The steel industry is producing about 5% of the world wide CO2 emission. Therefore the European steel industry has defined a research program to reduce the CO2 emission by 50% per ton: ULCOS. Since its start in 2004 ULCOS has identified four technologies for further development. Two of these technologies which produce liquid hot metal are discussed. The ULCOS blast furnace is based on recycling of decarbonated topgas and the capture and storage of CO2. The concept has been demonstrated during three campaigns at LKAB EBF in Luleå, Sweden. The smelting reduction process HIsarna is a combination of the cyclone-technology and Hismelt. The process has been demonstrated successfully in four campaigns at a pilot installation on the IJmuiden steelmaking site.

"The paper begins with a brief summary of Professor Müller’s formation of the ISRM and the contents of the previous six Müller lectures with their emphases on rock fractures. The geological origin of fractures is described via a deformational spectrum diagram and a matrix characterising the consequences of a sequence of superimposed deformational events. The different fracture frequencies encountered along lines in all directions through a fractured rock mass are explained. The value of computer modelling and simulation is demonstrated through an example of the effects of fracture zones on the distribution of the in situ stress field. The need to establish the validity of computer programs, i.e., that the modelling/simulation, does actually represent the rock reality, is discussed with reference to the work of the DECOVALEX project. Finally, examples are given of the effects of rock fractures on engineering design and construction, from pre-split blasting to caverns.INTRODUCTIONIt is a great honour to have been chosen as the recipient of the ISRM 7th Müller Award and I am grateful to the representatives of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) National Groups who voted for me. In addition, I am especially pleased because my working life in rock mechanics and rock engineering has been devoted to understanding the geometry and mechanical properties of rock fractures and rock masses—which were the key subjects that Professor Müller promoted. In the ISRM 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book, Hudson and Lamas (2012), Professor Charles Fairhurst notes that on 24 May 1962, i.e., the day before the constitutional meeting of the ISRM took place in Salzburg, a reporter asked Professor Müller, “Do we know the strength of rock?”, to which Professor Müller replied, “For rock tested in the laboratory, yes. For a rock mass, no. This is what we need to determine. This is why we need an International Society for Rock Mechanics”. Also, in his Opening Address at the 1st ISRM Congress in Lisbon, Professor Müller, as the then ISRM President stated,“Many experts agree with me that discontinuity and anisotropy are the most characteristic properties of the material rock and that the properties of jointed media depend much more upon the fabrics bond of the unit rock block system than upon the rock material. Therefore any theoretical investigation of that material has to go its own ways, in the same way as the construction material of soils years ago suggested to soil mechanics its own methods, which differ greatly from the way of thinking of technical mechanics”."

As the amount of construction information used in the growing construction field increases, the importance of efficient construction field management has been growing. Therefore, construction industry have been tried to introduce and conjugate various software and IT technology such as PMIS, Web Camera, RFID, GPS, PDA. However, existing IT technology especially PMIS have not been performed systematically because of difficulty of real time information collection and decision-making from the insufficient handy equipment. These problems make construction manager cannot efficiently respond to diverse condition occur in construction sites. In addition, after the completion, individual who use PMIS have to move another site and use another system so than cannot use information from previous sites. On the other hand, development of IT technology transmute PDA phone for text-based work like schedule management, internet research to smart phone for network based multimedia service. In other words, smart phone is not just IT equipment but new way for overall industry and it can satisfy the demand IT technology on construction sites. Therefore, the purpose of this study is introduce mobile based individual unit PMIS system using cloud computing and SNS which is in development progress. It is expected to be possible to collect and record the real-time information that occur at the site and make rapid decisions based on the recorded information, by converting the office works that are managed based on the site PC or Web, if the site management system that is based on the smart phones and Cloud computing that will be constructed through this research are utilized. After this study, it is necessary to research about interwork with project unit PMIS system and test on real construction site.

