"This paper summarizes research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns (froth structure and colour) from industrial flotation froths is discussed.First, the froth was analysed by the use of the Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was applied to develop the empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using one industrial case study.Second, the froth was also analysed by Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Wavelet Transform Analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths.Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses a reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained with the implemented control strategy are highlighted.Finally, the feasibility to implement a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe development of control strategies to achieve satisfactory control performance has always been a great challenge for engineers and the need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimization has become more and more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decades. That is why new process variables need to be measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This industrial process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and/or chemical ore characteristics and also, due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures. A flotation circuit scheme is always a complex network of more than two dozens slurry streams. Information about those streams (% solid, metal content analysis and flow rates) is important for process diagnosis performance evaluation and control. "Abstract - A heavy mineral survey of beach and dune sands including geochemical analysis for trace elements was undertaken to evaluate the economic potential of the sands and to understand the nature and distribution of the heavy minerals relative to potential source rocks. Results indicate that heavy minerals are generally derived from outcropping volcanic rocks that comprise a proportion of the hinterland in the south part of our survey area. The most abundant minerals are magnetite and pyroxene. The morphologies of the heavy mineral grains are angular to subangular, suggesting that they were transported short distances from the source rocks. Factors controlling heavy mineral distributions include wave and wind action, proximity to provenance, the fluvial drainage network, and longshore currrents.The most economically important mineral is ilmenite. Zircon and rutile concentrations are relatively minor and thus have lower economic potential."

"The Key Lake mill was commissioned in 1983 to process the two Key Lake ore deposits. With the depletion of these ore bodies in 1999, the plant was converted to mill the exceptionally rich McArthur River deposit located seventy eight kilometers northeast of the Key Lake mine site. This paper describes in detail the Key Lake milling process. The mill consists of a grinding circuit, a leachkounter current decantation circuit, a solvent extraction circuit, a yellowcake precipitatiodcalciner circuit, an ammonium sulphate crystallization circuit, and a waste treatment circuit. The paper also describes process changes to handle McArthur River ore, including the ore receiving stationLOCATIONThe Key Lake mill is located 78 kilometres south of the McArthur River mine. It is located at latitude 57' N in northern Saskatchewan, within the southern boundary of the Athabasca formation. The nearest town is Pine House, located 240 kilometres to the south. Access to the mine is by an all weather road and by a private airstrip.HISTORYAND DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONThe Key Lake mill was commissioned in October 1983 to process ore from the Gaertner and Deilmann ore bodies. The mill was designed to produce twelve million pounds of uranium oxide (U308) a year from a feed grade of 2.4% U3O8.Following grinding, the uranium is leached in a two stage leach circuit using oxygen and sulphuric acid. An eight-thickener counter current decantation (CCD) circuit is used to separate the uranium bearing solution from the solid waste residue. The uranium is further purified in a solvent extraction circuit and then precipitated using ammonia. It is then calcined at 840' Celsius, and packaged into drums for shipping to refineries. There is a crystallization circuit to recover ammonium sulphate produced in the process and a waste treatment circuit."

"The Kidd Creek concentrator is looking actively for alternative technology as means of reducing operating costs in their concentrate handling section. The use of pressure and vacuum filters to eliminate the multiple hearth dryers would have the most beneficial effect. The dryers which constitute the greater portion of concentrate drying costs consume about 35,000 m3 per day of natural gas.After the evaluation of various filters by Kidd's technology group, it was clear that, because of the low final moisture requirements of 5.5 to 6% H20, few filters were able to achieve this target economically. Lately attention has focused on the Andritz hyperbaric filter. Testwork has shown that target moistures can be achieved with an appreciable reduction in operating cost.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe Kidd Creek Concentrator is located 28 kilometers east of Timmins, Ontario. The ore is hauled by the Kidd Creek Railroad to the concentrator where it is milled to produce separate copper and zinc concentrates.Projected concentrator feed for 1991 is 3,750,000 tonnes of ore grading 3.3 % Cu and 4.7 % Zn. The concentrate production is expected to be 458,080 dry tonnes of copper concentrate at a grade of 25.7 % Cu and 265,020 dry tonnes of zinc concentrate at a grade of 54 % Zn.Currently, there is active investigation toward cost reduction through implementation of new technologies. One area which has been extensively evaluated is the concentrate dewatering and drying section. In that section, the multiple hearth concentrate dryers represent the largest source of operating costs, mainly through maintenance and energy costs (electricity and natural gas). The replacement of these dryers with filtration technology that could produce the required concentrate dryness would represent substantial savings.In September of 1990 filtration testwork carried out by Andritz Ruthner showed that Kidd Creek copper and zinc concentrates could be filtered to below 6 and 8 % moisture respectively. In late May 1991 the laboratory testwork was duplicated on siteand one month later a 5 m2 pilot filter was tested on site. Based on the pilot test results, an economic evaluation was performed. It indicated that a reasonable payback could be realized if hyperbaric filters were to replace the existing concentrate drying section."

