"This paper summarizes diamond exploration techniques used in glaciated terrain, focussing on indicator mineral and geochemical methods applied to glacial sediments. Understanding the ice flow history, depositional history, and stratigraphy of glacial sediments is essential to successful sampling, interpretation and follow-up of indicator mineral and geochemical anomalies related to kimberlites. Kimberlite indicator minerals survive glacial transport over long distances and the relative abundance of each mineral in till is a function of the primary mineralogy of individual kimberlites. Indicator mineral distributions observed at a regional scale define the net effect of glacial dispersal, often along different ice flow directions. Local-scale distributions define individual dispersal trains. The medium sand (0.25 mm to 0.5 mm) fraction of heavy mineral concentrates, * GSC Contribution No. 2002028 prepared from glacial sediment samples, is best suited for indicator mineral surveys. The application of till geochemistry to diamond exploration is increasing because it is significantly cheaper than indicator mineral analysis and it can be performed quickly. The <0.063 mm (silt+clay) and 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm (coarse sand) fractions provide the best geochemical contrast between background and kimberlite-rich till. Kimberlite pathfinder elements that provide good contrast include Ni, Cr, Ba, Co, Sr, Rb, Nb, Mg, Ta, Ca, Fe, K, Ti and LREE, the relative importance of which will depend on kimberlite composition and that of the surrounding bedrock.IntroductionIn Canada, glacial erosion is the principal means by which kimberlite and its associated minerals have been dispersed, from a few tens of metres to tens of kilometres down-ice. Post-glacial weathering has had little impact on kimberlite debris in the glacial sediments, thus boulder tracing, indicator mineral methods and trace element geochemistry of the fine fraction of till (“drift prospecting” methods) can be used to detect kimberlite dispersal within areas covered by glacial sediment. This paper provides a summary of drift prospecting methods for kimberlite exploration in glaciated terrain, and includes examples of reconnaissance- , regional- and local-scale kimberlite indicator mineral and till geochemical distribution patterns.Weathered kimberlite is more susceptible to glacial erosion than the surrounding bedrock, thus many kimberlites in glaciated terrain are found in low or swampy ground, under small lakes, or covered by thin (< 1 m) to thick (>50 m) glacial sediments. Glacial erosion has removed varying amounts of the pre-glacially weathered kimberlite and, in some cases, the hard competent kimberlite below. For example, glacial erosion of the Peddie, McLean and Seed kimberlites near Lake Timiskaming, Ontario, removed pre-glacially weathered kimberlite, leaving a polished striated subcropping surface (McClenaghan et al., 1999a). In contrast, glacial erosion of the B30 kimberlite, near Kirkland Lake, Ontario (Fig.1), was much less vigorous and left a >10 m cap of soft and highly weathered dark green clay-rich kimberlite (McClenaghan et al., 1996). The thickness of remaining pre-glacially weathered kimberlite will influence the geophysical signature of the kimberlite."

Mining operations, whether new or existing, are constantly looking for ways to maximize production and improve energy efficiency, while keeping the footprint required to a minimum. The Nordberg MP1250 cone crusher was designed with these three goals in mind. A series of side-by-side evaluations comparing an MP1250 to an MP1000 were completed at two Freeport-McMoRan operations. The first evaluation began October 2009 in a tertiary position and the second began March 2010 in a secondary position, where it remains in full production today. Utilizing 25% higher power capacity than the existing MP1000 tertiary crushers, the MP1250 had 29% higher capacity and 17% lower specific energy, adjusted for differences in feed and product size. The MP1250 compared to the existing MP1000 secondary crushers achieved 30% higher capacity at a slightly reduced specific energy, while achieving a finer product. The MP1250?s higher capacity and energy efficiency may have application in many crushing plants. Depending on site specific economic factors, greenfield projects may benefit from a smaller footprint and less ancillary equipment, whereas brownfield projects may benefit from higher capacity or a finer product within the same footprint.

