"In 1986, anomalous sampling results for heavy minerals were obtained at various sites in Namaqualand on the west coast of the Cape Province. Drilling in 1987 at Graauwduinen penetrated up to 35 meters of heavy mineral-bearing Tertiary sands which extend several kilometers inland from the coast. The heavy mineral suite includes ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon and monazite, along with gamet, pyroxene and amphibole. Three deposits are recognized, two of which comprise the resource to be mined by Namakwa Sands Limited, a recently formed Anglo American Corporation subsidiary company.Mineable reserves in excess of 500 million tonnes have been delineated, sufficient to sustain mining for over 35 years at projected production rates. During the feasibility study, on-site investigations included test mining at various sites to assess rnineability and to provide material for metallurgical testing in a pilot plant located at the site. llmenite produced at the mine will be smelted at a new facility to be built at Saldanha Bay. Saleable products comprise titania-rich slag, pig iron, zircon and rutile.During the exploration phase, company environmental guidelines were established and monitored. The feasibility study incorporated a Class 1 Environmental Impact Report, the contents of which were made public following the principles of the Integrated Environmental Management legislation."

"Recent engineering advances in open pit rock mechanics have resulted in improved pit wall slope design and improved operating procedures in the event of a major wall instability. At the other end of the spectrum, on the scale of single bench failures, considerable discretion is left to the mine operators as to how potential problems are handled. The usual alternatives are either to operate with caution beneath potential hazards, or try to bring the unstable rock down. In specific cases it may be advantageous to attempt to stabilize rock structures for reasons of access and operating safety.A t the Brenda Mines open pit a prominent structure on the north wall had caused recurring bench-scale wedge failures when exposed on each mining level. In spite of operating precautions a shovel was hit by a rockfall causing significant damage. The first section of this paper describes the investigative, design, and stabilization methods which permitted subsequent mining beneath the structure to proceed without incident. Emphasis is placed on the personnel and equipment resources available at the mine site which were used to minimize costs and which would be available at most operating mines.The second section describes an ongoing research project that utilizes radio telemetry to transmit slope monitoring data. As part of this project the wedge structure was instrumented so that it could be continuously monitored with the aid of a computer. The application demonstrated the potential of 'micro- chip' technology to remote data collection and processing as related to rock structure monitoring, slope stability and safety."

"Devices and flowsheets for recovering fine placer gold are reviewed. Inefficiencies of gravity processing techniques are documented and discussed. Prospects of combining gravity and froth flotation techniques are presented. Possibilities of using other separation techniques, such as magnetic and electrostatic devices are also discussed.IntroductionSeveral new methods for beneficiating different types of placer ores have been developed in the last two decades. Improved efficiencies in the recovery of fine particles have been achieved by improving gravity flowsheets and machines as well as by developing multiple treatment techniques involving flotation, magnetic and electrostatic separations. Placer gold processing, however, has been an exception to some extent. Gravity concentration using riffled sluices accompanied by mercury amalgamation is still the main method in use today. Because of this, the recoveries of fine gold and the other associated values are often similar to those achieved several decades ago. For example, very few sluice systems recover significant placer gold finer than 100µm in size.Only a few proposals for using alternatives to simple gravity methods for recovering fine placer gold can be found in the published literature. The fixed, low gold price discouraged research in this field for many years. Development of more efficient processes has not kept pace with the recent rapid escalation in the price of gold. Froth flotation for saving fine placer gold might now prove economic, for example. This paper reviews literature published on the recovery of fine placer gold over the period 1907 to 1980. Suggestions for improving the performance in this field, based on the authors' current testwork, are also presented."

Canadian newspapers from coast to coast, have been, for months, denouncing those articles entitled, "The Whisper of Death," which have been appearing in the Montreal Star. I have not read these articles as the newspapers do not print them; they just denounce them or class them as jokes. Apparently they think that they are not suitable for the ordinary Canadian to read. It appears, however, that the Star has said that unless we balance our budget, and that soon, we shall be bankrupt. That seems to me like common sense, though the Victoria Times says editorially that the Star claims will "shortly find a place in the joke column". In this editorial the Times quotes with much enthusiasm from the Quebec Telegraph. "Canada," says the Telegraph, "is all right. Her natural resources are so vast that no one need worry. Her future possibilities are limitless; her assets beyond figures". Does it not seem like the limit of nonsense for a country that is not paying its running expenses to make such pretensions? After fifty-five years of Confederation and much talk of national status we are still sponging on the mother country for our external defense; we still allow the hard pressed tax-payer in the old land to shoulder the entire burden. We even now refuse to accept able-bodied working-men from that small and overcrowded country and yet blatently talk of limitless resources.

