BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... In this paper it is argued that we are entering a new mining era, based on considerably more challenging orebodies as we rapidly expand minerals production by exploiting previously uneconomic deposits. Rapidly increasing production costs cannot be sustained by continually increasing commodity prices, as illustrated by the recent downturn in the industry.Driven by reduction in grade, requiring the processing of 50 to 100 per cent more ore to recover the same amount of metal, often accompanied by finer grain structure - necessitating a finer product size and more challenging recovery - the productivity of the mining industry is dropping in real terms. The author suggests that tweaking current technologies and relying on economies of scale will not turn the industry around, but rather a switch to considerably more efficient processing is required.It is imperative to utilise the properties of the orebody, especially in terms of variability, in revolutionising our processing techniques. Our new mantra may be æselective mass mining with flexible processingÆ. This paper explores how this may be implemented using current technology and equipment in order to change the cost profile of the new mining industry. Orebody knowledge, based on the underlying process drivers, rather than proxies, is required. These properties and their variability will need to be propagated into the orebody through utilising the geological data rather than smoothing block averages, which destroys information on variability.Novel flexible circuit designs are presented that can respond to a wide variability in ore properties and throughput requirements in order to slash processing costs and energy utilisation, while enhancing overall recovery. The success of these circuits will be based on an ability to predict at both design stage and in everyday processing the variable ore properties, which is dependent upon reliable orebody knowledge that caries variability and underlying processing properties.CITATION:Powell, M S, 2013. Teleseismic travel time residuals measured on 600-1000 km seismic arrays across the Rio Grande and East African rifts provide evidence for upper mantle low velocity zones beneath each rift of velocity contrast 6%-8%. Refraction studies show thinning of the crust below the rift axes. Regional uplift which extends hundreds of km either side of the axes, is isostatically compensated by negative density contrast at depth. Since the refraction argues against compensation by thickened crust, compensation in the upper mantle low velocity zones is suggested. Temperature effects alone can not explain the reduced velocities. Generation of a few percent of partial melt is the most probable source of the reduction. A passive extensional mechanism is investigated for the Rio Grande rift in which hot asthenosphere intrudes the lithosphere raising its temperature and generating moderate melting. It requires less than 1% extension to explain the melting but a prodigious 26% to raise the temperature from a pre-rifting continental geotherm to the solidus. Geological estimates find that extension is less than 10% over the uplift zone. Such a mechanism is possible only if the prerifting lower lithosphere geotherm lies closer to the solidus than that of stable continent. This is supported by the observed high heat flow in the Rio Grande rift uplift region which, given the long time constant for thermal diffusion, reflects elevated temperatures at depth well in advance of the onset of rifting.

At Ohio Creek, 3 km northwest of the Thames bonanza goldfield, porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation is hosted in a dacite porphyry associated with porphyry intrusion breccias and overlying andesites and dacites. The geological setting is a Jurassic greywacke basement overlain by Late Miocene andesite-dacite volcanics which are extensively altered to propylitic and argillic assemblages. Diamond drilling at Ohio Creek in 1978-1981 by Amoco Minerals intersected low grade Cu-Au (0.12-0.20% C~ 0.23-0.4 glt Au) mineralisation An advanced argillic 'alteration cap containing quartz-alunite¦dickite or pyrophyllite-dickite¦diaspore is centred on the adjacent Lookout Rocks and has potential for high sulfidation Au-Cu mineralisation. There is a zonation from potassic K-feldspar-magnetitealteration at depth in the dacite porphyry, through an overlying phyllic quartzsericite- pyrite zone which is overprinted by pyrophyllite in the overlying advanced argillic cap. Early quartz stockwork veinlets associated with the potassic alteration contain fluid inclusions that trapped a highly saline (50-80 wt% NaCI equiv) fluid at high temperatures (450 to >600¦C) indicative of a magmatic fluid. Some chalcopyrite is associated with slightly later quartz-magnetite veinlets, but the bulk of the copper occurs as disseminated chalcopyrite associated with the phyllic alteration. The potassic alteration is surrounded and overprinted by propylitic chlorite¦epidote alteration. Late polymetallic sulfide-quartz-anhydrite veins occur within and around the margins of the porphyry system as in the Kaiser Reef. Fluid inclusions associated with these late veins were formed at temperatures of about 250-320¦C from low salinity (1-3 wfl~ NaCI equiv) fluids. The spatial association between porphyry eu-Au mineralisation, advanced argillic alteration and polymetallic sulfide veins suggests that they are genetically part of the same hydrothennal system. This is consistent with reconnaissanceK-Ar dates of 11.6-10.7 Ma for the intrusive porphyry at Ohio Creek, alunite in the advanced argillic alteration zone at Lookout Rocks and sericite selvedges from the Waiotahi gold-quartz veins at Thames.

