The ACACIA Reactor - Introduction What is it? The Acacia Reactor is a fluidized bed high intensity cyanide leaching system. Purpose for its existence? The Acacia Reactor was developed to treat high grade gold concentrates generated from primary gravity concentration systems. Why intensively cyanide leach a gravity concentrate? Current secondary upgrading processes, such as tabling, create significant losses of fine gold that is initially recovered in the primary gravity concentration units. Additional benefits include improved security and a reduction in health hazards associated with calcining.

"This paper evaluates the effect of grind size on the flotation performance of a platinum ore from the UG2 reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, in South Africa. The study was conducted on the Mintek Flotation Pilot Plant Facility, located in Johannesburg, and represented a thorough evaluation of the application of the flotation modelling methodology developed jointly by the University of Cape Town and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre at the University of Queensland through the AMIRA P9 Project. A simulation model of the pilot plant data was successfully implemented, providing a set of circuit modelling parameters that appeared to be both consistent and well correlated to measurable characteristics of the ore and the pilot circuit operating conditions. The findings indicate that the methodology that was used could well provide a useful framework for developing optimisation criteria for industrial flotation circuits in combination with appropriate feed grind size and regrind size targets.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been recognised that the size distribution of an ore is one of the most important factors in the determination of the performance of a flotation process. It therefore follows that the optimisation of a flotation plant cannot be considered without due recognition of the interdependence of this process with the process of comminution. There are numerous qualitative guidelines for the selection of an optimum grind target for a particular operation. Mineralogical analysis can readily provide information on liberation as a function of grind, and the desirable particle size range for optimum mineral flotation is well established in both theory and practice (see for example Trahar, 198 1). For some operations, meeting these two criteria simultaneously is relatively simple. For the majority of operations, such mineralogically “easy” deposits, if they ever existed, have long been exhausted, and the optimum grind represents a highly complex compromise between liberation and overgrinding of both desirable minerals and gangue. This is particularly true for circuits that include regrind stages, where both primary and secondary (and sometime even tertiary) grind targets must be specified. As has been pointed out in a recent paper by Bazin and Hodouin (2001), there is little or no information in the literature to assist plant engineers in the selection of optimum grind targets for complex ore deposits, so current practice is primarily based on rules-of-thumb and experience. This problem is further compounded by the fact that once grind targets have been selected for a particular operation, the assessment and adjustment of these targets based on plant surveys is extremely difficult, time consuming and expensive, and is often not attempted unless the plant significantly underperforms relative to expectation. It is therefore clear that the development of a practical quantitative approach to this problem is a high priority for flotation research and development studies."

"The Porgera orebody is located in mountainous terrain in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea. An underground mine has been developed which produces up to 2000 t/d of ore grading over 2 ozs Au/t. Some 79% of the gold in the ore is free, with the balance in a highly refractory form as sub-microscopic gold evenly disseminated within a pyrite matrix.This paper describes the metallurgical plant that uses flotation and cyanidation circuits to effectively recover the free gold in the ore feed, allowing for wide variation in the gold head grade. The refractory gold component in the ore is stored as leached pyrite flotation concentrate and this concentrate will be later treated by autoclaving techniques to recover the contained gold.The ProiectThe property is located in the Porgera Valley 600 Km North West of Port Moresby. The remote location is 2500 m above sea level. The mine area has 3600 mm of annual rainfall and a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 10° c to 22° c throughout the year.Alluvial gold was reported in the Porgera area in 1938 and has been an important source of revenue for the area for many years. Intermittent exploration was carried out until the 1960 1 s when Placer (PNG) Pty. Ltd. with Mt. Isa Mines commenced an extensive exploration program. The property was brought to production in 1990 by the Porgera Joint Venture group consisting of Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Rennison Goldfield Consolidated Ltd. and Placer Dome Inc, each with a 30% ownership and the Government of Papua New Guinea with a 10% share. Placer Dome Inc. is the manager of the property with construction under the direction of the Placer Dome Technical Services group."

