Quarrying in Australia accounts for a total annual production of around 200 Mt/a of sand, aggregate and materials used in construction. This material has an annual value of the order of $2 billion and, combined with transport costs of a further $1 billion, the annual value of quarry products are in excess of $3 billion. Currently all of the production of construction materials in Australia is from open cut quarrying or dredging. This paper focuses on the extraction of material by underground mining methods, termed æunderground quarryingÆ. The paper considers a case study for future underground development expansion of the existing open cut Mt Coot-tha quarry, located 5 km from the centre of Brisbane, Queensland.

The Silver Swan nickel mine is located at the Black Swan Nickel Project, 53 km north east of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The Silver Swan orebody is a massive sulphide nickel deposit dipping 70¦ east with an average in situ grade of 14 per cent. Mining of the massive orebody is by Mechanised Ramp Cut and Fill (MRCF). A mining recovery of 98 per cent and minimising dilution are primary goals in extracting the high-grade ore. Placing a distinguishable marker bed (working platform) on rock fill was identified as a key method to achieving these goals. Gravel from a pit located onsite was considered the most suitable material for the marker beds. Research undertaken to design the marker beds using the gravel revealed conventional methods used in mining would not suffice, but that road stabilisation methods could be a viable alternative. Trials used a road recycler to mix cement and gravel in situ and several test beds were constructed on the surface to determine the final design. The trials attempted to replicate a marker bedÆs life cycle of construction and placement and mucking of ore from the marker bed. Testing the marker bed for strength for use as a working platform was completed using a Clegg Hammer; good correlation to a Clegg Impact Value and the compressive strength of the stabilised gravel was found. This paper describes the use of a road stabilisation machine, tests conducted, monitoring and marker bed design and discusses underground placement of the marker bed and its performance.

This paper examines six sites in Northern Nevada where soils and groundwater have been contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and/or organochlorine compounds. All six of the sites studied are located in an arid, highly mineralised area of the Great Basin. As a part of the original geochemical investigation to determine the applicability of biodegradation in the remediation of petroleum impacted soils and aquifers extremely high levels of uranium, vanadium and molybdenum were detected in the anaerobic groundwaters associated with some of the hydrocarbon plumes. Some groundwater uranium concentrations exceeded 7 ppm while vanadium and molybdenum concentrations reached almost one ppm. The bioleaching appeared to be most effective under methanogenic conditions and was noted in both high sulfide and low sulfide environments. Background concentrations of uranium in the formation were measured between 6 ppm and 109 ppm and highly dependent upon depth with the highest levels being found in association with evaporites. Unlike uranium, vanadium tended to concentrate in free-floating organic fractions reaching levels as high as 2000 ppm in the layers of jet fuel floating above the groundwater. Molybdenum was the most resistant of the three metals to bioleaching.

The wear mechanisms of impregnated diamond drill bit matrices are complex and believed to be the key point in solving drill bit self-sharpening problems. A method has been developed to find the change in c,, the wear rate of matrices having different fracture toughness K_ at the increment of drill pressure P. The worn surfaces of specimens were placed under a scanning electron microscope to examine the wear patterns and wear mechanisms at different pressures, and were compared with the worn surface of a practical drill bit. A model is proposed that within a wide range of pressures there exist two different wear mechanisms and three wear regions for cemented car- bide matrix materials. In region one (linear region), at low pressure, the major wear mechanism is plastic deformation in which the preferential wear of the binder phase of the matrix results in the loss of WC, tung- sten carbide particles. Wear rate is controlled by hardness, H as Archard's formula predicts. Wear enters region two and three (non-linear region) simultaneously as pressure is being increased. Consequently, wear transfers to fracture mechanism in which micro-fracture occurs at the root of wear grooves and the material is removed mainly in piece and mass. It has been shown fracture toughness K,, plays a more important role than hard- ness H. It is concluded that for a specific drilling condition, the pressure on the matrix should be carefully controlled and a balance between hard- ness and toughness of the material is essential for a steady drilling Condition.

