The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) is Australia's largest company with widespread commercial interests ranging from steel productin to minerals, oil and gas recovery. While these interests are worldwide, the Company operates or is partner in more than 30 Australian mining ventures. BHP Engineering (BHPE) is the in-house consultant to BHP but is also the largest consultancy in Australia available to general industry. Australian Groundwater Consultants Pty Limited (AGC) is a large, independent consultancy offering specialist services in all aspects of water resources, waste management and environmental engineering, both in Australia and overseas. AGC is particularly well regarded within the mining industry and has a considerable record of providing solutions for mine water related issues. By drawing on the extensive combined experience of AGC and BHP Engineering, this paper will summarize some of the unique ways in which water interacts with and impacts on mining operations in Australia, particularly in matters such as: Slope Stability Drainage and Dewatering Production Cost (Transport, Drilling, Blasting, etc) Water Supply Water Management Tailings and Waste Management Environmental Issues. The paper will also illustrate the cost benefit of providing major engineering works for reduction in total mining cost. It will be shown that, through advance planning and close interaction between outside experts (ie consultants) and on- site personnel, very significant operational cost savings can be made while at the same time achieving a safe and responsible mining environment.

For hot mines, the use of mechanical refrigeration machines has become an essential feature of ventilation and cooling systems. Over the last 30 years, considerable effort has been made in developing refrigeration strategies and equipment to provide cooling that is cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient. In addition to these general design requirements it is necessary to take into account project specific factors such as long term mine cooling needs, operating strategy and installation time. This paper examines a number of actual mine cooling installations which illustrate how these features have influenced the design and installations. For many mines, it is known how the cooling requirements will increase as the mine develops, based on the life of mine plan. The design of the cooling installation must cater for both short- and long-term needs. The initial installation (to meet short-term requirements) must form an integral part of the ultimate cooling installation and as additional equipment and refrigeration machines are installed, it is necessary to ensure that the system remains cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient at all stages. For many mines, refrigeration machines are installed on surface and either operated near-continuously, or for the summer months only. Different maintenance strategies and policies with regard to standby equipment are highlighted for three mine installations. In spite of developments in cooling strategy, the cost of providing refrigeration remains expensive and many mines delay the introduction of refrigeration, as long as possible. When it is finally accepted that refrigeration is absolutely necessary, it is frequently necessary to æfast trackÆ the installation. To minimise site erection time and meet installation deadlines, factory pre-assembly and standardised modular equipment are widely used.

The issue of flyrock is critical to the operation of all mineral extraction sites that use blasting. This paper takes a risk-based approach to identifying, analysing and managing the flyrock hazard. The basic cause of flyrock generation is a mismatch between the energy available and the work to be done. It should be noted that the energy available depends on the charge confinement. This mismatch can be caused by an abrupt decrease in rock resistance (geological weaknesses), overcharging, inadequate delays between holes and rows, inappropriate blast design and inaccurate drilling. The mismatch can come about from two sides; either too much energy (charge) for a fixed burden (work to be done), or insufficient burden (work to be done) for a fixed charge. The main mechanisms of flyrock generation are rifling, cratering, face bursting and secondary blasting. Each source mechanism has different characteristics in terms of vulnerable locations and each requires different control measures. However, all controls require a high level of quality control and assurance. A range of different approaches for managing flyrock risk and determining blast clearance zone dimensions are presented. A prescriptive consequence-based approach is discussed. A conventional risk matrix based approach is outlined with some innovation regarding controls rating and uncertainty ratings. A published semi-empirical approach is discussed. Two examples of quantitative flyrock risk analysis are presented; one involves bench blasting based on a published paper and the second is a cratering example developed by the author based on consulting projects. Finally, a stochastic approach based on published work is presented which simulates cratering superimposed on face bursting mechanisms. Also, a stochastic analysis undertaken by the author of the cratering example is presented. Effective blast emission management is required for two reasons; firstly to reduce and/or eliminate safety risks and secondly to manage public perception of blasting risks such as flyrock. The conclusion of the current research is that the wild flyrock risk can be estimated using existing techniques. Furthermore, both qualitative and quantitative risk management methods as discussed in this paper can be used for flyrock management for a given blasting situation. A combination of both is considered to be best practice.

