The Pembina Cardium pool is a low permeability, stratified, solution-gas drive reservoir. Water-flooding has proven to be an effective means of pressure maintenance for all areas of the pool in which an economic rate of water injection can be maintained. The majority of water injection wells in the pool are converted oil well~ with capacities greater than 100 millidarcy-feet. If the average injection rate per unit of capacity can be in-creased the lower capacity areas of the pool can be economically flooded. Theory, laboratory work, and two . early miscible-flooding projects with-in the pool suggested that average water injection rates for converted wells could be increased two to three-fold by the initial injection of natural gas liquids and natural gas. "A comparison of diesel engine power ratings with in-service capability, and the selection of unit size and total number of units are discussed in the paper. Engine specific fuel consumption and its evaluation in relation to manufacturers' tolerances and equipment load factors is reviewed along with the suitable plant layout. The potential for heat recovery is discussed in connection with simple and operable recovery systems f or exhaust and cooling circuits. Maintenance standards as related to improved reliability and reduced fuel and operating costs are also outlined. IntroductionDiesel generators are used in Canadian mining operations to provide electrical power for "" base- load"" requirements in some instances and for ""stand-by"" or ""emergency"" power in almost every producing mine in the country . There are over 300 mines in Canada of which only a handful have to generate their own electricity. Only one or two mine s enjoy access to a hydroelectric site. Consequently, the diesel engine is the principal prime mover because of its high efficiency relative to other prime movers in the size range in question.The author has been associated with several “base-load” plants in addition to participation in numerous projects requiring emergency diesel generators. Records indicate that engine performance in term s of reliability and efficiency lags behind other industries where the diesel engine is used more extensively, such as the shipping industry which is able to make a more prudent selection of original equipment and enjoy easy access to highly skilled operating and maintenance personnel. It is hoped that the contents of this paper will be of value to Canadian operators of diesel generators, in the generation of prime power or applications for back-up power."

"THE ISLANDS lying north of the Canadian mainland, and the large Boothia and Melville peninsulas, form one of the great archipelagos of the world; this sparsely vegetated and nearly unpeopled region extends about 1,500 miles east to west and 1,200 miles from the mainland to the northern tip of the northern-most island. Sea access to most of the islands is restricted by ice to the summer season, and the 'polar pack' ice of the Arctic Ocean presses the year round against the northwest margin of the archipelago. Although the region is remote, the accessibility has greatly increased through a network of weather stations, airfields and air routes connecting with southern centres.The area considered in this paper is that part of the island region underlain mainly by sedimentary rocks. In broad terms, this includes the land and sea areas of the archipelago and the adjacent continental shelf, but excludes the dominantly 'Shield' terrain of Baffin Island, and of Melville and Boothia peninsulas. An impression of the size and potential of this sedimentary region may be gained by comparing some areas: the land area of islands underlain mainly by sedimentary rocks is over 300,000 square miles or about 50,000 square miles greater than the area of Alberta. The total area of the region, including the continental shelf and the inter-island areas, may be double this figure, and may approximate one-seventh of the land area of Canada."

"Following several months of test work, water leaching in mined-out areas at Stanrock commenced on a production basis in February, 1963. A combination of fast high-pres-sure washing and rewashing of stopes on a predetermined cycle, and the intermittent sprinkling of low-grade heaps, using both fresh water and recirculated acid water, has proved most successful. There was also a correlation of daily sampling data points to a relationship between the leach water grade and the grade of the material being washed, the leaching time and the location along the dip. An increasing tolerance for uranium by the acid-producing bacteria is also indicated. A steady production rate of 10,000 to 12,000 lbs. of u.08 per month is being maintained, with an over-all mine water grade of 0.25 lb. per ton and a pH of 2.3."

"Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. Froth flotation is used to produce nickel and copper concentrates. As is the case at other operations, the presence of magnesium is detrimental to the flotation products. In the past year, the exploitation of a new deposit has increased magnesium in the feed. Thus, it has been challenging to meet the required ratio in the final nickel concentrate. In search for a consistent solution for this problematic, an empirical flotation simulator making use of selectivity curves was developed. The circuit was expressed as a system of linear equations, which considered the distribution of copper, nickel and gangue minerals in the different streams. The relative quantities of each mineral are given by the separation efficiency curves of the various banks in the circuit. Three sources of data were used to calibrate the simulator: historical plant data (metallurgical balance), infinite dilution bench-scale flotation tests, and direct sampling of flotation cells. The calibrated separation curves were used to predict the recovery of the different species based on a single mineral recovery. Validation of the simulator showed good fit for the valuable minerals. The simulator was then used to infer the optimal operating conditions of the flotation circuit to optimise magnesium oxide content of the nickel concentrate. Simulation of two re-arrangements of the circuit gave a promising solution with a Fe:MgO ratio 2.42 times higher than the minimum value.INTRODUCTION Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Quebec. "High pressure die casting is a promising process to make thin-wall components with high dimensional accuracy and excellent surface quality. However, the non-uniformity is one of the important features in castings. The inhomogeneity in tensile properties and microstructural characteristics were studied for the castings with different thicknesses made by high pressure die-cast Al-Mg-Si alloys. For the local mechanical properties in the die-castings, the casting skin provided the highest, whereas the casting centre provided the lowest yield strength, UTS and elongation. The yield strength, UTS and elongation were significantly decreased towards the casting centre. The microstructural inhomogeneity is characterised by the segregation of coarse fragmented dendrites, the reduction of solute concentrations of Mg and Si, and the increase of porosity level from the surface to the centre of castings. The growth velocities of eutectic a-Al phase estimated using the Jackson-Hunt model confirm that the growth variation is larger in the thin castings than that in thick castings.INTRODUCTION Inhomogeneity is an inherent characteristic in as-cast microstructures of a variety of alloys because of their non-uniform chemistry, microstructure, defects, topology and the resultant mechanical properties in the different ranges of localization (Campbell, 2003). Generally, three types of inhomogeneities characterise casting microstructures, which include (a) the casting defects of shrinkage and gas porosity, misruns, cold shuts, inclusions, hot tears and hot spots; (b) the non-uniform microstructure from the surface to the centre of castings; and (c) the non-uniform microstructure from the dendrites grown from primary solidification and the structure formed during the subsequent eutectic solidification in inter-dendritic regions. The chemical composition and the morphology between the primary dendrites and the inter-dendritic eutectics also differ in the as-cast microstructure. Obviously, the inhomogeneity is different in the castings obtained from different casting processes."

"The Mac porphyry molybdenum prospect is located 100 km east of Smithers in central British Columbia. The identification of anomalous levels of molybdenum, copper, and silver in three adjacent lakes, sampled during a regional lake sediment survey, lead to the discovery of molybdenite mineralization in float. Subsequent magnetic and soil geochemistry surveys, together with prospecting and mapping, located the source of the float. Mineralization is hosted by a leucocratic granite stock of the Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Francois Lake Intrusions which has intruded Carboniferous and Permian Cache Creek Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The stock measures 500 m by 300m at surface and is mineralized throughout. Sulphide mineralogy is simple and consists of molybdenite with minor pyrite and local chalcopyrite. Molybdenite occurs within fractures and as selvages along quartz stockwork veins and is best developed near the margins of the stock.Known mineralization is coincident with distinct soil geochemistry and magnetic anomalies. Two additional areas of the property display similar features and these remain to be tested.IntroductionThe Mac property is situated in the Babine Lake area of central British Columbia on NTS map sheet 93K/13E, approximately 100 km east of the town of Smithers (Fig. 1). The property lies on the western margin of the Hogem Range at the northern tip of the Nechako Plateau. The centre of the claim block lies at 54°51 ' 30""N and 125 °34 '30""W.Topographically, the claims are characterized by gently rolling hills ranging in elevation from 900 m to 1500 m. Slopes are forested with tall conifers and underbrush is minimal. Flat-lying areas are swampy with tall grasses and scrub brush.Presently, the property is only accessible by helicopter from bases located in Smithers and Fort St. James. Recent road construction by the British Columbia Forest Service has brought road access from Burns Lake to within 5 km due south of the property. It is expected that in the near future, roads will be advanced into the claim area to facilitate logging of mature timber."

ALBERTA has been generously endowed with oil, natural gas, coal and water power, thus giving power producers a wide choice in the type of plant and fuel which can be used. Therefore, with such a variety of energy sources to choose from, why was coal selected as the primary fuel at Calgary Power's Wabamun steam plant? This part of the paper will cover the circumstances that led the Company to decide in favour of coal. The second part, to be presented by C. F. Doerr, will describe how the Wabamun coal mine has been developed to supply the large fuel requirements of the power plant. Before considering the Wabamun plant, we require a general under-standing of? the Company's electric system and load. Power is fed into a 5,100-mile high-voltage transmission grid from eleven hydroelectric plants and from the Wabamun steam electric plant. Established in 1997, Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada Mining Matters (PDACMM) is a registered charitable organization dedicated to providing Earth Science education to grade school students. Through the development and distribution of educational programs and materials, PDACMM informs students of Canada?s geology and mineral resources as well as promoting awareness of the importance of rocks, minerals, metals and the mining industry. PDACMM also co-ordinates with other charitable organizations and government agencies to provide support or to work in tandem with them and reach as many young people as possible. Although PDACMM became a charitable organization in 1997, it actually has its? roots in 1994 when the Grade 7 program Mining Matters/Une Mine de Renseignments was developed to help teachers bring geology and mining into the classroom. Over 2100 of these resource kits were distributed to teachers across Ontario during the period 1995 to 1998. This unit won national recognition when it received the prestigious Partnership Focus award from the Conference Board of Canada for ?promoting science literacy for the world of work?. Due to the phenomenal success of these kits, a Grade 4 kit entitled Deeper and Deeper/Aller au Fond Des Choses was developed in 1998 in response to the opportunity provided by the new Ontario curriculum released at that time. Over 2600 of these kits were distributed throughout Ontario and there is a substantial waiting list of teachers hoping PDACMM will be able to raise enough money for another print run.