"This paper describes the simultaneous sinking and equipping of a 4.9 m diameter concrete-lined shaft to a projected depth of 1660 m. The shaft blast design utilizes the full face method using a parallel hole burn cut. Hydraulic drilling and a totally redesigned Cryderman-type mucking unit were integrated into the four deck sinking stage to provide for drilling, mucking, concreting and shaft steel equipping operations. A safety program was tailored and implemented specifically for this shaft sinking project.IntroductionIn July 1988, Falconbridge Limited commenced development of its Thayer Lindsley exploration site located some four km north of Sudbury on Regional Road 80.The first phase of this project was awarded to J .S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited and the scope of work included the engineering and project management to construct a surface plant capable of supporting a shaft sinking and exploration program for potential future mine development. This initial phase of the project was completed on schedule and under budget on December 23, 1988, and is the subject of an independent paper.In November 1988, J.S. Redpath Limited was awarded the shaft sinking and exploration phase of this project. The scope of work consisted of sinking and equipping a 4.9 m diameter shaft to a depth of 1660 m and carrying out the development and diamond drilling on two levels. This work was scheduled to be completed by November 1991.The T .L. Exploration Project is located toward the eastern end of the south range of the Sudbury basin, north of Sudbury. Figure 1 details the projected mining area and the shaft location on the geological complex. Figure 2 is a section showing the exploration shaft that is located in the Norite. Two levels will be developed from this shaft, on the 1310m and 1588 m levels, to provide access for further geological examination of the ore bodies."

A classification of important uranium deposits which utilizes both genetic and descriptive criteria is presented. The dual aspect is useful because, while the non-genetic nomenclature for the different deposit types is amenable to various interpretations, the critical characteristics of each deposit type can be analyzed to clarify various genetic points. Although the classification is intended primarily for Canadian uranium deposits, most of the important deposit types known elsewhere can be accommodated.

Old iron nails are one of the most common objects which entice the general public to ask questions about the history of metallurgy. There is a lot of history in old nails - history of the manufacturing industry, and social and economic history. Nails, therefore, are fine teaching tools; whether students have to acquire metallurgical skills or explore the structure and properties of wrought iron, whether they want to look into the history of inventions and the development of machinery, studying nails tells a story better than any teacher or any book. I have used this approach often and the following note is based on several student projects, particularly the work of Carmina Herrero and Vicky Marchant. Nails, those essential metallic fasteners, have long been with us. Their size, shape and design is basically a compromise between the makers' ability to control and manipulate material and the demands of the intended application. There were copper and bronze nails in antiquity, but in this paper I want to deal only with iron nails. In Rome, iron nails were common, and Cleere carried out the fine metallographic investigations on a large stock of nails recovered from a Roman fort site in Scotland. Those nails were hand forged; sorting them at the site on the basis of length, shape of head and shape of shank (in cross section) indicated that there seemed to have been some nail standardization. It appears that the Roman smiths used a series of heading dies starting with a 1/s-in. size. Each successive size increased by approximately 1/16-in. The metallographic inspection of the microstructures of the nails showed that the smaller nails were made in the one operation; i.e. both the tapering and the formation were accomplished on the heated rod without reheating. However, in the case of the larger nails, the nail had to be reheated for the tapering after the head had been forged. Most nails were tapered on all four sides of the shank and the shanks were square in cross section; only one group had rounded shanks. Most heads were flat disks, but in one group the heads were pyramids and another group had conic heads. Figure 1 shows the procedure used to produce the pyramidal heads. Obviously, Roman nail making was sophisticated and each nail design was meant for a particular use.

