Abstract Due to the blocking nature at the crusher station, straightforward application of queuing theory cannot give realistic results on the performance of a shovel-truck-crusher system. A new queuing network-based model has been developed in which, the crusher station is formulated into an open queuing network and the whole shovel-truck-crusher system into a closed queuing network with the crusher station as a special server. To fully account for the influence of blocking, Monte Carlo simulation is first used to obtain the performance parameters of the open queuing network for the crusher station. The closed queuing network for the entire system is solved by applying the Extended Summation Method (ESUM), in which the crusher server is described by the simulation results. The model has been applied to the Yuanbaoshan open-pit coal mine to analyze its shovel-truck-crusher system and to improve its efficiency. Results indicate that the blocking at the crusher is an important factor affecting the crusher output and in turn the efficiency of the whole system, and prove that the model can realistically describe the behavior of such systems.

"The need for energy conservation has been of increasing concern since the early 1970's, when the cost of petroleum based energy began to escalate rapidly and security of supply became uncertain. The cost of energy from alternative sources has also increased due to development costs and environmental restrictions.These developments have had a serious impact on the mining industry, which is energy intensive. The impact is magnified as lower grade ores are treated, and more energy is consumed per unit of product. In many cases increased operating cost is not compensated by the rise in product selling price.The magnitude of energy consumption in the mining industry is indicated by recent studies conducted in the U.S.A. and Canada. "INTRODUCTIONTo bring a mining property into production in the Canadian High Arctic a company must deal with the harsh environment, the short shipping season and the high cost of labour. In trying to minimize the effect of these factors, the concept of a barge-mounted process plant was investigated as an alternative to the conventionally built concentrator. Cominco's previous experience gained at the Black Angel Mine on Greenland's west coast suggested that this would be a practical alternative.The normal shipping season at Little Cornwallis Island is approximately six weeks long, from mid-August to the end of September. All equipment and materials must be delivered during this small ''shipping window."" The logistics problems are enormous; if the conventional approach had been used the major process equipment would have been delivered to Little Cornwallis Island at the same time as the completed barge actually was! Construction would also be starting at the start of the worst climatic conditions, the Arctic winter. Nine months production was gained by opting for the ""Barge"" approach.What the Arctic winters do to the shipping season, so do they affect the productivity and the cost of labour. Construction labour must come from southern Canada. Thus higher transportation costs and higher wage rates, with more overtime and incentives, increase the labour costs to approximately 50% over normal southern rates. Couple these rates with the lower productivity involved with men working in the extreme cold temperatures and the net effort is worth avoiding. A process plant being constructed in Southern Canada can take advantage of more accessible labour at lower costs, increased productivity and a faster construction schedule. The barge concept must still deliver the equipment and materials during the ""shipping window"" but it can in the completed form."

"Total iron ore reserves in India, as reported by the Indian Bureau of mines, are 23.6 billion tons. Hematite iron ore reserves constitute about 45 % of the total reserve. If we go by the National Steel Policy-2005 projections, India’s supply of hematite iron ore would not last more than 40 years. Laboratory investigations were carried out for the development of a process flow sheet for treating low grade as well as Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ) iron ore. The purpose of these investigations was to aim for better resource utilization.Beneficiation studies were conducted on samples of low grade and siliceous iron ore from the Dalli mines, a captive mine of the Bhilai Steel Plant and BHQ ore from Southern states of India. The process flowsheet, developed for upgrading of low grade iron ore, incorporates wet screening of the ore at 0.5 mm, followed by grinding of the +0.5 mm fraction to below 0.5 mm. The whole –0.5 mm fraction, after grinding, was treated in a conventional hydro-cyclone and stub cyclone followed by treatment in Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS). This resulted in a concentrate product having >66% Fe content from a feed containing 55.5% Fe with an iron recovery of 48 %. The process flowsheet developed for treating BHQ ore in the laboratory resulted in an increase in iron grade in the concentrate from 43.4 to 61.3 Fe % with a yield of 51.7 % .INTRODUCTIONThe classification of Indian iron ore resources have been made compatible with United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), which is more scientific and has been adopted in most countries in the world. Iron ore reserves and resources estimated using the UNFC classification system, as of April 01,2000 are about 12,906 million tons of hematite ore and 10,628 million tons of magnetite ore. The Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) has given a breakdown of these reserves by designation as either lumps or fines of hematite iron ore (Table 1). The percentage of the reserves reported lumps and fines are 42 and 34% of the total reserves respectively. High grade iron ore is less than 10% of the total reserve."

