Many articles have been written about the various operations of Britannia mines and mill, as well as treatises on the geology and ore deposits. A partial list of these papers is given below. Most of these papers have covered well the history of Britannia, and have included a thorough discussion of the geology and ore deposits; therefore, in this paper, no account of these subjects. is necessary. However, a short description of the ore deposits will be given as an aid to a clear understanding of the descriptions of the various mining methods. The Ore Deposits The ore deposits at Britannia occur along a shear zone and are five in number, named for the claims in which they lie, as follows: Jane, Bluff, Fairview, Empress, and Victoria. Each of these deposits is called a mine, as they are separated by 500 to 1,000 feet of barren ground. The Jane mine, although the first producer of the Britannia group, has not been in operation for a number of years. The deposit is a silicified replacement in sediments; with very little evidence of shearing. The Bluff deposit is a highly silicified replacement in porphyry, massive and irregular, very hard in the upper 600 feet with practically no shearing, and softer within chlorite schist in its lower 1,000 feet . The Fairview deposit consists of a series of twelve distinct veins or lodes, rather lenticular in shape, and occasionally merging.

Given the limited number of new plant construction, focus is turning to the optimization of existing metallurgical roasting plants. To meet the goals of high process efficiency with limited capital expenditure, plant owners are looking for new strategies, including digitization and expert support. As a supplier for numerous roasting, gas cleaning and sulfuric acid plants, Outotec has intensified its effort in recent years to develop solutions to accommodate increasing customer need. This article presents a short review on how Outotec is applying advanced control tools for the fluidized bed industry. Focus will be given on how to transfer the existing technology (used in selected Zinc roasting plants for over a year now) to copper roasting. Outotec has developed the Pretium Roaster Optimizer, a system based on heat and mass-balanced simulation models. Direct experience with this technology will be shared and will highlight similarities to the Partial and Sulfate Copper roasting processes. Pretium detects equipment and plant bottlenecks and provides consistency in process development. The Pretium program combines 24/7 advanced online digitalization tools, along with expert personal support when required. INTRODUCTION Fluidized bed reactors have been used for commercial-scale zinc and copper roasting since the 1950s. While the principles of roasting remain unchanged, over time, the technology has advanced to improve process control of roasting plants. In the past, environmental and safety standards were the driving forces for improvement of equipment and plant design. Today, the emphasis is on plant efficiency and optimization. Another change has come in process control philosophy. While plant control and operation have traditionally been the responsibility of owner/operators, they have now shifted to include both integrated digital tools and specific know-how from engineering companies. This can be seen from the earliest design stages through commissioning and into production, as evidenced by zinc roasting plants in Mexico, Brazil and Turkey.

Flotation is a separation process based on the collection of particles on the surface of bubbles. Flotation machines disperse air into bubbles using a variety of techniques. The characteristics of the bubble population are strongly affected by the selection of frother type and concentration. As metallurgical results depend on the bubble distribution, the measurement of frother concentration is vital to understand and control performance. A previously developed colorimetric technique was refined to work with low solubility frothers and to increase daily analysis rate. Field-testing demonstrated that the method is robust, reliable and accurate. As well as relating frother concentration to gas dispersion measurements, the results can be used to answer operational questions including: how well a frother dissolves, how reliable and stable frother delivery is, how evenly frother is distributed down a bank, and whether frother distributes between the pulp and froth zones. Some of these points are illustrated from plant experiences. The steam-filtration process for dewatering solids involves the application of slightly superheated steam to a filter cake during filtration. The mechanism by which the technique promotes water removal has been deduced from bench-scale experiments on coal and on granular iron ore concentrates. The mechanism, along with some of the applications and limitations of the process, is presented. Introduction I N the steam-filtration process, slightly super-heated steam is applied to the filter cake during filtration to remove more water than can be extracted by conventional filtration. Although this process was developed by Burton for coal filtration (1), it should have far wider applicability; certainly, it could be used to treat any mineral product, because only low-temperature steam is needed and most conventional filtration equipment can be easily adapted to it. As few restrictions apply to this process, however, it is important that its more obvious advantages and disadvantages be appreciated and, especially, that the criteria on which economic evaluations can be based are understood.

