Interaction of aluminum with silica based ceramics Jose M. Soto, Jeffrey D. Smith, William G. Fahrenholtz. Department of Ceramic Engineering University of Missouri-Rolla Rolla, MO 65409-0330 USA ABSTRACT Interactions between A356 aluminum (Al-Si alloy) and dense fused silica (FS) riser tubes used for low-pressure casting of aluminum alloys were evaluated using a sessile drop approach. The tubes have a short service life, but cost and thermal shock resistance make them an effective solution. The main problem encountered during use is the reaction of aluminum with silica to form alumina and silicon, which causes failure. Tests have been conducted on as-fired (uncoated) and modified (coated) tubes. Experiments were carried out in a horizontal furnace at 1225°C under argon to minimize the effect of the aluminum oxide on the interactions at the alloy-silica interface. Images of the drop were acquired and contact angle values were estimated for uncoated and coated samples, but no significant differences in the contact angles were observed. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of cracks at the interface between the reaction zone and the unreacted silica. The presence of reaction products (silicon in the reacting alloy and aluminum in a reaction zone between the alloy and the unaffected silica) has been confirmed using energy dispersive spectroscopy. A two layer coating system was found to be effective in reducing penetration of the aluminum alloy. The interactions between bed media and aluminum have been studied under static and dynamic flow conditions. An experimental system was set up simulating a small filter. Desired flow field can be created around alumina particles and velocities can be adjusted. A mathematical model was developed to predict the velocities, and this was validated using data from a visualization study. The interaction zone on the surface of the particles was analyzed with optical microscopy and SEM. This paper presents the study and compares the results under static and dynamic flow conditions.

An attractive way to beneficiate magnesium chloride and aluminum chloride is to prepare Mg-Al spinel, an excellent refractory material. Mg4Al2(OH)14?3H2O, the precursor of spinel, can be prepared using a co-precipitate method from aqueous MgCl2-AlCl3 solutions. The co-precipitation process of magnesium-aluminum from acidified chloride solutions by using NaOH or NH4OH as base neutralization agent was studied. Co-precipitation was conducted from different mixed solutions ? at initial CAl=0.0625M and Mg/Al molar ratio from 0.5 to 10, the temperature range from 30 to 90 °C. The effect of other parameters, including base type, method of base addition, base addition rate, aging time, background electrolyte and concentration were also investigated. The co-precipitation process was monitored by potentionmetric(pH) measurements. The experimental pH curves were characterized by two platforms separated by a steep jump in pH at Mg/Al molar ratio 0.5~6. The first platform was centered at about a pH of 3.8 and the pH of second platform was varied with different conditions. When the Mg/Al molar ratio was up to 6~10, the first platform in pH was almost disappeared. Furthermore, the shapes of pH curves were also affected by base type, base addition rate and method of base addition. Experimental results showed that the first platform in pH was connected with Al precipitation, and the second platform was involved with Mg. The final co-precipitates were characterized by XRD, TGA-DTA, particle size analysis, SEM and TEM. We found both Mg/Al molar ratio and temperature proved to be the key parameters controlling the formation of Mg4Al2(OH)14?3H2O phase. At solution Mg/Al ratio=0.5~4, the main precipitate phase was Bayerite (Al(OH)3) admixed with Mg4Al2(OH)14?3H2O; at Mg/Al ratio=4~6, the main phase was Mg4Al2(OH)14?3H2O admixed with some Mg(OH)2; while from Mg/Al ratio=6~10, the systems were mixtures of Mg(OH)2 and Mg4Al2(OH)14?3H2O.