Metallurgical accounting can be defined as the monitoring of the valuable metals from the time the ore is broken at the primary crusher until the time that we have the saleable products and residues. The overall purpose of metallurgical accounting is to provide management with up-to-date inform- ation that can be used to control mining and metallurgical oper- ations. The decisions that are taken on the basis of the information that the metall- urgical accounting system provides should result in improved control and, ultimately, increased revenue. The current state of accounting is a result of an extended evolutionary process and will continue as process plants bec- ome more sophisticated. Differences in mine æcall factorsÆ and grade control reconciliation can lead to frustration between the siteÆs geoscie- ntists and its metallurgists leading to a level of distrust in the mill grade. Metallurgical accounting is not included in sufficient detail in undergraduate courses and the acceptable industry standards have developed based on what is considered acceptable to industry personnel and consultants. There is now the AMIRA P754 Metal Accounting, Code of Practice and Guidelines Handbook or reference manual. Computer based databases and spreadsheets have transformed tedious bookkeeping into an important management tool. Over time these standards have improved with developments in analytical procedures, weighing technology and sampling. This paper provides anecdotal examples of problems and improvements observed over a number of years within the gold industry in Australia and overseas.

Water is an integral and essential part of mining business. Two issues crucial in the management of this resource, scarcity and excess, are increasing awareness of the importance of water and changing the value perceptions of the industry because they affect both the existence and continuation of the business. Therefore its value should be reflected in the water management that is practised on site. Historically water in mining has been perceived to be of low value so management practices have not been good or well implemented. Political and social transformation in South Africa has been accompanied by the promulgation of new legislation. South African water law is now underpinned by Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) principles. It impacts water pricing, provides for water pollution charges, prioritises water users, has specific mining and water related components and requires water licensing as part of the licence to mine. Mining no longer has a priority on water resources and has to compete with other water users to gain access to resources. New institutional arrangements are being put in place to implement the regulations. All this requires a paradigm shift in miningÆs view of water. Generally the sector is still catching up with the new requirements, principles and philosophies. However, the way in which South African mining values water is changing. This is demonstrated in partnerships between the industry and other water users. These partnerships are Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in practice and they achieve sustainable development goals. These partnerships are essential for mining to stay in business, expand operational capacity, reduce impacts, prevent legal action and reduce reputational risks.

It is recognised by the current JORC (1999) code that resource classification involves the interaction of numerous qualitative and quantitative criteria such as data quality, geological continuity and grade continuity. No prescribed criteria and rules will work for all situations or even between different ore types within the same deposit. Also these criteria and rules are sometimes applied without a clear understanding of their appropriateness, accuracy or correct implementation. For these reasons case studies are useful to evaluate and compare criteria commonly used to assist in resource classification. In this paper blasthole data from a selected area of Joffre Member hosted ore of the Brockman Iron Formation at the Mt Whaleback orebody are used as the basis of a case study for the above-mentioned purposes. Iron grade, in per cent, is interpolated from a blasthole dataset into a block model using ordinary kriging. Samples are then removed from this blasthole dataset to produce a random sample grid, a semi-random sample grid and a regular sample grid. Using nearest neighbour, inverse distance squared, ordinary kriging and sequential gaussian simulation, block iron grades are estimated using these three blasthole data subsets as inputs. This provides four groups of estimates with the ordinary kriging estimate based on the complete blasthole dataset being considered to represent the true estimate of iron grades. Also generated during this process are estimates of the error for each block. These error estimates range from the simple, such as drill spacing, through to more advanced methodologies such as kriging efficiency and simulation. These estimates of grade and grade estimation error are then compared to the true estimate using graphs and statistics. In order of increasing accuracy the block grade estimation and simulation methods were nearest neighbour, inverse distance weighting, ordinary kriging and finally conditional simulation. The simulation in some instances doubled the accuracy of individual block grade estimates when compared to nearest neighbour and inverse distance weighting estimates. It was found that many methodologies for estimating the error of individual blocks performed equally well with only methods such as average drill hole spacing and classification by search ellipse pass number performing poorly. An approach on how to convert the abovementioned error estimates of individual blocks into a meaningful JORC classification is also discussed. Although advanced non-linear resource estimates are applicable, most iron ore mines are still using relatively straightforward methods. The use of blasthole data and some simple linear interpolation methods and simple linear based error estimates makes this study repeatable for most iron ore sites and their resource geologists. This style of investigation is recommended as a useful approach for the Competent Person to apply to their deposit and thus better select, implement and understand the criteria used for resource classification and provide more consistency and confidence in the resource classification process.