It is the increasing demand for an economic and cost saving operation mode that requires effective cooling in order to achieve low refractory wear and good furnace lifetime, which is making cooling technology an important aspect of furnace operation. In addition, the requirements for safety are getting more and more into focus. However, the use of water—today’s standard cooling medium—has major drawbacks as it can cause problems both during furnace start up and operation, namely hydration problems, corrosion, and explosion. Not to forget the severe risks for the operators as well as economical damage in case of a malfunctioning water cooling system. With this new and patented cooling technology ILTEC and the ionic liquid IL-B2001 as the cooling medium, it is possible to realise a water-free cooling solution and therefore the door is wide open to rethink existing and conventional cooling solutions. Furthermore, there is also the chance to recover heat from the process in a more efficient way. However, since the technology is novel and unique there are a lot of concerns and doubts regarding safety for plant operators and employees. The paper is intended to cover both: highlighting the enormous potential of the technology but also to eliminate concerns mainly caused by rumour and unawareness. INTRODUCTION All of us are aware of the risks when water is used as a coolant and placed in the vicinity of the liquid metal phase. Unsuitable design solutions or wrong operation modes of the furnaces or failures of refractories can cause a direct contact of water with liquid metal. The consequences can lead to equipment failures, vessel destruction but even worse to injuries and even fatalities. Over the past decades, countless incidences were reported. Fatal accidents caused by water coming into contact with liquid metal happen every year (Oterdoom, 2014; Filzwieser, Konetschnik, Filzwieser, Wallnerm & Preiss, 2014). With the novel ionic liquid cooling technology virtually all negative effects of a water cooled system regarding safety are eliminated and even additional benefits can be provided (Voermann, Ham, Merry, Veenstra, & Hutchinson, 1999;Verscheure, Kyllo, Filzwieser, Blanpain & Wollants 2006; Wallner, Filzwieser & Kleicker 2006). The fact that no explosion occurs when IL-B2001 gets in contact with molten metal results in a revolutionary solution for the metallurgical industry in terms of safety—new safety standards can be achieved.

The work in this paper describes the theory, development and analysis of a computer model simulating a mine operation moving material using concurrent decline ramp truck haulage and skipping practices. This simulation was designed specifically to assess the performance of the truck haulage component and to expand on the scope and capabilities of traditional TKM fleet calculations. Haulage fleet simulation results were similar to TKM calculations for the lower to moderate production rate cases. However, comparisons of ramp-up and high production rate scenarios indicated that the simulation model was significantly more sensitive to operating practices and factors not accounted for by calculations derived when using a single TKM figure. Given the proper calibration of inputs and logic, the simulation model was additionally capable of providing information associated with general mine operations efficiency. Further benefits of the simulation model over a TKM approach included logistical assessments such as production schedule feasibility, productivity trade-off quantifications for proposed operating practices, and the validation of mine resource utilization scheduling. The simulation model was able to expand on traditional methods to approach planning and logistics by considering factors such as truck queuing, real-time traffic interactions, random events, and competition for resources on mine productivity.