"This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge of the mechanical properties of the shales and greywackes which constitute the flysch-type deposits of the Baixo Alentejo Flysch Group, in the south of Portugal. These formations are flysch-type deposits constituted by sequences of usually thick greywacke beds alternating with thin shale beds, which include sometimes intercalations of conglomerate beds. All the sedimentation of these flysch formations was controlled by tectonics. At the same time, should have occurred along with the first Hercynian deformation phase, a low-grade metamorphic event (chlorite zone), that affected these flysch deposits. This study highlights the influence of anisotropy and heterogeneity of these flysch rocks on their physical and mechanical characteristics. The anisotropy verified in some physical properties and on mechanical properties, due to the foliation makes difficult the sample preparation for the laboratory tests. Besides, it induces a scattering of the properties values measured, as for example, the strength and the deformability. The heterogeneity is related to the main features of these geological formations, which are constituted mostly by thinly stratified greywackes and shale beds, which sometimes may affect the results of the laboratory tests making them less representative. The study is made by using both shales and greywackes that constitute these flysch-type deposits in order to evaluate their geotechnical properties, mainly of the shales. Samples of these two rock materials, are tested accordingly a laboratory testing programme, which includes which included mineralogical analysis (X-ray diffraction), physical tests (bulk density, porosity, and void index) and mechanical tests (uniaxial compression, and deformability tests). INTRODUCTIONOne of the factors that most influence the geomechanical behavior of rocks, as well as rock masses is the anisotropy. The word anisotropy comes from two Greek words ""anisos"" (meaning uneven) and ""tropos"" (meaning direction). A body or material is considered to be anisotropic, where the same property has different values depending in which direction it is measured, therefore, an anisotropic material is one whose magnitude of the properties depends on the direction in which these are studied or measured. Otherwise, it is about an isotropic material. However, the fully isotropic materials are quite rare in nature."

"During the fall of 1993, a new Pill-based control strategy was installed in the B grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Ltd. The control strategy was first evaluated on a grinding circuit dynamic simulator (DYNAFRAG), which permitted the discrimination between more than a dozen possible control alternatives. Once the final choice was made the necessary instruments were purchased and installed. The control strategy was configured on the plant computer and is planned to be commissioned shortly.This paper summarizes the control strategy, the design procedure, the installation and the controller tuning. Some preliminary problems posed by the process prior to implementation are also presented.IntroductionIn 1990 the GRAIIM (french acronym for Research Group on Computer Applications to the Mineral Industry) of Laval University started a research project on Knowledge Based Automatic Control (KBAC). This project is sponsored by a consortium of eight mining companies under the umbrella ofMI1EC (Mining Technology Council of Canada), the Quebec Mining Association (AMQ), CANMET and the Centre de Recherches minerales (CRM). The project also benefits from important grants from the Ministere de l'Education Superieure et de la Science and the NSREC-CRD program.The main objective of this project is the screening of advanced (knowledge-based) methods for data processing (filtering, mass balancing, etc.) and automatic control (model-based control) for their use in the mineral processing operations. The project also aims at transferring these tools to the industrial partners through annual workshops for plant engineers, annual symposia, and through specific in-plant projects where the participation of plant engineers is strongly encouraged.The main objective of this project is the screening of advanced (knowledge-based) methods for data processing (filtering, mass balancing, etc.) and automatic control (model-based control) for their use in the mineral processing operations. YOU will likely recall the accomplishments of the International Geophysical Year of 1957, with its polar expeditions, the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts and the spectacular launchings of the first artificial earth satellites. Our know ledge of the exterior of the earth was greatly increased by this international, friendly, cooperative scientific investigation. The Inter-national Union of Geodesy and Geo-physics has now been joined by the new International Union of Geological Sciences in sponsoring a similar study of the earth's interior. The program will extend from January, 1962 until December. 1964, and is known as the International Upper Mantle Project. During the T.G.Y studies of the interior of the earth were relatively neglected, even though the same international •Cooperation in obtaining simultaneous world-wide observations, by similar instruments, is required to locate and study earth-quakes, for example, as it is to study the earth's upper atmosphere. The upper mantle is 1•emote from man, as it extends from a depth of about 10 km. to perhaps 1000 km., but its practical importance is great.