As the mining sector increasingly embraces the sustainability agenda, and implements thorough environmental reporting in support of its case for a continued æsocial licence to operateÆ, there is a need for ever-clearer metrics for key areas of impact. It is clear that natural waters are both the predominant pathway and main recipient of the environmental impacts of mining. A new approach to summarising the impacts of mining operations on water quantity and quality is proposed, adapted from an existing generic framework, which is increasingly used to quantify the æwater footprintsÆ of cities and nations. This includes both direct water use and ævirtual waterÆ use, implicit in goods and services used by the mine. In contrast to the existing formulation of æwater footprintÆ, it is here argued that it makes hydrological sense to express the water footprints of mines in areal terms, as equivalent catchment areas. It is also important in the mining sector to capture systematic changes in the scale of impact, which can be anticipated and predictively quantified over the full life cycle. This includes the essentially infinite post-closure phase, during which æremanent water consumptionÆ occurs, either through physical water loss (eg by evaporation from pit lakes) or by ongoing contamination of sizeable flows of natural waters. Methods for assessing the water footprints of mines are now available, and the time is increasingly ripe for them to be applied in earnest in environmental reporting. An example application to a mine in a humid subtropical area of South America is presented. In that case, the mine site itself extended over 106 ha, whereas the maximum water footprint exceeded this by a factor of 27. Although the water footprint can be expected to decline by a factor of ten immediately after closure, sustained evaporation from pit lakes and tailings dams with water covers will gradually increase the remanent water consumption rate, such that the final post-closure water footprint remains about 25 per cent of that encountered during the peak of mining.

The Henderson Mine has been utilising a continuous panel caving method to extract molybdenum ore since starting operation in 1976. In the past three decades since the mine was designed, many changes have taken place in underground technology as well as the general nature of the mining business. The impacts of larger scale underground equipment and automation are significant at Henderson and continue to reshape the nature of the enterprise. During the first years of operation in the 1970s, Henderson required almost 2000 employees to achieve full production, today only about 400 people are required to fully utilise the plantÆs capacity. The most recent change to the facility is the conversion from a rail haulage system to an underground crushing and conveying system that transports ore 25 km to the Henderson mill site. This change has required the introduction of large, rubber tired haulage trucks underground and the mining methods necessary to develop the large openings demanded by the trucks and underground crusher. The development of the underground crusher is also the first step to mining the final bottom horizon of the orebody. Along with this move comes an opportunity to almost triple the effectiveness of the mining effort, through higher draw columns and wider draw bell spacing. This final advancement to a totally trackless mine has positioned Henderson well for safe and efficient operation as it enters the 21st century.

