Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd, a wholly owned Government of India Enterprise, was established in the year 1976 to develop mine and plant facilities to produce 7.5 Mtpa of high-grade iron ore concentrate at Kudremukh. The mine and plant facilities were commissioned in 1980. In view of high demand for iron oxide pellets in iron and steel industry worldwide and as a diversification activity, a pelletisation plant of 3.0 Mtpa capacity was commissioned in the year 1987 at Mangalore for production of high-quality blast furnace and direct reduction grade pellets for export. The pellet plant capacity has been increased to 3.5 Mtpa by technological improvement which included installation of roll press for quality and productivity improvement. In addition, the pellet capacity is being increased to 4 Mtpa by the addition of Shaft Pelletising Furnace plant.

The Hill 50 Gold Mine is situated at Boogardie, 3 miles on a bearing of 295 degrees from; Mount Magnet township. Mount Magnet lies 300 miles north-north-east of Perth, Western Australia (Fig. 1).The older workings of the mine may be identified with those of Sirdar, Gold Mining Lease 696M The Sirdar had been worked before 1902 though no records remain, and irom 1903 to 1912 about a thousana tons at a grade of 6' 2 dwt. was extracted annually; by the end of 1918 6,225 oz. of gold had been obtained from the milling of 17,852 tons of ore. In view of these yields, and the length and width of the lode, this mine was early recognized as one of the most promising in the district. From 1919 to 1924 the ground,including G.M.L. 1282M, was held as Mt. Zion G.M.L. 1183M.The Hill 50 Gold Mine N.L. company took up the workings as Hill 50 G.M.L. 1282M in 1934 and have continued operations to the date of writing. To the end of 1956 the Hill 50 Gold Mine had yielded 982,106 tons of ore for a return of 448,'602 fine oz. of gold.The mine has been described by: J utson (1915), Feldtmann (1920), Johnson (1949), and Finucane (1953). Finucane (1953) details the mine structure to a depth of 414 ft. The author was able to examine the mine to a depth of 1305 ft. Detailed main level mapping to the 1060 level and a detailed surface examination have revealed aspects of the structure which were previously obscure.

The labour question is one that has caused mine managers much thought and anxiety and is likely to continue to do so as long as human beings exist. The difficulty is to devise some arrangement whereby the interests of miner and mine ownerare identical. Mines cannot be worked without capital, and capital is no good without labour, yet, though both have the mine in common, their interests are not exactly the same. Some men are happy so long as they can scrape through by exerting themselves as little as possible, but capitalists do not work mines for charity, they want some return for their money.Where a large number of men are employed there are bound to be examples of all sorts, good and bad, and it is because one cannot depend on all, that different methods of employment have to be adopted. Which method is selected depends to a great extent on the labour market, local conditions, nature of the ore and the way in which it occurs.A big step towards success is obtained by securing the services of good bosses, not only those who know how work should be done, but men who have a knowledge of human nature. It is a big mistake to be too lenient with a man, also to be unnecessarily harsh. Although the pattern of metamorphic zones south of the Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault is much obscured by polymetamorphism, displacement of the orthopyroxene isograd by the fault agrees with the displacement of a horizon of "banded aplite" mapped by Andrews (1922). A dextral transcurrent component of 20,000 ft is indicated.INTRODUCTIONThe east-west Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault (Andrews, 1922; King and Thomson, 1953), one of the major geological structures in the Broken Hill district, New South Wales, cuts across the general north-easterly strike of outcrops and fold structures of the Willyama Complex. The degree of shearing and recrystallization in its unusually wide crush zone and the manner in which adjacent rock units and structures have been dragged into conformity with its strike denote considerable movement on the fault. Information concerning the nature of this movement is of critical importance in the search for possible continuations or repetitions of lead-zinc mineralization south-west of Broken Hill.A transcurrent movement of 20,000 ft, with the southern block moving west, was estimated by Andrews (1922), who correlated prominent outcrops of "banded aplite" at The Pinnacles (north of the fault) and Big Hill (south of the fault). Displacement of this order, however, does not seem sufficient to explain the extent and character of the fault zone. Recent chemical and petrological studies of the banded aplites at The Pinnacles and Big Hill by Vernon (19B1) confirmed their similarity, but indicated an origin by metasomatic replacement of pre-existing folded and metamorphosed rocks. The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. In preparing this paper, the writer hopes to achieve two main objects. Firstly, an indication of the desirable features of coke from the viewpoint of a blast furnace operator should be of assistance and value to those connected with coal and coke research, coal mining, the manufacture of coke and the production of iron. Secondly, it is hoped that the conclusions and opinions expressed herein, which are known to be of a controversial nature, will promote some discussion and thought. In this way, other workers may see fit to contribute and enlarge our general knowledge of Australian coke and its behaviour in blast furnaces.Those properties of coke that are considered to be of importance to blast furnace operation will be examined. Although broadly speaking, the composition and characteristics of coke are inherent in the coals used, any special features of coal preparation and carbonization that affect the resultant coke will be discussed. An attempt will also be made to indicate the effect on blast furnace operation of significant irregularities in these properties.THE FUNCTION OF COKE IN A BLAST FURNACECoke has four important functions in a blast furnace:1. To reduce the oxides of iron and other elements to metal and to provide the carbon absorbed by the iron.2. To supply the necessary heat for the process.3. To provide an open supporting structure in which the descending ore and limestone lie exposed to the action of the ascending gas.4. To provide voidage in the bottom of the furnace, so that iron and slag can accumulate in the hearth.

