This paper explores options worthy of consideration in the management of S02 produced from the gold roasting operations at Kalgoorlie. Some of the options have relevance to other sources of SO2 in the region, eminating from nickel smelting operations. The paper considers the following options: 1. Capture of SO2 within the roaster where sulphur-containing reaction products are mixed with the calcine. 2. Processes in which the sulphur-containing products are bled separately from the stack for further treatment or for dumping as a waste. These include: Seawater-based scrubbing of SO2; Sulphuric acid manufacture as a feedstock for fertiliser production or for leaching of bauxite; its use as Caro's acid: and the production of value-added sulphur-containing reagents eg liquid S02 and sulphonic acid.

Currently all engineering schools face a common problem, an ever expanding technological base which must be presented to students within a fixed time period. Traditionally the programmes of study taken by engineering students destined for employment within the mineral industry include formal instruction in aspects of management to an extent greater than that presented in other engineering disciplines. Providing an adequate coverage of an expanding technological base within a fixed time span can lead to a reduction in the time available for 'non-technical' subjects, such as 'management'. This situation calls for periodic review of course contents and allocations of time. Following consultation with an Advisory Committee representing the mineral industry, mining research establishments, and kindred teaching institutions, the University of Melbourne has revised its mining programme. For some underground structures, the use of the plane strain assumption in stress analyses may not be justified. The finite element method and photoelasticity have been used to obtain complete 3-D solutions, but, for various reasons, neither method has found universal use. The boundary integral equation method (B.I.E.M.) can be more efficient and economical than the finite element method for 3-D problems involving large volume to surface area ratios. A B.I.E.M. program developed for calculating stresses and deformations in infinite elastic media has been used to determine the 3-D distributions of stress around T- and Y- junctions of circular tunnels in stress fields in which the ratios of horizontal to vertical stress are 0, 0.33, 1.0 and 2.0. For the T- junction considered,stress concentrations at the intersection are approximately twice the plane strain values. Except where horizontal field stresses are high, the stresses in both tunnels approximate the plane strain values at about two tunnel diameters from the point of intersection of the tunnel centre lines. The stresses in the two branches reach those for the corresponding plane strain, two parallel tunnel case two diameters from the point of intersection of thq inner tunnel walls. Very high stress concentra- tions occur in the pillar of rock between the inner tunnel walls near the point of intersection.

The uranium markets are at present well covered by available producers. However the predicted increase in demand, recently reinforc- ed by the Arab oil crisis, will by, the early 1980s'outdistance supply. Current trends are towards light water reactors with-fast breeder reactors not expected to make any significant impact to the mid 1980s. The proposed lifting of the US embargo on the use of foreign uranium in US reactors will expand the market available to non US producers. A balancing in supply and demand worldwide will probably occur in the early 1980s. Australia's potential producers at present hold about 20 percent of the worlds U308 resources. Three companies, have contracts to supply nearly 10 900 tonnes of U308 between now and 1986 which represents about 1 percent of the predicted demand to 1986. Australian producers need to establish themselves more firmly in the market place in order that other countries will not replace us. Contracts can be written now which will allow for world market prices to be paid in the future, thus protecting the Australian producer.

The Greenhouse Effect, with its potential for global warming, is strongly linked to industrial carbon dioxide emissions. Global carbon mass balances indicate that absorption in sea water is the major natural sink of carbon dioxide. However the surface waters of the oceans are close to chemical equilibrium with the atmosphere with respect to carbon dioxide, while the deep ocean waters are not. Consequently, the transfer of carbon dioxide from the surface limits the rate at which the oceans can absorb carbon dioxide. It is proposed that direct transfer of carbon dioxide from industrial installations to deep ocean waters be evaluated as an interim measure to slow the rate of increase of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere and hence allow time for the development of sustainable industrial practices. As an aid to thinking on the development of suitable technology, equilibrium calculations are presented which demonstrate that sea water in equilibrium with flue gases will dissolve six times the quantity of carbon dioxide that is dissolved in equilibrium with the ambient atmosphere. Sea water saturated with calcium carbonate and in equilibrium with flue gases will dissolve 20 times the quantity of carbon dioxide that is dissolved in equilibrium with the ambient atmosphere. However the absolute concentrations of dissolved carbon dioxide are still very small.

New Zealand Steel Mining Limited operates two independent sand mining operations on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. (Fig. 1)Waikato North Head 30km south of Auckland supplies ironsand concentrate as the raw feed for New Zealand Steel's works at Glenbrook, and Taharoa 70km further south, exports ironsand concentrate to Japan. Taharoa uses two sets of six low pressure Warman centrifugal pumps in series to load bulk ore carriers 3km off shore through two underwater pipelines.Waikato North Head delivers the ironsand to Glenbrook l8kms through a 200mm ID buried pipeline using two stages of high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) pumping.A high level of operating and maintenance expertise has been developed since commissioning the two systems which are proving to be reliable, efficient and of minimal impact environmentally.

Differences in the gold contents of sub-sample duplicates, derived from a single bulk sample are a function of analytical and random error, inhomogeneity within the bulk and natural variations in the distribution of particluate gold. By minimising bulk sample inhomogeneity and determining analytical precision, the residual natural variation may be modelled statistically to give an estimate of Bold particle sizes.

Problems associated with gas management become more significant as exploitation of coal reserves in the Bowen Basin in Australia becomes deeper. At Oaky North mine, relocation of production from one area of the mine to another with a higher gas content required the use of pre-drainage, post drainage and inertisation techniques to enable production activities to continue largely uninterrupted. Innovative surface to inseam drilling techniques were developed for pre-drainage of reserves close to mine workings and have proven to be largely successful. The gas management techniques adopted and specific experience gained are discussed in this paper.