"This paper is based on data generated between October, 1986 and October, 1989, during the implementation of an Ecological Engineering close-out for a zinc mine in Northern Ontario, where 690000 tonnes of tailings contain 41.1% pyrite and 4.1% pyrrhotite. The objective was to determine rates of sulphide oxidation and iron precipitation in the tailings. Those rates are relevant for the assessment of the long-term effectiveness of biological systems employed in the removal of heavy metals from contaminated drainage issuing from tailings.Data were collected on the topography and stratigraphy of the tailings basin, subsurface temperatures and groundwater levels, and chemical analyses were made of water samples collected from a number of piezometers. The thickness of unsaturated tailings varied widely between individual piezometer locations; annual maxima ranged from 0.67 m to 3.55 m, and annual minima from 0 to 2.68 m. Sulphate concentrations ranged from 36 mg/L to 20180 mg/L; iron concentrations from 0.36 mg/L to 9938 mg/L; and zinc concentrations from 0.33 mg/L to 1123 mg/L.The geochemistry of the piezometer samples suggests that some of the initial Fe content, resulting from metal sulphide oxidation, is subsequently precipitated in the tailings pile and, possibly, in the underlying unconsolidated sediments, probably in the form of iron-hydroxide and Na-jarosite. Other metals such as Zn may be co-precipitated with Fe. The discharge of a portion of these metals to the environment would be delayed by this process. Some of the initial sulphate may also be lost from solution, probably by precipitation of gypsum; approximate saturation degrees for gypsum ranged from -3.27 to +0.47. The precipitated minerals will somewhat decrease the porosity and permeability of the tailings.Sulphide-oxidation rates, calculated using the analytical results and the estimated amount of annual recharge at the tailings site, average 0.0057 mol/kg/yr. Calculated iron-precipitation rates average 0.000386 mol/kg/yr. It is concluded that the characteristics of seepage from mining wastes may change with time, reflecting the solubilization of precipitated secondary minerals."

"Asbestos Corporation Limited, incorporated in 1925, operates four asbestos mines and three asbestos mills in the Thetford Mines 1•egion of Quebec's Eastern Townships. A unique asbestos orebody, located in the Ungava Peninsula of Nouveau Quebec, was purchased by Asbestos Corporation Limited in 1964 and commenced production in 1972. As there were no existing facilities in the isolated, arctic region of Asbestos Hill, it was necessary for Asbestos Corporation Limited to construct at Deception Bay a deepsea wharf, a large ungraded fibre shed, a power plant and camp facilities. Forty-two miles of road were needed and were constructed from Deception Bay to Asbestos Hill. At Asbestos Hill, a complete crushing-drying-milling complex, a power plant, pe1•sonnel accommodations and open-pit facilities were provided. Unloading facilities and a fib1•e finishing mill we1l constructed at Nordenham, West Germany. The ""Asbestos Hill- Nordenham Story” is divided into individual papers covering all aspects of the engineering, construction and operation of this unique enterprise. Particular emphasis has been placed on those unusual aspects caused by the isolated location, arctic conditions, short shipping season and the deep permafrost."

"From preliminary investigations it has been observed that although evaporation losses may be estimated by comparing single values of certain physical properties of crude oils and their evaporation residues, such techniques possess little accuracy unless both the evaporation process and the variation of the property as a function of the process are completely known. The accuracy of estimation may be increased somewhat through the comparison of property mid-per-cent curves. Further increases in accuracy are possible if bottoms yield •curves rather than mid-percent curves are used. The use of both the mid-percent and bottoms yield curves however involves a prohibitive amount of effort in most cases. Examinations of distillation bottoms from Hempel type distillations carried to end points just short of the cracking point have indicated that these bottoms are not appreciably affected by the evaporation process. It was further observed that bottoms of identical API gravity, obtained from a crude oil and its evaporation residues behave as if they were pure components which were unaffected by evaporation. Based on these observations Hempel distillation bottoms of equal API gravity were obtained for a crude oil and its various evaporation residues from API gravity bottoms yield curves. The volume percent of these bottoms in the crude oil and its residues were used to calculate the evaporation losses suffered by the crude in order to yield the various residues. The results indicate that, although further refinements in technique are required, it is possible to calculate evaporation losses with an accept-able degree of accuracy through the use of this method."

