A sampling and measurement program was undertaken on the reaction shaft of the Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. The object of the work was to provide information to validate a mathematical model of the burner and reaction shaft. Samples and measurements were undertaken through the burner inspection ports and the South East (SE) shaft sampling port about half way down the reaction shaft. Samples were collected to enable the calculation of particle loading of shaft gases, or sizing and chemical analysis of the partly-combusted feed, and the preparation of polished sections. Measurements were made of the temperature and sulfur dioxide content of the atmosphere, as well as plume velocity.To implement the program it was necessary to design and construct the following specialised items of equipment. For use at the burner inspection ports: a cup sampler for obtaining samples below the burners (temperature, solids loading and samples for characterisation).For use at the SE shaft sampling port and also at the settler level: trough sampler (plume definition and samples), isokinetic sampler (used as a velocity probe in this work), temperature probe (temperature traverses across the shaft), and sulfur dioxide probe (SO2 measurements across the shaft).The design of the sampling and measuring equipment is described, and examples are cited of the types of information obtained. The problems arising from working in a hot environment with molten or sticky particles are discussed.

The emerging coal seam gas (CSG) industry has the potential to provide a large-scale energy province for Queensland. Aquifer impacts and management of associated by-product water, both in terms of quantity and quality, are pivotal considerations for the development of a sustainable CSG industry.Legislative changes have been introduced to ensure that the CSG industry manages potential groundwater impacts and beneficial reuse of the by-product water to a level acceptable to both government and the community.The relevant new pieces of legislation covering petroleum and coal seam gas activities include the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 (P&G Act), Petroleum and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2004 (POLA Act), the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Regulation 2004 and the Petroleum Regulation 2004. Other relevant legislation includes the Petroleum Act 1923 (Petroleum Act) and Part 7AA of the Mineral Resources Act 1989 (Coal Seam Gas Regime). The P&G Act introduces a full regime for managing water rights. This includes provisions for monitoring and reporting on the effects that the taking of underground water under petroleum tenure has on other bores in the area. The P&G Act also imposes a æmake good obligationÆ on petroleum tenure holders, which requires the restoration of bores affected by the taking of water or the payment of compensation. These provisions represent a significant departure from the Petroleum Act, which says very little about water rights and does not specify restrictions on the taking of water under petroleum tenure. This paper attempts to outline the requirements and obligations of the P&G Act for the CSG industry in terms of underground water rights, development impact assessments, aquifer trigger thresholds, monitoring and reporting requirements, as well as the make good obligations.

The difficulty in fine particle flotation has been attributed, among other things, to a low bubble-particle collision efficiency. Many technologies have been developed which aim at increasing bubble-particle collision efficiency, either by generating micro bubbles or by enlarging particle sizes. However, commercial applications of these technologies are limited. Over the last five years COREM has been actively testing fine particle froth flotation technologies with the objective of commercialisation. Several fine particle flotation technologies, such as dissolved air flotation, electro-flotation, floc flotation, selective flocculation-flotation and carrier flotation, were tested on both single minerals and ore samples in order to identify the reasons that prevented these technologies from being used on a commercial scale. It was found that the two most noticeable factors that prevented the successful application of these technologies were: Mechanical entrainment of fine gangue minerals. This was a general problem in fine particle flotation, but was aggravated by these technologies that either generated micro bubbles or enlarged the sizes of hydrophobic particles. Oxidation of (sulfide) minerals that resulted in hydrophilic oxidation product coatings. The oxidised fine particles could not be recovered by these fine particle flotation technologies effectively. Solutions to the two problems, ie gangue entrainment and fine particle oxidation, were proposed and tested. It seems that polymeric depressants with both depression and flocculation functions could significantly reduce gangue entrainment, and hydrophilic surfaces of oxidised fine particles could be modified by high intensity conditioning or controlled sulfidisation, thus increasing the recoveries of fine valuable minerals. The improved fine valuable particle flotation and reduced fine gangue entrainment along with fine particle flotation technologies resulted in much improved flotation separation of fine particles.