The investigations of the Leningrad ruining lilstitute on this problem are carrying out in the following main directions: 1) The analysis and study of contaminants migration at particular sites of mining development; 2) The working out of theoretical and me- thodical basic principles of aquifers migration tests; 3) The work- ing out of methods of the forcasting of groundwater pollution pro- cesses; 4) The theoretical and uethodical substantiation of hydro- geological observations of groundwater pollution processes; 5) The wort ing out of the measures at the groundwater control and their rational use at the particular sites of mining development. The research that have been carried out by the present moment have covered the wide range of wining and geological conditions -- as from the point of view of specific genetic types of water-be- aring rocks (porous, fissured and fissured-porous), as well as from the point of view of pollution sources (surface waste water basins and underground basins of non-standard water) and the cha- racter of the latter's migration (tracers, physically neutral ef- fluents, heavy or light ones). The combination of specialized mi- gration tests and observations carryed out at uoayi, sites, as well as the following ar~,alysis o:i the data of field study allowed to get useful theoretical, methodical and practical results on the all directions above mentioned, ns the summing up of these results the author proposed the concept of controlled ground :ester polluti on. Roof bolting with resin bonded bolts has been developed extensively in French coal mines. There are three aspects of this development: 1. The reason for and the care used in the development of roof bolting from use as a reinforcement in a classical arched roadway to use as the only support in roadways in ad- vance of the working face (the roadway being reinforced behind the face); 2. The problems encountered and studied, such as choice of boltable roadways and determination of the technical data in designing a roof bolting pattern; 3. Only because roof bolting has been controlled by safety rules, and especially by accurate measurement of strata behaviour, has this system of support been expanded aapidly in France since 1967.

Traditionally trucks have dominated haulage in open pit mines. Only recently have conveyors begun to be used in the long haul and high lift duties of surface mines. Steep angle conveyors are proven versatile systems for elevating or lowering materials continuously at steep angles to 90¦. This paper describes the design of a bucket-type steep angle conveyor that was developed as a joint research project between the Western Australian School of Mines and the Maanshan Institute of Mining Research in China. The steep angle conveyor can be used as a viable option for transporting blocky ore from open pit mines. A pilot conveyor was constructed and tested to determine its technical and operational feasibility. Furthermore, a computer model based on Matlab mathematical modelling software was developed to simulate the performance of the pilot conveyor. The model enabled to determine the design parameters of industry-scale conveyors to yield satisfactory performance. These conveyors become very cost-effective for those mines having large mine lives and depths greater than about 500 metres.

Consolidation Coal Company pioneered the development of the horizontal drilling system and licensed the technology in the U.S. A. and to Du Pont (Australia) for commercial production. This paper discusses the most recent developments in the equipment design, especially the borehole telemetry system, known as the Downhole Drill Monitor (DDM).

Since 1981 two single entry roadways have been driven at Ellalong Colliery for a total distance of 1 030 metres. They were driven at a height of 1.73 metres within the 3.7 metres thick Greta Seam using a Dosco In-Seam Miner (I.S.M.). Ventilation of the drivage was accomplish- ed by an exhausting fan in series with steel ducting and flexible ducting in the immediate face area. The air quantities provided at the face were more than adequate to comply with the requirements of -the auxiliary fan rules and the Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended. The experience gained in these drivages demonstrated that the ventilation of long single entry headings can be practically and safely achieved using existing equipment.

The Fosterville goldfield, situated 25 km east of Bendigo, Victoria was at its peak between 1894-1910 with some 47 600 ounces produced (Figure 1). Since that time intermittent mining and tailings retreatment was undertaken until Bendigo Gold Associates delineated a viable resource and commenced an open cut heap leaching operation in early 1991. Unfortunately they encountered financial difficulties and Perseverance Exploration purchased the mine in April 1992. Perseverance operated a successful heap leach operation nearby Nagambie, 100 km east of Fosterville. Based on its acquired heap leaching experience, Perseverance Exploration was able to instigate operational changes to create a successful small gold heap leach operation. The major change was the using of the original multi-use leach pad as a single-use leach pad. The available data allows for a comparison of the two operating systems.

Changes in mining technology have led to an increase in the number of underground sulfide dust explosions reported in Australian and overseas mines. Samples collected at the Elura mine consisting primarily of pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite and galena, were tested in 8 litre explosion chamber. The dusts were found to be capable of producing dangerous dust explosions with maximum explosion pressures of 440 kPa and rates of pressure rise of 5200 kPa/s. The hazards of a sulfide dust explosion are associated with the pressure wave and flame front of the explosion and the toxic gases remaining after the explosion.

The Windarra nickel deposits known to date comprise two sulphide orebodies located at Mount Windarra and South Windarra. These orebodies, which are 15 km apart, lie within an ultramafic complex at or near its footwall contact with a banded iron formation. The Windarra deposits are 270 km north-northeast of Kalgoorlie in West- ern Australia which was the centre of a major nickel exploration programme fol- lowing the discovery of nickel deposits at Kambalda in 1966. Surface indications of the Mount Windarra orebody were discovered in 1969 by Mr. Ken Shirley while prospect- ing the Laverton area for Poseidon Ltd. (then NL). The mineralisation was loc- ated by systematic prospecting for goss- anous material associated with aero-mag- netic anomalies and ultramafic rocks. The South Windarra deposit was dis- covered in 1971 by the Union-Hanna- Homestake Joint Venture, by exploring along the strike extension of the mount Windarra ultramafic-banded iron format- ion contact. Prob- lems occurred due to delay in supply of essen- tial rock support materials from overseas and alternative methods using locally available materials were developed.