INTRODUCTIONThe faults described in the following paper are of a somewhat unusual character, and have presented a serious problem both in the development and mining of many ore-bodies on the Eastern side of the Boulder Belt. They are mentioned only briefly in the literature of the field, but were observed by, both Stillwell (1)t and Gustafson (2), and have been studied by other geologists and operators in various parts of the "Belt." Their effect on the lodes of Hamilton Section, Great Boulder Mine, was described by King (3) in 1937, and, during recent years, they have been encountered in most of the Great Boulder workings extending east of the Boulder Dyke.Although this paper is based mainly on a study of faulting and development problems on the Great Boulder mine, the general conclusions reached may be applicable to the solution of similar faulting problems in other mines throughout the field.In order to arrive at a clear understanding of the somewhat complicated relationships which the east-dipping faults bear to the lode systems it will be necessary to give a brief outline of the salient geological and structural features of the "Belt" before proceeding to describe the faults themselves.2. GENERAL GEOLOGYThe most recent descriptions of the geology of Kalgoorlie are those by Stillwell (1) and Gustafson (2) and the reader is referred to these as representing the basis of current knowledge of the geology of the field.The Boulder Belt is comprised of a central core of altered quartz dolerite which is flanked on either side by fine grained greenstones and lavas, usually referred to as the calc schists. Down the centre of the quartz dolerite mass there is an infolded bed of slate (2, p. 105) which has been intruded in lit par lit fashion by albite porphyry; the composite body of slate and porphyry so formed is known as the "Boulder Dyke." Numerous smaller porphyry dykes intrude both the quartz dolerite and the calc schist; these vary in composition and range from chloritised hornblende porphyrites to albite porphyries.The whole of the rock assemblage has been subjected tG a considerable amount of folding, faulting, shearing and fracturing, the greater part of which took place before the formation of the lodes.

The upper amphibolite-grade mctasediments of thc rinaroo area, North Queensland, form part of a regional aurcole to the large Tinaroo Batholith and are the stratigraphic equivalents of the Hodgkinson Formation of gencrally low metamorphic grade. There is no evidence of any lithological unconformity.The higher grade metasediments have a more complex deformation history than is typical for thc surrounding region and this may bc due to one or a combination of two factors; an additional strain componcnt associated wilh the intrusion of Ihe Tinaroo Batholith, or a more marked finite strain response to the overall regional stress field within hotter. more ductile rocks.Four deformational events can be characterized within Ihc Tinaroo Area. Close to Ihe Tinaroo Batholith D1 and D2, arc so strongly developed that they disrupl the continuily of Ihe original Iithological layering. In the aureole region, D1 is strongly overprinted and its original fabric intensity is obscured, but both D2 and D3 display a mappable decrease in intensity away from the granite margin. These three deformations occurred during Carboniferous or early Permian time. D4 is later and only patchily developed.The broad, moderate pressure metamorphic aureole surrounding the Tinaroo Batholith is a typical of the CairnsCooktown group of Permo-Carboniferous granitoids. which usually develop narrow, lower pressure contact aureoles. Two periods of metamorphism are distinguishable. The first reached peak temperatures somewhat greater than 520°C, the second temperatures around 620-630° C immediately adjacent to the granite contact.Several cale-silicate lenses containing scattered scheelite mineralization occur within the area. Scheelite appears to have crystallized at the same time as the cale-silicate minerals, its appearance coinciding with the intrusion of the Tinaroo Batholith. Unlike many "skarn-type" scheelite deposits, the scheelite-bearing cale-silicates are Fe-poor, with no positive correlation between total Fe and W.

At Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd., Townsville, two reverberatory furnaces of 420 tonnes capacity are used to melt 210000 tonnes/year of copper for subsequent anode casting. When the refinery commenced production in1959, these furnaces were of 300 tonnes capacity. The original furnaces featured a silica brick hearth, magnesite and chrome magnesite side 'walls, and a sprung silica brick roof, but were unsatisfactory because of thelow refractory life and high costs. With continuous expansion in production and the incentive to increase furnace life and capacity the design of these furnaces has changed greatly since that time.The present furnaces feature all basic brick, a flat suspended basic brick roof, very extensive use of watercooled copper sections, and are of substantially increased (420 tonnes) capacity. Particular attention has been concentrated on high wear areas such as the taphole, side walls, and charging door jambs. Each furnace in its 24 h cycle, is charged, the copper melted, impurities skimmed off, metal "poled" prior to casting, and cast.The service condition during each of these operations is important in considering furnace refractory life.The improvements in operating practices and furnace 'construction which enabled the capacity of the furnaces to be increased are discussed. The life between major repairs to side walls has increased from 90 charges to300 charges.The scope for future improvement is considered and areas for development are suggested.

Solutions of acetonitrile in water dissolve water soluble copper(I) chloride. Removal of volatile acetonitrile from the resulting solutions, by distillation with low grade steam, precipitates pure copper(I) chloride. This is used to purify a crude copper chloride sublimate from the chlorination of nickel matte but is applicable to other sources of copper(I) chloride. The pure product can be converted to pure copper(I) oxide, copper(II) oxychloride or pure copper metal directly.

This paper gives an overview of the difficulties associated with determining the strength of hard rock pillars. Although a number of pillar design tools are available, pillar collapses still occur. Recent examples of large scale pillar collapses in South Africa were caused by weak partings which traversed the pillars. Currently two different methods to determine the strength of pillars are used namely, empirical equations derived from the back analyses of failed and stable cases and numerical modelling tools with an appropriate failure criteria. Both techniques have their limitations and additional work is required to obtain a better understanding of pillar strength. Empirical methods are popular and easy to use, but care should be exercise that the results are not extrapolated beyond the range of the data which were used to derive them. An example is the Hedley and Grant formula (derived for the Canadian uranium mines) that has been used for many years in the South African platinum and chrome mines (albeit with some adaptation of the K-value) to design the pillar layouts. Very few collapses have nevertheless been reported and it might even be too conservative an assumption of pillar strength in these mines. As an alternative, some engineers strongly advocate the use of numerical techniques to determine pillar strength. A close examination unfortunately reveals that these techniques also rely on many flawed assumptions. An area where numerical modelling is invaluable, however, is to study specific pillar failure mechanisms, such as the influence of weak partings on pillar strength. In conclusion, it appears that neither empirical techniques nor numerical modelling currently provide a solid basis to conduct pillar design. It is therefore recommended that both these techniques be utilised when confronted with a pillar design to obtain the best possible insight into the problem.

Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the "two flow drawdown" technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

There has been much debate in recent years regarding the number of Geology (Earth Science) graduates produced in Australia. The key variable has commonly been assumed to be the placement of graduates in the mineral and petroleum industries. Although not wishing to deny the importance of this element, we contend that Geoscience studies should be given to a wider variety of graduates. The essence is to make students and future citizens more environmentally aware. INTRODUCTION Geoscience is fundamental to exploration and to the well-being of the minerals industry and hence the Australian economy. The value of mineral primary products exports for the past three years has been: 1895 $15.3 billion 1986 $14.8 billion 1987 $16.3 billion (Data source: B.M.R) The mining industry supplies about 40% of Australia's export earnings. However the overall value of Geoscience to the Australian economy is much greater. At the opening of the ANZAAS conference in Townsville during May 1987, Sir Bruce Watson , Chairman of the Mt. Isa Mines Ltd., made a plea for a national re-examination of the way science is taught in secondary schools. In particular he emphasized the point that the community should be more aware of the importance of Geoscience and the value of the mining industry to Australia.