The George Fisher deposit is a significant sediment hosted silver-leadzinc resource located 2 km north of the Hilton Mine in NW Queensland. The George Fisher feasibility project involved the completion of underground and surface drilling programs to delineate Measured and Indicated Resource which could be converted to an Ore Reserve through mining and commercial studies. The geological information which was collected and used for the feasibility study included a major program of diamond drilling, predominantly from underground sites, but with some drilling also completed from surface. All drillcore was geologically and geotechnically logged, sampled and assayed. Data was also collected from underground cross-cut and drive development which was mapped for rocktype, ore distribution, structure and geotechnical condition. This new geological data, generated during the Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility stages, was combined with results of all previous drilling campaigns in the George Fisher area to produce a comprehensive database on which geological modelling and Resource estimation could be based. To allow fast and accurate collection and utilisation of data from the drilling program, digital collection processes were used where possible. This resulted in rapid data entry into the project database, significantly enhanced data quality, 100 per cent data ownership within the project team and increased productivity levels. Processes used during the project data collection program are described, lessons learned are related and suggestions for ænext timeÆ are listed using the benefit of hindsight.

This paper examines some of the important aspects of mineral taxation policies and practices, with reference to the mining tax regimes of selected Pacific Rim countries (see Tables 1 and 2). The following subjects are addressed:what is æmineral taxationÆ?, basis for mineral taxation, types of mineral taxes, objectives of the mineral taxation regime, best practices, and mineral royalties. Many countries, in some cases with the encouragement and assistance of international funding agencies, are actively assessing the international competitiveness of their mining tax regimes with a view to attracting investment. However, these countries recognise that the mining tax regime is not the only consideration that is taken into account by prospective investors. The countryÆs geological prospectivity, physical infrastructure, labour force, political risk, and regulatory system are also important factors in the investment decision making process. Although it is probably true that an attractive mining tax regime will not necessarily attract mineral investment, there is a real possibility that an unattractive regime can drive away investment. For example, Hugo Dummett, general manager for discovery at BHP, hinted recently that BHP could cease exploration in Russia in the absence of positive tax changes. Dummett is reported as saying that if taxes æend up being as onerous as they are now, we really have to rethink why we are hereÆ (Mining Journal, London, November 27, 1998).

Tracking plant and personnel in mining operations provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including improved safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control and, in the future, monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques currently proposed and used for wireless tracking are radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID provide poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines and does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, however, most current equipment has not realised the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the Wireless Ad hoc System for Positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines and surface operations, where GPS reception is compromised by depth. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at fixed and known locations within the mine and tags attached to the plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus, wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging down to 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of testing in underground and surface operations showing the system achieving high ranging, hence localisation, accuracy.

Soft sensors offer several practical advantages for the process control of comminution circuits by combining multiple conventional sensors and other data sources with real-time analysis using mechanistic, phenomenological or machine learning models. While there has been a growth in the use of machine learning techniques for developing soft sensors in minerals processing applications, this paper describes advantages and challenges of using soft sensor models developed on the basis of process knowledge. Recent experience with three new soft sensor technologies developed by the authors are discussed. The Mill Filling Inference Tool which has been implemented at several mine sites, compares SAG mill load cell and power draw measurements with outputs of a semi-mechanistic power model to estimate the mill ball and total filling in real time. The progressive wear of the mill liners is modelled, allowing the model to correct the load mass due to the mass loss automatically and to estimate the charge trajectory. This information enables the mill to be operated more confidently near its limits. A coarse-ore stockpile soft sensor as been recently developed using a 3D cellular automata-based model to track ore size throughout the pile, and estimating the live capacity and size at each stockpile feeder to the primary mills. Finally, a hydrocyclone soft sensor is being developed to monitor performance using available hydrocyclone models to estimate the size and flow balance around the cyclone in real time. The model-based soft-sensor approach aims to synthesise and analyse existing data and provide operators and engineers with process- and model-relevant information that can facilitate making better process decisions. Maintenance data has proven useful for model development as it allows soft sensors to automatically adjust and compensate for the effect of progressive wear, for example for mill liners, thus helping the models to maintain calibration throughout the equipment life.