"This paper presents key outcomes of a major Asia-Pacific Partnership project between the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd. to develop and demonstrate advanced technologies at Pansan mine, Huainan, China. A comprehensive approach assessed fundamental strata and coal seam methane conditions during mining and optimized mining sequences and coal mine methane capture systems. The project demonstrated a practical approach and procedures for advanced coal and methane co-extraction systems, improved mining safety and efficiency, increased methane capture and use, and reduced fugitive methane emissions.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article donne les principaux résultats d’un grand projet de partenariat Asie- Pacifique entre le CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) [Organisation de recherche scientifique et industrielle du Commonwealth australien] et le Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd.; ce projet cherche à développer et à démontrer des technologies avancées à la mine Pansan, à Huainan, en Chine. "Abstract-The ""Brunswick Horizon"" an informally named ore-bearing unit near the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation in the Ordovician Tetagouche Group, hosts the Brunswick No. 6 and No. 12 base-metal mines, as well as the former Austin Brook iron mine, in northern New Brunswick. Detailed structural analysis of the No. 6 and No.12 mines led to the prediction that a massive­ sulfide deposit may have been repeated by F1 folding along the Brunswick Horizon. A subsequent drilling program discovered the new massive-sulfide North End Zone at a vertical depth of 1100 m, 1 km north of the No. 12 underground workings. By the end of 1990, Zn-Pb-rich massive sulfides had been delineated over a strike length of 200 m and a down-dip extent of 170 m. Rock units intersected in the North End Zone are generally thinner and vary somewhat from those at the Brunswick No. 12 mine. Thinning of the hanging wall rocks may be primary, may result from attenuation along F2 folds, or may represent truncation by a thrust fault. The newly discovered sulfide zone indicates that significant potential exists for the discovery of other deposits at previously unexplored depths.SOMMAIRE-Dans le nord-est du Nouveau-Brunswick ""l'horizon Brunswick"" est le nom usuel de la zone qui contient les mines de métaux de base Brunswick No. 6 et No. 12, ainsi que l'ancienne mine de fer Austin Brook, toutes situées sur le dessus de la Formation ""Nepisiguit Falls"" dans le Groupe Tetagouche d'âge Ordovicien. Suite à un programme de forage, la nouvelle zone de sulfures massifs appelée le ""North End Zone"", profonde de 1100 rn, et à une distance d'un km au nord des chantiers souterrains, fut découverte vers la fin de l'année 1990, les sulfures massifs riches en Zn-Pb ont été délimités sur une longueur de 200 rn et une hauteur de 170 rn le long du pendage. Les unités de roches intersectées dans le ""North End Zone"" sont généralement plus minces et sont quelque peu différentes de celles de la mine Brunswick No. 12. L'amin­ cissement des roches pourrait être primaire ou être le résultat de l'atténuation le long des plis F2, ou soit tronqué par une faille. "One approach to making new technology available is to demonstrate its value under full-scale operating conditions. Studies were undertaken to assess the feasibility of this approach to introducing a longwall mining system to the western Canadian coalfields.The longwall method of mining coal is described, world and Canadian usage is reviewed, and the merits of the system in comparison 10 other coal mining methods are discussed.The rationale for a longwall demonstration in western Canada is presented, along with a proposed organization for the design, operation and dissemination of the findings from such a trial. The factors which must be considered in the design of the demonstration, and in the assessment of a potential site are highlighted. It is concluded that a demonstration of this technology is both timely and essential to prepare the way for the western Canadian coal industry of future prospects for coal.IntroductionFor many years CANMET has encouraged research work organized on a cooperative basis. This requires that a working consensus must be negotiated by researchers and operators at the beginning of the project and continuously refined as work proceeds. The result is usually a more relevant selection of research problems, improved direct ion and con duct of experiment al work and often a validation phase in which research concepts are tested in an opera ting environment. All this tends to narrow the gap between obtaining research results and applying them.Even under the best of circumstances cooperative projects require a good deal of coordination and enthusiasm to maintain focus and the pace of work. The working perspective of a research scientist in a government laboratory is substantially different from that of a mine operator at a producing mine, and a common ground must be found. This is difficult to do and cooperative projects typically evolve over several years as experimental results progressively define the potential solutions to mining problems."

This paper presents an experimental study conducted to facilitate the use of RFID on construction job sites. The study focuses on deployment settings to provide data acquisition with higher accuracy for indoor location sensing. It provides extension to the state-of-the-art in this field as it addresses the impact of metal media proximity to RFID tags, the reasonable duration for data capturing, number of RFID tags employed and the distance between them. Low cost passive RFID tags were used in the experiments where each tag is used as a reference point with a known location. Five hundred and forty (514) experiments were conducted in lab environment using a 3m by 3m test bed that is dynamically rearranged to generate 15 test beds and a total of 67713 data sets were collected and analyzed. The collected data were captured from nine locations for each test bed at four time intervals. Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) was used as the main attribute for signal measurement to process the captured data. Results of the data analysis performed are studied under four main categories: duration, number of tags, locations of tags and metal interference. The best duration was found to be the 15 second in the test bed with the least number of tags; as the short amount of time to capture data did not allow creation of a lot of interference among the emitted signals. Within each test bed, errors occurred most at points where the received signals were not well distributed in a 360 degree vicinity of the data capturing point. It means that the center point of each test bed resulted in lowest errors and the points located on the extremities led to the highest errors. Finally, metal objects were found to have major impact on the accuracy of the captured data; to the level where reliable values for errors could not be calculated in the test beds attached to metal objects. In summary, the results of the experimental study and related findings are expected to provide guidelines to the users of RFID technology for localization in building construction.