In a previous paper of this series (1) ,t it was shown that during the creep of single crystals of lead, deformation proceeded to some extent by means of slip on the octahedral plane. This was demonstrated by the formation of slip lines on the surface of the specimens. At first, a few broad bands appeared after a small amount of extension had taken place; then, as extension proceeded, more and finer lines made their appearance until the whole of the specimen surface was covered.The present paper deals with the process of deformation of the creep specimens as revealed by X-ray examination..By the use of this method, the changes taking place in the crystal structure can be observed.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe method of preparation of the specimens, their size and the purity of the lead employed have been reported elsewhere (1). At frequent intervals, the specimens were dismantled from the test rack and X-ray back reflection photographs were taken. The specimens were so marked and set up on the X-ray machine that the same spot on the specimen surface was always examined.Copper radiation was employed, the tube voltage and current being 45 kV. and 25 m.a. respectively and the exposure time 2 hrs. The slit diameter was 1 mm.

Steelmaking has a significant contribution in producing greenhouse gases and there is a worldwide push towards decarbonising the process. One of the approaches to reduce CO2 emissions is to use hydrogen in the blast furnace (BF) as the reductant gas. However, hydrogen reduction is an endothermic reaction, bringing changes to the temperature distribution in the BF. Understanding iron ore sinter mineralogy and reducibility under a hydrogen atmosphere is essential to optimise the process. In this study, sinter analogues in the Fe3O4-CaO-SiO2 (FCS) ternary system together with industrial sinters were reduced in H2-rich and CO atmospheres and the resulting reducibility and associated mineralogical changes were observed. Results show that magnetite-lime-silica (MLS) sinter analogues had similar reduction rates under H2 and CO, and also higher reducibility than most of the industrial sinters, suggesting that magnetite sinters could be used efficiently in a conventional or hydrogen blast furnace.

In the Archaean of the Kalgoorlie-Norseman area, the layered rocks have been subdivided into two sequences, both containing basic igneous rocks and sediments. The lower sequence is distinguished by the presence of acid volcanic flows and large acid sills. The upper sequence is unconformable on the lower one.In some areas, clastic sediments become coarser and pass into conglomerates. Th:s passage is accompanied by thinning of the beds.These features and their distribution suggest a basin of subsidence flanked by areas of shore-line conditions.Repeated igneous activity, including vulcanism, has occurred along the flanks of this basin. These different igneous and sedimentary environments have played an important part in the primary distribution of metals.A chronology of all basic and acid igneous activity, as well as sedimentat:on, has been established for the Precambrian of this area.INTRODUCTIONThe subdivision of Archaean rocks into those of basic igneous or of sedimentary origin has formed the basis for the nomenclature appearing in past literature. These subdivisions were distinguished as greenstones (predominantly basic igneous rocks) and whitestones (predominantly sediments), and it was generally accepted that the greenstones were stratigraphically lower in the sequence than the whitestones.Recent studies show that, between Kalgoorlie and Norseman, basic igneous rocks interfinger with and pass laterally to sediments, and that basic volcanic rocks occur at different stratigraphic levels. On-stream determination of xanthate concentrations can be made by photometric measurements at 313 nm.A simple double-beam instrument was developed for this purpose. A mercury lamp is used as the light source and a composite filter of UGll glass and chromate solution is used to isolate the required spectral region. The light beam is split into two components of approximately equal intensity. One component is passed through a reference cell containing water to a photo detector; the other component is passed through the xanthate solution to a second photo detector. The reference signal controls amplifier gain to eliminate effects of lamp intensity changes and the amplified sample signal can then be used to measure xanthate concentration.Plant trials showed that provided a clear solution free of air bubbles was obtained from an on-stream filter, the instrument indicated the xanthate concentration and operated satisfactorily for long periods.

Segregation roasting was used to recover more than 85 per cent of copper from crushed, minus 14 mesh refractory furnace-lining bricks. A plus 14 mesh fraction: which was high in copper, could be recycled directly to the smelter, giving an overall recovery of approximately 90 per cent. An oxidation roast at about 700°C was necessary, before segregation roasting, to convert copper sulphides and copper metal to sulphates and oxides. Withsegregatron temperatures in the range 600°-650°C the quantities of solid carbon and NaCI required are 2-5 per cent and 1 per cent respectively. P.V.C. coating from scrap copper wire can be used instead of NaCl as asource of hydrogen chloride for the segregation reaction.

UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract.