"The carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process has been the dominant gold recovery process since the early 1980s. CIP has proven to be very adaptable for a wide range of ores and circuit configurations. The key performance indicator for CIP circuits is the minimisation of soluble gold losses to tailings, however, it is also important to operate the circuit efficiently (maximising gold loadings on carbon and minimising carbon inventory). Over the last 30 years the Curtin Gold Technology Group has studied CIP circuits as part of an on-going collaborative industry funded project (the AMIRA Gold Processing Technology Project). In the early years the project undertook basic research into understanding activated carbon, and its management in the circuit. More recently the development of process models and instrumentation has provided additional tools to assist operators. The results show that while most CIP circuits operate well, there are still significant opportunities for further cost savings, or additional revenue. This paper reviews the observations arising from this work, including key requirements for good carbon management, the results of benchmarking and industry surveys of carbon circuit over 20 years, the value of process modelling of CIP circuits to establish operating parameters, and the use of automated instrumentation to better optimise carbon control in the circuit.INTRODUCTION The introduction of activated carbon to recover gold from cyanide leach solutions in the last quarter of the 20th century was the most significant development in gold ore processing since the advent of cyanidation seventy years before. Replacing the Merrill–Crowe zinc cementation step with carbon-in-pulp (CIP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits provided a process that allowed the treatment of lower grade and problematic ores (e.g. high-clay ores), at lower capital and operating costs, and higher metal recoveries. The CIP circuit was first developed in the 1950s at the Carlton Mill, Cripple Creek, Colorado. All the components of the modern CIP process came to fruition at the Homestake Mine in South Dakota in 1973 (Fast, 1988). From the late 1970s onward a variation of CIP, carbon-in-leach (CIL) which combined the leach and adsorption stages, became the preferred circuit design in most parts of the word."

This paper studies two methods that account for risks associated with gold mining projects such as mineral risks and country risks. The first method is sensitivity analysis, which investigates the effects of a change in any economic parameter such as operating cost, capital investment, gold price or taxes on the viability of the project. The second method is Monte Carlo Simulation technique, which takes into consideration the simultaneous random variation of the economic parameters on the project's viability. An automated simulation cash flow model has been developed as part of this paper. Sensitivity analysis and the simulation model have been used to investigate the economic viability of the Dokrupe Gold Project (DGP) serving as a test case. It is concluded that, the Monte Carlo Simulation technique gives a more realistic judgement of the economic viability of gold mining projects.

"This preliminary paper provides a summary of lab and mill flotation investigations into the copper collector at two Canadian operations. The orebodies illustrated in these studies both contain mainly copper and zinc with uneconomic quantities of lead. Silver is also present as a secondary precious metal.Each mill has advanced to the extended mill trial stage with Uniflot SP129 as the sole copper collector. The preliminary metallurgical results have indicated higher copper circuit zinc and lead rejection is possible as shown in Case Study #2. In Case Study #1, improved zinc circuit metallurgy has been realized during all the Uniflot copper circuit collector trials. A slight increase in silver recovery has also been observed in the extended trials at both operations. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian base metal industry is presently going through a rationalization period in response to low metal prices and low grade ore bodies. The response from flotation mills has been to reduce costs by incorporating new technologies such as energy efficient large cells, low moisture pressure filters and low steel consumption SAG mills. Other optimization strategies have been incorporated to get better metallurgical performance such as improved process control and monitoring techniques.The newer flotation plants have embraced many of the latest equipment innovations but they continue to incorporate off-the shelf reagents like xanthate and methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC) . New collector chemistries have been mostly unsuccessful. Our approach incorporates the best of the old and new chemistry into proprietary formulations that match the application. We have found most single chemical formulations cannot meet the demands of the optimized modern flotation plant."