"The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected milling conditions of calcium carbonate. A variety of grinding media material and bead sizes, along with 2 different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data was used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions.INTRODUCTIONAs a result of increasing energy costs and raw material prices it is important to look at the efficiency of the manufacturing process. Wet grinding and ultrafine wet grinding in stirred media mills are now a possible cost-effective production step for the processing of industrial minerals and precious metals. The generation of smaller particle sizes (down to micrometer scale) can be advantageous for further production steps – i.e. better liberation of precious metals or improved industrial mineral qualities.In the following, the wet grinding process is investigated under different milling conditions of calcium carbonate. Different grinding media materials varying in specific weight, bead size and stirrer tip speeds are used to determine optimal energy consumption for the milling process.DESCRIPTION OF TEST CONDITIONS AND PARAMETERSMill ParametersTests were performed in a Drais Laboratory Perl Mill PML H/V with an installed electrical motor power of 3 kW. The mill chamber is silicon carbide where as the stirrer and discs are made of yttria stabilised zirconia. The mill working volume is 0.9 l. A screen cartridge with a screen size of 0.2 mm is used to separate the beads and slurry at the outlet of the mill. All tests were performed with a grinding media filling grade of 80% (Mill working volume). The stirrer tip speed was set at 6 m/s and 10 m/s."

"Drilling and blasting are fundamental operations in the mining cycle and constitute an important component of the mining costs. Problems associated with improper drilling and blasting practices can create losses of several millions of dollars per year. For this reason, a Blasting Technology program was initiated in 1984 at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC). In this paper, advances made at NTC in drill and blast technology are reviewed. Impacts of drilling and basting for Noranda are assessed in terms of dilution and ore losses. Future challenges are addressed. IntroductionUp to 1997, Noranda was a diversified natural resources company that operated in three sectors: mining and metallurgy, forest products, and oil and gas. "To recover more valuable ore and considering the complexity of minerals, the needs to grind finer is increasing. To reach the desired fine grinding targets, using the existing grinding media size, the energy consumption is increasing exponentially. As already proved at this conference, small grinding media represents the best potential to improve grinding efficiency. How do the small grinding media perform in industrial grinding mills?The use of small grinding media in regrind mills proved that finer grinding can be achieved at lower energy consumption. In ball mills, smaller grinding media versus 25 mm media generate a power saving from 10% to 44%. In vertical stirred mills, the power saving increases from 20% to 60%. More potential savings have been identified.For the same operating conditions, how a vertical stirred mill is performing compared to ball milling? In regrind application, a vertical stirred mill with small media (5-12 mm Millpebs) will require at least 62% less energy than a ball mill charged with 25 mm grinding media.INTRODUCTIONIn some mining applications, fine grinding is needed to liberate further the valuable ore. The purpose of regrind mills is to achieve the last stage of grinding before final flotation stage: the cleaners. In part because of high prices of small grinding media as well as availability, the most widely used size of grinding media is 25 mm.When calculating the recommended ball top size from Bond’s formula (Bond, 1961), the size for regrind applications is much lower than 25 mm. Today, the barrier for small grinding media is broken. They are best suited in regrind application. The size of grinding media is one of the most important variables affecting the mill efficiency (McIvor, R., 1997; Nesset, J.E., Radziszewski, P., Hardie, C. & Leroux, D.P., 2006).Conventional ball milling was discarded for fine grinding because of its very poor energy efficiency (Zheng, J., Harris, C.C. & Somasundaran, P., 1994; Yan, D.S., Freeman, M. & Dunne, R., 1995). Therefore, new technologies as stirred mills were developed to grind finer more effectively. Three fundamental questions should be asked. What is the best fine grinding technology? What should be the best media size to use? Is it possible to grind finer by using less energy with the existing regrind equipment?"