A quarter of the North Island, New Zealand is covered by weathered volcanic tephras of mainly andesitic and rhyolitic compositions. Rapid weathering of basic volcanic glass and slower weathering of acidic glass have produced short-range order alumino-silicate clays such as allophane. Although amorphous to x-rays they have a high degree of local structure. Allophane comprises hollo spheres of approximately 40 diameter and 7 X wall thickness. This small particle size and morphology gives a very high surface area (up to 800 m2/g). Ferrihydrite is another short-range order clay of similar small size and high surface area; it has ò formed from the rapid oxidation of water containing ferrous iron derived from volcanic rocks. The quantity of allophane present in tephra depends upon the climate, the nature of the volcanic glass and the time it has weathered. In New Zealand highest amounts (-50%) occur in beds of andesitic ash deposited on old ignimbrite surfaces with mean annual rainfalls >1600 mm. Both allophane and ferrihydrite will react with oxyanions, such as phosphate, arsenate or borate, and remove them from solution. Other anions such as fluoride also react with aluminium sites on the mineral surface. At NZ Soil Bureau, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Zealand, techniques have been developed for granulating allophane to enable it to be used to remove pollutants from solution without dispersion into the liquid phase. This granulated allophane can be used to remove phosphate from sewage effluent or fluoride from tap water without having a sedimentation stage to remove the clay.

Groundwater geochemistry is controlled by chemical interactions with aquifer rocks, and offers a powerful geochemical exploration technique for locating concealed mineral- isation. Techniques are applied for identifying constituents of aquifers using the compositions of their groundwaters, collected from the surface through drill holes, water bores or springs. Even slowly moving groundwaters have passed through large volumes of rocks which surround any sample site. Products from these rock-water contacts modify the groundwater. By relating water composition to the minerals from which the dissolved species may have been derived, geochemical exploration information is obtained for a significantly larger zone than is represented by drill hole rock samples. In this paper we describe some solution chemical tech- niques we are applying in mineral exploration, particularly in areas of Australia where ground- waters are highly saline and contain enhanced concentrations of trace metals. EQUILIBRIUM MODELS FOR SALINE GROUNDWATERS Central to our technique is the assumption that in low rainfall regions, aquifer rocks and contained groundwaters are in chemical equili- brium. Solubility calculations then allow us to predict upper limits to the soluble products of groundwater interaction with aquifer rocks and to identify minerals with which the groundwater is saturated. Whilst equilibrium calculations require input of concentrations of all dissolved species, they are actually based on "activity" of dissolved species rather than the analysed concentrations. Unless waters have very low ionic strengths (a measure of total dissolved solids), activity of a solute is not equal to its analytical concentration but equals concentration multiplied by an "activity coefficent". Several methods exist for calculating mineral solubilities. The ion-association model, commonly used in programs such as WATEQ (Truesdell and Jones, 1974) and later deriv- atives such as MINTEQ, assume the formation of complex ions such as MgSO4(0), CaCl+, which are described by formation constants. The sole reason for a mine to exist is to extract the finite mineral resource. Accurate grade control is critical to the economics of any mine. If grade control is not optimised, then no matter how good the downstream processes are, the full potential of the operation will not be realised. The detailed implementation of grade control varies but typically consists of sampling and assaying to determine the location of the ore zones. A lot of time, money and effort are spent defining the location of the ore as accurately as possible à but then it is blown up! The effect that blasting has on grade control is rarely adequately accounted for when the rock is excavated because there has never been an accurate and practical method for measuring blast movement. This paper draws on over six years of research into measuring and understanding blast movement, which started at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) of the University of Queensland. The research has made a unique contribution to open pit blasting by helping to develop a practical tool for measuring blast movement, which was then used to improve the understanding of three-dimensional blast movement dynamics. However, these achievements would be of largely academic interest without taking the final step of using this technology and knowledge to account for blast movement by translating the ore polygons in response to the measured movement vectors. This paper provides an overview of blast movement but focuses on one site where blast movement was measured during three separate periods, with significantly different orientation of the mineralisation on each occasion. The theoretical ore loss varied from nine per cent to 24 per cent. The differences are primarily due to the orientation of the ore polygons relative to the direction of movement. The optimum grade control solution is a combination of accurately accounting for blast movement and designing appropriate blasts.