If the metals sector is to contribute successfully to sustainable consumption we must adopt principles and practices which address the entire life cycle of the materials we produce. Progress must be founded on a sense of shared responsibility for the resources we utilize and the materials we create - it is this integrated approach which lies at the heart of materials stewardship. Materials stewardship means mining and metals companies producing materials in a responsible manner and then working with others, beyond their site, to ensure that the downstream material flows and applications are managed properly to create maximum societal value. In September 2006 ICMM published 'Maximizing Value: Guidance on implementing materials stewardship in the minerals and metals value chain'. This document takes a practical view presenting structured guidance as well as good practice case studies. In the publication, materials stewardship is described in terms of the range of activities that can be undertaken to ensure that all parties work collectively toward the responsible use of metal and mineral resources. This paper introduces the materials stewardship concept as set out in `Maximizing Value' and describes the business case for implementation as well as the ICMM framework for promoting materials stewardship.

"Results of a program of dust research carried out at the Mines Branch Laboratory, Elliot Lake, indicate that dust-concentration estimates vary greatly, depending on the sampling instrument, the assessment technique and the properties of the dust cloud. The wide range of the ratio between the estimates by any pair of instruments shows that the correlation between the health hazard and dust-concentration estimates by most existing sampling instruments must be questionable. Important studies are being carried out to permit the definition of mine environments in more precise technical terms. The influence of size selection, the physical property measured, composition and sampling period on the assessment of the health hazard are discussed."

"The results of a chemical and mineralogical study of eighteen opaque-oxide occurrences are discussed and the detailed chemical, metallurgical and mining feasibility study of a vanadium-rich magnetite deposit is summarized. A plot of the mol-percentages in the system FeO- Fe2O 3-TiO2 indicates that the deposits fall into two distinct groups: some contain hematite with ilmenite, and some others have magnetite with ilmenite (titaniferous magnetites). The plot also suggests that the two types of deposits were crystallized from liquids of different compositions. Each group has its distinct structural features. Vanadium is present in all of the studied specimens, however concentrations of economic importance have so far been found only in the titaniferous magnetite deposits. The vanadium content of the oxide concentrations of the Dore Lake Complex is the largest among the studied occurrences. Analyses of the concentrates of the drill-core sections show a compositional variation across the orebody; a continuous increase in the tenor of Ti02 and a decrease in the vanadium content upward in the layered sequence is found. Concentration tests on several tons of samples indicate that about 80 per cent of the vanadium is recovered in the magnetite concentrate."

Introductory The steady advance in the price of lead and zinc in the metal markets of the world during the past few years has resulted in an active search for new deposits of these metals, and to the re-examination of known properties that are now idle. There are a number of deposits of these metals in eastern Canada, the best known of which are the Tetreault mine at Notre Dame des Anges, Que.; the Reader mine on Calumet island, Que.; the Stirling property in Cape Breton, and the Federal mine in Gaspe district, Que. . The author has run concentration tests on the ores from the first three mentioned properties. The ores from Notre Dame des Anges and Calumet island presented problems in concentration which were not successfully solved until the past year. Although considerable experimental work has been done by the Ore Testing Laboratories on the ore from the Stirling mine we have not been successful in developing a satisfactory method of treatment. Character and Types of Ores Metallurgically the lead-zinc ores of eastern Canada may be classified into three distinct types as follows: First: - Ore in which the sulphide minerals are fairly coarsely crystalline and can be freed by crushing to 40 or 60 mesh. The zinc blend has a high iron content (not marmatite) and gives a dark brown colour on grinding. The ores of Notre Dame des Anges and Calumet island, Que., may be cited as examples.

THE following is a brief description of the method of hoisting ore automatically at the No. 14 shaft of Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, Schumacher, Ontario. All ore and waste below the 3875-ft. level is hoisted up No. 14 shaft from the 7000-ft. level to the 3000-ft. level. Seventy to seventy-five per cent of the mining is done in this area. The shaft consists of four compartments: a man way, a ventilation compartment and two skip compartments. The hoist, located on the 3500-ft. level (see Figure l), is an 80-in.-diameter, 4-rope friction winder, utilizing two 6-ton front-dump skips in balance. The hoist is powered by a 1,100-h.p. A.C. motor, the maxi-mum speed being 2,400 ft. per minute. The operation can be either manual, push-button automatic from the pocket, or fully automatic. Men can be raised or lowered in the skips, using a collapsible aluminum platform placed inside the skip box.