Government established and financed the NZ Steel Investigating Co in 1960. Its investigations showed that a steel industry was feasible and desirable based uponNorth Island titanomagnetite ironsands, and charted a route for its establishment. The initial processing used post-1945 preheating and prereduction developments, but later innovative improvements created what was essentially a new New Zealand technology. Of the North Island titanomagnetite deposits: the small ones at Waipipi were best made available for export; those at Kawhia and Taharoa were too remote for the economic siting of a mill; that at Raglan proved too small; while at Waikato North Head three times the requirement of 50 million tons of concentrate were located in two sand areas averaging 18 per cent titanomagnetite. Economic studies showed that a South Auckland site would be ideal, close to New Zealand's biggest market. The mill site, on a basalt flow at Glenbrook, was located by a half-day's fieldwork - near both the Waikato North Head deposit, and a railhead for bringing in Waikato coal, etc, and taking out steel products.   This development was one of several since World War II which altered significantly the lives and homes of New Zealanders (others were natural gas, oil, geothermal power, epithermal gold, aluminium, opencastable lignite, etc). All had the essential ingredients of the highest government backing, direct or indirect government finance, and first-class New Zealand scientific and engineering skills (eg to create new technologies). Not one such project failed.

The Australian Constitution specifies certain powers of the Commonwealth Government to be used in its capacity as the national government. Certain of these broad powers result in the Com- monwealth having a facility to play an important part in the development of the mining industry. The State Governments, however, by virtue of their wide powers to regulate matters within the boundaries of a particular State, are more directly involved in the day to day administration and standards of activities of mining operations. In this respect the Common- wealth has something of a dual role because of its "State-like" responsibilities for the mainland Terri- tories. The components of the role that the Common- wealth Government discharges in relation to the mining industry are qualified to varying extents at particular times by the political persuasion of the Government. In absolute terms the components are as follows. 1. Economic management. The Commonwealth's fiscal and monetary policies have an important effect on industry as well as on State finances. In particular, the taxation regime employed by the Commonwealth Government is of direct importance to economic decision-makers in the mining industry. 2. International matters. International trade and commodity matters are, more and more, becoming an everyday part of the conduct of a nation's foreign affairs. 3. Exports. The Commonwealth Government, via the constitutional powers over overseas trade, have exercised varying degrees of control over mineral exports to achieve particular objectives. 4. Foreign capital and investment. Australia in general, and the mining industry in particular, is and will continue to be a net importer of capital. There appears to be bipartisan political agreement in Australia that foreign investment policy must be enunciated to ensure that investors. are in no doubt that Australia welcomes beneficial investment and technology from overseas. 5. Environment and Aborigines. Governments, both Commonwealth and State, have in recent years become more involved in these areas in response to their interpretations of community aspirations. 6. Energy. Access to assured supplies of energy is now viewed, by Governments worldwide, as a desirable asset to ensure the well-being of a nation's people and industries.

The township of Yalloum was established in 1921 to provide accommodation for the work force on the sites of the power station and open cut which were to become the basis of Victoria's electricity industry.A company town, Yallourn flourished, and in its heyday in the 1950s the township had a population in excess of 5500 residents.However the town was sited over a valuable coal field. In the 1960s, studies conducted by the State Electricity Commission indicated that excavation of this coal as a continuing development of Yalloum Open Cut was the optimum choice to meet the growing energy needs of Victoria. Operation in what became known as the Township Field commenced in 1979 and the completion of the overburden stripping was successfully achieved on target in 1991.

The application of discreet event simulation has matured in modelling manufacturing systems for production analysis. This simulation tool was used in studying a number of mining operations, especially material handling processes. The study of truck-shovel operation including equipment matching, selection, and production estimation utilised the discrete event simulation for providing valuable decision-making information. The sophistication of the available simulation tools grew over times, and simulation driven animation was used to facilitate the validation and visualisation of the simulated system. This form of visualisation enhanced the simulation use greatly. First of all, it provided a communication medium to transfer information to the non-technical managerial personnel as a better decision-making tool. Moreover, the animated visualisation provided a validation tool to check the working of the simulated system and interaction among its components.