Cavity cleaning during anode change generates a material that consists of anode cover material and cryolite melts. This material is scooped and placed in bins for transport and further processing and recycling as fresh anode cover material. Typical processing methods in use involve cooling of the hot cavity bath in bins, with or without emission treatment systems, until it is adequate to be processed and grinded to the required particle size distribution. Handling of the hot and cooled cavity bath material can be labour intensive. It also generates significant air emissions which contain particulate and gaseous fluorides. With the advent of the Aluminerie Alouette smelter Phase II expansion, the hot cavity bath tonnage to be processed increased to 700 t/day and maintaining existing practices was not satisfactory. This article presents a novel process implemented at the Alouette smelter where cavity bath is processed as a hot material directly from the potlines ( 600-800°C range), sized, cooled and then processed in the existing cold bath treatment plant. The system is designed to process 36 t/h, is fully automated and requires limited monitoring from operations. Implementing this new system in a Browrifield environment imposed numerous constraints for space, interfaces with existing operations, commissioning and ramp-up. It is presently operating at approximately 80% availability and is easily meeting the requirements of the potlines. This system has significantly improved the workplace environment in the bath treatment area and reduced the overall particulate and gaseous fluorides emissions at Alouette. "The objective of this work is to study the various parameters that affect the overflow clarity of gravity settlers used in the precipitation circuit of alumina hydrate from the Bayer process. A mathematical model incorporating the size distribution of the feed suspension (Multi Size Group model), its diphasic nature (Schiller Naumann model) and the presence of turbulence (Shear Stress Transport model) has been solved numerically using ANSYS-CFX software. Preliminary results indicate that the overflow clarity is mainly controlled by lateral diffusion of fine particles (~20µm) from the exit of the feed well and by their upward transport from the sediment bed interface. Also the turbulence pattern in the settling zone seems to play a significant role in this vertical transportation. The validity of the model has been verified by comparing the measured solid concentrations from a pilot classifier with the calculated ones. This model could provide mineral processing plant operators and designers with a tool to optimize the configuration of classifiers with respect to the overflow clarity.INTRODUCTIONProblemIn the Bayer process, alumina hydrate precipitation from the saturated liquor is initiated in settler by adding crystallization seeds. Most of the precipitated alumina settles to the bottom of the tank while the liquor and the remaining alumina rise to the top, where they are removed at the overflow. Ideally the overflow clarity, which depends on the operational mode of the classifier, should be controlled within targeted limits."

"The decision to proceed with mine decommissioning, generally involves a number of complex and independent factors. These factors, including potential for re-opening, legal requirements, contingent liability, asset depreciation, due diligence, and public relations are discussed in the context of the financial implications on a net-present- value basis. It is concluded that the decision to delay mine decommissioning is commonly not in the best financial interests of the mine operator. Some measures to reduce decommissioning costs and expedite the process are presented.IntroductionThe primary audience for this paper is mining executives, although it should be of interest to all professionals involved in the planning and carrying out of mine decommissioning. Historically, mines were abandoned, not decommissioned. Then, as decommissioning became required, it was assumed that salvage revenue would pay for decommissioning. During the I980s, it became apparent that mine decommissioning costs would exceed salvage revenue for nearly all sites, and that a substantial net cost for decommissioning would be realized for some sites. Throughout this period, the approach to decommissioning has evolved through the sequential addition of measures to meet the increasing regulatory burden. This has resulted in a process in which the elements of decommissioning may not be optimized with respect to each other for the most favourable net present value to the corporation. Additional considerations which are not specific to mine decommissioning, such as environmental policy, due diligence and public relations, may now come to bear on the decision-making process.This paper addresses the issue of mine decommissioning as a three-step process. The first step involves identification and evaluation of all of the issues that relate to mine closure, the most importantof which is the potential for re-opening of a mine. Assuming that it is decided that a mine is unlikely to re-open, the second step is to determine when to carry out the decommissioning work. This aspect is examined through a net present value (NPV) approach. Finally, details regarding who does the work and how the various tasks are divided up must be resolved.Every mine is a unique concentration of minerals at some specific location, hence the development, operation and closure of a given mine must be regarded as a special case. Superimposed on the site-specific considerations are the size, history and financial status of the associated corporation."