In July 1986, Cable Sands (W.A.) Pty Ltd commenced mining for mineral sands at Minninup, approximately 16 km south of Bunbury, Western Australia.The area being mined is from the heel of the foredune to the rear of the hind-dune. The vegetation is mostly native vegetation with some old degraded pasture.The mining operation will be by suction cutter dredge, with continuous dredging, mineral separation and re-depositing of the sand.

AMC has completed a number of backfill options studies, including several in recent years for large, three-dimensional orebodies involving total extraction by longhole open stoping with backfill. This has led to the development of a thorough review methodology that assists in the selection of the most appropriate backfill system and the most economic mixes to achieve the required performance. A recently developed design tool has simplified the calculation of backfill strengths for various exposure dimensions and automatically determines strengths incrementally over the height of a stope. Using a generic orebody with a plan dimension of 120 m wide by 360 m long, several different stoping layouts have been analysed to determine the effect of stope dimensions and sequencing on backfill strength requirements. This has been done for stope heights from 50 m to 300 m, in 50 m increments. The required strengths have been calculated in slices and summarised for each stope in four equal layers. The average strength requirement for each layout at each stope height has been compared graphically. For all stope heights, a panel stope layout that minimises the proportion of primary stopes results in a lower average strength requirement than grid layouts on a checkerboard pattern. However, for very high stopes, smaller plan dimensions become more economic. The increase in required strength with stope height is non-linear, making taller stopes potentially more attractive. The main cost factor in most backfills is the rate of binder addition, which is closely related to the strength required. By choosing a layout that minimises the backfill strength requirement, significant savings in binder addition rates and overall costs can be achieved. These must, of course, be weighed against other factors to determine the optimum stoping layout and backfill system.

Using the cellular automata computational technique it was possible to simulate the generation and discharge of an iron ore pellet pile inside a direct iron reduction oven, as well as to calculate the reduction degree of the pellets as they leave the oven. It allows simulation of the variation of operational parameters and verify the results of those variations in the pellet reduction degree. The simulated data was validated in two instances: for the dynamics of the pellet flow inside the oven it was used in an acrylic bi-dimensional silo; and data from direct reduction iron literature was used for validation of the pellet reduction. The simulated results were considered acceptable to describe the movement of the iron pellet inside the direct reduction iron oven and to describe the iron pellet reduction direct in the oven.

The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan includes mining of the:unmineralised banded iron formation (BIF), Mt Whaleback Shale, Mt McRae Shale, Mt Sylvia Formation, and parts of the Wittenoom and Jeerinah Formation. With the exception of BIFs, all other units contain zones with varying amounts of sulphides and carbon û æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has a propensity to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulphide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Mining reactive shale at the Mt Whaleback mine must be undertaken in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Key tasks in the mining process include:100 per cent identification of blastholes that may contain reactive shale; 100 per cent correct loading of blastholes with specified blasting products; 100 per cent of reactive shale mined, hauled and dumped in designated overburden storage areas; 100 per cent containment and treatment of ARD water onsite; and ongoing research into ARD, self-heating and spontaneous combustion. Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments.

Lihir Gold Mine is situated in a dormant volcanic caldera on a small island off PNG. Not æextinctÆ but dormant. Current ground temperatures are up to 150 degrees Celsius with active geysers in the workings of the mine, pools of boiling ground water adjacent to low-grade dumps and hydrogen sulphide gas emissions. It is a unique mining environment by world standards. This paper will deal with the following issues encountered and managed by the operation:blasting in hot and reactive ground; management of sulphide gas emissions; disposal at sea of all mining waste rock; one dear to all Australian minerÆs hearts û dealing with landowner groups; and unusual human resource issues.

A new portal and access drift was constructed by Concrete Constructions for BHPÆs Elouera Colliery, south of Wollongong.The portal area at the base of the Illawarra Escarpment is in soft colluvium material, underlain by highly to moderately weathered sandstone. The area has a well documented history of slope movement or slope creep and one of the main criteria for the design was to minimise disturbance to the unstable slope by limiting the excavation for the portal establishment. This was achieved by incorporating a sloped headwall and gabion wingwalls to accommodate the anticipated creep and groundwater seepage.Main features of the design process also included the provision of both primary and secondary support in a single shell application and the use of canopy tubes to provide support ahead of the tunnel face.The active involvement of the designer during the construction phase and the flexibility of the design concept allowed changes to the support methodology to be carried out as excavation proceeded.This paper describes the design process undertaken for portal establishment and access drift to cater for the variability of the exposed ground conditions along the drift alignment.