"Present day ferrochrome demand is on the rise, as more steel products require this material as an alloying element. It is projected that the stainless steel demands will grow by about 6% per year to 2020; as such, the supply and demand for ferrochrome appears promising. Chromite is the only economical source of chromium, which is commonly upgraded by gravity techniques and used to produce ferrochrome. The gravity separation methods are not able to treat particles finer than 0.1 mm efficiently. Therefore, in processing chromite ore, a large quantity of fine tailings; some 25% of the mineral values have been reported as lost in slimes during processing. The chromite content of these tailings is typically 10-20% Cr2O3 and accumulates into a large stockpile/pond. A chromite concentrator project in Canada, considers a cut-off grade of 20% Cr2O3. This indicates further processing might be required to recover chromite from low-grade stockpile when the high-grade deposits are depleted. Low-grade ores normally indicates disseminated chromite ores with low liberation and consequently fine comminution. This paper reviews the techniques for treating chromite from fine material and provides some examples of successful operations in fine chromite recovery. Beneficiation techniques for fine particles include gravity separation, magnetic separation, and flotation. Several case studies are presented here that used one of the aforementioned methods or a combination of them.INTRODUCTIONChromium is one of the essential element and important material for production of ferrochrome alloys and special steel. Chromium occurs as chromium spinel, a complex mineral with chemical composition of (Fe, Mg) O (Cr, Al, Fe)2 . Chromite ore is exclusively found in ultramafic igneous rocks. Major associated gangue minerals are talc, quartz, serpentine and iron oxides.Chromite is a heavy mineral, with a specific gravity in the range of 4-5, relative to associated gangue minerals in a chromite ore, which makes gravity concentration a suitable process. This is generally true for coarse particles, ranging from 1 mm to 100 mm. Typically, the ore is prepared by crushing (and grinding if necessary) to a suitable size and the material is sized for the appropriate beneficiation techniques. It is common to use heavy medium separation (e.g. dense media drums, dense media cyclones, or Dyna Whirlpool) to treat coarse size and intermediate size particles (1 – 100 mm). Intermediate and fine particles (20 – 0.1 mm) could be treated by jigs. Spirals, shaking table, sluices, and Reichert cones can upgrade fine particles. Figure 1 shows a typical chromite beneficiation process flowsheet. As can be seen, it consists of three major sections: feed preparation (crushing, screening), de-sliming, and concentration. Beneficiation recoveries range from 80 to 85%, although the ratio of upgrading is only 2 to 3."

"The traditional metallurgical scale-up techniques for flotation plants are based on lumped flotation rate constants, dimensionless hydrodynamic numbers and the use of safety factors. Once the plant has been designed, the flotation principles that govern scale-up play almost no role in the optimization of the circuit to meet its metallurgical targets. This deficiency can potentially lead to a plant design incapable of meeting its targets, especially when circuits incorporate large flotation cells. This paper demonstrates the application of the k = PSbRf model in providing a suitable framework for flotation modelling, scale-up and circuit optimization, thus presenting an integrated approach to the problem. Studies were conducted at Teck Cominco’s Red Dog concentrator to characterize cell hydrodynamics, gas dispersion properties, froth flow behaviour, entrainment and ore floatability to obtain the key data necessary to develop a model for the flotation circuit. The findings of these studies are presented in this paper, which provide valuable insights into the modelling and optimization of the Red Dog flotation circuit. IntroductionThe traditional methodology for flotation scale-up and plant design is based on the ruleof- thumb with safety factors and dimensionless hydrodynamic group similitude considerations. With the recent trend toward larger flotation cells with volumes of 150 m3 and greater in concentrators, the problem of scale-up has become even more acute. The scale-up factors that may have been tolerated on smaller cells are not applicable to larger cells. The transportation of froth in these large cells adds further complexity to the problem. Arbiter et al. (1980) foresaw this problem and pointed out that if scale-up were attempted by rule-ofthumb and trial-and-error, the probability of failure would then increase with scale. This problem is confounded by the fact that the design and scale-up considerations used for a new flotation circuit play almost no role in optimization of the circuit to meet its metallurgical target. This results in a plant design, which may be incapable of meeting its metallurgical targets. There have been several instances where new concentrators have required significant circuit modifications and additional capacity to achieve design targets."