"The proposed classification of ore reserves based on geostatistical and economic parameters is designed to be used as a communication tool to identify for investors, bankers, and financial analysts the degree of risk associated with a specific class of ore reserves. The class designation identifies the degree of accuracy of the estimates for tonnage and grade of annual production volumes of ore. It thus enables decision makers to quantify the risks and uncertainties inherent to the ore reserve in achieving over-all economic goals and annual financial objectives.IntroductionDuring the evaluation, in 1980, of the Creede silver deposit in Colorado, U.S.A., as a potential bulk mining project, the authors were faced with the problem of conveying to senior management the risks and uncertainties that are implied by using common or conventional classification systems to categorize ""ore reserves"". The estimated numbers for tonnages and grade of the projected ore reserves represented the only entry for future revenue from the project. It was, therefore, necessary to convey to management the level of risk associated with those numbers when implementing further stages of development, and to convey what impact significant differences would have on the profitability of the project. The desire to quantify these risks led to a revised definition of ""ore"" and to a re-examination of the classification system of ""ore reserves"". Traditional methods for estimating tonnage and grade of reserves do not include a quantification of the errors of these estimates. The advent of geostatistical methods made this quantification possible. The proper application of geostatistical methods, with adequate geological input and a reliable set of sample data, is essential to its validity.Others have proposed a classification of ore reserves based on geostatistical parameters. Diehl and David (1982) recognized ""that concepts of proven, probable and possible have to be linked to the production rate or time horizon"". Royle (1977) had also addressed this problem. Forsyth (1987) pointed out that bankers are concerned with ""the probability that the variability will fall within a certain degree of accuracy"" especially for grade estimates, and would like to see grades expressed together with the error of the estimate at the 950Jo confidence level."

The results presented in this paper show that the gold solution dilution is a key parameter to control the dispersion of gold on ?-Al2O3 the selected support. The variation of concentration leads to changes in pH which modify the nature of gold complexes from HAuCl4 formed in the solution. These complexes are presented. Some of them (AuCl3(OH)- and AuCl2(OH)2 -) react with the surface of alumina and give interesting interaction. AuCl2(OH)2 complex has been considered as an ideal complex because of the strong anchorage of a bidentate species on the alumina. This complex is formed mainly in a solution of gold with a concentration of 10-4 M giving a pH of 3.5-4.5. The nature of the anchorage and the amount of chlorine, has an influence upon the formation of Au-Cl bridges which modify the dispersion of the gold on alumina of the final catalyst as shown by TEM.

The key issue is the comprehensiveness of the information presented to users. Information can be presented by virtual reality means, when the seemingly true presentation of the production process scene along with user friendly presentation of related information is available. The user in its role of a process supervisor is not only a mere scene observer but, thanks to the interactive functions of virtual environment, he participates in the scene of his control. As such his control and management abilities increase because he can absorb, more easily understand and asses the information provided.