"Decisions regarding mining method and subsequent choice of excavator must take into account the quantitative factors of productivity, availability, and capital, operating, and maintenance costs. Dig performance was compared between a hydraulic excavator (HE) and electric rope shovel (RS) of similar size class (i.e., use the same amount of energy to excavate a unit quantity of the same material from a mining face), focusing on the quantitative factors above. Machine performance, normalized to bucket capacity, was assessed as a function of hours of service (60,000 hours per machine). Results showed higher production rates for the HE of similar capacity and age. In general, the RS exhibited lower service cost per volume capacity, though it had higher capital cost. "BHP-Billiton’s Minera Escondida Limitada is one of the world’s largest copper producers. It treats a combined 88 million tons of copper ore per year through its two concentrators: Los Colorados and Laguna Seca. Over the past three years, metallurgical sampling has been performed at the Laguna Seca concentrator to calibrate both the JKSimMet and JKSimFloat grinding and flotation simulators. In the past, the calibrated simulators have been used to predict the effect of changes in operating conditions in the grinding and flotation circuits separately. To assist in the development of future processing options, predictions were required of the effect of changing grinding circuit conditions on flotation performance. This was achieved by using an integrated grinding and flotation simulation. The grinding circuit performance was predicted under different operating conditions (such as tonnage rate and product grind size) using JKSimMet, and these results were then used in JKSimFloat to predict the flotation performance for the new grinding circuit product. This combination of the simulators allows both the effects of residence time and grind size on flotation performance to be investigated.This paper presents the first combined grinding and simulation modelling and simulation case study using JKSimMet and JKSimFloat. The modelling and simulation methodologies for the grinding and flotation circuits are discussed along with the circuit simulations that were performed. The simulator predictions are presented in conjunction with independent laboratory results of the new operating conditions. The ability to predict flotation circuit performance based on changes in grinding circuit performance is also discussed. This methodology provides improved predictions of flotation circuit performance when grinding circuit changes (including grinding capacity increases) are made.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, the grinding and flotation research groups at the Julius Krutschnitt Minerals Research Centre - JKMRC (Brisbane, Australia), University of Cape Town (Cape Town, South Africa) and McGill University (Montreal, Canada) have been developing a methodology for optimising grinding and flotation plants using actual plant data together with semi-empirical sub-process models. With the extension of milling to refractory ores more intensive investigations on the effect of impurities in the ore on the dissolution kinetics are needed. The present work describes experiments carried on refractory flotation tailings with the object to determine how the recovery of gold could be increased. The effect of arsenic and antimony in the ore and the excessive use of lime are discussed. Climate has an immense impact on the properties of Athabasca oil sands and the ease or difficulty with which it is excavated and extracted. During the winter months, exposed oil sands surfaces freeze. When hydraulic and electric shovels used in the various operations in the Fort McMurray area excavate the benches, large frozen lumps are created. These lumps are either destined for a lump dump where increased costs are incurred due to rehandle, or they are sent to the primary crushers where they can cause significant downtimes by jamming the crusher. The crusher down time can sometimes be in the order of hours of lost production. Studies on data from two consecutive winters at Syncrude Canada?s North Mine show a high correlation between climate and the generation of frozen oil sands lumps. Temperature, ground cover, traffic, bench exposure time, oil sands grade and moisture content all contribute to this problem. A 1D frost penetration model was used to predict the depth of frost expected in oil sands and the corresponding likelihood of frozen oil sands lumps. To combat the challenge of frozen lump generation, a number of proactive and reactive measures can be taken: artificial snow, shallow ponds, scheduling, blasting or ripping.