Ferteco Mineracao, belonging to the CVRD group, is one of the several iron ore mines in the south east of Brazil. Some of these mines have pit walls of over 350-m height and operations under difficult geo-technical conditions are steadily increasing. In order to mine the 15 million tonnes of high grade hematitic ore remaining in the Fabrica pit, Ferteco had to deal with the following restrictions: Warrant power to its concentrator and pellet plant, relocate the load-out rail road loop, stabilise a poor phillyte slope, relocate a creek on a bench, lower the water table and mine at maximum angles at a slope with phillyte and loose itabirites directly under the rail road loop. Considering these aspects, 3 stages of operations were designed, considering a safe operation, but with the lowest possible security factors at the last mining stage, before the pit would be filled in again with tailings. Stage one above the rail road loop and below the high tension power mast, where the poor phillyte slope was secured by a flexible retaining wall, using old rails and anchors up to 27 meters (80ft) with a working pressure of up till 30 tonnes and stage two with different slope angles, and deep wells, high wall blasting perpendicular to the highwall with relief holes and rerouting the creek in steel half culvert and stage three, the filling in with tailings and recuperation of the deep well pumps. Following studies and analysis were made: Geotechnical and geological studies of all rock formations including rock strength test, a hydrological study to define the lowering of the ground water level, slope stability analysis for every bench and all possible combination of benches, definition of blasting parameters close to the pit slope, a monitoring plan, including topographical movements, vibrations due to blasting, piezometers and pressure cells as well as a plan how to fill up the pit again with tailings in combination with the rising of the ground water level. A close co-operation between the geo-technical consultant, pit operations, the blasting contractor and the geological department resulted in an operation without any incidents, lowering the pit with an additional 3 benches and mining an additional 5 million tonnes of high grade ore.

La mine Tio (QIT Fer et Titane Inc.) exploite à ciel ouvert un gisement d?ilménite massive depuis 1950, générant jusqu?à maintenant plus de 70 Mt de roches stériles potentiellement génératrices de drainage neutre contaminé (DNC), dont une partie est submergée dans le lac Petitpas, au nord de la mine. Si généralement l?ennoiement des rejets miniers a un effet bénéfique pour limiter la contamination des eaux, cela reste à prouver pour ce qui est des stériles générateurs de DNC. Des essais en réservoirs ont été réalisés afin d?évaluer la réactivité de trois différents types de stériles submergés, qui ont été choisis en fonction de leur teneur en ilménite. Afin d?évaluer l?impact de la matière organique sur la réactivité des stériles submergés, chaque type de stérile est étudié en immersion simple ainsi que combinée à des sédiments prélevés au lac Allard, à proximité de la mine, d?où l?eau utilisée dans les essais a aussi été prélevée. L?évolution des teneurs en Ca, Mg, Si et Ni durant les 8 premiers mois d?étude démontrent que les stériles immergés sont réactifs, mais l?impact de la matière organique demeure pour l?instant difficile à préciser. Tank tests on Tio mine waste rock The Tio mine (QIT Iron and Titanium Inc.) exploits a massive ilmenite ore as an open pit since 1950, producing over 70Mt of potentially contaminated neutral drainage (CND)-generating waste rocks. While the underwater disposal of mine wastes generally show a beneficial effect on water contamination, this method still needs to be approved for CND-generating waste rocks. Tank tests were realized in order to evaluate the reactivity in underwater conditions of 3 different waste rock types, chosen with regards to their ilmenite content. In order to evaluate the impact of organic matter on the reactivity of underwater waste rock, each waste rock type was studied in simple immersion and in combination with sediments sampled at Allard lake, located near the mine, where the water for the tests was also sampled. The evolution of Ca, Mg, Si and Ni during the 8 first months of testing show that the waste rocks are reactive underwater, but the impact of the organic matter is till hard to define.

"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. Le tri granulométrique du minerai offre une plus-value intéressante en termes de traitement du minerai à plus faible teneur extrait des mines ; il permet par ailleurs l’acheminement vers le concentrateur de minerai à plus haute teneur et la revalorisation des stériles dans le minerai. On met généralement l’accent sur la susceptibilité du minerai au triage et sur les réductions connexes en termes d’utilisation de l’énergie, de l’eau et de biens consommables. Cependant, l’aménagement physique de l’équipement a une incidence non négligeable sur le coût installé d’une usine de concentration, et les répercussions sur l’aménagement de l’installation d’un circuit de triage du minerai dans l’usine doivent être soigneusement examinées. En 1995, la Compagnie minière Québec Cartier a mis de l'avant un projet de recherche sur la modélisation de l'écoulement des gaz pour ses fours de frittage à l'usine de bouletage de Port-Cartier. Cette démarche s'inscrivait dans un large processus de collaboration avec l'Université Laval et le Consortium de Recherche Minérale (COREM). L'usine de bouletage possède deux fours de frittage d'une capacité moyenne de 600 tonnes/heure pour chacun des fours. Les fours de frittage sont des systèmes complexes d'échange de chaleur qui fonctionnent à contre-courant (le débit de boulettes versus les débits de gaz). Pour rencontrer les spécifications reliées aux propriétés mécaniques des boulettes, le processus de fabrication requiert des mesures et un contrôle des systèmes très précis. L'information fournie par plus de 70 capteurs (pression, température, puissance, vitesse, hauteur de lit, position de volet....) est utilisée pour manipuler une vitesse de grille, cinq ventilateurs et neuf zones de brûleurs. Malheureusement, les variables qui influencent fortement les mécanismes de frittage, c'est-à-dire les débits de gaz dans les différentes zones du four ainsi que la masse de boulettes qui circulent ne sont pas mesurées. Une méthode est donc proposée pour une estimation en ligne de ces variables. La méthode est basée sur un arrangement de 65 équations reliant pressions, températures et débits de gaz dans les conduites, les ventilateurs, les sections du lit et les fuites (Gosselin, 1998). Pour des raisons de simplification de cet article, seul un sous-système du four sera présenté. Les techniques de réconciliation des données reliées à la conservation de la matière et de l'énergie montrent que la mesure en ligne du débit de boulettes mène à l'estimation des débits de gaz et apporte des avantages intéressants pour le contrôle des variables stratégiques des fours.