"The interaction between a deformable bubble and a rigid particle in viscous liquids under microgravity conditions is studied by direct numerical simulation via an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. Due to the microgravity, the bubble will stay as a sphere in the fluid without external forces and its deformation is caused by the moving particle. In this study we assume the flow field is axisymmetric and the motion of the gas inside the bubble is neglected. The particle equations and the Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid are solved in a unified finite element framework. The particle obtains an impact velocity by an external force and the impact velocity is varied over a wide range. A ‘critical time scale’ T0 was identified for the interaction process. For successful contacts between particle and bubble, the time scale of their relative motion must be less than T0.INTRODUCTIONThe particle-bubble interaction is an important process in many applied industrial domains such as water treatment, froth flotation and liquid steel purification. It is a complex three phase process in that it embraces many research areas: fluid hydrodynamics, interfacial forces, particle and bubble behaviour and solution chemistry.Derjaguin and Dukhin(1961) clarified the particle-bubble interaction by introducing three-zone model for small and medium size particles. When the particle is far away from the bubble surface, the hydrodynamic forces are dominant. The particle is driven toward the bubble surface by the particle inertial and gravity. This region is regarded as Zone 1 and the interaction in this zone is a collision subprocess. As the particle gets close to the bubble, it exits a zone where the liquid flow around the bubble surface creates a tangential stream from the upper surface of the bubble toward the rear of the bubble. This is Zone 2 which is called the diffusiophoretic zone. In Zone 3, the particle is very closed to the bubble, surface forces like van der Waals, electrostatic and structural forces are considered. Contrast to Zone 1, Zone3 can be regarded as an attachment subprocess."

MODELS of mines may be classified under three headings: (a) sheet models, (b) solid models, and (c) skeleton models. Sheet Models are made of sheets of glass, celluloid, or a transparent plastic material. The sheets are mounted in a frame which holds them in a parallel position, either horizontally or vertically. Mine plans are traced on the horizontal sheets; sections on the vertical sheets. The model may be illuminated by electric lights which are separated from the sheets by an opalescent screen. It is viewed from above or from the side in such a way that the plans or sections are superimposed. Sheet models are very useful for the illustration of mines with narrow, steep-dipping veins, but they do not give a satisfactory representation of a large mine with a flat-dipping vein. Large sheets of glass are difficult to handle and to support in a frame.? It is difficult to see through a considerable number of them. Solid Models are made of plaster, concrete, wood, or other material usually in the form of slabs in which the mine workings are indicated by properly dimensioned cavities in the model. The slabs are coloured to show the veins, country rock, faults, etc. The model is divided along selected sections in order to give access to the interior by the temporary removal of parts. Solid models may be used to illustrate large orebodies of the Sullivan type, but they are cumbersome because parts must be removed to study details of structure. Skeleton Models are ones in which the underground cavities are represented by metal, wood, plaster, or wax proportionately shaped and held in place by a frame. They illustrate the work which has been done but do not show the position of the veins, dykes, faults, etc., in the unworked parts. It is necessary to project by eye between workings in order to determine the location of these features. The essential difference between the skeleton model and the solid model is that the skeleton model represents the mine workings by solid forms and does not show the unworked parts of the vein, whereas the solid model shows the vein as a solid and the mine workings as cavities in it. The skeleton model lends itself well to the representation of a large mine with large stopes.

THE object of this paper is to present a brief summary of the dust control system in use on the 3,825-foot level at the jaw crusher station, Lake Shore mine. During the years 1936 and 1937, dust survey reports were presented to the management showing that high dust concentrations were being created during operating periods. At that time, however, this crusher was running only an hour or so each shift, and it was felt that no large capital expenditure for dust control equipment could be justified. In order to afford some protection to the operators, a number of respirators then on the market were .tested and the 'Comfo' respirator was adopted for use by the crusher-men. In 1938 this crusher began to handle a large share of the total mine tonnage and the hours of operation were increased. Further dust sampling showed increased dustiness with the longer operating time. It was also realized that the operators suffered considerable inconvenience if they wore their respirators throughout the shift. If the respirators were not worn, then dangerous amounts of dust were being inhaled. The fact that the crusher station was situated on the 3,825-foot level limited the means that could be employed to eliminate the dust hazard. At that rime there was not available the 5,000 c.f.m. of fresh air which would be required to sweep out or dilute0 the dust, and there was also no way of disposing of the contaminated air without passing it on for other men to breathe. Thus it became apparent that a self-contained dust disposal system would have to be installed.