"Acid regeneration is a very important process step in each acid leach circuit. It is required to recover dissolved metals and HCl from spent leaching acid. Andritz Metals presents its recently commissioned spray roast pilot plant. The facility is now available for testing and demonstrating acid recovery or metal oxide production which is a requirement in several flow sheets under development for the mining and specialized oxides industries. Results from pilot test campaigns are reported here. We are currently focusing on a nickel ore leaching process, which requires both a feasible iron control and acid regeneration step. In addition, we disclose the results of a magnesium ore and aluminium recycling test campaign conducted in our pilot plant facility.INTRODUCTION Hydrochloric acid regeneration is widely used in the steel industry to regenerate spent pickle liquors into hydrochloric acid at a typical concentration of 18 wt.%. Andritz Metals (formerly known as Ruthner) has built more than 200 acid regeneration plants worldwide (Andritz Metals brochure). As technology leaders Andritz also has vast experience with specialty metal oxide plants, producing metal oxides such as aluminium oxide (Al2O3), magnesium oxide (MgO), nickel oxide (NiO), cobalt oxide (Co3O4) and mixed oxides from metal chloride solutions (Baerhold F., Lebl A., Starcevic J., 2006), (Jedlicka, H., n.d.), (Ruthner M.J., Krischner H., 1973), (Ruthner Ind. Planungs AG, 1967). Hydrochloric acid leach circuits have been developed and proven in the industry for many years. Examples of industrial applications are: synthetic rutile production (TiO2) (Walpole E.A., Winter J.D., 2002), Quebec Iron and Titanium’s UGS process (Patoine M.-C., De Mori A., Borowiec K., Coscia C., 2002), magnesium and potassium production (Priemer H., 1973) and Goro Nickel (Vahed A., Colton D.F., Duterque J.P., Karner W., Baerhold F., 2004), (Taylor A., 2013). One of the critical process steps in developing a hydrometallurgical process is acid regeneration, as it is an economic requirement to recover both the dissolved metals and acid (commonly HCl) from the spent leaching solution."

"The mineral potential of the Nanisivik area was discovered as far back as 1910 when a prospector of the Geological Survey of Canada, on an expedition under Captain J. G.Bernier, recorded a deposit of pyrite with minor sphalerite and galena. An outcrop of the present orebody was discovered by Texas Gulf Company in 1957. Subsequent drilling outlined the orebody consisting of 6,000,000 tonnes of ore containing 13 % Zinc and 1.5 % Lead. The orebody appears to have been formed by the filling of a limestone cavern with sulphides. The sulphide minerals consist of pyrite, sphalerite and galena. The limestone bedrock is mostly dolomite with some calcite and magnesite. A cutoff grade of about 6% Zinc has been calculated.In 1972 Mineral Resources International Limited took an option on the property. Upon completion of the feasibility study by Watts, Griffiths and McOuat, the then new independent project management group of Strathcona Mineral Services Ltd. were engaged to develop the project through the financing, construction and operating phases. Strathcona Mineral Services still manage the project from their head office in Toronto and through the Mine Manager and Department Superintendents at the Mine site. The interest for the project is presently split five ways: Mineral Resources International Ltd. 53.5 %, Government of Canada 18 %, Metallgesellschaft A.G. of Germany 11.25 %, Billiton B. V. of Holland 11.25 % and Texas Gulf Co. 6 %."

"In Turkey, the growing demand for lignite has resulted in increased lignite production and an emphasis on improving underground recovery. This has resulted in a gradual increase in the application of the retreat longwall mining method and also in the extraction of the safety pillars protecting permanent underground structures (drifts, shafts) in mines prior to their abandonment.Extracting these safety pillars presents a special hazard to mine employees and the stability of the mine. Often subjected to high stresses, the behaviour of these pillars is not always predictable. Special care must be taken to ensure that infrastructure does not collapse prematurely, and that working conditions remain safe. Otherwise the extraction must be halted, and the remaining coal lost.This investigation reports on a study of the stability of safety pillars during the final extraction phase of the Hustas mine in Soma, Turkey.” The model construction was based on mine plans, and material properties were derived from physical properties testing. Observed subsidence effects from other mining events were used to calibrate the overburden lamination thickness.The model results compared well with surface physical disturbance occurring as a result of mining, as well as with conventional longwall stress redistribution theory and underground observations. The study has shown that properly calibrated models can be useful in assessing mine safety during remnant pillar extraction. The LAMODEL results demonstrate the convenience of this easy to use software."