Furthermore, the coke combustion propert- ies are not always taken into account in current blast furnace operating practice with combined blast. A complex dimensionless parameter, which re- flects the properties of the interacting media, is the ratio of the kinetic energy of the hot, com- bined gas stream to the potential energy of the coke flow, burning at the tuyere in a gas of known composition. Mark Westfield, writing in The Australian on 16 May 1994 stated: The role of the independent expert is crucial to Australia's investment system. When it falls down, there can be very dramatic consequences. The scope of these consequences was dramatically illustrated in the decision of Rogers J. at first instance in Cambridge Credit Corporation v. Hutcheson (1983) 8 ACLR 123 when the auditors of the failed company were found liable for breach of contract and faced a damages award of $145 million, well in excess of their insurance cover. No comfort should be sought in the fact that this decision was overturned on appeal, for the result of the appeal rested on whether there had been a causal connection between the breach of contract which had occurred and the loss suffered, rather than on the fundamental principle of auditors' liability. Thus: Those who prepare experts' reports in company cases carry a heavy moral responsibility, whatever their legal duties may be... Unless high standards are observed by those who prepare these reports, there is a danger that systems established for the protection of the investing public will, in fact, operate to their detriment through reliance placed on those reports and on the reputations of those who furnish them. The kinetics of reduction of PbO-silicate melts in CO-N gas mixtures at 900¦C have been studied. Rea~tion rates were measured by moni- toring the CO2 content of the product gas. A wide range of gas and melt compositions and gas flowrates have been investigated. The overall reaction rates in heterogen- eous systems are typically characterised by a steady increase as the gas flowrate is in- creased. At low flowrates the processes are limited by gas film mass transfer. At high flowrates it is expected that the rates will tend to maximum values determined by either the rate limiting chemical reaction or diffusion in the condensed phase. In the present series of experiments it has been found that for any given gas composition the overall reduction rate goes through a maximum with increasing gas flow. The maxima, which occur at relatively low gas flows, are more than an order of magni- tude greater than those observed at high gas flowrates. The results of these and other experiments are presented and analysed. Possible rate limiting mechanisms in the reaction system and their implications regarding commercial reactors are discussed.

Blasting is at first sight a simple operation. Blastholes are drilled in a suitable pattern, primed, charged with explosives, stemmed and finally the blastholes are connected together to give the appro- priate initiation sequence. In practice the action of the explosive takes place in the interior of an opaque rock mass and only the external faces of the rock mass to be blasted can be easily observed. The mechanisms of blasting cannot be observed directly and must be inferred from observations of the free face and meas- urements of particle movement made by sensors grouted into holes in the rock. Explosives react very rapidly, in some microse- conds and any instrumentation of a blast must have an appro- priate response time. In many mines several rock types can be encountered during production. Several different methods of blasting may be necessary to cope with changes in rock types espe- cially if weak rocks are found in the final limits. This also makes it difficult to be sure of getting a large enough volume of rock to perform a series of reproducible experiments. While there appears to be agreement on the mechanism of blasting it is unlikely that a detailed understanding of how all the variables that can be encountered in practice affect blasting. The ease of assessment of the results of blasting depends on the criteria used. It is easy to isolate, measure and count over- size boulders. It is however difficult and costly to get a complete fragment size distribution. Methods used to assess blasting can vary significantly from site to site and the ways in which data are collected, presented and analysed will vary making compari- son of blasts at several locations very difficult. The definition of an optimum blast can also vary with the type of blasting. The muck-pile profile and fragmentation will be different for a dragline to that for a truck and shovel operation. In order to be able to assess blasting the mechanism has to be understood. Th rock and explosive properties considered rele- vant to blasting can then be determined. There is a vast amount of geotechnical data, which can be obtained during exploration programs at new and existing mine sites. Additional information on the performance of the in-situ rock mass can be obtained from bore cores, which are usually only geologically logged and then stored. A computer based data management system for storage and retrieval of geotechnical data has been developed to access and manipulate such data.

In the past many coal mining projects commenced without any consideration being given to eventual site rehabilitation. Now that site rehabilitation is assuming greater importance with changing community expectations, and standards are becoming less negotiable, it cannot be ignored in either the development of mine working plans or economic models. The "unspecified" rehabilitation measures associated with many existing projects will be the subject of debate for some time to come yet. It would be wise to plan for the future. Once an agreeed standard of rehabilitation is accepted, good management involves considering practices which will facilitate eventual rehabilitation at least cost. Without planning for rehabilitation, many mines have adopted practices which are likely to result in very expensive rehabilitation measures and impact significantly on the overall profitability of the ventures. With adequate planning, procedures can be developed which achieve the same short term goals without significantly effecting cash flow but with very significant impacts on the final rehabilitation cost. This paper looks at the disposal of tailings and overburden in the coal mining process. The industry has in the past had an obvious preference for the "perceived" cheaper procedures for waste management such as wet disposal of tailings and high dumping of overburden. There are alternatives. The paper discusses the principles which should be incorporated into tailings and overburden disposal systems and identifies viable alternatives.