Tailings are generally deposited on or near to the mine sites, occupying the site area, and being an economic burden for mining companies. Tailings can cause several environmental impacts, such as leaking toxic substances and contaminating underground water, emitting greenhouse gases, and damaging natural bodies and wildlife. Geopolymerisation of mine waste effectively transforms mine waste into more valuable, environmentally friendly products. Geopolymers are inorganic aluminosilicate materials that are widely applied in the construction industry (Araya, Kraslawski and Cisternas, 2020). The high performance and the low-CO2 emission of geopolymers make this type of material potentially more desirable than ordinary cement, given that manufacturing one ton of traditional cement generates approximately 0.8 tons of CO2. This process is seen as a promising method for repurposing tailings and reducing the environmental impact of mining waste. However, the environmental impact of geopolymer production is not sufficiently comprehended (Mazzinghy et al, 2022). Moreover, geopolymerisation of mine waste can offer several economic benefits, including reduced waste management costs (Amari et al, 2019; He et al, 2022), reduced raw material costs, and potentially lower production costs. However, there are several challenges that need to be addressed to ensure the economic feasibility of the process. This study aims to demonstrate the potential environmental impacts of geopolymer concrete produced using mine wastes and industrial by-products such as blast furnace slag (BFS). For this, a comparative cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was conducted on different geopolymer mix designs, and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions results were compared to the ordinary cement. LCA can be used to evaluate the environmental impact of geopolymerisation of mine wastes in various ways. One important impact category is GHG gas emissions, which contribute to climate change and is the focus of this study. Another aim of this study is to evaluate the economic feasibility of the geopolymerisation of mine wastes via economic analysis (EA) to identify the key economic factors and trade-offs associated with repurposing mine wastes through geopolymerisation.

Mining cycles have come and gone and with them there have been dramatic swings in the levels of interest and student entry into minerals-related education programs, hence graduate supply to the industry. So what is the problem? These trends will keep happening and the industry will keep on keeping on – or will it?This paper discusses recent trends in Australian minerals education programs and some international examples, together with some of the more recent initiatives taken by both the minerals education sector and the industry, such as the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) and MEA. The real problem is that things will not just keep going the way they have over recent decades – there will come a time when there is no longer a supply of minerals academics available to provide the educational programs; and universities will simply shut down subcritical mass mining programs and invest in the much more lucrative programs such as commerce, law, medicine, etc. By the time this starts to happen it will be at least ten years too late for any last-minute reactive response by industry, if they were to try and avert such a consequence. International experience with mining programs bears out this scenario quite clearly.It is therefore timely for industry individual mines and mine management to take a much more strategic look at their role in the education sector. Sustainable mining also means sustainable minerals education – without one, the other will not function over the long-term. There is a pressing need for long-term strategic buy-in by industry into the education sector – not just for the good times, but also through the tough times. This means much more than a scholarship here or there, but includes such commitments as major industry-university research partnerships; collaborative recruitment initiatives and much more. The paper will discuss a range of such issues, problems and opportunities to address these important issues through strategic, comprehensive, long-term commitments by industry and equally significant and appropriate responses by the education sector. Mt Todd lies towards the south end of the Pine Creek Geosyncline, sandwiched between the Cullen Batholith and the Edith Falls Basin, in an area of regionally metamorphosed sandstones, siltstones and shales. The Batman deposit, some 3 km west of Mt Todd is a sheeted quartz vein system hosted within greywackes of the Palaeoproterozoic Burrell Creek Formation (Finniss River Group). The gold-bearing quartz veins, trending 010¦-020¦ and dipping 60¦-70¦E, are commonly 0.5 to 5 cm wide and occur at intervals which are from 10 cm to 1 m apart. Gold tends to be restricted to the quartz veinlets and immediately adjacent country rock. Grade Control utilises two 4 m 'collar' samples which are collected from each 8 m production blasthole. The irregular distribution of the quartz veins and erratic gold mineralisation has resulted in a disseminated 'salt and pepper' type of gold occurrence, with only a poorly defined footwall. Delineation of ore and waste blocks for mining uses an approach which combines the smoothing effect of kriging with a pragmatic view of the raw data. Large ore blocks with simple geometry help to minimise mining dilution, reduce block variance and give good reconciliations to interpreted ore tonnes and grade. Daily mine face advance is reported against truck counts and provides continual comparison with budgeted production. All data processing uses Gemcom software, together with Lotus spreadsheets.