"A new mineral sands operation is being developed in Georgia by Southern Ionics, Inc. (SII). Prevailing mineralogy and certain design constraints required detailed testing and circuit analysis to create a robust separation processes. The floating wet concentrator plant (WCP) and mineral separation plant (MSP) flow sheets were designed based on historical testing information and recent SII test campaigns on various composite feed samples. The flow sheets were finalized through rigorous process and orebody sequence modeling.The process uses traditional physical separation equipment; however a new MT spiral, the MG12, was selected for use on board the WCP for roughing duty. The MG12 spiral is a two-stage, twelve-turn spiral that has been proven to achieve very high recoveries of heavy minerals. The floating plant includes feed desliming operations, a central MT surge bin for optimum spiral circuit feed control and ancillary operations for concentrate and tailings handling. Scrubbed heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) is then transported to the MSP for concentration of the titanium and zirconium bearing mineral fractions.The testing, flowsheet development, and plant design will be described and explained, and a brief summary of the current project status will be given.IntroductionSouthern Ionics Inc. "Mount Milligan mine is located in northern British Columbia. The concentrator employs conventional SABC grinding circuit with bulk sulphide flotation processes. Commissioning started in September of 2013 and nameplate production of 60,000 TPD was reached in the fourth quarter of 2015. As is typical with many mill ramp ups, bottlenecks developed as throughput increased. Since then, plant modifications and new control philosophies in the comminution and flotation circuits have been implemented and evaluated. The mine-to-mill collaboration played a key role in reaching target throughput rates by improving blast fragmentation and implementing temporary pre-crushing. Results of the projects as well as ongoing challenges/bottlenecks and solutions will be discussed.IntroductionMount Milligan Mine is a copper-gold producer located approximately 253 km northwest of Prince George in British Columbia. Production commenced in September 2013 and reached nameplate capacity of 60,000 TPD in December 2015. Average head grades for the mine life average 0.18% Cu and 0.39 g/t Au.Circuit DesignOriginal process design began with run-of-mine ore from the pit crushed through a 60-110 gyratory crusher, conveyed to a live ore stockpile and fed to the mill via four variable apron feeders. The concentrator circuit employs SAG mill - Ball mill - Pebble Crusher (SABC) grinding configuration to grind the ore down to a target P80 of ~200µm. It is then fed to two parallel trains of flotation tanks, each consisting of five 200 m3 tank cells with the first two being roughers and last three being scavengers. Concentrate streams from roughers and scavengers are separately reground with a closed circuit Tower mill and two open circuit ISA mills operating in parallel, respectively.Three stages of cleaners upgrade roughers/scavenger products to 25% Cu followed by a cleaner scavenger stage. The final concentrate is then thickened and filtered to approximately 9% moisture and shipped off site (Figure 1)."

Gold catalysts were prepared on co-precipitated, calcined copper oxide - zinc oxide support by an inverse deposition-precipitation method. These catalysts were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) and studied for CO oxidation activity at various catalyst calcination temperatures. TPR studies of the support material exhibited a double peak and shift to lower temperatures for the reduction of Cux+ to metallic copper, as opposed to the single reduction peak for pure CuO. This phenomenon is possibly caused by an interaction with the zinc oxide. The addition of gold to the support CuOZnO led to a further shift in copper reducibility to lower temperatures. Gold present in the initial uncalcined catalyst as Au3+ was auto-reduced to Au0 under various calcination temperatures. The Au3+ reduction peak was observed to shift to lower temperatures with increasing calcination temperature. The catalytic activity was found to pass through a minimum value with respect to calcination temperature. Catalysts with both gold in entirely the 3+ or metallic oxidation state were found to exhibit high activity. Furthermore, the catalysts were found to decrease in activity with decreasing Au3+ content up to an intermediate calcination temperature, afterwhich the activity increased sharply. Possibly at higher temperatures, a stronger Au-support interaction is formed, leading to a new active site.