ABSTRACT This paper examines several of the systems and processes that have been developed over the past few years and are now being utilized by major mining companies on draglines in North America, Australia and South Africa. These technologies include production monitors and reporting systems, GPS navigation systems, structural integrity monitoring systems, structural analysis studies to increase the dragline rated suspended loads (RSLs) and inspection and response strategies. The use of these technologies provides significant increases in dragline production and reduces maintenance costs, downtime and the chance of a catastrophic failure.

The effect of various N-substituents on the performance of amide-containing tertiary amine compounds in the extraction of Rh(III) from HCl solutions was investigated to optimize the structure of these compounds for industrial use. It was found that N-2-ethylhexyl-bis(N-di-2-ethylhexyl-ethylamide)amine and tris(N-di-2-ethylhexyl-ethylamide)amine, which have long, branched alkyl chains, were suitable for Rh extraction, because they were soluble in a practical diluent (80 vol% n-dodecane?20 vol% 2-ethylhexanol) and stable against highly concentrated HCl/Rh solutions, and showed high selectivity for Rh(III) over Pd(II) and Pt(IV).

Dimpling as a means of flush countersinking rivets is an old process predominantly used in secondary structures. The introduction of GLARE as an aerospace material has renewed interest in dimpling and its possible application in primary structures. The dimpling process is able to prevent the creation of a machined knife-edge in the thin aluminum plies of the GLARE sheets. In addition, dimpling eliminates the need to use reduced height rivets, such as the NAS 1097 rivet style. This investigation expands on an earlier study into dimpling of GLARE by Rans and Straznicky. In order to tailor the dimpling process to GLARE, FEM simulations were developed. After verification, a study was performed to find the best parameters for dimpling GLARE3-2/l. Coupon fatigue tests were carried out and the dimpled joints demonstrated increased fatigue lives over the conventional machine countersunk joints. Future wide panel fatigue tests are planned to confirm the usefulness of dimpling thin GLARE laminates.

An extensive testwork was performed around the HPGR plant at GoldFields Ghana Limited Tarkwa Gold Mine. The HPGR was used to prepare the feed for heap leaching. The circuit was configured in such a way that the edge material from the HPGR discharge was recycled for further crushing while the product from the centre reported to the heap leach section. The set-up of the Polysius HPGR provided an opportunity to study the effect of different design and operating variables. This paper will discuss the results from the tests performed to assess the effect of rolls? speed and applied pressure on the capacity and the grinding efficiency of the HPGR. Applying different pressure values appeared to have an influence on the amount of edge material recycled.

Introduction 1.-lmportance of Physical Nature of Condensates The metals of commercial interest which have reasonably high vapour pressures below 1,200° C. are mercury, cadmium, sodium, zinc, magnesium, lithium, and calcium. With the exception of mercury, these metals occupy high positions on the electrochemical series and form compounds with very high negative free-energies of formation. It is highly desirable that such metals should not be produced in a form which is finely divided, on account of their reactivity with atmospheric gases. Powders of magnesium, calcium, and even zinc (blue powder) are dangerous to handle and cannot be coalesced by simple melting techniques. Vaporization in vacuo forms a convenient method of handling and purifying the alkaline earth metals in particular and a previous paper by the authors dealt with some of the factors controlling the separation of metals by this technique (12). An essential part of the operation is the condensation of the vapour to produce a massive deposit which may be conveniently melted and handled by established metallurgical techniques. This investigation sought to determine the conditions affecting the nature of solid condensates.

The extraction and concentration of nickel from aqueous solutions by emulsion liquid membranes (ELMs) using tributylphosphate (TBP) as extractant has been investigated in this research. The emulsion liquid membrane consists of a diluent (kerosene), a surfactant (Span 80), a mobile carrier (TBP), and a stripping solution (ammonia solutions). Important factors influencing the separation process including membrane composition, feed composition, and mixing speed have been examined. The results show that more than 90% of nickel in the feed solution could be extracted by ELMs under the experimental conditions, indicating the feasibility to use the designated ELMs to detoxify nickel-containing industrial waste solutions.