That this is possible with hydrogen peroxide is shown by the fact that over twenty gold mines either already use H2O2 or intend to start using it within the next few months. "Drilling and blasting are fundamental operations in the mining cycle and constitute an important component of the mining costs. Problems associated with improper drilling and blasting practices can create losses of several millions of dollars per year. For this reason, a Blasting Technology program was initiated in 1984 at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC). In this paper, advances made at NTC in drill and blast technology are reviewed. Impacts of drilling and basting for Noranda are assessed in terms of dilution and ore losses. Future challenges are addressed. IntroductionUp to 1997, Noranda was a diversified natural resources company that operated in three sectors: mining and metallurgy, forest products, and oil and gas. "Since 1992, the concentration of gold using gravity methods has progressed to become an important part of production at Hemlo Gold's Golden Giant Mine. Currently, the gravity circuit accounts for approximately 25% of the Golden Giant Mine's Gold production. This circuit consists of a 30 inch Center-Drain Knelson Concentrator and a Shaking Table. The evolution of gravity concentration will be discussed with an emphasis on the economic justification for a gravity circuit as well as the practical aspects and metallurgical impact of operating such a circuit. It will be demonstrated that the operation of a gravity circuit has definite benefits to the operation of the Golden Giant Mill and will continue to play an important role in future gold production.1.0 IntroductionHemlo Gold Mines Inc. Golden Giant Mine is a 3000 TPD underground gold mine and milling facility located 40 km east of Marathon, Ontario. Mining is accomplished by means of sublevel longhole open stoping. The ore is processed using conventional crushing, 3-stage ball milling, conventional cyanidation and CIP processes. The mill and concentrator are described in more detail in other publications1,2.Since July of 1992, the Golden Giant Mine has been using a gravity circuit for gold recovery in the mill's grinding circuit. Despite the fact that gold recovery averages over 96% using conventional cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp processes, the gravity circuit has become an integral part of milling operations. This paper will discuss the economic justification for a gravity circuit as well as the practical and metallurgical aspects of its operation."

The Doyon Mine?s Zone 1 (Altered Zone), found along the southern boundary of the mine, encompasses approximately 20% of the mining reserves. The mineralisation is found in a series of steeply dipping narrow veinlets, which are contained in an extremely weak host rock: a sericitic schist with RQD values ranging from 0 to 20. Longhole mining methods are used, with either longitudinal or transverse approaches, depending on the width of the ore zone. Dilution is of critical importance in the mining of this zone, particularly in longitudinal stopes, where dilution levels have averaged 55% since 2000. Major factors influencing dilution in this zone include the stope geometry and standup time. A two-phase approach has been developed to mine and backfill longitudinal stopes: the top of the stope is pastefilled after approximately half of the broken ore has been extracted; the remainder of the ore is extracted once the plug has cured; and the remaining void is filled. This method has been used in six stopes to date, resulting in an average dilution of 17%. This paper details the application of this technique and its effect on dilution.

"The slurry density (pulp percentage of solids) and the size of the grinding media are often used for the optimization of an operating ball mill. In many cases a change of ball size is made at the slurry density used with the original ball size. But is the optimum slurry density changing with grinding media size? Laboratory grinding tests were conducted to answer that question and results indicate that more than likely there is no need to adjust mill slurry density when adjusting the size of a grinding media in a ball mill. Full scale behaviour could be different because slurry density affects the slurry transportation through the mill and the classifier operation.INTRODUCTIONOre preparation begins with a fragmentation step that liberates valuable minerals or exposes mineral surface to the environment. The size reduction step of a mineral processing operation is energy demanding and the optimisation of this process should always be an objective for the plant metallurgists. Various approaches could be considered for improving the operation of a grinding circuit. For a close grinding circuit an adequate tuning of the classifiers operation may lead to substantial savings (McIvor, 1988). Once a grinding mill is in operation, few variables remain to be considered for process optimization. The ball charge is usually maintained to achieve a target power drawn by the grinding mill motor. The rotation speed is seldom considered (McIvor, 1983; Bazin and Lavoie, 2000) as a change of mill speed usually implies a costly pinion change. If the liner and lifter configuration is critical for SAG and AG mills (Latchireddi et al., 2005), few discussions are available for ball mills (Fuerstenau and Abouzeid, 1985; McIvor, 1983). The mill feed size distribution can also be adjusted but this implies changing the upstream processes, which transposes the optimization process to another level. Modification to grinding media shape is a possible avenue (Cooper et al., 1994), but it remains that slurry density and grinding media size are probably the most frequently considered variables for the optimization of a ball mill."