Ti-added ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel is produced by adding Al and Ti during the secondary refining process to deoxidise molten steel and to bind C and N which are detrimental to the deep drawing quality of the steel product. However, the production of Ti-added ULC steel faces challenges, including submerged entry nozzle clogging and surface defects on cold rolled coils. The troubles were often attributed to ‘Al-Ti complex inclusions’ in the molten steel. However, the evolution of oxide inclusions including their stability has been still unclear. In the present study, the evolution of these inclusions in Ti-added ULC steel was investigated by phase diagram measurement, CALPHAD thermodynamic modelling, high-temperature stability test for the oxides, and observation of transient behaviour of oxide inclusions in the steel. The phase diagram of the Al-Ti-O system was elucidated with an emphasis on oxygen potential, which significantly controls the stability of the oxides. CALPHAD thermodynamic models and a self-consistent database were developed. The transient behaviour of Al-Ti complex inclusions in Ti-added ULC steel was observed in situ using a confocal scanning laser microscope. This was additionally validated by the new thermodynamic model. The equilibrium phases of the oxide inclusions were investigated using a high-temperature resistance furnace, and were analysed using a secondary electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer, and electron back-scattered diffraction. By considering the morphology and crystal structure of these inclusions, the evolution of Al-Ti oxide inclusions was elucidated. Various behaviour of Al-Ti inclusions and their influence on steel cleanliness are discussed.

The application of high technology to monitor and control fire life safety, critical functionality in tunnels and underground spaces generally has progressed at an ever accelerating rate over the past decade. Today these systems comprise some of the most complex and little understood aspects of the tunnel/underground facility construction industry, with this area being perceived as high risk comprising impenetrably complex ‘black box’ technology covered in blinking LEDs. This paper will seek to explode some urban myths and common misconceptions associated with such systems, providing its intended audience with a review of what all this technology comprises and where the real risks lie in its delivery lie.The author contends (and looks to support such contention via this paper) that by applying baseline project and risk management processes to the procurement of this widely misunderstood black box technology, the quality of the final outcome can be much improved, driving innovation, reducing both cost and significantly mitigating delivery risk.CITATION:Taylor, G M, 2014. In process simulation, more reliable prediction of industrial results and evaluation of data for design purposes and process optimisation may be attained by the combined use of: the modelling and simulation of ore characteristics, and 2. the modelling and simulation of the process. It is well known that geostatistical methods allow the defining of models of orebodies in which the variables considered are the grades of the valuable components. These models are proper for reserve estimation, geostatistical contouring, design and simulation of the exploitation method, and, in addition, for evaluating the variability of the ROM which is expected to be fed to the processing plant. However, no data are normally incorporated in the orebody model in order to evaluate the ore characteristics relevant for a reliable process simulation. The procedure for process simulation aimed at predicting plant results normally used so far consists in collecting samples from different orebody sites and building up a so-called 'representative sample'. On this sample, the ore characteristics (eg liberation, washability, grindability, etc) and the processing tests are referred to as the 'average behaviour in the orebody', assumed constant. A more reliable methodology consists in collecting samples from different orebody sites, in performing tests to characterise the samples from the point of view of the process (ore patterns), and in using synthetic parameters (process features). The values of the parameters are processed using geostatistical methods in order to develop a model for simulating the feed to the process. The estimation may thus be referred to the amount of recoverable minerals instead of to the existing minerals. Furthermore, the selection of the processes, the sizing of equipment and the design of control devices, as well as the prediction of results, become more accurate and reliable.