Petrographic studies, assay records, and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of major sulfides suggest nearly all of the gold at the Ernest Henry Cu-Au deposit occurs in the form of native gold or electrum (95-65 wt.% Au); sylvanite and dissolved gold in cobaltite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite make only minor contributions. LA-ICP-MS analyses of the gold contents of chalcopyrite gave from 8 to 139 ppb (mean = 56 ppb), more than an order of magnitude lower than those experimentally determined in chalcopyrite in equilibrium with native gold at the estimated mineralization temperatures (350°-450°C). Gold content is more variable in pyrite (1-400 ppb, mean = 77 ppb) and highest in narrow growth zones of a subordinate type of complexly zoned pyrite wherein it is associated with elevated As, Ag, Sn, Sb, Te, and Bi. Deposition of gold-electrum was closely associated with, but preceded some of the chalcopyrite deposition, as indicated by microtextures and lower bulk Au:Cu ratios in late-stage chalcopyrite-rich veins. Gold grains have maximum dimensions from <1 to 50 micrometers, and are heterogeneously distributed with most occurring in microscale clusters. Fifty-five out of 76 grains recorded in polished sections are in contact with both chalcopyrite and pyrite, and many of the rest are in sites where such a relationship could exist in the third dimension. The dominant textural sites are intergrowths with chalcopyrite in microveinlets cutting pyrite, and on faces of pyrite grains in contact with chalcopyrite. Scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and proton induced X-ray emission studies show that pyrite associated with gold includes complexly zoned, weakly zoned, arsenian, and arsenic-poor types. The textures are compatible with the possibility that most gold was deposited electrochemically as native metal on pyrite surfaces. The textural distribution of gold has important metallurgical implications given that the ore processing circuits at Ernest Henry and most other sulfide copper mines are designed to exclude pyrite (and arsenic) from concentrates.

"Since it started production in 1970, Anderson Lake Mine has experienced several radical changes in mining methods as a result of the physical characteristics of the ore zone along with the need for improved productivity. This paper examines the transition from longhole open stoping to mechanized cut-and fill then to vertical crater retreat at Anderson Lake Mine. The reasons for the need to change mining methods is analyzed taking into consideration the impact of such criteria as improved productivity and ground conditions and how these criteria affected the over-all economic viability of the mine. IntroductionAnderson Lake Mine is one of five producing copper mines in the Snow Lake area and is situated approximately 3 km southeast of the townsite of Snow Lake (Fig. I).The mine production rate at Anderson Lake is 700 tpd and all ore is trucked from the mine to the mill located approximately 2.5 km from the mine site . The mine is serviced by a three-compartment shaft sunk to a depth of 3300 ft with level spacings at 175 ft and 150 ft intervals from the 600 ft level to the 3000 ft level. .The shaft was collared in 1965 and, a year later, the hoist and compressors were installed. By 1969, a crusher system had been built and actual production began in 1970. During 1978, production was suspended for the year to allow for 430 ft of shaft deepening."

"The data acquisition from industrial plants is a fundamental step for process modelling in process optimization, process analysis and automatic control.The introduction, some years ago, of modern distributed control and data acquisition systems in concentrators imposes a new approach in designing experimental schemes for data acquisition campaigns and new criteria for the treatment of the obtained discrete information.This paper presents the methodology applied to sample a zinc flotation circuit at Les Mines Selbaie, Joutel, PQ. Values of 85 process variables were obtained form the Distributed Control and Data Acquisition System (Bailey Network 90) and transferred to the DOS environment. Another 11 variables (flowrates and valve positions) were directly sampled using an IBM-PC compatible computer equipped with a data acquisition card and a signal processing circuit.All variables, under the vector form, were processed in the PC-MATLAB environment to either filter or eliminate the non-linear disturbances and noises, producing useful data for model development. The filtering algorithms are also presented.INTRODUCTIONProcess control does not need to be justified. Whether manual or automatic, any processing plant requires some form of control to accomplish its main objectives: a good quality product and a target throughput. Process control of mineral processing plants has steadily evolved from manual control, where the operator skills and/or experience play an important role, to some level of automatic control, usually considered better, as less human subjectivity is involved, at least when actions have to be taken.The design of these control systems requires the knowledge of the dynamics of the process it is deemed to control. Process modelling is therefore an essential step in the assessment and the design of a control strategy. The choice of model will depend on the available resources and manpower."

"Certain mining methods (eg. Cut-and-fill) result in the contamination of run-of-mine ore with shotcrete. This shotcrete remains mixed with the ore throughout processing. Experimentation performed by Falconbridge Limited revealed that underground contamination of ore by shotcrete (eg. as little as 1% by weight) has led to ill-effects on the nickel recoveries from the flotation process in the mill. The nickel recoveries of contaminated samples were lower than tests without the shotcrete Contamination.To optimize flotation circuits it is important to know why the contamination has created these effects and also to find a method to abate or remove them. Laboratory testing showed that the age of the shotcrete was a factor in it’s effect on nickel recoveries. Younger aged shotcrete gave nickel recoveries lower than baseline nickel recoveries with no contamination. Older shotcrete gave nickel recoveries similar to the baseline.Literature on other cementitious material contaminations on ore revealed that a possible means of remediating this problem is the use of acid in the flotation. The initial pH in the flotation pulp was designed to be pH 9.2, but with the young shotcrete contamination the pH was in the neighbourhood of 10.5. Acid addition may act as a means of lowering the pH to the optimal operational value. Laboratory test work showed that acid addition brought nickel recoveries closer to the baseline."