This paper presents the results of a research investigation leading to the development of a technique for the measurement of the surface permeability of Indiana Limestone. The tests are conducted on a cuboidal block of the limestone with a flat surface that can be sealed to create a circular aperture through which water influx can take place. Computational results for Darcy flow are used to interpret the results of the experiments. The water entry area can be moved over the surface area of the block to investigate, quite conveniently, the distribution of permeability across the surface of the limestone block sample.

"Froth depth, along with reagent addition and aeration rate, is one of the crucial factors that can be used to control a flotation circuit. Sub-optimal setpoints and disruptions in levels have a severe adverse influence on grades and recoveries. A novel control strategy has been developed which provides exceptionally tight regulation of pulp levels. The controller observes and acts on all the flotation levels simultaneously. This provides a clear improvement over the standard approach, which is to use a set of Pl controllers. The system has been run on several industrial plants and has resulted in reduced fluctuations in level; fast responses to setpoint changes, and fast settling times after start-ups or disturbances. Testwork has shown that the improvements in level stabilisation translate into improvements in recovery and grades.IntroductionProcess control and optimization have an important influence on the economic efficiency of flotation plants. Inefficient operation can allow the wrong balance between grades and recoveries, and can also lead to adverse shifts in the grade-recovery relationship. Of all metallurgical operations, flotation loses the largest proportion of valuable material. Better operation can reduce these losses.An essential requirement of a good controller is that it should be able to stabilize and regulate the plant. Stable operation allows the performance of the plant to be observed without being obscured by the effects of disturbances and fluctuations. The optimum conditions can then be detected more easily. Good regulation can maintain operation at the optimum with proper neutralization of disturbances. Only when good stabilization and regulation are achieved can an optimizing strategy be properly applied.Froth depth, aeration rate and reagent addition are the three means by which a flotation plant is generally controlled. These control actions are effective on different time scales. Reagent addition is slower in its effect as some conditioning time is required. Since reagents are only added at the head of the circuit and at a few selected points within the banks, time is required for the effect of reagent changes to move through the circuit. Because of this slower time constant, reagent addition is more suited to process optimization and to dealing with slower changes in the process. An example of these slower changes is variation in the feed."

"Some non-flotation chemistries are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust. Since the dosage levels are generally not very large, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect a specific chemical has on the productivity of the flotation circuit. Hudbay and Ashland Water Technologies developed a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5 ppm to 500 ppm). Laboratory results indicate that this protocol helps to predict the potential interference that a particular chemistry will have on the flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONFrom a chemical perspective, flotation is a very complex system involving more than the reagents used for flotation. Along with collectors, frothers, modifiers, suppressants and activators, there can be antiscalants for water treatment, dust suppressants used in the mining process, residual flocculants from recycled thickener overflows, grinding aids, and many other types of chemicals that are added upstream of a flotation circuit. Although these other chemicals are usually used at very low doses, it is important to know if they affect the flotation process detrimentally in the event of a spill or a build up from recycled water.Laboratory flotation testing of these chemicals characterizes their effects, but testing at expected doses in the float can mask the effects of the chemicals in the plant. Also, simple tests that do not measure the kinetics of flotation do not reveal the effects the other chemicals have on the flotation circuit. Thus, a new flotation protocol was needed to expose the full effects of chemical additives and to assist in choosing the chemical with the lowest potential for a negative effect.FLOTATION KINETICSMeasuring recovery kinetics in a laboratory flotation cell is a well-established procedure: analyzing concentrates taken in a timed sequence to determine the recovery rate of individual cells in a flotation circuit. The recovery from the early flotation cells are a true measurement of how well a flotation chemical is performing. Mining operations, whether new or existing, are constantly looking for ways to maximize production and improve energy efficiency, while keeping the footprint required to a minimum. The Nordberg MP1250 cone crusher was designed with these three goals in mind. A series of side-by-side evaluations comparing an MP1250 to an MP1000 were completed at two Freeport-McMoRan operations. The first evaluation began October 2009 in a tertiary position and the second began March 2010 in a secondary position, where it remains in full production today. Utilizing 25% higher power capacity than the existing MP1000 tertiary crushers, the MP1250 had 29% higher capacity and 17% lower specific energy, adjusted for differences in feed and product size. The MP1250 compared to the existing MP1000 secondary crushers achieved 30% higher capacity at a slightly reduced specific energy, while achieving a finer product. The MP1250?s higher capacity and energy efficiency may have application in many crushing plants. Depending on site specific economic factors, greenfield projects may benefit from a smaller footprint and less ancillary equipment, whereas brownfield projects may benefit from higher capacity or a finer product within the same footprint.