Effective blast fragmentation is essential in underground mining, as it directly influences downstream processing efficiency and operational expenses. This study investigates the application of Non-Newtonian Fluids (NNF) as stemming materials, presenting a novel method to enhance energy confinement, minimize environmental impact, and optimize blast performance. NNFs exhibit shear-thickening behaviour, enabling them to transition between fluid-like and solid-like states under stress, which renders them suitable for regulating explosive gas ejection during blasting. Field trials were performed by Vale Base Metals in Thompson, Manitoba, in their underground nickel mine to evaluate conventional slag stemming against NNF-based stemming in production-scale blasts. Emulsion explosives were employed, and blast performance was assessed through velocity of detonation (VOD) measurements, vibration monitoring, and AI-assisted fragmentation analysis using WipFrag. Preliminary results indicate that NNF stemming improves fragmentation, resulting in a reduction of D50 by as much as 38%, enhances energy confinement, and may decrease the incidence of hole plugging and re-drilling in subsequent blasts. This study presents an alternative to conventional stemming methods, highlighting potential advantages for enhanced safety, efficiency, and sustainability in blasting operations. Additional research and field trials are necessary to improve implementation protocols and facilitate the widespread adoption of this unique method in the mining sector.

"For several years, the existence of a deposit of barite (BaS04) near Brookfield, Nova Scotia, has been known. A very large deposit of strontium (SrS04) near Sydney, Cape Breton, is a more recent discovery. Cape Chemical Syndicate has been formed to work the deposits. A five-million-dollar integrated mineral processing and chemical plant is planned for Sydney to produce various compounds of barium and strontium. The mineral processing plant includes the Jones Wet Magnetic Separator and will produce high-purity barite and celestite. These products will be processed further in the fine grinding plant and the chemical plant. The general project is described, covering the deposits, processing and markets."

"Construction of the first stage of the tailings disposal facility for the Montana Tunnels Project was completed in October 1986. The project is located 37 km south of Helena, Montana, and involves mining of42 million tons of weathered diatreme are at a rate or 13 500 tpd to produce a gold/silver dore, as well as lead and zinc concentrates. The tailings disposal facility for the project includes a fully drained tailings impoundment for storage of the tailings solids, and a process waterpond for storage of all decanted water prior to recyling to the mill. The over-all facility is designed to achieve the basic objectives ofminimizing seepage to the environment in the short- and longterm, and achieving a fully drained stable tailings mass suitable for immediate reclamation on completion of mining. Specific features of the design include a soil bentonite seal and drainage system within the tailings basin, a free draining embankment with a design flow-through capacity of 4000 US gpm and an ultimate height of 230 ft (70 m), and a soil bentonite lined make-up water pond with a capacity of 420 acre-feet (530 000 m'). The tailings will be discharged in a rotational sequence through multiple spigot offtakes to achieve a thin-layer low energy laminar flow. This 'sub-aerial' deposition results in higher stored densities and maximizes liquid-solid separation on the tailings beaches. The over-all design played a major role in the successful permitting of the project, and was significantly cheaper than a conventional wet disposal system, with overall unit costs for tailings disposal of less than US$0.36 per ton.This paper outlines the site characteristics and the tailings material properties and their influence on the design. Extensive use was made of naturally occurring free draining materials as well as bentonite modified soil liners within the tailings basin, embankment and retention ponds. General construction procedures for the various components are described, as well as on-going construction requirements utilizing materials from the open pit. Finally, the over-all costs and unit costs for tailings disposal are presented."

Industrial injury occurrences are an ongoing concern for Mine Operators. Along with the personal suffering of injured workers comes an increase in compensation and productivity costs. Growing recognition of repetitive stress and bodily injuries, accompanied by recent studies, validates the assumption that a relationship exists between ergonomic injuries and machine design. Intuitively, there is a belief that an ergonomically designed machine will reduce repetitive stress injuries through design and education however; quantifying this belief has been a challenge for Mine Operators. Sandvik Tamrock has undertaken a project aimed at developing a business model to assist in quantifying the benefits of ergonomic intervention. This model focuses on distinguishing and quantifying this method of intervention to allow for a better evaluation of the machine. For simplicity, the project initially focused on the Face Drill Jumbos. The target of the project was three fold: !" Recognition of the cost drivers for compensation; ergonomic injuries !" Identification of the relationship between ergonomic machine design, and the decrease of the negative effects associated with the cost drivers !" Systematic prioritization for ?prevention by design? The project findings substantiate the expected reduction in injuries and compensation claims. Based on all ergonomic intervention studies conducted, each case showed a reduction in compensation cost; through prevention by design, one can reduce the amount of potential risk. The paper addresses the resources and methodology used, along with the findings and its relevance to the issues that face the Mining industry.