Nickel phytomining is a low cost alternative to traditional nickel mining and a complementary process to existing mining operations in areas with low-grade nickel soils or nickel waste material. The process of nickel phytomining consists of growing selected hyperaccumulator plant species (‘metal crops’) on Ni-rich (ultramafic) soils, followed by harvesting and incineration of the biomass to produce a ‘bio-ore’ from which Ni salts or Ni metal may be recovered (Chaney et al, 2007). The ‘metal crops’ are selected on the basis of high biomass yield combined with high Ni concentrations (>1 per cent) in the above-ground biomass (Chaney et al, 2007). Currently, Alyssum murale and A. corsicum have been used for Ni phytomining trials, mainly undertaken in Albania and USA (Bani et al, 2015; Li et al, 2003), while the agronomy of <10 species has been tested in temperate regions (Nkrumah et al, 2016). Nickel phytomining has high economic potential; however, large-scale demonstrations are needed to provide ‘real-life’ evidence for commercial operations (van der Ent et al, 2015). Unrealised opportunities exist in tropical regions for commercial scale Ni phytomining. To date, the agronomy of tropical ‘metal crops’ has not been tested. Ion exchange using strong base resins is a well established technology for the recovery and purification of uranium from sulfuric acid leach liquors. Production of uranium at the Beverley Mine in South Australia includes acidic in situ leaching, ion exchange and uranium precipitation. The salinity present in the groundwater results in a relatively high concentration of chloride in the leach liquor reporting to the ion exchange plant. The impact of chloride on the ion exchange process is discussed in this paper. The results presented show that an increased chloride concentration in the lixiviant solution feeding the ion exchange plant leads to increased uptake of chloride by the resin during the loading cycle. At the highest chloride concentration studied (7.5 g/L Cl) chloride took up to 60 per cent of the resin loading sites. The impact of the chloride can be summarised as follows: for a given uranium concentration in the lixiviant feed solution, the uranium loading decreased with increasing chloride concentration; a consequence of decreased uranium loading is an increase in the frequency of elution, with an associated increase in elution reagent costs; and for a given elution efficiency, the uranium concentration in the barrens is expected to increase with increasing chloride concentration.A few options were examined to counteract the impact of chloride: an increase in elution efficiency was targeted to reduce the amount of uranium returning to the loading circuit; increasing the pH improved uranium loading, but this was found to also increase iron extraction; and preliminary screening of alternative resins showed that the higher the theoretical ion exchange capacity of the strong base resin, the higher the uranium loading.Work is continuing on uranium recovery from saline leach liquors, specifically investigating the performance of alternative resins.

This paper addresses the actions of the Australian mining industry, its regulators and educational providers towards ensuring that a pool of competent mine managers is maintained in Australia and that mine management remains a desirable career path for future mining professionals. The Australian and global mining industries are experiencing an acute skills shortage. Mine managers, traditionally drawn from the ranks of mining engineers, are at the sharp end of this shortage. Exacerbating the shortage is a perception that a professional mine manager is not an attractive career option. This perception is influenced by the following forces which combine to make the role of a modern mine manager very demanding:legislative requirements for owners and managers to ensure (guarantee) the safety and health of employees; an increasing trend towards prosecution over exposure to risks to health and safety a need to be more aware and responsive to community and environment; financial, technical and æpeopleÆ pressures traditionally associated with the job of managing a mine; and mine management roles being filled by younger and less experienced professionals. Universities and other educational providers have the challenge of both ensuring that undergraduates are exposed to these issues during their study and continuing to promote mine management as a desirable career option. Anecdotal and statistical evidence indicates that young graduates are choosing and remaining in technical roles rather than taking on the challenge of mine management. Furthermore, it is suspected that the issues referred to above are contributing to the low retention rate of young professionals at mine sites. The challenges are not insurmountable, however. This paper reviews the initiatives of industry, the regulators and educational institutions in addressing these challenges. It includes a focus on:prosecution policies and their impacts, tertiary education program content and delivery modes, CPD initiatives of the Mine Managers Association of Australia, and alternative pathways for obtaining mine management qualifications.