"Assessment of opportunities to improve mineral processing performance in existing concentrators and in describing undeveloped orebodies is key to improving the business case of a mining company. This assessment has traditionally been performed using the distinct and separate inputs from mineral processing and mineral science.More recently, process mineralogy has been used to integrate these two disciplines. This trend has been driven by the need to develop and process more challenging ore deposits, and has been assisted by the availability of modern automated instruments. Together with the acquisition of a QemSCAN (quantitative evaluation of materials by scanning electron microscope) from CSIRO in Australia, and with the use of a supporting SEM with EDX/WDX capabilities and an XRD, the development of process mineralogy at Falconbridge commenced in 1997.The sampling challenges in presenting a QemSCAN with representative sample material at the polished section level are significant, but have been effectively addressed. The full description of this aspect is beyond the scope of this paper.It is shown that, by use of this approach, the set nature of an orebody can be best exploited with selected flowsheet changes in a concentrator which address the generic characteristics of the orebody. In this way, the flowsheet provides a process that more effectively fits the mineral processing requirements of the ore. This leads to clear and tangible improvements in grade and recovery."

"Gold and silver cyanide complexes are presently desorbed from activated carbon by means of hot caustic elutions. These solutions may or may not contain additional sodium cyanide. There are several parameters which affect the rate of stripping. Some of these include pH, ionic strength, and temperature. (1) Stripping is conducted in recirculating (ZADRA) or once through (AARL) circuits.This paper describes the development of a new chemical eluant which significantly increases the rate of stripping of both gold and silver cyanide complexes from activated carbon. Two case history applications are also described.INTRODUCTIONAdditional cyanide is used in strip circuits in order to prevent its depletion which could lead to precipitation of base metals or lead to a change in the nature of the gold cyanide complex to one which does not strip as easily. (2)The strip circuits that are able to function efficiently without the use of cyanide are mostly those where the carbon is acid-cleaned after stripping.Once the minimum cyanide requirement to maintain the complexes in their proper state are fullfilled, any futher incremental increase in the level of cyanide will have no bearing on the rate of stripping. (3)DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW ELUANTGeneral DiscussionVarious carboxylated materials were investigated including octanoic acid, polycarboxylic acid (various molecular weights), salicylic acid, polymaleic acid, acetic acid. benzoic acid, terephthalic acid, 4, bi-phenyl carboxylic acid, phosphoric acid and stearic acid.The initial work was done on medium activiiy, non acid-cleaned carbon. The silver to gold ratio on the carbon varied greatly.Two different blanks were used. The first was an elution using a 2% caustic and 0.4% cyanide solution while the second was a 2% caustic elution."

"Falconbridge Limited is presently developing flowsheet alternatives for implementation at the Strathcona Mill. The main thrust for change arises from the need to reject more pyrrhotite from the concentrate. To maintain appropriate levels of sulphur in the smelter concentrate, however, enhanced removal of non-sulphide gangue minerals must be realized. This could best be done in the Non-magnetics flotation circuit.Laboratory investigations were followed by an on-stream pilot test at Strathcona. The application of a column cleaner on the Non-magnetics concentrate resulted in significantly lower levels of fine gangue at equivalent sulphides recovery.This paper discusses the laboratory and pilot testing and results, with a focus on piloting. Also included is a discussion of the Strathcona Mill Flowsheet and the role of the Nonmagnetics flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONFalconbridge Ltd. is currently developing means to reduce atmospheric sulphur dioxide emissions. One alternative is a reduction in the amount of pyrrhotite in Strathcona Mill concentrate, which reports to the smelter. Pyrrhotite in the Falconbridge ores contains an average of 39 percent sulphur and 0.64 percent nickel. By comparison, pentlandite contains an average of 33 percent sulphur and 34 percent nickel.A consequence of the rejection of pyrrhotite is a decrease in the sulphur assay in the remaining concentrate. This decrease causes downstream difficulties in the roasting process. Therefore, the content of non-sulphide gangue in the mill concentrate must also be reduced in order to maintain sulphur grades adequate for roasting. The resulting concentrate will have lower sulphur dioxide emissions while maintaining nickel production."