A major aim of the GOLD 2003 conference, is to promote new gold related science and technology with a view to developing new useful industrial applications for gold. Current industrial uses have provided a steady annual industrial demand for gold of around 350-400 tonnes in recent years, the bulk of which is centred on electronics applications, with dental uses constituting the second largest application. However, there is good reason to believe that whilst gold will continue to play a major role in these sectors in the future, substantial growth of demand is not anticipated. Increased industrial demand for gold is only likely to come through the emergence of new applications, probably most significantly in five broad market sectors: ? Pollution and emission control technologies, including fuel cells. ? New uses for gold in advanced electronics, electrical systems and devices. ? Chemical processing of a range of bulk and speciality chemicals, using gold based catalysts ? Advanced coatings exploiting the novel properties of gold, particularly in nanoparticulate form. ? New biomedical uses for gold including medical treatments, drugs, implants, sensors and devices. There is cause for optimism that many new applications for gold could emerge in these sectors over the next decade and that this will lead to a substantial growth in demand for gold. It is clear that many of these new opportunities will be based on a chemical approach to synthesis of useful products rather than what has historically been a materials or mechanical approach. To turn this expectation into reality requires sustained support of R & D and a determination to exploit this new science and technology into viable commercial applications.

"This paper had its origin in a panel discussion organized by the Canadian Uranium Producers Metallurgical Committee (CUPMC) at their Annual Meeting in Blind River in May, 1964. The reason for the panel was the formation of the National Uranium Tailings Research Program funded in the amount of ten million dollars by the Federal government. According to the bureaucrats in charge the program would seek to solve the perceived problems as well as any actual problems they believed existed with uranium tailings. Dr. Allan Ashbrook of Eldorado Nuclear chaired this panel and his summation of the panel's purpose was set out as ""Regulation and the Regulatory Process in the Nuclear Industry, Where Have We Been, Where Are We Now and Where Are We Going""?"" This paper will try to relate these questions to the whole mineral industry.The Canadian Mining Association has been telling us our natural resources are today required only if they are competitively priced with those produced in so called ""third world"" countries where labour rates are lower, environmental restrictions may be less and every effort is made by the local government to sell their product. It is in this hostile economic climate that the Canadian mining industry now finds itself. Before going further I want to stress these comments apply only to: a) Mines financed by private capital in a free enterprise society.b) Mining companies want to operate in an environmentally safe manner. However, they must earn a profit because no company financed with private capital can borrow money ad infinitum.WHERE HAVE WE BEENNone of us today would want to return to the days when the mill waste management system consisted of pumping the tailing to the nearest slope and letting nature's law of gravity do the rest. This was the way it was in early gold mines in Nova Scotia, tin mines in Cornwall, England or silver mines in Cobalt, Ontario and survives today in countries where climate, customs and methods of doing business are far different from Canada. As mill tonnage rates increased, more sophisticated systems evolved often designed for mining areas with different climates. Systems imported from arid climates such as south-west United States retained the solids but allowed bacterial oxidation of the sulphides promoting acid drainage. Environmental regulations were introduced and Canadian mines learned to handle tailings in our climates."

I-Introduction The possibility of adapting low-temperature reduction methods to the treatment of iron ores has been suggested on numerous occasions. Papers published on the subject include, notably, Bulletin 270 of the United States Bureau of Mines on The Production of Sponge Iron, the Symposium of the American Electrochemical Society (1927) on The Gaseous Reduction of Ores and Other Metallic Compounds, and Les Procédés Actuels de Traitement Direct du Minerai de Fer, by A. Mayer (Revue de l&apos;Industrie Minerale, Nov. 15th, 1932) (1). The present paper contains the results of an investigation of the reducibility of some Ontario ores. The concentration of these ores and of the products of reduction has also been investigated.