The use of scrapers in mining and earthmoving operations is not new; in fact they are one of the earliest methods of bulk earthmoving. A single machine, which can load, haul, and dump material with a minimum of ancillary support is a highly productive and cost-efficient method of earthmoving. In recent times scrapers have been unpopular due to perceived problems and operational limitations, but the last couple of years have seen a resurgence in the use of scrapers in the Bowen Basin as a primary prestripping tool. The main operational limitation of scrapers is the economic operating range. Maximum productivity and lowest cost per bcm is achieved on short leads, as the lead distance increases the cost per bcm quickly reaches and then overtakes that of an truck-excavator fleet. The geometry of a ætraditionalÆ coal mine does not readily allow short leads for prestrip fleets due to the nature of dragline stripping operations. The strip arrangement means that material has to be taken around the end of the pit, meaning a longer haul distance than the actual point-to-point distance between load and dump. This can be alleviated by using pit bridges, however these can cause spoil problems for draglines if not properly planned and have been avoided by many mines. Due to the economic haul distance limitation of scrapers, truck-excavator fleets have become the normal method utilised. Currently more geologically complex mines are opening up, which do not allow traditional down-dip strip mining to occur. Cross-dip mining methods allow for short leads between prestrip loading and dumping areas, hence scrapers and bulk doze are realistic alternatives to a truck-excavator fleet in the prestrip environment. Keeping the lead distance to a minimum a fleet of 657Æs can move material at a very low cost. The other main operational limitation of scrapers is the type of material that can be economically excavated. Hard material can lead to damage to the bowl, free-flowing sand will not readily stay in the bowl leading to reduced load factors. Ripping the material with a dozer prior to excavating can lead to improved loading time, and greatly reduced GET consumption. When considering scrapers for prestrip operations a number of things must be considered: is the lead distance within the economic haul distance? should twin power (push-pull) or single power (dozer pushed) scrapers be used? do I need to rip, what should I rip with? what ancillary support is required? is there another system already available on-site which is currently under utilised? This paper considers the parameters under which large twin power scrapers are the most effective way of undertaking prestrip operations.

Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific (MMPT-AP) has been working with many mining companies worldwide performing æMine to MillÆ or Process Integration and Optimisation (PIO) studies. MMPT-AP has developed a proven methodology to improve the efficiency of the mine-mill interface and gain maximum benefit. The PIO methodology involves rock characterisation, mathematical modelling and simulation to generate a list of operational and control changes for both the mine and concentrator. Following the methodology, the list of recommendations is developed relatively easily; the more challenging part depends on the company. Success of a PIO project relies on the ability of an organisation to implement change û both operationally and culturally: the human element. When a PIO project is started, there is initial interest and commitment from the company. But how can this be maintained? How does an operation know if the benefit continues? MMPT-AP is now developing long-term relationships with clients to ensure that the increased production and improved efficiency continues. Direct and indirect measurements are used to determine the key factors involved and to understand the cause/effect relationships. Simulation tools also can be used to compare current with recommended practices û so when material properties vary over time, the benefits can still be quantified. PIO is about empowerment: by measuring and understanding what parameters affect concentrator performance, the site personnel now have the knowledge to make a difference. Rather than simply reporting variable or poor concentrator performance, operations can predict when production will be affected and put controls in place to prevent it from happening. This requires support and commitment from the company or æbuy inÆ. Ensuring this buy in continues is the challenge facing every company involved in PIO work û but the benefits are well worth it. This paper will review MMPT-APÆs experiences in implementing PIO projects in the long term: from both the consulting and operational viewpoints. MMPT-APÆs involvement with a number of companies will be discussed as examples of what works and what does not.