"The flotation of fine particles has been a challenge to scientists and engineers in mineral processing. A novel concept of reactive oily-bubbles as carrier to float fine particles is described in this paper. The reactive oily bubble flotation is considered attractive for fine particle flotation. In addition to the role of fine particle agglomeration by oily films, the surface properties of air bubbles coated with a thin oil film can be better controlled for the desired selectivity by adding certain types and concentrations of water insoluble collectors into the oil phase. This approach can eliminate the addition of collector to the aqueous phase, avoid undesired synergetic interactions among collectors, activators, depressants and dispersants present in slurry, minimize undesired activation of gangue particles and significantly reduce the amount of collectors needed.The concept of using reactive oily-bubble to achieve selective flotation was demonstrated in contact angle measurement and by microflotation tests with fine sulphide minerals: sphalerite and galena in this paper. The flotation behavior of sulfide minerals can be radically modified with adjustment of solution pH, addition of depressant and activator as in conventional flotation. The successful separation between PbS/SiO2, ZnS/SiO2 and PbS/ZnS was demonstrated using mixed mineral systems. Compared with conventional flotation, the reactive oily-bubble flotation showed a stronger collecting power.INTRODUCTIONThe challenge for fine particle flotation has long been recognized and well documented (Fuerstenau, 1980). Because of drastic changes in surface properties of fine particles and associated physicochemical and hydrodynamic conditions of flotation systems, fine particles responded poorly to the conventional flotation processes. For instance, the small mass and hence low inertia of fine particles would result in a low efficiency of collision and attachment of fine particles with flotation bubbles. Large specific surface area of fine particles, on the other hand, would cause an increased reagent consumption. Dominating colloidal forces of fines may cause slime-coating, accompanying a low selectivity (Somasundaran & Arbiter, 1979; Fuerstenau, 1980; Sivamohan, 1990)."

"Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates two mines; one open pit (No. 6) and one underground (No. 12), approximately 20 miles south-west of Bathurst, New Brunswick. Both are massive sulphide deposits containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. The No. 12 property began operation in 1963 and is presently being mined at a rate of 3600 tons per day underground and is in the completion stages of an expansion to achieve 11,000 tons per day underground by the end of 1930.Originally at Brunswick Mining, acid mine drainage was added to tailings and neutralized by an excess of lime in the tailings. A conventional recycle system was established with a biostabilization pond for the treatment of thiosalts, a liming station and sludge settling area for neutralization of acidic water and a final reclaim pond with a pumping station for reclaim water.We found that not more than one third of the reclaim water could be used as it upset the flotation circuit every time it was used. It was established that the mine water and surface drainage were the cause due to oils and detergents in the water. It was also found that the biostabilization pond method Cf thiosalt treatment was not efficient for year round operation in our climate.In 1974, we reviewed the problems and began a 3 phase program to control effluents from the property:"

"A study of the various components contributing to energy costs and their relationships to generally trended operating data, such as tonnage, operating costs, etc. over progressively shorter time periods provides information for an energy audit. A study of annual data gives some insight into the importance of various energy components. As the time frame of the study 11rogresses through monthly, daily and finally, into quarter hourly data, the variations become more evident and most important, strategies develop to minimize energy costs. The results of an audit conducted during the summer of 1978 at Wesfrob Mines are reported to illustrate this important phase, prerequisite to a meaningful energy cost avoidance program.The balance of the paper deals with the energy conservation program at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Sudbury Operations, the material and control equipment, the commitment, the new energy accounting practices and lastly, the policies. Examples of successful energy conservation endeavors include automatic peal electrical load control, waste heat recovery from mine air and compressor cooling water, energy reductions resulting from lower building temperatures and curtailmen: of idling loads. The use of pulse meters to measure the flow of gas, steam, compressed air and electrical energy, with their signals interfaced to process computers, allows monthly, daily and if necessary, immediate reporting of energy and energy per unit of production information. The program so reported at Falconbridge’s Sudbury Operations is credited with an annual cost avoidance of .9 million dollars in a 14.0 million dollar annual energy account."