"Noranda's Brunswick Mining Division, near Bathurst, New Brunswick, processes 10,500 TPD of complex Cu-Pb-Zn bearing ore. Brunswick uses conventional rod and ball milling techniques to achieve a flotation feed size of 75% passing 400 mesh. Over a two year period, testwork was performed using a Marcy pilot plant ball mill to assess the impact of several key variables on secondary grinding efficiency. Four graded mill charges were used to compare balls and slugs at 25 and 29 mm sizes. Data was evaluated by determining grinding rates using a commercially available steady state simulator. Results were critical in Brunswick's efforts to achieve finer grinds while minimizing cost per tonne.IntroductionBackgroundThe Brunswick orebody is an extremely fined grained volcanogenic massive lead, zinc, copper, silver, iron sulphide body between two metamorphosed sedimentary and felsic volcanic rock units. Pyrite content is about 60% with 20% non-sulphide minerals, mainly silica and chlorite.Size reduction at Brunswick is performed by three separate parallel lines consisting of rod mills, primary and secondary ball mill circuits, all in series. The line 3 grinding circuit is presented in Figure 1."

"Batch centrifugal gravity concentrators, which produce very high ratios of concentration, have become common place for recovering free gold within milling circuits. Their effectiveness has proven to be especially useful in recovering finer gold particles. The knowledge related to testing, modeling and scale-up of these systems has been well established over the recent decade mostly due to the efforts of the late Dr. Andre Laplante.Gravity separation technologies such as jigs, spirals and shaking tables can provide the increased mass yields required for minerals that occur at higher concentrations than gold, however their effectiveness tends to diminish at finer particle sizes. The development of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators has provided the opportunity to be able to recover a wide range of minerals at finer particle size classes when compared to the more traditional gravity concentration devices. These concentrators also provide additional benefits such as smaller unit footprint and automated operation.This paper discusses the background, current practices and future applications for high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.INTRODUCTIONGravity concentration, one of the oldest mineral beneficiation processes, has evolved over the decades and continues to play an important role in modern mineral processing operations. The development and growth of froth flotation in the early part of the twentieth century led to a decline in the importance of gravity concentration. However, gravity concentration continued to be used for ores that are difficult to beneficiate using froth flotation; such as tin, tungsten, niobium/tantalum, iron, industrial minerals and oxidized coal. In recent decades, many operations have begun to employ a combination of both gravity concentration and froth flotation Since flotation relies on surface chemistry and gravity concentration relies on specific gravity differences, putting these techniques in series provides today’s metallurgist with unprecedented opportunities to maximize grade and recovery of many of these minerals."

"Biological leaching can be used to enhance the recovery of gold and silver from refractory ores, concentrates and tailings. The method liberates precious metals associated with sulphide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite making them amenable to cyanidation. The chemistry and features of biological preoxidation leaching is discussed. A summary of the results obtained on various ores, concentrates and tailings is presented.INTRODUCTIONRefractory precious metal ores in which gold and silver are finely disseminated in sulphide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite are becoming more important to the mining industry. This is due both to a depletion of simpler, free-milling ores and to a significant increase in the price of gold in recent years. Whereas many ores can be directly cyanided with gold solubilizations over 90% obtained, the refractory ores respond poorly to direct cyanidation and require decomposition of the precious metal-bearing sulphide minerals to increase recoveries.Decomposition of sulphides by oxidation prior to cyanidation can be carried out by several means. The oldest method is roasting which removes unwanted ore constituents by high temperature oxidation and volatilization. In Canada, for example, roasting is used at Giant Yellowknife (Connell and Cross, 1981). Another method gaining increasing acceptance is pressure hydrometallurgy which uses aqueous oxidation conducted at high temperature and pressure. Homestake Mining Company have recently completed construction of a plant incorporating pressure oxidation at their Mclaughlin property in California (Guinivire, 1984)."