The Ni-rich Epidote Zone of the Fraser Mine at Sudbury is characterized by alteration assemblages rich in epidote, actinolite and magnetite which are roughly concentrically zoned and up to hundreds of meters in length. These zones form discrete areas within the igneous Footwall Breccia below the Sudbury Igneous Complex. The assemblages grade from epidotized Footwall Breccia matrix,through actinolite-bearing rocks with few vestiges of original Footwall Breccia textures, into the most intensely altered rock, a magnetite-rich facies. Pentlandite, pyrrhotite and pyrite are the dominant sulfdeminerals; chalcopyrite is minor. The strongest geochemical differences compared to original Footwall Breccia occur where epidote and actinolite dominate the alteration assemblage (EPDZact facies). The most intense alteration facies are typifed by low Cu/(Cu+Ni) values of <0.1. Strong positive correlations exist between Ni and Co, Cu and Au, and among Ir, Os, Ru and Rh. Chondrite-normalized Ni - PGE -Au - Cu plots display an overall increase in all elements from the least to the most intensely altered facies except for Au and Cu. As the proportion of actinolite increases in the EPDZact facies, the chondrite-normalized profles fatten considerably due to low Au and Cu contents. Abundances of Ni, Ir, Ru and Rhalmost ubiquitously increase with degree of alteration. In contrast, Cu, Zn, Ag and Au contents are low in almost all facies. It is suggested that saline hydrothermal fluids moved through the Epidote Zone formation and became more oxidized as they reacted with the Footwall Breccia and with footwall units, including ultramafic rocks. As this trend continued, magnetite-rich zones eventually developed. The occurrence of calcite locally in these magnetite-rich zones suggests that the pH of the fluid increased, causing Cu solubility to drop as activity in the hydrothermal system waned. Sudden changes in fluid composition such as this may have been due to an influx of fluid from bounding ultramafic rocks. Hydrothermal activity was focused along the margins of footwall ultramafic units. Individual hydrother-mal cells may have formed in the Footwall Breccia along pre-existing structures or sulfde concentrations. Metals may have been scavenged from sulfide-bearing Footwall Breccia and possibly Sublayer rocks. Nickel and some PGE were deposited in the Epidote Zone, whereas Cu, Au and Ag continued out-ward into the footwall where they were deposited as Cu-rich footwall veins. "This paper provides a bird&apos;s eye view of the pattern of gold discoveries since 1823, the year of Canada&apos;s first gold find, up to 1983. Within this 160-year period, more gold was discovered in Canada during the last ten-year period (1973-1982) than during any previous decade. The record suggests that the potential for further major gold discoveries is high, which bodes welt f or the future of Canadian gold mining.IntroductionCanada has an impressive history as a gold producer. Since 1921 we have occupied second or third place among the world &apos;s gold producing nations, after South Africa and most of the time the U.S.S.R. Canadian gold production over the last hundred years has added up to some 6 per cent of all-time world production.The sharp rise in the price of gold in the 1970s led to a surge of gold exploration, which in turn resulted in the discovery of significant quantities of gold in Canada. How do these recent discoveries rate in comparison with those of the more distant past? For example, are the quantities of gold in notable discoveries of recent year s, such as Hemlo and Detour, in the same league with the amounts of gold discovered around 1910 in the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake district s of Ontario? Can the combined gold content of the recent discoveries be likened to that o f the almost 40 major Canadian gold deposits, along with numerous smaller ones, discovered in Canada during the 1920s and 1930s? What are the implications of the more recent gold discovery record for future rate s of gold discovery in Canada?This paper attempts to glean answers to such questions from an overview of the period that begins in 1823, the year of Canada&apos;s first gold discovery. Gold deposits come in two major types: placer deposits and lode deposits in solid rock . Placer gold is distributed in sand and gravel. Gold in solid rock occur s mostly in gold ore filling fissures."