Mining operations today are characterized by a high degree of mechanization and single machine automation. However, their potential for cost cuttings and increase of productivity in the future is quite limited. Enabled by newest IT and networking technology, the operation of underground mines more and more can be seen from a process related point of view: Standardized Ethernet and Wireless LAN are the basis for a seamless and unified communication backbones providing an integrated infrastructure for data, telephony and video. All the components are available as off-the-shelf devices leading to an excellent cost efficiency. Basing on this standardized infrastructure, the equipment is able to become part of the infrastructure. To enable machines to be integrated smoothly into IT networks, the machine also has to have enhanced networking capabilities. This results in a new system architecture for the on board machine electronics separating real time control from IT and networking level functionality which can be implemented by a Machine Server. This machine server communicates with all kinds of above ground systems using mainly standardized formats like html or the IREDES standard. The Paracatu Expansion Project III in Brazil was implemented between 2006 and 2008 to increase the existing capacity from 20 to 61 Million tons per year of gold ore treatment. This expansion led the Brazilian subsidiary of the Canadian Kinross Gold Corporation to become the single largest gold producer in Brazil and the largest single gold concentrator in the world, with a nominal capacity to treat around 167,000 tons per day of ore. This paper describes the Project Development areas for the Paracatu Expansion, using the approach proposed by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the methodology included in the PMBOK (Project Management Book of Knowledge). The author has more than 20 years of experience in the gold mining industry, having worked as a plant metallurgist, mill superintendent and development manager for RPM until he took the position as the Project Manager of the Paracatu Expansion III in 2005. Luis Tondo has a BSc in Mining Engineering from UFRGS-Brazil, an MScEng from the University of Queensland - Australia and an MBA degree from FDC-Brazil. Luis is currently based in Santiago-Chile, acting as the Project Director for developing projects in Latin America for the Kinross Gold Corporation.

"The Thompson Mill processes ores from the Thompson and Birchtree Mines. While the Thompson ore has very little magnesium containing gangue, the Birchtree orebody consists of veins of massive sulphide in a rock matrix that contains a high proportion of magnesium silicate minerals. A significant fraction of the magnesium is floatable, which lead to MgO levels varying from 3-11 wt% in the Birchtree concentrate. The magnesium in the concentrate causes a higher operating temperature in the smelter, reducing furnace life.Birchtree ore represented 20-30% of the mill ore receipts prior to October 2003. Since then the fraction of Birchtree ore has increased to 50%. A reduction of the MgO in concentrate to less than 3% in the total mill concentrate was required to allow safe and economic smelter operation.In October of 2002 a miniplant was set up to simulate the Birchtree plant circuit. Several flow sheet modifications were tested that led to a proposal for a circuit having increased cleaning capacity for the scavenger concentrate and a recleaner on this concentrate. Addition of CMC in rougher cleaner feed was also found to be required. The solution was confirmed through pilot plant testing in the mill in December of 2002. A full-scale installation was designed, engineered, and installed between February and September of 2003 with commissioning in September and October of 2003. Target metallurgy was achieved one week after start-up on slurry to coincide with the Birchtree Mine tonnage increase. This paper highlights the development, design and commissioning stages of the project.The new MgO rejection circuit has successfully allowed the processing of Birchtree ores producing concentrate consistently below 3% MgO. In addition, the new circuit increased overall nickel recovery in the mill.INTRODUCTIONThe Thompson Nickel Belt located approximately 700km north of Winnipeg was discovered in the early 1950’s. Inco first produced nickel from the area in 1960. Over the years the mill has processed several ores from different ore bodies in the area. Currently the Thompson Mill processes two significantly different ores from two mines, Thompson and Birchtree. The Thompson ore is a massive sulphide orebody hosted in schist, containing feldspars, quartz and biotite. Thompson Ore is characterized by high nickel recoveries and clean, low MgO containing concentrates (<2.5% MgO). The Birchtree ore is ultramafic and contains a high percentage of Mg-silicates such as serpentine, chlorite, biotite, amphiboles and talc. Some of these Mg-silicates report to the nickel concentrate and prior to commissioning of the MgO rejection circuit the Birchtree nickel concentrate typically contained 5-8% MgO"