"The Star Lake Mill was commissioned by Cameco (formerly Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation) in 1986 to process a small high grade gold deposit in a remote location of Northern Saskatchewan. The lean approach to the 200 t. p. d. CIP mill to minimize capital and operating costs employs a number of unique features which are described along with highlights from the initial two years of operation.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe Star Lake Mine is located 520 kilometers north of the City of Saskatoon (Fig. l) with the nearest population centre in La Ronge 130 km to the south. Gold showings were first discovered in the area in the 1940's with the Star Lake ""21 Zone"" ore body discovered in 1983. The Star Lake Mine started operations in 1986 becoming the first primary gold producer in Saskatchewan in over 40 years. The mine is operated by Cameco (formerly SMOC) with 50\ ownership in a joint venture with starrex Mining Corporation (35\) and Uranerz Exploration and Mining (15%).The limited reserves coupled with the remote location and the price of gold ($300-$350 u.s./oz) at the time the project feasibility was being assessed required a lean approach to make the short term operation successful. This paper describes the approach taken in the design and construction of the Star Lake Mill and describes the mill operation with highlights of the initial two years of operation."

As a growing mining company, ERAMET is looking for new positions on the strategic metals market. In this context, the Gabonese Maboumine pyrochlore deposit is currently being studied for the recovery of niobium, tantalum, rare earth elements (REE), and uranium. This ore shows mineralogical and chemical characteristics that make it challenging to process by already known practices, from both technical and economic points of view. In this context, ERAMET has developed since 2008 an innovative hydrometallurgical process which has been successfully operated at a pilot plant scale. While the upstream part of the process aims to dissolve the valuable elements in sulphuric acid, the downstream part of the process aims to recover them separately in a marketable form. The focus here will be on the recovery of the REE. The ore deposit contains approximately 1.4% of REE including 87% of light REE and 13% of medium-heavy REE. The challenge in this process lies in the fact that the major elements in the matrix are iron and aluminum. An innovative process has been developed in order to recover all of the REE in these unfavourable conditions, described in this paper.

This paper discusses the author?s work identifying international law norms of consultation with indigenous communities and poses a potentially counterintuitive argument that corporate stakeholders? interactions with indigenous communities may have effects on the content of those norms. The claim is counterintuitive because the international law of pertinence is customary international law, which arises from consistent state practice and opinio juris (a belief by states that they are acting in a way they are legally bound to do so). Customary international law traditionally has no reference to corporate conduct per se. The paper first surveys several sources on developing international law on consultation obligations. Then it references the impact these norms can have on corporate stakeholders in industries like mining. Then, it poses an argument as to an economic ratcheting effect that can occur through various agreements between corporate stakeholders and indigenous communities that then feeds through into international law via several mechanisms. The consequences for mining companies are diverse and include the possibility that conduct by one company can have longer-term implications for the obligations of other companies and, indeed, of states. The effects will differ in the context of different competitive environments and may actually have effects on the economics of different competitive models.