"The Quintette Coal Limited property is located in the northeast coal area of British Columbia.A basic agreement with the Japanese steel industry was executed on January 27, 1981 for the sale of 69.5 million tonnes of Quintette metallurgical coal over a 14.5-year period. This contract period can be extended by five years by mutual agreement. Sale agreements have also been signed for the sale of 19.4 million tonnes of oxidized coal over a 15-year period.Work started on site development in the late summer of 1981, and at present, two of the four eventual pits-the McConkey and Frame-are under development.The pits are currently in a prestripping phase. These pits are notable for the stripping volumes that have to be removed from relatively small pit areas. In order to provide for the required detailed rapid short-range planning of these pits, engineering will be computerized, as will the truck dispatch system.The mining area lies 21.1 km from the plant site by road and the transport of raw coal to the plant is by means of a high-speed conveyor system which has a total length of 13.4 km with a vertical drop of 740 m.The surface plant facility was designed on a modularized basis to facilitate maintenance, and is designed to enable the use of gravity f low of raw coal and heavy media in the plant to minimize the use of pumps.The construction of the plant and mine site facilities is ongoing, and the first coal production is scheduled for early December 1983.IntroductionQuintett e Coal Limited is a Canadian company incorporated in the province of British Columbia in 1971. "IntroductionIn 1879, when the Dominion government initiated its controversial program of industrial promotion, iron smelting in Canada was limited to one company producing coke iron on the mainland of Nov a Scotia and three small charcoal blast furnaces in Quebec. There was no steel production. By the eve of the first great war, iron and steel were being produced in very large quantities, the companies active in 1879 had disappeared and new centres of integrated iron and rolled steel production at Hamilton, Sydney and Sault Ste. Marie had come to resemble the industry as we know it today.The most dramatic change was that at Sydney, Nova Scotia, where in the early 1900s, two steelmaking companies established works. The Sydney developments have been explained as the result of resource discovery and technical change. W.J. Donald, in his authoritative account of the Canadian iron and steel industry, observes:""The most rapid growth of the Canadian iron and steel industry has occured since 1897... The remarkable growth has been caused largely by the new conditions of the industry. The discovery and use of Newfoundland ores, together with the availability of Cape Breton coal, has made the Nova Scotia industry not only possible but profitable ... It is a safe conclusion that the Canadian industry would not have been an important one, had it not been for the discovery of the Michipicoten and especially the Wabana (Newfoundland) ores""Donald also argues that metallurgical progress had been necessary to render the ores valuable,""Newfoundland ores ... contain a considerable amount of phosphorus, and were made available for steel-making by recent inventions.""The purpose of this paper is to re-examine Donald&apos;s story. It will be argued that the origin of steel -making at Sydney is somewhat more complicated than Donald has indicated. The difficulty with Newfoundland ore extended beyond its phosphorus content and a resolution required more than the basic open hearth furnace identified by Donald. Moreover metallurgical change was only one of several developments necessary to induce industrial investment at Sydney. Surprisingly, however, the discovery of iron ore in the late nineteenth century does not appear to be part of the explanation."

"A precise analysis of the noise emitted by an aluminum plant has shown that one of the main sources of noise is the noise emitted by an exhaust stack 40 m high and 1.8 m diametre, emitting a pure tone at 320 Hz. Because a classical cost effective solution is not available for this source, active noise control (ANC) solution was investigated.Commonly available ANC systems, how-ever, are not applicable to the chimney considered because the diameter of the stack (f) is too important compared to the wave length(?)of the frequency to control. In fact, until now, active noise control (ANC) has been successfully used to reduce the acoustical energy emitted at the end of ducts in the case of plane wave propagation, i.e. ?/f< 1.7 [1,4].When f> ?/1.7, high order modes propagate in the duct and a single canal active noise control system is not sufficient.This paper presents an ANC system developed to control higher modes in a circular duct. The controller used is based on a multiple-input, multiple-output adaptive filtered X-LMS and allows up to 11 error micro-phones and controls sources. The system has been used in a laboratory on a finite duct of3.5 m long and 0.30 m diameter which corresponds to the same ratio ?/f for the real stack. The efficiency of the system with different numbers and location of control sources and errors sensors has been analyzed. Noise reduction of 15 dB(A) could be obtained with some configurations. Actually, the system is being considered for installation on the real chimney stack."

Climate change is a subject of growing concern. Based on the International Energy Agency, about 19% of man made greenhouse gas emissions globally are generated by the transport sector. This paper will focus on the environmental aspects of the light-weighting in transport and the resulting savings of fuel and electricity. Aluminium is an option for lightweight applications in transport, with very high benefits not only in the use stage, but also in the stage of vehicle recycling. Life cycle assessment is used to quantify the relative benefits of light-weighting specific components of cars, commercial road vehicles, buses, ships and trains. A vehicle consists of many components, which are produced by different processes and undergo different types of end-of-life operations. This document does not intend to compare a generic aluminium vehicle with a generic "heavy materials" vehicle. It rather tries to use a pragmatic approach based on specific examples of components where aluminium is used and can be used in the design of new vehicles, also taking into account future developments. The case studies in this paper are based on real cases where aluminium was used. For each component, sensitivity analyses are applied to see the impact of specific parameters such as the end-of-life recycling rate and the use stage driving distance. Significant greenhouse gas savings by the use of aluminium are demonstrated for cars and even higher ones for trucks, buses, trains and ships. In addition, the total potential benefits of light-weighting with aluminium are shown on the global level.