The ready solubility of gold in dilute aqueous solutions of the cyanides of the alkalies or alkaline earths provides a convenient method for the separation of the precious metal -from the large surplus of associated materia1. The finely ground ore is pulped with a weak solution of cyanide, agitated to dissolve the gold, filtered and washed. The lowgrade filtrate is then clarified and the gold precipitated by some electronegative agent, the most usual being finely divided zinc or zinc dust. The slight precipitate is collectedon some form of filter coated with a filter aid, the filter cake being then known as "gold slime".A typical analysis of this slime is given in Table 1.

About 15 per cent of total electricity (400 MkW) was generated by nuclear power plants in the world (2009) and about 36 000 tons of uranium has been mined in uranium mines annually. Radioactive waste material is produced from uranium mines and nuclear power plants. The wastes must be disposed or stored safely for long-term. If they leak and/or move from disposal or storage sites due to air/groundwater flow, then a serious environmental pollution can occur. Hence, multi-layer system has been proposed and employed in order to seal off these radioactive waste materials from biosphere. Basically, bentonite is now used for establishing absorbing and sealing layers in this system. However, the amount of high quality betonite is very limited and in some cases it is hard to be obtained.On the other hand, a great deal of refuse from coal burning plants is produced every year and the amount of it is expected to be higher each year, especially in developing countries. More than half of flyash is utilised and the remaining is disposed at the disposal sites. However, the life of the disposal site is limited and it is diff cult to find a new disposal site. It is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the flyash be increased in every field.From the above two points of view, a flyash-based barrier layer/cover system is considered in this research and this paper discusses the applicability of flyash as a content of barrier layer/cover material based on the results of a series of laboratory tests.

ZINC concentrate, produced at Zeehan by flotation from Read Rosebery ore, is also dried and roasted at the same place for the production of a calcine suitable for use in the electrolytic zinc process at Risdon, Tasmania.DRYINGThe concentrate, dewatered to 12% moisture by an American filter, is fed into a dryer, the type of construction of which is similar to that of a duplex Edwards furnace. The dryer is 45 ft. long and 14 ft. wide, and has two rows of nine rabbles each, the two pairs nearest the firebox being watercooled.The longitudinal distance between rabble-centres is 4 ft. The rabbles are rotated at a speed of 3 r.p.m. by a I5-h.p. motor. Zinc concentrate is introduced by a screw feeder, consisting of two parallel-blade conveyors, revolving in opposite directions at aspeed of 31 r.p.m.Draft is supplied by a Sirocco fan, 15 in. intake, operated at 1340 r.p.m. by a 10-h.p. motor. The dust carried by the exit gases is removed in a wooden scrubbing tower, 3 ft. 6 in. x 4 ft. 6 in. x 27 ft. high, to which the fan delivers, and down which water issprayed.Wood (eucalyptus timber) is used as fuel, the consumption per ton of water evaporated being 0.55 :ton. Zinc concentrate from the dryer passed either to trucks for shipment or to Herreshoff furnaces. The portion for shipment is withdrawn at a point half-way down the furnace, being loaded on to a belt conveyor for transfer to railway trucks. The moisture at this point is 7% to 8%.

Energy comes at great cost to our world and societies and therefore we should use it wisely and optimally. Societal pressure is enforcing this and the industry must respond by being proactive.The mine-to-mill approach to integrated mine and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill optimisation demonstrated that throughput gains of up to 20 per cent could be obtained through a closer match of blasted run-of-mine ore to the feed best treated by a SAG mill. Since that approach was developed, new drivers have risen to prominence including environmental costs and impact of energy, water, waste. This is set against a backdrop of reducing ore grade and increasing demand that is pushing up our impact on the environment. The new challenges demand new approaches.This paper explores the opportunities in taking traditional approaches to optimisation to new levels of two-way integration and incorporating potentials for ore upgrade into circuit design. The new mantra may be æflexible circuitsÆ û designing and building for the present and the future by allowing for the uptake of new and future technology.