Open cut mining in Australia is facing the greatest challenge in its history in attempting to compete not only with other operations internationally, but also with underground operations domestically. Most flat dip and shallow depth surface-mineable coal reserves have been depleted during the last two decades and new open cut operations must extract deeper coal deposits. As open cut coal mines move into deeper areas and the stripping ratios increase, the relative cost of overburden removal also increases. It therefore becomes even more important to design the mine around the optimum overburden removal scheme. The deeper mines are usually multi-seam operations with a more complex geology and with more geotechnical and hydrological problems. Deeper mines are subjected to greater problems requiring more detailed mine planning and design, such as selection of the optimum mining method and pit layout. In planning and design of such operations, the number of alternative methods which need to be considered is consequently greater.Dragline productivity and its stripping capabilities are directly affected by the selection of digging method, strip layout and pit geometry. Every mine has a unique combination of geological conditions. The operating methods that work well at one mine may not necessarily work at another site. Selection of an optimal stripping method, strip layout and pit geometry for a given dragline must be considered with respect to the geological conditions of the mine. With increasing geological complexity of Australian strip mines, it is becoming more important to use sophisticated techniques such as computerised mine planning methods to assist in optimising dragline operations.

BHP Diamonds and their joint-venture participants DiaMet Minerals, Chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson are currently developing Canada's first commercial diamond mine in the arctic barren lands of the Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada. The paper reviews the early history of the project leading up to the discovery of the first kimberlite pipe in September 1991, diamond exploration techniques and the subsequent advanced exploration and development work carried out at the site. In many aspects, this exploration work represented a development project in itself. Coinciding with the advanced exploration work, the project team prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and went through federal review of the project at the highest level. Ridgeway Gold Mine is part of Cadia Valley Operations which is wholly owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited. Ridgeway is an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation mining approximately 5.6 Mt of gold-copper ore per annum. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grades, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These factors have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Drawpoint recovered grades are routinely reconciled back to design data to monitor and assess draw performance. Grade control at Ridgeway has been based upon sampling the ore from SLC drawpoint bunds using 15 kg grab samples combined to form 30 kg samples prior to assay. This large sample size was selected in an attempt to representatively sample the coarsely-sized broken ore, the samples collected having a nominal diameter of about 130 mm. The assay results for gold and copper from these samples are extremely variable and the usefulness of the results has been questioned by the mine, particularly given the onerous and OH&S hazardous activity of handling large sample masses. Granulometry testwork at Ridgeway confirmed the extent of the relationship of decreasing sample grade variability with particle size. Based on this relationship, drawpoint sampling tests were carried out using 9 kg samples sieved to -45 mm at the drawpoint site. The gold and copper results from the finer 9 kg samples were significantly less variable than those from the normal, coarser 30 kg samples. The variance reduction was similar to that predicted from broken ore sample theory for the selected sample mass and nominal particle size. This relationship therefore allowed Ridgeway to assess the sample mass and particle size required to achieve a particular precision. In addition to improving the precision, the reliability of assay results from smaller samples from the fine particle fraction for drawpoint control depends on the accuracy of the results. The assumption is that the grade of the finer ore is similar to that expected from the lot, or that if a bias exists, then the extent of this bias is acceptable and consistent enough to be accounted for in the grade control system. The distribution of grade with particle size and the reconciliation of drawpoint sample and mine results is currently under investigation.

Mining operations in arid regions are compelled to reduce their consumption of fresh water. Closed water circuits are an attractive solution and, in addition to reducing freshwater consumption, have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption as well as the environmental impact by eliminating effluent discharge. Accumulating ionic species have been shown to hinder collector adsorption which reduces the recovery of valuable minerals. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of degrading water quality on collector adsorption however there is very limited understanding as to how this takes place from an electrochemical perspective. This study therefore aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying concentrations affects the electrochemical adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto galena. The synthetic plant water used in this study comprised of single salt solutions to isolate the effects of the ionic species of interest. The ionic strengths were varied between 0.0242 M, 0.0727 M, 0.1212 M and 0.2426 M which correspond to University of Cape Town (UCT) Centre for Minerals Research (CMR) synthetic plant waters of 1, 3, 5 and 10SPW, respectively. Mineral rest potentials indicated how changing water quality affected xanthate-mineral interactions. Microflotation observed the impact of changing water quality on mineral floatability.