Ever increasing depth of mineral extraction presents a challenging environment for hard rock underground mines. High in-situ stresses and associated seismicity with potential rockburst hazards are the major decisive factors contributing to the choice of a ground support regime. Conventional ground support systems, designed primarily for static loads, are not always capable of providing safe working conditions for underground personnel in seismically active mines. Systems specifically developed to resist dynamic loading and allowing for larger deformations are therefore preferred alternatives. High-tensile chain-link mesh has a proven record of successful use in open cut operations in various rockfall barrier installations due to its high energy absorption capacity. It has also been used in underground operations in various parts of the world. This paper describes a method of mechanized installation of a chain-link mesh evaluated at the Kiruna mine in Sweden and South Deep Mine in South Africa. A purpose-built mechanized roll mesh handler was used in this evaluation. The handler is compatible with all standard multi-boom underground drill rigs and is operated utilizing the hydraulic circuit normally used for the feed arrangement. A number of key performance indicators have been identified as success criteria: ??A 30-50% faster installation compared to the conventional methodology ??The mesh should sustain any blast damage when applied to the blasting face ??No unraveling of the mesh when cut ??No failure of mesh under normal conditions Although the energy-absorbing mesh combined with yielding rock bolts is a ground support system of choice for rockburst prone conditions, the operational upsides recognized during the evaluation imply that this product can also be competitively used in less demanding ground conditions where customarily weld mesh or shotcrete are used as a primary surface support. The main conclusion: a fast, safe and fully mechanized installation.

"The requirements for a metallurgical acid plant treating smelter gases are both unique and demanding in terms of sulphur dioxide treatment and emission control. Since start up in 1981, the copper smelter at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limited has undergone several major expansions. The expansion and modification of the acid plant has been an integral part of this process. Both production demands and government regulations dictate that this metallurgical acid plant be unique in terms of operating flexibility. The variable capacity to treat a wide range of sulphur dioxide concentrations, and the operating flexibility to control emissions are the topics of this paper.INTRODUCTIONThe Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limitied is a base metal mining and metallurgical complex located in Timmins, Ontario. The discovery of the original copper-zinc-silver orebody was announced in April, 1964. Mining operations began in 1966 with a 9000 tonne per day concentrator coming on stream in November of that year. In April 1972, a 108 000 tonne per year zinc plant was commissioned. Over the years the facilities have been expanded, such that the concentrator now has the capacity to process 13 000 tonnes of ore per day . To expand zinc production, the world&apos;s second installation of the Cominco/Sherritt pressure leaching facility was completed in 1983 to bring total zinc production capacity to 125 000 tonnes per year. In 1973, serious planning for a smelter operation began. In early 1975, after studying both continuous smelting and flash smelting processes, a decision was made to proceed with the technology offered by Mitsubishi Metal Corporation of Japan. The Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process was to be used for the smelter and the Onahama No.3 tankhouse technology for the copper refinery.The smelter, which uses the Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process for the continuous production of blister copper from concentrate, went on line in June 1981. It has been expanded from its original capacity of 60 000 tonnes to 100 000 tonnes per year of copper.From the very early design stages for the metallurgical complex, the company had adopted a policy of constructing and operating modern plants which would meet existing and anticipated environmental standards. With this in mind, the decision was made to utilize the proven technology of fixing sulphur dioxide emissions, in the form of sulphuric acid. A 636 tonne per day single absorption contact acid plant was built to serve the zinc plant in 1972. In 1981, an 883 tonne per day double absorption contact plant was built to serve the needs of the copper smelter. The copper smelter acid plant has since been expanded to a design capacity of 1692 tonnes per day and it is the main focus of this paper."

"A need for increased copper concentrate production and for less nickel contamination in that concentrate at Falconbridge's Strathcona Concentrator during 1993 required the installation of a third flotation column and improvements in the operation of the existing circuit. Innovations in wash water distributor and launder design were fundamental in achieving objectives on a new 3 meter diameter column. Minnovex plug-type spargers were tested on a 2.1 meter diameter column in order to reduce maintenance requirements. The paper details the measures taken to enhance column flotation circuit performance and the results obtained.IntroductionFalconbridge's Strathcona Mill receives 10% of the ore feed from a rich copper zone in the Strathcona mine. This ore typically grades 7% copper and 1 % nickel and, because of its high copper content, it is processed in a separate circuit ('C' circuit) which consists of conventional grinding, rougher flotation with the concentrate being treated with lime to pH 12.3 and cyanide followed by column flotation. The columns are operated with mechanical flotation scavengers and the scavenger concentrate is returned to the column feed. Testwork conducted in 1991 showed that the original flotation column (Column 2) could only produce 5.5 mtph of concentrate with less than 0.5% nickel (Figure 1).Between 1991 and spring of 1993, production was increased at times by open circuiting the scavengers. Metallurgical improvements were obtained by improving the wash water distributor of Column 2 and by wash water sprays in conventional cells (1 ). However, the scavenger concentrate assayed 0. 7 -0.8% nickel and was not acceptable for long term operation. When Copper ore production targets were significantly increased for 1993, it became clear that an additional flotation column was required. The new flowsheet employs mechanical scavenger cells on the column tails as in Column 2 circuit (Figure 2). A -parallel configuration was chosen as pulp solids fraction has been shown to be a critical variable and the second column in series would receive a lower density feed."