The Rivera Crystalline Island (RCI) is an erosional window of the intracontinental Parana Basin that outcrops in the Rivera Department, north of Uruguay. RCI is made up mainly by Precambrian granites, metasediments and granite-gneisses. This island is crosscut by a dextral transcurrent shear zone system, the Rivera Shear System (RSS). The bulk strain ellipsoid was defined by previous work and has allowed the evaluation of shear dynamics. The geometry of the shear system is made up of two shear directions: E-W (P-shear), which turn right to NW-SE direction (R-shear), leading to the development of extensional bends. The shear zone system was developed in brittle-ductile to brittle regimes, under temperature conditions compatible with greenschist facies metamorphism. The shear zones are marked by an intensive fracture cleavage development. Mylonites develop only in narrow, discontinuous higher strain zones. Internally, the shear zones are dominated by intrusive rocks, mainly granites, dacites and diorites. Hydrothermal alteration has been developed in several areas.The economic significance of RCI is given by several small gold deposits, which have been exploited since 1869. One major new gold mine is under development, the San Gregorio Gold Mine. This gold deposit is locally controlled by a dilatant site where R-shear turns right to P-shear. Mine lithologies were deeply altered by hydrothermal fluids in the dilatant structure. This work presents the lineament-structural analysis carried out to identify similar structural patterns in all RCI sites favourable to host other gold deposits. The exploration program also considered remote sensing, geology, geophysical and geochemical survey.

In recent years substantial advances have been made in the field of geomechanics. Staff at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) are keen to see that such advances continue and that the mining industry in Australia can take full advantage of such developments in a timely manner. WASM views mining geomechanics in its broadest sense, as being concerned with the characterisation of the physical properties and the behaviour of earth materials (soil, rock and water) and openings as mining proceeds. Aspects such as, soil and rock improvement techniques for difficult site conditions and the rock breaking processes, are also considered to be an integral part of mining geomechanics. This paper indicates the inter-relationships between the various areas within the field of geomechanics and the strong reliance of all of these areas on site specific engineering geology.

One of the key aspects to develop sustainable metallurgical production is to ensure that the predictive power of thermodynamic tools is brought up to a new level of accuracy and reliability. Exploring new polymetallic processes, integrating primary and recycled materials, means utilising the uncharted areas within the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Al-Mg-Si-O (major) – Cr-Na (slagging) – As-Sn-Sb- Bi-Ag-Au-Ni-Co (minor) slag-solids-metal-matte-speiss-sulfate system. This requires extensive integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study, which is underway at PyroSearch at the University of Queensland (UQ).

This paper is concerned with two case histories of wastewater quality management in underground coal mines in the Illawarra region. The first investigation briefly presents an analysis of mine water discharge having an extremely high concentration of suspended solids and consistently high barium concentrations, averaging, 14.4 mg/I Barium, over the sampling period. A laboratory study of chemical precipitation processes has indicated that about 91% of barium could be removed by using ferric sulphate and lime. On the basis of the information obtained from the environmental audit process an alternative water treatment and reuse system incorporating 51% reduction in the water consumption with 32% less off-site discharge has been suggested (Thomas, 1995).The second case history is concerned with the storm water management at a mine situated in the Illawarra escarpment where only 20% of the wastewater generated in the colliery is discharged off-site. Computer modelling of the storm water system showed that 75% of the clean runoff becomes contaminated through poor management practices and causes the process wastewater treatment system to fail in wet weather. Suggested improvements include relatively simple alteration to the coal wash filtration dams which are expected to reduce the periods of inefficient operation of these dams by 95%. The use of storm water diversion channels and detention basins can reduce the overflow volumes by 70 - 100 % for a ten year ARI (Average Recurrence Interval) storm event (Wingrove 1996).

In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

This investigation involves laboratory testing and stability analysis of paste fill at the Golden Giant Mine. Site-cast samples are tested in unconfined, confined, and consolidated-undrained triaxial compression. Pore pressures during shear and consolidation characteristics are measured to determine both drained and undrained shear strength parameters and assess the potential for undrained loading. Liquefaction potential is also considered. A limit equilibrium solution is used to obtain factors of safety against failure of the fill during mining of adjacent stopes.