A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.

Small orogenic gold deposits have the same deposit-scale geological and geochemical features as those that characterise giant orogenic gold systems (>16 Moz Au). Therefore, a broader-scale approach is needed to identify the critical controls on giant deposits and their disproportionate distribution throughout time and space. Ages of giant gold systems cluster around well-defined periods of lithospheric growth at continental margins, and it is orogen-scale processes during these Late Archaean, Early Proterozoic and Phanerozoic times that determine gold endowment of a province.   A critical factor for giant orogenic gold provinces appears to be asthenospheric upwelling at the time of gold mineralisation to most effectively transfer the thermal energy required to initiate and sustain high hydrothermal fluid flux. The extent of this fluid flux should be related to thickness of the lithosphere beneath a province at the time of gold mineralisation, such that giant gold deposits are much more likely to develop in orogens with oceanic or thinned continental lithosphere. A proxy for the latter is likely to be a short premineralisation crustal history such that thick subcontinental lithospheric mantle was not developed. Conversely, orogens with protracted premineralisation crustal histories are more likely to have a thick subcontinental lithospheric mantle, which is difficult to delaminate and, hence, such provinces will normally be poorly endowed. The nature of the lithosphere also influences the intrinsic gold concentrations of potential source rocks, with back-arc basalts, transitional basalts and basanites enriched in gold relative to other rock sequences. Thus, segments of orogens with thin lithosphere may be defined by conjunction of giant-scale fluid flux through gold-enriched sequences.   Although the nature of the lithosphere plays the crucial role in dictating which orogenic gold provinces will contain one or more giant deposits, the precise siting of those giants depends on the critical conjunction of a number of province-scale factors that control fluid conduits, traps, and seals in tectonically and lithospherically suitable terranes within accretionary orogens.

Economic conditions after WorId War II made the recovery of Australian sources of sulphur one of considerable national importance. From 1947 to 1949 an investigation was made of recirculation techniques to produce acid plant grade gas from the Dwight-Lloyd down-draught sintering plant.During 1949 it appeared feasible to produce a gas of suitable 802 concentration and a decision was made to construct a gas purification train and a 150 tons/day contact acid plant. However, a number of difficulties remained in the production of the gases for sulphuric acid manufacture and as a result of research conducted to overcome these troubles the continuous up-draught sintering process was developed.The principal difficulties were:(a:) The down-draught sintering practice, as developed, produced an unusually high metallic lead precipitation in the windboxes. The disposal of this lead interrupted sintering operations and the delivery of gas to the acid plant.(b) The production capacity of the existing sintering plant was fully extended and the adoption of recirculation of gases, in an endeavour to satisfy acid plant requirements, would probably reduce the plant production capacity.(c) The prevailing high temperature of water available for purification train cooling required a higher than...