With the increased use of mechanized rock excavation, there have been developed internationally a number of methods to assess the abrasivity of rock materials. These methods range from determination of abrasive and hard mineral content using petrographic thin section analysis to weight loss or rate of wear flat development on specified test pieces. The Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI) test has been widely accepted for the assessment of rock abrasiveness and is determined as the abrasion of a steel pin after scratching over the freshly-broken or saw-cut surface of a rock. Two types of testing devices are in use today: (i) the original ‘Cerchar apparatus’, and (ii) the ‘West apparatus’, which was adopted herein. The CAI is calculated from the measured diameter of the resulting wear flat on the steel pin after 10mm scratching. This test has been considered to provide a reliable indication of rock abrasiveness for isotropic rocks. However, a great amount of rocks in natureis anisotropic. Phyllite is an anisotropic and foliated metamorphic rock and various types of phyllite specimens were tested in this research. Although phyllite is a type of rock primarily composed of quartz and the expected CAI value can be high, mechanical cutting of this rock should not be very problematic compared with igneous rocks have same CAI value. As phyllite is a foliated metamorphic rock, most of the specimens split into sheets through the quartz seam by the tip during scratching normal to the axis of quartz seams. Hence, viability assessment of Cerchar abrasivity test and F-Schimazek index values for the anisotropic rocks is investigated in this research.

The growing need to measure the extent of weathering of coking coal in storage and in transit prompted the comparison of the dilatation of coking coal on heating, which is known to be a sensitive index of oxidation, with the composition and volume of the gases produced by a mild pyrolysis of the same coal. It was found that the pyrolysis method had the advantage in that it could be used to study coking coals in advanced stages of oxidation, when the swelling properties had been largely destroyed. Of the various constituents in the pyrolysis gas, the most sensitive indication of coal oxidation was the volume of carbon monoxide evolved per gram of coal. For the coals examined, this index appeared to be at its best when the temperature of pyrolysis was approximately 35oC.

"Common properties of commercial geothermal steam reservoirs are a magmatic heat source, the presence of water in vapour and liquid phases, and a surrounding seal of low permeability. The latter may be due to a combination of hydrologic load, argillic alteration and mineral precipitates. The temperature and pressure of vapour and liquid co-existing in equilibrium at maximum enthalpy may approximate 451°F and 450 psi. Steam reservoirs do not necessarily vent steam, but fluid which breaches and mixes with meteoric waters may emerge as hot springs. A systematic exploration program in Western Canada would involve a sequence of four stages utilizing geological, geochemical and geophysical techniques. The geochemical parameters of hot spring waters, such as silica, lithium and potassium content, give some indication of the basic reservoir temperature. The geology of Quaternary volcanics, including reservoir rocks, structure and rock alteration, is of prime importance. The costs of preliminary indirect methods are no more than those of oil and gas exploration; however, high temperatures compound drilling problems and costs. Exploration expenditures of twenty million dollars or so might be needed for a significant discovery. British Columbia and the Yukon Territory contain abundant Cenozoic volcanic rocks and over 50 thermal spring complexes (some with as many as 20 springs in one complex). Six regions are tentatively picked for exploration. Four regions coincide geographically with post-1980 electric power facilities and loads, and with possible alternatives such as potential dam sites. The Lillooet River region, Terrace region and Western Vancouver Island region have inferred potential for the existence of a plus-500-Mw geothermal reservoir. The Kootenay region may or may not have such potential. The Stikine River region has strong evidence of geothermal endowment, but the anticipated power market of the middle future might be only 30-50 Mw. The Whitehorse, Y.T., and Atlin, B.C., region has a belt of thermal springs and Recent cinder cones. The anticipated middle-future needs are real enough, but in absolute terms they are small, say 20-30 Mw. Legislation and policy on geothermal resource rights are lacking in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory at this time. As well as making policy, governmental organizations will play a significant role in geothermal development as buyers of steam or electricity. The role of industry is visualized as assuming the high-cost and high-risk exploration effort, provided the nature of this effort is understood by government."