This paper summarizes current underhand paste backfill mining as applied to Goldcorp Inc?s Red Lake Mine, Newcrest Mining Ltd?s Kencana Mine and the Lanfranchi Nickel Mine as well as ongoing research at the University of British Columbia?s Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering. The Red Lake Mine utilises a 6 m wide undercut with a 2 MPa unconfined strength paste in order to selectively mine its high grade, high-stress orebody. Kencana?s orebody is located in a poor rock mass environment. An 8 m wide, 2 MPa unconfined strength paste sill allows a safe working condition for its high grade orebody. The Lanfranchi Nickel Mine utilises a cable-supported, 2 MPa paste, with 12 m span sills, to optimize the mining of the squeezing rock mass. This paper details the rock mechanic hazards, ground support techniques, paste practices and unique conditions for each mine. Further, an update of ongoing research at the University of British Columbia, focussing on the optimization of safe mining in underhand cut-and-fill mining in high-stress/weak rock masses, is presented.

"Access to the outside world is supplied by the Alaska Highway to continental Canada and the United States, the Haines Highway, and by the White Pass & Yukon Route to Skagway and Vancouver. Communities and mining developments located along the Alaska Highway are supplied daily by truck transport with commodities originating in Whitehorse, Edmonton, and Vancouver.The average payload on the Alaska and Mayo Highway is in the order of 16 to 25 tons and is subject to government regulations. Highway haulage distances to railhead at Whitehorse vary as does the direction. The Clinton Creek asbestos development is located 395 road miles north-west of Whitehorse whereas the United Keno Hill operation is 287 miles to the north. Cassiar Asbestos is located in Northern British Columbia at a distance of 357 miles south-east of railhead at Whitehorse. In order to service these various mines multipurpose highway vehicles have been designed to allow maximum backhaul of petroleum products. The White Pass & Yukon Route was established as an integrated transportation system from 1955 when it became apparent that three non-integrated systems (ship, rail and truck), with the various paper work and rising costs, could not continue to serve the needs of Yukon. Integration became the company policy and a system was developed. A special container ship (Clifford J. Rogers) was designed and built. This was the first specially built container ship in the world. The northern container integrated system was operational in 1955.In 1965 over 8.5 million dollars were spent in upgrading the container facility and the construction of a tanker-container ship designed specifically to serve Yukon and Northern B.C. "The carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process has been the dominant gold recovery process since the early 1980s. CIP has proven to be very adaptable for a wide range of ores and circuit configurations. The key performance indicator for CIP circuits is the minimisation of soluble gold losses to tailings, however, it is also important to operate the circuit efficiently (maximising gold loadings on carbon and minimising carbon inventory). Over the last 30 years the Curtin Gold Technology Group has studied CIP circuits as part of an on-going collaborative industry funded project (the AMIRA Gold Processing Technology Project). In the early years the project undertook basic research into understanding activated carbon, and its management in the circuit. More recently the development of process models and instrumentation has provided additional tools to assist operators. The results show that while most CIP circuits operate well, there are still significant opportunities for further cost savings, or additional revenue. This paper reviews the observations arising from this work, including key requirements for good carbon management, the results of benchmarking and industry surveys of carbon circuit over 20 years, the value of process modelling of CIP circuits to establish operating parameters, and the use of automated instrumentation to better optimise carbon control in the circuit.INTRODUCTION The introduction of activated carbon to recover gold from cyanide leach solutions in the last quarter of the 20th century was the most significant development in gold ore processing since the advent of cyanidation seventy years before. Replacing the Merrill–Crowe zinc cementation step with carbon-in-pulp (CIP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits provided a process that allowed the treatment of lower grade and problematic ores (e.g. high-clay ores), at lower capital and operating costs, and higher metal recoveries. The CIP circuit was first developed in the 1950s at the Carlton Mill, Cripple Creek, Colorado. All the components of the modern CIP process came to fruition at the Homestake Mine in South Dakota in 1973 (Fast, 1988). From the late 1970s onward a variation of CIP, carbon-in-leach (CIL) which combined the leach and adsorption stages, became the preferred circuit design in most parts of the word."