The microstructure and texture evolution of low temperature rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy during annealing were investigated. The specimens were rolled at the temperature of 100? at a high rolling speed of 1000m/min with a reduction of 30% in one pass. Annealing was conducted at various temperatures ranging from 200? to 500? for different time. To study the effect of fast speed rolling, the same annealing procedures have been applied for the specimens rolled at a significantly lower speed of 15m/min. The microstructure was characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, while the texture was analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis and electron backscattered diffraction analysis. Texture weakening occurred during annealing at both fast and slow rolling speeds. However, at the same annealing condition, fast rolled specimens always had weaker intensity of basal texture than slow rolled ones.

"Exploration activity for rare earth element (REE) deposits (i.e., alkaline complexes, carbonatites) has increased significantly in the last decade. A number of deposits have been evaluated around the globe. However, new mines have not been commenced in the last few years with the exception of Mount Weld (Lynas) and Mountain Pass (Molycorp).Resource estimation of REE can follow similar guidelines to other metal projects. However, the inherent mineralogical characteristics of the REE deposits, despite their complex nature, have been generally overlooked by many exploration companies. These include variability of the ore, liberation and association of the REE minerals, and grain size, all of which can affect the processing of the ore. Each deposit appears to be different in terms of matrix and REM (rare earth minerals). Light REE bearing minerals such as allanite, monazite, bastnaesite, synchysite, and HREE bearing minerals such as fergusonite and xenotime can vary widely in composition, grain size and association (e.g., carbonates or hard silicates). On the other hand, although not really REM, zircon, Zr-silicates, titanite, fluorite, apatite, and in some cases many other common silicate minerals can carry trace to significant concentrations of REE.The evaluation of REE deposits should include an appropriate mineralogical characterization in order to quantify the REM, distribution, liberation and association by quantitative mineralogical techniques (i.e., QEMSCAN, MLA, TIMA and others); chemistry of the REM by electron probe micro analysis (EPMA), Laser Ablation ICP-MS or ToF SIMS.These techniques provide valuable data for geological purposes such as: defining quantitatively, the variability and distribution of the REM; differentiating between LREE and HREE zones to delineate ore; and metallurgical purposes to predict minerals/REE behaviour during processing. The lack of a comprehensive mineralogical characterization often leads to the wrong processing path and ultimately affects the elemental/mineral recovery."

La découverte du gisement du puits Penna a nécessité une révision complète de tous les circuits du concentrateur Laronde pour permettre, premièrement, l?adaptation du procédé à la nouvelle minéralogie et deuxièmement, l'accroissement du tonnage de 1800* à 4500 t/j. Aux circuits existants de broyage, de flottation du cuivre, de cyanuration et du charbon en pulpe, les circuits suivants furent greffés : broyage semi-autogène, flottation du zinc, manutention des concentrés (épaississage, filtration, entreposage et chargement automatisé), décantation à contrecourant et précipitation au zinc, destruction des cyanures et remblai en pâte. Cet article se veut une revue des différentes étapes du projet d'agrandissement du concentrateur qui se sont effectuées par phases progressives de 1997 à 2000. De plus, une description des nouvelles technologies sélectionnées et implantées est présentée.