"Particulate ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is used as a filler and coating pigment in a wide range of applications including papers, paints, plastics and films. In this paper we will overview the requirements for GCC used in both filling and coating applications in the paper industry and highlight the processes used in the production of these materials.INTRODUCTIONCalcium carbonate is both abundant and very widely distributed occurring most commonly as limestone, marble and chalk (Harben 2002). Given, the high purity, whiteness and relative inertness of these materials it is not surprising that they are heavily utilised in a range of industrial applications. Worldwide ground calcium carbonate (GCC) capacity is estimated at 50.5 million tonnes per year (Roskill, 2002). This usage is divided between relatively coarse materials that are used in applications such as landscaping, cultured marble and carpet backing and finer grades that find application in plastics, rubbers, inks, paints and paper. Given the usage of calcium carbonate products across a very wide range of consumer products, the outlook for GCC is very promising with growth expected in many markets. Growth is anticipated across many applications in the emerging nations and more specifically in paper applications on a global basis.Over the last several decades the GCC processing industry has evolved to be well adapted to both the cost effective production and delivery of standard products and the production of high performance speciality products. Many of the standard unit operations found in the metaliferous raw material processing industry are also used, albeit in some cases in modified form, in the processing of GCC. Coarse products (diameter > 3 - 10 µm) are typically produced by dry processing routes. Whereas, the finer products are typically produced by a combination of wet and dry processing."

Conventional waste management practices produce two waste streams for the construction of separate disposal facilities. The design of tailings impoundments is usually controlled by physical stability. Waste rock materials offer high shear strength characteristics for waste dump construction, however the hydraulic properties promote oxidation. The problem of oxidation is significantly reduced for tailings due to a fine texture that augments water saturation. Co-mixing of tailings and waste rock involves the intimate blending of tailings and waste rock to create a new material with superior physical and hydraulic properties. The new material has a low hydraulic conductivity, low compressibility, high water retention capacity and high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock restrict oxygen entry and water seepage to minimize acid generation and metal leaching. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock may be used to construct cover systems, internal barriers and seals, confinement structures and full depth waste repository. The results of a laboratory program to characterize the physical and hydraulic properties of Comix tailings and waste rock are presented here. Various ratios of tailings were blended with three distinct waste rock materials. The saturated hydraulic conductivity for the Co-mixed materials was found to vary between 2 x 10-7 m/s and 5 x 10-8 m/s depending on blend ratio, waste rock type and compaction. This paper introduces concepts for the co-disposal of tailings with waste rock and evaluates the hydraulic behaviour of a Co-Mix waste system. The potential benefits of Co-Mix are shown for a typical mine.

Au printemps 2011, la Corporation minière Osisko met en production le gisement Canadian Malartic, qui devient la plus importante mine d?or à ciel ouvert au Canada. Pour lui faire place, elle a déménagé un quartier de 205 maisons et construit 6 nouveaux bâtiments institutionnels. Les démarches ont commencé en 2006. La compagnie a d?abord établi l?emplacement du nouveau quartier résidentiel, en collaboration avec la Ville de Malartic, puis fait la conception de ce quartier de manière à refléter au mieux les caractéristiques du quartier à déménager. Elle a ensuite effectué une opération d?assignation consistant à proposer à chaque propriétaire intéressé un lot dans le nouveau quartier. Au total, 140 résidences ont été déménagées en 2008 et 2009 et 65 été rachetées par la compagnie, le tout par des ententes de gré à gré sauf pour un seul cas. La réussite d?une opération d?une telle importance sociale n?a été possible que parce que la compagnie s?est assurée d?un soutien massif de la population et des autorités pendant tout le processus. Cette expérience peut être fort utile pour les nombreux projets miniers dont l?insertion dans la communauté est un enjeu important.