Quarries around Auckland have reached or are reaching the ends of their lives, which raises issues about rehabilitation. Significant volumes of 'cleanfill' are generated by the City, particularly during phases of urban renewal and development. Emplacement of the fill in quarries removes the problem of fill disposal and provides an opportunity for restoration of the quarry site.There is a compatibility between quarrying and cleanfilling because at quarries:Truck routes are already established Neighbours are accustomed to the effects and appropriate buffer distances have been established Bringing fill into a site attracts aggregate sales and is very efficient. Fill originates from construction sites and ad-hoc excavations and therefore it is not surprising that sampling has shown the quality to be variable. Both Winstone and the Auckland Regional Council have surveyed undisturbed soils in the region to attempt to determine natural background levels of common contaminant substances. Comparison of these levels with delivered fill shows that a high proportion of delivered materials can be regarded as mildly contaminated. Therefore the term 'cleanfill' is, in the Auckland region at least, a misnomer and the term 'managed fill' has been adopted.Historically and presently the only control on quality of 'cleanfill' has been some visual inspection. This leaves the fill operator open to potential liability for creating a contaminated site. Implementation of controls at WinstoneÆs operations has progressed slowly, over some ten years. This is mainly due to the perception that mobility of contaminants within and out of the landfill will be very limited because of the near-neutral pH and abundance of clay minerals in the fill. The methods of control and results of environmental risk assessments at WinstoneÆs Puketutu Island Quarry will be briefly described.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. After a snap-shot survey of water quality of streams draining various coal measures carried out in 2000 - 2001, West Coast Regional Council expanded its monitoring programme to better establish the condition of streams draining coal mining areas and to characterise the variability of water quality with respect to stream flow. Samples were collected for water quality indicators such as pH, sulphate, turbidity, conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen as well as macro-invertebrates, fish and assessments of stream habitat. Water quality sampling was carried out at 27 sites on 21 streams located from Page Stream near Seddonville in the north, to Seven Mile Creek near Dunollie in the South, and to Garvey Creek east of Reefton. There was relatively low variability of pH, conductivity and sulphate concentrations at most of the sites sampled. Conductivity and sulphate concentrations reduced with increasing flow and pH generally increased. Significant effects on macro-invertebrate and fish populations were identified at several of the sites where water quality sampling was undertaken. Of the water quality parameters tested, macro-invertebrates were mostly affected by pH. Although not sampled directly (conductivity was used as a surrogate) heavy metal concentration may explain some of the variation in macro-invertebrate communities. Three creeks affected by mine drainage were sampled for fish and no fish were present. Fish appear to be more sensitive to acid rock drainage that invertebrates. Using data from this survey and other studies conducted in the region, the total length of stream that is actually or highly likely to be adversely affected by acid rock drainage was estimated at 125 km. This figure is useful as a gauge as to the magnitude of the issue in this region and for setting of priorities for remediation. However, as it is only an estimate based on limited sampling sites, it should be used with caution.

A method for the determination of microgram quantities of uranium in leachates from low grade uranium ores is described. Solubilized manium is purified by transfer to an organic solvent by a selective solvent extractionprocedure using tributyl phosphate, iso-octane, and aluminium nitrate. The organic phase is mixed with scintillation fiuors in toluene and the radioactive decay determined in a liquid scintillation counter. The method is sensitive and reproducible in the range 3-30 µg uranium.

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

A good deal of experimental work has been done from time to time on the application of compressed air to the elevation of wet pulp. On account of the flat nature of most of our mill sites elevation of the pulp has to be provided for, and the various methods in vogue show considerable loss of time, in the replaceing of wearing parts. During the last two years the writer has carried out a great many experiments with a view of devising an elevator that will give continuous work with a minimum of wear.The results do not show a high efficiency for the power employed, but the lift is continuous in operation, very cheaply installed, and possesses no wearing parts. The lift was tried working in a bore hole of 8 in. diameter, but in many cases it is more convenient to sink a small well for the purpose. The result to date showed that the most efficiency was obtained when the depth of the wellwas not less than the height of the lift required. The pressure of air required in pounds per square inch was (approximately) half the number of feet to be lifted.In the majority of cases the lift required varied between 20 ft. and 50 ft. and the air pressure required between 10 lbs. and 25 lhs. per square inch. In most existing installations the air compressors in use were delivering air to the receivers at about four times that pressure, and when air so compressed was expanded to perform its work at a reduced pressure, it was apparent that the power exerted in origInally compressing the air above the working pressure required at the lift was absolutely lost.

State ownership of mineral in the ground is not newthe Regalian Right is an ancient concept. And the compulsory purchase of land and the minerals beneath it by the State or a body approved by the State (Fitzgerald, 1952) was a principle well established and enforced in practice over a hundred years ago, when such powers became a practical necessity during the period of railway building in Britain and elsewhere:The acquisition of mineral properties which stand in the way of public construction projects still goes on. But in recent years nationalization is being increasingly undertaken as part of the planned use of national resources, for the closer regulation of economic activities, or merely, so it would seem, as a matter of political expediency or national pride. For instance, the unsevered coal in Britain came under State ownership in 1938 in an attempt to simplify a complex pattern of freehold titles which were impedingplanned mining operations. Later, unsevered minerals became a factor in negotiations arising under various town and country planning acts. The acquisition of the Rio Tinto mines by the Spanish Government implies political aspirations.