"The Mount Polley copper/gold project is located in central British Columbia and is currently being developed by Imperial Metals Corporation. Extensive laboratory and pilot plant testing was required to develop acceptable metallurgy for recovery of both sulphide and oxide copper-gold mineralization. Copper recovery is highly sensitive to oxide copper content of the feed whereas gold is primarily associated with the copper sulphide minerals. A conventional flowsheet where sulphide flotation is followed by sulphidization and oxide scavenging is described. The conventional flowsheet was used in a feasibility study which resulted in a favourable production decision at Mount Polley. Detailed engineering and permitting are in progress.More recently, laboratory and pilot testing of a new flotation reagent, S-6493*, an oxide specific collector, has indicated that improved copper recovery can be accomplished with reduced reagent consumption, including elimination of the sulphidization step, using S-6493 compared with the conventional flowsheet. The comparative metallurgical results using S-6493 and conventional sulphidization methods are presented, from both bench scale and pilot testing. Comparative economics of the conventional flowsheet and that using S-6493 are also presented. Advantages of S-6493 include reduced reagent costs, increased revenues from additional copper recovery, and overall reduction in capital and plant operating costs due to the simplified flowsheet. INTRODUCDONThe Mount Polley copper/gold property is located in Central British Columbia, 56 air kilometres northeast of Williams Lake. The first recorded exploration was in 1964. By 1989, a total of 238 diamond drill holes, totalling 27, 522 meters, was completed to detail reserves on the Mount Polley prospect. A number of drill core composites were submitted, containing a variety of oxide copper levels, for metallurgical flowsheet development. Six bulk samples were collected from surface trenches for additional bench scale testing and for pilot plant testing."

"A unique deposit of barite exists near Brookfield, Nova Scotia. The crystals are extremely fine and the whole deposit virtually free of heavy metals. The deposit size was not large enough for conventional uses, such as the production of barium carbonate and drilling mud. In an effort to obtain maximum utilization, a program was begun to determine if U.S.P.-grade pharmaceutical barium sulphate for X-ray diagnosis could be produced. Early work was sufficiently encouraging to institute a development program under the federal Program for Advancement of Industrial Technology. This has been very successfully completed. Canadian and U.S. process patents have been issued, clinical trials have been successful, a production plant has been designed and the plant’s production sold. The processing plant will include magnetic separation for the removal of iron minerals, fine grinding by paddle milling to minus one micron and acid leaching. The process is unique in that at no time is the barium taken into solution.Information is given on the deposit, process, markets, use, plant capital and operating costs, and projected profits. The initial production plant will have an annual capacity of 2,000 tons per year of end product. Capital cost is $850,000 and annual turnover more than $1.5 million. As this capacity only represents approximately 15% of the North American market, rapid plant expansion is foreseen."

"Louvicourt mine began operation in 1994. It is located in northwestern Quebec, 20 km east of Val d’Or. The mine is owned by Aur Resources (30%), which operates the mine, Teck/Cominco (25%) and Novicourt (45%). By the end of 2002 there were approximately 280 employees working on the site, including contractors. Production averages 4300 tons per day, working a massive sulphide body located between 415 m and 920 m underground.Maintenance expenses represent 27% to 29% of the operating costs, and the maintenance personnel represents 34% of the total workforce (including electrical, mechanical and concentrator maintenance staff). Considering these figures, in addition to capital costs and indirect costs, such as energy (electricity, fuel, gas, etc.), it is worthwhile to pay attention to how things are done in order to protect such investment. Every task performed to help understand the impact of Louvicourt’s practices must to be seen as an investment in the reliability of its operation."

Information and communication technology (ICT) is seen as a key source of future productivity improvements in mines. The information technology infrastructure (ITI) necessary to achieve these productivity improvements will come in the form of data integrated from multiple source systems throughout the mining value chain. Two pure approaches are available: supplier-controlled or operations controlled data structures; each strategy has its own advantages and disadvantages. Case studies involving the South African mining industry are used to demonstrate the advantages of using hybrid-controlled data structures. Depending on the level of operational control, new skills are also necessary to be learnt by mining professionals including: information engineering; creating consistent and quality data; and process improvement techniques that use the integrated data for improving the operation.