The rock breakage process in drilling is a main source of noise in roof bolting operations, especially when hard rocks are encountered. Proper control of drilling operation can provide an opportunity to improve energy efficiency of drilling and to reduce noise and heat generated from bit-rock friction. Drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings to confirm this noise-reduction strategy. Preliminary results show that the drilling parameters, penetration and rotational rates can be controlled to achieve in a desirable range in drilling medium hard rock. Based on the theoretical and experimental studies, rational drilling control strategy is developed for noise control while maintaining a safe and productive roof bolting operation. Applying this strategy in underground roof bolting operation, the noise exposure of roof bolter operators will be significantly reduced.

In heap leaching the transport of the acid from the drippers to the surface of the ore particles is a major factor in the overall performance of a heap. This flow behaviour is complex as the flow is unsaturated and occurs along a tortuous set of inter-particle channels and connections. The particle properties such as size, shape and porosity are very important when modelling the liquid holdup and flow within heaps, since the dominant mechanisms at work are quite different. This paper investigates the effect of these particle properties experimentally on heap flow behaviour using a 1-D column leaching system consisting of non-porous glass beads with a system of actual ore particles. The similarities and differences between the two systems on flow behaviour are described using an inter-particle flow model. In addition, the applicability of positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) for laboratory column leaching will be detailed to calculate hydrodynamic dispersion in packed beds compared to more conventional residence time distribution (RTD) tests and also to obtain the time averaged rivulet flow paths through the particles of the bed for the better understanding of heap hydrodynamics.

In the Polish coal mining industry, the use of mine waste in underground backfill has been the most common means of providing ground support to minimize surface subsidence, increasing extraction ratios, and reducing the quantity of waste for surface disposal. Over the last decade attention has been focused on the use of different waste as filling material of underground workings and grouting of roof fall rocks in caving area. In the paper, a brief history of the development of fill technology in Polish coal mining industry is presented. Next, the paper discusses various criteria that should be taken under consideration in the preparation process of a fill slurry and grout, fill distribution systems, mining geometry and placement methods. Moreover, in the paper evaluation of the potential of utilizing coarse and fine waste as a resource material in the production of a backfill slurry and grout for filling and injection in abandoned mines is presented.

"The world&apos;s first zinc pressure leaching plant at Cominco&apos;s Trail operations started production in 1981. Sullivan zinc concentrate is leached at the rate of 190 tpd in a four-compartment autoclave at elevated temperatures and oxygen pressures to produce a zinc sulphate solution and elemental sulphur. Zinc extraction exceeds 98% and sulphide to elemental sulphur conversion exceeds 95%.The sulphur is recovered from the discharged slurry in the underflow of a hydrocyclone, and is upgraded as a flotation concentrate. The concentrate is dewatered, melted and filtered to produce a polished sulphur product of better than 99% purity. An alternative sulphur recovery process employs an unique sulphur separation method that recovers over 90% of the sulphur in the molten state. The remaining sulphur is recovered by flotation following flash discharge of the slurry. The product slurry containing the zinc sulphate solution and the iron-lead residue joins the existing roast-leach zinc plant for purification and zinc electrowinning.IntroductionIn 1981, Cominco Ltd. commissioned the world&apos;s first commercial zinc pressure leaching plant at their Trail operations in British Columbia. As part of a $700 million modernization and expansion program for lead and zinc started in 1977, the company installed the first o f two autoclave trains.Prior to pressure leaching, zinc production was closely tied to acid and fertilizer production. Sulphur dioxide produced from roasting the concentrates had to be converted to sulphuric acid. Thus, any expansion of zinc operations with the roast-leach technology would have required extensive modifications to the acid and fertilizer plants as well as to the roasters. Zinc pressure leaching, on the other hand, offered a one-step dissolution of zinc from the concentrates with high extraction, and production of elemental sulphur. The associated dust and sulphur dioxide generated in the roasting process are both eliminated from the working environment of the pressure leach facility. The flexibility allowed by producing elemental sulphur, and the opportunity to break the sulphuric acid link for about 25 per cent of the targeted 272,000 tonnes per year zinc production was very appealing. The process was successfully demonstrated at a pilot plant in 1977(1-6)."
