of over £150, and the use or misuse of that material has a direct bearing on working costs. Therefore it is imperative that the capital outlay is gainfully employed.A "bogger" in charge of a 5/- shovel engaged unproductively is bad enough. How much worse for £150 worth of gear to be not fully productive.Figs. 1 and 2 demonstrate angles of break, and the full realization of the importance of this angle is essential to our paper. Although these Sketches are two-dimensional, we hope they will be sufficient to demonstrate our meaning. We will pass over them as briefly as possible.Fig. 1 shows three holes asked to perform an identical task.(a) 7-ft. hole bored 2 ft. into solid ground-will not come out.(b) 4-ft. hole bored 1 ft. from solid ground-will come out easily.(c) 5-ft. hole bored to solid ground-the best that can be expected under general conditions encountered.The angle of break is a right-angle, normal to direction of hole.
